Cadillac perfects the murdermobile
I am not a car person. Until we moved back to LA in 2015, the only time I'd ever been a car owner was 12 months in 2006-7, when I moved to LA for a Fulbright chair at USC and bought a used Hyundai Elantra to get to the university in.
When we moved back here in '15, we bought a used Prius. Both cars were fine - they got us around, took us to the beach, and were good for grocery runs.
But two years ago, I did a consulting gig that came with a one-year lease on a luxury SUV. I admit, I was curious about what life would be like behind the wheel of a land-yacht.
It was terrible.
The car handled like a tank, had multiple, massive bind-spots, and while it boasted a massive touchscreen with seven millions features, they were impossible to access, switched themselves off and on at random, and were a huge distracted-driving risk.
It looks like my lux SUV experience was par for the course. Andrew J Hawkins reviewed the new Cadillac Escalade for The Verge and the thing sounds like a lumbering murdermobile.
https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/19/21522959/cadillac-escalade-2021-first-drive-safety-oversized
It's the largest SUV Cadillac ever made, 18' long, 6.5' high, with a grille "like a sheer cliffside, obstructing my view several feet out in front of the wheels."
Last year's (smaller) Escalade has a blindspot so huge that "It took 13 children seated in a line in front of the Escalade before the driver could see the tops of their heads."
Here's Hawkins's 3-y-o standing in front of the new Escalade's grille:
https://twitter.com/andyjayhawk/status/1316038292769566723
The Escalade is a true road-hazard: at 6.75' wide, it barely fits in a highway lane (or a driveway).
As bad as it is to be in a car that gets hit by one of these things, pedestrians fare even worse: peds murdered by SUVs have soared 81% in ten years.
Not surprising: these things are so tall that they strike the head or torso, and they have so much clearance that they trap their victims beneath them.
The Escalade tries to make up for this with a cluster of cameras and haptic feedback mechanisms (my SUV had this too).
I found those mechanisms helpful, but agree with Hawkins: "When you need a suite of high-definition cameras and other expensive sensors to safely drive to the grocery store, there might be something inherently wrong with your design."
GM (who make the Cadillac) is phasing out ALL car models EXCEPT SUVs for the US market.
SUVs are the second largest cause of the global rise in carbon dioxide emissions over the past decade.
We barely drove our free SUV - a couple trips to the beach, some grocery runs. When the lease expired last month, we bought an all-electric Kia that we run off our rooftop solar.
The Kia is frankly great. It has fantastic handling, and dashboard controls based on buttons and knobs that you can find without taking your eyes off the road. We still barely drive it, but when we do, it's 1,000 times nicer than the SUV.
My only complaint is that Kia's leasing department insisted on using my home address for correspondence (I only give out a nearby mailbox as a precaution against doxing, SWATing, etc), and now I'm getting TONS of junk mail from people they've sold or given my name to.

Jeep Drops MORE Teaser Images for New Grand Wagoneer!
Jeep has been hard at work on something Grand. A recent, teasing social post from the brand made that clear, with a photo of the Grand Canyon overlaid with a definition of the word “grand” (“magnificent and striking in appearance, size, or style”) and the copy “coming soon.” Since that initial shot across our bow, we now know which vehicle is on its way and that “soon” means September 3. On that date, we’ll finally see the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV fully revealed. (The initial teaser could also have been referring to a new Grand Cherokee, a vehicle slated to get a redesign very soon.) It’s shaping up to be something special if the subsequent images are anything to go by, and you can head here for everything we know so far about the new 2022 Grand Wagoneer.
The latest images show off the SUV’s massive glass roof and two-tone paint job, as well as its profile (shown etched on the side of the vehicle’s dashboard.) Notably, the big SUV looks to share very few design cues with the Grand Wagoneer of yore. These images reveal the SUV boasts a very upright roofline and thick B- and C-pillars, both of which are in juxtaposition to the original model’s sloping rear end and thin, chrome-covered pillars.
