AO3 Phandom Stats - Top or Bottom?

As many of you may have noticed there has been a shift in the depiction of Dan and Phil in fanfiction over the past few months from previously predominantly Dan being written as the bottom to now largely Phil bottoming. This post aims to put that trend into numbers and visualise it in a few overly convoluted diagrams below the cut.

Does any of this matter? Absolutely not.

Is it interesting? Oh boy, it sure is!

Disclaimer: This is an analysis of the fanfiction writing and tagging trends within the Phandom. It's at most tangentially related to the Real People Dan and Phil and is not meant to spark any type of discourse. I am doing this as an avid fanfic reader and with the utmost respect and appreciation for the authors of these fics, so I don't want to see any negativity directed towards them. Above all this is meant to be fun and interesting.

And as always - don't like it, don't read it <3

Methodology

To get the numbers shown here I filtered the works in the Phandom/The Fantastic Foursome (YouTube RPF) AO3 tag by "date updated" from the Jan 1st to Dec 31st of each year and by the following tags:

Bottom Dan Howell

Short excurse on AO3 tags for those unaware:

The tags I chose are canonical tags, which means other tags that mean the same thing but are for example spelled differently are linked to this tag by tag wranglers and appear when you search for the canonical tag (see example below).

Additionally, the "bottom x" tags are metatags for the power bottom tags, which means fics tagged with "power bottom x" also appear when you filter works for these tags.

It's important to note that not every fic where one of them tops or bottoms is tagged as such. That means these stats very specifically look at the author's choice to tag fics with these tags and not the overall amount of fics where one of them tops or bottoms. However, I would argue it's fair to assume that it's at least somewhat reflective of the general writing trends within the Phandom.

For simplicity's sake I will refer to these tags as e.g. "Bottom!Phil" (b!p) going forward.

Stats 2013 - 2024

Here you can see how many fics were tagged with each tag in the respective year and the amount of bottom!dan and bottom!phil fics relative to the total amount of fanfic written in the same time span.

As expected, up until 2023 the split was about 2 b!d to 1 b!p fic (precise numbers: 71% to 29%; see pie chart above).

In 2018 we can see a peak in both in the number of phanfics written and the relative amount of fics tagged as bottom!dan.

Starting in 2023 (more on that below!) this flips and in 2024 the ratio of b!d to b!p fics was 1 to 4 (precise numbers: 81% to 19%; see pie chart above).

Furthermore, making up 4,62% of the total amount of phanfics written in 2024, the bottom!phil tag is relatively speaking twice as popular now as the bottom!dan tag ever was.

Sidenote: You can see that generally the amount of fics tagged with b!d and t!p, as well as b!p and t!d correspond to each other for obvious reasons (they're usually fucking each other). This year however there's 16 fics more tagged with bottom!phil than top!dan, which shows that there's been a very specific interest in writing and tagging bottom!phil in the last year.

Here you can see the total amount of phanfics written by year because I already collected the data, so I might as well put it here:

Stats 11/2023 - 12/2024

Now I want to take a closer look at the past few months post hiatus.

You can see that there's been a steady increase in the total amount of fics written per month!

That's incredibly cool!! (Love to all the wonderful writers out there <33)

Before we get into the actual stats, it's important to note that we're working with very low numbers here, so don't be fooled by overinterpreting percentages in the first few months depicted and look at the actual numbers! In the diagram below I excluded September and October 2023 because there simply wasn't enough data to produce useable results.

Contrary to what I expected, the increase in fics tagged with bottom!phil does not coincide with gamingmas 2023 (pour bot hem and top bunk kind of guy), nor phil's birthday live stream (topped by kakuna) but only really starts in June 24 and spikes in August for reasons I'm not fully sure about.

If I had to pin it on one thing it'd be the precious baby angel picture, which was posted in mid August.

Much more likely is though that this was simply a dynamic that built over months and had a wide array of reasons mentioned above and could very well be a self-reinforcing dynamic of more and more people looking for that tag and also writing for it.

If anyone has more insight on this, please share your thoughts :]

