Happy 14th anniversary to the most versatile and talented K-pop girl dance group there ever was!

After School first debuted as a five-piece on this day with AH, and, through the years, went on to give us some of the most elaborate dance performances from playing drums, to tap dancing to pole dancing.

Their debut stage will forever be iconic. Kahi's abs are a separate member of the group. The Pussycat Dolls influence was quite evident at that point in their career.

They added the drums as part of the stage intro for Bang!, it was Kahi's idea as she always wanted to to a marching band concept. This particular performance is a special stage in 2013, after Kahi had left the group and Kaeun had joined, but Uee was filming so it's just the eight of them.

Let's Step Up was Shampoo's stage intro and this time they did a tap dancing routine! Bekah could unfortunately not participate as she had hurt her ankle during Bang! promotions (andtheresarumourthatPledisstraightupwouldntpayforherexpensivesurgery) so she could only do the much less demanding choreo for Shampoo.

And then there's of course First Love. Pole Dancing was this time a part of the choreography for the actual song and not a stage intro, meaning they would do this every. time! Lizzy unfortunately broke her leg while shooting the MV so she did not participate in the promotions.

These women literally put their bodies and souls into their work and I feel like their efforts sometimes are not appreciated as much as they should by the public or are overshadowed by Orange Caramel. But After School gave us great music, great looks and great performances. Honestly what else can one expect?

Guys. Guys. I’m back from the dead just to scream about a second season of PickaTDL!!! I’m still not through with it yet but this is a WHOLE lot harder than the first season. The characters are a lot harder to figure out??? And there’s a lot more random opportunity mixed in too, so you won’t always be able to control your fate. But. I will be back with my findings.

anyway, i wanted to go back to the scene where taewon chokes yoojin because, in the manhwa, soyoung steps in and throws down to protect yoojin.

and this is a pattern with taewon specifically, but it feels like all of his scenes have slight changes that kind of mess up his character. when he strangles yoojin, he's checking yoojin's reaction. its pretty obvious in the novel that that's what he's doing (although i thought he was checking his pulse, honestly) but because the scene is quite short in the manhwa, it's kind of a question of what all this is then.

but most importantly, he steps back on his own in the novel, whereas in the manhwa soyoung steps in. its kind of a small, seemingly unimportant thing, and i can understand why they'd change it to add an extra action scene since its an action manhwa. but still.

then, during the fog arc, yoojin is driving a stolen vehicle and taewon rips him out of it. in the novel i believe he explains it as driving vehicles in the fog and/or in a dungeon break area is unsafe (with an implication of the noise being an issue, if there are monsters running around?) but in the manhwa he stops yoojin from falling into a hole. the first one is more about following usual dungeon break procedure whereas the second one is like "wow, he just saved yoojin's life! (comedic)"

idk its such small things a barely even worth mentioning but im complaining anyway. youre taking my guy from me. this weirdo guy who strangles you to protect you but also will get you into a car crash because youre not following the rules.😔

For the uniniciated, keeping up with the MANY different lineups of After School can be daunting. Given the renewed interest in the group I thought I might make this process easier.

I’ll be using the “schoolgirl” themed photoshoots because it’s the only one to incorporate all eleven members and I think it’s cool that they retained this system of introducing members for three years! I won’t be including OSTs, collaborations and CF songs.

The only sexy / cute contrast I can see is on the covers of the singles. The songs and MV both feel like a mix of cute music with sexy-ish outfits, but nowhere near After School’s “trademark sexy.”]

Bekah was still in the group when they performed it for the first time, but due to an ankle injury she sustained during Bang! she couldn’t perform the demanding routine so she only performed Shampoo instead which wasn’t as hard on her ankle. She is the only one to have lines on Step Up however along with Kahi.]

[Note: This lineup was also featured on Japanese siger Namie Amuro’s song make it happen. This was E-Young’s first release with the group, before VIRGIN, making her the first member to (unofficially) debut in Japan before Korea. Bekah is, again, absent from this project (third one so far), possibly because she was still in Hawaii. Bekah is the only member in the history of the group to be excluded from projects despite being in the group. U-ie would also frequently skip performances due to her tight-packed filming schedule but she still recorded songs and was present for promotional material. Lizzy also broke her leg during First Love but she’s still featured on the non-dancing scenes of the MV. This is a rumour that’s been going around the fandom for years but many believe that Avex, the company managing After School’s Japanese activities, didn’t like how dark Bekah’s skin tone was or the fact that she wasn’t as skinny as the others and actively excluded her from Japanese activities. Pledis themselves are thought to have used her ankle injury as an excuse to force her out of the group for the same reasons. It is also worth noting that during their Japanese promotions U-ie’s skin tone started appearing on official photos and videos considerably lighter than before and they all started looking a lot skinnier than before, U-ie and Raina in particular. Again, no official accusations have been made by anyone involved but I still think it’s something worth considering.]

[Note: This is the lineup that performed the most-well known of their three trademark dance routines, and perhaps the most demanding; Pole dancing, for First Love’s MV and stage performances as well as Heaven’s MV intro.]

So there you have it! All of After School’s main lineups! There are of course some notable unofficial lineups like the 2021 reunion lineup (Identical to their debut but with Raina instead of Soyoung) or when Gen. 5 sans U-ie reunited with Kahi to perforim Bang! in 2013 but they were, unfortunately, one-time units. Almost all b-sides feature certain lineup changes too. For example in VIRGIN, every single song is sang by a different number of the nine members present at the time. Only Shampoo and VIRGIN feature all nine of them.

Anyway, bottom line is stream After School because with every single generation you get a different flavour, with each member bringing a different type of charm and vocals to the mix! This is extremely apparent in different versions of the same song. Korean Diva gives a whole other vibe from 2011 Kor. / Jap. Diva or 2015 Jap. Diva.
