I knew going to a science conference as a free agent / not connected to a lab or university would be a weird thing. I knew it would be expensive because they don't expect people to actually just go to the convention on their own; they expect you to have a big school pay for you. I was in academia and I didn't like it - I didn't like my entire life coming down to picking a good advisor who doesn't secretly hate women or whatever, and then picking a research topic related to theirs or related to some specific source of funding from a corporate interest. No one funds my thing (non-food shrimp) and there are very few labs, none in my part of the country, so I would have had to move to California at minimum and leave the Florida shrimp unprotected.
I went anyway, and paid out of pocket, because if I don't yell about the fairy shrimp no one will, and there will never be a lab, and there will never be funding to send people to conferences. I don't know if it will amount to anything, but maybe I can get someone WITH funding to care about my thing a little. Maybe they won't neglect and throw out the specimens like my last job did, or maybe they will recognize a shrimp when they see one in the field. I think it's worth a shot.