Previously, Jeep’s shown off the “WAG—” portion of a hood badge perched above what appears to be a luxed-up, seven-rectangle spin on the so-called “muscle grille” sported by some full-size Jeep SUVs and trucks from 1981 through ’85. Another photo depicted a liftgate or body-side badge that reads “–ONEER” that also incorporates an American flag. A video Jeep tweeted earlier showed off the front end’s profile, too.
The return of a vehicle that defined a generation of adventure. Coming 2021. pic.twitter.com/9dEOBlC5YN
— Jeep (@Jeep) August 24, 2020
Other prior teaser images included one of an engine start-stop button housed in a binnacle on the dashboard. A slightly better look at the console in another shot revealed a knurled silver knob that might be used to control the infotainment, select gears, or choose a terrain mode from the expected on- and off-road chassis programs.
We’ll find out all there is to know about this highly anticipated new Jeep on September 3, including how closely it hews to the original Grand Wagoneer‘s boxy, rugged style and whether fans of the old truck view the reborn SUV as a poser or worthy successor. However that shakes out, there’s no doubt the new Grand Wagoneer SUV is a big—or even Grand—deal for the brand, giving it a competitor to big-buck SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
Update: This post has been updated with new teaser images and video for the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

title: delicate
about: A skill learned by @breebytes during their first conversation, Sébastien post anonymously through VPN to a school form in the spirit of this week’s carnival.
when: 09 April 2020
tagging: n/a
warnings: age gap relationship, sugar baby, sex worker
A man wears his income on his wrist. I noticed him when he walked into my work. He wore what seemed simple; A button down shirt, clean pressed trousers, and the Rolex Yacht Master II. It made him look so young and fresh. Looking at him, he was obviously successful. A lot of people like that walked in to grab a bite to eat.
It was just past midnight. Nobody was around, hell I was wondering what he was doing there so late. So I stayed and spoke to him. Almost instantly, we had a go at it. Together we discovered topics from the old Epic poem of Beowulf to the beautiful modern architecture. He didn’t just speak to deep thought and hobbies, he was speaking my language. Not physically a different language, but something that matched me for once. For the first time in a long time, I felt comfortable. I thanked him when he left and when I discovered the heavy bill he left behind.
I didn’t think I’d get another opportunity to see him again or have the same conversation. I was proven wrong on my next shift. And he continued to come back every night for the next week. Finally, he asked me to come out with him. It wasn’t the tips that enticed me, but more curiosity if anything. Why would somebody older than my mother want to take me out?
Comparing myself to others, I’d like to think of myself as intuitive. However, the watch thing? I was just discovering that little fact. As I followed the trail of breadcrumbs to his car, you can imagine my surprise to the slick black exterior of the brand new Cadillac Escalade (and he wasn’t even showing off). I felt like a fool. I sat at the edge of the seat. I remember his dark hand placing itself on my knee and pulling back so that I was flush against the comfortable plush leather.
An hour later, we rolled into the finest district in this classless boring town. It was a different world. Just by walking in the door, I was blown away by the culture and exuberance. The tables were all dressed with silk cloth while the chairs all looked handcrafted from a world renowned captendar. I felt like my five year old jeans and my old hand me down leather jacket was going to get me kicked out. The further and further we traveled into this place, I noticed booths along the wall, sectioned off by luscious red currants with low candle lighting. My heart almost burst out of my body when we finally came to one of them. I cringe at myself, imaging what kind of dumb I looked like just staring as he took his seat. From the outside looking in, you could feel the awkward when the host held out her hand to direct me into the other side of the booth.
At sixteen, I physically outgrew my little twin bed (to my horror, I kept growing all the way to 18). But sitting in that booth, I felt like some little child. Then I made the confession. I couldn’t afford that place. I didn’t even look at the menu. I just wanted to leave. I thought he wanted to go to some disgusting dive bar downtown and I was there for the ride.
To further my embarrassment, he says: I wouldn’t expect somebody who works in that place to be able too.
I remember the feeling of my jaw clenching as he chuckled. I looked down at the menu. My eyes were drawn to the prices. Earlier that week was the first time I had even held more than 500 dollars in my hand. I would’ve spent half of that on one glass of wine here. He makes a suggestion to something on the menu. I flip to it. Everything I read was something out of some prince fantasy I dreamed up whenever I was a teenager, wishing for my own room and a wardrobe that didn’t look like it belonged to my grandfather.
