The further I get into season 2, the more it becomes apparent to me that Mikazuki has some self-worth issues.
Insane ramblings and heavy spoilers for IBO under the cut, be warned.
He seems like the type of person who’s self-worth is defined by how useful he feels to those he cares about. His dream is to become a farmer, but despite his repeated attempts, his crops mostly just wither and die. He tries to educate himself, but he struggles more with reading and writing than other other kids. And when people point out how he’s improved, he downplays his progress. It feels like he’s kinda given up on his dream of becoming a farmer and being anything other than Tekkadan’s (Orga’s) strongest soldier.
Mika still wants to become a farmer, but he doesn’t seem to think that it’s truly feasible for him. So he leans harder into what he’s already good at: fighting. This adds an interesting element to his relationship with Kudelia. As her life’s goal is to create a world where children aren’t exploited for conflict and wars are prevented. Mika doesn’t know how he’s supposed to exist in Kudelia’s world, cause he is a direct product of the current world, where wars happen and children are raised to fight them. In Kudelia’s world, people like Mikazuki don’t exist, which leaves him in an awkward spot—at least from his pessimistic perspective.
So all of this just leads him back to Orga. His relationship with Orga is wrought with some serious codependency issues, but it’s where he feels the most useful, as he’s been Orga’s muscle for as long as they’ve known each other. Orga’s always ending up in a fight with someone too big for him and Mika’s always gonna take that person down regardless of the consequences to himself. This is their cycle and eventually it’s gonna hurt Mika in a way that will make his dream harder to achieve. But like I said, it’s where he’s the most useful and he considers himself a lost cause anyway.
I just think it’s…sad how everyone, including Orga, seems to have more faith in Mikazuki’s dream than he does.
McGillis Fareed did a lot wrong, but if you saw everything that happened with Almiria and concluded that he was the problem and not a result of the problem, you missed the point
rewatching the palisade intro amv (for my agonies) and got absolutely emotionally kneecapped by all of the ibo clips that I had forgotten were in there which does mean it's feeling normal abt ibo o' clock. rip tekkadan you would've loved millennium break
So I started watching IBO and why oh why can't I have a series with the grit and political focus of this show that treats women, the disabled, and fat people like WFM.
the one thing I'm sad about gwitch is that there were so few moments where Suletta went apeshit
like, yeah, unfiltered Permet Score 5 Calibarn vs dozens of Gundnodes and Aerial was cool too, but it would've been nice to see more of the Suletta that danced through the entirety of the Grassley team for a little bit more
Scrolling through the GWitch tag makes me realize that if Mikazuki IBO and Orga IBO had a more dynamic relationship, the show would have done numbers here.
Mikazuki loves Atra and Kudelia so much and so purely, but his life as a child soldier has left him so traumatized and emotionally stunted that he doesn’t know what to do with that love most of the time. So he’s just confused by them. Confused by what they see in him, cause he views himself as a weapon first and foremost. Everything else is just a dream he gave up on.
But that moment at the end of episode 44, I think he finally stopped trying to understand it. When confronted with a crying Atra, confessing her unconditional love for Mika and her fear of losing him, he just hugged her. He can’t understand her or Kudelia’s love for him, but he doesn’t want them to cry, so he’ll stop trying to understand and instead try to return that love.
Mika doesn’t know what he can be in a world without fighting, but he knows that they’ll accept him into their lives regardless.
Send “And Who Are You?” and I will respond with either an under-used, unfamiliar, or otherwise brand new Muse. // accepting
The boy looked up from his place on the scratchy cot he had been resting on. It was odd someone would be calling on him that he didn't know. He used his good arm, ( the left one ) to kind of push himself as much as he could on his side to see them with his good eye, blinking ( also on the left side ).
"You want to know?" He queried back in a soft voice, dark fringes falling into his face. He wished he could fully sit up, to better greet them, but his whole right side was completely useless... Unless he was hooked up to the Gundam. Sighing, he tried to half roll over, but the attempt was futile -- he should have called Eugene to haul him into a chair, but the point was moot. He'd stay where he was.
Taking a breath, he finally replied to the person standing there in the doorway. "Mikazuki Augus, a member of Tekkadan." Straight and to the point, that was how he was.
Mikazuki Augus of Sunrise's ( MOBIlE SUIT GUNDAM IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS )
The Igbo people (English: /ˈiːboʊ/ EE-boh,US also /ˈɪɡboʊ/ IG-boh; also spelled Ibo and historically also Iboe, Ebo, Eboe,Eboans,Heebo;natively Ṇ́dị́ Ìgbò) are an ethnic group in Nigeria. They are primarily found in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. A sizable Igbo population is also found in Delta and Rivers States. Ethnic Igbo populations are found in Cameroon,Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea, as migrants as well as outside Africa. There has been much speculation about the origins of the Igbo people, which are largely unknown.Geographically, the Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River—an eastern (which is the larger of the two) and a western section. The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.
the year is 20XX. every person on earth has a toskarinlike account. the only mediator, toskarin prime, has long since died from accidentally spilling a packet of the latest 16x Spicy Reaper Buldak ramen into her bath while she was typing up her spirited defense of how the latest IBO season 3 was an underrated masterpiece that "was totally the fate/hollow ataraxia of Gundam". while people pretend to be cordial on the surface, every interaction is laced with subterfuge as people try desperately to dig up other toskarin's identities while hiding their own. the topic on everyone's minds is whether to call this situation Among Us or Mafia; while Among Us is the easy joke to make, it doesn't really fit gameplay wise. mafia? an extended version of clue? a really avant-garde 5E hack? the debate rages on.
I was initially disappointed in the lack of a Sulemio kiss, but 4 days later I actually find myself enjoying this scene more than perhaps any kiss in fiction (Except maybe bumblby for pure sentimental value reasons).
On first watch I actually found Miorine's expressions of horror and despair when she thought Suletta was dead to be quite silly, but I quickly realized it really shows how hard the concept breaks her when you see her professional persona just shatter and she loses all control of her emotions.
Keep in mind that Suletta was the first person to treat her as a person and not an object presumably since the death of her mother. That was enough for Miorine to throw away the chance to escape the prison that was the school after knowing Suletta for one day. Of course after all the time they spent together and all the things they did for each other she can't handle the idea that she's gone.
What really gets me is her colliding their helmets together, seemingly trying irrationally and desperately to touch the woman she loves through their normal suits and the vaccum of space. I've seen people interpret this moment as her actually trying to kiss Suletta, and if that's the intended case then it's a whole other level of heartwarming and heartbreaking how much she loves her and can't take losing her.
Presentation-wise obviously the choice to cut all sound fantastic, but I also love Suletta's face being almost entirely hidden behind the visor (For whatever in-universe reason), which really makes her look lifeless.
Suletta regaining consciousness and Miorine's joy in response is also great but the heartbreak that comes before it is what really makes this one of the most romantic scenes I've ever watched. Bonus points for her smile also being exaggeratedly expressive because again it shows that she's not trying to keep up an appearance and this is just raw emotion.
I still wanna see that wedding though. Come on Sunrise, give us some official art at least!
Also I made an edit in which this show ends as tragically as those particularly edgy Gundam fans were expecting:
