Miraak Combat Headcanons

As a disclaimer - all of these are going to be very canon divergent, and based almost exclusively off of my own logic and interpretation. To get a good baseline of the type of combat I describe here, I recommend watching some of Monty Oum's animations, as he is my biggest inspiration.

Weaponry

Something I personally noticed in my fight with Miraak is that he doesn't use his staff as often as I would expect him to, and instead relies on his magic first, and sword second. I also personally find his staff redundant for the combat style I expected him to have, and have thus removed it altogether. Replaced with a mandatory dodge roll. He can also wuld, of course.

As for his magic, I predominantly see him using lightning magic when I fight him, which I'll go on more about in the personality segment. I would usually say this goes hand in hand with his sword - magnetizing it and wielding it without his hands, electrifying it for more damage - but it doesn't seem to be a mortal metal.

Separation and individuality seem to be a big theme with Miraak, so I'm going to be keeping his magic, and his blade separate from one another.

There's a few ways this can be made interesting, but because I see Miraak as extremely lightweight, I'm effectively going to make it a cooler version of Skyrim's off-hand magic - he uses his blade with his right hand, and grabs, blocks, or punches with his left.

A few of his spells can be used to magnetize others' weaponry, even shields, and either disarm them or launch them back at his opponent, usually too fast for them to recognize what's happening.

Miraak is also extremely lightweight, as I mentioned before. He isn't the most agile, his bones are starting to hurt, but he's still faster and trickier than the average Dragon Priest. Predominantly relies on blocking, dodge rolls, or jumping back in order to avoid damage.

Personality

How someone fights has a big impact on their personality, and vice versa, at least from the way that I write.

I have a headcanon that the personality of a mage will determine what element they excel in - for this case, we'll be using Skyrim's three dominant elements. Fire, ice, and lightning.

Miraak is unreliable and unpredictable in his everyday life. He's not exactly what I would call loyal, either, no matter who it's to. But he's still remarkably smart, curious, and rather strong when it comes down to it.

Lightning magic fits the bill here almost perfectly. He would be well aware of the pros and cons of his element, and with all the time he's spent in Apocrypha, he has a masterful grasp on it. The unpredictability and inherent danger of lightning magic, despite it being amazing all the same, is perfect for Miraak.

As for his blade, it's distinctly damaged. Scratched, unpolished, poorly taken care of, and most likely ancient. The tip is still sharp, but I believe that's only because it isn't a mortal metal - it's a gift from Hermaeus Mora.

I personally feel this represents Miraak's exhaustion with being trapped, hatred of Hermaeus Mora, and, despite appearing otherwise on the surface, lack of care for himself.

Much of Solstheim's plot didn't feel like Miraak trying to take over the world, despite how it was portrayed. It felt very much like an escape mission, someone who was doing everything awful (don't get me wrong, Miraak did some horrible shit to put it lightly) in order to build his power and leave.

(I do firmly believe that Miraak did all these things to build his ego, again, don't get me wrong, and it was a wholly disgusting way to go about things. I still like to peer deeper into his personality, though.)

The only reason that Miraak carries Mora's sword with him now is because it reminds him of how far he's come. He sharpens the blade as an act of self care - he feels rather tied to the blade at this point, and doesn't feel right trying to take care of himself without taking care of something he owns.

Either way. Miraak wielding his blade is an indicator of anger, self-loathing, and exhaustion pre-escape, and of recovery and determination post-escape.

Style (And Examples)

So, how does this all culminate?

Miraak has an abnormal spellsword combat style, with his shouts adding some extra options.

I would personally describe it as rather defensive, but understand that this doesn't mean he's not trying to win. You can be aggressive without being on the offensive.

Much of his style relies on waiting for his opponent to approach, and then demolishing them with a combination of lightning spells, mostly AoE, and using his blade when they come too close. Struggles greatly with any form of ranger for this reason.

Some of his spells can cover a rather large area or offer passive damage - a thunderstorm, runes, cloak spells - and he readily uses this to his advantage. Much of his strategy revolves around making the environment inhospitable both for himself and his foe, relying on his armor and resistances to his own magic in order to minimize recoil.

This usually results in collateral damage, and a very ruined arena after the fight.

His swordsmanship has struggled in Apocrypha, but he's had enough time to practice. Has improper form when fighting, but utilizes his shouts or magic to circumvent this, not to mention that he swings very hard.

Miraak's blade is somewhat heavy, so he tends to get in a flurry of slashes before backing up, and reintroducing himself to the fight.

It’s a good thing you like Ace because he certainly likes you back! He’s fallen head over heels for your kindness and would do anything to be on the receiving end of it.

You’re both lazy sort of people and there’s nothing wrong with that in Ace’s eyes. He loves the fact that when he unexpectedly falls asleep, you’re happy to rest alongside him.

Speaking of, he also loves sleeping with you intentionally. He likes the intimacy and domesticity of drifting off to sleep knowing the person he cares about most is right beside him.