Aside from my nervous ticks, the dinner was amazing. It was unlike anything I’ve ever had in my life. We had the most delectable wine, the kind that I wish I had the riches to own a cellar full of. The food was nothing like I’ve ever tasted. My mother is a fantastic cook, but damn, I could eat that all the time. When he offered to take me out again and I didn’t refuse. Afterward, he turned out his jacket and pulled out two pieces of paper. Tickets to Manhattan, New York. Somewhere I’ve always dreamed of going. When he mentioned his business, I told him I’d always wanted to see it.
This was the beginning; this was seven months ago. I don’t love him. Maybe I’m his friend. Nobody is stupid enough to say that if there wasn’t money, I wouldn’t come back. He knows too. And we’ve worked it out. Anything I needed and wanted would be mine and all I had to do was bat my eyelashes and ask. I call it a mutual benefit.
Call me what you want- Sugar baby, gold digger, sex worker. I’ve read enough forms online to know what people might think about me. I know that even the premise of this is illegal in several countries, even with the absence of sex. I’ve never had much in my life and now I have everything. I can’t imagine my life without it now.
Confession: Regardless of possible loss (respect or even potential lovers), I can’t get enough of it.

Updated(?) 2020 XT5 🤦🏼♂️ ______________________________________ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [7/29/19] Cadillac has unveiled their facelifted XT5 after already unveiling the model for the Chinese market. So what exactly is new? Well there are two new grill designs and very very slightly updated LED lights.. There are also different wheel designs from18-20in. Other than that everything is much the same. Cadillac is saying the interior is updated with new color schemes but otherwise is the same besides updated CUE software and a USB-C port. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏁 @Allcarnews Spec Sheet: Under the hood is a Turbo 2.0L four cylinder that makes 258 lb-ft of torque and 237HP. The 3.6L V6 also remains with 310HP and 271 lb-ft of torque going to the front wheels. A dual clutch AWD system is optional. 🏁 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Inside has the updated CUE touchscreen system that now can be used by the new dial in the center console and there is a new Bose audio system. Cadillac also has said there are 14 new safety systems as well but other than that, you aren’t getting much more. The XT5 is in for a total redesign in a few years so this refresh should hold off its few buyers. Pricing also is very different with the FWD Luxury model starting at a staggering $47,190 and if you want AWD… well that is a $5,305 option. The new Sport trim, which gets clear taillights, carbon interior trim and a “sportier” suspension costs a hefty $56,090 and you can go even further with a Platinum option. ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: XT5 vs Nautilus… the final two FWD midsized luxury crossovers. Your Next Car Could Have a Bendable Screen Like This One
Automotive Tier-I supplier giant Visteon’s big show-stopper at the 2020 CES was an instrument panel display screen that can bend around the driver, cockpit-style, in sport mode, then flatten out for more relaxed drives when you might want to share the screen content with your co-pilot.
The two technology drivers that allow this concept to work are a patented hinge design that allows the assembly to rotate along a prescribed path without straining the lens material, and the lens material itself, which is very thin, very strong glass (think Gorilla Glass or similar). The glass is sufficiently scratch-resistant, thin enough to bend without fracturing, and reportedly possesses the impact strength to meet head-impact crash-safety requirements.
This flexible rotating screen design supports multiple automotive display technologies, including a fresh one making its debut at CES 2020. Coming fairly hot on the heels of news that the 2021 Cadillac Escalade will feature a 38-inch curved OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen, Visteon is introducing a technology promising similar performance at far lower cost. OLEDs are known for their deep, rich blacks; high contrast ratios; and amazing definition (Cadillac claims to match the 8K resolution of today’s most-cutting-edge TVs). But Visteon notes that OLED displays present challenges in the hostile automotive environment, where they’re far more likely to be subjected to vastly larger temperature swings, vibration, and sometimes persistent display images that can “burn-in” to the screen. Resolving these issues makes the displays very expensive.
