today i found a book that i accidentally permaborrowed after a breakup in 2014 and which i have held on to since then. have not read it. my solution to get it out of the house was to offer it to a friend interested in the subject matter. this "feels better" to me than donating it but i think i've in fact figured out emotional money laundering

Every time I think about Hugo my heart starts aching so deeply. He's the most powerful being in the world of OFF. He never uses his magic against anybody or anyone. His name's meaning implies intelligence and creativity, but he can't stand up and walk outside his room to let it come to fruition. He wants his mommy, but she's never there. He resents his dad, but at the same time is happy to see a reflection of that man, even if he was the one who made it, come to him. He's made three friends and he's honored the promises he made them, but they've never returned to honor the ones they made to him. He can't walk. He can imagine worlds outside of any bounds. Ok, but what's funny about the Veilguard's little book club is that while Emmrich's always rolling his eyes at the gauche horror novel plotlines with descriptions of walls that cry blood, possessed suits or armor and 'goodness gracious that's not how spirits and hauntings work' etc, you just KNOW he was secretly taking notes in the back of his mind...

The Best Books I Read in 2024

It’s the most magical time of the year—when I look back at my favourite works of fiction! I got a lot of reading in in 2024, in part due to a cunning scheme in which I made sure to always have an ebook on my phone, slowly yet successfully training myself to dip into a novel instead of tripping down into a Twitter hole (not that I’m on Twitter anymore; and not that it’s even called Twitter…) every time I had the urge to Scroll and look at Content. As always, I’ve enjoyed an eclectic mix of vibes and genres: on this list we’ve got a range from whimsical to harrowing, we’ve got high fantasy, contemporary rom-coms, modern gothic, and some fun hybrids including horror-romance and fantasy-mystery. More adult/general fiction than YA, you’ll notice, as I continue to explore the world outside my thesis niche—but I’ve always got room for a couple. 

Without further ado and without making this post any longer than it already is, let’s begin! Let me know if you also read any of these, and what you thought, and of course feel free to tell me all about your own favourite reads of 2024!

More g/t stories with dating apps and awkward first dates please! I want mixed societies with humans and giants living together. I want the main characters to match on an app and think “ooh, you’re my person and perfect in every way”, only for them to meet in real life and realize “oh shoot there’s a huge height difference”. I want awkward to the max — The giant trying so hard to be gentle and not scary but the tiny is very taken aback and has no clue what to do. I want the giant to be so smitten, and so is the tiny but they just need a bit more time to adjust to everything. I want slow burn and trust building and all the tender steps as they fall in love with each other. I want the tiny finally allowing the giant to hold them for the first time. I want the first time they cuddle together. I want the first time they kiss. Hell, give me all the firsts!

Tell me this isn’t the sweetest, fluffiest trope you can imagine. Ugh, need more of this
