Chapter 26: Flaws

Chapter 1 for New Readers - ffn mirror

Virgil tapped away at his laptop, writing an English paper. They were all working on homework together in a study room at the library. Logan suggested it, and it seemed like a very nice compromise between spending time together and actually doing their job as students. Virgil had plenty of time to work, but Patton was struggling a bit in psychology, and Roman had fallen back because of all the time he was practicing his parts. They shared the subject and could help each other, which was nice considering Virgil’s psychology schooling was pretty out of date and he couldn’t help much outside of the history portion. It looked like Logan was writing a history paper based on the books he had stacked next to his laptop for references and citations.

The room was on the small side, which made Virgil uncomfortable, but Virgil sat next to the door, and Roman would periodically put his hand on Virgil’s arm or leg and that calmed him down for the most part. Roman was probably just being affectionate, but maybe he caught Virgil’s glances at the doorway. Outside of the size of the room, though, it was very nice to just quietly work together. Virgil had read this story a million times and wasn’t a fan of writing another essay examining themes and symbolism on it. Especially since it was about community-mandated murder. But he could write it with minor effort on his part. It was just annoying.

If Logan and Virgil weren’t writing essays they probably would hold hands or something. Logan seemed to like doing it. Virgil couldn’t understand why a human would want to hold an ice cube, but he wasn’t complaining. Logan explained he didn’t always like contact and it was better to let Logan initiate or offer first. It sort of seemed like he’d be interested right now since sometimes he leaned towards Virgil while flipping through a book. Either way, Virgil was pretty happy. He enjoyed talking to Logan more than anything, so it didn’t bother him too much that Logan needed his space sometimes. Not that he didn’t very much enjoy kissing him. But in general, Patton and Roman were hanging off of Virgil any time Virgil dropped his shield, so he was pretty satisfied with the amount of contact he got these days. Virgil looked up from his laptop and met eyes with Roman. Roman shot a glance between Logan and Virgil and looked curiously back to Virgil. Virgil raised his eyebrow in confusion, trying to figure out what he was trying to communicate.

‘Are you going to tell him or what?’ Roman asked Virgil telepathically, looking pointedly at Logan again.

‘About the vampire thing? I don’t think he’d believe me if I tried. Why bother?’ Virgil thought back with a minuscule shrug.

‘I dunno, it seems dishonest to have him be literally the only person in the room who doesn’t know,’ Roman thought, motioning to the room with his highlighter.

‘If he doesn’t want to know, I won’t force it on him. Some people aren’t comfortable with the supernatural,’ Virgil replied mentally. ‘I at least need to get his opinion on that, first,’ Virgil motioned with his hand to try to express his priorities.

‘What are you guys thinking about?’ Patton thought, looking curiously to the two of them. Virgil hadn’t realized they had looked up from their textbook.

‘I think Virgil should tell Logan,’ Roman thought, eying Logan again and looking critically to Virgil.

‘Tell him he’s a vampire?’ Patton asked mentally, looking a little lost.

‘Yeah. They’re dating. It just doesn’t seem right,’ Roman thought, furrowing his eyebrows.

‘It’s not like you learn everything about somebody as soon as you start dating. It hasn’t been that long. Everybody’s got baggage,’ Virgil rolled his eyes. This was a little extra.

‘No, I think Ro’s right,’ Patton thought, looking concerned.

‘I don’t want to force it on him. He gets a choice on this, too,’ Virgil chided them mentally.

‘I think you’re just trying to avoid something hard,’ Patton looked critically at Virgil, too.

‘No, he’s doing that with you,’ Roman smirked impishly.

‘Roman, you want to come up to the roof with me to see if you bounce?’ Virgil thought warningly and glowered at Roman.

‘What are you avoiding with me, Virge?’ Patton looked at Virgil a little sourly.

‘Yeah, Virge, what are you not telling them?’ Roman leaned forward and smiled roguishly at Virgil.

‘We’re studying, you gobermouch, do we really have to do this now?’ Virgil crossed his arms and tapped impatiently on his jacket. Roman and Patton just stared at Virgil in bafflement for a moment.

‘Did I have a stroke? Was that even English?’ Roman raised his eyebrow.

‘Fine. Patton, I think your job makes it too hard to keep up with school. School is important. If you want to quit the craft store, I’d pay you more than they do. You’re part of my clan and entitled to the resources we have,’ Virgil huffed, looking at Patton imploringly. Patton looked surprised, considerate, and then angry. Well, shit.

“I understand that I am not the best at social cues, but it is odd that you two are glaring at each other with no words exchanged,” Logan pointed out, looking up from his laptop.

“Patton thinks I should tell you I’m a vampire and I want to give Patton money they don’t seem to want,” Virgil said flippantly, waving his hand. Roman looked shocked.

“This vampire joke again? It’s very odd, Patton. If Patton doesn’t want the money, don’t give it to them. I don’t understand why it is these things are being treated so critically,” Logan suggested and looked oddly between Patton and Virgil.

“Thanks, Logan, you’re right. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. I would appreciate it if Patton would consider it, but I don’t like forcing things on people, so I understand if you won’t take it. The best I can do is make the resources available and see if anyone is willing to take them. I will just be honest,” Virgil said, hoping Patton understands his meaning. Patton frowned at him, but they didn’t look angry. ‘Told you,’ He thought to Roman. Roman huffed and rolled his eyes dramatically. Patton looked sad for a moment longer, but smiled and nodded eventually. Virgil felt relieved.

“Okay. Sorry for distracting you, Lo,” Patton apologized quietly.

“We are here together, I’m happy to discuss things with you,” Logan smiled. Patton smiled much brighter after that and looked back down. They went back to studying in silence, but Roman was tapping his fingers on his thighs and watching Logan rather than getting back to studying.

‘You know, I’d love to see how far his disbelief goes,’ Roman thought. Patton looked up from their book in surprise.

‘I’m pretty curious myself,’ Virgil smirked mischievously.

‘Roller coaster,’ Roman thought empathetically. ‘It destroyed me,’

‘Don’t be mean to him,’ Patton chided them.

‘I’m not going to do that. I shouldn't have even done that to you, Ro. I’m just wondering how far he can rationalize things,’ Virgil shrugged, uncrossing his arms.

‘That doesn’t seem in good spirits,’ Patton frowned.

‘Of course it’s friendly, Pat! It’s not even at his expense. Obviously, it’s fine if he knows, so why not just make it a little easier to connect the dots?’ Roman motioned with his head toward Logan.

‘Well, that doesn’t sound bad when you say it like that,’ Patton admitted. ‘Just don’t pick on him,’

‘Why would I want to pick on my boyfriend?’ Virgil rolled his eyes. ‘That’s such a dick move. I like him,’ Virgil pulled a partial frown. ‘I’m just thinking that maybe there’s not much of a point of hiding anything,’ Virgil raised his eyebrows and shrugged.

‘You want to make bets on what makes him question if it’s really a joke or not?’ Roman wiggled his eyebrow temptingly.

‘$500 bucks it’s something drastic. He's pretty logical to a fault,’ Virgil smirked to Roman, who smiled back playfully.

‘This is leaning back into not-in-good-spirits territory,’ Patton frowned. Virgil paused and considered for a moment.

‘Pat’s probably right. Thanks for being my good sense,’ Virgil sighed and shot an appreciative smile to Patton. ‘I still think he’s stubborn, though. I seem to like stubborn people,’ Virgil chuckled quietly and shook his head, trying to focus on writing again.

‘Hey,’ Roman thought somewhat indignantly.

‘You are a little stubborn, Ro,’ Patton looked sheepishly at Roman.

‘Hey,’ Roman crossed his arms.

‘And I love that about you,’ Virgil shot Roman a smile and Roman softened slightly.

‘Fine,’ Roman huffed, not sounding completely satisfied. Virgil would just have to make it up to Roman later. ‘I guess we should get back to work, huh, Pat?’

‘Yeah,’ Patton thought, a little despondently.

‘I’ll get you guys ice cream or something if you can catch up, how about that?’ Virgil offered, trying to lift their moods.

‘Okay!’ Patton beamed at the idea.

‘It’s something to look forward too, I guess,’ Roman frowned slightly, but nodded.

“You want to get ice cream when we’re done, Logan? There’s a gelato place in walking distance with great ratings,” Virgil asked smoothly.

“Are you trying to motivate Patton?” Logan smirked at Virgil.

“That, too,” Virgil smiled back.

“Ice cream is delicious!” Patton pouted.

“Nuh-uh, Patton, this is gelato. This is better,” Roman said, tutting and shaking his finger.

“Why is it better?” Patton asked curiously.

“It’s Italian?” Roman shrugged, not sounding sure himself.

“Gelato is lower in calories, fat content, and has a silkier texture than ice cream. Flavor profiles are subjective, however,” Logan provided.

“Yeah, that,” Roman motioned to Logan. “I’ve heard about it, they also have espresso,” Roman winked to Virgil.

“Oh, I wasn't aware,” Virgil rubbed his hands together in delight.

“I suppose that means Virgil is motivated now, too,” Patton giggled.

“I have written multiple essays on the stupid short story, I needed it. There’s a limited amount of ways to rephrase the stupid symbolism to not plagiarize myself,” Virgil grunted and dourly looked back to his laptop.

“Did you take advanced English in high school?” Logan asked curiously.

“I’ve just already taken this class elsewhere,” Virgil shrugged, shooting a look at Roman. The corner of Roman’s mouth twitched upward.

“The credits would not transfer?” Logan asked, sounding disappointed.

“Nope,” Virgil popped the ‘p’ and Roman snickered slightly.

“I’m sorry to hear about the redundant material. Hopefully, the latter semesters will be more interesting,” Logan said with a small nod.

“Thanks,” Virgil smiled, holding out his hand. Logan took it curiously and Virgil pulled it up to kiss his knuckles. Virgil was rewarded with slowly spreading blush before letting go of his hand and getting back to work. Roman stuck out his tongue just above Virgil’s laptop screen and Virgil chuckled, finding Roman’s leg under the table to hold contact with him. Roman smiled slightly and Virgil got back to work.

“Oh my gosh, gelato is so good!” Patton squeaked, excitedly eating another tiny spoonful of their vanilla, cheesecake, and chocolate gelato. They sat on the covered patio outside the gelato shop, taking up the sole table outside. They were alone other than brief passers-by, which was pleasant. The sun was still in the process of setting, so it washed everything with orange-red light. Virgil tried his best to stay hidden in his hoodie and in the awning’s shade.

“The espresso is pretty nice, too,” Virgil smiled, taking another sip. The steam from the espresso fogged up his sunglasses.

“They just pulled that espresso shot, Virgil. Isn’t it too hot to imbibe?” Logan asked, sounding concerned.

“High heat tolerance,” Virgil shrugged. “It doesn’t feel too hot,” Roman snickered and took another bite of his dark chocolate, pistachio, and strawberry gelato. “Aren’t those weird together, Ro?” Virgil asked, looking at the disturbingly green gelato.

“No, it’s good, your tongue is just made for black coffee,” Roman smiled. “How were the gelato bites, Logan?”

“Very satisfactory,” Logan smiled widely.

“Do you have a bit of a sweet tooth you’ve been hiding?” Virgil asked, raising an eyebrow playfully.

“No,” Logan’s ears turned slightly pink.

“Hey, I can’t judge for that. Have you ever seen me have anything but black coffee?” Virgil chuckled and offered in solidarity.

“I- no, actually. No, I haven’t,” Logan sounded surprised. “I worry for your teeth enamel,” Logan laughed slightly, but his lips pulled into a slight frown.

“My enamel is fine,” Virgil smiled widely, not bothering to hide his fangs.

“Yes, your teeth look very healthy. I do not even see coffee staining. Do you have veneers? You have extremely long canines and sharp teeth,” Logan observed Virgil’s fangs.

“I’m going to go with no, since I don’t even know what that is. These are what I was born with,” Virgil chuckled.

