Black and White Modern Farmhouse
This large-scale renovation and addition transformed the modest home into a larger modern farmhouse with a classic black and white palette. The interior has been completed with all new finishes, custom cabinetry, and reclaimed barnwood accents throughout the first floor & second floor.
Edward Deegan Architects (previously featured here & here) worked closely on the project with this client. The clients weren’t afraid to use bold wallpaper or a funky light fixture. The interior designer repurposed many of their existing furniture pieces and accessories and the client’s eclectic taste helped bring color and life to the overall palette. Building and remodeling a home takes trust and believing in the team you’ve hired to create something you will love.
Make sure to pin your favorite modern farmhouse interior design ideas and have a great time, my friends!

A Well-Designed Bathroom = A Well-Designed Home
Many Philadelphia homeowners feel that the kitchen is the most important room in the house when it comes to resale. However, studies have found that home buyers really think that a well-designed bathroom makes a home worth buying. While many house hunters are getting used to fabulous kitchens, bathrooms can still be an afterthought, so the truly marvelous stand out. Let’s examine how you can get your Philadelphia bathroom to be an inspirational design.
Tumblr media
Low Cost /Low Effort Pick Me Ups:
As usual a can of paint can make a huge difference in any room of your home, including the bathroom. What makes the bathroom design different is that you can do a brighter, bolder color in the bathroom even if the rest of your house is soothing neutrals. In general, you want your home to flow and color is the best way to do that. The exception is the bathroom. In here you can go wild!
Wallpaper is the trend of 2019/2020 and the bathroom is the perfect place to use wallpaper as the focal point of your design. Even in a small powder room a large wallpaper pattern is not out of place. It says, “this is a creative home.”
Don’t forget the towels. I am always disappointed when I walk into a gorgeous well-thought out bathroom and the towels don’t match or are just faded and old.
Shelving over the toilet. This is an area that is often neglected. It can have a huge impact on your bathroom design. Recycled wood shelves can emphasize a modern farmhouse design and sleek white shelves can be the key to a modern bathroom statement.
High Cost/High Effort Revamps:
Update your plumbing fixtures. The newest tones such as matte black or rose gold are classic and new at the same time. Your fixtures don’t even have to match. One style of transitional faucet for the sink and another for the shower gives your bathroom a design flair that shows you know how to mix and match.
New tile on the floors can also add a statement to your bathroom. Patterned cement tile can be used with what many bathrooms already have in the shower, subway tile, to give the whole bathroom a farmhouse feels, envied by Philadelphia neighbors everywhere.
While you are putting in the new floor tile, why not add radiant floor heating. Not only does this sound great in real-estate ads, the heat feels great on your feet on a cold winter morning.
Of course, the best way to get a wonderful new bathroom design is to redesign and remodel your bathroom. This way you can make use of all the options available to you from tile to cabinetry to sinks and faucets. With a bathroom redesign I always recommend that you have an overall theme for your bathroom so you can narrow the huge number of options available to you. I suggest a one-word theme such as oasis, spa, farmhouse, eclectic, or my favorite, bold.

