Ravi Kumar: Doping ban: No respite for shooter Ravi Kumar | More sports News

Ravi Kumar: Doping ban: No respite for shooter Ravi Kumar | More sports News
NEW DELHI: Commonwealth and Asian Games medallist, shooter Ravi Kumar’s hopes of making an early comeback to the competitive arena from his two-year doping ban has received a jolt after the appeal panel of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) dismissed the marksman’s plea to reduce his ineligibility period on compassionate grounds. NADA’s Anti-Doping Appeal Panel (ADAP) has rejected Ravi’s defence that he inadvertently consumed the banned drug propranolol — a beta blocker — for treating a bout of migraine and has upheld his suspension period, effective December 5, 2019, when he was originally sanctioned for his first-time doping offence. Ravi’s ban period will continue till December 4, 2021. Two panel hearings were held in Ravi’s matter on August 27 and 31, and the verdict was pronounced last week. He was tested during the Kumar Surendra Nath Memorial meet in May-June last year. During this time, Ravi will miss the New Delhi World Cup in March (19 to 28) next year, which has been declared as decisive by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) for qualification to the Tokyo Olympics. Ravi will also miss the South Korea (Changwon), Azerbaijan (Baku), Egypt (Cairo) and Italy (Leonato) World Cups in 2021, beside other national and international meets. It’s been learnt that Ravi’s legal team might knock on the doors of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to challenge the appeal panel’s decision. The lawyers believe that it was an inadvertent mistake on the shooter’s part and that he should be awarded the benefit of doubt. Also, the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) certificate was later provided to the authorities. Ravi had appealed against NADA’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel’s (ADDP) decision to ban him after he had failed to convince the jury about the presence of propranolol in his body.

BHIM-UPI TOISA: PV Sindhu shines brightest amongst sports winners for 2019 - Times of India
NEW DELHI: PV Sindhu, Rohit Sharma, Rani, Saurabh Chaudhary, Dutee Chand, Manu Bhaker, Bajrang Punia and Jaspal Rana are some of the prominent names that featured among the winners at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) powered by BHIM-UPI, which honoured the best performances in Indian sport in 2019 at a glittering awards function in Delhi on Thursday.
The who’s who of India’s sports fraternity were present at the awards ceremony, including one of the country’s most legendary sports persons, hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr, who was part of three of India’s gold-medal winning teams at the Olympics, besides being the manager of the squad that lifted the 1975 World Cup.
The event was also attended by a few very special guests – members of the 1980 Olympics gold medal winning hockey team, including captain V Basakaran, MM Somaiya, Mervyn Fernandes, Zafar Iqbal, Surinder Singh Sodhi and MK Kaushik.
Sindhu’s historic feat of becoming the first Indian to win the badminton World Championships remained unmatched and she was, therefore, named the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’, besides being the joint winner in the Jury’s Choice Award for ‘Badminton Player of the Year’ along with Sai Praneeth. Sindhu, who is currently ranked sixth in the BWF Rankings, completed a hat-trick by winning the ‘Unbreakable Spirit of Sport award’ as well. She is set to enter the Tokyo Olympics in an endeavour to improve on the women’s singles silver medal she won in Rio four years ago.
The men’s award in the badminton category went to 2019 BWF World Championships bronze medallist Sai Praneeth, who created history by becoming only the second man after Prakash Padukone to win a medal at the premier tournament.
The elite panel of jury members that picked the ‘Jury’s Choice Award’ in 19 categories included former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir; former India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia; hockey’s Olympic gold medallist Zafar Iqbal; Asian Games silver medallist and former athlete Ashiwni Nachappa; the first Indian paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics, Devendra Jhajaria; and Chief Editor of Times Internet Limited, Rajesh Kalra.
The ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award went to Rohit, who set the 2919 ICC World Cup ablaze with a record five centuries, besides crossing many more landmarks in the year. Women’s hockey captain Rani, whose goal helped the team qualify for its second consecutive Olympic appearance, was named the ‘Hockey Player of the Year’. She was also selected as the ‘Inspiration of the Year’ for her exploits in 2019, which also saw Rani winning the ‘World Games Athlete of the Year’ award — the first Indian and the first hockey player to achieve the feat.
In the men’s category for ‘Hockey Player of the Year’, Harmanpreet Singh was named the winner, as he turned into a leader of India’s defence, which played a major role in India achieving its best ever world rank of No. 4.