“Are his teeth why you call Virgil a vampire, Patton?” Logan asked as he curiously examined Virgil’s fangs. Roman nearly sputtered on his gelato and covered his mouth, giggling wildly.

“Uh, yeah, that’s part of it!” Patton said awkwardly, running their hand through their hair nervously.

“What the other part?” Logan looked to Patton, and Virgil leaned forward, very interested in what Patton had to say.

“His temperature and the whole blood-drinking thing,” Patton shrugged, trying to look nonchalant but was clearly stressed by the situation.

“Coffee bean harvesting practices can be inhumane, but calling it blood is very… extra,” Logan chuckled slightly, looking proud of himself.

“Mmm, blood,” Virgil muttered, taking another drink of espresso. Roman choked on his gelato and Patton patted his back very quickly, looking panicked. “Pat’s talking about the fridge full of blood in my dorm, though,” Virgil looked to make sure Roman was all right, but after a cough or two Roman just looked incredibly bemused, putting his hand on his chest to breathe deeply. Patton sighed in relief.

“Why on earth would you have a refrigerator full of blood, Virgil?” Logan asked incredulously.

“Drinkin’, of course,” Virgil shrugged. Roman chuckled and shook his head disbelievingly, still catching his breath.

“Is this some gothic thing I am not aware of?” Logan asked, still sounding baffled.

“Actually, I think blood bars for goths used to be a thing until they were shut down for obvious health reasons,” Roman offered. “I’ve heard of it anyway,”

“I think those were just a myth perpetuated by the one vampire show,” Patton said, sounding unsure.

“Can you use your roller coaster powers on anything other than just you?” Roman asked curiously, motioning to Virgil.

“No, it’s just me,” Virgil shook his head. “I’d totally make my coffee float if I could. I always wanted to try drinking like an astronaut can in zero gravity,” Virgil leaned forward on his elbow and swished the espresso around in his cup.

“Oh, that would be so cool!” Patton chirped, playfully holding their little gelato spoon up in front of them and eating it as if it was free-floating. Virgil couldn’t help but grin at the adorableness. Even Logan was mesmerized in watching them and turned red when Patton smiled at him.

“What about your gift? You’ve never mentioned what it was before,” Roman asked, turning from watching Patton’s cute display to lean back and look towards Virgil.

“Hm, it’s not that obvious, visually. I wouldn’t do it, anyway,” Virgil said dismissively, flipping his hand slightly.

“If this is an extended joke at my expense, I do not appreciate it,” Logan frowned.

“I wouldn’t make you the butt of a joke, Logan. That would be awful. You’re just opting to stay out of a loop we’re trying to let you in on,” Virgil held out his hand for Logan to take, but Logan shook his head, still looking upset.

“Oh, oh, let's invite Deceit!” Patton blurted out excitedly. “His gift could convince him,” They added with a sly smile.

“I still think Virgil should just do the roller coaster thing,” Roman insisted. “It convinced me right away,”

“Ro, we’re sitting on a gelato shop patio, use your brain for once," Roman huffed an offended breath through his nose. “I’m still not positive if this is something he wants,” Virgil rolled his eyes. Patton pulled out their phone.

“What is something that I may or may not want?” Logan asked, sounding equally upset and intrigued.

“Knowing the actual size of the world around you,” Virgil said, sipping his coffee again.

“The earth is 6.6 sextillion tons,” Logan said resolutely.

“Wow, it is? That’s cool. I can’t really picture that,” Roman said, leaning back and lazily eating his gelato.

“D said he would come to hang out with us!” Patton announced cheerily.

“Really? He never responded when I asked, I was worried he was still mad at me,” Virgil muttered, feeling relieved.

“That’s your other boyfriend, correct?” Logan asked curiously.

“Yeah, he’s so great. If you like sass, sarcasm, and being over-the-top, anyway,” Virgil said dreamily.

“I think he was just interested in annoying you,” Patton said, looking down at their phone with an odd expression.

“That’s completely normal,” Virgil laughed affectionately.

“What about your gift, Pat? You are gelato powered right now, you could probably pull it off,” Roman suggested.

“I can only do it for a few seconds,” Patton muttered nervously, wringing their hands.

“What are you implying Patton can do?” Logan asked, examining Patton curiously.

“Patton can make a shield,” Roman said, motioning to them as if he were a showgirl showcasing a prize.

“If you want to show off, I doubt there’s any harm in it,” Virgil sipped his coffee. Virgil checked the skyline to see how far the sun has set to judge how much time they had before Deceit could start flitting there.

“Please don’t gloss over the supposition that Patton can make a shield. I would like to know what that means,” Logan said.

“Put your hand on Patton and they can show you,” Roman motioned to Patton with a big cheesy smile.

“If you don’t want to touch me, you can just hover your hand nearby,” Patton said, standing up out of their chair and moving it out of the way, staying just clear of the table. Logan stood up and held out his hand, hovering it close to Patton. Patton scrunched their face and focused, and Logan’s hand was pushed away. Patton exhaled, sounding strained. Virgil would be worried about the public display of powers if it didn’t just look like Logan pulled his hand back to any curious onlookers.

“What an amazing magic trick,” Logan said, looking at his hand. Roman laughed and finished off his ice cream. Logan sat back down, looking mystified.

“I bet you want seconds after that. You want more coffee, Virge?” Roman asked, getting up from his chair as Patton sat back down with a sigh.

“Yeah, thanks Ro,” Virgil smiled and squeezed his hand.

“Do you want a different flavor, Pat?” Roman asked and pushed his chair in.

“I want that gelato milkshake with the dark chocolate and hazelnut,” Patton replied, finishing their cup of gelato with a few scrapes against the side.

“You want seconds, Logan?” Roman paused before heading back inside to see if Logan wanted anything.

“No, thank you,” Logan nodded. Roman went inside. “How did you do that, Patton?” Logan asked, looking between his hand and Patton’s tired-looking face.

“It’s hard and takes a lot of focus,” Patton leaned back. “Come sit next to me. Please, V?” Patton asked, Patting Roman’s abandoned seat. Virgil switched seats for Patton. Patton leaned against Virgil and closed their eyes as soon as Virgil sat down.

“Good thing we’re getting you more food,” Virgil chuckled slightly. “I don’t know if you’d make the walk back without it,” He mused, reaching up to play with Patton’s hair for a second.

“I’m demanding a piggyback ride, either way,” Patton crossed their arms and nodded, still leaning tiredly against Virgil.

“I’m fine with that if my wonderful boyfriend is,” Virgil shrugged.

“If Patton requires assistance, back I would not be opposed to you helping them,” Logan said, possibly still trying to figure out the magic trick, because he was very distracted and checking his own hand.

“Hey, seat thief,” Roman grumbled as he came back with the milkshake for Patton and another espresso for Virgil. Patton pouted intensely at Roman. “Fine, I don’t need it, anyway. Are you ready to head back?” Roman huffed, but his annoyance melted away quickly at Patton’s expression.

“I am. I hope you explain to me how you did that trick sometime,” Logan asked in wonderment, getting up from the table.

“Only Patton can do that, sadly,” Roman sighed. Virgil got up and squatted down, and Patton leaned forward on his back. Virgil picked them up and did the rest of the work, turning around to let Patton grab their milkshake off the table and they took off back to the dorms. Roman held on to Virgil’s espresso for him while Virgil carried Patton.

“I would still be interested in learning the mechanics,” Logan said, sounding intrigued.

“So would modern science, probably,” Virgil joked airily. “Do you have time to meet D?” He asked Logan hopefully.

“I have finished my homework for now and am mostly caught up in my studies, I can spare some more of the evening,” Logan said, walking alongside Virgil. The sun had gotten low enough as they ate gelato and Virgil was free to walk around without gearing up, which he was very thankful for. Keeping his hands covered while carrying Patton would have been a pain in the ass. Hopefully, that meant that Deceit was on his way, too. Virgil missed him a lot.

“Drop your shield,” Patton whined.

“You should know I couldn’t drop my shield outside if I wanted, don’t you remember that knot Roman talked about?” Virgil groaned.

“I’ve named it Balthazar,” Roman chirped, sniffing Virgil’s coffee through the small mouthpiece.

“Okay,” Virgil drawled in bafflement, but just rolled with it. “Balthazar says the outside isn’t safe, so I can’t drop it,” Virgil supplied.

“I am proverbially lost once again,” Logan said, sounding annoyed.

“Logan, how do you feel about the supernatural?” Virgil asked plaintively.

“It is an interesting story,” Logan responded, sounding vexed and confused.

“How would you feel if the supernatural was real?” Virgil continued questioning him.

“That is not realistic, I don’t need to consider that,” Logan said. “Is this line of inquiry supposed to elucidate me in some way?”

“Yeah. Just, for the sake of argument, think about how you would feel about some supernatural things being real,” Roman said, flipping around his free hand and looking like he was considering drinking Virgil’s espresso. He better not be.

“Roman, the sun is down and you’re already up way too late for your morning classes, don’t you dare,” Virgil hissed in objection.

“Fine! Fine! You don’t have to bite my head off,” Roman huffed. “It just smells good is all,”

“One sip,” Virgil said, holding out a single finger. Roman smirked and took a drink.

“Hot,” Roman held out his tongue.

“Idiot,” Virgil chuckled.

“Are you okay, Roman? Here, have some of my milkshake, it’ll cool down your tongue,” Patton passed Roman their milkshake. Roman took it and sipped gratefully.

“That is unsanitary, Patton,” Logan looked a little disgusted as Roman passed Patton’s milkshake back.

“It’s fine if it’s Ro. Did you consider what Roman said?” Patton looked hopefully at Logan.

“It would be very interesting despite the implications being concerning,” Logan admitted, sounding a little frustrated.

“Would you care to extrapolate on the concerning implications?” Virgil asked plainly.

“Oh my god, you’re such a nerd,” Roman rolled his eyes at Virgil.

“You’re both sugared up and wild. Let the man think,” Virgil chuckled.

“I don’t like the concept that there are certain things are simply outside of human understanding,” Logan said after a moment of consideration.

“Well, that’s a tough one. But would you open to the possibility despite the drawbacks?” Virgil asked gently.

“I… suppose. But this is a silly thing to consider,” Logan insisted.

“It’s just friendly conversation, Logan. The silliness can be for the sake of recreation or whatever. I don’t speak nerd as fluently as Virgil,” Roman flipped his fingers dismissively.

“I suppose that’s fair. I’d be very interested to meet extraterrestrial life,” Logan said brightly, looking much more upbeat.

“What about terrestrial but still extra?” Roman asked, tittering. Virgil shot Roman a look of annoyance. Even if it was accurate, it was a little rude. One of those ‘just @ me next time’ kind of feelings. Roman stuck his tongue out at Virgil, looking very proud of himself.

“I’m afraid I don’t follow,” Logan furrowed his eyebrows.

“Non-human species on earth,” Virgil clarified.

“Who are dramatic and wear too much fake makeup,” Roman smirked. Okay, Virgil wasn’t sure if this was better or worse.

“I resent that, Princey. I may be a kettle but the pot shouldn’t throw stones in glass houses,” Virgil glowered at Roman.

“I, uh, that’s too many metaphors, Virge. I have absolutely no idea what you just said,” Patton said, a little flustered.

“Mood,” Roman said, nodding in agreement.

“You’re too dramatic to be calling me dramatic,” Virgil frowned.

“Boys, boys, you’re both dramatic,” Patton said patronizingly and patted Virgil’s head. Virgil sighed theatrically, perfectly aware of the irony. Roman tittered behind his hand at that.

“So you don’t object to me saying you wear too much makeup?” Roman continued to laugh at Virgil.

“It’s the style,” Virgil shrugged as much as he could manage with Patton on his back. Patton giggled at the bump.

“I like Virgil’s makeup,” Logan said, surprising Virgil. “His makeup aside, though, I think it could be educational to meet non-human species. I would love to study them,” Logan said. “I also agree that you both have had too much sugar,” He added, sounding a little amused by it. Patton giggled and took a long sip of milkshake.