Play Of Material And Textures Leads To A Modern And Luxurious Residence|HS Desiigns <a href="https://www.savidevelopers.com">Savi Developers</a>
Play Of Material And Textures Leads To A Modern And Luxurious Residence|HS Desiigns
The house being in Mumbai, demanded a bold and contemporary thinking and the client also wanted the same but with clean lines and a hint of sophistication. With interesting play on material and textures, a modern and luxurious feel for achieved for this residence which stays true to persona of the occupants.
The client’s brief was straightforward and crisp. They wanted a home that would have a clear narrative in terms of function and decor. The design dint necessarily need to be chest thumping in its proclamation of identity but must bear the mark of their quiet, confident lifestyle.Keeping their requirement and lifestyle in check, the vocabulary for the house was derived.
An aura of class and modern elegance permeates every nook of this beautiful and functional apartment. The living room opening to terrace and the bar counter create a changing interior dynamic in a highly sculptural manner.
The idea of using copper mirror, especially in the living area was purposely done to break the rectangular feel of that space. Moreover since the living room has a huge balcony, there was an ample light flow into the space. Hence mirror cladding was done to brighten up the space by reflecting natural light and make the room look larger than its normal size.
Black leather sofas and wall wood panelling on the other hand exude a minimal elegance of mid-century design. With regards to the furniture, the styling was kept modern and in tune with the overall appeal of the space. Decorative lighting in terms of chandeliers, hanging lights and table lamps were customised to add warmth to the space and cover volumes.
The highlight of the gold and white dining section is the beautiful accent colour book matched marble cladded as the backdrop of the dining area; with custom made, suspended ceiling lights which invariable grab attention. To create a visual linkage from the living area to the bedrooms, veneer panelling with self on self handles was done creating a sense of connection. Thus detailing also helped in camouflaging multiple bedroom doors , thereby reducing the number of elements seen in the passage and only the painting on the corridor wall is highlighted giving it a sense of depth.
In terms of colour scheme, the walls are washed in neutral hues which cast a spell bounding impression and extend a warm welcome.Neutral hues like white, beige and grey are used in ample measures, and are balanced with warm and earthy tones of wood along with dramatic art pieces which hones the overall experience.
The entire flooring of this house is adorned by one marble except the terrace which uses anti-skid exterior tiles laid with an interesting grout pattern. The edge of the terrace has laser cut in stainless steel made with perforation so that the water seeps in through it and hence the maintenance becomes easier. The terrace adjoining the living area brings in generous amount of light that floods the entire space. A jhoola placed here creates an extension of the indoors to the outside and vice versa.
The clients required a bar unit but did not want it to be visible in the living area. So we interpreted it minimally on the terrace area which otherwise forms a sculptural wall elements when not in use.
Every bedroom features panels of fabric which adorn the rooms in varied ways and is designed for maximum utilization. The master bedroom is done up in tones of grey to break the monotony of beige colour. The colour infusion is essentially done through cushions, artefacts and paintings thereby creating some form of vibrancy in a neutral palette.
Since this was a residential apartment, we didn’t have much height to play with, hence the majority ceiling in all the bedrooms are kept subtle to neutralise the detailing along the walls. The space allows alludes to epic murals featured on bed back wall. The unique art collection of the client was indeed a proverbial icing on the cake.
The daughter’s room is youthful and vibrant. Though consistency has been maintained throughout the house in terms of colour scheme, a dash of pink in this room breaks the monotony and adds vibrancy to the decor. The use of white colour in this room additionally exudes an element of space while the clutter free decor makes the style statement.
The artefacts and frames were chosen keeping in mind the essence of the space and to create drama by telling a story in an otherwise neutral environment. For instance: a winged angel is fixed on the bed back wall which livens up the ambience as one enters into the daughter’s room.Every minute detail was carefully worked upon so as to eliminate any extraneous elements.
With a keen eye for pattern and composition and after careful assessment of needs and lifestyle of client and his family, who are widely travelled, we proposed a design which effectively translates their globe-trotting experience and taste into subtle yet classy interiors. The master bathroom is hence done in a tasteful combination of grey and white coloured diesel tiles along with the striking bold red colour.
The powder room makes a bold and welcoming statement with a decor that is a combination of white and gold and the striking sculptural human element along with the decorative mirror that features the wall. The standalone built –in basin was made in the same tile as in the kitchen with a basic storage area incorporated within the basin at the bottom.Furnished with intricate detailing, eclectic elements and aesthetics, this plush abode has been designed as a space that welcomes and calms one’s senses, while being captivating at the same time.

