Weak Hero Character Names
For those who don't know, the Weak Hero webtoon anglicized a bunch of the characters' first names from Korean to English. They don't do this for newly introduced characters anymore AFAIK, but all the names they anglicized initially have been kept that way.
Since I've gotten a few people asking about the names, so I decided to compile a list of their original Korean names. You can find amost of these on their character profiles on the Weak Hero fandom page, but I figured people would appreciate having a quick reference that is all in one place. Hopefully this helps people learn/connect their original names.
Remember, this is not a full character list, it's for finding the Korean names of the characters that had their names anglicized.
The format will be:

Lucky Spring (IU)
Dewasa sejak muda, manusia bertubuh mungil yang memiliki pemikiran yang luas. Duta Gucci, IU, yang aman dalam dunianya sendiri, mulai sekarang bermimpi untuk memperluas dunianya dan membuatnya berbeda. Beruntung dapat melihat saat-saat dimana dia memperluas kapasitas dirinya.
Q1. Kita dapat melihat berbagai macam sisi IU tahun lalu. Mulai dari perilisan Seri Netflix Original <Persona> pada paruh pertama tahun hingga <Hotel Del Luna> pada paruh kedua tahun, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan album <Love poem>, kamu memiliki jadwal yang sangat sibuk. Bagaimana kamu menghabiskan waktumu hari-hari ini? IU: Saat ini aku sedang beristirahat dengan perasaan bahagia dan puas setelah menjalani jadwal yang sangat sibuk tanpa istirahat.
Q2. Belum lama ini dikabarkan bahwa kamu akan bermain bersama dengan aktor Park Seo Joon dalam <Dream>, film terbaru sutradara Lee Byung Hun [bercerita tentang tim sepak bola nasional dadakan yang mencoba mengikuti Homeless World Cup, pertandingan sepak bola tunawisma internasional tahunan] dan kamu adalah seorang produser yang akan membuat film dokumenter tentang mereka. Selain itu, tidak banyak detail tentang film tersebut yang diungkapkan. IU: Aku mengkhawatirkan banyak hal, mungkin karena ini adalah debut pertamaku dalam film komersial. Untungnya selama ini aku menerima banyak naskah dan tawaran yang bagus, entah itu Jian-ie dalam <My Mister> maupun Manwol dalam <Hotel Del Luna>, karakter-karakter yang kuperankan sebagian besar unik dan berkesan. Bagiku, Somin dalam <Dream> lebih menonjol dibanding yang lain karena karakternya sangat manusiawi, tidak memiliki senjata khusus. Somin adalah tipe orang yang kuinginkan ada — setidaknya satu — disekitarku. Aku selalu ingin mencoba memerankan karakter seperti ini.
Q3. Jika kita ingin membuat asumsi tentang sutradara Lee Byung Hun hanya berdasarkan film-film yang dia buat, sepertinya dia adalah orang yang memiliki kecerdasan dan kefasihan yang luar biasa. Percapakan macam apa yang kalian buat saat kalian berdua bertemu? IU: Sutradara Lee adalah tipe orang yang sangat pemalu jika berada disekitar orang-orang yang belum dia kenal, sama sepertiku. Saat pertemuan pertama, kami membuka diri satu sama lain tentang hal ini dan berbincang-bincang tentang hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan film secara singkat sebelum akhirnya berpisah. Tidak ada pertemuan yang lebih baik dari ini bagi seseorang sepertiku, yang justru akan semakin canggung dan tidak alami ketika mencoba mengakrabkan diri dengan orang lain dalam waktu yang singkat (tertawa). Bukan hanya sutradara saja, staf-staf lainnya juga semuanya sangat pemalu. Tapi yang sangat imut adalah ketika pertama kalinya aku menghadiri pertemuan, mereka menggantung fotoku yang berukuran sangat besar dan menghiasnya dengan balon-balon berwarna ungu di kantor. Jadi sulit untuk dipercaya bahwa orang-orang yang membuat event yang imut tersebut ternyata sangat pemalu jika berada disekitar orang-orang yang belum mereka kenal…. Mereka benar-benar tipeku (tertawa).
Q4. Bagaimana perasaanmu menonton IU di layar lebar? Cukup mengesankan bahwa sutradara Lee Kyung Mi, Im Pil Sung, Jeon Go Woon, dan Kim Jong Kwan membuat yang terbaik dari ‘IU’ melalui gaya dan kisah mereka masing-masing dalam <Persona>, Seri Netflix yang dapat ditonton melalui komputer/ laptop. IU: Aku ingin bekerja dengan keempat sutradara ini lagi suatu hari nanti. Aku sangat gembira dapat digunakan sebagai materi utama mereka. Seri ini akan dikenang sebagai karya spesialku untuk waktu yang lama.
Q5. Merasakan sudut pandang dan wawasan berbagai macam sutradara dalam waktu yang sama sungguh merupakan hal yang spesial bagi seorang aktor/ aktris. Pasti ada empat interpretasi dan metode penggunaan ‘IU’, sisi yang seperti apakah yang mereka lihat atau keluarkan dari dirimu? IU: Bagiku hal yang paling menarik adalah keempat sutradara melihatku dengan memproyeksikan diri mereka hingga batas tertentu. <Persona> adalah kumpulan empat film pendek di mana seorang aktris digambarkan menggunakan empat sudut pandang yang berbeda. Berdasarkan struktur, seri tersebut dapat dilihat sebagai proyek yang terpusat pada aktris, tapi aku merasa ini adalah sebuah karya yang lebih dapat menampilkan kepribadian dan warna masing-masing sutradara. Proses memahami apa yang ingin diproyeksikan oleh sutradara melalui diriku adalah proses yang sangat menarik dan mengasyikkan. Kurasa kami memiliki suatu kesamaan, dan hanya mungkin terjadi karena kami dapat memahami satu sama lain.
Q6. Jadi, apakah ‘IU’ mengamati para sutradara yang juga sedang mengamati ‘IU’? Ketika kamu pertama kali menonton versi lengkap <Persona>, apakah ada sisi dari dirimu yang tidak kamu kenal? IU: Aku sungguh merasa asing dengan diriku saat adegan dimana karakter Jieun-ie membuang raketnya dan berteriak “Fxxk You!” setelah terus menerus kalah dalam pertandingan, dan ketika duduk di lapangan dengan lututnya yang terluka kemudian menangis, meminta agar Doona tidak menikahi ayahnya dalam <Love Set> yang disutradarai oleh Lee Kyung Mi. Mungkin karena lelah akibat berlari-lari di lapangan tenis seharian saat musim panas, aku jadi agak kesulitan dalam mengatur ekspresi tubuh dan wajah. Namun aku sama sekali tidak membencinya. Juga ketika menonton adegan dimana aku memberitahu temanku, Hye Bok, bahwa dia imut dalam <Kiss Burn> yang disutradarai oleh Jeon Go Woon, aku berpikir, “Oh, sekarang aku cukup bisa diandalkan, ya?”
