đŁď¸ IVF for me, but not for thee

It's been a really rough week for Republicans who hate reproductive rights, and Republican Rep. Michelle Steel of California is no exception.
âAs someone who struggled to get pregnant, I believe all life is a gift. IVF allowed me, as it has so many others, to start my family,â she tweeted Thursday. âI believe there is nothing more pro-life than helping families have children, and I do not support federal restrictions on IVF.â
Great! Just one teeny tiny little problem with that, as Inside Elections editor Jacob Rubashkin noted: Steel actually does support federal restrictions. Steel is one of the co-sponsors of the Life at Conception Act, a House bill that âdeclares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual comes into being.â
And as Rubashkin points out, there is no carveout in the bill for in vitro fertilization. Oops!

Biden condemns Alabama courtâs IVF ruling while Republicans struggle to articulate a position
President Biden made an important point on Thursday: The horrific decision by the Alabama Supreme Court effectively outlawing in vitro fertilization is âa direct resultâ of the overruling of Roe v. Wadeâwhich Trump claims as his signature achievement! See HuffPo, Biden Calls Alabama Court's IVF Ruling A 'Direct Result' Of Roe Falling.
Biden issued a statement that said,
Today, in 2024 in America, women are being turned away from emergency rooms and forced to travel hundreds of miles for health care, while doctors fear prosecution for providing an abortion. And now, a court in Alabama put access to some fertility treatments at risk for families who are desperately trying to get pregnant. The disregard for womenâs ability to make these decisions for themselves and their families is outrageous and unacceptable. I know that folks are worried about what theyâre seeing happening to women all across America. I am too. Weâre fighting for the freedom of women, for families, and for doctors who care for these women. And we wonât stop until we restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law for all women in every state.
Meanwhile, Nikki Haley tried to walk back her initial comments supporting the rationale of the ruling (that âembryos are babiesâ). Other GOP politicians babbled nonsense statements and then fled from reporters. Senator Tommy Tubervilleâfrom Alabamaâavoided questions by saying, âhe has not yet seen the decision,ââwhich is available to anyone with a computer, a phone, or a quarter to buy a newspaper. See NBC News, Sen. Tommy Tuberville struggles to answer questions on Alabama's IVF ruling.
The issue is a âlose-lose-loseâ situation for Republicans.
First, the decision itself is hugely unpopular without regard to the overruling of Roe v. Wade. But there is no way to back away from the decision without rejecting a central tenant of the anti-choice movementâthat human life begins at conception.
Second, it is also a reminder that Trump is responsible for the overruling of Roe v. Wade and the downstream consequences that are now stigmatizing and afflicting women across America. Trump reportedly believes (privately) that right-wing religious fundamentalists have gone too far in implementing the Dobbs decision. If Trump attempts to âreasonâ with those supporters, he will discover that âreasonâ has nothing to do with religious fundamentalism. So, Trump will either bob and weave to avoid taking a firm position, or he will anger a large part of his base by walking away from their underlying religious principles.
Finally, this is an issue of vital interest to tens of millions of young American women and men who may be on the other side of the abortion issue from Joe Biden. Being the object of the GOPâs moral condemnation (or criminalization) of efforts to overcome infertility must be maddening. They may not vote for Joe Biden, but they may also not vote for Donald Trump. In a closely divided electorate, small changes at the margin are all we need to win.

Frozen Embryo Transfer vs. Fresh Embryo Transfer: Which Is Better?
When undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), one crucial decision patients and doctors must make is whether to proceed with a Fresh Embryo Transfer (FET) or a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET). Both approaches have their own advantages and potential drawbacks, making it essential to understand the differences before making a choice. In this blog, we will explore both methods, their success rates, benefits, and potential risks to determine which might be the better option for you. Read More about this : ivf clinic and doctor
Understanding Fresh and Frozen Embryo Transfers
What is Fresh Embryo Transfer?
Fresh Embryo Transfer involves implanting an embryo into the uterus within a few days after the eggs are retrieved and fertilized. Typically, this happens on day 3 or day 5 of embryo development. Since the embryo is transferred without being frozen, it must be implanted during the same menstrual cycle in which the ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval took place.
What is Frozen Embryo Transfer?
In a Frozen Embryo Transfer, embryos are cryopreserved (frozen) and stored for future use. This process allows the womanâs body to recover from ovarian stimulation before implantation. The frozen embryos can be thawed and transferred during a later menstrual cycle, optimizing the uterine environment for implantation.
Comparing Success Rates: Which One Works Better?
Research and clinical studies have shown that Frozen Embryo Transfers often yield higher success rates than Fresh Embryo Transfers. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that frozen transfers resulted in higher pregnancy rates and lower risks of complications compared to fresh transfers. Hereâs why:
Improved Uterine Environment â Fresh transfers happen right after ovarian stimulation, which involves high levels of hormones that may affect the uterine lining's receptivity. In contrast, a frozen transfer allows the uterus to return to its natural hormonal state, improving implantation chances.
Lower Risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) â In women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or those who produce many eggs during IVF, fresh transfers increase the risk of OHSS, a painful condition caused by excess hormone production. Frozen transfers reduce this risk by allowing time for hormone levels to stabilize.
Better Embryo Selection â With frozen transfers, doctors have more time to genetically screen embryos (PGT-A/PGS testing) and select the healthiest ones, increasing the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.
Higher Live Birth Rates â Several studies suggest that frozen embryos have higher implantation and live birth rates compared to fresh embryos, particularly in women with high ovarian response.
Advantages of Fresh Embryo Transfer
Despite the benefits of frozen transfers, fresh embryo transfers also have some advantages:
Shorter Treatment Timeline â Since the embryo is transferred immediately, the overall IVF process is shorter, which may reduce the emotional and financial burden.
No Risk of Embryo Freezing Damage â Although modern freezing techniques like vitrification have improved embryo survival rates, some embryos may not survive the thawing process.
Preferred for Certain Patients â Women who produce fewer eggs or have a naturally receptive uterine lining may benefit more from a fresh transfer.
Advantages of Frozen Embryo Transfer
Frozen transfers have gained popularity due to the following benefits:
Higher Pregnancy Success Rates â Because the uterus is in a more natural state, implantation success rates tend to be higher.
Allows for Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A) â Frozen embryos can be tested for genetic abnormalities, increasing the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
More Flexibility â Women can plan the transfer according to their personal or medical needs without the stress of hormone-induced conditions.
Better for Women with High Ovarian Response â Those who produce many eggs and have high estrogen levels benefit from waiting before implantation.
Which One is Right for You?
Choosing between a Fresh and Frozen Embryo Transfer depends on several factors, including:
Your Age â Younger women with fewer eggs may benefit from a fresh transfer, while older women or those using donor eggs may see better results with frozen transfers.
Hormonal Response â If your hormone levels are high after stimulation, a frozen transfer may be safer.
Embryo Quality â If genetic testing is required, freezing allows time for screening.
Previous IVF Failures â If a fresh cycle has failed before, switching to frozen transfers may improve your chances.
Conclusion: Is Frozen Transfer Better Than Fresh?
While both Fresh and Frozen Embryo Transfers have their own advantages, frozen transfers have become the preferred choice for many patients due to their higher success rates, lower risk of complications, and better embryo selection. However, the best option for you will depend on your individual medical condition and fertility history. Consulting with your fertility specialist like Dr. Bhavana mittal is essential to determine the most suitable approach for your IVF journey.

A Guide to Understanding Fertility Treatments - Ottawa Fertility Centre
Navigating the journey of conception can be overwhelming, especially when faced with challenges that require fertility treatments. For many, understanding the options available is crucial. This guide explores key fertility treatments, including IVF and egg freezing, while highlighting fertility clinics in Canada as vital resources for support and care.
Understanding Fertility Challenges
Infertility affects many couples, with various factors contributing to difficulties in conceiving. Health issues, age, lifestyle choices, and genetic predispositions can all play a role. Itâs essential to consult with a healthcare provider to understand your specific situation and determine the best course of action.
Fertility Clinics in Canada
Canada is home to numerous reputable fertility clinics, offering advanced treatments and compassionate care. These clinics provide a range of services, from initial consultations and diagnostics to comprehensive treatment plans. They often feature experienced specialists who can guide individuals and couples through the complexities of fertility challenges.
When choosing a fertility clinic, consider factors such as success rates, available technologies, and patient reviews. Many clinics also offer emotional support and counseling, which can be invaluable during this stressful journey.