Rinne is someone who is not at all afraid to disagree with someone or stand up to any form of authority. It is actually something he is very well known for, more so than the other members who are in his unit. He is someone who encourages you to speak your mind if there is something that you do not agree with and seeing that you are the same way brings that smug and handsome grin to his face.

Another one with a playful sense of humor! Can he be cruel at times? Indeed he can, but a lot of the time it's more so just some playful banter that he has going on. The both of you will certainly throw some playful humor at one another, trying to one up each other to see who can get who to crack first. it's pretty much a tie between the both of you.

While he may be out there, extroverted as hell, causing some trouble here and there, and sometimes just being a bit of a gremlin, he notices very easily when you begin overthinking. While it may not show on your face, he sees it in your eyes as clear as day. This is when we see a more reserved side of him, the part that cares so deeply that he wants to make sure that you are okay. If it is a situation that is causing this or even a person, he is rather quick to interfere and help you any way that he can. Anything to make this less stressful for you.

Please come and see his unit perform! He'll give you his jacket and that way, he can easily see you from the stage. Better yet, he'll get you some front row tickets, right where he will be, and he'll toss you his coat from the stage! Honestly, it's just so big and warm and it smells like him. It's very comfortable.

His unit mates love you, by the way. Crazy B! isn't always as crazy as the name suggests, so they'd love to be able to just chill and hang out. Nikki will even make you all something to eat while you unwind after a long day.

Overall, while Rinne may be an over the top kinda guy, he is someone who will do the same in your relationship, but more so in the sense of making sure that you are happy and have everything it is that you need. This is all new to him, so he really wants to do his best. Just tell him what he needs to do and he will do it.

ARE YOU STARVED FOR CONTENT?

Do you need more content of your favorite character(s)? Are you always going to writers/artists' inboxes and requesting more of it because you feel like there won't ever be enough content?

Here is a guide on how to encourage writers/artists/graphics creators and other content creators to continue their amazing work.

don't just like our posts, reblog it. tumblr doesn't have an algorithm that suggests posts that people liked on others' dashboards. the only way the posts are going to circulate around and actually reach people who want to see it is when you reblog it for your followers to see. that's how we keep this place alive.

comment on our works! tell them how you felt when you saw it/read it. what kind of thoughts did you have? what were you doing? keysmash only? that's amazing, we love that. any words. "i love (character) so much" or "aojfossfiasjo help" or "I really love this work aaaa" or "bitch you're going to make me cry /pos" are all great. bonus points if you tell us in detail about what you liked about our works!!! like "I really like this phrase here..." or "the symbolism you used is really fitting for (character) because..." we don't just put work out there and say "hey this is amazing everyone should read it mwahaha" no we hope that you genuinely enjoy reading it and hope that we make someone's day. sometimes our confidence goes down in our writing and makes us want to stop but when we see such heartwarming comments, it really helps us with our self esteem.

be nice when you request!! don't just say "(character) + (prompt)" and press send. Say Hi! Say thanks! Where are your manners? Please don't act like you're my best friend who I talk to every day at the lunch table and joke around with- because I don't know you. Congratulate us on milestones if we have one going on. Because that goes a long way in making us feel appreciated in our works. We don't like feeling our work is being not appreciated and when the tags are dry it's going to be the fault of those who never supported their content creators.

INTERACT WITH US !! I cannot stress this enough. We are humans too, we want to be treated like humans, not some sort of authoritative figure or some account that puts out content every so often. We are human, we like interactions, we want to be appreciated not only for our works but also for ourselves. It's fine not to be our best friend or whatever, but one of the reasons people leave this site is because nobody talks to them. we are not some sort of business where you present an order and we give our content out and it just continues. we are humans, we are people, and we do this for free, so at least make it a pleasant experience to be on here.

Akutagawa needs encouragement, A LOT. The man has literally Zero confidence and self steam due to abandonment issues (All Dazai's fault tbh) so it would mean a lot and also really helpful if you encourage him over doing stuff. I mean he cares about your opinion a lot cause you and Gin are the most important people to him; so it would definitely make him feel better.

Becoming his s/o takes a lot of effort. Akutagawa has his guard on, and even won't open up to his sister about some stuff; so he needs someone who he can interact with without having to worry about them telling others or thinking lowly of them. It would take you a lot of time to reach that level where he trusts you enough to show his feelings toward you. I mean it will take him a long time to even realize them and accept them... He’s always courteous and mindful when he speaks to you (although sometimes his volume gets a little out of hand when he gets excited). Classics, new releases, symbolism, preferred authors, lessons to be learned, thoughts on recent reads... Sebek always had a spark in his eyes when he talked about the things he loved--and it was that spark that captivated you and drew you closer. He makes it a point to remind you just how thankful he is to have you with him nearly every day, be it by blurting out “I love you” or similar utterances, or physical acts--tight hugs and squeezes on the hand. You never feel unloved with his declarations of adoration always at your ears!