“Cool. Vampires are real,” Virgil said matter-of-factly. Roman spat out something next to him. Damn it, was that fucker stealing his espresso again? He will never get to sleep. Virgil sighed deeply and shot Roman a glare. Roman grinned brightly back at him, making an innocent face. That bitch.

“This again? Honestly, it’s getting old. I thought this was a discussion for entertainment purposes,” Logan made a face.

“It can be two things!” Patton said cheerily. “Are werewolves real?”

“Yes, and they’re assholes,” Virgil groaned, remembering some unpleasant interactions with them.

“I’m pretty certain that’s racist, Virge,” Roman snickered.

“Fine, the limited number of werewolves I’ve met are assholes in that they picked fights I didn’t want to engage in. They’re just as territorial as vampires,” Virgil amended his statement. “There’s no stupid twilight rivalry or anything, it’s just territory nonsense. There’s a reason I don’t set one,” The annoyance with them continued to leak out in his voice despite trying to stay neutral.

“D mentioned mermaids, are those real?” Roman asked excitedly.

“Yes, but they don’t look anything like Ariel. There’s one I met in France that really knew how to jam,” Virgil answered this one much more jauntily. He was a fan of merpeople.

“When were you in France?” Logan asked incredulously.

“Mid-1800s? I was with D at the time,” Virgil said, looking up and trying to remember specifics, but he couldn’t. He shook his head slightly as he gave up.

“And danced the paso doble with him,” Roman snickered behind his hand. Virgil shot Roman a look, but he put up the innocent face again. Virgil could only diagnose him with too much texting with D combined with espresso. Or maybe he’s just feeling like being a bastard today, which was a mood.

“You have to let me see!” Patton said, bouncing slightly in Virgil’s arms.

“Pat, be careful, I don’t want to drop you,” Virgil hissed and held Patton tighter.

“You won’t drop me,” Patton wrapped their arms around Virgil’s neck, putting their milkshake right next to his face.

“I don’t have a dress for it,” Virgil said dismissively. “And I’m not hand-sewing one again, I continue to be thankful for electricity,” Virgil groaned.

“Then we’ll go shopping,” Roman smirked and held up an arm as he suggested.

“I regret ever suggesting gelato,” Virgil rolled his eyes and huffed at the sugared-up idiots.

“No, you don’t,” Patton grinned against Virgil’s ear and nestled their head into his neck.

“No, I don’t,” Virgil laughed in agreement. It was nice to see them so happy, even if he and Logan were slightly distressed with their nonsense.

“You are very creative, Virgil,” Logan said dismissively.

“Thanks?” Virgil raised his eyebrow. Virgil couldn’t blame him for needing more proof. Maybe this wasn’t the best idea, but Virgil was already in it and may as well finish the job. The delightful and telltale thrum of reconnecting with Deceit hit as they continued their trek back to the dorms.

“D’s near!” Patton cheered, jumping again. Virgil flinched from the sudden high volume declaration.

“Pat, you’re right next to my ear,” Virgil hissed, wishing he could reach up to rub his ear.

“Sorry!” Patton whispered apologetically and squeezed Virgil lightly. Virgil rolled his eyes. This was all getting ridiculous.

So, I wrote a thing about Remus and Sirius fighting with Dumbledore over custody of Harry post POA. I got just a few lines of dialogue and like a snippet of a scene stuck in my head, demanding that I write it out. It doesn’t feel like a complete thing, like a real one shot or something, so I’m not going to post it to AO3 right now. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but I wanted to make it an AU where Sirius is now free (because that’s my favorite canon divergence) and has worked things out with Remus and has already absconded with Harry. Also, Lyall Lupin is here, because I head canon him as being both alive and being a cranky badass, and I love him (also Remus, Sirius, and Harry are staying with Lyall because we all know Remus’s cottage isn’t fit for reasonable human habitation, and fuck Grimmauld Place). Again, I don’t know what I’m doing with this, maybe it belongs to a longer fic, but if so I probably won’t be writing that fic for a while yet. Until then, it’s just a random little scene I felt the desire to write.

They Apparated from the Burrow back to Wales rather than take the Floo. It was supposed to be a quick stop only, just to grab a few things before spending the next two nights back at Remus’s cottage. Remus had suggested it, feeling that without the mitigating influence of Harry in the house the tensions between Lyall and Sirius might blossom into open warfare. Better for them all that they all give each other a little space.

Then Lyall met them at the door, a grim scowl on his face and a large mug of coffee in hand. “You have a visitor in the kitchen,” he said tightly.

“Ah, I thought we might sometime soon,” Remus replied with a sigh.

“Bollocks,” Sirius added unhelpfully.

At least Dumbledore had waited until Harry was off to the World Cup with the Weasleys. This was not going to be a pleasant conversation for anyone involved, Remus imagined.

He could feel the storm already gathering strength as he and Sirius followed Lyall back through the house to the kitchen. Sirius had been doing so well controlling his temper, but that had been for Harry’s sake, Remus knew. They had both held their tongues over the past week every time Harry let some new, horrifying kernel of information slip out about his life with the Dursleys.

Harry wasn’t here though, and Remus had been anticipating an explosion of Sirius’s fury and horror once they were safely back at his cottage. Hell, Remus had planned to add his own rage to the mix. They weren’t going to get their chance to scream their frustrations into the void though. At least, not before they were forced to have a long conversation with Albus Dumbledore. A conversation that might very easily devolve into shouting.

Remus winced; pitting Sirius against Dumbledore was very nearly the definition of an unstoppable force meeting and immovable object.

Dumbledore sat at the kitchen table, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup that had not come from the cabinet above Lyall’s sink. Knowing his father, Lyall probably hadn’t offered Dumbledore any sort of refreshment. Honestly, Remus was surprised his father had let the headmaster into the house in the first place.

Looking up at them, Dumbledore smiled. It seemed so warm, so genuine, that Remus almost believed this might not be the fight he’d expected. Maybe Dumbledore just had a few reasonable concerns that they could smooth over and come to an easy, agreed upon solution to Harry’s custody situation.

Then he remembered all the letters he’d sent, the pleas to be allowed to visit Harry, or send him letters, or even get updates on how he was doing. Dumbledore had answered so politely and sympathetically, always cloaking his very firm no in kindness.

“Good afternoon, Remus, Sirius,” Dumbledore said with a smile. “Would you like a biscuit?” He gestured to a tin of iced lemon biscuits that he’d clearly brought with him. Remus’s sweet tooth had come straight from his mother; Lyall had no taste for chocolate or other sweets and rarely kept them in the house.

“No,” Sirius said sharply.

“No thank you,” Remus added a little more politely.

Dumbledore’s smile never faltered. “Ah, well, we have some very important things to discuss then, namely regarding Harry.” He gestured to the chairs opposite him. Lyall harrumphed around a sip of his coffee. Sirius and Remus both sat though, perhaps some inborn obedience lingered after all these years.

To Remus’s surprise, his father refilled his coffee mug and settled back against the counter, ready to watch the show.

“Dad, could you give us a few minutes?” Remus asked.

Lyall crossed his arms over his chest, a stubborn tilt to his chin. “You can talk as long as you’d like, but this is my house and I won’t be thrown out of my own bloody kitchen for anyone or anything.”

“That’s quite all right, Remus,” Dumbledore said politely. “As the only parent present, I’m sure your father has valuable insight into the rigors and complications of raising a child.”

“You want my insight?” Lyall asked, nostrils flaring. “Ignoring the rest of this clusterfuck, you should have given the boy to Remus thirteen years ago.”

That caught them all by surprise. Remus let out a long breath and couldn’t seem to draw in a new one. It was a thought he’d had himself over the years. For the most part, he’d been able to silence it by telling himself that Harry was better off with the Dursleys. That they would be able to provide for him, care for him better than Remus ever would have been able to—poor, jobless, grieving mess that he had been after the war. Then he’d met the teenaged Harry and had slowly learned how much of a lie that had been. A lie he’d told himself, but one that Dumbledore had corroborated in his own gentle way.

Even Lyall, who had once cautioned Remus about how difficult it would be for him to ever have or raise children, believed Harry would have been better off with Remus than the Dursleys.

“He’s damned right,” Sirius snapped. He turned to give Lyall a solemn nod. They might not get along, but on this front the two of them were in complete agreement. “Lily was estranged from her sister for good reasons. If I wasn’t able to take Harry in, James and Lily would have wanted him to go to Remus, and you know it, Albus.”

“Dad, Sirius…” Remus began with a sigh.

“They could have come here,” Lyall said before Remus could get another self-defeating word out. “I’d have taken them both in in an instant. We might not have had a lot, but I was always able to keep a roof over my family’s head and food on the table. Harry would have been cared for…loved.”

“But he would not have been safe,” Dumbledore interjected.

“And what precisely is that supposed to mean?” Lyall growled.

Dumbledore sighed. “I meant no slights against either Remus or yourself, Lyall,” the headmaster assured them. “Rather, I was speaking about protections provided by your house.”

Lyall’s hackles rose almost as much at the insult to his home as they had over the affront to his person. Before he could curse or yell at the headmaster though, Remus jumped back into the conversation.

“This isn’t a permanent situation,” Remus insisted. “My cottage is too small for three people, but we’re making other arrangements.”

“I was planning to have a new house built on my uncle’s property,” Sirius added. “It’s secluded and the land is already well protected. We can add as many spells and charms to the house as you see fit, Albus, but we can’t send Harry back to live with those…those…toerags!”

Remus had to bite his lip to keep from laughing as Sirius dragged out Lily’s favorite childhood insult to keep from swearing. There was nothing funny about the sadly immovable expression on Dumbledore’s face. It radiated understanding and empathy, but insisted their arguments had not changed his mind.

“Harry is protected by powerful magic while he lives with his aunt and uncle,” Dumbledore said patiently. “Protections I’m afraid neither of you will be able to replicate. Lily sacrificed herself to save Harry’s life, and that sacrifice created a lingering protection in Harry’s very blood. It’s why Voldemort cannot bear to touch him without pain. It also enabled me to cast a powerful charm that was sealed when Petunia Dursley accepted her nephew into her home.”

“A bond of blood charm,” Lyall raised a questioning eyebrow at Dumbledore. “That’s the charm you’re referring to, isn’t it?”

“It is,” Dumbledore said with a nod. “You’re familiar with it?”

Lyall snorted. “I married a Muggle woman and raised a son with lycanthropy during a time when a maniac and his followers would have happily killed the lot of us for either of those things. I’m very familiar with protection spells.” Remus resisted the urge to flinch at the reminder that his condition had put his parents at risk for years. His father didn’t sound bitter about it though. He actually seemed rather proud.

“That’s how I know you’re feeding these two a cartload of erumpent shite,” Lyall added.

Dumbledore blinked surprised blue eyes at Lyall’s proclamation.

“There’s no such thing as a perfect protection charm,” Lyall continued. “If there was everyone would use it, and we’d all have nothing to worry about. Bonds of blood can be powerful protection, especially since the circumstances required to create them are rare and not easily replicated.” Lyall explained. “They’ve got one hell of a weak spot though. The protections are only as powerful as the bonds between the living, not the blood of the sacrifice. I can think of half a dozen ways to undo one, especially if the boy’s relatives are half the wankstains my son and Black here claim they are.”

“They’re worse,” Sirius muttered, though no one paid him any mind.

Dumbledore frowned. He might have been prepared for Remus and Sirius and all their emotional arguments, but he obviously hadn’t counted on Lyall. “Petunia Dursley knowingly activated the charm when she took Harry into her home and care. She accepted the bond.”

Sirius looked ready to snap at the word care, but Remus squeezed his shoulder to stop him. Their anger wouldn’t win this fight, but if his father knew something that might…

Lyall glowered at Dumbledore as if the man had personally challenged him. “The boy’s aunt might have taken him in and activated the charm, but either one of them can break it easily. Bonds of blood are finicky magic, full of loopholes, technicalities, and with plenty of ways for a person to break the charm completely by accident.” He set his mug down so he could tick points off on his fingers. “One wrong word spoken during an argument could undo the whole thing. If this aunt ever told Harry to ‘get out’ in the wrong tone, or if Harry ever claimed his aunt’s house wasn’t his home—Poof! There goes your fancy charm. And how far would you say these Dursleys would go to protect the boy? From what Harry himself said they don’t seem to like him much, let alone love him.”