Q7. Diantara keempat episode yang dirilis berurutan, aku paling tertarik dengan <Love Set> di mana kamu bertanding tenis melawan Bae Doona. Aku suka bagaimana [film tersebut] diawali dengan seorang wanita dan seorang anak perempuan yang berhadapan satu sama lain untuk memperebutkan seorang laki-laki, berakhir hanya dengan ketegangan yang luar biasa diantara keduanya. Apakah ada sesuatu yang IU lihat dalam Bae Doona? IU: Aku menghargai proses alami dalam menjalin hubungan. Menjadi alami sebenarnya bukan hal yang mudah. Terutama jika aku bertemu dengan seseorang dalam pekerjaan, kita harus melewati hal-hal yang kurang penting dan langsung ke inti pokok permasalahan, jadi ada kalanya dimana [hubungan] terasa seperti bangunan yang lemah yang sedang berada dalam tahap awal pembangunan. Mengakrabkan diri dengan cepat dan mendekati seseorang dengan nyaman adalah kebajikan dan kemampuan yang diperlukan saat bekerja, namun aku sangat canggung dalam hal tersebut. Tetapi kadang-kadang juga ada orang yang berpikir ‘wajar bagi seseorang untuk menjadi tidak alami/ canggung pada saat-saat seperti ini’, kemudian terus berusaha untuk menerima kecanggungan orang lain. Bae Doona sunbaenim adalah tipe orang yang seperti itu.
Q8. Apakah kamu bersyukur dia [Bae Doona] tidak pernah mendesakmu dan kamu dapat menggunakan waktumu sebanyak mungkin? IU: Dia sangat keren sampai-sampai aku jatuh hati padanya. Meskipun ini hanyalah sebuah film pendek, dia adalah seorang rekan yang mana aku harus bertukar banyak emosi dan sejalan dengannya. Dia tidak pernah sekalipun mendesakku dan selalu menungguku. Dia bahkan tidak memperlihatkan kalau dia sedang menunggu, dia akan berlagak pura-pura tidak tahu dan melihat kejauhan dengan tenang saat menunggu jika aku memperhatikannya! Haha. Juga ada berbagai alasan lainnya, namun sejak pertama kali bertemu dengan seseorang, aku dapat mengetahui jika orang itu sangatlah keren.
Q9. Bagaimana sukacita dari menyelesaikan musik dan tampil berbeda dari sukacita dari berakting? IU: Aku merasa bahwa proses pengerjaan sebuah lagu mulai dari studio hingga ruang rekaman cukup mirip dengan proses pengambilan gambar yang berulang-ulang di lokasi syuting. Membuat keputusan berulang kali untuk memberi hasil yang terbaik dalam jangka waktu yang ditentukan agaknya memberikanku tekad yang kuat? Tentu saja ada saatnya dimana aku sering merasa terbeban dengan hal-hal yang menjadi kekuranganku, namun saat-saat seperti itu membuat jantungku berdetak paling cepat dan darah mengalir melalui pembutuh darahku. Sangat berbeda dengan konser. Tidak ada waktu untuk mengambil keputusan-keputusan. Aku hanya mengikuti arus [mengikuti penonton]. Tidak memungkinkan bagiku untuk dapat berdiskusi dengan para penonton tentang keinginan yang kumiliki akan jalannya konser hari itu. Para penonton mengambil inisiatif dalam hal ini. Bagiku, tidak ada yang dapat kulakukan selain menampilkan apa yang telah kupersiapkan tanpa membuat kesalahan. Karena itulah aku hanya mengikuti para penonton kemanapun mereka membawaku dengan perasaan yang bahagia.
Q10. Kamu telah memberikan sebuah analogi dan penjelasan tentang musik dan akting yang belum pernah kudengar sebelumnya. Aku ingin mengintip buku harian atau catatanmu yang berisi pemikiran-pemikiran seperti ini… IU: Aku belum menulis buku harianku selama 4 bulan terakhir. Sepertinya akhir-akhir ini aku merasa agak lesu dan bosan. Karena itulah aku mencoba hal-hal baru dan berhenti menulis buku harian yang biasanya kulakukan setiap hari sejak aku menjadi trainee ketika berusia 15 tahun. Seperti sebuah anomali bagiku. Melepaskan satu per satu peraturan yang kubuat dan kujaga layaknya sebuah kebiasaan. Meski demikian, duniaku tidak benar-benar runtuh [karena hal itu].
Q11. Apakah kamu mengetahui aturan dan metode yang tidak disadari oleh orang lain, yang hanya diketahui olehmu, dan hal tersebut tampaknya mempertahankan cara hidupmu, tidak akan menyebabkan ‘rumah’-mu hancur bahkan ketika kamu melepas salah satu pilarnya? IU: Ada beberapa hal yang kuupayakan dengan keras agar tidak terlupakan. Menulis di buku harian adalah salah satu hal yang kuupayakan. Sekarang aku ingin melupakan hal-hal yang pada akhirnya terlupakan. Kurasa akan baik-baik saja.
Q12. Entah itu dari catatan, buku harian ataupun ucapan, pasti ada kata-kata atau gambaran unik yang sering kamu gunakan. Aku merasa kata-kata yang cenderung kamu gunakan secara tidak sadar mencerminkan nilai-nilai yang penting bagimu. Apakah kamu memiliki kata-kata seperti itu? IU: Berdasarkan tingkat keseringan, kurasa aku paling sering menggunakan ‘아무래도 [bagaimanapun juga/ kelihatannya]’.. Apakah hal itu membuatku menjadi seseorang yang mengutamakan hasil? (tertawa) Aku juga sering menggunakan ‘흥미 [ketertarikan]’ dan ‘매력 [pesona/ daya tarik]’. Kalau dipikir-pikir, yang paling kutakutkan tidak lain dan tidak bukan adalah rasa bosan. Aku lebih memilih merasa lelah atau sedih. ‘책임감 [rasa tanggung jawab]’ adalah suatu kata yang juga sering kugunakan.
Q13. Apa yang kamu lakukan ketika kamu merasa tertekan? Aturan atau pola kecil IU untuk mengatasi perasaan tersebut IU: Aku mencuci piring untuk menghadapi apa yang menekanku. Jika mencuci piring hingga bersih cemerlang tiba-tiba saja menjadi hal yang paling penting maka hal yang awalnya membuatku tertekan menjadi sedikit tidak mengancam. Meskipun ini bukanlah sesuatu yang besar, setelah mencuci piring aku merasakan suatu pencapaian, dan perasaan tertekan yang kurasakan menjadi sedikit hilang.