The ‘Team of the Year’ award was won by the men’s hockey team which achieved its best ever FIH rank of 4, besides qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. Meanwhile shooting star turned National junior coach Jaspal Rana was chosen as the ‘Coach of the Year’ for producing talents like Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary.
Incidentally, Chaudhary and Bhaker were joint winners in the ‘Shooter of the Year’ category. In a pathbreaking year for Indian shooting, the duo bagged the 10m Air Pistol mixed team gold in each of the four ISSF World Cups in 2019, besides bagging the Tokyo Olympics quotas in the men’s and women’s 10m Air Pistol.
The other male-female winning combos included Anish Bhanwala (shooting) and Lalremsiami (hockey) as the ‘Emerging Players of the Year’. While Bhanwala won a gold and a bronze in 25m Standard Pistol at the two 2019 World Cups, hockey striker Lalremsiami was named the ‘FIH Rising Star of the Year for 2019’ — a first for an Indian woman. In athletics, Tajinder Pal Singh Toor and Dutee Chand bagged the ‘Athlete of the Year’ awards. Shot-putter Toor won gold medals at the Asian Athletics Championships, while Dutee’s history-making moment came at the World Universiade, where she became the first Indian woman sprinter to win gold.
Amit Panghal and Lovlina Borgohain were the joint winners in the boxing category, while Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa were selected as the best squash players.
Panghal’s memorable 2019 included a golden hat-trick at the Strandja Memorial, Asian Boxing Championships and India Open; and his best moment came when he won his maiden medal, a silver, at the World Championships.
Borgohain too had a brilliant year in the boxing ring, where she claimed a bronze at the Strandja Memorial, gold at the Salam Umakhanov Memorial and a bronze at the World Championships.
Squash star Ghosal won the Asian Individual Squash Championships, which helped him enter the top 10 of PSA Rankings. Both those achievements were a first for an Indian male squash player. Chinappa, on the other hand, defended her Asian Individual Squash Championships crown and then won a record record 17th title at the National Squash Championships.
Top Indian wrestler Punia started 2019 by winning the gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships. Later in the year, his consistency at the international level earned him the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. At the World Championships, he had to settle for a bronze medal, but it helped him bag an Olympic quota for India in the 65kg freestyle category. Vinesh had a successful run in 2019, which culminated with her maiden medal (bronze) at the World Championships and a quota place at the Tokyo Olympics.
Archers Deepika Kumari and Abhishek Verma were also among the winners. Deepika won gold at the 2019 Asian Championships and with it an Olympic quota in women’s recurve.
Mirabai Chanu made a terrific return from injury in 2019, with gold medals at the EGAT Cup and the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. Sathish Sivalingam was the male winner in the weightlifting category.
At the World Championships in September 2019, Chanu improved on her own national record and came agonisingly close to a podium finish before settling for a fourth-place finish in the 49kg category. In the process, she became the first woman weightlifter from the country to breach the magical mark of 200kg.
Among the other ‘Jury’s Choice’ award winners were billiards and snooker player Sourav Kothari, chess star R Pragnanandha and football icon Sunil Chhetri.
In para-sports, shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Manasi Joshi were the jury’s pick as winners for their feats at the 2019 World Championships, where they both won gold medals in the singles categories becoming world champions.
Bhagat became a force to reckon with in 2019, winning twin gold medals at the Para-Badminton World Championships in the men’s singles (SL3 category) and men’s doubles (SL3-4 category). An IIT graduate, Bhagat contracted polio as a 7-year-old but never let that impede his ambitions.
Joshi secured her maiden gold at the Para World Championship. An engineer by qualification, Manasi lost her left leg in an accident in 2011. She enrolled at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad in 2018 and since then has not looked back.
Some of the special awards given on the occasion included the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Bhaichung Bhutia, ‘Mentor of the Year’ to India’s national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and ‘Youth Icon of the Year’ to Vijender Singh, the Olympic-medal winning boxer who turned pro a few years ago.
Also, the state of Odisha was conferred with the award for ‘Change Agent of the Year’ for its contribution towards sports, and the Reliance Foundation was named the ‘Corporate Supporter of the Year’.

Olympic Shotgun: India's Biggest Medal Prospects in Shooting Events
In the previous part of this article, we had a look at Indian rifle shooters who have been performing consistently well on the world stage and are touted as favorites in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic. In this part, we will have a look at Indian Pistol sports shooters who have made a big impact on the world stage in the current Olympic 2020 cycle.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Shotgun fans can book Olympic Shotgun Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Pistol sports shooting historically has not been a constantly fruitful event for India. We have had success in pistol events with shooters like Samaresh Jung and Jaspal Rana at the Asian and Commonwealth Games in the past but they were never able to translate this success at the Olympic.
At the 2012 Olympic games, Vijay Kumar won India its first Olympic medal in pistol shooting when he won a silver medal in a 25-meter rapid fire pistol event. After Vijay Kumar’s success, there was an advent of pistol shooters in India.
Pistol shooters like Jitu Rai and Gurpreet Singh started to perform consistently well at the world stage in the last Olympic cycle (’12-’16). Among women, Heena Sidhu showed flashes of brilliance on a few occasions but she lacked consistency. At the Rio Olympic, however, none of the Indian pistol shooters were able to handle the big match pressure and they returned home without a medal.
But since the 2016 Olympic, the Indian pistol shooters have made giant strides at the world stage. The Indian pistol shooting team has definitely improved over time, especially in 10-meter events. Let us have a close look at India’s medal prospects in various events of pistol shooting.
India’s performance in the 10-meter air pistol event for men has been brilliant in the current Tokyo Olympic cycle. Shooters like Abhishek Verma, Saurabh Chaudhary, and Shahzar Rizvi have successfully taken over the baton from Jitu Rai and have consolidated India’s position as one of the best in this event.
His transition from junior to senior level was very smooth. He started his 2019 campaign with a gold medal at the 2019 ISSF World Cup, New Delhi with a world record score in the finals and in the process won himself an Olympic 2020 quota place.
His next outing was the finals of the prestigious ISSF World Cup, Munich where he broke his own record from the New Delhi World Cup to further, strengthen his claim as the world’s best pistol shooter over the 10-meter range. Currently ranked 4th in the world, he is certainly India’s best bet at the Tokyo Olympic in this event.
Abhishek Verma booked India’s second Summer Games quota in this event when he won a gold medal at the 2019 ISSF World Cup, Beijing. He recurrent his gold medal-winning performance at the 2019 ISSF Rio World Cup. He is currently ranked second in this event and can be a medal prospect in this event at the Olympic 2020 if he carries on his scintillating form from 2019.
India’s domination in this event can is determined by the fact that Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Vema won gold medals in all the World Cup series events of 2019 in 10-meter Air Pistol for men (both winning two Gold medals each). We can expect at least one of them to add a medal to India's Tokyo Olympic medal tally.
Olympic 2020 supporters can get Olympic Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. Olympictickets2020.com is the most consistent source to book Olympic Packages.

Indians Who Have Qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020
India, the country of 1.3 billion people, has historically struggled to make a mark in the Olympic Games. But in the last decade or so, especially after Abhinav Bindra’s Gold medal, efforts have been made to improve the nation’s performance in one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Indian.
Men’s 20 km Walk
K. T. Irfan will participate in the men’s 20 km race walking. The 29-year old was the first Indian track and field athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics back in March. Irfan clocked 1 hour 20 minutes 57 seconds at the 2019 Asian Race Walking championship in Japan to clear the Olympic qualification criteria by just 3 seconds. He finished 11th in the competition, 2 minutes and 42 seconds behind the gold medallist.
Archery
After a no-show at the Rio Olympics, Indian men’s archery team made sure they do not miss out on yet another Olympic participation. The team of Atanu Das, Tarundeep Rai, and Praveen Jadhav qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with an exceptional performance at the 2019 World Archery Championship.
Indian women’s archery team, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the Olympics at the World Championship. But Deepika Kumari and co will get another shot at the qualification in November in the Asian Continental Qualification Tournament.
Shooting
After Hockey and Wrestling, Shooting has brought most medals for India in Olympics. And interestingly, all of them have come in the 21st century. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won the first medal in shooting in 2004, Abhinav Bindra’s historic Gold came in 2008, followed by Vijay Kumar’s silver and Gagan Narang’s bronze in 2012.
Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela (10 m Air Rifle)
Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela were the ones to get the ball rolling for India for the Tokyo Games. They were the first two Indian athletes to qualify for the Olympics. At the 2018 World Championship, where top four qualify for the Olympics, the duo made the most of that opportunity.