Dumbledore sighed. “Reluctant or not, she still took him in and—”

“And what would she do if someone were to threaten her own son? If some shady bastard came up to her on the street—away from that protected house—and said ‘we’ll kill your own boy if you don’t give us the other one,’ or if they offered her money—a fortune in exchange for an unwanted, unloved nephew? That’s the flaw of blood bond charms, almost similar to the Fidelius that caused you lot so much grief. The bond relies on trust, on love. Without that it’s fragile as a thread.”

“The Dursleys wouldn’t suffer a hangnail to protect Harry, and you know it,” Sirius snarled at Dumbledore.

“Are you even sure the charm’s still active?” Remus asked. “Your protections saved Harry his first year, we’re not denying that, but a lot has happened between Harry and the Dursleys since then, none of it good.”

“Most of it abusive,” Sirius added under his breath.

The headmaster hesitated. He looked caught between frustration, guilt, and exasperation. Remus felt a stab of fury. His father had poked these holes in Dumbledore’s plan in less than five minutes, Dumbledore himself had to have considered these things over the last decade.

“I understand that it might have been the best option at the time given…everything else that happened,” Remus said diplomatically. He didn’t want to be the damn peacekeeper here, but it obviously wasn’t going to be Sirius or even his father. If pushed they were both likely to snap and shove right back. “However, things have changed, Albus. Sirius and I want Harry. We’d both die to protect him. That has to be worth something.”

“Especially when you consider Harry doesn’t want to live with the Dursleys. He’d known me for all of an hour—half of which he spent thinking I’d helped kill his parents—and he asked if he could move in with me. What sort of life must he have had that moving in with an escaped felon he barely knew sounded like a step up? What did they—”

Sirius’s diatribe choked off in the middle of his sentence. He closed his eyes and sucked in a deep shaky breath. Remus opened his mouth to take up where his partner had left off, to argue, to fight, to rage even, but the words caught in his throat as Sirius’s hand settled atop his tightly balled fist. When Sirius’s eyes opened again they fixed on the table before him, but Remus could tell he wasn’t actually seeing it.

When Sirius spoke the anger was gone from his voice, replaced by something soft and frighteningly brittle. “My family’s house was very well protected. There were truly ancient runes inscribed in the foundations, and generations of Blacks had layered spells and charms into every brick and stone and floorboard—my father was practically obsessed with it toward the end of his life. It was unplottable, invisible to Muggles, had anti-apparition and concealment charms, anything you could think of. I was as safe growing up there as a child could ever be…” Sirius pulled his gaze away from the table and his grey eyes locked with Dumbledore’s blue. “…From everything outside of those walls.”

Remus’s fist unclenched beneath Sirius’s hand, and he turned his palm up to clasp his partner’s fingers. Sirius gripped them tight in return. To that day, Remus was certain he still didn’t know the entirety of what had happened to Sirius within Grimmauld Place. He’d gleaned pieces of the puzzle over the years, some from Sirius himself, others from his own observations and suppositions. It was more than enough to know the terrible shape of what Sirius had suffered for sixteen years, if not all of the details.

“I made mistakes before,” Sirius continued. “Believe me, I know every facet of them intimately. I can’t undo them, but I would give my life to keep Harry safe. I would kill to protect him. So would Remus. I will do anything to protect him…anything except stand by and allow the very people who are supposed to care for him, to love him, hurt him in any way.”

His voice was still quiet, but there was a vicious passion beneath the words that spoke worlds. He had already spent twelve years in hell, but Remus didn’t doubt for one second that Sirius would storm straight back into Azkaban or Tartarus itself if it would spare Harry even a minute of suffering.

Remus squeezed the hand holding his. If it came to that, Sirius would not be going alone this time.

Sirius didn’t say another word, but his eyes stayed locked with Dumbledore’s, and—for the first time Remus could ever recall—it was Dumbledore who blinked first. It made him wonder how many pieces of the puzzle the headmaster had put together himself over the years, both about Sirius’s childhood and Harry’s own.

It wasn’t a surrender though. Remus could read as much in the way Dumbledore sighed and steepled his hands in front of him.

Lyall cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. “You’re all forgetting something,” he said quietly. His eyes darted to Sirius for a moment, wary, but with a new level of respect. “It’s Harry’s life you’re debating, he’s fourteen years old, more than old enough to understand the risks and have a say in this decision.”

Hi, could you do a high school ironstrange pleas ☺️♥️ I love your writing.

(I just watched Love, Simon so I’m in the mood for a high school AU with a happy ending. AO3)

Tony Stark and Stephen Strange hate each other. They’re relative geniuses and within their respective friend groups each holds the title of “insufferable asshole we don’t know why we hang out with.” Tony laughs it off and Stephen glares like that will make them stop saying it. It doesn’t. Tony and his crowd are the populars, though whether that’s because of Tony specifically or them as a group is yet to be seen. Stephen and his friends were well liked in their own right, minus Stephen, and ended up at all the same parties Tony and his friends did, but their groups weren’t friends with each other. Not for lack of trying, of course. No, they didn’t hang out because Stephen and Tony each threw raging fits when it happened.

When Pepper and Christine for lunch, their phones blew up with messages in the same thirty seconds. Pepper’s phone blew up literally a few minutes later, an action for which Tony had to do a lot of explaining. He was forced to remove the explosive devices he’d placed it Clint, Steve, Rhodey and Natasha’s phones. Of course, Stephen, Bruce, Thor, Jane and Billy all heard about it from Christine, who was more shocked than she had any right to be.

“It’s Tony Stark, Christine, they guy could blow up a wet piece of paper.” Stephen had sneered.

“Anyone could blow up a wet piece of paper if they strapped it to a bomb.” Thor said, always taking pleasure in undermining Stephen. It reminded him of the way he used to tease his adoptive brother Loki before he ran away.

“The point is, he would think to do that.” Stephen glared at Thor and Thor nodded sagely, barely hiding his amusement. “He’s a total nut job and someone should lock him up.”

“Funny,” Bruce says from where he’s sitting beside Thor. “He says the same thing about you.”

Stephen glares and Bruce just shrugs. Thor takes the glare much more seriously and leans closer to Bruce while glaring right back at Stephen. That protective streak he had seemed to be skewing in Bruce’s direction more often than not lately.

“He would. He’s threatened by my genius.”

Christine rolled her eyes and threw a perfectly good french fry at him, but it had to be done. “You two just need to get together already. I don’t care if it’s to hook up or get married and have one point seven children, but you guys seriously just need to work something out.”

“Oh please, like I’d ever stoop that low. I’m gay, not desperate.”

“Desperate isn’t really the word I would have used.” Bruce came to his defense. Then the rest of the table got involved, like they had any right to be discussing his private life.

“Testy,” Jane supplied, followed by Thor’s, “horny,” and Christine’s, “that all sounds like desperate to me.”

Stephen sighed and blew a strand of hair out of his eyes. “I’m not desperate for anything. I’d eat my shoe before I’d go on a date with Tony Stark.”“I can arrange that,” Jane smiled, “Besides, no one said anything about dates. Oooo, Stephen has a crush.”

“Whatever,” Stephen rolled his eyes. “You are all unhelpful. I’m leaving.”

“To go find Tony and make raucous love to him?” Thor asked, throwing his arm around Bruce and shaking him with his laughter. Bruce started laughing too, but he only had eyes for Thor.

“To get away from you idiots. Why am I friends with you?”

“We ask ourselves the same question everyday, Stephen,” Christine tells him with a smile that’s too sweet.

“I hate you.”

“Love you too. You should really think about doing something about that massive heart on you have for Tony.”

“Oh, haha, you’re so witty.” Stephen sneers at her and she just keeps smiling.

“Who’s got a heart on for me?” Tony Stark of all people asks as he’s walking by. “I can’t help but interrupt when I hear my name. It’s part self-defense and part narcissism.”

“Speak of the devil.” Stephen muttered under his breath. “My friends are all obsessed with you, why don’t you chat about that while I go anywhere else.”

“Oh, come on Stephen, don’t be mad. We love you.” Jane called as Stephen walked away, always the quickest to try to smooth things over.

He waved without looking back at them, a universal sign for exactly how done he was with them.

“What’s his problem?” Tony asked Christine, and Christine smiled.

“You.”

Tony tilted his head curiously and then looked back after Stephen. “Really?” he licked his lips just a little as he watched Stephen’s retreat. “Do tell.” He sat down in Stephen’s recently vacated spot.

“He hates you.” Thor tells him cheerily, and Jane nods her affirmation.

“That’s what he says anyway. Bruce says you hate him too.”

“Well sure, the guy’s a total asshole. What’s this about me being his problem though?”

“If you’re only asking so you can use it against him-” Christine started, but Tony waved away her concern.

“Relax, I draw the line at tugging on people’s heart strings, even I’m not that much of an asshole. Does he like me?”

“If I answer that will you promise never to blow up anyone else’s phones because you’re jealous they’re stealing your friends.” Christine raised an eyebrow, narrowing her eyes in scrutiny.

“Hand to Thor, I won’t. Spill.”

Jane squealed and hit Thor in the arm. “Oh my god we’re finally getting them together.”

“Hey, no one said anything about together. I just want to know what the deal is. I’m not admitting to anything.”

“Asking was as good as admitting.” Christine rolled her eyes. “Alright, here’s the deal.”

Stephen was shoving books into his locker when Tony fucking Stark of all people showed up, again, and just had to make his presence known.

“Hey Stephen.” Tony grinned, closing Stephen’s locker as soon as he was done putting books in. “I hear from nowhere in particular that you don’t have a date to homecoming yet.”

“Oh I wonder where you heard that.” Stephen rolled his eyes and the venom practically dripped from his words. His friends were dead to him. He’d have to find new ones. Maybe live as a hermit without friends for the rest of his miserable existence.

“Well, I heard it from that cute girl who apparently lives under a rock. She was just heartbroken that you turned her down. Anyway. Will you go to homecoming with me?”

“And why the hell would I want to do that?” Stephen asked, trying to evade Tony by walking in the direction opposite Tony’s next class, nevermind how he knew where Tony’s next class was.

“Well, because you’re hot. I’m hot. We’d be a really hot couple, and I’m super easy so if you’re just in it for sex, I’m your guy. So, what do you say? Homecoming?”

Stephen stopped, looked at Tony, and then continued walking again, shaking his head.

“Do you really think I’m in it just for sex?”

“I don’t know, it’s what like,” Tony takes a second and Stephen’s pretty sure he’s doing actual math when he finally says, “sixty two percent of people are in for. Statistically, it’s probable.”

“But you can’t apply statistics like that in this situation.”

“Sure I can. I didn’t say what you would do, just what you’d probably do, and either way I’m good. So don’t make me ask again, I hate to come off as needy.” Tony grinned and then pulled a red rose out from his backpack. “Can a guy get an answer, Stephen?”

Stephen looked at the rose and then at Tony.

“Have you been carrying that around all day?”

“I swiped it off Vice Principal Hill’s desk. She had twelve, she’ll never notice one missing.”

Stephen rolled his eyes and then looked back at the flower. “I’m saying yes but you can keep your pilfered flower. I’m not taking the fall for your crimes.”

“Awesome!” Tony grinned tossing the flower over his shoulder and taking a step closer to Stephen. “So, can I pick you up at seven?”

“Seven thirty, if you’re as insufferable on a date as you are right now I’d like to spend less time with you, not more.”

Tony studied Stephen’s face and licked his lips then nodded. “It’s a deal. Seven thirty.” Tony started to leave, riding the high of a mission complete.

“And don’t wear something obnoxious!” Stephen calls after him, and Tony just smiles over his shoulder.

Tony shows up in a gold tux and a bright red undershirt. Stephen refuses to be seen with him in public. Tony cackles and then suggests they spend the night in. Stephen says yes.

They show up to school together the next Monday, and Tony gives Stephen a kiss on the cheek before heading to class.

Jane squeals.

Summary: A lone mansion sat on the cliff overlooking the sea. Locals told stories of the sea monster that called the mansion it’s home, and affected all around it, including the abandoned beach. It could be summoned, they said, by a single person sitting on the beach at night, as someone said a prayer to the cracked mirror in the hallway of the mansion. When Roman hears of these rumours, he wants to explore the house, and summon the monster from the depths. Unluckily for Virgil, he’s the one chosen to sit on the beach and wait for the monster to appear. And when it seems to take a liking to him, Virgil learns that the sea is a treacherous place. Chapter Summary: Roman and Logan know something is wrong with Virgil, and through clever means, Logan deciphers a hidden message from their friend, despite his strange personality change. However, there are forces neither of them understand working against them, and Virgil once again finds himself facing a choice. Patton watched nervously as Logan and Roman discussed between them what could have caused Virgil to change so drastically.

“Logically, something could have happened that is making it difficult for Virgil to open up.” Logan murmured as Roman ran a hand through his hair, frustrated that they didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. “We all know he can have difficulty expressing himself if something happens.”

“Even when something has happened he’s never been like this before!” Roman exclaimed, “He doesn’t avoid us all the time, spend all his time at the beach and offer the silent treatment not only to us but everyone else as well. It’s just…logically speaking, it doesn’t make sense.”

“I agree with you Roman.” Logan sighed, “But I’m just trying to make sense of it all.”

Biting his lip, Patton forced himself to stay silent. He had made a promise to Virgil and he couldn’t just break it now, even if it was the most difficult thing he had ever done. And yet, he really needed to speak to Virgil, but he didn’t think he’d be able to excuse himself without it looking odd.

“Do you have any thoughts on Virgil?” Roman asked, banging his hand on the table to get Patton’s attention since his friend was so lost in his own world, and Patton jumped.

“Oh I…I feel we should talk to him?” Patton suggested, “I mean…if we can find out what is happening we might be able to help him?”

“A sound idea Patton.” Logan nodded in agreement as Roman breathed a heavy sigh. He had tried talking to Virgil and the boy had simply ignored him. Maybe he had been too forward? Patton was always good at talking to Virgil, and making him open up, but there was something odd about how Patton was acting as well and Roman was suspicious, so he turned to Logan.

“Will you talk to him, Lo?” He asked.

Blinking in surprise, Logan nodded, “Yes I can talk to him. Virgil has already responded favourably to me during times of excessive stress in the past.”

“Well, he listens to me as well.” Patton put in, “Maybe I should take to him first kiddos.”

“I don’t think a soft touch will help right now.” Roman disagreed, “But if Logan fails, you can have your go Patton.”

Swallowing his argument, Patton simply nodded once to give his agreement. If he pushed any further, than Roman would know that there was something between him and Virgil, and that Patton knew more than he was letting on. Would Logan be able to get the information from Virgil? Until Logan had spoken to their friend, Patton would have to hold off, but when Logan and Roman began to talk again about all the odd things they wanted to talk to Virgil about, Patton texted him quickly.

Heads up kiddo, Logan is going to come and question you about your odd behaviour. I hope you’re okay!

No reply came through before Logan excused himself to go to Virgil’s home and speak to their friend.

Virgil was dripping wet when he opened the door to Logan, and he had a rather blank stare as he stepped aside and let his friend in. There was an odd smell in the house, and as Logan followed Virgil through the house and into the kitchen, he found out exactly why. Sitting on the kitchen table was a plate of raw fish. Frowning and wrinkling his nose, Logan tilted his head to the side as he examined the plate. It wasn’t just the flesh of the fish on the plate, but a full fish from the monger, with the scales picked away and bite marks taken out of it. With Virgil being the only one in the house, it was easy to tell who had been eating the fish and it made Logan feel a little bit sick.

And why was Virgil soaking wet and fully clothed? It wasn’t raining…so he must have either been sat in the shower or in the bath itself, which was odd.

They really should have done this intervention earlier.

“How are you feeling Virgil?” Logan asked, taking a seat at the table and trying to swallow his disgust, “Patton and Roman are worried about you.”

Silently, Virgil stared at Logan, sitting opposite his friend and beginning to pick at the fish again with his hands, ripping pieces of flesh off and chewing them slowly, keeping his eyes on his friend and Logan shuddered. This was not something he had wanted to see, but he didn’t allow it to put him off.

Virgil didn’t like fish.

“We’re supposed to be picking partners for the final chemistry project soon.” He said, deciding to take a different route and Virgil blinked and paused eating. “It’s a shame we’re not in the same class this year.”

“I…yes.” Virgil nodded, “It is.”

Good, he’s speaking. So, don’t ask him if he’s okay and he’ll respond as normal. And if I try hard enough, I can find out some information, Logan thought, already beginning to form a full hypothesis on what was wrong with Virgil.

“Have you got any idea what you’re going to do?” Logan inquired, “You’re normally well prepared.”

Virgil shrugged, and the movement seemed stiff and painful, which Logan noted as well. “Does it matter?”

“Of course.” Logan frowned, “The mark in this chemistry exam is half the final grade. I feel you should be a little more concerned.”

“I don’t know Logan, I’m just not feeling it right now.” Virgil murmured, “Can you help me?”

Logan didn’t miss how Virgil’s eyes seemed to glow red and blue before settling back to their normal, deep brown and his concern only grew. It didn’t sound as if Virgil was actually asking for help, and yet there was a significant plea for help hidden in Virgil’s calm words. He was panicking, freaked out by his own actions, and yet there was something stopping him from being able to sink into an actual panic attack and Logan didn’t like it.

“I can help you find a good project to work on.” Logan agreed, “How about we go up to find your chemistry text books?”

Nodding, Virgil stood silently and walked upstairs, leading Logan into his room and rummaging around a bookshelf until he withdrew a simple textbook and handed it to Logan with the Periodic Table open on it. Without a word, Logan took the book and waited for Virgil to settle himself.

“We can do some basic revision first if you want?” He suggested, guessing that was why Virgil had handed him this book specifically, and Virgil nodded. Thinking quickly, Logan devised a method within seconds of how he could potentially get a message from Virgil through their revision. Taking out a book and pen, he gave a small smile, and nodded at the Periodic Table. “Name me as many elements as you can remember to start.”

“Helium, Sulfur, Indium, Silicon, Dysprosium, Einsteinium,” Virgil began, and Logan scribbled them down quickly, highlighting certain parts of the words as a message began to slowly spell themselves out.

He’s Inside.

“Hydrogen, Europium, Strontium, Cobalt, Nitrogen, Thallium, Radon, Oxygen, Lutetium, Lithium, Nitrogen, Gold, Mercury.”

He’s controlling me.

“Holmium, Erbium, Lanthanum, Phosphorus, Meitnerium.”

Help Me.

“You’re jumping all over the place.” Logan murmured, his heart hammering as he read over the words again and again. So many more questions were brought up by this revelation. Who was he? And how was he both inside Virgil, and controlling him? Glancing up at his friend, Logan found Virgil staring at him intently, and as he made to write something else down, to see if he could ask certain questions through writing, Virgil’s hand shot out and grabbed his wrist.

“No one can list the periodic table in order.” He stated firmly, “Thank you for coming over Logan, but I think I can choose a project myself.”

Logan found himself unable to speak, only stand when Virgil pulled him to his feet. As he went for his notebook, Virgil snatched it before he could, and Logan couldn’t argue. He had a lot of notes written in there that he needed, but as Virgil began to direct him down the stairs and out of the house, he couldn’t reiterate that.

“I’ll see you in school.” Virgil murmured, and the door shut in Logan’s face. As soon as Virgil was out of his view, Logan blinked in confusion. Why was he here? Why was he talking to Virgil again? And why did his bag feel a little lighter than before. Shrugging and deciding to head home, Logan didn’t look bad.

Had he, he would have seen Virgil standing at the window watching his progress, the page containing his plea for help held in his hands. In one single move, he ripped the page in half, pulled his jacket on, and left the house himself, heading for the beach.

“Did you speak to him?” Roman demanded as he slid into a seat beside Logan in the library the following morning.

“Who?”

“Virgil!” Roman hissed, ducking his head when the librarian shot an angered look at him, “You went to speak to him yesterday and we just didn’t hear anything else from you! What happened?”

“He wouldn’t talk.” Logan replied calmly, “I think we should just give him some space, something may have happened that he doesn’t want to talk about. Space might help him.”

Groaning, Roman let his head drop down onto the desk, and he was still there when Patton arrived.

“What’s wrong kiddo?” He asked softly, taking a seat himself even as he bounced one leg trying to keep himself from chasing down Virgil, who had entered the school building just before him and ignored any attempts Patton had made to talk to him.

“Logan’s attempts to talk to Virgil failed.” Roman muttered into his arms.

Rolling his eyes, Logan adjusted his tie and shook his head, “If Virgil does not want to talk, then we cannot make him talk. Do not be dramatic Roman.”

“There’s something terribly wrong with our friend and you’re telling me not to be dramatic?!” Roman exclaimed, and the librarian shot them a dirty look again. Patton returned with an apologetic look, and dragged Roman and Logan to a more secluded corner of the library by their arms. “We have to do something.”

“There isn’t much we can while we’re stuck in school.” Logan muttered, “Just leave him be.” Pulling his arm out of Patton’s grasp, he slung his bag over his shoulder and stalked from the library, leaving an extremely frustrated Roman and worried Patton alone.

“Now there’s something wrong with him.” Roman snapped, “Patton what is happening?!”

I should tell him, Patton thought softly, he might be able to help. And yet he still couldn’t bring himself to form the words and tell Roman what was going on. Was this to do with the sea monster? He really wanted to figure it out himself before he broke his promise to Virgil.

“Just…keep your eye on him today Roman.” He whispered instead, “It’s Friday, and you’ve got your art trip today to the beach. When we’re out of school this weekend, we can work on a plan.”

Roman did not look happy, but he nodded and grabbed his own bag. Patton watched him go, his stomach twisting painfully.

Virgil seemed happy for Roman to sit next to him during their journey to the beach, but he still remained silent, staring musingly out of the window and tapping his fingers against the glass. It was extremely hard for Roman to bite his tongue, but he did, drumming his own fingers against his legs and humming to himself. Music always helped keep him calm. As the class filed off the bus and towards the entrance to the beach, shivering at the rather chill wind blowing at the top of the cliffs, Virgil approached the teacher, with Roman quick behind him.

“I want to sketch from the cliff’s first, miss.” Virgil stated. “Please.”

“I don’t see a problem with that.” Their teacher agreed and Roman swallowed nervously, “As long as you come down onto the beach soon Virgil. Roman, please stay with him, as long as you’re together, I’m happy.”

“Sure thing.” Roman agreed.

Why did this feel like a bad idea?

When they were alone, Virgil walked towards the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea, dropping his bag onto the ground and looking over the choppy waters. It was a violent sea, and Roman was extremely cautious about getting close to the edge, but Virgil didn’t seem to have the same apprehension. As his toes went over the edge of the cliff, and he raised his arms as if to dive, Roman’s stomach dropped and he rushed forward to grab his friend and pull him away from the edge. This was insane! How could Logan say it was okay for them to leave Virgil alone?!

“Stop!” Roman screamed, “Virgil please!”

His hands wrapped around the edge of Virgil’s arms, and he yanked him away from the edge, but as soon as he did, Virgil’s calm demeanour dropped and he began to struggle.

“Let me go!” He cried, “Let me go!”

The two wrestled on the edge of the cliff for only a moment before Roman’s foot slipped and he went flying over the edge. As he went careening towards the sea, his eyes met Virgil’s, and he saw for an instant that his friend looked extremely panicked. It was an expression that he had seen a lot of times before, and despite the situation, it was comforting to see Virgil really coming back into his own. Closing his eyes, Roman accepted this was probably it.