30 Buoyant Blue Bedrooms That Add Tranquility and Calm to Your Sleeping Space
Signifying security and calm, blue is everyone’s favourite colour. Unconfrontational and ever so mellow, it reminds of the gently rolling sea, beach holidays and the stillness of the world’s most beautiful lakes. These 30 bedrooms use blue to create spaces that infuse tranquillity and calm into your downtime. Whether you’re colouring in bright turquoise, royal or pastel baby blues; colouring your whole bedroom blue or simply painting a lintel; you’ll notice the feeling of calmness the hue brings to an interior. Take a gander through our collection of beautiful blue bedrooms, to see how pieces in this cooler shade could work in your next sleeping space.
Source: Ikea   Many blues combine to make this bedroom come together. Fronted by a greyscale oil abstract, mid-blue walls combine with a turquoise floor and teal cushions for deep sea exploration. Pops of white, grey and purple show themselves in desks, bedding and a rug, giving the room’s intense colours room to breathe.
Designer: Vera Tarlovskaya Interiors   Feel like a princess, in a blue and green bedroom. A chiffon canopy overlays this French-headboarded bed, while a strip of frog green stripes over the top. Simple white bedroom tables and a lightly-embroidered bedspread add to the feeling of serenity. A tropical pillow atop brings it all together.
Source: Ikea   Build a blue and yellow bedroom that’s devilishly serene. The light teals of this boudoir cover walls, door frames and corridors, while light wooden flooring reminds of a beach house. White and a potted plant provide light, as a desk chair acts as an eye-catching feature.
Visualizer: Andrew Rudoi   Only have a small room? Use white, LEDs and lighter blues to create space. A sky-hued wall heads up white shelves and a striped wardrobe, while a turquoise duvet intersperses more white. A deep blue curtain frames the space.
Visualizer: Koj Design   Ditch sea blues for more regal colouring. The powder blue wall in this modern couple’s space works well with an almost-charcoal duvet and multi-tone spiral print. Patterns in the dressing chair and rug add points of interest, whilst large swathes of white ensure blue doesn’t dominate.
Source: Columbini Casa   Love blue in its many shades? Think about smarter colour combinations. This bedroom paints a ceiling ledge and one wall turquoise, using baby blue in stripes beside beige blocks. A denim blue circular rug, striped pillows and darker books create an eclectic space.
Source: Columbini Casa   Make a splash with neon blue. White and light wood complement this modern bedroom perfectly, as bright blue covers a wall, book shelves and a bed. Wide windows, concrete floors and lots of space construct a room that’s cool, not cluttered.
Source: Columbini Casa   Blue rooms aren’t just for adults. This quirky kids’ bedroom uses turquoise to back bookshelves, a cabinet and bedside table, while white and beige fill in the rest. An adventurous model airplane and corrugated metal feature make this a room to remember.
Visualizer: Eke Interiors    Deck out your kids’ sleeping space in full-on blue. This room keeps its walls and windows light, highlighting a single bed, pull-out mattress and bookcase in turquoise blue. A circular mat and picture frames tie the hue further in. An orange seat and lamp offer complementary colouring.
Designer: Onion   Why not create a kids’ haven? Turquoise marks the spot in this two-level sleeping space, which leans ladders to the upper bed, a coloured panel around the lower. Double mattresses and a large cloud decal make this much more interesting than your standard bunk.
Visualizer: SumoD   A blue and purple bedroom creates an entirely different mood. With Marilyn on the feature wall and orchids on the floor, this gorgeous girl’s room makes blue pretty as lilac, white and yellow join the party. Nifty shelves and drawers beneath offer secret storage.
Visualizer: Mimar Interiors    Minimalist is the word for this blue and grey bedroom. A typographic feature wall heads the space, with an enclave lined in blue. Grey wooden floors, light chiffon curtaining and low furniture show elegance. A blue ottoman and mat tie it all in.
Take it to the next level with LED lighting. Featuring lighting panels in the ceiling, under-bed skirting and around the desk, this white room with blue lightbulbs takes you to New York at night. White floor tiling keeps it looking sleek.
Visualizer: Saimir Brahao    Go for casual cool in darker blue shades. Set on a concrete floor, an almost-black wall and dark denim mingle with simple wood and white furnishings. Two colourful bulbs and pop art prints complete the look.
Many shades of blue contribute to this bedroom’s zen. A dark blue wall heads the bed, a striped rug the floor and an almost-grey throw the covers, while a filigree lamp glows through the darkness. Two swing arm wall lamps illuminate a place for sleeping.
Designer: Flat Design   Want to travel the world? Make a blue feature wall your inspiration. This blue and grey bedroom maps out the globe, using a bed-come-couch and velvet ottoman as colour coders.
Source: Ikea   Transition your teenager into a more grown-up room. This fleur-de-lis wallpaper, baby blue duvet and dramatic drapery provide childlike comforts, whilst white furnishings and two wicker bedroom chairs look to the future.
Visualizer: Gaurav   This contemporary room for two shows a blue bedroom set is sometimes all you need. Set upon a concrete accent wall, teardrop wall icons, woollen rug spheres and a quilted bed frame keep it cosy. A wooden floor brings warmth, a private deck the summer view.
Visualizer: Int2 Architecture   Design your blue bedroom Scandinavian-style. Complete with a circular hanging mirror, orange grasshopper lamp, open wardrobe and fox print, its half-blue wall reminds of the sea’s rolling tide.
Designer: HAO Design   Prefer pastels? Make like this bedroom, and design a line of oscillating panels. A bright blue duvet and single pendant match the theme perfectly.
Visualizer: Zrobym   It’s hard to find a bedroom that both partners like, but this blue gem could fit the bill. Kept light and airy by a beige and white futon, its corrugated iron creates a not-too-girly feature. A matching chair, ottoman and simple swing lamp create a place for reading, whilst extra books lurk inside the headboard.
Visualizer: Int2 Architecture   Have a small space to work with? Frame your bed in wood, painting a side wall blue. This compact bedroom shows how it’s done, as throw cushions, a simple painting and crouching bedside lamp add flair.
Designer: Metaforma   Love thin wooden panels? This bedroom stretches them over a wall and side ledge, as blue takes centre stage. White surrounding walls, a landscape canvas and potted white peonies bring a sense of grace.
Designer: Division1   Japanese design enthusiasts can’t go past this zen bedroom in blue. A black futon bed, pillow and high-shine wooden flooring meet their match in turquoise bedding, an ottoman and glass-covered prints. LED lighting and white keep the look minimalist.
Source: 55kvadrat   This blue bedroom could have you dreaming of Scandinavia. A gorgeous shade of teal covers all four walls in this Nordic style, which uses white to frame all the spaces inbetween. Unusual fixtures in the fluffy chandelier, monochrome prints and idle suitcases make this a beautiful example for Scandinavian bedrooms.
Designer: Karen B Wolf   After a light blue bedroom instead? This quirky little number places mirrors on its bedside table, quilting on its headboard and a textured print beside it. Touches of soft grey and white enhance its pale, fresh hue.
Source: Echelon Custom Homes   Use blue to create striking colour combinations. The dramatic striped rug of this boudoir pairs with a red duvet, patterned cushions and a turquoise headboard, infusing a Mediterranean feel. A baby blue border around the walls’ uppers softens the contrast.
Visualizer: ArchiCGI   Create difference with tiny pops of colour. The blues in this bedroom’s prints and cushions set its white walls and wooden floors apart from the neighbours’. A string of fairy lights gives the room a festive feel.
Source: World Market   Rather be at the beach? This rustic bedroom sits you right beside the sea. Light wooden ceilings provide room to breathe, above a deep blue panel. A patterned blue duvet and raft of competing cushions add character, while three metallic wall sconces above head a space for reading.
Visualizer: Donara Dolgopolskaya   Make a splash in blue and yellow. This bedroom borders on the artistic, with a painterly rug, textured graphic wall and gothic fireplace for company. Yellow heads up two geometric feature chairs and a vase-shaped bedroom table. Metallic bedroom pendant lights polish off the look opposite a golden wall sconce.

