Eda Clawthorne-The Owl House

Qualifications:

She has a magical chronic disorder which has flare-ups, is mitigated by taking medication (potions), and has similar side effects to many real disorders such as fatigue, greying hair, and physical impairment (drains magic, a natural ability of *most witches). Unlike in other stories however, her condition is NOT ever completely cured. It does evolve and become more manageable over the course of the story, but she still experiences symptoms from it. Eda also loses one of her arms later in the story. She does get a replacement hook, but it is never shown whether she has a functional prosthetic or not. Most likely, she only has one fully functioning arm after this. As for being queer, she is in a relationship with a nonbinary person and is all but confirmed bisexual (has a secret box with the bi flag on it seriously why else would she have this). Also the owl house has a Lot of queer characters in it and I mean. just look at her. I would be surprised if she wasn't queer somehow.

Bisexual, and has a curse that affects her day to day life

Propaganda:

Has canonically dated both men and a non-binary person. Her curse affects her ability to use magic (and at one point outright stops it), which is very important in witch life. Said curse also causes her body parts to fall off sometimes. Many have said her curse is like a metaphor for depression but really it's more like a magic version of a physical disability (although I wouldn't be surprised if she actually also had depression).

It originated the phrase "Arm Chopping is not a love language!" Did I mention he's a main character too?

A knight, Nimona's best friend and father figure of sorts, but the plot mostly revolves around him- Ballister is framed for murder and has to hide while trying to figure out who framed him and how to prove he's innocent. Nimona becomes his sidekick (he didn't want one, she just showed up at his place one day like a very chaotic stray cat) and together they form a great duo against the corrupt government. This is complicated by Ballister's ex Ambrosius, who accidentally cut off Ballister's arm and is a bit brainwashed by government propaganda. Oops. You should watch Nimona it's great 💞🦈

I made a little writeup for myself recently due to an exchange, so: tell me your favorite chronological point of divergence for what ifs?/canon divergence AUs regarding Theon. I doubt I would be able to list every canon divergence in terms of what actually happens in it, so for now I'm just trying to identify the point at which people most like his storyline to diverge from canon, will provide some examples of each under the poll but I do not pretend to know every scenario this fandom produces.

explanations/examples:

Before the Greyjoy rebellion: Theon grows up on the Iron Islands, the Greyjoys win the rebellion, Rhaegar wins Robert's rebellion and therefore politics are extremely different for everyone including Theon

pre-AGOT: something goes differently about Theon's hostage status such as he has Asha with him he goes elsewhere besides Winterfell he escapes etc, he's married off/executed/at risk of being executed and something happens in reaction to that/sent to the Wall prior to canon

AGOT: Bran doesn't fall at all, Theon goes to King's Landing with the Northern party, Ned succeeds in King's Landing, Cat succeeds in her plans with Tyrion, the wildlings succeeds kidnapping Bran idk anything could happen and it has influence on Theon's life

ACOK, prior to being sent to Pyke: Theon remains with Robb for the entirety of the war being the big one, but also options where he gets a different role to play, different alliances are made, the war does not escalate to the point it does in canon etc.

ACOK, after being sent to Pyke but before taking Winterfell: he deserts his family to go back to Robb, the diplomatic mission to Pyke is more succesful, he does not decide to take Winterfell or fails to do so

ACOK, after taking Winterfell: he takes Winterfell but avoids the child murders, he takes Bran and Rickon as hostages back to Pyke, he consents to go with Asha when she reaches him, he somehow is succesful holding Winterfell, everything goes the same but he's not taken prisoner by Ramsay...

Between ACOK and ADWD: he succesfully runs with Kyra, any form of being saved or running from the Dreadfort during that timespan, Ramsay gets a different role to play and he goes with him, he's traded as prisoner to Robb or someone else, someone else is captured with him

ADWD, before meeting Jeyne: he abandons Ramsay at Moat Cailin, he's separated from Ramsay for any reason, the Jeyne plot does not happen and something else is done with his arc instead, including other characters being in Jeyne's place

ADWD, after meeting Jeyne: he's involved in any of the Northern politicking at Winterfell, he does not go along with the fiction that Jeyne is Arya either to the Boltons or to the spearwives, anything happens to stop the wedding, Stannis attacks before he can escape

Between ADWD and TWOW: the escape attempt is unsuccesful, the Umbers send Theon back to Ramsay, they're sent elsewhere rather than to Stannis... can't think of many others but surely there are

Tw mentions of abuse

I want to discuss why I’m changing up Garte’s little backstory of being abusive a slight bit but I’m not incredibly eloquent. Please be patient and berate me on anon if you really feel like it.