As Virgil watched Roman plummet of the edge of the cliff, something inside him snapped, and the control placed on him from Dark disappeared.

“Roman!” He screamed.

He didn’t think twice, didn’t allow the panic to set in, before he ran towards the cliff himself and launched himself off. Roman was free-falling quickly, having manoeuvred himself into a position where he would hit the water without it feeling like concrete, and now falling with his eyes closed. Virgil stretched for him, trying to grab his friend, bring them together, anything to mean he wouldn’t fall alone. As the waves rushed up to meet them, Virgil felt tentacles wrap around his entire body and snatch him into the water gently. Roman disappeared from view with a loud smash.

“You’re getting bolder.” Dark’s voice reached his ears as Virgil wrenched himself free of Dark’s hold and tried to swim in the direction of Roman’s fall.

“Fucking let me go you ass!” Virgil snapped, “I need to…Roman has…my friend!”

Here came the panic.

Huh. After a week of not feeling anything while Dark took residence inside him, panic was an odd thing to feel, but it was comforting as well. The sea monster did not seem impressed that Virgil had somehow come free of his control, but he merely watched the human struggle against the current to try and find Roman. He had to. His friend needed him. The entire week, Roman, Logan and Patton had been worried about him, and he had allowed Dark to just have complete control.

He could still taste the fish.

Disgusted, Virgil yanked himself away when Dark tried to wrap his tentacles around him again. Roman was his priority. And Dark, Dark was impressed the thrall was gone.

How nice.

He would have to turn up the control when this entire ridiculous scenario was over.

“Where is he?!” Virgil cried, casting his gaze around the darkened sea and not finding Roman around at all, “This is all my fault…I should never…w-why did I let you…fuck! Dark can you sense him? My friend!”

Shaking the confusion at the failing of his thrall out of his head, Dark hummed, “You called him Roman? He’s here, but he’s been taken, in a similar way to you.”

“What?!” Virgil demanded, “NO! By who?”

Cracking his neck, Dark drew Virgil against him and Virgil didn’t fight this time, too thrown by the fact that someone had decided to take Roman. Who else was in the ocean? Another monster like Dark? Would Roman be okay? Dark used his tentacles to tilt Virgil’s head up and he placed a gentle kiss to his temples.

“Did I not tell you once?” He murmured, “If you dive here during the day, you’re destined to meet someone else other than me. No one would dare touch you, not after you gave yourself to me, but any other humans are fair game.”

“Do you know where he is?” Virgil asked, “Please!”

“I know where he is.” Dark nodded, “But if I take you there, you’re going to meet some nasty people. Prepare yourself.”

“I don’t care!” Virgil snapped, “Just take me to him.”

With a snap of his fingers, Dark transported them from the choppy seas near the cliff to an underground cave. Ahead of them was another monster, and his body was curled around Roman. Virgil took a sharp breath. His friend was unconscious, head lolling backwards onto the monster’s shoulder but he didn’t seem to be injured, except for the snake body wrapped around him. The monster itself was somewhat disturbing as well. A sea snake tail, yellow in colour, and human above the waist the same way Dark was, with slightly yellowed skin. The scales of his tail spread to the left side of his face, and while on the right side his eye was normal, the left side was yellow with a slit pupil. Dark brown hair and a sneer on his face, this monster was something else and Virgil disliked him immediately.

“Deceit.” Dark purred, “Why am I not surprised that it’s you?”

“Oh you always say that.” Deceit smirked, “You brought your human with you? How sweet.”

“Yes, he wanted to come and find his friend.” Dark shrugged, “That one.” He gestured to Roman, held in Deceit’s grip tightly, and Virgil sucked in another breath. He was going to drop into a panic attack soon, if he didn’t get Roman free. He couldn’t allow his friend to get into this mess as well. Roman had a future, he had so much waiting for him, and being tied to a monster…no. This wasn’t going to do.

“Let him go!” He ordered, “Now.”

Deceit’s eyes flicked to him and Virgil shuddered, but tried to keep his cool. “Who are you to order me around?”

“He’s got me on his side.” Dark murmured, “And you know listening to me is good for you.”

“Sometimes.” Deceit said, “But not all the time. You’re not one to do things without a little bargain, and I’m feeling ready for a fight today. Besides, why should you be the only one with a human. I want one too.”

“We’re not pets!” Virgil protested, “You can’t have him.”

“Does he belong to you?” Deceit asked, tilting his head to the side and Virgil blushed.

“Virgil belongs to me, and no one belongs to him.” Dark supplied instead, “But if he doesn’t want you to own his friend, I will stop you.”

Turning to Dark, Virgil offered a tentative smile, “You will?”

Nodding, Dark pressed another kiss to Virgil’s temple, “Of course. But on one condition.”

Trepidation began to grow in Virgil’s stomach, but he swallowed it and nodded himself. Dark gave a sinister smile and wrapped himself entirely around Virgil, pinning him directly against his chest, lips hovering just over Virgil’s own.

“You let me in, but living on land as you are, I cannot have you as I want you.” He whispered, “If you give yourself to me fully, agree to come to me in the sea, and live there forever with me, then I will save your friend.”

“W-what?”

That was…how could he even agree to that? Leaving his world, friend and family behind and move to the sea permanently? Dark was already turning him into a monster now that Virgil had let him in, and it was only a matter of time before he couldn’t bare to be on land himself anymore. And yet…Virgil didn’t want to give up his life. Living under the sea was beautiful, and Dark’s words inviting, but he was scared. How could he go along with this, even with Roman’s life at stake. If he didn’t agree to this, Roman would die. And Virgil would be claimed by Dark eventually anyway. Why prolong the inevitable, and live with the guilt of killing his friend too?

Dark’s lips brushed his own and Virgil started violently, shoving the sea monster back.

“I want to set some terms of my own!” He stated, voice low.

Raising an eyebrow, Dark nodded for him to continue.

“You give me time on the surface, with my friends and family. Free of your control.” Virgil said, his heart hammering against his chest as Dark watched him with an unreadable expression, “I’m allowed to spend my last days on land doing as I please, with my friends, and then when that time is up, I will come to you. You will not interfere.”

“I can agree to that I suppose.” Dark confirmed, “Those are rather weak terms-.”

“I’m not finished.” Virgil interupted. “You have to make sure that he never goes after Roman, or any of my friends again, when I join you. That they will be safe.”

“I can do that too.”

“Good. Then I…I will accept.” Virgil had barely breathed out the words before Dark yanked him back in and crushed their lips together. It was always an odd sensation, kissing the monster like this, but somewhere in the back of his mind, Virgil enjoyed it.

Or rather, Dark made him enjoy it.

Pulling back, Dark tenderly wiped the tears forming at the sides of Virgil’s eyes with his thumbs and cradled his face. “Two weeks. I will give you two weeks. Now, be a good boy and wait for me.”

With that said, Dark clicked his fingers again. Before Virgil could even take another breath, he slammed hard into the grass of the cliffside, soaking wet and shivering and tasting Dark on his lips. Roman fell next to him almost immediately, shaking and still unconscious but alive and breathing. Creeping to the edge of the cliff, Virgil tried to see below the waves, to the fight going on between the two sea monsters, but all he was greeted with was the unforgiving surf that was soon to be his home.

Dark could see him, through the waves, and he ran a hand through his dark hair as Deceit slithered around him, looking disappointed, but impressed.

“That worked easier than you thought it would.” The snake said, “Impressive how foolish humans can be.”

“And funny for you to say that, Deceit.” Dark huffed, “Your assistance in taking the friend is appreciated.”

“Must you call me that name?” Deceit asked, “I much prefer-.”

“You gave up the rights to your human name when you agreed to come below the surf with me, Thomas.” Dark growled, grabbing Deceit as he tried to swim away and pinning him in place, “Don’t forget who gave you these powers, this form, and the freedom you wanted, and who could take it away just as easily.”

The look Deceit gave Dark as the monster released him was scathing, and with a flick of his tail he was gone, swallowed up by the darkening waters. Dark stayed for a moment longer until Virgil was no longer looking down over the cliff. He would have his human soon, and when Virgil had changed in a few decades to become like him, the hunt would begin again.

Roman woke to a very disorientating world and rolled over onto his back with a weak groan. The last thing he remembered was Virgil about to dive off the edge of the cliff, and Roman going over the edge trying to stop him. After that, it was black. Gentle hands gripped his shoulders as he tried to sit up and Roman hissed in pain, but cracked his eyes open and found Virgil’s face swimming above him.

“You’re awake!” Virgil exclaimed, and it was the most he had sounded like himself for a week.

“Yes. And you seem to be as well.” Roman pointed out, pushing Virgil’s hands off him and struggling into a sitting position. “How are we back up here? What the fuck is going on Virgil?!”

His friend looked sheepish, but determined, and it was with steely eyes that he stared at Roman. “I owe you an explanation. You, Logan and Patton. And after school, I’ll give it, I promise. It’s a tall tale.”

“What about?” Roman pressed.

With a weak laugh, Virgil rubbed at his eyes as he began to cry. “Sea monsters.”

summer start flash fics; wc: 2024; royalty!au

The day Minghao arrives at court, you hear word of him before you even see him. Rumors, mostly fascinated with how someone of unclear origins had become such a talented artist. One of your fellow ladies-in-waiting claims that he was a fisherman’s son who learned the art of poetry from sirens out at sea.

That version of events makes the lot of the Princess laugh. “That’s lofty tutelage to claim for someone whose work we haven’t even heard yet,” she remarks.

“But it does make you want to give him an audience, doesn’t it?”

She nods, and promises that you’ll all get a chance to see.

Rumors could not have prepared you for actually seeing Minghao perform. There is an effortlessness and grace in the very way he moves; like he’s been here a thousand times before. If you hadn’t heard so many tales of his humble origins, you would have thought he belonged in palaces, that he’d grown up surrounded by at least the same luxuries as you.

And that’s before he even performs.

Minghao is invited to stay at court. You do your best to hide your delight.

“It’s supposed to be the other way around, isn’t it?”

Those are the first word Minghao speaks directly to you. He knows who you are by now. You are a constant by the Princess’ side, particularly so on the evenings he performs. But circumstances have never aligned just right for him to do more than greet you honorably and in passing. Until now, when he’s found you by chance in one of gardens.

“I’m not sure what you mean,” you answer him, doing your very best to keep your gaze diverted to the colorful petals of flowers in front of you.

“The poet is meant to be the one admiring the noblewoman, by my understanding.”

The implication sends a jolt down your spine, has you straightening your shoulders and stiffening your neck as your gaze snaps to him. You nearly gasp aloud. Minghao has a placid smile on his lips, as if he’d done nothing more than remark on the weather. The only indication that he knows exactly what he’s said is in the faint glimmer of curiosity and playfulness in his gaze upon you.

“You don’t play much at cards, do you?” He asks, lips quirking up just a fraction more than they ought to, all statuses considered.

You bring your lips into a stern line and let your eye flicker with intentional indiscretion over his lanky frame. “Have you heard of a false tell?” you retort without hurry. You remind yourself that he is not the one with a royal’s ear; that isn’t heir to any known fortune.

He laughs, and you find yourself forgetting why you needed such reminders in the first place.

“Between a bluff and a false tell, who do you suppose would fold first?” Minghao glances towards the palace briefly before returning his sights to you. Somehow it is more intense than it had been only an instant before.

“There comes a time when you have to show your hand, you know,” you reply, falling more into ease with the conversation now that it’s a few steps removed from his opening accusation.

Minghao feigns a look of surprise. “Does there?”

“I’m afraid you’re the one who sounds inexperienced at cards now.” You smile at him, and it seems to have a mirroring effect on him; his own lips curling into a slight grin.

He bends forward slightly at the waist, decreasing the space between the two of you by only a few inches. It is enough to remind you just how charmed you have been by his appearance since the first day he arrived.