Nobody Asked For This: My Rankings of the Hermione x Weasley Ships with REASONS

I drafted this weeks ago and had set it aside with no clear plan to publish it. Then, after a stroke of 2 AM genius this morning, I wrote a piece called Ranking the Weasleys, (to be posted on 19 Sept 2024 in honor of Hermione's birthday) and it seemed like a great time to finalize this post and share it. Feel free to tell me your rankings in the comments, be it your list of the fittest Weasley as you find them or your ranked-list of pairings with Weasleys, whatever you fancy to share. Enjoy! - - - - I made a loooong post with recs for each of my top Hermione/Weasley ships that you can check out here. Read Ranking the Weasleys or see the related post where I talk about writing Ranking the Weasleys and I share just a few initial thoughts on the fetishization of war wounds in the fandom here. - - - - I've recently dove into the world of Hermione x Any-Of-The-Weasley-Brothers pairings, which is what happens when you're burnt out on the regular ships you read and looking for something more. Personally, I'm surprised I gravitate towards so many Hermione-focused pairings, especially het pairings, but that's just what I've been into lately. I hadn't considered pairings with her and any of the Weasleys until someone recommended Charmione fics in a thread for Theomione. Once I dug into the fandom's characterizations of the Weasley brood and had a better sense of who each of them were on their own, I found I really like many of these ships, some more than others. The rankings of my top-three rotate pretty regularly depending on the last great fic I've devoured. This is a snapshot of where things stand today but it could move around. Before we dive in, I've preview my rankings and the major themes of the pairings in the most popular fics shipping Hermione with a Weasley. 1. Bill: Wolf-ish Daddy 2. Fred: Uplifting, Fun, and Romantic 3. Charlie: Sexy and Rugged 4. George: Growing Through Grief 5. Percy: Acceptance of Self, Also Rules Daddy 6. Ginny: A Firecracker and a Friend 7. Ron: Angsty Best Friends-to-Lovers 8. Gideon or Fabian: Time Travel AU or Ghost Lover(s) 9. Arthur or Molly: I haven't read these ships so they're going in the bottom of the list. I'm not opposed to reading these pairings but there's already such a trove with all the brothers in my tbr list that I'm not sure I'll ever dive in. 10. Weasley Progeny: I haven't read any of these ships. I have not read many pairings that include anyone dating their friends' kid in the next generation. (Though I have read a small number of fics pairing characters like Hermione or Ginny with older characters like Kingsley or Sirius...shoutout to the older/younger Nottcissa ship.) 11. Aunt Murial: Technically she's a Prewett but I think I would be into a Murmione ship if we got there. So far nothing comes up on AO3. - - - - 1. Billmione: What I love about a Hermione x Bill dynamic is his position as oldest-sibling and caretaker. If the author has resolved the relationship with Fleur as one that has ended in divorce or death, that extra element of emotional tenderness really can push the story to complex depths. I also find it interesting to see how writers engage with Bill's hybrid/half-werewolf affliction. I'm hard-pressed to really fall in love with any Billmione fic where their relationship starts pre-Battle of Hogwarts, though I do get it. I personally enjoy stories that can be canon compliant so I want to see how the Fleur issue is handled. I also find that with such a significant age-gap for that developmental stage of teenager-dom, (not like Fleur was THAT much older than Hermione but still...), it's incredibly rewarding to see an older Hermione that brings some kind of life experience to the relationship so she can be more equal with Bill.

In some of the fics, especially a few of the multi-Weasley, reverse-harem style pieces I've finally started reading, Bill's older-brother position and wolfy streak create the core dynamic of the group.

I'm not the biggest fan of the multi-Weasley pairings with Hermione but what I loved most in the standout fics are the group dynamics and individual roles that come out. Hermione can be incredibly stubborn and independent on her own and it's always interesting when she's in opposition to Bill to see how the others in their relationship choose sides.

- - - - 2. Fremione: On it's face, I don't even know if I like this ship all that much but I keep finding myself suckered in. I suspect a big part of it is that it hits me in the sentimental feels. My inner-teen just loves a Hermione x Fred story that traces their young love to whatever conclusion the author brings it to. Even if they get together when they're older and Fred lives through the final battle, they both usually end up with a friends-to-lovers scenario that's full of light sweetness and sometimes romance.

There are some truly fantastic works in this ship and I go 50/50 on whether I prefer ones where Fred lives or not. Depends on my mood and the tone of the story I suppose. There are very few stories in this pairing that I haven't enjoyed and the element of pranking really can make shorter fics fun.

I REALLY enjoy past Hermione/Fred relationships being included in fics where she looks back on their love fondly while she navigates new relationships, sometimes with one of his brothers. Fred is often portrayed as a goof, which seems to encourage authors to consistently write a more engaging and dynamic version of Hermione instead of following some of the fanon's (beloved by me as well) personality tropes/traps of her being insecure, slow-to-assert-herself, angry-broken-or-both and etc. His character brings out some of her best qualities consistently across fics, imo.

- - - - 3. Charmione: I quickly realized when I started reading Charmione fanfics that I do not give a shit about dragons but deeply wish I did. It's a cool plot device and part of the world to hang out with but it's not for me. Tons of appreciation for writers who have thoughtful plot lines and research interesting medical maladies-- but it's hard to hold my interest. (A million kudos when a dragon-centered fic does though!) The Reserve is usually full of original characters, which is fine, but I find myself less invested in the story if we don't know much about these OCs to build out that world.

I often find in the dragon-reserve heavy pieces that I was getting part-way through were objectively GOOD multi-chapters but I kept stalling out in favor of reading something else. Usually whenever there's a Hermione that ends up at the dragon Reserve, she's characterized by her unyielding passions for creatures' rights, spurred on by house elf and werewolf activism. Those are interesting characterizations for her but they just don't keep my attention. That said, I have yet, to date DNF'd any Charmione work so clearly it's not a huge imposition. That said, Charmione is in the top third because there's so much that can be done with this character. I've read a number of fics where Charlie is ace (asexual, demisexual, etc.); where's he's inexperienced because he's married to his job; where he's "too free-spirited" and very experienced; where he's enthusiastically bisexual; where he's not interested in marriage; where he's pining over Tonks; and so much more. His sporadic attendance at family holidays and the ability for Hermione or others to visit him on the Reserve lends to great plot opportunities.