Visteon’s answer is to use a modified dual-cell liquid-crystal display (LCD) setup. LCD has a great track record in automotive use, but because it must be backlit, the blacks it can display tend not to be as black as an OLED screen can manage. Visteon’s solution is to introduce what it calls “localized backlight luminance control.” How localized? 300 microns, or about twice the width of a human hair.
An array of tiny uZone shutters ensures that the black areas stay black, while colors can pop with the brightness customers expect from their home TV screens. The rated contrast ratio is an impressive 84,000:1, the resolution of the screens on the demo dash were 2400×900 for the driver info display and 1888×1728 for the center screen, and Visteon claims that the overall optical quality of these screens vastly exceeds what is capable by other LCD screens at a price “far below what can be realized by OLED.” We’re also assured that the microshutter tech is mature and hardened for automotive duty.
Of course, operating those shutters presents an additional video-processing software challenge. A chip on each display splits the incoming video stream in two and applies a carefully constructed Image Signal Processing algorithm to the path that drives the uZone shutters. Having the processor mounted directly to the display prevents latency so that even live camera feeds look sharp and clear.
Visteon believes the auto industry will need to continuously invest in new technologies like this in order for its displays to meet the expectations set by the new televisions and smartphones their customers are continually exposed to.

Elon Musk Claims “The Truck You Want In The Armageddon Is The Cybertruck”
August fourth, 2020 by Steve Hanley
In an interview with Automotive News, Elon Musk had a lot to say about the upcoming Cybertruck Here are a few bits from his discussion.
First, the Cybertruck will come with an onboard generator and air compressor as standard devices. And obviously the body is reported to be bulletproof, whatever that implies, with shatterproof windows.
Then there is the styling. It looks like no other vehicle in the history of the world with the possible exception of a snowmobile trailer. As reported by Cars And Truck Advice, Musk stated in the interview, “We’re actually, fundamentally making this truck as a North American ass-kicker, basically.
Plainly, Elon is tired of the generic American pickemups that were developed by the marketing departments of the Detroit Big Three as a method to navigate safety and emissions standards. Those companies marketed the bejezus out of them due to the fact that they are highly rewarding. However here’s the thing: trucks have now end up being a status symbol.
Given, a great deal of people use them as monsters of concern for industrial factors, however an even larger number of people use them to commute backward and forward to work or drop the kids off at soccer practice. As the pickup truck has transitioned from workhorse to daily chauffeur, owners have actually demanded they become more elegant and less “truckish.” They want more convenience, a smoother flight, and less noise, vibration, and cruelty.
Previously this year, BMW sent a Cadillac Escalade to choose me up and whisk me to the unveiling of the new electric MINI SE in Miami. To my surprise, I found I enjoyed the back seat of my neighbor’s Ford F-150 to the back seat of the Caddy.
Other companies perform enormous market research attempting to glean the requirements and desires of the purchasing public. We simply made a vehicle we believed was awesome and looks incredibly odd,” Musk told Automotive News
” I wasn’t extremely worried about (the style) since if it turns out no one wants to buy a weird looking truck, we’ll build a regular truck, no problem. There’s lots of normal trucks out there that look pretty much the same.
Tesla says it has hundreds of thousands of bookings for the Cybertruck, however whether a “super unusual” car that doesn’t ride as well as an Escalade will appeal to American pickup truck purchasers remains to be seen.
In the same interview, Elon took a minute to say a couple of words about China and the United States. “China rocks, in my viewpoint. The energy in China is great. There resembles a lot of smart, effort people. And they’re really– they’re not entitled, they’re not contented. I see in the United States increasingly a lot more complacency and privilege, especially in locations like the Bay Location, and L.A. and New York.”
That belief is fascinating, since California has contributed a minimum of $4.9 billion in advantages to Tesla according to the Los Angeles Times New York State has likewise begun nearly one billion dollars for the Tesla Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo. A tip to the exalted Musk might be, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” Though, he might not care at this point.
Musk included, “When you have actually been winning for too long, you sort of take things for granted. The United States, and specifically like California and New York City, you’ve been winning for too long. Just like some pro sports group, they win a champion a lot of times in a row, they get contented and they start losing.”
Musk is very much in the “run around and break things” mode that is the hallmark of Silicon Valley. There seems to be a darker side to Musk’s vision.