IVF Treatments
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the most well-known fertility treatments. During IVF, eggs are retrieved from a womanâs ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. Once embryos form, they are either transferred back into the uterus or frozen for future use.
IVF can be particularly beneficial for individuals with specific medical conditions, such as blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility. The procedure has a relatively high success rate, especially when considering advancements in technology and individualized treatment plans.
However, IVF is not without its challenges. It can be emotionally and financially taxing, and multiple cycles may be necessary to achieve a successful pregnancy. Many fertility clinics in Canada offer financial counseling to help patients navigate costs and insurance options.
Egg Freezing
Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is an increasingly popular option for women who wish to delay pregnancy for personal or professional reasons. This process involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved and frozen for future use.
Egg freezing can provide women with more control over their reproductive choices, allowing them to pursue career goals or wait for the right partner without the pressure of a ticking biological clock. Many clinics in Canada are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure the highest success rates for thawing and fertilizing frozen eggs.
Itâs important to discuss the implications of egg freezing with a healthcare provider. Factors such as age and ovarian reserve can significantly impact the success of future IVF cycles using frozen eggs.
Conclusion
Understanding fertility treatments is essential for anyone facing challenges in conceiving. With advancements in reproductive technology and the support of fertility clinics in Canada, options like IVF and egg freezing can offer hope and pathways to parenthood. Each individualâs journey is unique, and consulting with specialists can provide tailored solutions to meet specific needs.
For those interested in learning more about fertility treatments, resources and support are available at Conceive. Seeking guidance can empower individuals and couples to make informed decisions on their path to building a family.

SERIES MASTERLIST
The bedside lamp cast a soft, golden glow over the room, illuminating the quiet anguish etched into Chosoâs features. He sat on the edge of the bed, his gaze fixed on the small stick lying on the nightstand. The roomâs oppressive silence was broken only by the faint hum of the heater, struggling against the winterâs chill. Chosoâs hands trembled slightly, but he couldnât bring himself to meet your eyes. Not yet. Not while the negative result stood as a glaring reminder of another failed attempt.
You sat cross-legged on the bed, arms wrapped around your knees, the tension in the room pressing down on your chest like a weight. This wasnât the first timeânot even closeâand both of you knew it likely wouldnât be the last. Yet, the knowledge didnât dull the sting of disappointment. It never did.
âMaybe we shouldâŚâ you began, your voice a fragile tremor in the stillness.
âDonât,â Choso interrupted, his tone softer than you expected. His shoulders sagged under the invisible weight he carried, his posture speaking of defeat. Finally, he turned his gaze to you, his expression a raw mix of guilt and despair. âDonât blame yourself. This isnât your fault.â
âItâs not yours either,â you countered, your voice steadier now despite the tears pooling in your eyes. âWeâre in this together. Itâs not about fault.â
Even as you said it, you knew he wouldnât see it that way. Choso had always carried the burdens of othersâa habit formed from years of protecting his brothers, even in death. Now, with this, he felt as though he was failing at something he desperately wanted to give you: a family.
Hesitantly, he reached out, his fingers brushing against your knee. The gesture was tentative, almost apologetic, as though he doubted he deserved to touch you. You covered his hand with yours, intertwining your fingers and squeezing tightly.
âI justâŚâ Chosoâs voice broke, and he exhaled sharply, his free hand scrubbing over his face. âI donât understand. Weâve tried everything. The doctors said it could take time, but⌠how much more time? How much more hope do we have to lose beforeâŚâ His voice trailed off, swallowed by the quiet despair hanging in the air.
âAs much time as it takes,â you said, though the words felt like a fragile thread of hope in the face of mounting doubts. âChoso, we have to believe itâll happen. Itâs the only thing keeping meâŚâ You faltered, your voice cracking as tears spilled down your cheeks. âKeeping me going.â
Chosoâs heart broke at the sight of your tears. He shifted closer, pulling you into his arms. The familiar scent of himâa blend of sandalwood and the faint metallic tang of his cursed energyâwashed over you, grounding you in the warmth of his embrace.
âIâm sorry,â he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. âIâm so sorry. You donât deserve this. Any of this.â
âNeither do you,â you murmured against his chest, where his heartbeat thudded steadily beneath your ear, a comforting rhythm amidst the turmoil.
That night, tangled together under the weight of heavy blankets, you whispered promises into the quiet. He swore his love for you would never waver, no matter what happened. You promised not to let this struggle drive a wedge between you, even when the burden felt unbearable. It was a fragile truce with fate, but it was enough to see you through another night.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The routine became all too familiar: tracking ovulation, scheduling doctorâs appointments, enduring endless tests and invasive procedures. Each visit to the fertility clinic felt like navigating a labyrinth of sterile rooms and clinical jargon, leaving a gnawing sense of inadequacy that neither of you voiced aloud.
Choso loathed the way the nurses looked at himâwith pity masked by professionalism. He hated the hushed tones and the apologetic smiles that seemed to suggest he wasnât enough. And worst of all, he hated the way a small, insidious part of his mind whispered that youâd be better off with someone elseâsomeone who could give you everything he couldnât.
You despised the way the world moved on around you, oblivious to your struggles. Friendsâ pregnancy announcements, baby showers, the cheerful chatter of parents in parksâeach was a cruel reminder of what you didnât have. Yet, despite the cracks forming in your resolve, you clung to each other. Even when the silence between you grew heavy with unspoken fears, you stayed tethered to the love that had carried you this far.
One evening, after yet another exhausting day at the clinic, you sat on the couch in the dark. The only light came from the muted television, casting flickering shadows across the room. You leaned against Choso, your head on his shoulder, while his fingers absently traced patterns on the back of your hand. Neither of you spoke for what felt like hours, content to simply exist in the shared quiet.
âDo you think itâs worth it?â you asked suddenly, your voice barely more than a whisper.
Choso stiffened, his hand stilling in its movements. âWhat?â
âAll of this,â you said, gesturing vaguely. âThe appointments, the treatments, the constant disappointment. Do you think weâre just setting ourselves up for more heartbreak?â
He turned to face you, his expression unreadable. âAre you saying you want to stop?â
âI donât know what Iâm saying,â you admitted, tears spilling over once more. âI just⌠I donât know how much more I can take.â
Chosoâs arms encircled you, pulling you close as though he could shield you from the pain. âIf you want to stop, weâll stop,â he said firmly. âBut if thereâs even a part of you that wants to keep going, then weâll keep going. No matter how long it takes, Iâll be here. Iâll always be here.â
You clung to him, your tears soaking into his shirt. In that moment, you realized that no matter how difficult the journey, you werenât alone. Choso was your anchor, your partner, your everything. Together, you would face whatever storms lay ahead, one day at a time.
The following weeks brought a mix of cautious hope and deep uncertainty. Your doctor proposed trying a new treatment, one that was more invasive but held a higher chance of success. The decision to move forward felt daunting, like stepping into uncharted waters, but neither of you could bear the thought of giving up on a dream you had nurtured for so long.
Choso stood by you through every stepâevery injection, every scan, every procedure. He held your hand tightly in the waiting room, his thumb tracing soothing circles against your skin. On days when the side effects left you exhausted and irritable, he met you with patience and quiet reassurances. Warm tea. A favorite blanket. Silent companionship when words felt too heavy to bear.
There were moments of light amidst the darkness. One afternoon, after a particularly grueling appointment, Choso surprised you with a small potted plant. âItâs a symbol of hope,â he explained, his cheeks tinged pink with embarrassment. âSomething we can take care of together.â
You laughed through your tears, touched by the gesture. The plant found a place on the windowsill, a small but enduring reminder that even in the bleakest times, life could still flourish.
As the months wore on, the emotional toll on both of you became undeniable. There were argumentsâraw moments where the grief and frustration boiled over, leaving scars of guilt and misunderstanding. But each time, you found your way back to each other, reminded of the love that had brought you together in the first place.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and amber, Choso took your hand in his. His voice was quiet but steady as he said, âI donât know what the future holds for us. But I know that whatever happens, as long as I have you, itâll be enough.â
Tears filled your eyes as you leaned into him, your heart swelling with a bittersweet mixture of love and sorrow. âYouâre enough for me too,â you whispered. In that moment, a fragile sense of peace settled between you, the knowledge that no matter where the journey led, you would face it together.
