I haven’t posted about this here yet, but boy howdy has my life been A Mess™️ of late.

TW: medical talk, high stress situations, mentions of blood under the cut

This is a very long post, so a mild TL;DR: ma’s sick and this is me for eternity now (loud noises in video): 

Picture it. November 10th (ish. Time is hard.). The motherbeast came down with a case of viral bronchitis. She got a few days off work to recover. 

A couple days pass. She went back to work. Her manager sent her in the cooler for two hours. 

An immediate downturn ft. a fall out of bed that took 45 minutes to fix, heavy panting, confusion, the whole lot. She went to the Express ER. They said “oh hey, your viral bronchitis has become full blown pneumonia. You’re goin’ to the Real Hospital™️ for two days. See if you respond well.” Turns out, she did, at first. 

About a week or two of what seemed like solid improvement all came crashing back down when her return to work arrived. She went back to work... or tried to. She went to step onto the curb and gravity said no. She faceplanted the pavement, and the ambulance was called. A thorough concussion check later, and her manager drove her and her truck home. The next day, she went back to the Express ER, and they said “oh shit, your lung xray is worse than last time. Back to the Hospital for you.” 

That stay was nine days long. She was tested for tuberculosis (which came back negative, thankfully), and had a PICC line installed. During said stay, she did get rather confused and agitated, as it was near the end of the month and the rent needed paid. She called me in the middle of the night, asking me to move her IV... despite me being at home. So that was a thing.

After she came home on the 4th of this month (December), I had to start administering her PICC line antibiotics, every 8 hours. Did y’all know that cefepime (a bigboi antibiotic) smells like someone doing unholy things to eggs? Sulfuric smelling bullshit, that. Had some hiccups there, what with massive air bubbles in the line and getting the infusion orb stuck on the line. We were supposed to be done the 25th. Then she went to her new primary care doctor, and it was extended to the 6th of January, which h.

Anyway, fast forward to the 23rd. Mum was out with a pal, getting some groceries, and some Miralax ‘cause... y’know, and she fell on her ass. At this point, falling down is like a glowing neon red flag. She came home, was a bit wobbly, but was generally okay. Her primary care doctor called after the home health nurses stole some blood to tell her that her potassium levels are critical. A friend/my ‘adopted’ brotherbeast, Frank, brought her a fuckton of bananas that night. 

Now this is where it gets real fuckin’ spicy. The morning of the 24th, after we get done with the 7am orb, I gave her a dose of Miralax. She was fine, until the 3pm orb, when severe gut cramps showed up. Those lasted until about midnight when things... moved along. After that, shit went downhill fast. I put her to bed after orb times at 11 pm, and she kept waking up. As time went on, she got more and more confused. Like, she knew general things, in a kinda slow way, but she could not follow directions. On the morning of the 25th (fucking Christmas.), things had reached its boiling point. She was very confused, unable to focus, slurring words. I rang up a friend, Sandy (who has been a massive help this whole time of Fuckery), to get her to the ER. This triggered a complete meltdown. It took both of us to get her out of her chair, not to mention the sudden burst of confused crying and begging not to go. 

We finally managed to get her there, and the ER’s like “yo this looks like a stroke, so we’re gonna keep her, do an MRI or three, and get back to you.” Turns out she was very dehydrated, currently has a UTI, and is still a bit... shall we say, fucked up. But, the MRI came out clean, but there was some issue with the PICC with like, a blood clot, but they cleaned it out, so they let her go on the 26th. 

But just wait for it... I put her to bed pretty much as soon as she got home, ‘cause she doesn’t sleep in the hospital. Makes sense, right? I went to check on her at about 8, and she was unable to really comply with requests/commands/questions. I’d ask “what’s your name?”, I’d get her name (most of the time), but when I’d ask “when’s your birthday?”, I’d get her name again. Or the fact she lost her PICC line cap, and I’d ask her to hold the newly sterilized port so it wouldn’t touch anything, she’d say okay, take it, and immediately drop it. Repeatedly. 

I broke down whilst on the phone with my dad because everything has been too much of late, and eventually put her back to bed to wait for the 11pm orb. 

11pm rolled around... and well. I couldn’t get her to wake up. She’d react to me poking and prodding her by making noise and moving away, but she would not wake up. Not properly. So, I called the on call home health nurse to see if she could help, and she pretty much told me to just call an ambulance. Not wanting the expense because I live in Hell the US, I called my dad. He helped me try to wake her up over the phone, but she flat refused. I was left with no choice. So, I called the ambulance, and just before they knocked on the door, she sat up like “huh?” but extra confused. She almost didn’t go to the hospital because she said “nah, I don’t want to go” but one of the EMTs was like “nah, you gotta go.”

So, she spent about 8 hours in the ER, and they told me that they can’t keep her since she was mostly lucid, but they did float an Idea (a skilled nursing facility, at least until she got her ducks in a row) to her that was immediately denied, but with some prodding from me, she finally agreed. So they moved her upstairs from the ER to keep her until they can find a facility in the Blue Cross/Blue Shield network that’s reasonably local. The one that came to visit yesterday turned out to not be, and I’m pretty sure the dude kicked it back to the Case Supervisor to see if they can find another. But, after they moved her into her room, she’s cleared up quite a bit. 

She’s still a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, a bit unfocused, and can get caught out in the grapes mentally, but she has improved a lot. 

Oh, and another thing she’s been doing is fighting me re: eating since the first go around. Bread’s a texture issue, rice is hard to eat without teeth, and everything else “smells bad” (which, since she’s quit smoking as of that second hospital stay... I understand, but you gotta sometimes push past that.) I did manage bananas though. Thank fuck for those. 

But, back to the plot: today (the 28th) was a decent day. Much clearer, less starts and stops in her speech. A bit more focused. She didn’t manage to sleep last night, so she was kinda tired. Had another MRI, but we won’t know about that until probably tomorrow (the 29th). Maybe. Had some PICC issues, though. The nurse got the cefepime running just fine, then mum had to use the bathroom, and when she came out, the machine started screaming bloody murder. After that, the nurse came back and tried to flush the line, since the cefepime was unable to run, and when she took the syringe off, the saline shot right back out... which ain’t supposed to happen. Hit me, the nurse, mum, the bed... probably got the windows too. So they’re working on that, and hopefully they figure it out.

Had my own woes at the hospital today, too. The sole of my boot fell off, so my ride/friend/adopted sister?, Sandy, went to walmart and got me some Heavy Duty Superglue, which I got it about half way stuck before we had to leave... then when we were pulling into the parking lot at home, the nurse in charge called to ask some questions about the PICC, the antibiotic, how long it’d been there, how long she was supposed to be on it, the pharmacy’s number, all that. So I went to get out of the car, my coke bottle fell out of my pocket, started rolling under the car, and I overextended. Fell right on my knees. They are not happy. Took a hot minute to get my dumb ass off the ground, without hurting Sandy, who is like 5′2″ and v smol. I am 5′6″ and... decidedly not. Plus the bonus rain.

UPDATE 12/29/2019: the diverticulitis has made a reappearance. It’s like everything is just It’s free real estate.

UPDATE 12/31/2019: Around 2 am this morning, she managed to roll out of bed and whack her head pretty good on something. They did a CT scan, and it came out clean. No concussion. However, now she has a sitter/keeper/minder to make sure she doesn’t do it again. It’s a good thing the nurses heard her fall, ‘cause despite being armed, the bed alarm didn’t go off. I know of all of this, ‘cause the hospital called me at 3 this morning, and boy howdy that’s a gut drop, let me tell you. But, better a CT ride and a bump on her noggin vs. the alternative. Sure is one thing after a-fucking-nother, ain’t it though.

UPDATE 1/1/2020: 2019 keep your problems challenge: she's had a major mental shift again, and now she's really groggy, really confused... So the hospital moved her to the ICU and called me for consent on a spinal tap, just to make sure they're not missing anything. Other than that, they've done x-rays and another CT, I think to check her spine, hips, the one leg she's been having issues with. The doctors also think that it may be the cefepime causing this altered mental state, and after doing some digging, boy howdy I sure believe it. Cephalosporins are some nasty fuckers.

So! That’s been my month and a half! I’d like to take a break now, please!

[ARTICLE] BC ENTERTAINMENT TO HOST BC CITY CONCERTS

BC Entertainment is in its twenty-second year and will once again be hosting its company concert for the eighth year since its founding. This year, the company will take on its biggest venue yet, with the concert nights taking place at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Tickets went on sale in late July and quickly sold out in near-record time due to the impressive roster. The first and second nights of the concert will be filmed for later DVD release as “22 Years of BC: 2018 2Gether BC City Concert”. The schedule for this events is as follows:

August 23: BC City Concert: 2018 2Together at Seoul World Cup Stadium @ 7PM  - 11PM

August 24: BC City Concert: 2018 2Together at Seoul World Cup Stadium @ 7PM  - 11PM

August 25: BC City Concert: 2018 2Together at Seoul World Cup Stadium @ 1PM  - 5PM, after-party at VOLUME Night Club in Gangnam @ 9PM-4AM.

ADMIN NOTES:

Like the Dimensions company concert last year, this event is one that’s part concert event and part standard event. All artists under the other companies will be invited to all nights of the BC City concerts for publicity and will be strongly encouraged (read: required, alongside a manager, unless they have a good excuse) to attend at least one night and show up backstage to get supportive shots of them for the concert DVD to show the strong front the three companies are trying to push. The three companies are in the midst of negotiations for more joint activities in the future, so Dimensions and Gold Star are dead set on showing support to gain leverage with BC. In short, it’s a business arrangement and idols from other companies are unlikely to be able to get out of going at least one night without extreme circumstances.

The after-party on the 25th is not an official schedule from the companies, but the companies are aware of it and it will reach the ears of all muses by word of mouth around their companies and social circles.

The Concerts:

Idols from all companies will be given backstage-access passes and may be backstage until 45 minutes before the concert begins. Idols from Dimensions and Gold Star may return backstage after the concert, but will be given private seats on the upper level at the back of the stadium during any concerts they attend to sit in during the show. Promotion of the event on social media is highly encouraged by BC, as well as Dimensions and Gold Star.

BC idols must be at the venue by 2PM on the 23rd and 24th and by 8AM on the 25th. Idols from other companies may begin arriving at 4PM on the 23rd and 24th and by 10AM on the 25th, but some may show up later than that due to schedules, either private or public. They will be given a private entrance to the event so they are not mobbed by fans. There will be a photo op for the press each day of the concerts an hour and a half before starting time that all BC artists are required to be present for and any guests from other companies are encouraged to be present for to show company unity in the media.

The After-Party:

The after-party will be hosted at VOLUME Night Club, an exclusive Gangnam nightclub owned by first-generation idol Lee Hawoon, which the idols have already been to once. The club will be open only to the idols from the three companies for the night. There will three managers (one of the younger managers from each company, unspecific to any group or soloist) present to make sure no one’s doing anything particularly scandalous, although Lee Hawoon has been careful to keep the after-party from the press to allow some freedom and to ensure that nothing gets out. Designated drivers have been made available on call to everyone for the entire night and they are expected to be utilized for any idol who gets even slightly tipsy.

One of Korea’s top DJs will be spinning for the night and the VIP areas (tables and rooms) have been opened to whoever arrives and can grab them first. Despite the rare amount of freedom provided, idols are expected not to devolve into debauchery and any contract-breaking behavior is still prohibited and will result in strict punishment.

Those under legal drinking age (’00 liners) will, of course, be prohibited from drinking. The managers present will be tasked with keeping an eye on making sure they don’t consume any alcohol and all bartenders are instructed to card everyone, although that’s not to say idols below drinking age won’t be able to get someone older to sneak them something if they’re the type to do so.

