Peter Tork and June Millington (one of the founders of the rock group Fanny), 2012.
Janis Ian and June Millington on Peter...
“In mourning for Peter Tork, one of the kindest people I’ve ever known, who was so gracious and so good to me when I was starting out. It’s testimony to the man that his family asks donations to be made to Institute for the Musical Arts, founded by June Millington and Ann Hackler to support women and girls in music. Lovely man, and a sad day to know he’s gone.” - Janis Ian, Facebook, February 22, 2019
“Thank you Peter Tork and family for your incredibly powerful gesture in suggesting that people make a donation to IMA’s ‘In the Names of Our Mothers’ fund, in support women and girls in music. Especially in these times, so meaningful ~ you will be remembered here for generations! Thing is, you’ve been such a good friend to me (us) over the years, and continue to give. That is a true testament to your soul, and your spirit. Love you always, xx June” - June Millington, Facebook, February 23, 2019
“I met him [Peter] here in Massachusetts through our really great friend Leah Kunkel. […] And they were really good friends since Peter and John Sebastian and Leah, Mama Cass… were in the Village […] And Peter did a benefit for us once […], for IMA. […] And he did record here as well. […] Peter was here a few months before he died, he came to actually record that last song that he put out with The Monkees [‘Angels We Have Heard On High,’ from Christmas Party; the instrumental track, featuring Peter on banjo, was originally from A Beachwood Christmas, 2003]. […] I wish I could have recorded him for my podcast because he told me a few stories which I love so much. [...] He played a great piano, which I didn’t know until the last time he was here. He swung by the piano and he — even though he was sick and he didn’t have much energy — he sat down and he played some brilliant classical piece. I’m like, ‘Peter, I didn’t know you played the piano!’ And he said, ‘Oh. Yeah.’ And I said, ‘How did that come about?’ He said, ‘Oh, I took lessons.’ So his parents definitely wanted him to be, shall we say, cultured, and have… you know, to play piano, the have a college degree and all of that. […] He was such a smart guy, he was so funny, he was so funny, he would be quipping all the time, you know. And it was, the last couple of years were a little bit of a slog for him because the cancer was coming back and it was really trying to get him. But he — he kept his humor intact the whole time. He was really a very generous, and he was a super-funny guy. That’s my biggest impression of him, is how giving he was. And he wanted to support IMA, the Institute for the Musical Arts, which is a nonprofit that supports women and girls in music by passing on what we know. So we do rock ‘n’ roll girls camp […], lessons — everything is being passed on to future generations. So it’s the only organization of its kind in the world where we are really hands on passing it on. And he just loved that. Like, he sent his daughter here — his wife had, you know, had a daughter, so they sent her here to one of our rock ‘n’ roll girl camps. So he put his money and his time where his mouth was, you know. […] So he was always trying to think of ways that he could help. He recorded here. You know, as I said, he was super-generous. He had a heart of gold, I gotta say. Super heart of gold. And he and Leah remained really good friends, really good friends until, you know, the last days. […] He was so smart. He was on top of current affairs, you know; he had so many jokes at the top of his fingers. […] He was a super-talented guy. […] Go to IMA dot org to take a look at this place. Peter realized the value. He loved passing it on. And he loved being around women and working with women, there’s no, you know (laughs), there’s no other way I could say it: he loved women. And he wanted to help, you know. And he let us know that, boy, he wanted to help and he did help.” - Plastic EP, 2021

Those in italics have five or more pieces of usable visual, written, or audio propaganda already. If you have any visuals like photos or videos, or if you have something to say in words, submit it to this blog before round one begins on June 25th!
If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.

i’m constantly reminded of mortality, and it doesn’t bother me the way you’d think
repost from that time i deleted an article i spent 4 days on T-T actual post this time since i somehow posted it privately yesterday 😭
---
Hi, I’m Questioning. And I like to waste my life away dedicate my free time to random hobbies that catch my hyperfixation interest on the fly. Currently, I’ve returned to something most important. Updating the encyclopedia-esque database of AlternativeTo.net. o_o
Tumblr media
Let me finish.
See, I started exploring the world of Visual Novel (VN) makers, which led to me discovering the world of Interactive Fiction (IF)–their predecessor afaic. And that’s where it got strange. What I’ve found is interesting developments in terms of innovation and such. Like Undum (image)–“a game framework for building a sophisticated form of hypertext interactive fiction” according to its GitHub. IFWiki calls it “an authoring system for CYOA-style stories playable on web browsers.” It was created by I.D. Millington in 2009, released in 2010, had returned in 2018, and would’ve changed the IF genre (kinda like Twine did) if not for how hard it was to get into.
Undum’s flexibility and power have made it the engine that drove some of the most significant works in IF (The Play, Almost Goodbye). But it has always been relatively inaccessible. Undum is not the system of choice for writing straightforward hypertext games; it’s a challenging system to learn and use that demands the author build their own engine on top of it to drive their game logic. Consider Raconteur for “Undum with batteries included.” -Bruno Dias (x)
Enter Raconteur, “a friendlier way to write Undum hypertext fiction” that was announced by Bruno Dias in 2015. More accurately described as “a library of Undum tools that can get someone writing their story quickly.” Here’s the thing about the “library of Undum tools” part: Undum did not come prepackaged with any… even though they were required to write your game,…😐 which “meant doing a lot of your own tooling.” 😑
Yeah, no surprise it won the award for Best Technological Development in XYZZY Awards 2015.
But hold up, somethin’ ain’t right…
Undum’s only got 21 games on IFDB.org and Raconteur’s got 4… with 1 overlap with Undum. 😐
So~… wth?
Well, someone else had a similar question on intfiction.org in March and got Josh Grams’ opinion on it: JavaScript.
Tumblr media
🤷🏿‍♂️
So even though Undum was designed as the visual version of bookbinding and with the specific goals “aesthetic” & “technical” in mind, shit’s too intimidating compared to alternatives.
I hoped [writing Undum in JavaScript] would make it accessible for a wider range of dabblers, requiring transferable skills rather than learning a new language. It also made it achievable to write and document over a few weekends: I didn’t have to worry about parsing, or creating a complete runtime. But the best benefit, and in some ways the one least exploited in practice, is the ability to use Undum as part of a bigger game. I imagined a strategy game with CYOA elements, or a piece of interactive fiction using natural language generation to be different each time. -Ian Millington (x)
And here’s~ where it gets a bit fucked.
Remember the other person who had a similar question–J. J. Guest? Well, they ended their post with “Was it simply superseded by Ink / Inky?”
Tumblr media
Let’s keep this simple:
Ink [image] is the core narrative engine itself, written in C#. It includes the code for the compiler. If you’re not technical, you don’t need to worry about this. Inky [image] is our ink editor, which is a text editor with support for playing as you write. If you’re just starting out with ink, this is all you need. inkle is the game development studio that created ink (x)
So it’s “a narrative scripting language for games” and yet another CYOA maker. Why do I bring them up? Well, Inkle (the company) “was founded in 2011 by two Cambridge game developers [Joseph Humfrey & Jon Ingold] with a passion for storytelling and beautiful design” (x). They started off with their unique “inklebook” format, which had an early prototype game in ~2008 that Jon described as
an iPad-based choice-driven story made of ‘pages’ which stitched together into a single flow via frequent choice points. It was a lovely UI for a choice-based game, even in prototype form, and we had a strong scripting language underneath it – the first version of ink. (x)
Tumblr media
In January of 2012, they released “a web-tool for writing and reading simple interactive stories” called inklewriter. Joseph described it as “a simpler subset of the inklebook format” (x) and admitted “inklewriter was partly born out of the surprise that there isn’t anything out there for quickly and easily writing non-linearly.” (x)
After already having “moved away from developing inklewriter for a long time,” it went “permanent beta” in September of 2017 due to “increasing frequency of persistent bug-reports.” Sad news considering the statement “we’ve had hundreds of thousands of stories created by hundreds of thousands of users; we’ve won awards from school and library associations; and hopefully we’ve helped kickstart a few interactive writers careers” (x). And since writers (who became aware in time) were able to “rescue” their story from the bugs and potential wipeout with a simple Save Page As, it was probably a bit less heartbreaking when inkle revealed less than a year later that inklewriter would be shutting down completely in August of 2018. Seemingly because “it’s real work to fix the issues that arise” with the constant browser changes. 😐
Tumblr media
Only 7 months later, it returned in March of 2019. Stable, still free, and now open-source after developers in the open-source community “produced a full port of inklewriter to modern web-tech.” 🥳 Writers needed to make new accounts and import their stories to the new database, but that was it. And since the legacy version was (and is) still around, they could do it pretty quickly. (x)
But where dahell was I going with this? Let me tell you about the original connection first: Unity Integration.
The [ink-unity-integration] plugin provides you with everything you need to get started with ink in Unity. It automatically recompiles ink files as you edit them, and even comes with a simple previewer that lets you play stories directly within the Editor, without writing a line of code. (x)
Remember Ian Millington’s statement from awhile ago? “But the best benefit, and in some ways the one least exploited in practice, is the ability to use Undum as part of a bigger game. I imagined a strategy game with CYOA elements, or a piece of interactive fiction using natural language generation to be different each time.” (x)
Well,… Stoic Studio (announced that they) did it in January 2013 when they used inklewriter for The Banner Saga. Though, inkle recommends you use their ink scripting language instead for Unity projects. 🤷🏿‍♀️ A scripting language that was ported to JavaScript in May of 2016, btw. The port (inkjs) having its latest release just 6 freaking days ago while Undum and Raconteur had their last GitHub edits in 2018 & 2020 respectively.
Either way, Ian’s imagination of “a strategy game with CYOA elements” happened… with another mofo’s software. 😐
And what’s that? I left something out?
I left working on Undum to develop Varytale, a short lived commercial IF endeavour that shared a lot of the same aesthetic and narrative structure. And then I retired, and it lay fallow, aside from email help requests that still drip into my inbox. -Ian Millington (x)
Tumblr media
Let’s see what IFWiki says about this endeavor:
Varytale was a platform for authoring and publishing browser-based CYOA, created by Ian Millington and Alexis Kennedy; it occupied a point somewhere between Undum and StoryNexus [a comparatively mostly defunct endeavor from 2012]. The Varytale website was live from approximately 2011 to 2015. The first posts on Varytale’s blog appeared in June 2011. On March 7, 2014, Varytale posted a comment on the Varytale Facebook page saying, “The project is stalled, due to key people leaving the project. So there’s no news, and I’m not sure if or when there will be.” The last Wayback Machine snapshot of www.varytale.com/books was taken in September 2015. (x)
On its May of 2012 public beta announcement on FailbetterGames website, something slightly poignant was said.
But the technology is great [seriously] - it’s easily the most flexible and powerful tool of its kind, and it’ll be fascinating to see what people can do with it once the writers’ programme opens up. And as it happens, Jon Ingold / Joseph Humfrey’s very elegant inklewriter has also just gone live [4 months prior]. (…) …[inklewriter] covers some of the same territory as Varytale, but it’s (by design) simpler in concept and execution. (x)
Life is truly cruel.
If you check the archive from possibly days before its shut down in September of 2015, you’ll see 4 official books (Bee, Fighting, How To Read, Hymn & Shanty) and 3 User Published Books (London Road, Sixth Tower, Tillinghast). That’s 7… 7 books. 😐
But it’s not that sad. According to the Varytale blog’s 2nd to last post (in June of 2012), “we passed 50,000 reads across the seven books currently on our reader’s beta.” This was perhaps a full week after they released the floodgates and actually allowed people to start readin’. Das alot to me. They clearly succeeded in “building a platform for authors to write great books, and for publishers to publish them.” Even built a whole-ass “system that does generative design,” creating “artwork based on the author’s choice of patterned design or photograph” (x). Or, as we’d quickly say 12 years later, some AI shit.
So wut 👏🏿 in da fuq 👏🏿
Tumblr media
Why’d they never get past the 7 book mark in the 2 years between Reader’s Beta and project stallation? Well,… there’s a hint at the end of that 2012 blog post: “We have a queue of people wanting to write content, who are been added a few at a time. So lots of hard work in the beta still to go.” hm~ 🤔
If The Way Back Machine had archives past January of 2013, we’d definitely know more, but this is it (i ain’t diggin’ a wider hole at this point). And what is it? I think it’s a matter of workload. Too much for too few people who had however much goin’ on in their lives. Remember much earlier this bit from IFWiki?
On March 7, 2014, Varytale posted a comment on the Varytale Facebook page saying, “The project is stalled, due to key people leaving the project. (x)
Maybe things weren’t smooth enough for awhile. Maybe it was something else for those 2 years prior. 🤷🏿‍♂️ And you know… the end of Emily Short’s blog post Writing for Varytale might hold the answer.
There are still some challenges about using the Varytale system, though it’s evolved tremendously over the course of beta. One of the biggest authorial challenges is that, while there’s the awesome structure tool shown above for looking at branching structure inside a storylet, it can be considerably more challenging to get a view of what’s going on at the macro level. And I’m not even sure what the tool for this ought to look like. The strength of storylets is that they can affect which other ones pop up in a fairly freeform way, and one can affect another (via their shared stat use) without explicit logic in either. But that’s also what makes it really hard to graph how they will act. Most of the bugs that arose in Bee were related to this issue of envisioning the total structure of the work and detecting storylets that were going to break that structure. (x)
So in this case aswell, the innovations of Ian’s Varytale make it… (a bit) intimidating to work with. 😑Whether or not this difficulty was ever ironed out post-beta is unknown to me, especially considering the end of Ian’s thankful response to Tom H.’s suggestion for fixing the macro level problem: “When will I get chance to code it? That’s a whole other matter!”
…hm~
And on the same post lies magnus4444’s statement that “There isn’t a lot of documentation out there yet on the implementation of more advanced effects but, on the plus side, Ian is generous with advice and tips.”
🤷🏿‍♀️
So wtf do we have here. Effectively two developers (i’m simplifying it; fight me) who 1) made a CYOA maker (Undum & inklewriter) for very similar reasons, 2) put development aside to focus on other CYOA makers (Varytale & Inky), 3) had their neglected work taken up by open-source developers for the good of everyone, and 4) reaped the benefit of the other’s labor in some way. Now, here’s where we’re back to the sad part. Inkle’s version of the tale is the American Dream ™. Inklewriter was beloved by many and had mainstream success. Ian’s version is the harsh American Reality. Undum only bore 24+ games over the course of its 13 year existence on the internet and in the world of IF. And if a single person’s opinion is to be taken as fact… then the reason was simple: shit wasn’t easy to pickup. And thus, regardless of Ian & Bruno’s efforts, it (at this rate) is bound to become an obscure software regardless of its potential. All while Varytale remains gone and Inky (released in June of 2016) is still goin’ strong with 160+ games released using its Ink language/engine.
Which brings me back to the matter…
i’m constantly reminded of [my] mortality

My OCs: A Masterlist
So… yeah. Due to a recent rash of followings and subsequent questions about my WIPs that I don’t have the time to do detailed posts to answer currently, I’ve decided to do a master list of my more important OCs and which story they belong to for people to reference (or to understand me were I to reference them). My writblr intro has short blurbs about all of these stories and I DO intend to do detailed posts for each WIP eventually. This is just until I get there. May or may not be edited later (depending on time/story changes/if I remember to or not).
Exile
Xavier Sutcliffe (aka Ze): First main character (and first one we are introduced to) in Exile. Brother of Gabriella. Apprentice healer to Hagan Decker. His mission is the one that starts the story and sets everything into motion.
Gabriella Sutcliffe (aka Gabby): Second main character of Exile, and subsequently the second we meet. Younger sister of Ze. Works in the castle kitchen and lives on her own since their father died.
Christopher Remington (aka Chris): Third main character of Exile. Crown Prince/heir of Feareadale, the kingdom both Gabby and Ze were born in (and the land the Ze is exiled from). Is personally invested in the mission due to his relationships and knowledge of the other characters, including…
Maximilian Lockwood (aka Max): Fourth main character of Exile. Crown Prince/heir to the kingdom of Aexawar before it was invaded and usurped by Millington. Obviously invested because his family was lost and kingdom was usurped, and he wants it back, at all costs.
Little Red
Samantha (aka Sammy or Red): First main character of Little Red. A young girl who moves in to town and whose troubled life became of personal interest to a couple of young adults who decide to take notice.
Tyler Mitchell: Second main character of Little Red. Male one of said teenagers who takes notice. Takes a little longer than his girlfriend to catch on, but makes the lasting impact in the long run when he finally does, taking Sammy under his wing like the little sister he never had.
Miranda: Side but important character in Little Red. Tyler’s girlfriend. Lives in the house next to the one Sammy’s family moves in to. Immediately takes an interest in the odd young girl and her well-being and is the one who entices Tyler to take action.
(Untitled) Time Travel Story
AJ: The main character of TTS. Time traveler and runaway extraordinaire. Hops through time from place to place, trying to stay away from the man who murdered her mother and unravel the mysteries as to why and how that night actually happened.
Ian: Her love interest with undetermined loyalties.
Undercover Disaster
Emma Winters: First major character of UD. College student and daughter of a high ranking cop. After an accidental showcase of her skills in front of her father’s boss while on vacation, she gets sent deep undercover to try to bring down an infamous criminal before he can pull off his biggest heist yet.
Jason Grey: Second major character of UD. The mysterious criminal whose organization she is sent to infiltrate.

Famoso mento soffi: Antrace chitarrista Scott Ian
Kanye West, Idris Elba, Il Rock, Brad Pitt, Brad Paisley, Leonardo DiCaprio, e in Comune hanno tutti indossato cerchio barbe—così Guy Fieri.
Famoso cerchio barbe: Guy Fieri, Kanye West, Idris Elba, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Frederick Douglass, Comune, Manny Pacquiao, Brad Pitt, Brad Paisley, Jim Roma, etc.
Famoso disconnesso pizzetti: Johnny Depp, Tupac, Adam Driver, John Paul White, Michael B. Jordan
Famoso Van Dykes: Anthony Van Dyck, Wild Buffalo Bill Cody, Carlo I, Pierce Brosnan
Famoso Anchor Barbe: David Beckham, Tony Stark
Famoso Trasandato Capre: Tom Hardy, Chris Millington
Krebs era pigro, demotivati, poco intelligente, e usato parole come “mi piace” e “daddy-o”.

EastEnders and its axing of young actors/characters...
So if a character is between the ages of 15-24 in EastEnders, they don’t stand much of staying in the show for long. That’s what seems to be happening these days, and it doesn’t matter how long they’ve been in the show, what family they’re part of, how good their character is, or their potential.
Yesterday it came out that Abi and Lauren would be written out, and lots of young actors have been axed in recent years. Young actors are actually more likely to leave as well, so when you couple that with them axing them, you don’t end up with your originals left. Forgetting Lauren and Abi, this is who we’ll be left with: Ben Bex Louise Whitney* Jay Johnny Shakil Keegan Travis Josh Keanu Bernadette * Whitney’s 25 in a few months and she hangs around with more older characters anyway, so to be honest I wouldn’t really count her. In terms of character introduction, 5 of those have only been introduced this year. Shakil’s been there just over a year, Johnny was only reintroduced over a year ago, Louise reintroduced less than 2 years ago, and Bex has only really started having storylines in the last year. So who the young cast were this time last year was very different, and 3 years ago, even more different.
Young characters are needed to build the future family generations, like Sonia, Martin, Stacey, Ian, Sharon, Michelle and Robbie are currently doing for us. 2/3 years ago they seemed to have decided to start doing away with a lot of their young characters, without giving the majority of them a proper chance. I know Sonia, Martin, Stacey, Sharon, Michelle and Robbie have all left in the past – BUT, bar Robbie, that was all the actors’ choices, and they all stayed at least 6 years in their original stints. It feel likes Lucy’s death seems to have been the catalyst for this getting rid of young actors/ruining their chances to be long-term.
I didn’t agree with the Lucy storyline at first, but when it started I began to, and I liked it – until they revealed her killer. I won’t go into detail here (I wrote a whole blog on it), but I didn’t think Bobby made sense. I still don’t, and now I disagree even more with the storyline because with the way they ran the storyline, Bobby ending up leaving. He had to, they had turned him psycho. Now I don’t think they had to turn him psycho, they could have just left it a seemingly accident. But they did… and with Peter already gone, and Lucy dead, they got rid of a potential 15-24 year old character. I know Bobby will be able to return after his prison sentence, but he’s probably always going to have a psycho personality, meaning he will never last long. It’s the same with Steven – they had him go psycho 10 years ago, he returned normal, but they made him psycho again. Now Steven is just a few years too old to fit the young character bracket, but he did interact with a few young characters, and they’ve killed him off now. I don’t feel there was much more for him as he went too psycho this time, so don’t necessarily agree with killing him off, but now Ian has 2 dead children. And I just don’t see Bobby having a permanent future in the show, and they really didn’t need to make him psycho as Ian already had a psycho child. Although the Steven death wasn’t part of the Lucy thing, Cindy and Liam’s departures were. Well, they chose for it to be, as Cindy threatened to reveal it. I don’t see why they even had Cindy leave, there was no actual need for it – she’d been in the show for less than 2 years, and there was plenty they could have done with her. Her and Liam were good together, although Liam’s immediate family had left (bar Whitney), they could have had him as part of the Beales. But the Beales in particular just don’t seem to stand a chance with their kids these years. I know they couldn’t predict the actor playing Peter leaving, but that just goes to show – why get rid of your young cast when it’s likely a fair amount of them will leave anyway? The Cindy exit was after the Peter exit, it never made sense to me. TJ was also a 15-24 year character who left, he was the father of Cindy’s baby. That was a understandable axing – they axed the whole family, the actress playing Bianca was leaving and the family’s connection really was with her. I don’t think they ever quite gelled in the soap, though TJ could have been a potential reintroduction when he was older if Cindy had still been around. There have been other axings I’ve agreed with – Dexter, for example, he wasn’t a very good character and his parents had left so. Lola, I did not – they could have explored her with Jay, she had Billy, and they could have explored her as a young mother more. It seems to be what they do with the young single mum characters actually - axe them: Lola, Cindy, now Lauren, and technically Abi as she is a mother to be. Throwing it back 10 years, young mum Demi Miller. I can’t find someone in the last 10 years whose been a young single mum and stayed – the majority have been axed, others have left. I do wonder if Stacey would have been axed - the actress left soon after Stacey gave birth, but by the time she came back she was in the ‘older’ category.
The actors playing Nancy and Tamwar both chose to leave. Tamwar had a good run, but Nancy was only in the show just over 2 years. The actor playing Fatboy did not – but I didn’t disagree with the decision, he lasted a lot longer than expected, and he hadn’t had much of an impact on the show. I completely disagree with them killing him off though, he was essentially a comedy character, and he died in such a horrific way. With the actor playing Paul, it wasn’t his decision. I was never a fan of the character, and he didn’t have much of an impact really. But the decision to kill him off was interesting – Pam and Les had lost their son and now their grandson; Ben was losing his partner so young, a partner he’d not long been public with; the fact it was a homophobic attack, which I felt was an important issue to raise. With this axing, as the exit was so interesting, I actually agree with it. We also had the actor playing Kyle leave, again not his decision. I liked Stacey having family, but with all the other Slaters gone it now feels like that era has passed really, like she’s a Fowler now. To be honest this is a good idea, because I don’t see them ever getting rid of Stacey, and the Fowler’s are one of the original families. We lastly have Lee, who again did not choose to leave, but it was a decision I agreed with. I just was never really a fan – I never really saw the need to have another Carter child, Johnny and Nancy were enough. To be honest, I think Mick and Linda can just work by themselves. I’d rather Johnny go than Lauren and Abi, though I do get with the new characters they’re giving them time. I guess going on the ones who have been there more than a year, if they’re looking to cut down on young characters then I’d go with the ones playing Johnny and Shakil, just because I don’t feel there’s that much you can do with them. Although Travis and Josh are apparently regulars, I don’t think either of them are going to be long-term. To be honest, on the current young actors list the only ‘stars’ I see really are Bex, Louise and Jay. The newer characters may start to shine don’t get me wrong, but Lauren and Abi already were. And Max will still be there, and so will Dot and Jack. The Brannings were massive about 5 years ago, and to be honest they probably did need reducing, but now there’s barely any left, and I think they need Lauren and Abi. Both actresses have proved their loyalty, and lasted long-term. All these new young characters may not – although of my list of 14 young exits over the last 3ish years, only 3 actually chose to leave, and 2 of them hadn’t been in it long. I have to wonder if the reason why it’s not more is because they’re axing them before they have a chance to think about new roles, I mean look at the list: only 3 of them were there more than a few years, and to be honest Liam really was only a couple of years into having storylines of his own so I’d say he was more like 2 years than 7, same with Bobby.
Danny-Boy Hatchard as Lee – 3 years Riley Carter Millington as Kyle – 1 year Jonny Labey as Paul – 1 year Eliot Carrington as Bobby – Less than 2 years Ricky Norwood as Fatboy – 6 years Mimi Keene as Cindy – 2 years
James Forde as Liam – 2 years having storylines Danielle Harold as Lola – 4 years Hetti Bywater as Lucy – 2 years George Sargeant as TJ – Less than a year Khali Best as Dexter – 2 years So yeah I’m not happy with them axing Lauren and Abi, I feel like they’re introducing young characters just to axe them later. Especially when these characters are needed to build up key families, it’s a bit frustrating. Bobby, Cindy, Lucy – the Beales; Liam, Abi, Lauren – the Brannings; Lola – the Mitchells. I know we have Bex for the Fowlers/Brannings, and Louise for the Mitchells – but it just feels they kind of thought we got rid of Lola so let’s bring in Louise; let’s have Bex for the Brannings. I think they’re both great, and are part of key families too, BUT neither have been it the show all that long, they could decide to leave in a couple of years time. But Lola, Lauren and Abi showed their loyalty. To be honest I see Bex or Louise getting pregnant, and then them writing them out… Gahh.
Anyway that’s just how I feel. Hopefully they won’t kill off Lauren and Abi, like they did with Ronnie and Roxy. And yup, I completely disagreed with that decision too.

Before we begin into the episode proper, let me set the scene as it were and talk a little backstory here, a little context there, that sort of thing.
For me, though I love all the incarnations of the Doctor, the 7th is kind of low on the list of faves. This has nothing to do with looks or even attitude because I think Sylvester McCoy did an excellent job with what he was given and I really like the crafty, cold persona of the Doctor. This is the face that holds himself back the most. The calculating schemer. The one who dials back his own self to see how others reveal themselves. It’s actually really interesting.
But I generally find the episodes fairly boring. Granted, I’ve only watched them once, but there seems to be a lot of filler and a lot of cheese going on. Given that Who went on hiatus after this season until the early aughts (barring the terrible, wonderful, amazing 8th Doctor Movie which I will discuss one day because that? /kisses fingers) I wonder if some people just stopped caring.
We’ll see how I feel after however. As I haven’t watched this episode in a long time and don’t remember much about it at all. |D
Now that the personal stuff is out of the way, let’s look at some context about the episode itself... Things to take note of, watch out for, that sort of thing.
All my facts are based off of the Doctor Who Wiki but if there’s anything else interesting that you feel I’ve missed, feel free to chime in!
The most interesting tidbit of information comes in regards to this...
Writer Ian Briggs based the character of Dr Judson on Alan Turing. In an interview for the DVD release of this story, Briggs said that since at that time it was not considered appropriate to depict a character's struggle with homosexuality in a family programme, he transformed Turing's frustration at being unable to express his true sexual identity into Judson's frustration at being disabled.
In the same interview, Briggs stated that he intended to suggest that both Judson and Millington were gay and had a shared past, although this was not realised in the finished programme.
Now this really intrigues me. Despite what some contemporary episodes would have you believe, Doctor Who has always been a bit progressive for its time. Granted it’s been fairly problematic too, as is everything. But I find it interesting that the desire to tell this kind of story is there.
I don’t think we can get anything of this out of the episode itself. (though I don’t know) Like, for instance, to say that this or that is subtext of something or other. But it’s still interesting and something to keep in mind.
Also, there is an Eighth Doctor Novel: The Turing Test wherein 8, suffering somewhat from amnesia (as he does) meets Turing who has a super crush on 8. Mind you, half the universe has a super crush on 8 so this isn’t surprising.
Another interesting factoid:
This story is the second in what some have called the "Ace Trilogy", a three-story arc that explores elements of Ace's past before she met the Doctor. This was not an intentional trilogy, since Fenric was originally intended to start the season and be followed by Battlefield, Survival and then Ghost Light. Fenric was moved to third in the season because its horror themes were seen as more fitting for airing in October.
I remember very little about Ace as a character other than the basics and that I liked her, so we’ll definitely be on the lookout for what this episode says about her; despite the somewhat borked airing order.
That out of the way!
Without further ado, let’s dive into: The Curse of Fenric