Q14. Bagaimana ketika kamu merasa tertekan akibat menulis lirik atau mengerjakan sesuatu? Apakah akan terselesaikan dengan berhenti menulis lirik kemudian mencuci piring [dari pertanyaan no.13]? IU: Ada sebuah metode yang dikatakan oleh penulis Kim Eana kepadaku. Dia berkata bahwa jika lirik yang kutulis mulai terasa seperti bukan milikku atau jika mulai terasa sulit, carilah definisi kata tersebut di dalam kamus. Sebagai contoh, diantara sekian banyak arti kata ‘사랑 [cinta]’, ada definisi ‘생각의 옛말 [kata lampau dari ‘niat hati’, berarti niat hati tersebut sekarang tidak ada/ hilang]’ atau ‘애틋하게 그리워하다 [merindukan sesuatu/ seseorang dengan penuh gairah]’. Pemikiran ’apakah cinta pada dasarnya berasal dari ketiadaan?’ ini muncul dalam benakku. Tidak ada lawan kata dari ‘외로움 [kesepian]’ merupakan sesuatu yang kutemukan melalui pendekatan tersebut. Mungkin karena tidak ada hal yang dapat melawan/ mengalahkan kesepian. Aku dapat berkata bahwa mulai dari sekarang, salah satu tema [dalam karya IU] yang akan kupertahankan adalah “menemukan lawan dari kesepian”.
Q15. Memproduksi musik sendiri - seperti apakah proses tersebut dan apa artinya bagimu? IU: Memiliki arti ‘aku adalah pemilik IU’? Haha, tentu saja [memproduksi musik] adalah hal yang paling menyenangkan, paling susah, paling berbarti, dan paling ekonomis yang pernah kulakukan.
Q16. Apakah ada topik yang benar-benar menarik minatmu akhir-akhir ini? IU: ‘Big Size [berukuran besar]’. Sejak masih muda, bagiku musik yang mudah didengar; dan, entah itu buku ataupun film, aku selalu lebih suka yang kecil dan sepele dibandingkan dengan sesuatu dengan narasi yang besar. Namun akhir-akhir ini aku lebih tertarik dengan topik-topik yang lebih besar. Aku ingin membuat “musik yang besar”. Karena itulah aku memikirkan tentang gaya bernyanyi yang lebih dalam dan dengan suara yang lebih rendah. Walaupun beresiko, aku ingin membuat duniaku yang dulunya selalu aman dan kecil, menjadi sedikit lebih luas.
Q17. Ketika IU mendaur-ulang [remake] lagu-lagu Kim Changwan dan Jo Dukbae serta berduet dengan Choi Baekho, kamu mampu membuktikan kemampuanmu dalam menginterpretasikan/ menafsirkan lagu dengan sangat baik. Pernahkah kamu berpikir untuk mencoba suatu genre atau gaya yang tidak pernah terbayangkan untuk dilakukan olehmu? Seperti mencoba trot [genre musik khas Korea Selatan] atau apa. IU: Aku bukan tipe [penyanyi] yang hanya mengkhususkan diri kepada suatu genre musik. Bahkan dengan lagu-lagu terbaruku, masing-masing berbeda dengan caranya sendiri. Mulai sejak pertama kali aku menyukai musik saat masih muda hingga sekarang, aku tidak pernah benar-benar banyak memikirkan konsep genre musik. Trot keren. Baru-baru ini aku menonton <Mister Trot [acara TV]> dan setelah membaca lirik lagu-lagu trot yang kukenal, aku tersadar, ‘wow aku tidak tahu kalau liriknya sedalam ini’, ‘wow jadi trot merupakan musik yang dinyanyikan dengan cara dan ekspresi wajah yang seperti itu meskipun lirik lagunya berbobot’. Ketika kekuatan batinku menjadi lebih kuat, tanpa ditanya lagi, aku ingin mencoba trot. Hip Hop selalu menarik buatku karena luasnya topik yang dapat dibahas dan banyaknya jumlah kata yang dapat kamu gunakan dalam sebuah lagu.
Q18. Setelah terungkap bahwa IU akan menjadi model sampul majalah <W> untuk bulan ini, seorang produser TV yang terkenal berkata bahwa ada sesuatu yang harus kutanyakan kepadamu: Kapankah kamu sendiri mulai mendapatkan firasat bahwa kamu adalah orang yang luar biasa? Adalah suatu kebohongan jika kamu menjawabnya dengan ‘aku tidak merasa bahwa aku adalah orang yang luar biasa’, jadi mereka meminta agar aku menanyakanmu dengan lebih gigih. IU: Hahaha, jika aku harus menjawab dengan jujur dan blak-blakan, aku tidak yakin apakah ini pertama kalinya, tapi mungkin saat itu, ketika aku berusia 6 atau 7 tahun dan aku memenangkan hadiah besar dalam lomba pidato. Tidak seperti sekarang, ketika aku masih muda, setiap kali orang-orang menatapku ketika aku berada dihadapan mereka, aku menjadi bersemangat. Bahkan aku menyukai rasa gugup.
Q19. Apa yang terlintas dalam pikiranmu ketika kamu memikirkan ‘masa remaja dan orang tua’? IU: Berpikir tentang masa lalu, masa remajaku adalah warna abu-abu. Kurasa kata yang tepat untuk menggambarkannya adalah ‘고됐다 [keras, berat, sulit]’. Memikirkan orang tuaku membuatku tersenyum, mereka tampak seperti pasangan yang imut, yang bertolak belakang satu sama lain. Meskipun aku merasa haru ketika berpikir tentang Ibu, berpikir tentang Ayah membuatku tertawa. Jika Ayah dan aku sama-sama terjatuh dalam air maka Ayah akan mencoba untuk berenang terlebih dahulu. Aku bersyukur bahwa ketika aku memikirkan Ayah, bukannya terharu, aku malah tertawa. Jika kami berdua sama-sama jatuh dalam air, tidak apa-apa jika Ayah tidak menyelamatkanku, kuharap Ayah dapat terus menjalani kehidupan sesuai dengan caranya. Ayah seperti hadiah terbesar dalam hidupku.
Q20. Jika IU di masa sekarang diminta untuk memberi nasihat kepada IU remaja masa itu, apa yang akan kamu sampaikan? IU: Dia lebih unnie [dewasa] daripada aku jadi aku tidak berani memberikan nasihat kepadanya. Hanya berkat/ karena dialah aku dapat hidup dalam kehidupan indah yang kumiliki sekarang. Jika aku diminta untuk mengatakan sesuatu, aku hanya akan bertanya kepadanya tentang bagaimana aku harus menjalani hidup mulai dari sekarang.
Q21. Apakah Lee Jieun [nama asli IU] tahu bahwa IU akan bertumbuh menjadi artis yang luar biasa dan patut dipuji? Apakah IU ditakdirkan menjadi IU hari ini? IU: Kurasa pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang ditanyakan kepadaku hari ini lebih sulit dari yang pernah kuterima sebelumnya. Sulit tapi menarik, dan karena aku ingin menjawabnya dengan jujur, pertanyaan ini membuatku berpikir keras. Hmm… Aku juga tidak tahu kalau aku akan menjalankan [karier] ini selama ini. Kurasa masa sekarang ini jauh lebih menakjubkan dari apa yang pernah kuharapkan atau inginkan saat aku masih muda. Aku sadar bahwa membuat musik yang didengarkan oleh orang-orang adalah sesuatu yang jauh lebih susah dan lebih menakjubkan daripada yang kupikirkan. Haruskah aku [menjawabnya dengan] lebih jujur? Tentu saja bagi seseorang sepertiku untuk dapat menjadi seseorang seperti IU adalah pencapaian yang luar biasa dan membanggakan. Keadaan seperti ini adalah sesuatu yang sangat amat kubanggakan dan kusyukuri. Meski demikian, sejauh ini aku masih belum dapat merasa benar-benar puas dengan karyaku. Jika aku menjawab pertanyaan ‘apakah ini adalah takdir’ dengan sebuah kalimat, jawanbanku adalah ‘hanya setengahnya’, karena meskipun aku telah bertumbuh lebih dari apa yang telah ku impikan, kurasa aku belum menjadi seorang artis yang luar biasa dan patut dipuji. Tetapi kepribadian dan keberuntungan yang tidak dapat dijelaskan inilah yang membuatku dapat menjadi diriku yang sekarang; bukankah sulit bagi seseorang untuk mengatur kepribadian maupun keberuntungan alamiah nya sendiri? Jadi kurasa bisa disebut takdir, haha.
Q22. Orang yang seperti apakah yang membuatmu iri? IU: Aku iri kepada orang-orang yang jauh lebih rajin dan bekerja lebih keras daripada aku. Meskipun demikian, aku merasa tidak berdaya ketika bertemu dengan orang yang tidak mengeluh tentang hidupnya. Membuatku merasa rendah diri dan merasa bahwa aku belum melakukan pencapaian apapun. Dan juga orang-orang yang masuk dalam kategori jenius. Aku iri dengan orang-orang yang mampu menikmati pekerjaan yang nyaris tidak dapat kulakukan walaupun aku berusaha dengan keras. Itulah sebabnya aku iri dengan orang-orang yang hidup dalam kekhawatiran yang jauh berbeda denganku.
Q23. Apakah kekurangan yang dimiliki oleh IU? IU: Sejujurnya, aku seorang yang pemalas. Aku juga tidak memiliki tekad yang kuat [tidak tegas, mudah goyah]. Aku bukanlah tipe orang yang menikmati tantangan, aku tidak dapat menyesuaikan diri dengan baik atau menikmati sesuatu jika aku tidak dalam keadaan dimana aku merasa aman. Karena itulah aku kagum dan iri kepada orang-orang yang mampu menikmati tantangan.
Q24. Bagi IU yang pemalas dan tidak memiliki tekad yang kuat, keadaan seperti apakah yang dikatakan sebagai ‘bahagia nyaris sempurna’? IU: Saat memakan makanan yang lezat, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan memakan sebatang cokelat tebal sebagai pencuci mulut jika perut masih belum sepenuhnya kenyang.
Q25. Apa yang terlintas dalam pikiranmu ketika kamu bercermin? IU: Dulu aku dengan tegas menyangkalnya, namun akhir-akhir ini aku mulai mengakuinya. “Aku terlihat sama persis dengan adik laki-lakiku”.
Q26. Sebelumnya dalam lirik lagumu [lirik lagu Twenty Three], kamu berkata ‘aku ingin menjadi wanita yang 물기 [memiliki arti ‘lembab’, namun dalam kamus ada definisi lain yaitu 얼다 yang berarti ‘merasa gelisah atau bersemangat dibawah pengaruh suasana atau orang tertentu/ terkejut hingga tidak tenang’]. Semakin bertambahnya usia, aku sadar akan pentingnya menua dengan 물기. Menurut IU, apa yang membuat seseorang 물기 dan tidak 건조 [memiliki arti ‘kering,’, namun ada definisi lain yang berarti ‘membosankan’]? IU: Hal-hal yang membuat jantungmu berdebar dengan sangat kencang. Contohnya, cinta atau ambisi yang muncul dalam hidupmu dari waktu ke waktu? Hahaha! Seperti setrika uap yang panas dan memiliki fungsi pelembaban otomatis.
Q27. Apakah ada sesuatu yang, bahkan bagi seseorang yang sepertimu, pokok/ intisari-nya tidak pernah berubah terlepas dari semua perubahan besar dan kecil yang terjadi? IU: Dalam artian baik, rasa tanggung jawab. Rasa tanggung jawab memiliki peran kunci untuk menarik dan menyeret diriku yang pemalas hingga mencapai titik dimana aku ada saat ini.

Q1. We were able to see various sides of IU last year. Starting with the release of Netflix Original Series <Persona> in the first half of the year to tvN drama <Hotel Del Luna> in the second half of the year, and followed by the album <Love poem>, you had a pretty hectic schedule. How are you passing your time these days?
IU: I’m currently taking a break as I felt rewarded after dealing with a whirlwind of schedule without a break. I’ve been keeping my plans in check this year while making preparations for it calmly.
Q2. It was recently revealed that you will be starring alongside actor Park Seo Joon in <Dream>, the latest film by director Lee Byung Hun that tells about an impromptu national soccer team trying out for the Homeless World Cup and you’re a producer who will be making a documentary about them. Aside from that, not many details about the film were revealed.
IU: Maybe because this is my first debut on a commercial film, I had a lot of concerns. Thankfully, I’ve received lots of good scripts and offers along the way, whether it’s <My Mister>’s Jian-ie or <Hotel Del Luna>’s Man Wol, the roles ( I’ve portrayed) were mostly one of a kind and memorable. Among them, <Dream>’s Somin rather stands out to me as her character is very humanly without any special weapon. Somin is the kind of person I wish to have at least one around me. I’ve always wanted to try portraying this kind of character.
