“Y/N, get back here!” Dean’s shout echoed through the halls of the bunker. Your laugh followed this, the high pitched giggles contrasting against Dean’s deeper voice. 

“Just let me have them!” you yelled back, quickly glancing behind you to make sure Dean wasn’t catching up to you. You started running away from him a good five seconds before he realized that he had to chase you to get his way, so you had a decent head start. 

When Sam suggested a movie night to help everyone relax after a particularly difficult hunt, it wasn’t too hard to convince everyone to join. Castiel was a bit harder to persuade, but with your promise of “wholesome bonding time,” he eventually agreed. Dean had gone to a gas station to get some snacks for the movies, and when he came back, you almost cried of happiness from seeing a pack of Twinkies in the pile of junk he’d returned with. You grabbed them and ran down the hallway, claiming them as yours, but since Dean wanted them too, he was now determined to get them from you by whatever means necessary. 

“They’re mine!” Dean said, and you detected a frown in his voice. You felt a pang of guilt at this; did he really want it that bad? You stopped running and turned around, screaming in shock when you saw that Dean was right behind you. 

“Why did you scream?” you heard a voice ask, and you looked over and saw Cas standing there looking confused and even a bit concerned. You hated to admit it - even to just yourself - but your heart leaped at the thought that Castiel could have been worried about you. That meant he cared at least a small amount, even if it wasn’t to the same degree that you cared for him. 

“Oh, hey angel,” you smiled at him, using the nickname you’d given him a while back. You’d never said it to his face before, though, only to Sam and Dean in conversations with them. 

“Hello...human,” Cas replied, tilting his head in puzzlement. His eyes squinted as he continued, “Why did you point out the fact that I’m an angel? I’m very aware-”

“It’s - it’s just a saying,” you interrupted, shaking your head and sharing an amused look with Dean. 

“Do you often point out to people that-”

“Nevermind, Cas,” Dean stopped him this time. “Are you here for movie night?”

Cas still looked confused, but he let it go and replied, “Yes, I was going to join Sam and wait for you two but then I heard Y/N scream and decided to make sure everything was okay here.” 

“Things are okay, we can go start the first movie,” you grinned up at the angel (you wouldn’t be using that nickname from now on). “Let’s go get started.” You started walking down the hallway next to Cas, Dean trailing behind the two of you. You looked behind you and saw him eyeing the Twinkies in your hand still, so you outstretched your arm backwards and shook your hand, letting him know that it was okay for him to take the package. 

Dean let out a sigh of relief as he took the snack, and you smiled, knowing that it probably meant a lot more to Dean that it did to you to have them. 

Once the three of you had joined Sam in front of the TV, you started the first movie. Everyone had decided that you would choose the first movie, with Dean insisting on “ladies first.” You took advantage of this and picked the most girly, teenage movie you could think of, waiting to see everyone’s reactions to the title screen. 

“Really?” Sam sighed when it came up. “Mean Girls? That movie is so overrated, you’ve gotta know that.”

“Hey!” you frowned. “It’s got some quotable moments that Cas should definitely know about. It’s a part of our culture, ya know.”

“Our culture,” Sam scoffed, looking over at Dean for some sort of agreement. Dean, however, was looking down in his lap, not making eye contact with anyone. “Oh, c’mon!” Sam exclaimed when he realized that he wouldn’t get the support he was looking for from Dean. “Don’t tell me you actually like this movie.”

“It’s got some quotable moments,” Dean mumbled, repeating what you had said about the movie. You laughed and looked up at Cas to gauge his reaction. He was smiling softly, looking at you from the corner of his eye every so often. 

“Cas? Is this okay?” you asked. If he didn’t want to watch it, you’d find something else. And not just because you’d be willing to do basically anything for him (although that played a role in it). Part of this reason this movie night was happening was to introduce Cas to more modern culture, and if he didn’t think he’d get anything from the movie, there was really no point in showing it to him. 

“This is just fine,” he replied, nodding. “I’m willing to watch anything with you.” When Dean muttered under his breath, “Of course you are,” Cas’ face flushed red and he continued, “With any of you, I mean. I enjoy all of your company.”

“Right,” Sam nodded, starting the movie. “Let’s just get this over with.” 

The opening scenes started, and usually your full attention would be on the movie, but you couldn’t stop thinking about what Cas had said. Did he actually slip up and mean to include the brothers in his statement about being willing to watch anything? Or was it you that made this whole night worthwhile for him? You tried not to think too much about it, choosing instead to scoot closer to Cas and hope that he didn’t notice your sudden closeness. 

For a while, it seemed like he either didn’t notice or didn’t care that you were almost touching him. His eyes stayed glued to the TV, his expression remaining stoic throughout the movie. Every once in a while, his eyes crinkled in amusement as you laughed at something that happened on screen. (He wouldn’t let anyone know this, but he was only smiling because of your laughter, not what was happening in the movie.)

Once Mean Girls was over, Dean said something about that being “a waste of two hours” and stood up to put another movie in. You didn’t mention the fact that he’d been even more invested in the movie than you had been. 

“What did you choose that is possibly better than Mean Girls?” you wondered. 

“You’ll see,” Dean said vaguely, sitting back down and throwing a handful of popcorn into his mouth. 

You all waited patiently to see what Dean had picked, and when the opening music for Star Wars began, you nodded. “Star Wars. That’s respectable.” 

“Of course it is,” Dean scoffed. “Watch and be changed forever,” he addressed Cas, nodding in his direction. 

“I don’t think a movie is going to change me forever,” Cas said. “It would require something much more important than this to alter the way I have been for as long as I’ve been alive.”

“Oh, this’ll do the trick,” Sam agreed with his brother. “Just you wait.”

You laughed quietly and resisted the urge to scoot even closer to Cas. His confusion just made him 10x more adorable. 

As the movie progressed, you noticed Cas’ pinky finger inching closer and closer to yours resting on the couch between the two of you. You looked up at him, wondering if he was doing it on purpose. He must have felt you staring at him, because he jerked his hand away and tried to avoid eye contact. 

“Come back,” you whispered, mustering up all of your courage and grabbing Cas’ hand that was now sitting in his lap after he’d moved it away from you. Cas looked at you with his eyebrows furrowed. When you smiled at him, though, he visibly relaxed and smiled back.

For the rest of the movie, you and Cas sat like that, your legs pressed against each other and your hands intertwined between the two of you. Even when the movie was over and Sam and Dean were asleep, the two of you sat in silence as the credits rolled across the screen. 

“How did you like the movie?” you asked quietly, as if talking above a whisper would ruin everything. 

“I think I liked this one better than the first,” he said, looking you in the eyes for the first time since you’d began holding hands. 

“Really? Why’s that?” you wondered. 

Cas broke eye contact for a moment and looked at the floor as he considered whether or not he should continue with what he was going to say. He eventually decided to go for it, answering, “Because we were sitting like this next to each other.”

Your heart felt like it was going to explode. Your face broke into a grin, and Cas knew that he’d made the right decision by admitting to how he was feeling. In this moment, you wanted nothing more than to grab Cas’ face and kiss him until you ran out of air, but you didn’t want to ruin what had taken this long to build up. 

“I liked that part, too,” you replied, losing your grip even more when Cas let out a breath you didn’t even notice he’d been holding. He squeezed your hand lightly, and you knew that even though you didn’t get around to doing so tonight, you would get your opportunity to kiss your angel.