- - - - 4. Geormione: I haven't been around long enough to fully understand why Fremione is a more popular ship than Geormione, but here are some observations: - Fred is portrayed in the fandom as the more loveable, airy goof while George tends to be painted as the more serious and quiet of the two - Generally, in the canon, Fred speaks more than George, from what I've been seeing, as I notate up my secondhand copies of the books - Fred's death or, depending on the fic, brush-with-death, is ripe for the reimagining of his relationships and personality - According to internet gossip, Hermione with Fred were considered for pairing in the canon originally but it didn't suit the overall plans for the series. Source for this can not be verified but it's come up in multiple places. I believe this contributes to the numbers: Fremione has 2182 works and Geormione has 548 works on AO3, as I draft this. All that said, George is usually characterized as the quieter and possibly more serious twin. He might be more shy than the outgoing Fred. Post-war, he often mourns the loss of his twin brother, his best friend, and his sense of himself as part of the pair which can, frankly, be kind of a drag if a writer is looking for a pairing to write a hot romance about. (Not that people can't be sexy or have healthy sexual relationships while grieving!) However, when works take the journey to establish Hermione and George, it's often incredibly rewarding. It tends to feel like Fremione with the temperature turned down on the lightness and has the ability to go deeper into any darkness that needs to be explored. I do love a Geormione but there are statistically fewer works out there than some of the other pairings, thus it's earned it's spot mid-tier. - - - - 5. Permione: There's not much to say because there aren't that many longer fics with this pairing written and most times it's tied to a Hermione x Multi-Weasley scenario. This gets the 5th and some days I would rank it higher because there are worlds in which this is the actual correct pairing of all of the brothers, based on what we can surmise from the canon.

A swotty, uptight prefect-turned-Ministry drone with a regretful heart of gold, Percy's guilt over abandoning his family and Fred dying before him is well-matched for how many writers imagine Hermione's coping with the aftermath of the war. Hermione would have known him during some prime formative years and knows he'll date muggle-born or half-blood witches, a la Penelope Clearwater. It's easy to dismiss Percy as being "not fanciable" if you don't read this ship but some of the writers out there make a compelling case for him, particularly when they make a logical transition from his personal fastidiousness to him seeking to play with control and BDSM elements in his private affairs. I love a good Permione piece. He's often positioned as the conservative punching bag of the family and it's a thing of art when a writer makes us root hard for him.

- - - - 6. Herminny: I haven't much of anything in this pairing yet. Truthfully, I've been holding off on it because I'm sure I'll do a deep dive once I start. It shouldn't come as a surprise that I've read almost no Harmony works either. I love a F/F fic but tend to read in waves and I've been working my way through the Weasley brothers pairings (when I'm not refreshing for Nevmione and Theomione works.) If you have any excellent recs for Herminny or other pairings name, please drop me a line! The reason Herminny is above Romione is because I love many of the fanon characterizations of Ginny in all the other fics I've read, especially when she's mischievous, cheeky, in tune with her sexuality, and ready to take on her own adventures in the world. The ones I have read where she and Hermione have been together were lovely but most were very short fics in collections. - - - - 7. Romione: I read A LOT of Hermione-centered works and authors very often find a need to resolve the young romance with Ron or use him and their relationship as a catalyst that propels our heroine down a path into the arms of another man. I can honestly say that I have read ZERO Romione endgame fics to date, and that includes one shots AND drabbles (~100k words or less.) WILD, right?

I really enjoy angst and Ron is one of the punching bags most often leaned on by writers. One of these days, I'm going to go on a Romione bender as an offering of penance to his character for all of the times I rooted against him in every other fic.

- - - - 8. Lowest Tier: I have never read a Hermione x Molly nor an Hermione x Arthur fic, and while I'm not fundamentally opposed, I'd be flabbergasted to find either pairing beating Romione. I'd much sooner read an Arthur/Molly fic than one that ships either with Hermione because that's just where I'm at right now. I'm happy reading works that aren't smutty in any way but damn if some smut doesn't help along a work that really isn't capturing my interest. While I love when I see versions of Arthur and Molly who are loving friends and/or parental figures to Hermione, the angst-lover in me doesn't mind a solid bashing of either of them and it's hard to get that out of my head. As for the other possible pairs with Hermione and Gideon, Fabian, Murial, or the children of the other Weasleys, I'm just not well-read enough in any of those pairings to have an opinion. I literally only started reading Marauders-era works two weeks ago (and really ONLY well-known Wolfstar fics so far.) A Note About Fleur: One character who's excluded from this list is Fleur Weasley nee' Delacour. I've only read triad- or multi-Weasley fics that put Hermione with her and Bill. While I do love a Bill/Fleur/Hermione work, it seemed disingenuous to rank Fleurmione against the others with what little I've read. That and I'm so clearly jazzed about a Billmione where Bill's free-and-clear to be with whoever, that my ranking of Fleurmione would be heavily biased.

This is Exactly What It Looks Like, a Stranger Things (Steddie) fic which has grown rather wildly popular compared to most of my other work! I've affectionately tagged it as "Porn With Plot" and "Didn't Know They Were Fucking" 😆

2. Second Most Kudos

This is actually the same fic as above, lol, so instead I'll go with third most kudos! Trying to Escape What You Can't Let Go is a Star Wars gen fic, a no-Order-66 post-war story wherein Fox adopts a young teen Boba and everyone has to deal with the fallout of that idiotic choice. Dripping with found family feels!

3. Third Most Comments

(I'm going with the "comment threads" listed on the ao3 stats page rather than the actual number of comments so I don't have to go digging!) This one is The Ghost in Our Story, which I wrote for the 2024 Steddie Big Bang! It's a mystery/supernatural thriller with some other fun weird elements. I remain ridiculously proud of the summary for that fic.

4. Fourth Most Bookmarks

This is Built on Bones and Middens, a Fox/Quinlan noir mystery fic I wrote for Clone Bang 2023! I still adore this one, I absolutely love exploring the gritty underbelly of Coruscant and I had such fun crafting the mystery and all its twists and turns!

5. Fifth Most Words

Just barely in 5th place is Maybe 10% Better, the first fic I wrote for Steddie! It's an omegaverse/soulmate AU written entirely from Tommy Hagan's POV. Yes, he's still an asshole and yes, it was an absolute delight to write him that way.

6. Fic With Fewest Words

All of the above are long fics, so it's nice to see a shout-out to the little guys! I'm not known for brevity, but I've written a handful of shorter Stranger Things fics. The shortest, at 200 words, is First Impressions, wherein Robin attempts to play matchmaker.

This was a fun game! It for sure skewed toward my long fics but it was still interesting to see how things got reshuffled with different sorts. It would also look pretty different if I separated out by fandom, but I am too lazy for that 🤣

A Year in Writing: 2024

Reviews for 2020 (222k), 2021 (205k), 2022 (95k), 2023 (20-30k?)

Total wordcount as of Dec. 31: 74.090, which is a monthly average of 6174 words. So 74k is nowhere near close to the 200+k that I used to do, right? But don't be fooled, it's AMAZING 74k, because after two years of utter struggle I am finally having fun again with writing! So 74k might be even a bigger win than the 200k I used to do. Big Win. Like, Big.

General review: Remember (you don't, neither did I, but my last review clearly states it) how I wrote in my yearly writing review last year:

So, this has been a very good writing year. Don't ask me what was going on in march and april, I honestly have no idea. Zero. No memory. As opposed to former years it was not like some big scary thing going on, I guess I was just busy with work maybe? Not feeling it? Who knows? Even better: who cares? Because bitch, I came back strong!

First of all, I did start tracking again, which now gives us nice statistics. And I set a monthly "goal" of 5k, which is something I can do, but like not as an actual goal but more as a number for tracking. And despite these two blurry nonexistent months I did that great.

But it's not about numbers. It's about being back in my since-I-can-think-favourite-hobby and outlet, and I am having fun with it again. There has been plenty of days when I didn't write anything, and I only wrote when I felt like/inspiration hit. But more often than not, when it hit, it HIT.

And I have to give a big shoutout to @kyratittyfish for this. (Which was already mentioned as a highlight in my 2022 review! Love ya, friend. <3) A lot of these words would not have happened if we didn't have that amazing Berlin trip in May with all the ideas that it sparked and if she wasn't such an amazing encouraging friend who always supported my late night "listen, what if..."-messages. Who always went all in "do tell me more about it" and "I like how you think" and I don't think I have to tell you, but that is fuel for writers. So the biggest part of these words would not have happened if dear Kyra wouldn't have supported all those small and huge what if's I have encountered this year. You know who you are, girl. (And then we met again and went on a fabulous winter island trip which has been another highlight of this year for me. <3)

So yeah, very good year, after two very hard years. Here's hoping for 2025.

Things posted: Plenty! Which includes two oneshots finished and posted on AO3 (a James/Steve ME3 banter and a James/Shepard post war scene) as well as a couple of WIPS from the post Akuze fic that has basically been my main focus this year (with a side of post war angst and some ME3 smut, mind me), which was tense knees, about cake, TBI, sleeping in the Kodiak, jello, two aces in disguise, post akuze promotion, sign language, James wrecks his knee, Corporal Giles, being stuck.

Things I would like to do next year: Write? Ehehehehe. Well, I would like to bring those MANY many many words of post Akuze notes into something I can start to post on AO3. That would be cool. As much as I love the fic, it's giving me a little trouble in terms of putting all those notes and ideas into one form to publish a fic with it. I would like to do that soon. Also, most recently the blorbo sleeper agents from 20 years ago woke up again, so maybe we will also see some King Arthur (2004) fic next year? Who knows?

Most important: take it easy and have fun. That's what I wanna do writing wise next year.

Since the Corporal Giles mini WIP was my most popular things this year, have it here once more.

“How’s Giles doing?” It’s a macabre question to ask, but it cuts to the chase. Shepard shrugs. The answer is as simple as fucked up. “Better.” Well, obviously Giles isn’t better. There’s no way he can get better, because he’s dead. He’s rotting in the dirt of Akuze, eaten alive by thresher maw acid, cowering behind a rock right next to Reda. He’s taken most of the hit, and she hasn’t (still got enough damage to need a trachea transplant and eighteen percent third degree burns on her skin, but she’s alive and he’s not, so that’s that). Corporal Giles won’t get better. But he stopped haunting her every single night, and every single minute of the day, and every single art therapy session. Because he’s the only thing of Akuze she remembers and while she’s bad at drawing, she’s apparently gifted in the horror genre, and she’s gotta draw something. Maybe she’ll draw something else tomorrow. Or maybe she won’t. Because Giles is better, but he’s still dead.

2024 AO3 Wrapped - For Writers

Taking a page out of @frownyalfred's bag and am compiling the stats that are most interesting to me (from various wraps I've seen) rather than using any one set template. I'm also going to stick to published stats because I've written chapters for Like the Cryptkeeper that have not published yet, in addition to a few WIPs I've gotten stuck in.

These last four stats I find interesting from a statistical perspective but also maddening, and I'm hoping one of you out there knows a trick. Because these three numbers are wrong.

Firstly, they include all hits/comments/kudos for Hey, Sister, but I wrote and posted half of that in 2022, so some of these are 2022 stats. Same goes for Nowhere Safer, which first posted near the end of 2023 but concluded in 2024! Augh.

And secondly, if I filter my stats down to 2024, it only shows me hits, comments, and kudos given to fics from 2024. My 2024 fics are little babies. Not only are they new and therefore less well-known, but they're also significantly shorter than, for example, The Return and Nature & Nurture.

AO3 is an archive. My older fics are FAR more popular than my shiny new fics! I WANT MY ACCURATE STATS. /endrant

Shocking. Genuinely stunning. This wholly comes down to me getting really interested in some of the relational mechanics between Dick and Jason and churning out a bunch of fics for Whumptober about exactly that. ("A bunch," I say. Three. I mean three.)

It was such a relief to finally feel like I got a little bit more of a handle on Dick. I didn't expect that this year.

I noticed while drafting Cryptkeeper that Jason was being VERY sweary in a way I don't usually write that felt appropriate and inappropriate for the setting at the same time. I finally realized my own internal distinction that he tends to stick to lesser swears when communicating verbally, while his own internal monologue will have a lot more f-bombs.

I love the "Batkids trust Bruce enough to crawl into his bed after a nightmare" but it's a trope that only ever squared with me in an uncomplicated way for Dick. I didn't see Jason falling into it without hesitation even as a younger kid and I really couldn't see Tim doing it, except for maybe much, much, MUCH later. I liked being able to solidify the uncomfortable middle ground for myself in Nowhere Safer.

It's not new knowledge that getting Jason and Bruce to talk honestly to each other is a difficult thing, but MAN has Cryptkeeper really driven it home. Yikes.

2025 Aspirations Or Goals:

Finish Like the Cryptkeeper.

Beef up some of my other pairings. I do want to keep writing my most delicious faves, but I'd like to explore some different combinations.

Tied to that, I'd like to build out my own understanding of some other characters within the Wayne universe. Steph and Duke remain a cipher to me, but so does Kon and Jon and Lois. I don't know that I would write more about them, but understanding them is at least more in that direction.

Tied to that, I'd like to find more new-to-me authors to read. My fic reading has fallen off a cliff for various reasons, but it's always a thrill to find talented writers who tackle the Fam in a cogent and engaging way.

Not necessarily specific to 2025, but I've never officially collaborated on a fic with anyone. That might be fun.

In other fun stats.......

On ao3 there are, at time of writing, 728 Ordem Paranormal fanworks in all languages. I have written 90 of them, accounting for a little over 12%. In English there are 277 Ordem Paranormal fanworks, so around 32% are mine.

In the past year specifically, there were 352 new Ordem Paranormal fics, so exactly 25% are mine. Of which English 197, meaning a little under 45% of English Ordem Paranormal fics from this year are mine.

Of course a lot of my works are on the shorter end, so says nothing of comparative word counts.

I am also the only writer in the Ordem Normal ao3 tag, though I know at least one other person who has written for it in English here on tumblr.

I would say about elsewhere but my Portuguese is extremely limited, and so its tricky for me. And I only post on ao3 and tumblr.

Estimating word count: I've gotten so much better at looking at an idea and predicting how long the final story is going to be.

BG3 Ship stats

I am a nerd with an obsession with spreadsheets and I'm making it your problem. Data collected manually from ao3 8/15/2024.

Tav/Origin ship stats

This is a heatmap showing the number of fics tagged between Tav, Durge, and all companions. I have chosen not to look at NPCs (even if there are many across the board higher than Minsc because deciding the cutoff gets tiring, and companions is pretty easy metric.

Surprising no one: Astarion is the most popular. The top ships among these are Tavstarion, Tav/Gale, Bloodweave, Durgestarion, and Tav/Halsin.