Q3. If we are to make assumptions about director Lee Byung Hun simply based on his movies, he seems to be a man of great wit and eloquence. What kind of conversation was exchanged when the two of you had a meeting?
IU: Well, director Lee is the type of person who is very shy around strangers just like me. We opened up about this to each other and talked about the things related to the movie briefly during our first meeting before parting ways. So there was no better meeting than this for someone like me who comes off as more unnatural and awkward the harder I try to get closer to someone hastily (laughs). Not just the director, but the other staff were all extremely shy as well. But what’s really cute was that when I first went to the meeting, they hung a huge picture of me and decorated it with purple balloons in the office. So it was hard to believe that the people who threw such an adorable event were beyond shy around strangers... they were totally my type (laughs).
Q4. How does it feel to watch IU on the big screen? It was pretty memorable that director Lee Kyungmi, Im Pil Sung, Jeon Go Woon and Kim Jong Gwan made the best of ‘IU’ through their own style and story for the notebook streamable Netflix series, <Persona>.
IU: I definitely want to work with these four directors again someday. I had a lot of fun being used as their main material. The series will be remembered as a special work of mine for a long time.
Q5. Having to experience various writers’ attention and insights focused on yourself at the same time is definitely a special case for an actress. There must have been four interpretations and utilization methods of ‘IU’, what side of you did they see or bring out of you?
IU: The most interesting thing was that all of the four directors looked at me with some projection of themselves. <Persona> is a collection of four short films in which an actress is expressed through four different perceptions. Due to the structure of the series, it can be seen as an actress-centered project, but I think it is a work that can rather showcase the individuality and color of each director. The process of understanding what the directors were trying to project through me was very interesting and fascinating. I think we definitely have something in common, and that it’s only possible because we could relate to each other a lot.
Q6. So was ‘IU’ observing the directors who were observing ‘IU’ too? When you first watched the completed version of <Persona>, was there any side of yours that you found unfamiliar?
IU: I was especially unfamiliar with myself during the scene where my character Jieun-ie threw away her racket and shouted “Fxxk You!” after continuously losing in the game and when she sat on the floor with her injured knees and cried while asking Doona not to marry her father in director Lee Kyung Mi’s <Love Set>. Maybe because I was exhausted from running around the tennis court all day in summer, so I kind of struggled with managing my body and face expressions. But I didn’t hate it at all. Also, when I watched the scene where I told my friend Hye-Bok that she’s cute in director Jeon Go Woon’s <Kiss Burn>, I thought to myself, “Oh, I’m quite dependable now huh?”.
Q7. Among the four episodes that were released in sequence, I found <Love Set> in which you had a tennis battle with Bae doona the most interesting. I liked how it began with a woman and a daughter confronting each other over a man and only to end with just great tension between women filling the air. Was there something IU saw in Bae Doona?
IU: I value natural processes in relationships. It’s actually not easy to be natural. Especially if I meet someone for work, we’ll have to skip all the trivial steps and go straight down to business, so there are times it (relationship) feels like a weak building in its early stages of construction. To get close quickly and approach someone comfortably are the virtues and abilities necessary when working but I’m so clumsy at that. But occasionally there is this kind of person who would think ‘it’s natural for anyone to be unnatural/ awkward at times like this’ and go all the way to embrace the other person’s stiffness too. Bae Doona sunbaenim is that kind of person.
Q8. Were you grateful that (Bae Doona) never rushed you and you could take your time?
IU: She’s so cool that I’ve fallen for her. Although it was just a short film, she’s a partner that I had to exchange many emotions and walk in step with. She never once rushed me and always waited for me. She didn’t even make it seem like she’s waiting for me, in case I took notice, she would feign ignorance and look far away coolly as she waits! Haha. There are many other reasons too, but from the very first time I meet someone, I can tell if the person is really cool.
Q9. How is the joy from completing your music and performing different from the joy from acting?
IU: I feel that the process I go through from working on a song from my studio to the recording room and the process of having multiple takes at the filming site are rather similar. Making decisions repeatedly to produce the best possible result, in the period of time provided, gives me strong willpower I guess? Of course, I often feel distressed by areas I am lacking in, but those are also the moments that I feel my heart beating the fastest and blood coursing through my veins. Concerts are really different though. There’s no time to make decisions. I just go with the flow. It’s not like I can discuss with the audience how I want that day’s concert to go. The audience takes the initiative in this. As for me, there’s nothing else I can do, but to present what I have prepared, without making any mistakes. I enjoy following my audience to the places that they take me to.
Q10. You’ve drawn an analogy and explanation between music and acting in a way I have never heard of before. I would like to take a peek at your diary or notepad with such thoughts...
IU: I haven’t written in my diary for the past four months or so. It seems I’m feeling slightly lethargic and bored recently. So I’m trying out new things and put a pause on writing in my diary, which I have been writing in daily without fail, since my trainee days when I was 15 years old. That’s a kind of deviation from the norm for me. Letting go one by one the rules I made for myself and kept like a habit. Anyway, I realised that my world hasn’t exactly collapsed (because of that).
Q11. Did you find out that the rules and methods others aren’t unaware of that only you are privy to, and seem to sustain your way of living, won’t cause your ‘house’ to crumble even if you remove one of those pillars?
IU: There are quite a number of things that I try hard to not forget. Writing in my diary was one of those things that I put effort in. Now I want to naturally forget things that slip my mind. I think it’ll be fine.
Q12. Be it from your notepad or diary, or what you say, there are bound to be unique phrases or expressions that you use often. I think the words you subconsciously tend to use reflect the values that are important to you. Do you have any of such phrases?
IU: Based on frequency, I think I use ‘amulaedo’ (somehow / by the looks of it) the most often... Does that make me someone who places importance on the result? (laughs) I use the words ‘interest’ and ‘charm/appeal’ a lot too. Come to think of it, what I’m most afraid of is none other than boredom. I’d rather be tired or sad instead. ‘Sense of responsibility’ is a phrase I use a lot too.
Q13. What do you do when you are feeling troubled? Is there any rule or pattern you use to overcome it?
IU: I do the dishes to confront what’s troubling me. Washing the dishes to make them squeaky clean suddenly becomes the most important thing and what was troubling me earlier becomes less of a threat. After washing the dishes, even though it’s not much, I feel a sense of accomplishment and my stress slightly disappears too.
Q14. What about when you’re feeling stressed from writing lyrics or working on something? Does just putting a pause on the lyric writing and then doing the dishes fix it (from a previous question about stress relief)?