Basically

Canonically it’s due to medical PTSD, but he’s also a villain for power-induced corruption. I don’t think they presented well enough these two things in conjunction, but we know that Garte is power hungry and has been long enough for Garroth to fear becoming like him and run away, and also for it to shape Zane’s personality into what it became.

This implies that Garte’s thirst for power then started when Zane was still very impressionable, at the very latest. And this does, of course, line up with Garte’s recovery from his illness. It’s likely that the canon reasoning for it is that after he recovered, he didn’t want to feel that same loss of control that terminal illness can cause, and as such became power-thirsty and corrupt to try and cope.

That said, one of the major aspects of my rewrite is the uh… the inherently corrupt nature of the lord system and all those that O’Khasis runs on. Garte, being someone who was raised on and benefits from, and contributes to these systems… would then be an inherently corrupt guy already. He would still be abusive, even if it isn’t directed at his family, or at least not in the way it was in canon. O’Khasis was formed under imperialism and the bloodline of those that enacted that imperialism… is still seated there, just under another title. He’s already a bad person, and no doubt his family would suffer for this.

I do believe, very thoroughly, that Garte was meant to kind of mirror Aerys Targ. We know Jess was a GOT fan, considering… Greywind.. but they both kind of have a similar backstory. They were both benevolent rulers, before a near death experience turned them evil and abusive, and now they need to be taken down. And I hate this. Not because ‘none of Jess’ characters are original’ or whatever people whine about. But I just don’t personally like how often this trope happens.

I don’t like abusers being given an excuse for the abuse they enact upon others. Especially in the case of Garte Ro’Meave who, through the wonders of modern medical science, is no longer abusive in MyS because he didn’t have that near death experience.

The ONE thing we knew about Garte was how negatively he impacted his kids, and they couldn’t even be consistent with it. Zane and Garroth’s dynamic is interesting because it’s two people who dealt with the same abuse and had to adapt different methods to survive, except only one of them was the ‘right’ way to survive, and they’re now being pit against eachother due to the morals they were taught by an abusive father and a mother who couldn’t do anything to stop him. But MyS just washed it away because… garte got his flu vaccination or something idk

Anyways, might talk about Zane later if I’m feeling silly.

Thank you-thank you! Character design is such a big hobby of mine, I'm glad people have been enjoying what I make!

As for my process, that's a bit complex as to how to explain. I have a sort of 'go with the flow' kind of style, just doing what feels right without any real conscious considerations for thought to it until I get to the coloring, but let's see if I can try to explain my process for one...

This may be a little lengthy, so I'll put it below the cut!

I think I'll use the work for the archbishops as an example as to what my more 'focused' design concepting goes, so let's dive in!

Now, to start from the very beginning, originally, I had only intended to have Michael. I knew I wanted to make a sort of 'mentor' figure for Narinder, the previous Red Crown bearer, and I wanted them to have a sort of stark appearance--albino, red/black robes, and all that.

However, I hadn't decided on the species. I won't elaborate on why I asked this specific question, but I asked twitter what bird they would most strongly associate with a phoenix, or think of as an interesting kind of phoenix--the options, if I recall, were Flamingo, Secretary Bird, and Peacock. There might have been a fourth one but idk.

Anyway, as I let the poll run to decide where I would start, I began to get more solid ideas on the character that this design would end up being, thus, in the end I decided to override the poll and go with flamingo.

Then began the visual concepting.

First I did a more 'realistic' pass at a flamingo, to try and figure out what the key details for the species were that I would want to adapt into my style. Then I moved onto the more 'my' style, messing with how they would look as a bishop--It's here I decided the more snake-like details for the neck, noting how it looked in the reference picture I grabbed.

Now, usually I don't type or write out my concept thoughts, but I was sharing these on twitter as I was working with them, so I jotted some stuff down so people could see my thoughts.

The name was probably the hardest to settle on. I know I wanted to go with an angel name, but there were a few good options.

But it was when I was looking up names that I found some other interesting angels, and that's when the idea for the other archbishops came, and then this whole section of story.

So, concepting for the others began.