Overall:

In game, this event takes place Thursday, August 23, to the early morning of Sunday, August 26, but threads and other posts for this event may be started from Saturday, August 18 at 1PM EDT (the time this post goes up), to Saturday, September 8, at 11:59PM EST. Threads may be continued past the end date, but must be started before then. Non-event related interactions set outside of this time period may be conducted during this time as well.

listening through a new brain (2015)

prologue: frogs have so much spring:

homeless lady/grace singing in the prologue reminds me about how she, being homeless and really having nothing, ties together this theme of mortality, and life’s strangeness, and being grateful for what you have despite the circumstances.

gordon hasn’t “finish[ed] one song,” so i wonder how long he’s been employed with mr bungee

rhoda and gordon’s bickering/conversation feels really familiar between them. i wonder how long they’ve been friends; i hope since college,,, i have a lot of love for rhoda being the pillar of Work Ethic and advice and support and being a little bit bossy

prologue: 911 emergency/i have so many songs:

from the second song bill finn sets up a picture of normal gay culture (ex: the reality of having to worry about hiv, “mr bungee’s homophobic”) and i have so much love for how candid and unapologetic he is about telling lgbt stories. he is gay and jewish and goddamn his work is gay and jewish and that’s beautiful

heart and music:

i love what they did with the transition from i have so many songs to heart and music with the pulse ox.

also i gotta love the classic bill finn rhyme of horses & divorces. fucking iconic

one thing here that distinguishes anb from his other works, is, i think, how the songs are structured as an album. though falsettos and a new brain are both sung through, a new brain’s core songs are much more apparent, the first of which being heart and music. also bc they’re the only ones on the obc album but still. it’s interesting to see how he handles transition songs in a new brain. imo, the transitions in anb are weaker than his other shows: falsettos is more continuous, and 25th annual putnam county spelling bee has a different format (there’s dialogue), plus has transitions for comedic purposes (the goodbye songs)

mother’s gonna make things fine:

mother’s gonna make things fine has a manic comedic quality to it and ana gasteyer pulls it off really well. i esp like her blocking for that part

trouble in his brain:

“the invincibility of gordon michael schwinn” is a really interesting line to me. mimi and rhoda both say it — it’s a well known thing among those who know gordon. i wonder if this ties into gordon’s well-known desire to have a [musical] legacy or if it’s applied to other parts of his life?

be polite to everyone:

be polite to everyone is kind of a jam for a hallucination. i like jonathan groff’s acting choices in it (in the boot) that further clarify that he’s hallucinating because im dumb and found anb at like 1am a while back and didn’t get things at first. i just… accepted that mr bungee was there tbh

i’d rather be sailing:

the instrumentals in i’d rather be sailing are so soothing. it’s 11pm and aaron lazar is singing me a lullaby and all is right in the world. god, what charming, gorgeous voice, and what stellar execution. i have such a soft spot for aaron lazar after his performance in a new brain; it’s a charming role and he pulls it off with such decorum and sincerity. also i just fucking love roger. okay i was going to analyze this bit but it’s just a really sweet love song and i sometimes think about how this is the closest thing that william finn has written to a love song for his partner, and like,,, Y’all I Love This Song

(also. the piano [though it’s not marked as a specific dynamic in the sheet music] high note he sings at the end is stellar.)

i love the slight changes to this arrangement in the revival recording but i will not rest until “why is the smart son always the gay son?” “schwinn’s second law” is put back in the recording. i wonder why they cut that?

STILL it’s a BOP and  i love the rhyming in it and everyone sounds so good. this song is overlooked in its exposition of mimi; it gives insight to the circumstances that shaped her as a person. and they’re off gives an explanation behind her anger at gordon’s fatalistic behavior

last note for and they’re off: groff’s vocals are great here - i can feel the love he has for this song and this score

roger arrives:

i love roger arrives for all of the character dynamics it brings

roger is: -loved by all (“hallelujah” - mimi, which, like, same) -looking fit -damned appropriate -a strong emotional pillar -a dreamboat, and that’s the tea!

roger and gordon’s first irl interaction is so comical and quirky and real. i’m a little peeved they omitted rogers “no” (and a few other phrases from the performance) in response to gordon asking if he left after he found out. the first time i listened through i thought roger might’ve actual left afterwards and was ready to throw hands

roger rolls with gordon’s insanity with such stride and :’)

the whole “he looks good”/“he looks pale”/“he looks better” showcases everyone’s different outlooks on the situation and god knows i live for characterization through song

ROGER’S LITTLE STINT/IMPLICATION IN “GO GET DINNER. ROGER HAS ARRIVED” IS FUNNY HONESTLY. there was a youtube performance i watched where the roger - idr which video - emphasized this joke more. it was hilarious and i wish aaron lazar had leaned into that a bit

i think that the music still plays on gives a really interesting perspective both into mimi’s life, especially with the lines, “i was brash; i was bold,” and “married too young, and divorced far too old”

“the music still plays on… as my men depart” i think this line is interesting in that it emphasizes that mimi doesn’t want to be left alone. her divorce really affected her — it’s mentioned several times and she’s regretful. and right after it she feels stupid for feeling vulnerable. we see that later in the song, and the theme shifts into moving on, as the music (& life) still plays on

the homeless lady’s revenge:

roger’s attempt to persuade grace is very charming and her reaction is priceless and i love it so much. grace is such a chaotic force (insert prayer hands emoji x100)

the vocal arrangements in this is really nice in that everyone has in character, funny reactions, but the song still has lovely melodies and still feels like a song, not a filler. william finn really out here writing conversational theater at its peak. i definitely like these songs of his (like roger arrives, an invitation) because they don’t really get old and are so full of character

When pushing oneself to the brink of pressure, there were moments needed that weren’t always about posing in front of a camera or memorizing lines for the next appearance. So Jisub wasn’t able to promise the girls no cameras for this healing period-- this is a show after all-- but a small vacation outside of the stuffy dormitory building seemed warranted after the positive feedback he was receiving from the trainers and the dorm supervisors about the girls’ work ethic. No big scandals had rocked his office yet and, for that, a reward seemed not only generous but earned.

Besides, every show needed its ‘obligatory filler episode,’ no?

Episode start.

The girls’ first challenge is memorialized by a VTR that shows the faces of contestants that were and now are no more. Jieun, Yubin. The finale of Royal Survival is approaching fast and, with the numbers uneven yet again, the haunting question of ‘who would be the next to join them?’ lingers undoubtedly on more than one mind.

Thankfully, it’s an imagining that can be put off for a little while longer.

Once So Jisub outlines the destination of their “vacation,” the girls’ preparations for the healing episode begin in earnest after his on-screen departure. With the chill of autumn air still not having fully arrived in Seoul, it’s the perfect time to jump right in to Seorak Waterpia’s highlighted attractions: the hot springs, which draw many a crowd into their bubbling, inviting baths; the Rainbow Stream, whose marvelous fountain and pools allow visitors to enjoy themselves in a full swimming experience; the Fun Zone, for those who want a breather from the water to expend their energy on a volleyball game and the warm sands; and lastly, the Food Court which caters to hungry tourists needing a sugar spike to increase their adrenaline.

Beginning on November 2nd, the camera crew and producing team accompany the girls to the first day of filming. With no real plan except to let the girls be themselves, all separated groups are tailed by at least one camera operator, two stylists, and two producers to see what the girls get up to. Without scripts or planned subjects, the aim is to let real personalities shine -- or fade away, if someone doesn’t have the natural charisma to keep themselves edited into the final showing.

For the editing does pick and choose the most memorable moments, and leaves behind the boring hours in between on the cutting room floor. In the first thirty minutes, highlights are snatched of Lee Jihyun and Park Chaeyoung immersed in a thrilling water gun fight, as well as Jo Eunae’s dominance of the volleyball court. Yang Jiwon and Rose are the favorite on-screen duo, inspiring laughs from even the silent crew as they reenact Titanic’s famous scene. And lastly, Manoban Lalisa appears to adorably build her version of a sandcastle in the Fun Zone’s sandy play area. Lisa turns out to be the most popular one to follow, as the cameras continually soak up her riveting smiles when she’s with Eunae and when she’s with Rose, the beautiful girls catching many a glance from fellow tourists as they walk around together as pictures of happiness. The editing catches their good sides, ignoring the breaks in between of complaints of tiredness and feet aching as they spend hours in one place and then the other.

Active fun is interspersed with the healing part of this trip, emphasized by the lazy contentment expressed by Nam Dawon and Kim Seolhyun as they relax easily in the large pool of the Aqua Zone. Ahn Hyojin and Seoyoung accompany them and, despite the latter’s pretty begging of her dozing face to be edited out, is shown regardless-- a charming moment that couldn’t, and wouldn’t, go to waste. But, of interest, is the revelation of Seolhyun’s aversion to swimming. It’s only by Rose’s steady accompaniment that the girl attempts the feat, though flipping over in the water and scrambling to get rights to herself proves to be more entertaining than anything else. Not only is a flaw in Seolhyun welcomed (and charming in its own right), but so, too, is the positive feeling of trustworthiness that emanates from Rose’s guidance. The edited-in captions prove their bias, adding hearts and encouraging music to emphasize these two’s inspiring friendship as they navigate the water together.

For the majority of the episode it’s this peacefulness that colors it: a final collection of pure, idyllic happiness before the storm. The inevitable can’t be held off forever but, just for awhile, it can be ignored in favor of pretty smiles and childish games. It’s one last attempt to appeal these girls to the watching audience for, despite the show’s results that will come in only two more episodes, they each have the potential to succeed elsewhere should they find themselves there. The CEO knows this, knows that he cannot keep them all and that hearts will break on the heels of his final reckoning, but he hopes, whether they realize it or not, that this time of personal appeal is for their personal benefit as well as Royal’s. The sting of losing Yubin only reminds him of it: he cannot be the guiding figure to all these girls, but he can help them to find the future they dream of in some way or another.

( It’s the least he can do, considering it’s his hand that decides their immediate fate. )

When the present returns on-screen, it finds Royal’s CEO in his office, with a phone held up to his ear as he converses easily with the recognizable voice of a company senior, Noh Jihoon. “I’ll have the girls gather in the practice room to see you,” So Jisub tells him warmly, and all that’s heard in reply is the other entertainer’s affable agreement before the phone call ends.

The plan moves forward, the return to ‘hard work’ effective immediately as the word is given to the staff to have the girls assemble in their building’s practice studio in the following week. The scene is set with all awaiting the CEO’s arrival, and he enters alone into the studio to take a commanding position in front of the convened group. “Did you enjoy your time out?” he asks of them good-naturedly, genuinely interested to hear the responses and to see for himself the way the fresh air has brightened their countenances. “Good, good.”

“As I told you before, the challenges will continue for you starting this week. There is one more task I will ask of you before the finale,” he explains to the girls with a controlled expression, “and in the finale challenge, you will return to your roots to perform on the stage for me and the audience. From the two groups that perform on that final stage, only one will get to debut as the future members of Royal’s new group, Luxe.” Jisub pauses to let the revelation of the group name sink in before he continues. “But, before we get to that, there’s one last test for each one of you.”

He motions towards the door and Noh Jihoon enters, as handsome and as well-dressed as he is known for being on television. The singer nods his head towards the group of girls and addresses So Jisub with even more appreciation for being invited here. The attention returns to the CEO as he clears his throat and continues with his explanation. “For your next challenge, you will be individually acting out scenes with this sunbae to test your chemistry and performance on camera. As idols, releasing MVs for every comeback is a must and more than one of you will be asked to act in scenes that lend credibility to the song’s story.” His lips curve into an encouraging smile. “Jihoon here has agreed to be your acting partner and I will be overseeing your filmings personally.” He adds on, “It’s not always that you’ll get this opportunity to work with an esteemed sunbae, so I highly suggest you enjoy this experience to the fullest.”

“And yes,” Jisub throws in before the question can be asked, “I will be eliminating one last person before the finale challenge. Everyone do your best, and I will see you again soon.”

EPISODE 6, Writing Prompt:

As So Jisub explained at the end of the episode, this next challenge is aimed to test the individual contestants’ acting abilities for hypothetical scenes as usually seen in an idol group’s comeback (and debut) music videos. The selected scenes for this challenge are the same for every girl and are taken from a previously-released MV by Royal’s senior group, SG Wannabe. As these scenes are merely intended as a challenge for the show, they will not be officially released to the public and are meant for in-show feedback only.

The scenes you will be asked to act out with Noh Jihoon will come from SG Wannabe’s MV, “One Spring Day.” Just like in the MV, there will be a bedroom set prepared for the acting scenes and a script given so that you may understand the flow and actions required of the scenes. On the day of recording, a director will be present, as well as a camera operator, lighting crew, and a stylist, as well as So Jisub himself who will oversee everything’s smooth progression to simulate the real nature of film set. You will have time during the week to practice by yourselves and with each other (from November 15th to the 22nd), but rehearsals with Noh Jihoon will happen on one day, November 23rd, from 8AM to 11PM. Each girl will get an hour to rehearse as many times as they like with him, with a break occurring at 1PM and 5PM for rest. The actual filming with Noh Jihoon will happen on November 24th and 25th, with girls split up alphabetically and in half (six girls on the first day, and five on the second) to get things moving quickly. You will only have a half an hour each to film with Noh Jihoon on your day, so make it count!

BLOG#3: REMIX

For this week, we were tasked to remix something (i.e., an object, a place, etc.) or turn a thing from its original form to another type of form. But for this blog, I decided to relate the topic of remixing from my personal experience of Cultural Adoption. I’m going to talk about how I managed to adopt Canadian values and social activities and remix them with my own culture (filipino culture).

To give you a little bit of a background, I grew up in the Philippines, and have spent most of my life there. If you ask me, I think that there are some differences that can be pointed out between Canadian culture and Filipino culture. For example, when it comes to holiday traditions, in Canada, we celebrate Halloween as a day where children go door to door trick or treating to get candies. While in the Philippines, when it’s Halloween, we don’t do trick or treating. Rather, we visit our passed relatives, families or friend’s grave and stay overnight beside them (to mourn and to say prayers).

Living here in Canada for the past 10 years has definitely made me adopt some of the Canadian values/culture and somewhat remix it with my own culture. For example, in food culture, western and asians have different types of food. In the Philippines, we would eat rice with everything. Rice for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even snacks. We would usually eat them with cured meats or stews, while here in Canada, people do not usually eat rice as often as we do. People eat more westernized types of food (i.e., steak, mashed potatoes and greens). I noticed that as I lived here in Canada, I have been accustomed to eating western type food but every now and then, I would get cravings for rice. So sometimes I would eat foods that people here would normally eat alone with some rice. (i.e., split pea soup with rice or poutine and some rice (my friends think that this is the weirdest thing that they heard. Some say it’s a disgrace to poutine. But I like it).

Another example would be holiday traditions. Here in Canada, people celebrate Christmas on the 25th; In the morning, people open presents, then have Christmas dinner in the evening. While in the Philippines, we celebrate Christmas on the night of the 24th, (9pm-12am). During the night of the 24th, we celebrate Noche Buena (traditional family dinner) with families/relatives. Then we do some exchanging of gifts, and basically rest for the whole day of the 25th. Living here in Canada definitely influenced and changed the way we celebrate Christmas. We still keep our tradition of celebrating Noche Buena on the 24th but have adapted to the Canadian Christmas tradition as well. So what we do is we celebrate and have a feast on the night of the 24th (maybe around 11pm/12am), but instead of doing some gift-giving after the dinner, we wait till the morning of the 25th (around 6am) to open presents, and sometimes have a second Christmas dinner on the night of the 25th. The hours in between the dinner and the opening of presents were usually spent by hanging around with family, chatting, singing, drinking or playing all sorts of games.

(2018 christmas)

v late christmas review: It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Or at least it's supposed to be.

It's 8:11PM on the 25th of December, and all that's running through my mind is "Is this it?" Is this the extent of the so-called holiday cheers?

It's my first christmas away from my friends and the strangely choking comfort of our home in the province. I originally planned to beg that my sisters let me come home to the province so I can, like, I don't know, wallow in sadness alone in the darkness of my room, I guess? But then Mama decided to spend the holidays in our Manila home so I guess that blew everything. I could've gotten my way and got the chance to come home if not for Mama's sudden decision. Christmas would've been better at home. Yes, it'd be a bit morbidly sad, like me-staring-into-the-sea-alone-at-3 sad, but I'd be home and everything would've been better. I could've spent time I longed for so much with my friends.

The past year, all I've ever continuously and unconsciously done is try to grab hold of something to keep me above sea level, both literally and figuratively. Looking back (w0wzer 2018 wrap up) to all the months I've been here in this fucking concrete monstrosity of a city and to all the years I've spent in the province, I can confirm that this year holds the grimmest of times I have ever had in my very short, barely lived life. I guess this is the charm of the city.

I still feel the "newbie welcome" chokehold I got from my first days here. It's still in its continuing stride to completely choke the life out of me, day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute and second by second. The slightest upside to this chokehold is actually it just making it easier for me to cry out in silence. I unconsciously cry a little more every time the pressure on my neck increases in gravity. It is but noticeable yet I feel it all. It makes these cute little ripples of fibrillation inside my heart which are worrying and at the same time comforting. It is such a weak skill--finding comfort in everything, that even in the worst of circumstances I still choose to lay my head back and find the slightest comfort off of it and to foster it and make it grow. All my years, this is how I've chosen to build perspective.

Mama and I, together with two of my sisters, watched Bohemian Rhapsody on the 23rd. It was a good film. Not that pleasing but it was a good waste of time. It made me feel like it's okay that my life's shit right now. And that it's also okay that my family couldn't care less about what I truly want. I'm still so young. There's no need to rush towards a representative turning point. Even if I'm only meant to live 'til 29, I've still got a little over 10 years ahead of me. I'm doing pretty good. Although I get it that I'm no Freddie Mercury, musician extraordinaire. I'm just me, a literally struggling singular cactus surrounded by beautifully blooming flowers. I get it, I suck.

To be honest, the only cheers I've seen, just yet, through the holidays is me clinking a glass of alcohol with myself.

After the storm. BBT Pavilion 25th May 2017

Feeling as fresh and alert as a toddler taking its first steps we head off towards the airport. Picking a later flight time was definitely a winning choice! Making the most of the 60 minute flight time, I took the opportunity to power nap. I only fell off the drinks lap tray twice. Apologies to the gentlemen sat next to me. The weather forecast was not wrong. Heavy rain. We shall overcome. Tesco value poncho all the way. The rain made for a cold morning. Thankfully we were actually under a covered area. By mid morning Laura had already been to Target for extra layers, and purchased for us a super fluffy fleece blanket, #partylikeapineapple It was indeed another lifesaver. This time lunch was hand delivered in the form of Burger King by our buddy Kent. As four people had already warned us that Camden has the highest crime rate in the whole of the states. It left us no desire to want to explore the neighbourhood for food. The high level of police presence was very reassuring. Thank God for portapotty number two, (don't even think about even entering number one). It wouldn't be a blog entry without feedback on doors to green. Outside barriers had been put up early in the afternoon and we all sat happily in the line. We knew about the small bag rule that came into force for this show so had all bases covered..... Or did we. There was also BAGLESS lanes, plus a bag lane. BAGLESS being the majority choice. Thanks to NJ Laura I was entering the pit on a Stubhub American Express business card under the name of Emma.... Wot no ID! What could go wrong. All afternoon we could see security in the lobby getting their uniforms and instructions. We had great confidence in the venue. Come 6pm disorder came, a security lady said the credit card lane was on the right only??? Surely not so, the entire gig was credit card entry, I did not believe her. Then the doors opened, only to fool us, as they decided it would be better to push us back onto the road to start the wanding. Some lanes had started to be let in, then security got right shirty and said doors weren't green and stopped any further entries. After the lamest wanding ever, credit card entry actually went smoothly. Too good to be true. Two women, sat behind a desk, form a line to get your wrist band...... She checks the ticket, rips it in half, writes on the back, writes on a list, and then hands it over to the other wristband lady. A mass of people descend on the desk, so much for that orderly queue. Turns out also that they were still sound checking and we were actually in a holding zone now. Fast forward 20 mins with anxious people pushing towards some steps. Finally we are let in. It was a mass bundle to the barrier. What fun. Some people happy, some not so. Kevin Garratt, very good again, growing in confidence. Marcus and Ben joined him again. Always an added bonus. We could see the sky getting darker and darker outside, and we were well aware of the predicted thunder....... A change to the opening number Snake Eyes is back! Then LLM, then OMG.... It's only BABEL!!!! This had already made my evening. Back to Wilder Mind and White blank page, and then when Marcus starts to make his way up to the drums for Lover of the Light, the lights come up, and management announce that the show is being stopped on the grounds of Safety. Thunder and lightning was on way and the lawn crowd were to make their way safely to the pavilion for shelter. Boy they weren't wrong! It bucketed down, and there was a good light show as well. After about ten mins of waiting around, a fight broke out again in the pit! Security ejected 3! Don't drink and fight chaps! 20 mins into the stoppage, Marcus appears on stage and said don't get excited it was going to be another 15 mins. Make that 30! The venue curfew time was officially 11pm, we had thought the worst and that the set list would be cut, but NO we were to get the full set! Happy days. They smashed their way through, Marcus saying how they took the time out while everyone was sheltering to "discuss the best quality show they could do..... And get pissed!" A change of line in Ghosts, "you saw my pain, washed out in the mother fucking rain" Blind is now a firm favourite, as is "If I say.... Morning, surely it’s the middle of the night

It wasn’t that early really, though 6am on a Sunday is really middle of the night. You don’t really get a sleep in when you become a parent – well, hoping for them when they are both teenagers.

So, go up, went downstairs, did breakfast, then sat in the armchair with a blanket on me snoozing a little while little Mr watched some TV.

Advanced karate day

Not so little Miss had an advanced karate session day today, so they went off just after 10am to that. Me and little Mr went out to the Air Museum, did a little chilling and then I cooked a nice big Sunday roast for when my wife and daughter got back.

Little Mr has been in one of those on and off miserable moods this weekend. Yesterday he had a mini meltdown, today too. Think its more about not getting his dinner the exact moment he wants it. Still, there were some good bits too.

After lunch, we went to walk it off

After we had had lunch, and a nice apple pie, we decided to walk a bit of it off. So, we went out to an area for short walk, lots of dog walkers go there. There’s also a park where we spent 10 mins.

Was quite a nice day really all things considered, even if a little chilly.

After our walk we came home, did a light dinner and it was time for the kids to have baths before bed. Once they were done it was time to relax before bed.

Bedtime again

Little Mr seemed to be tired, at least he was yawning. We put him to bed at 7pm, however, he wasn’t happy with that. He seems to fight it when he’s tired, trying to stay up later by having meltdowns, banging and keep coming out of his bedroom.

We spend quite a lot of time returning him to his bedroom until he finally gives in and nods off. This is the reason we have had a sleep clinic visit, he reluctance to go to sleep. It’s even, at times, taken till 11pm or 12am.

Some of you may go through this too. The funny thing is, that, when we had our meeting and we ran through what we had done to try and resolve the issue – they told us that everything we had done is what they would have told us. So, now it’s onto the stage to see if he needs help nodding off – though that is something they have to have meetings on before prescribe.

What have I done so far?

I arrived here Sunday the 30th of August 2020.

Day One: I put my things in the hostel, changed and went for a walk down las canteras. Extra hot day. chilled in the shade and got something to eat. You have to wear a mask everywhere you go here cause of the pandemic. So its a bit difficult to get used to especially since its alway super hot here!  After having ate a big (but thin) pizza and having had a Tropical con Limon (habing forgotten i cant drink as on antibiotics) i then took a long chilled walk to my favourite part of las canters are some ice cream chiiled then decided i should go for a swim! Was amazing so thankful to be back and be able to swim in the ocean! absolutely love it. 

In the evening i cam back to the hostel ate and met my new roommate (an elderly woman from romania with very “interesting” view on life and people) and went bed super early as felt shattared from the early wake up and travels.

Day two:

I met up with a friend for breakfast. He is a very interesting character. Loves his attention and has a flare but the dramatics I’m still figuring him out tbh but he seems legit. After breakfast and a nice catching we decided to walk down to a nice part of the beach so we could chill and then go for a swim. After which we were once again hungry and had some lunch. He recommended I try a “croymisuir?” (not sure on that spelling) which i did not like and didnt sit well with me. we then decided the day was so lovely we should just make it a full beach day. Later we met some of his friends, which i was very nervous about but they were super nice. I then left to go SuperDino (best grocery shop ever!) then got a taxi back as felt unwell and queezy.

I got back had my salad and then came dow to chill and have a shower..... afterwhich i got dress and then proceeded to vomit everything i ate that afternoon! I felt so unwell I’m not sure if it was the thing i ate for lunch or the fact that i spent the whole day in the sun but it was not good. i then went to bed only to get up in an hour to vomit once more. Thankfully Carolina a lovely hostel worker gave me a towel to wet and put on myself to help me cool down and feel better. This helped tremendously and i was able to sleep for most of the night waking up feeling much better.

Day Three:

I decided today would a chill day as didnt want to risk getting worse. So i showered dressed and did some of my TEFL course. Spent the day chilling with some peeps and took it easy. Ordered some chinesse food for dinner and ate it in the terrace with some newones. Early night again as still not quite adjusted to time here. Over all a quite day.

Day Four:

Woke up early, showered, dressed (did makeup) and attended ministry meeting (iykyk). Went really well, got given my own territory. I then chilled for a bit before meeting up with Lucia a friend here on the island. We went fishing although unsuccessful was great fun. Had some lunch in Las Arenas Mcdonals (spanish mcdonalds is the bomb!!) then we headed to the beach to chill before going for a swim. sea was rough but sooo much fun!! I spent the day speaking spanish which is great for me. Lucia was a great help correcting me when i needed. We then said out goodbyes and i returned to the hostel for shower and then dinner. There was soooo much seaweed in my bikini it covered the shower floor! I came to eat my dinner downstairs with Carolina (lovely hostel worker) and some of the other guests here. We listened to music sang and danced until 11pm which is “quite time” here. I then headed but bed but unfortunately for me my RLS (restless leg syndrome) majorly acted up and i got little to no sleep and as i was just falling asleep my room mates phone went off at like 4 am i then got up at 7:45ish as couldnt sleep.

Day Five (pt1):

Woke up early as couldnt sleep. Went up and had breakfast with some others. then chilled, applied for various jobs and pretty much filled this in. Also paid for an extra month here. so my last “day” is on the 25th of October. Spoke to Laura  (my sister) and mum for a bit. Tonight we will have a “family” dinner here at the hostel with almost everyone. Italian food by an Italian man so Should be good! My back is peeling already so am avoiding the sun a little today but will be popping to las arenas to get some bits and bobs. 

I guess i will pt 2 of Day Five tomorrow once it’s actually happened.

This is really more for me to keep everything fresh in mind to look back on in future but you can also keep up with my new adventures on here and if you have any advise for me whether that be for jobs, blogs or anything else please do messag me so that i can improve things on my side. 25th February Evaluation

Did you Meet your Aims?

I met my aims despite being very rushed for time due to the length of the talk and the introduction of another couple of tasks that I hadn't blocked into my schedule. I managed to do this by using my lunch break to get some of the work created and then I also finished things off after work at about 11pm. It was a bit late but I wanted to get the work done completely so that I don't get behind. I actually achieved a lot today and although it may not look like it, all the small things like updating the bibliography and the blog posts take a while to do in-between all of the research tasks. 

Is the Work Good Quality?

I am especially happy with how in depth my research is and how much it contributes to the development of my ideas. Its clear to me how doing research well can really positively effect the flow of creativity and inspiration. I am also really pleased with how the A1 map turned out despite being hurried to finish it and actually being a bit reluctant to do it. 

Anything you Would Change?

Id prefer it if I could have gotten the time to print the images for my research page and then it would be visually finished and presented the way that I intended for it to be. I still like how it looks and the images aren't the main focus of the page but they definitely add to the understanding and I know that I will be able to print them at a later date anyway. Other than that I just wish that I could have put more design detail into the timeline page as it definitely looks a bit bare and underdeveloped. However, I have to rationalise my time with this project and the way that it is now does its purpose. 

Plan?

I am at an interview tomorrow so my main plans are to just make sure I am 100% prepared for that with all of my portfolio and wiring examples.

First Year Done

2018 is pretty much done! As is my first year of CMP. It’s crazy to think that there’s only two years left... I’ll be sure to make the most of them! With this post i’ll be going through the final stretch at the end of semester 2, and looking at a bunch of photos i found recently which date back to April this year. In my previous post I said i’d hopefully post something after the 25th. Well... here we are a month and a half later. On to it!

As of writing this intro on the 16th of December it’s somewhat of a blur as to what happened in the last couple weeks of the semester. After my Folly Foley post a bunch of things changed in rapid succession. I got week long extensions for VFX and 3D Modelling, and Sound as I was running out of time and nothing was done. That week (week 12) I attended fewer classes than I had for the duration of the semester. Taylor had his week 12 set out in such a way that it was possible to skip on of his lectures which was a huge help. That Friday (19th of October) I felt somewhat down as it would’ve been great to have pretty much everything done by then, but I kept trudging on. 

In the days leading up to our group’s transmedia pitch I mostly worked on my other stuff but made sure to stay in contact with Paris and Hunter. We had a final meeting not long before the pitch, either in week 12 or 13, and settled on what we were going to do and then left it until the day of the pitch. They both wanted to use a script to be sure everything would fit in, but at the time I was against the idea almost entirely. In retrospect it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, and they both did a fantastic job. All in all our pitch went super well, Kevin loved the ideas presented, provided good feedback (as usual), and we managed to score an A+. What a relief! 

I seem to remember that i finished SND at some point earlier than VFX or 3DM but i could be remembering that wrong. In fact as I type this I can remember standing in 1D12 alone in the dark playing through our movie soundtrack over the projector and loud speakers to make sure our levels weren’t fucked on the night before I was due to hand it in. In retrospect, my time management was completely fucked! But I got it to a point where I was satisfied with everything in the ProTools project. I cleaned it up, prepared a package, and had it on a USB ready for 11AM on Friday the 26th. I met up with Mereana and Paris, and we headed in to a mixing booth with Neil. He actually really liked it! Another massive relief. There were a couple of details we had put in that no other group had which made us feel good. There were some sounds which we just completely ran out of time to record, but I managed to keep all the sounds we used originating from our own recordings. Some of them sounded strange, but some worked really well and it was satisfying to listen through the completed product. I wrote up a big document with details on all the sounds the night before, and Neil responded to that later with fantastic feedback (as always) and suggested things we could do to improve it. The same thing happened with the Formative assessment, where he even created a new ProTools session with a little tweak he made to one of our sounds. He’s a fantastic teacher. Mereana and Paris were also the best teammates I could’ve had. I failed to show up to so many recording sessions and meetings (for Transmedia too) and they still persisted with me which was really cool of them. They were also great when it came to talking to Neil during our presentation, they made it easy which was the best. Same goes for Hunter and Paris again with Transmedia too. 

After the pitch and sound presentation, it was time to move on to completing VFX and 3D Modelling. I took a short break, then headed over to K3 and set up camp. As expected, K3 was busy as fuck! Many people were in there finishing their stuff, and it wasn’t just first years but some second and third years as well. I remember starting with VFX. It was the one I was finding the hardest at the time as the assessment was so vague, and as a result I hadn’t properly started something which was worthwhile. After a bunch of different prototypes I came up with the idea to create a similar effect to a move by Katara in ATLA where she stops the rain in it’s tracks, creating a dome of water, turning it into sharp ice shards and sending it careening towards a target. I didn’t get quite that far with it, but I ended up creating an interesting effect where a fractured object explodes, the pieces fly into the air but are stopped in their tracks, and then are thrown into the ground. Looking back, it would’ve been fun to expand on with some animation and cinematography but there was no way I could’ve done it all in one day of course! 

By the time I was ready to render I was actually running out of time. To my knowledge K3 closed at 1am so I started creating a manual render farm out of the now empty computers there. I set up 4 computers all running Arnold renders at once doing different portions of the video. It was awesome! To figure out a networked render was the dream but I had no time to figure it out at that moment. I managed to get down to 100 frames left before 11pm when the awesome security guy came along and politely told us that the labs actually close at 11pm and that we really should clear off before then. I stopped my renders just before 11pm, packed all my shit, and cleared off. I was sorta bummed but I wanted to keep going and get this sucker done otherwise it’d get in late. I set up my laptop that I’m writing this on in the coldest part of my room in such a way that allowed for plenty of airflow, and just let it whirr on while I fell asleep. 

By this point I had actually finished 3D Modelling, I ended up creating a hand painted, slightly low poly Toad from the Mario Bros. series. Unlike VFX, I had been working on this model previously so it was mostly creating maps, painting, and rendering while I simultaneously worked on VFX. We were using Quixel to paint and man that program is a pain in the arse! I used to be a staunch defender of it in light of Substance Painter but man at this point I’d go over to Substance any day, Ddo really got on my wick. I managed to complete it and hand it in on time, unlike VFX which I ended up handing in the next day.

The last thing I did was write up my individual report for Transmedia on the 27th and... that’s it! First year was done. It felt strange at the time and for at least a month afterwards too. I felt completely devoid of purpose, for a while when hunting for holiday work I felt the same way. I was still hanging out with friends which was what saved me from feeling any worse than I already was. It took me a long while to figure this all out too, it was the end of November when I realised that I have a need to create things constantly otherwise I feel like garbage! I also had the daunting task of moving out the cube ahead of me after all of my uni work was done. I managed to land my new place on the 12th of November and moved in at the end of that week on the 18th. 

Always interesting to see just how much garbage accumulates over the course of a single year.

At some point around the 22nd or 23rd I went and hung about Hayden’s room at the Cube for an entire weekend. We ate junk food for 4 days straight and just sat around doing fucking nothing but playing games and watching shows. It was kinda fun to begin with but it was what finally made me realise that to get myself out of my slump I was in I just had to create and do something. Anything! So I hauled arse out of there and started to make some changes. I stopped looking at social media. It sounds so obvious typing it out but MAN it took a lot of time out of my day. YouTube especially had the potential to scoop hours out of my day. YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram were all huge time sinks which I removed from my daily schedule. Of course this filled my day with... nothing. Around this time I was lucky enough to come across Lisa Kogawa’s Time Management Stuff when my friend Lauren reblogged it. I decided to use her method to fill my day with a bunch of projects which would keep me creatively busy over the holiday period. 

I went on a spur of the moment trip of Auckland for a week to relax and help me recoup, then as soon as I got back I was into cleaning my Cube apartment. I still hadn’t cleaned anything despite moving all of my shit out and the lease ended on the 8th of December. So both the 7th and the 8th were busy days for me but I got it done in the end, I had held on to my room until the very end and it was sad to see it go. I had many good times there and it was the perfect introduction to Wellington, student life, and university as a whole.

Ok, so this is a little complicated... Oct 2008 I had a car accident. My car was written off. My car was towed to a garage and was held there while the insurance company evaluated the damage. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I SAW MY CAR. Because the size of my excess (800) and the amount of damage matched the value of the car (800) I was advised it would be pointless to claim on the insurance and it was written off. The accident was my fault and I held my hands up and admitted it and the other party walked away with everything sorted. No suggestion of fraud and certainly nothing fraudulent on my part. Towards the end of 2008 my insurance company started falling off the radar, not returning my calls or my emails, letters etc. I repeatedly asked what I was supposed to do next (I'd never had an accident before and the whole process confused me because they kept giving me conflicting info) and where my car was. I was ignored (or given incorrect info). In the end I declared a SORN on the car and had so much going on in my personal life, I forgot about it, knowing the car was off the road.