But to get a better sense of how things lie, lets look at these in % - and more - below the cut.

These are % of the total number of fics tagged for each character. And most of what it shows you is that the majority of fics are being written for Tav, with Bloodweave, Halstarion, Shadow'zel, Wyllstarion, and Wyllach scraping out.

We get a good sense of Tav fics, with Tav/

Because there is a lot more fics tagging the characters than shipping them, instead, I'm going to use the #of ship tags in the graph, to show a relative distribution and balance out less shipped characters.

This shows us the same but a bit more centered. Tav has slightly more fics than are tagged (a mix of overlapping ship tags on fic with untagged Tavs), but everyone else is as much as 75% lower (not even starting on Minsc).

The majority of Tav and Durge ships are with Astarion; Gale comes in second place, and much lower are Halsin, Shadowheart, then everyone else, with Jaheira and Minsc beneath Tav/Durge shipping - not as surprising as they're not romanceable.

The majority of Lae'zel ships are Shadowheart, but this isn't true in reverse - with more Shadowheart/Tav fics than Shadow'zel. Shadowheart is more commonly shipped with Karlach, but it's still the number 3 for both, then Durge, but while Lae'zel is evenly low with a slight hit for Wyll, Galeheart has a pretty significant showing.

Astarion is, unsurprisingly, majority tavships, but Bloodweave beats out Durgeships. Halsin has a respectable 5%, then Wyll with 3.8%, leaving Karlach the only one to so barely scrape above a 1%.

Gale is not majority Tav, but it beats out the impressive near 40% of Bloodweave, with Durge the only other ship of note, only Shadowheart and Halsin eking above 1%.

Wyll is the only companion more shipped with another companion than with Tav or Durge, at 37% Wyllstarion, followed by Tav, then Wyllach. He gets a decent shwoing from Durge and Gale, but is overall fairly high with the Origin companions.

Karlach has the widest spread, Tav still foremost, but Wyll, Shadowheart, Astarion all beating out Durge. Minthara stands out as pretty high value of 2%, beauting out Gale but not Lae'zel.

Halsin is majority Tav, and Astarion, and then low on everything but Durge. Gale and Shadowheart eke out above 1%, but Lae'zel and Karlach re both <0.5%.

Minthara stands out with the highest %Durge of any companion, albeit still lower than Tav, followed by Karlach, then Shadowheart, as femslash gotta femslahs. Lae'zel and Gale both have aggood showing, as does glitched-into-sharing-a-tent Halsin.

Jaheira is majority tavshipping, then Durge, and then a pretty even tie of Karlach and Minthara, Halsin a fic behind, and a smattering of low values with everyone else. Minsc has very few shipfics at all, so having even one is fairly significant, but aside from Tav, Minsctarion is a fairly impressive showing.

Overall, the most shipped wiith is Tav, then Astarion, then Shadowheart, then Durge, then Gale, with everyone else aways below. Karlach and Wyll have the most even range, while Durge and Astarion are the most tightly grouped to their top ship.

Tav & Origin ship stats

Similar to above, this heatmap looks not at ship tags, but at the platonic &s. The top five are mostly unchanged - Tav & Astarion, Tav & Gale, Astarion & Gale, but beating out Astarion & Durge is Tav & Karlach. I sense this might be all the angst in her canon endings.

These are generally much more even, but with a similar focus on Tav and a greater focus on Astarion and Durge.

Tav & Durge both are top but no longer majority Astarion, followed by Gale, then Shadowheart, then Karlach. Wyll and Halsin are more common with Tav, while Jaheira is more common with Durge - she does have some experience with Bhaalspawn.

Lae'zel & Shadowheart beat out Lae'zel & Tav, albeit with a much smaller gap, and Astarion and Gale both rank much higher than they did as ships. Shadowheart has a larger gap between & Tav anad &Lae'zel, but a significant boost to &Astarion at the expense of Gale and Karlach.

Astarion is one of the few to still be majority Tav, with slightly lower values from Gale & Durge, while Wyll, Karlach, Halsin and Shadowheart get a bigger bump. Lae'zel has increased, but is still pretty small in comparison.

Gale is pretty similar; while there is an increase in tags across the board, it's not super huge.

Wyll & Tav beat out Wyll & Astarion, with Wyll & Karlach keeping a tight third place. Gale sees a notable bump, but no one else really does. Karlach's are similar, with the expected bump to Astarion, and notably a drop from Shadowheart. Gale also gets a decent bump, bomb buddies stick together.

Halsin is very much the Tav & Astarion show, although Gale and Minthara have their showing. Jaheira and Minthara both have more Durge than Tav, then following Astarion, but where Jaheira and Karlach shine, Minthara and Halsin have a hefty total.

Minsc's main partner is Jaheira, but that's not reciprical. Otherwise, there are a handful with Tav, Astarion, and Karlach, and no one else.

Tav and Astarion remain the most tagged with, followed by Durge, but now Karlach taking the spot above Shadowheart. Minthara, Durge, and Wyll have the widest range, while Halsin, Gale, and Astarion the tightest.

And given that we have numbers on both & and / tags...

Ship to Platonic stats

This heatmap represents the number of / tags for two characters divided by the number of & tags. Blacked out are where either there are no & tags, or the value is zero - but these are all low values anyways.

With almost 20x more shipfic to friendfic, Durge/Halsin is the most romantic, followed by Karlach/ Lae'zel/ and Shadowheart/Minthara.

Most tags have more uses of / than & (with across the board / tags being more consistently used than &), but there are a few that are solidly more platonic than shippy. Astarion & Jaheira tops the ball, with 16 platonic to the lone ship fic, followed by Astarion & Minthara, Durge & Jaheira, and Astarion & both halfs of Shadow'zel. Astarion is just friendly with the girls!

The most "controversial" (ie, the ones that are closest to straddling the line even between shippy and platonic) is Gale & Jaheira, with the same number of / and & fics (1). Following that, Astarion/Karlach has <10 more & fics than / fics, followed by Gale/Lae'zel with 4 more shipfic, Gale & Karlach with 6 more & fic, and a tie between Shadowheart/Wyll and Jaheira/Shadowheart.

Minthara and Halsin are the two characters with the highest average values, being used far more often for ships than platonically, followed by Karlach and Astarion. Minsc and Jaheira are the most platonic (and the only ones with an average <1), followed by Wyll and Lae'zel.

Multiship fic stats

This is a section of a heatmap showing ships tagged on the same fic. The diagonal represents "otp:true", where the ship in question is the only one tagged on the fic (including platonic & tags). The % values are relative to the total number of fics with that ship tag. Only ships >10 uses were represented.

Tav ships overall had low otp:true values, likely represented by the high numbers of /Durge, /OC, and /Reader tags. Tav/Lae'zel had the highest at 34%, Tav/Halsin the lowest at 16. Tav/Tav and Tav/Durge were also high at 43% and 34% respectively.

Durge/Jaheira had the highest %otp with 77%, followed by Bloodweave at 72%. Also >50% otp were Gale/Minthara at 67%, Wyllstarion and Minsctarion at 60%, Karlach/Minthara at 54%, Galeheart at 53%, Lae'zel/Jaheira, Jaheira/Minsc, Durge/Minsc, and Astarion/Jaheira were only ever tagged alone.

Other ships with complete overlap are Tav/Karlach and Wyll/Minthara, Wyll/Jaheira with Tavstarion and Tav/Gale, and Gale/himself with Tav/Gale

This is an alternate version of the above heatmap, where instead of total values, it is set to the number of "otp:true" fics, so the values >100% in read represent fics where more were tagged with the two ship tags combined than the tag alone.

As is evident, the majority of ships are most frequently seen along Tavstarion, and to a lesser extent the other top ships.

Durge/Astarion, /Gale, /Halsin, /Shadowheart, /Karlach, /Lae'zel, and /Durge are all more commonly tagged alongside the respective Tav/ pairing (Tav/Tav, not Tav/Durge). Durge/Minthara and Tav/Minthara were tied, while Durge/Wyll barely beats out with 99%, although the /Jaheira and /Minsc pairings have no overlap.

Tav/Halsin is more often Tavstarion, Durge/Halsin more often Durgestarion, and Gale/Halsin more often Galestarion and Halstarion, representing the commonality of Astarion-Halsin ot3 pairings.

Shadowheart/Halsin and Karlach/Halsin are instead most often with Tav (although Karlach/Astarion/Halsin and Karlach/Shadowheart/Halsin are still higher than solo Karlach/Halsin). This isn't seen with Wyll or Jaheira. Lae'zel/Halsin isn't tagged alone on any fics, but is most commonly put up with Wyllach and Galeheart, then Halstarion, then other Halsin ships.

Lae'zel/Karlach is most often seen with Shadowheart/Karlach, and at 91% to Shadow'zel. Lae'zel/Gale is seen with Shadow'zel and Galeheart. OVERALL THOUGHTS: I'm slow but I still like (most of) what I published. Also clearly not built for non-explicit writing.

MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED: Eyes to Welcome You Home might be my favorite of the year. It was written during one of the worst trips of my life to bury my aunt, and I think that it helped at least keep me distracted enough from grief to help my family where needed. My favorite part was the hopeful ending.

MOST POPULAR: It's a vicious cycle, baby with 246 Kudos. This was part of the Darklina Spring Fling and probably the last time I was my most active in the darklina fandom. I was a silly goober for posting early and not understanding how to post to the collection. In my defense, I am just a baby.

STORY WITH THE SEXIEST MOMENT: OOOF this is hard. But! I have to give it to Mountain Glory, when OFC watches Gaz jerking Soap while Ghost fucks her? It's called team bonding.

MOST FUN STORY TO WRITE: Another win for Mountain Glory. Probably my least second (eighth) guessed story? And probably the quickest one, where the words came easily and I didn't spend two months debating if it made sense.

HARDEST: A tie between Eyes to Welcome You Home and Belonephobia because they both came during a heavy time in my life. Like many 2023 was filled with loss but for as hard as they were to write I'm glad I did.