I hadn't originally planned to make all the archbishops birds, but when looking at the species I had from the poll as well as some other thoughts I had, eventually I applied species that I thought would best fit the themes of the crowns--Secretary Birds, for instance, are quite vicious with their kicks when handling snakes, so that would be the Purple Crown's bird.

Verchiel was actually the first one I had 100% decided on the name for, after seeing what the angel Verchiel was representative of. As you can see, I found the basic sketch pose for Verchiel's concepts strong, so I pretty much directly lifted them for his ref.

The only major difference from the sketch is the shape of his tail--When I started the linework, the feathers actually ended up looking quite like a pair of upturned palms. It was a coincidence, but I liked it a lot, so I went with it.

As for why I thought a peacock would fit the Blue Crown--That largely ties into my rambling about the sin crowns from a while ago and how the I handle the domains of the Major Crowns based on these--With Pestilence, it's the vibe of haughtiness when it comes sickness. Avoiding the ill and seeing them as 'disgusting,' while also not doing anything to help them. Thus, a peacock was the perfect fit.

Phanuel's species was also influenced by this, due to pelicans having those large pouches, being able to swallow up a lot of stuff at once. I had also considered a shoebill, but in the end decided on pelican... Namely because of a certain meme.

He didn't have much in-detail concepting, a mix of my hand wearing down by that point and not really knowing what to do in terms of sketches, so I was content to save more work for when I moved on to the actual ref.

As for Zuriel... Yep, originally I had planned for her to be a hummingbird! It was largely because of the fact a lot of species are brilliant shades of green, and also the 'small, but turns into Many for eldritch form' idea I had.

However, as I was prepping to do refs, I wasn't sure how much I vibed with that, so I decided to do a last-minute change to a lyrebird.

This is pretty much all I have in terms of 'concept' for Zuriel's final appearance, and what pushed me over the edge to deciding that, yes, this is what I wanted, was the fact lyrebirds are wonderful mimics for sounds. I realized, if I was going to do the flashback stuff I was prepping for, that could open so many possibilities, and this she became a lyrebird.

Now, in terms of colors, I think I will switch gears to focus on a different set of birds.

The owl siblings!

I had the help of a couple of friends to design the basic concepts (namely for Eligos, Zagan, and Decarabia), but I made the final tweaks to their colors and stuff, because that was the main design aspect I had in mind for them.

Each of the owl siblings is supposed to be faintly reminiscent of the crowns, and this is reflected primarily in their plumage--they have desaturated tones of the respective main hue of the crown they resemble.

Recall, in Stolas' original design, he was much more brown:

But when I decided on this aspect--with the intention of Stolas being the one representative of the Red Crown, I took the updated ref as an opportunity to also adjust his colors to be a bit more red.

When working with colors, I work best with analogous palettes--I can definitely do complimentary ones, but I tend to save complimentary colors for accents rather than the main portion of a design.

And as far as how I decide on colors, it's really just a matter of me fiddling with things until I think they look right.

Polly is an example of a character's palette that took me a bit, because it's more varied than what I usually do. But as I sketched her, she reminded me of Hatsune Miku, so I knew I wanted a kind of teal palette with pink accents, so... Well!

Members of Verchiel's order are also giving me a bit of an exercise with this, because compared to others, they're supposed to be a bit more colorful/extravagant due to the views in said order--Hell, Verchiel xemself has the most varied palette of the entire archbishops, because of that whole vanity thread that's such a strong aspect of xer character.

Color palettes can also help get the aspects of the character across on the first glance, so that's another bit that Verchiel's more gaudy appearance ties into.

I've been making OCs and the like for YEARS, so a LOT of this stuff is second nature to me at this point, so sorry if it doesn't really get to what you want or even makes much sense... But I hope it's eye-opening in any case!

okay so. the thing is. i mostly tend to think more about sexual dynamics for fictional characters/pairings i like, and less actual kinks if that makes sense? so most of this rant will be that instead of specific kinks i think they have. there's also probably a lot more i could be convinced they're into & i just haven't thought of it yet (bcuz whenever i do think about specific kinks it's about a scenario that popped into my head lol) so this also isn't a definitive list.

let's get started on the mommy kink even though you said "other than" bcuz that's where a lot of their sexual dynamic in my head builds off of lol. i think they are both very into that dynamic (wanda is a very nurturing person and enjoys taking care of people, pietro is always wound up so tightly & thinks protecting wanda is like his life mission or whatever so he really likes being able to relax, lie back and being pampered etc). building off of that, they're both into femdom obviously (mostly gentle femdom, except ultimate scarletsilver, i think they do bdsm lmao), pietro has a praise kink (though i think wanda also really likes being praised), and as tumblr user ill-say-this-fast has mentioned in the rbs of my tits or ass guy pietro poll this man is definitely into lactation yeah. sorry.