East Hampton Modern Farmhouse Beautifully designed by Debra Geller of Debra Geller Interior Design, this East Hampton home combines classic interior design with modern farmhouse influences. Here, the designer gives more details about this impressive home. “This client already lived in their home for 16 years and they wanted to make major changes. We did a gut renovation and doubled the size of the house from approx. 4000 sf to 8000 sf. These clients were amazing and easy to work with and have great sense of style. My vision was to incorporate their love of family, easy living, and beauty and create an amazing space for them. I used reclaimed barn wood on the living room feature wall, beautiful wide plank oak floors throughout, stained a pretty custom mixed neutral gray. We kept that color pallet going in the entire house with paint and fabrics, adding different accent colors in each room. Lighting was a primary feature as well.. each room as a special and spectacular lighting – many lights were custom made for the space. I am also an artist and I painted them a beautiful serene ocean painting for the living room tie it all together as well as a heart painting for the breakfast room, creating more Zen elements. I also designed all of the upholstery, and window treatment, and my workshop J&J upholstery out of Norwalk, made it all for me. All rugs were also custom made for the house, as well as the kitchen table, foyer table with custom made iron base and a bluestone top. I designed and had made a concrete fireplace mantel and a concrete pool bathroom vanity top. The barn door in the breakfast room was also made for the house. Along with a had crafted reclaimed white oak dining table, and a hand made zinc kitchen table.” It was very important to me and my client that entire house flow, with texture, light, color and space, and be warm and livable… I believe I accomplished all of those goals. The best part of my job is seeing my clients face when they walk into their completed home, and tears of happiness roll down their faces.. I have done my job!! I love making people happy.” See all details below: East Hampton Modern Farmhouse “I am a construction and interior designer. Black & White Interior Design Ideas
Hello, my dear friends! How are you today? I hope you’re feeling healthy and things are going well for you.
It’s really wonderful to start this new day sharing with this beautiful home with you. Honestly speaking, I work really hard to bring the best and the latest when it comes to interior design to all of you, and I want you to know how much I appreciate your daily presence on Home Bunch. You guys keep inspiring me!
Now, let’s talk about this gorgeous place!
Tumblr media
Recently built by Timber Trails Development Company and with interiors by Julie Howard (previously featured here, here, here & here), this home features so many fresh ideas that I am sure you will leave the post feeling inspired.
Here, the interior designer shares more about this newly-built home: “The Andover at Timber Trails is a sophisticated and chic farmhouse. One might think those two looks wouldn’t meld well together but the Andover bucks conventional wisdom. Starting with the exterior we traded the traditional white and black farmhouse for a dark grey facade. We love how it pops off the white trim. The stone work elevates the design and grounds the house at the same time. Inside we went with a white and black design warmed up with brass, natural wood, and hints of mossy green. We hope you enjoy this tour of the house we built to showcase creative and awe-inspiring design.” – Julie Howard, In-house designer for Timber Trails Development Company.