IU: There is a method that lyricist Kim Eana told me about. She told me if the lyrics I’m writing start to feel like they don’t belong to me or if it starts to feel difficult, go look up the dictionary definition of that word. For example, among the many definitions of the word, ‘sa-rang (love)’, there are definitions like ‘the past tense for ‘seng-gak (an intention of the heart)’ (i.e. it is now gone)’ or ‘to passionately miss [something/someone]’. So by the nature of its definition, is ‘sa-rang (love)’ something that begins with the absence of something?’ These types of thoughts come to mind. This is something I found out through that approach: there isn’t an opposite word for ‘loneliness’. I guess it’s because there isn’t anything that can counter/defeat loneliness. I can say that from now on, one of the themes [in my work] I’ll be keeping is “finding the opposite of loneliness”.
Q15. Producing for your own music- what is that process like and what does it mean to you?
IU: It carries the meaning of ‘I am the master of IU’? Haha, of course it’s the most enjoyable, the most difficult, the most meaningful, and the most economical thing I do.
Q16. Is there a topic you’ve been really into lately?
IU: ‘Big Size’. Ever since I was younger, to me easy-listening music; and, whether for books or for movies, I had always preferred them to be about small and trivial things rather than something with a big narrative. But these days, I’m way more interested in bigger topics. I want to make “big music”. And because of that, I’m thinking about a singing style that’s deeper and with lower sounds. Even if it’s risky, I want to make my world that was always safe and small, a bit bigger.
Q17. When IU did remakes of Kim Changwan (member of the band, Saneulim) and Jo Dukbae’s songs and did a duet with Choi Baekho, you were able to prove your ability to interpret songs really well. Have you ever thought about trying out a genre or style that people would never imagine you doing? Like trying trot or something.
IU: I’m not the type to only specialize in and stick with one genre. Even with my recent songs, they’re each different in their own ways. From when I first started liking music when I was younger until now, I’ve never really thought much about the concept of music genres. Trot is cool. Recently I’ve been watching <Mister Trot (tv show)> and after reading the lyrics of trot songs I was previously familiar with, I realized that ‘wow I didn’t know the lyrics were this deep’, ‘wow so trot is music that has you singing in that way and with that type of facial expression despite the song carrying this much weight in its lyrics’. Once my inner energy gets stronger, I definitely want to try trot. With hip hop, the breadth of topics you can address and the greater amount of words you can use in a song has always been appealing to me.
Q18. After it was known that IU was going to be this month’s cover model for <W Magazine>, a well known broadcasting PD told me there is something I must ask you: when did you yourself first start getting an inkling that you are an extraordinary person? It’s a lie if you answer with ‘I don’t think I’m an extraordinary person’, so they told me to ask you more persistently.
IU: Hahaaa, if I were to uninhibitedly answer with honesty, I’m not exactly sure if this was the first time, but it might be that time when I was 6 or 7 years old and I won the big prize in a speech contest. It’s not like that now but when I was younger, whenever people had their eyes on me when i was in front of people, I got excited. I even loved the nervousness.
Q19. What comes to mind when you think about ‘teenage years and parents’?
IU: If I were to open it up, my teenage years are the color grey. I think ‘difficult’ is the right word for it. If I think about my parents, I would smile because I think they are such a cute and incompatible pair. Even though I do get a heavy feeling thinking about my mom, just thinking about my dad makes me laugh. If my dad and I were to both fall in water, my dad would try to swim out first. I’m grateful that when I think about him, I laugh rather than feel sentimental. If we both fell into water, it’s okay if he doesn’t save me so I hope he can continue to live life the way he does. He’s like the biggest present in my life.
Q20. If present IU were to give one advice to that era’s teenage IU, what would you say?
IU: She’s more unnie than me so I don’t dare give any advice to her. It’s only thanks to her that I live this good life I have now. If I were to say anything, I’d just ask her how she’d like me to live my life from here on out.
Q21. Did Lee Jieun (IU real name) know that IU was gonna grow into such a respectable artist? Was IU destined to become the IU of today?
IU: I think the questions I’ve been asked today have been more difficult than any I’ve received before. They’re hard but interesting and because I want to answer honestly, it’s making me think deeply. Hmm..I also didn’t know that I was going to be in this [career] for this long. I think my reality right now is way more amazing than anything I had ever wished for or wanted when I was younger. I realized that making music for people was something that’s a lot harder and amazing than I thought. And if I were to be more honest? Of course, for someone like me to become someone like IU is an unbelievable and great accomplishment. It’s something I’m extremely proud of and grateful for. Even so, I still don’t feel completely satisfied by my body of work so far. To answer the question of whether it was destiny, I would say ‘it’s only half’ because even though I have grown more than I had ever dreamed of, I think I have yet to become such a praiseworthy artist. However, who I am today is the result of a combination of my personality and unexplainable luck and since it’s hard for people to manipulate their personality or luck, I guess you can call it destiny, haha.
Q22. What kind of person are you jealous of?
IU: I’m jealous of people that are way more diligent and hardworking than I am. People who have no complaints despite living that life make me feel helpless. It makes me feel inferior and that I have accomplished nothing. And also people in the genius category. I’m jealous of people who are able to do things easily while enjoying it while I have to exert all the force in the world just to barely make it. And because of that, I’m jealous of people who live with completely different worries from me.
Q23. What is one of IU’s weaknesses?
IU: To be honest, I am quite lazy. I’m also timid. I’m not the type to enjoy things like challenges and if it’s not something I feel a sense of stability from, it’s hard for me to assimilate to or enjoy it. So that’s why I really respect people who are able to enjoy challenges and I’m jealous of them.
Q24. To the IU that you think is lazy, what do you think is the closest thing to happiness?
IU: Being able to feel relaxed as I eat a meal deliciously and then having a big bar of chocolate afterwards for dessert.
Q25. What comes to mind when you look in the mirror?
IU: I used to deny it but I’ve started to acknowledge it recently “Wow I look exactly like my younger brother”.
Q26. In your lyrics, you’ve once said “I want to become a ‘moist’ woman (Twenty-three lyrics)”. I’ve realized as I get older that it’s important to become a ‘moist’ person and that I should age with moisture (i.e. have substance?) . What is something that IU thinks makes someone not ‘dry’ but ‘moist’?
IU: Things that make your heart beat like crazy. For example, love or ambitions that sometimes come popping up in your life? Hahaha! But I guess those things have the effect of a steam iron and can humidify your life automatically.
Q27. Is there something that, even for someone like you, at the core of, still hasn’t changed despite all the big and small changes?
IU: If I were to say a positive thing, it’s my sense of responsibility. My sense of responsibility is my number one token of merit that has dragged the lazy me by the collar to reach this point where I am now.

Persona - One Lee Ji Eun, Four Personas
IU is perhaps better known for her identity as a singer-songwriter rather than an actress, but she has mentioned her love for acting on a number of occasions, explaining that it allows her to assume different identities and express emotions in a manner that she may not be able to in reality.