“Or perhaps I’m very good at making my opponents fold,” he suggests as an alternative. There’s a tinge of challenge in his tone that makes your heart begin to beat a little faster. He takes a step back, a self-satisfied look upon his face. “Please, send my regards to your Lady. I’ve composed something new in her honor.” With those words, he suddenly sounds like nothing more than the image of propriety, and dips his head in respect to you before taking his leave.

That evening, he does indeed perform a new lyric poem. It tells of distant, chaste ardour; of noble love for a beauty yet unmatched in the narrator’s eyes. Intrigue. Readiness to devote.

Throughout, everyone in attendance has their eyes either upon the poet or the princess. Minghao had, after all, been quite clear in his introduction that this composition wouldn’t have been possible with her.

Except his gaze is fixed on you through every stanza.

“I thought you never showed your hand?” You find Minghao in the hallway just outside the drawing room shortly after you see him exit. He almost seems to have been waiting for you, given that he’s only half-way down the empty passage.

“Only returning the courtesy,” he replies without missing a beat.

You ought to be seeking some way to refute that; to insist once more that your shock earlier that day hadn’t in fact been a wordless confirmation of your admiration. Yet you find yourself continuing steady strides down the stonework until you are only a few step away from Minghao.

“Did you choose to be so obvious with your gaze?” you question, dropping your volume to a hush.

“I could hardly have been so obvious in my words.” A flutter runs through you at this confirmation that his poem was truly dedicated to you. “I can be more discreet, if it’s what you’d wish.”

“What am I to know, then, if you’re discreet in both your words and action?”

Minghao smiles again, something akin to mischief mixing into his gaze. “That it is impossible to write of anyone else in a court where you are.”

You try not to grin. You tell him that will suffice.

It does, for quite some time. You share private, coy conversations with him whenever the opportunity arises. And every time he presents a new poem come evening, there is never any sign even the most prying, astute eyes could find for proof that they are directed at you.

There’s no wrong in the way you engage with him, you tell yourself. Save for the technicality that it would be more proper if the artist were as genuinely enthralled by the Princess as he performs. There is no foul in sharing wits with Minghao, no harm in being receptive to his verses.

But then the night comes when you return to your bedchamber to find an envelope had been slipped under the door. It bears your name on the outside and no wax seal. Inside was a single piece of paper. On it were carefully written lines of a poem that grips you from the first line.

And brings a flush to your face and a heat to your chest.

The first stanza details a knight waiting in a pasture for a shepherdess; growing ever impatient with every birdsong and passing cloud overhead. Every sound that is not his lover’s voice a torture upon his soul.

The second tells of the mixed sensation of relief and boiling over when the shepherdess appears at last. The time between seeing and touching somehow agonizingly longer than the knight’s entire wait for nightfall.

And the third.

You think you’ll have to burn this paper for the last stanza alone.

It details everything that happens after the knight takes her hand and the two fall together in the grassy hillside under the cover of dark.

There is some space after the final line. Then, towards the bottom of the page, written at an angle rather than in a straight line: Forgive my indiscretion xx

You could choose outrage; could probably have him ousted from court if you made enough of a fuss of it. You could choose to scorn him privately for it; burn the letter and refuse to meet his gaze and stop finding places to share quiet talks with him.

What you do choose is this: you tuck the poem between pages of your own journal. You carry on your conversations, public and private, with him as if nothing had changed at all.

At least until he caves first and asks if you’ve received any letters as of late during one of your afternoon walks with him. You dare to let your fingers find his, brushing lightly over his.

“I have,” you reply, “I only wish it hadn’t been from an anonymous admirer.”

Your hand starts to fall away from his, but Minghao grabs it back. He clutches at your fingertips and looks at you imploringly. He whispers out only the first two lines of the poem before bringing your hand up to brush his lips delicately against the knuckles.

“Remarkable. That’s exactly what my anonymous admirer had written,” you tease in a half-murmur.

Minghao lifts his eyes to yours without letting go of your hand. “My lady, you make me want things I can’t have,” he says; it’s a gentle warning, if not a plea for some abstract mercy you might be able to bestow upon him.

“Minghao,” you call him by name directly, a rarity that usually sets a small grin upon his features. But today, his expression remains the same. “What was your shepherdess allowed to have…?” Certainly not a knight; certainly not what Minghao wrote as occurring on a hill at night. “And what does she have…?”

It is not dark, but there is the cover of well-kept trees and low-hanging branches.

Not that kissing Minghao feels like something that needs hiding. At least not in the moment. When his mouth presses to yours, it feels like a great weight has lifted off your chest – like this kiss is the only thing you could need to subsist, as if Minghao could keep you encircled in his arms from then on until eternity.

You forget, even, that there was in fact another letter you received recently.

Or you tell yourself that you forget it. The truth is you almost always remember it somewhere in the afterglow of any of Minghao’s kisses. They grow in frequency over the days that follow. So much so you almost begin to fear someone will catch on.

A near fear is evidently not enough to keep you out of Minghao’s bed.

Minghao finds out himself, inevitably, the evening a feast is thrown to welcome home the prince and his retinue from their trip abroad. If he hadn’t been suspicious from the way one of Jeonghan’s knights had spent nearly all afternoon walking with you in the garden, the Princess’ speak at the feasts’ opening left no room for question.

She’s grinning when she mentions her delight that fate has brought not only her brother home, but also the betrothed of one her dearest companions. Her gaze turns to you, and you smile up at her in return. You spare a glance towards Soonyoung, who raises his cup with a grin upon catching your gaze, and then you look down at your lap.

Because there are eyes upon you now. Which means you can’t afford to seek out Minghao to check upon his reaction.

He catches you in a hallway later that night. The boisterous event is still in full-swing in the grand hall. Minghao’s breath smells heavily of wine as he speaks, desperate and angry, “I never stood a chance, did I?”

You stutter out a few senseless syllables. The engagement predates his arrival, you want to say. You should have drawn a line with him far earlier, you know you ought to admit. Soonyoung is good and kind and comes from a good name, you mostly want tell yourself.

“You couldn’t have really thought you could marry me one day,” is what manages to leave your lips through the haze inside your head.

His expression contradicts your assertion.

Minghao leaves court in the dead of night before the week is up.

In the morning, there is an envelope with your name written on it and no wax seal under your door.

Hi! Sorry if this comes across as completely random but I was deep in your writing tag and I saw the Always Faerie AU. I just had to say that I’m incredibly intrigued by it and I was wondering if you had any more headcanons about it that you could share? Or if you aren’t planning on writing it in the future, could you summarize what you had intended to happen in it? Thanks! Love your content!

I already put down some headcanons here, so if you haven’t read those, that’s a good starting place. I actually do have a pretty good sense of where the plot would go, in a broad sense. But rather than give you all bullet points, I’ll try a short fic to start it out and then summarize the general plot from there.

There was no question about it. Helen was gone, and Mark knew three things.

One: He could not tell his mother. She wouldn’t survive another dose of heartbreak.

Two: The Seelie would not help him find her. She was a bother to them, just as much as he was. The Seelie Queen was interested in them, but that interest manifested as little more than occasional indulgence or demand. Nene loved them, in her own way, but she was sworn to the court with faerie vows. She would not disobey.

Three: The world was not kind to people like them. Every moment that passed decreased the chances he’d find Helen alive. The Circle could have her, or the Unseelie, or Lilith herself for all he knew.

Action was needed. Quickly.

“She might be somewhere we haven’t checked yet,” Cristina suggested, as if they hadn’t searched every nook and cranny of the Seelie’s underground abode, and even most of the forest above. “Or maybe she got lost.”

Miach shook his head. “No. No. If she went out she would have left a note- she always leaves a note.”

“Then mayhaps the note was lost,” Kieran said, trying to be soothing and failing. He looked almost as spooked as Mark.

A dull dread filled the pit of Miach’s stomach. “I want to check her room again,” he whispered.

Helen’s room was next to his, two little alcoves off their mother’s sick room that had served them since they were children. But as the lady Nerissa had grown sicker and sicker, Helen had taken over more and more of her old spaces. Her library, her sitting room, both were Helen’s now. Mark had been left only a pantry of herbs, but hadn’t minded much. He’d always preferred exploring to sitting home, stewing in grief.

The box was in the library, hidden behind two scrolls in ancient greek. It took them an hour of searching to find it, another hour his sister could be in peril. By the time Kieran came down with the flat, abalone box, Mark felt bloodless.

“Do you want me to open it?” Cristina asked, because Cristina was kind in a way only people raised out of the courts could be.

“No,” Miach said. Heart aching, he opened the box.

Inside were letters, dozens of them, some on crisp white paper and some on fancy stationary with blue flowers printed on them. All of them looked terribly human, right down to the bubbly handwriting.

Mark felt himself relax. She’d run away with a human then. That was almost safe, almost normal. He could find her, he could bring her home.

(How she’d met her beau was a mystery of its own- neither of Nerissa’s children had ever been allowed outside of Faerie, but there would be time to interrogate her on that later.)

Kieran gasped. “The name,” he whispered, “Miach, read the name.”

At the bottom, in the same girlish handwriting it said:

…It seems now that the world has turned to gold. Even so, all it reminds me of is your hair and your lips

Aline. He had heard that name before.

Kieran hastened to explain. “There was a delegation of Shadowhunters, a year ago.” Long before they had known each other. “They came to the Unseelie Court and said they were visiting the Seelie Queen as well. There was a girl with them by the name of Aline. Aline Penhallow.”Mark’s heart stopped.

He remembered the shadowhunters as well. There had been about five of them, all dressed in black. Nene had tried to keep Alessa and Miach as far away from them as possible but the Seelie Queen had called Helen to court in spite of her protests. Mark, still a child by faerie standards, had remained locked in his room.

Helen had come home looking a bit flushed and harried, but she’d insisted it had all been fine, that the Shadowhunters hadn’t wanted anything to do with her and Mark.

He’d always known his sister could lie, but she’d never lied to him before.

How long had she and this Shadowhunter girl been communicating? How had they planned to stay in touch? How many months had Aline Penhallow planned to lure his sweet, gentle sister into a trap?

Cristina was the one who spoke first. Lightly, she placed a hand on Miach’s shoulder and said, “We should go, now. If we’re going to rescue Helen we’ll need to leave at night, which means we should have been packing ages ago.”

It took a moment for him to realize what she meant, and almost instantly his mind turned to suspicion. “You can’t leave. You’re sworn to the Seelie Queen.”

“Family is more important than oaths,” Cristina declared. “And this is family. Besides, I’m probably human, I’m not expected to behave like a civilized faerie.” That was true, there was more leeway for those with naturally twisted minds, who couldn’t be held to their promises like proper beings. Young changelings and half-faeries were considered to be charity cases, and there was no one to blame but nature if they broke a few promises. At worst she’d get beaten.

It was still a lot to ask of anyone. Miach tried to smile, so she’d know he appreciated it.

“Kieran,” she said, turning to their lover, who seemed trapped in his own private hell. “Can you cover for us here?”

Slowly, the prince turned to look at them. Then, thoughtfully, he said, “No. I can’t. I’m coming with you.”

Kieran would get worse than beaten if he tried to escape. Hostages weren’t something either court took lightly. Miach grabbed his hands. “You don’t mean that.”

“I do. I’m tired of being a pawn. I can leave the court with the two of you, the magic binding me allows it, and they won’t be able to modify that at a distance. There are no oaths restricting me. One might even argue that I’m obligated to try to escape.”

One might, Mark thought, but few would. It wasn’t a plea that would hold up well in any trial.

Escaping with a prince put them all in more danger. On the other hand, Kieran was more powerful and more skilled at combat than either of them, and if they wanted to rescue Helen they’d need someone who could actually wield a sword.

He turned to Cristina. “It’s your call.” She was the second most likely to suffer the consequences, if they were caught.

Cristina added her hands to theirs, making more of a determined mound than a desperate hold. “We’re better together,” she said.

Neither of them were prepared to argue with her.