Two-toned Kitchen

Kitchen Peninsula
We used a cement tile on the back of the kitchen peninsula. We then used a Caesarstone waterfall to cap the open edge. We love the detail this provides and as a mom, I love the idea of wiping down the dirt that always seems to be where little feet kick. It was a really simple tile project because there isn’t a window or outlet to have to cut around. It’s a flat, plain wall. If you get sick of the tile pattern, it would be so simple just to tile right over the area with another tile.
Cement Tile: Overstock – similar here.
Vertical
The vertical shiplap along side the elegant fixtures and brass hardware is unexpected but somehow works so beautifully together.
Kitchen sconces are Visual Comfort.
Kitchen Hood
By painting the hood white it blends in to the white walls but at the same time stands out from the rest of the black cabinetry. Hood is painted in Benjamin Moore Simply White.
Countertop
Countertop is Caesarstone Statuario Nuvo.

Mirrors
I knew I wanted to have dramatic mirrors that brought your eyes up to a beautiful chandelier. I could not find simple, mid-century style mirrors that were really tall. I decided to use my greatest asset – my trim carpenter. He actually used a sheet of MDF, and some 1x4s cut in half to create the mirror frames. Then we had our painter spray them black when he was spraying the interior doors. After we installed the frames on the wall, the mirror company measured and installed a custom mirror. This project allowed us to create framed mirrors that were the absolute perfect size for the space. I will certainly use this technique again for sure!

Pin your favorite interior design ideas and have a good time, everyone!

Two-toned Kitchen
The kitchen epitomizes sophisticated and chic farmhouse. The hood is the focal point as you walk into the kitchen.
Paint Color
Trim Color – Benjamin Moore’s Simply White.
Rug
Rug in kitchen – ALL TIME FAVORITE! – best investment ever! Rejuvenation 5×8. – Julie Howard (interior designer).

Black Kitchen Cabinet Paint Color: Benjamin Moore 2132-10 Black.
Dishwasher: Whirlpool – I actually have this dishwasher at home and I love it! It’s super quiet and cleans really well.