Persona, a four-part anthology on Netflix that marks actress Lee Ji Eun’s first foray into the world of film-making, allows her to do precisely that: take on the challenge of portraying four characters with completely different personas, displaying a wide range of emotions that fans have hitherto not seen from her. Comprising four short films produced by four critically acclaimed Korean directors, each film is greatly different in terms of style and tone, with no apparent connection to each other - but I think they all tackle the theme of love and passion to some extent, manifested in different forms: jealousy and anger (Love Set); deceit and betrayal (Collector); friendship and revenge (Kiss Burn); as well as separation and loss (Walking at Night).
I’ll be completely honest – as these are essentially indie arthouse films with ambiguous plots and cryptic characters, they are an acquired taste which may not appeal to everyone; being no film expert myself, I’m not sure I understood everything that the filmmakers were trying to convey. But I certainly had great fun watching actress Lee Ji Eun take on four very different personas in each story, and also reading the thoughts of my fellow uaenas who have enthusiastically dissected the films. Let me just share my thoughts on each of the films as well.
(WARNING: Spoilers ahead)
Love Set
This was the film which I had been looking forward to most before its release, for the premise seemed so intriguing from the trailers: an angsty and jealous IU locking horns with her prospective stepmother (Bae Doona) in a game of tennis with high stakes, where the loser would “end it all” with the man of their shared affections (IU’s dad and Doona’s lover). I was also excited to see how IU would unleash her character’s unbridled fury that seemed to be the key motif of the story, especially since she had mentioned in interviews how challenging it was for her to portray anger in such a manner that was contrary to her personality.
I must confess that I was slightly disappointed when I first watched the film though, for the story didn’t seem to go beyond what we already knew would happen – IU and Doona engaging in a heated battle on the tennis court. A significant amount of time was devoted to slow motion shots of them whacking the tennis ball, and close-ups of their hot, reddened faces of intense agony that was almost painful to watch. I was also somewhat frustrated by the seeming apathy and emotional detachment of the two male characters (IU’s dad and an unnamed Caucasian friend haplessly dragged in to “seduce” Doona) – both sat silent and almost expressionless with their heads turning back and forth rhythmically like puppets following the movement of the tennis ball – a direct contrast to the fury and fierce energy displayed by the women on the courts. I couldn’t quite fathom why IU’s dad seemed indifferent to his daughter’s angry outbursts or suffering, even calmly saying “Out!” when she missed the ball and fell down – did it signify the fact he cared more for his lover and was rooting for her? Why then did he seem emotionless even though Doona was winning?
I did however enjoy observing the dynamics between the women and their contrasting personalities – Doona, the older and more mature of the two, was clearly at the upper hand throughout, remaining level-headed and taking an almost sadistic pleasure in calmly taunting IU; poor IU, on the other hand, was a loser not just in the tennis game but in her complete failure to rein in her emotions, seeming like a complete wreck with her expletive-laden outbursts. Towards the end, however, Doona handed over the tennis ball to IU with a gentle stroke of the thumb in what seemed like a conciliatory gesture, and told IU that she didn’t intend to marry her father, suggesting that she had never been serious about their bet to begin with – and ending off the movie on an almost anti-climactic note.
One thing which struck me was the sexual innuendoes that was evident throughout the story – the suggestive shrieks and panting with each hit of the tennis ball, the sensuous close-up shots of IU’s lips biting a plum, and of the women’s hot, sweaty bare skin – but I didn’t quite comprehend how it quite fit in with the context of the story. One of my fellow uaenas, however, has offered an intriguing explanation: that IU and Doona were actually in a sexual relationship before, with Doona betraying IU by getting together with her dad – which explained IU’s extreme agitation at the entire situation, and at puzzling moments like Doona’s flirtations with the Caucasian. The sexual innuendoes would then be a deliberate hint of the relationship between the two, with the tennis match signifying a lover’s quarrel, and the caressing of IU’s hand at the end a romantic gesture on Doona’s part. I think that’s a fascinating and plausible interpretation of the story, and could possibly also explain the two men’s indifference and insignificance throughout the show – they are mere spectators on the sidelines, observing the relationship that is key to the story: the secret passion between IU and Doona.
Collector
Prior to watching the film, Collector left the vaguest impression on me for I wasn’t sure what it was about beyond a love story between a man and a woman; as it turns out, this was the most memorable film, and my favourite of the series for its surreal, eerie plot and rich use of metaphors.
Director Im Pil-Sung has explained that in making this film, he was inspired by IU’s song Jam Jam - which is essentially about a non-committal and superficial relationship between a man and woman, with jam serving as a metaphor for the sugar-coating of lies and pretensions binding them together. And indeed, this idea of deceit in a relationship was evident in the film with the character of Eun portrayed by Ji Eun; while she seemed tender and gently seductive at times towards her entranced lover, there was also clear indifference in her attitude, shown from her boredom with his conversation attempts, and her open flirtations with other men. Her lover, however, was not completely innocent himself, for it seemed that he had betrayed his ex-fiancé by breaking off their engagement to be with Eun. This fact was revealed through an abrupt switch of scenes from his conversation with Eun to an empty white room in a surreal, clinical setting that seemed to represent his subconscious mind. In one particularly gruesome scene, the man’s head was sliced off in his subconscious state, suggesting a blow to his ego after finding out that Eun had gone travelling with two male friends. Notably, his head was fixed back to his neck after he had waxed lyrical to Eun about his pompous theory on the superiority of females, probably representing a restoration of his ego from the self-pleasure of his intellectual discourse.
Nothing however, could rival the shock factor from the bizarre twist towards the end of the story, when the man, egged on by Eun, literally dug out his heart of his body and handed it to her. As he sat motionlessly in tears, now a heartless man, Eun carefully placed her prized possession in a jar, and smilingly declared that she would “salt it to prevent it from rotting”. This, I think, was a chilling but clever reference to the following lines in Jam Jam:
“Tell me that you love me
Say the pretty things smeared on your lips
Sticky sticky, I’ll keep it pickled
So it won’t rot, for a long time”
In the final scene, the man opened up a small box which Eun had handed to him as a gift, only to find a miniature version of himself trapped in the empty white room – which I interpreted as symbolising that her parting gift to him was the gift of conscience, a reminder of his heartlessness for betraying his original lover.