Most of the story I have sketched out involves trying to find Helen (and later Aline, since they both got kidnapped together and the Penhallows made them promise to rescue them both). But since the Circle is pretty good at shielding, they have to use some very roundabout methods to try to track them down- first they talk to Aline’s family, then Cristina’s family, then moving onto Kieran’s, then the entire Downworld, and so on.

It’s evolves into sort of a globe trotting semi-heist as they search for ingredients to make the elusive perfect tracking spell that Mark has only heard written about.

Also they have to stay one step ahead of the Seelie knights looking for them.

And it’s a race against time cause who knows what the Circle is planning to do with Helen and Aline. (Spoiler: Helen actually has a pretty good handle on it and is leveraging some of her magical knowledge for protection.)

Jia Penhallow recognizes Cristina but doesn’t tell her. She does tell the Rosales family who are now searching for this faerie raised girl they thought they lost years ago.

Cristina’s faerie family panics when they hear she met Shadowhunters and try to smother Mark in rose petals.

Kieran’s family is proud of him for the first time in his life (Made off with two Seelie courtiers! Atta boy!) but does try to keep them, to gain the upper hand on the Seelie Court. They end up having to fight their way out.

When they barter their way into the siege situation Spiral Labyrinth, Malcolm Fade hears the name Blackthorn and has a panic attack and then Catarina Loss makes everyone hot chocolate.

They have a cute dinner on the Strip while trying to figure out their way into the Shadowworld Market. Then Johnny Rook reveals that Mark’s dad is alive and throws even more drama on the family fire.

Their last stop is the Wild Hunt, because they need an ingredient from Gwyn ap Nudd himself. It’s terrifying and also a learning experience for everyone.

Finally they’re ready to break into Valentine’s HQ, but in the course of traipsing around two worlds to figure out where it is they realized how woefully unprepared they are to fight the Circle. So they last minute find some allies in the families they’ve lost. Andrew Blackthorn just found out he had a daughter an hour ago and he’s ready to call in some favors for her.

Climactic battle. Secrets revealed. Helen and Aline refuse to be parted. So on and so forth. Very standard, heroic story. But during all the camping out in the woods of faerie and finding a hotel room in LA, Mark, Cristina, Kieran are still struggling with their relationship, which started out as a way to pass the time and make friends but is now something much more.

They were all raised by faeries and they’re very good at passion and pretty words, but not super great at navigating complicated emotional pasts, or talking about feelings honestly.

In the end, can they stay together? Will they stay together?

(Of course, duh. I think they end up with the Rosales long term, though Kieran might go to the Wild Hunt and just be a very long distance boyfriend.)

Reprise (1/7)

Some angst for your Monday. This is basically an AU where Gal takes Trespasser a lot worse and screws up the best thing he’s ever had. Don’t worry, they’ll sort it out. Eventually. But it’ll probably involve angst, adventure, crying, sex and too much booze.

I. on the nature of daylight

Surprising how quickly the furore over an attempted Qunari invasion can end; how quickly an Inquisition can become dust in the wind. In the days after Gal wakes up and matter-of-factly disbands the Inquisition, they watch the troops and scouts that used to be theirs drift away. Some of the inner circle have remained, but few.

Even though he looks pale and drained, Gal insists on leaving the Winter Palace as soon as possible. Dorian says something about being traumatised by Orlesian draperies, but it doesn’t even get a laugh; Gal tries for a smile that seems pained, false on his face. Josephine watches him in worry, but Gal just heads off to get changed out of the stiff uniform he had to wear for the Council. He comes back in his old mail and leathers, the left sleeve neatly pinned and a glove shoved into his pocket, with his hair loose. “Josephine, you’re breaking off for Antiva?”

She nods. “There’s a route that will take me to the port…”

Dorian swallows, and tries to see the future - or at least, tries to see one that doesn’t leave him feeling more than a little despairing. He’s managed a week: a week spent by Gal’s bedside and praying for him to wake up, and then spent speaking to him and reassuring him, trying to make him laugh. It’s a shame I can’t use you as a reading light anymore, amatus, but… I’m so glad to have you alive. So very glad. He’s watched Gal retreat inwards, become silent as stone again, something dull and terribly sad settling in those familiar eyes.

He spent last night wrapped around Gal, trying to sleep and failing, wondering why it felt like he was clinging to a man who was slipping away. He remembers Gal’s half-conscious fidgeting: that remaining hand on his arm, touching his face, as if to make sure he was real. Ironic, and unexpected, when he’s been wondering who this distant statue, this caricature of a responsible Inquisitor, has done with the man he loves. Perhaps he wasn’t the only one clinging.

He’s managed a week, and he’s out of excuses. He’s tried everything from Gal’s condition to not being able to secure passage on a ship, but Gal is apparently healed enough to journey and he received a message from the port yesterday. He’s stretched I’m leaving as soon as the Exalted Council is done beyond reason.

He steels himself - chin up, Pavus, there we are - and when Josephine wanders off to begin packing, he takes Gal’s arm.

Something crosses Gal’s face before it’s swiftly hidden away again. Fear, perhaps. Gal moves on instinct, letting himself be led until they’re in a quieter, leaf-shaded courtyard.

When they come to a halt, Dorian tries to smile, and sighs. “I suppose I’d better be going. I’ve received several angry letters, and there’s a ship in port with my name on it.”

Gal looks at him, still with that level resignation that’s been there since the Darvaraad, since Solas. “So this is it, then.” There isn’t a question in Gal’s voice.

“Far from it. There are - Gal?”

That frightening stillness is settling over Gal, as if he’s steeling himself for pain. His eyes are bleak. “I’m sorry. I… I can’t.”

Dorian laughs, but it’s more to cover the rising panic. “You can’t what? Believe me, I know it’s hard to say goodbye, but it’s only - “

Shaking his head, Gal says, “I’m sorry. This, us. I can’t, Dorian.”

Dorian can only stare in disbelief. “Surely you’re not suggesting a little thing like an ocean might come between us?”

Gal swallows, and, most worryingly of all, raises his chin and meets Dorian’s eye. It’s the careful Chantry-trained posture and the bleakness in his eyes. He looks like nothing less than the hollowed-out man Dorian saw those first days in Haven - except so much more tired. Older and smaller, somehow. Gal says, “You’ve seen the way the wind is blowing. The Inquisition’s gone, after this.” When Dorian opens his mouth to protest, Gal adds, “Better than being owned. You’re going to be a magister. The best I can be is… a distraction. Someone to weigh you down. They’ll try and use me against you.”

“Yes, I remember saying the same things to you. And I remember you telling me they were nonsense.”

“They were. You’re…” Gal reaches out. “You’re not the problem.”

For some reason he will never be able to fathom on the nights when he lies and tortures himself with this over and over again, Dorian steps back, out of reach. He laughs once more, and this time it’s a sharp, pointed thing, entirely without humour. “’It’s not you, it’s me’? How original.”

Gal runs an agitated hand through his hair. “It’s the truth. You couldn’t even tell me you were leaving. I thought we were past that - ”

“Lack of time, not lack of inclination. I meant to find you, I had a plan…”

Gal swallows, looks away. “Wish I believed you.”

“So what should I have done, marched up to you and caused you to make that face in front of the Orlesian ambassador?”

“Doesn’t matter now. You’re leaving, and I’m in your way.”

“That’s not true, you have to understand... ”

“I’m sorry. I love you - “

“No.” Dorian hates the way his voice betrays him, trembling. “No, you don’t, or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

“I do. So much.” Gal’s voice is becoming rougher now. This is a realer man than the one who stood in front of the Exalted Council, but the price of seeing him is far too much. “I wish… I wish I could stay with you. Wish I could believe we’d last.”

“What, so I’m to lose everything? My father and my - And you.“ Dorian’s shaking, and he can’t even look at Gal. It will say too much. He thinks, to his horror, that the stinging in his eyes may not be the beginnings of an anger-related headache but tears.

(He should never have stayed. He should never have taken those promises at face value; he should never have believed that he could love an Inquisitor, love anyone. He shouldn’t have believed that anyone would stay, why would they? It’s always the hope that kills. His father should have taught him that well enough.)

“Dorian.” Gal’s voice is still steady, quiet. “I can still be your friend. I’ll do everything I can. I just can’t - “

Dorian steps forwards and demands, “What? Be bothered to try? At least pretend this is worth saving?”

“The others are leaving. The Inquisition’s dissolved. You’ve all got somewhere to go or someone to be, and I… haven’t.”

Dorian exhales a sharp breath of disbelief. “So, what, this is self-pity? You’ve got to leave before you’re left?”

There’s something trapped in Gal’s eyes, something afraid. That hit a nerve. “It’s… Everyone’s got somewhere they need to be, Dorian. This is more important than you and me. Tevinter needs you. You can’t be worrying about me when - ”

“Perhaps things would be bloody easier if we had help! If you didn’t just leave the moment I needed you!”

“Better gone than a lead weight around your neck,” Gal snaps, and it’s the first time he’s raised his voice outside of a battle.

Dorian steps closer, and the volume of his voice was already rising, but now it’s a true shout. “I told you, you were never that! You never will be! Why can’t you just - ”

Gal’s face twists. “Then what? What am I meant to be, when you’re standing in front of a Magisterium that’s waiting to denounce you?”

Dorian opens his mouth, and then he can’t help himself - he crosses the space between them, takes Gal’s face in his hands and rests their foreheads together, feeling Gal freeze. “My beloved,” he says. He presses a brief, shaky kiss to Gal’s lips, unsure if that or the plea in his voice is causing Gal’s surprise. “Please, amatus, don’t do this to me. Please. You promised - “

For brief, wonderful moments Gal returns the kiss, that remaining hand coming up to cup Dorian’s face, to press him closer.

And then Gal makes a sharp, despairing noise, and jerks back, turning his head away. Dorian reaches out, but Gal only shifts back and says, “I’m sorry.”

“No, you don’t get to be sorry, you get to… to tell me this was all just a moment of madness and you’ll write to me, you’ll speak to me, you’ll… anything. Please, anything.” Dorian wonders when he took Gal’s hand. “This is… a firm request, by the way. Don’t make me beg.” He laughs, and it’s weak, a hopeless thing, and that’s when he realises he’s far past slight tears.

“I’ll write to you. Speak to you. But not as… I can’t be.” Gal swallows.

The anger is back again, rising in Dorian’s throat, choking him. He puts space between them again, unable to bear touching Gal while hearing this. “Then you don’t love me. You can’t, or you wouldn’t be doing this.”

Gal’s voice is utterly bleak as he echoes those words - ones from years ago, now. “Sometimes love’s not enough.”

Dorian shuts his eyes, inhales. “Don’t you dare…“

“Would it be easier if I said I didn’t? I’ll say it, if you want me to. I don’t - ”

Scrubbing a hand across his face, Dorian manages, “But it’s not - Fuck. I don’t believe you.”

That careful, awful Chantry-trained blankness is back on Gal’s face. Gal says, slowly, “You know how it is. Any port in a storm.” He looks into Dorian’s eyes and adds, “Storm’s passed, Magister Pavus.”

Dorian stands, white knuckled, and breathes, so he won’t set something on fire. “You bastard.”

Gal nods once, curtly, but won’t look at him.

With that Dorian walks away, trying desperately to control his magic, his face, all of it. He should have expected this; being in the south has made him naive. He looks back, once, and Gal is watching the sky, gazing at the scar where the Breach used to be.

He scrubs a hand over his face, trying to remove some of the evidence of his lapse, and throws the simplest of glamours over himself - something to disguise the red eyes and the smudged kohl; it wouldn’t stand up to a decently skilled mage or templar, but he won’t meet many of those, now the Inquisition is gone. Then he straightens his spine, remembers the expression his father used to adopt before speaking to the Senate - hands trembling on parchment, the muttering that came with desperately trying to memorise a speech, Dorian, someday you will be better than me at this - and takes it for himself. He wears it the rest of the way through the palace, even as the troops stare at him, some of them offering a quiet acknowledgement or a wave and a grin. Yes, he even knows some of their names. Attachment is a terrible thing.

He takes a ship the next day, before he can think too much. It��s easier that way.