(also if you asked wanda what her type in men is he'd say calm and gentle. you would ask yourself what that has to do with pietro. she is talking about him. her glasses might be a little rose tinted, but also we all know pietro is way more gentle w her than he is w anyone else lmfao)

as to how willing they're to share their preferences, i think that depends? with a lot of the simple stuff i think they've always been able to talk about it, and wanda generally is more secure in herself (these days) so i think she has less trouble. pietro i think used to be very embarrassed about all the sub stuff bcuz of some misguided idea what a man should be like, but he eventually opened up and wanda is only ever nice about things he's embarrassed about so. mostly i think it took wanda explicitly noticing/being told by him that he's submissive to really discover her own dominant streak through trying things out but i think she mostly steers on the gentle side of things (bcuz she wuvs wuvs wuvs him) but there's times where she does really like being rougher, too. which pietro loves so yknow.

if it's with a partner that is not each other, i think wanda is able to communicate what she likes, but she wouldn't share everything. the gentle dom thing is something she'd share with other partners definitely though i think that's just something she likes a lot. as for pietro... not really? it depends. if it's a long term relationship, sure, he might cough it up eventually (or he gets lucky and his partner brings up they want to dom lmfao), but i think it's hard for him to open up. i already mentioned misguided ideas of what a man should be like so i think it's especially hard if he's with a woman, and he might just pretend he likes taking charge bcuz of his pride. it's easier with a man bcuz he can just pick some asshole to rail him. he has a harder time emotionally connecting with men than with women, i think (bcuz of mostly bad experiences w other man throughout his teenage years etc. like except for his adoptive dad every man he meets at the beginning of his publication history is just an asshole lmfao), so he tends to have more one night stands with men than actual relationships i think (imo he's a whore. i know people love to disagree bcuz he's only had like three and a half canon love interests but he's a whore to ME okay) but with an actual relationship w a man it's ALSO hard for him to open up (bcuz he has trouble w men etc) but he mostly just goes for guys who are dom-ish tops anyway so he doesn't need to open his mouth. lol

Okay THIS is the question I’ve been hung up on for an hour because damn.

I thought the answer was easy - wizarding world - because who doesn’t want to be a wizard?? But there’s like. So many good options here.

SO my official answer is actually Doctor Who. Which is kinda silly bc it takes place legit on earth?? But I’d just have the ability to be the companion and travel? Like the 11th Doctor IS my comfort character. He makes me feel safe. He makes me feel special and loved and that’s so silly to say out loud lmfao rip but he’s all I had when I was having a rough time like ages 13-17 and so yeah. That’s my final answer. Doctor Who reality.

•A food you want to try?

I have never tried a macaron??? And they look so good but I have no idea what to expect!? So I really want to try one I’m just scared it’ll disappoint lol.

Listen I’ve thought about this for YEARS. Because at first it was flying and then it was invisibility and then it was telekinesis.

I’m usually a milkshake gal. Either classic cookies n cream with the hot fudge drizzle OR peanut butter chocolate ((but only if I’m at Baskin Robbins)).

HOWEVER if we’re talking exclusive ice cream only - it’s a tie between “Circus animal cookie” from this local shop by my house OR “chocolate malted crunch” from the Thrifty’s inside RiteAid lol

•Do you collect anything?

Too many things. I collect certain coins - mostly diff variations of the quarters. I have a display book that has all of the 50 states series. Then I have a second display book with 49/50 state national parks ((looking for that last one god dammit)) and now I’m collecting the new series of historical women!! And it’s so cool bc the George Washington on the front is a different one than the other quarters! I also have like a silver penny and some other random rare ones from the past that were gifts.

I also collect Featherly Friends birds from Target ☠️ they have me in a chokehold, what can I say?

•Fave candy bar?

Chocolate candy bar? Twix. Hands down. But candy in general I actually go for strawberry or cherry sour punch straws. 🤤

Okay so this do be my mental illness but I can never ever decide on one theme or pattern for a phone case and most of the decorative ones seem flimsy?? So deadass mine is a two-toned pink otterbox case 🤣