The story left me unnerved and shaken with its gory and disturbing elements, but I loved its use of metaphors, and how it brought a whole new meaning to the lyrics of Jam Jam. What I appreciated most, however, was Ji Eun’s portrayal of the callous and mysterious seductress that Eun was; her acting was nuanced and deliberate, with subtle gestures and expressions that brought her character to life. I can never forget the look of rapt eagerness on Eun’s face, for instance, as she watched the man dig out his heart, and how she gently licked her lips at one point, almost like a predator anticipating a bite of its prey. Watching it gave me the chills, and made me forget that the Eun we saw onscreen was the lovable Lee Ji Eun who has inspired all kinds of emotions in me before, except for fear. In short, I think this film was the most effective in allowing her to take her acting skills at a whole new level, and to experiment with a different persona that viewers have never seen from her before.
Kiss Burn
Kiss Burn features Ji Eun as Hanna, a spirited school girl who visits the rural home of her good friend Hye Bok to seek her company, only to find her locked in by her authoritative father. Hye Bok’s hair has been shorn off by her father in a drunken fit, possibly as punishment for returning home with kiss marks after making out with a boy at a beach. Annoyed by his unjust behaviour, Hanna vows to exact revenge, and the two girls embark on a series of hilarious attempts at pulling off pranks to punish him.
Compared to the other films, the story is relatively light-hearted, with many comedic moments. However, it takes a slightly dark turn towards the end: while the girls’ deliberate and carefully thought-out pranks fail to achieve their desired outcome, a careless gesture – a flick of a cigarette butt into the chicken coop – eventually sparks off a fire, ironically turning out to be the biggest punishment for Hye Bok’s father, who works as a forest fire lookout.
Interestingly, the director chose to use chickens as a recurring motif to carry the dark humour of the story: in one of the early scenes, Hanna chomps on large chunks of roast chicken, and towards the end, the girls cheerily comment on smelling the aroma of fried chicken, blissfully unaware of the growing blaze presumably spread by a chicken which had gone astray after its tail caught fire in the coop.
In terms of acting, I think the role of Hanna was less of a ground-breaking one for Ji Eun, because it isn’t the first time we’ve seen her portray lively characters like that before. That doesn’t mean, however, that she didn’t do a good job in delivering her role – Hanna was a character with an endearing mix of rebelliousness and naiveté who found her way to my heart. For all her deviousness in conjuring pranks to seek revenge, Hanna still possessed an innocence about her, as evidenced from her curious probing of Hye Bok’s making out session, her amusing attempt at kissing herself to produce a hickey (after insisting wide-eyed to her friend that she knew how it was created), and her eagerness at visiting the beach (which Hye Bok claimed was a good place to “relieve stress” through making out). It was also a pleasure to watch Ji Eun’s chemistry with actress Shin Dal-gi, who played Hye Bok. Ji Eun had mentioned in interviews that director Jeon Go Won had employed unique techniques prior to the start of filming for the actresses to bond with each other, and that camaraderie was indeed evident onscreen, making the friendship between Hanna and Hye Bok a believable and funnily heartwarming one.
Walking at Night
Walking at Night appears to be a favourite amongst many uaenas, and I can see why: it is a hauntingly sad but beautiful and poetic piece, which would appeal to the sensibilities of those who gravitate towards IU’s sentimental ballads. I love it myself, and would rank it as my second favourite, after Collector.
Shot entirely in black and white, it tells the story of a man who meets his dead girlfriend in his dream, and together they revisit old haunts, reminisce their time together, and muse about love, life and death. Director Kim Jong Kwan had mentioned that he was inspired by the air of loneliness Ji Eun exudes despite her lively public persona, and indeed, the film delves into the theme of loneliness; mid-way through the show, it is revealed that the girl had killed herself because of her desperate sense of loneliness. Anxious, the man asks if he had caused her to be lonely, and she reassures him that he hadn’t:
“No. You were always there for me. There are people who know me and people who don’t. You were one of those who knew me, and there were others besides you. Those people were the ones who made me feel lonely. There were so many people who knew me other than you, but the way they treated me made me feel lonely. You were always there for me, but I just suffered in vain until I died.”
These poignant lines made my heart ache and struck a chord with me; it is so true that not being alone does not equate to not being lonely, for there have been moments in my life when I am surrounded by people, yet feel overwhelmed by an odd sense of loneliness.
Ji Eun’s words in the final scene are just as beautifully sad, a reminder of the ephemeral nature of our existence, and how we are all but transient visitors on this earth:
“Dreams and death lead to nowhere. They will end up nowhere…and eventually be forgotten. We are here, but no one will remember us. Everything is gone, and only the night remains.”
I’m not sure if I imagined it, but as the camera pans out in one of the final scenes to show the couple embracing, there appears to be a silhouette of a man standing in the distance. I recall shuddering involuntarily when I first noticed it, and even now, I feel an odd mix of fear and intrigue as I ponder who that man could be. Is it the protagonist himself, looking on at himself with his lover, as how we are wont to view ourselves from a third party perspective in dreams? Is he desperately trying to cling on to his memories before they fade? Or is it perhaps an onlooker bearing witness to their existence, proving that Ji Eun’s words may not entirely true – for while death leads us to disappear from this earth, we will still leave traces of ourselves behind, in the memories of those we’ve crossed paths with? I guess the beauty of such films is that there’s no right or wrong answer.
Compared to the other films, Walking at Night has the simplest narrative, with no notable climax; but I think its beauty lies in its simplicity, which allows us to focus on the poetic nature of its dialogue, and ruminate on what it means. In the same vein, Ji Eun’s acting is understated and restrained; there is no need for dramatic expressions, for so much of her emotions is conveyed in subtle ways, like a simple gesture, an inflexion in voice, or the expression in her large, soulful eyes.
Conclusion
Ji Eun’s acting career has been a rocky one, and there will always be people who love to hate her acting. Yet slowly but surely, she has been establishing her credentials as an actress over the years; My Ahjusshi was a breakthrough role which gained her recognition for her acting skills, and with Persona, she has proven once again her remarkable versatility as an actress, and added another notable work under her belt. Persona is probably not a show which will have mainstream appeal, but I believe it is the kind of acting project which will fulfil Ji Eun’s desire for more creative freedom, and I hope she’ll continue to take on such projects that will allow her to find joy in doing what she loves.

I honestly don’t see Spencer listening to k-pop artists past the first generation, and, even then, I really don’t see him listening to k-pop just in general. ( there are probably a few notable exceptions, as shown above ). He probably has some awareness of a few k-pop singers through OSTs for dramas, but, aside from that, Spencer’s tastes definitely run more traditional.
If anything, if he’s going to listen to anything outside of trot / ballads, he’d probably listen to more of the k-hip hop/rap scene, but nothing popularised. He’s very good at finding undercover k-hip hop/rap artists that he enjoys listening to, just as he does with the hip hop/rap scene in America.