Japanese Influenced Interiors – A World Of Inspiration
Japanese Influenced Interiors – A World Of Inspiration
Interiors
Lauren Li
Amber Road designed a Japanese-inspired café called New Editions and incorporated ‘zaisu’: Japanese seating typified as a chair with no legs. Custom versions were upholstered in linen and featured the typical ‘sashiko’ stitching. Photo – Prue Ruscoe.
From Belgium to California, and right here in Australia, Japanese design has made a big impression.
I am an interior designer, not a Japanese design expert, but like a lot of us, I’ve visited this magical country, and I found it to be instantly captivating on so many levels. This feature won’t delve into what ‘true’ Japanese design is, but rather, will touch on the ways Japanese style has influenced a whole range of aesthetics globally.
While Japan might be recognised for ‘zen’ minimalism – think pristine spaces and glass elements that make up a house by SANAA or the bare concrete made famous by Tadao Ando – there are so many diverse Japanese interiors that I wouldn’t necessarily describe as minimalist. I’m very much drawn to more eclectic Japanese spaces, that are layered with texture, plants and meaningful objects.
This got me thinking about the paradox between how we imagine stereotypical Japanese minimalism, and then what you actually encounter when visiting Japan: a 100 yen store on every street corner, or at least a sublimely tasteful Muji! It seems to me that the Japanese appreciate minimal spaces, but also love to consume. Uh oh, Marie Kondo!
Inside Sydney’s New Editions cafe, by Amber Road.  Photo – Prue Ruscoe.
New Editions references traditional Japanese ideas and materials. The interior by Amber Road feature a highly textured yet all-black palette. Japanese techniques have been employed such as ‘shou sugi ban’ a traditional way to preserve timber by charring it. Photo – Prue Ruscoe.
These interiors see the ‘wabi-sabi’ philosophy interpreted by Axel Vervoordt. Photo – Jan Liegeois
Wabi-sabi
You might be surprised to know that even Kanye West (!) has been influenced by Japan throughout his career – firstly with collaborations with Takashi Murakami and recently with his brand new ‘minimal monastery’ house designed by Axel Vervoordt. This Belgian architect is known for his intensely pared back design approach, and has long been inspired by Eastern philosophies. His stunning book Wabi Inspirations, features his own Westernised version of wabi features, including peeling paint, bare boards, distressed plaster walls, and muted colours. ‘It looks poor but it’s very costly. It’s the opposite of what most people want, which is something that looks expensive but is cheap,’ Axel chuckles.
Axel’s greatest inspiration is the spirit of zen monks in Japan, who sought contentment in simplicity, purity and restraint. ‘It’s the celebration of beauty in humble things’ Let’s just let that sink in for a minute.
Simplicity, purity and restraint are values that are an antidote to our fast, frenzied consumerism, and the scrolling social media spiral in which many of us live. Kim and Kanye are the most influential celebrity couple of our time (love them or hate them) and they have bought wabi-sabi to the mainstream, by showing the world how they live in an entirely bone coloured house, void of decoration (other than some exquisite Japanese ceramic pieces – raw ceramic ‘rocks’ and vessels by Yuji Ueda) and an unbleached grand piano (a Steinway no less). Their house isn’t exactly humble, however, it is somewhat surprising to see they have rejected having ‘things’ in the pursuit of wabi-sabi. (If you haven’t already… suss their sleek new home by Axel Vervoordt here).
Courted House by Breakspear Architects. Photo – Tom Ferguson.

This house by B.E Architecture features a particularly unexpected detail in an urban property; a secluded Japanese garden with an outdoor shower. Alongside Japanese design, they channelled inspiration from Chilean landscape architect Juan Grimm and Australian gardens by Edna Walling. Photo – Peter Clarke.
BE Architects often design the landscapes for their residential projects. They feel that these gardens should invoke a sense of calm and serenity. The purpose of the gardens is to support the architecture as well as the occupants, while not making a grand statement in themselves. Photo – Peter Clarke.

Borrowed Scenery
We know that houses are seriously compact in Japan, although they still feel amazing to spend time in.
Often, this is thanks to a well-positioned window with a view to a garden, which gives an impression of more space.
To borrow scenery is an ancient technique known as ‘shakkei’, and it makes a lot of sense to employ this philosophy in our homes in Australia. A great example of this in practice are spaces by Studiofour, which have a tangible connection to the outdoors. The Melbourne-based firm believes that a strong relationship to the outdoors ‘is a pathway to human health and happiness’.

Although geographically very far from Japan, Captain Kelly’s Cottage by John Wardle Architects, also in Tasmania, references Japanese design. The walls, floor, and ceiling of the living space was crafted entirely out of Tasmanian oak, and furniture items like a writing desk and coffee table were made out of leftover materials. Materiality
Imagine visiting a construction site, taking off your boots and sliding on a pair of slippers. This is exactly what happened to me when I visited Japan to work on an interior design project for a global retailer. I’m used to dusty worksites, with Triple M blasting from a radio in the corner, but I didn’t find anything like that on the Japanese construction site that day. The boots/slipper comparison reveals a lot about the way that building is approached in Japan. I encountered the cleanest and most organised building site I have ever seen, and I began to understand that everywhere I went I was talking to craftsmen.
The Shinto belief system, indigenous to Japan, influences Japanese architecture in terms of materiality and form. Materials are treated with care and the greatest craftsmanship. Materials are most cherished in their natural form.

Bathing
Having a bath in Japan has its very own set of customs and rules.
Maybe, in the West, we’re not ready to bathe completely naked with strangers (!) however, we could learn a thing or two about the Japanese ritual of bathing – and the serene way the Japanese design their bathing spaces, with great emphasis on the bath, natural materials such as timber and stone, and natural light.

Decoration
It’s fascinating how Japan has influenced Western design for hundreds of years. Notably, designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright and William Morris found inspiration from Japan during the rise of the Arts & Crafts movement. Many Nordic designers have also found common ground in their shared appreciation for fine craftsmanship.
From nature-inspired motifs, to the use of timber cladding and black lacquer, there are countless ways that Japan has influenced design and architecture in Australia and beyond. Personally, I’m totemo grateful!