BIGGEST SURPRISE: This is so hard! But I think the reception to Belonephobia! I was so critical of it, especially with using a beta reader for the first time in a long time so when people seemed to enjoy it I was floored.

DID YOU TAKE ANY RISKS IN WRITING THIS YEAR? I think branching further in to actually doing multi-chapters? I stuck to posting longer one shots but towards the end of the year I really started planning and writing my first long multi-chapter fics.

MOST UNINTENTIONALLY TELLING STORY: Lose Control (recently hidden, sorry) has a lot of direct correlation to how I feel about living in America this year. Take Me more closely resembles my relationship with alcohol so there's that lol.

FAVORITE LINES/SCENES: Ooo okay okay okay. I'm going to have to cheat and pull from Lose Control. It's the scene where Galadriel first sees Halbrand, and I just really like how it came out.

But the young collector looks up, for just a second. My heart beats loudly in my chest, filling my ears with the sound of rushing water as our gazes connect. It could not have lasted more than two seconds, but it felt like an eternity. There is something that comes, unbidden, from the recesses of my mind. Alpha.

The word pushes through as if breaking through a dense fog. I nearly scream, frightened by the uncontrolled thought that threatened to seep out of the confines of my mouth. The Zevalise should've prevented it. The Zevalise was supposed to be stronger than our urges. Stronger than the genome. The young collector's eyes bulged minutely – as if he could hear the dangerous thought take shape inside me. He turns abruptly, and his partner takes the case.

They leave, and my mother turns to fuss at me again. She's speaking again, but it doesn't register.

I am frozen. Deaf to the world as I tried to piece together what just happened. I tried, in vain, to understand the thudding in my chest, the rapid decentralization of all my senses from just the connected sight of an alpha. My mouth dries out, and I gaze blankly into my mother's eyes as she makes her final adjustment. I hope she doesn't see right through me.

I wish for no one to see me at all.

MY FAVE PART OF FANDOM IN 2023: Meeting some of my favorite people via the Haladriel & Darklina fandom! Some of the most accepting people I know and I love them dearly for being there during some of the craziest moments. A lot of times it felt like I was going insane with other people in the fandom spreading lies & contextless biases. But it was nice to have people who could objectively come together and acknowledge that "no, I see it to. You're not alone in this."

2024 WRITING AMBITIONS: I'm going to attempt to 1) Write every weekday and plot/edit on weekends, 2) post a completed multi-chapter (more than 5) work, and 3) write at least 100K this year. But most importantly, I would like to actually take more time in editing/writing, and just generally improving.

2024 FICS ON THE IMMEDIATE HORIZON: I don't plan to post in January, however, my next one-shot is likely the Brother's Best Friend Call of Duty AU with Ghost x OFC.

But also bad since now I want to reread mangas so I can remember and to continue the wips 😔😔😔 but im already rereading/rewatching stuff I can’t put moreee on plate (I say rereading/rewatching but that’s also inconsistent) also I really want to get back to orv the wips are SO fun and I just miss it but it’s been so long since I read the material I knowww i need to refresh on their characters

JDJFJFKDK as I expected…. but hehehe while I used to lament over how it’s also terribly the longest fic I had I can say with happiness it NO LONGER IS! I don’t know if saying multi chap I posted is longer is cheating but welll… in my defense I kinda wrote in one setting… well not one setting as in one actual setting but yeah. it was meant to be one whole chapter but I broke it up since I thought it worked better that way

anyways im not really surprised at this since lol its a popular shit in orv soooooo. I don’t hate the fic, it was just an impulsive fic that came out of nowhere and ahahahah it’s so funny to read my notes that say the same thing “I REFUSE TO BELIEVE MY LONGEST FIC IS A DOKHYUK FIC THAT I WROTE ON IMPULSE” im beyond amused ahahah.

I would reread this one just to see how it was but i get so much second hand embarrassment when i think of rereading this that i can’t but what i can remember the last I reread it wasn’t bad at all. okay you know what. let’s just reread it. okay it’s actually good. I like it???? it was genuinely fun to read 😭 but I am just increasingly embarrassed by it LOL.

this one was a like a last min for a bday event… I don’t think I would do it but as it always go. I made it. but I do think that the most hit work being my longest posted for the ship (3000) and my most kudos is the shortest I posted for them (500).

I did like this one 💙 very cute and simple. actually when I went to reread it just now, okay I no longer mind this being my most kudos work. I love it! I think I got the hang of Tumblr 👀, and I'm happy I could participate in writing events. The idea was to be more flexible, developing interesting stories with AUs or tropes I hadn't tried before. It allowed me to write my first demon long fic, mafia, ABO, and vampire AUs, so I'm really proud of them!

But... I couldn't finish Far Cry 🥲, and no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to write drabbles 🥲 It sucks because, as a reader, I always read drabbles first to check if I like the writer's style before delving into longer fics, so the fact that I can't...😭🤧💀

About Far Cry... although it stings, I know it's for the betterment of the story, so I'm at ease with the current hiatus while I write. It's going to be my main focus going into 2025 and hopefully it will be worth the wait!
