"The Promise"
The Promise will be the (shitty) temporary title of another story in the making. This will be the retconned version of the story I posted about years ago which involved characters like Kajitsu Akeno and Andrew Larson.
TENTATIVE TEASER OF "THE PROMISE"
The promise centers around the life of a promising student at a prominent college in the United States (NOTE: Still debating if I will use real places or fictional ones) whose life will forever be changed when he encounters the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to intern for one of the most powerful businessmen in the country. This man was the student's idol, despite the fact that the latter was an eccentric business who remained single despite possessing a large business empire.
This opportunity would not only give the student a chance at business; it would also guide him to love. A love, however, it is forbidden for a reason so deep, it is seemingly impossible to resolve despite the student's charm, intelligence, and wit. While a simple student starting out in the business world can't possible fight it, perhaps the country's most powerful businessman can?
TENTATIVE PLOT POINTS OF "THE PROMISE" (names given are temporary and are placeholders while final names haven't been hashed out yet)
- Garreth, along with his best friend and rival Tracy, discover that Anthony Cummings, an alumni from their university, and head of the second largest conglomerate in the country, opened up an exclusive internship opportunity for graduating economics students. Both Garreth and Tracy decide to apply for the sole slot. Eventually, Garreth is chosen, while Tracy decides to apply for another firm nearby.
- Simultaneously, a boardroom meeting is held in Anthony's building. He announces to the board that the internship program is intended to find the "perfect protege" who could potentially succeed Anthony in his role as Chairman and CEO. The board is both concerned and surprised, especially since Anthony isn't exactly what you'd consider old (he's still 43 years old).
- Several days later, Garreth enters the office of Anthony Cummings. Before meeting the man, he is briefed by Frederick Donner, Executive Vice President of the company. Garreth then enters Anthony's office, where he finds the latter sipping wine while listening to 80s city pop from Japan.
- Garreth eases into the work of being Anthony's intern. While he starts out with mundane paper and desk jobs, Anthony eventually allows Garreth to join him in a board meeting. During this board meeting, Anthony meets with the head of the country's largest conglomerate, Jacinda Lim. Jacinda's daughter, Monica, is also present in the board room. This is the first time Garreth and Monica meet. It is revealed that Anthony has known Jacinda for a long time, since they both went to university together. Anthony suggests that Garreth and Monica work together in finalizing the details of a deal between their companies. Jacinda agrees, and Garreth sets a date for their meeting with Monica.
- Garreth and Monica are initially shy and professional around each other, but eventually, they hit it off. Tracy notices this when she passed by the both of them at a coffee shop nearby. When Monica left, Tracy approaches Garreth. Tracy then informs Garreth that Monica's family is the richest in the entire country, and that their family is notorious for turning away the suitors of their children. Garreth, however, is undeterred, saying that "we're just coworkers." Tracy, knowing that this is a lie (and that Garreth is developing feelings), tells him to be careful unless he wants to get hurt.
- Simultaneously, Jacinda and Monica are talking in their household. Jacinda notices that Monica smiles whenever talking about her time working with Garreth. This worries Jacinda, since she does not approve of her daughter getting into a relationship with a "mere intern" with a "mediocre background." There is also another reason in her mind, but she holds her tongue, hoping that this is all just a phase.
- Two months later, it becomes clear to Jacinda that this is not a phase. She then gives Monica the talk. Monica, despondent, has no choice but to obey her mother's wishes. She still meets with Garreth, but their meetings are now curt and overtly professional. Garreth asks if something is wrong, but Monica says it's all fine, and reminds him that they're "just co-workers, nothing more."
- The uncertainty affects Garreth's performance. It also makes him stay in the office for long hours. This does not escape the notice of Anthony, who asks Garreth to come into his office and tell him what happened. When Garreth explained his situation with Monica, Anthony grimaced. Garreth then asked him why he did that, and Anthony simply replies that he knew that this would come to pass. He consoles Garreth, telling him that he can back out of the project if it's too painful for him, but Garreth insists on continuing the work.
- After Garreth leaves the office, Anthony proceeds to Jacinda's office across town. Walking into her office, he finds her buried in work. Without hesitation, he sits in front of her desk and demands that they speak. Jacinda tells him that she knows what it's about, and that it's nonnegotiable. Anthony asks her why she can't just give her daughter the freedom to love whom she wants to love. Jacinda simply stares at Anthony and tells him that he, of all people, should know why.
- Anthony, after a brief pause, goes on a litany about how nothing seems to be have changed. He then proceeds to remind Jacinda that their company needs the deal more than Anthony does; though their company is bigger than his, his company is much more liquid and is growing at an impressive rate. This angers Jacinda, leading her to ask Anthony if he is blackmailing her. Anthony replies that he isn't; rather, he is asking her to see reason. "If not for yourself, then for your daughter."
- Jacinda explains that everything that she does is for her daughter. Anthony replies that he understands that, but that her overzealousness is actually hurting her daughter. He tells her that she sees her daughter crying as she walks up the flight of stairs leading to his (Anthony's office). He then explains that Garreth is a responsible lad, and that he (Anthony) can guarantee with confidence that he will grow up to be successful. Jacinda asks: how can you guarantee that?
- Anthony tells her the truth: he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer, and has less than a year left to live. During this time, he hoped to find a worthy successor to his company. While he didn't expect to hand over the reins to Garreth immediately (the company will be held in trust by the EVP and his other trusted friends), majority of the stake will eventually be given to Garreth over the coming years. This leads Jacinda to cry at the realization that her good friend and rival, Anthony, had less than a year to live.
- "You never even found love, after all these years," says Jacinda to Anthony. "Love was always all around me. You guys, my friends, are all I needed. I wouldn't trade you guys for the world," replies Anthony. Jacinda then tells Anthony that she needs time to think. Anthony tells her that all he asks is that she be open minded (not in the networking sort of way). Anthony then leaves, but as he walked down the stairs, he collapses. He is then brought to the hospital.
- Garreth rushes to the hospital, along with other members of the board. Anthony asks that he be allowed to speak with Garreth alone. He asks Garreth if he had made amends with Monica. Garreth then tells Anthony that Monica had made the fateful decision to work abroad in order to forget about him. This was, however, before Anthony talked to Jacinda (at this point, Jacinda was willing to allow it, but Monica said "it'll only be a matter of time before you try to break us apart again'). Anthony, while coughing up blood, tells Garreth to leave him, get on Anthony's private jet, and go after Monica. When Garreth hesitates to leave Anthony, the latter says "I'll die soon anyway, whether or not you leave. Might as well make me a happy man and go after the one you love." Garreth thanks him and heads for the airport. As Garreth arrived at the airport, Anthony breathed his last in the presence of his closest friends (including Jacinda).
- Garreth arrives in the country. Finds Monica. And they make amends.
- Back home, Frederick reveals to Garreth the contents of Anthony's will. He is shocked to learn that, aside from charity, he is the sole inheritor of Anthony's estate. While Frederick will serve as Chairman and CEO in the foreseeable future, he merely serves as trustee of Garreth's stocks for a period of five years. Garreth is then made the new Executive Vice President of the company. A few months later, he marries Monica in a grand wedding. During the wedding, he pays tribute to Anthony, the man who made everything possible.
- During the epilogue, Garreth talks with Frederick and learns everything about Anthony., particularly how he ended up become the reclusive, lone-wolf businessman that was. He also learns the truth behind how Anthony convinced Jacinda to acquiesce to his relationship with Monica, and why Anthony felt strongly about Garreth's predicament. Tears roll down Garreth's face, but Frederick consoles him, telling him that Anthony is probably smiling right down at him.
[THIS IS A ROUGH OUTLINE OF THE MAIN STORY. SIMILAR TO THE EMPIRE, EACH CHARACTER HAS SUBPLOTS WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THIS MAIN PLOT. CHARACTERS WILL ALSO FOLLOW SOON AFTER, OR IF TIME WON'T PERMIT, SOMETIME LATE DECEMBER]

The announcement of forthcoming Broadway productions of Torch Song, a pioneering play about a gay character, and a stage adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a drama about a case of racial injustice, comes in a week when most news seems at best discouraging —

Mass Shootings on Stage: Healing or Titillating?
It’s worth noting that Glenda Jackson left acting for 23 years after she became a member of Parliament to fight Thatcherism. “There’s no way you could do both,” she says in an article linked below, hooked to her return to Broadway in “Three Tall Women”
On the other hand, “I think my work is always at its best during Republican administrations,” Tony Kushner says in an article, also linked below, about the forthcoming Broadway revival of “Angels in America.”
Also below: Katharine McPhee makes her Broadway debut; a new August Wilson award; the World Trade Center performing arts center gets an artistic director; playwrights Lynn Nottage and Terrence McNally get a new honor; a million dollars will be given away for good ideas about using technology to help the arts.
Week in New York Theater Reviews
Kings
”There is one thing about which we all agree, left, right, center: Money has corrupted our politics,” says Rep. Sydney Millsap (Eisa Davis), summing up the point and the plot of “Kings,” a new play written by Sarah Burgess (“Dry Powder”) and directed by Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”) at the Public Theater. The Congresswoman, a Gold Star widow newly elected as the first black woman to represent her district in Dallas, Texas, learns the bitter lesson of money and politics while fighting to resist the moneyed interests and do what’s right on a particular bill.
Terminus
Eller (Deirdre O’Connell) is losing her mind, and thus lives in two worlds on stage in “Terminus,” a lyrical, Southern Gothic stew of a play by Gabriel Jason Dean running through March 10 at Next Door at New York Theatre Workshop. In one of her worlds, it is 1994, and Eller, 65, resides in a soon-to-be-condemned shack by the railroad tracks in rural Attapulugus, Georgia with her biracial grandson Jaybo (Reynaldo Piniella), 17, who takes care of her as best he can. The other world is in Eller’s head, populated by family long gone — people whom she abandoned or who abandoned her – a ghastly past full of racism, stifled love, hidden homicide, chanting ghosts, a train-flattened nail in the shape of a cross, a gold-leafed Bible opened to a prophetic page, and a noose.