Saurabh Chaudhary (10 m Air Pistol)
A 17-year old sensation, Saurabh Chaudhary has set the stage on fire in the past two years. He won the Gold medal in the 2018 Youth Olympics and became the youngest Indian Gold medallist at the Asian Games.
Chaudhary qualified for the Tokyo Olympic with a gold medal in 2019 ISSF World Cup in New Delhi. He followed it with yet another Gold in the third phase of the World Cup in Munich..
Abhishek Verma (10 m Air Pistol)
India’s second participant in the 10 m air pistol event, Abhishek Verma also booked his ticket to Tokyo with a gold medal in the second phase of the ISSF World Cup in Beijing..
Divyansh Singh Panwar (10 m Air Rifle)
Yet another wonder kid, 16-year old Divyansh Singh Panwar booked his Olympic quota with a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi. Divyansh, who trains at the same shooting range in Rajasthan where Olympic medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore once did, missed the gold by just 0.4 points. But it was enough for him to start working for the next year’s mega event.
Rahi Sarnobat (25 m Pistol)
After missing Rio Olympics due to injury, nothing could stop Rahi Samobat from booking a place for the Tokyo Games. The 28-year old won the Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Munich and will be on her flight to the Olympics for the second time.
Manu Bhaker (10 m Air Pistol)
It is safe to say that the future of Indian Shooting is in safe hands. After all, the 17-year old Manu Bhaker is the third teenager to qualify for the Olympics. Manu had an exceptional 2018, with a gold and silver at the Youth Olympics gold at the Commonwealth Games and two gold medals at the 2018 ISSF World Cup.
But in the 2019 World Cup, she missed out on a podium and had to settle for the 4th place after an equipment failure.

On the first day of the competition, Apurvi Chandela opened India’s medal account with a gold in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event. Apurvi and Anjum Moudgil had bagged two Olympic quotas in the event for India last year itself.

Olympic Shotgun: Making of Sharp Shooters in Olympic 2020 Games Race
Indian shooting regrouped itself in a brilliant fashion thereafter. Picking up the invaluable lessons from the Rio washout, it emerged as a world power and ensured the entry of 15 shooters for the Tokyo Olympic in the Olympic 2020 Games. Unlike Rio in 2016, which had 390 shooters, Summer Games will have only 360, which enhances the chances of everyone who makes it to the Games, to strike a medal or two.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Shotgun fans can book Olympic Shotgun Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
More than the number of entries, the Indian shooting asserted its strike power by topping the medals table in each of the four World Cups in rifle and pistol in Delhi, Beijing, Munich, and Rio in 2019. To cap the superb run, the Indian shooters also topped the medals table in the World Cup Finals in Putian, China.
In the year-end rankings, three Indian shooters Elavenil Valarivan, Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Saurabh Chaudhary were No.1 in the world and presented the ‘Golden Target’ in a nice function in Munich by the ISSF. The filtering of the shooters for the final was also tuned nicely by the introduction of decimal scoring in air rifle and prone events.
“I am a true supporter of the decimal scores in the qualification round. The qualification process was not sensitive enough for air rifle and prone,’’ said the Olympic champion, Niccolo Campriani of Italy.
Of course, the prone event was eventually taken off the Summer Games program. The double trap has also been eased out. And the 50-meter free pistol also gave way, to the idea of gender equality. As an equal number of women had to be given the chance to compete in the Tokyo Olympic, the ISSF introduced mixed air rifles, mixed air pistol and mixed trap as additional events in place of rifle prone, double trap and free pistol events.
World and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra faced a lot of fire, for being a part of the approval process, for the change, as the Chairman of the athlete's committee of the ISSF. “Bindra, this is the worst decision ever made in ISSF,” Harald Stenvaag of Norway, a winner of two Olympic medals and three-time World Champion was quoted as saying, on the removal of the rifle prone from the Summer Games.
I am not the driving force behind any decision. It is a collective recommendation which is due to be taken up by the executive committee and admin council. You can all rest assured that I will voice all your concerns and thoughts as I have always done, Abhinav Bindra had assured the shooting fraternity.
Interestingly, the introduction of mixed events has enhanced India’s chances on the global stage. Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker swept all the four gold medals in the World Cups this season. Manu, who is studying the first year in college, also won the Asian Championship gold with Abhishek Verma and the World Cup Finals gold in partnership with Russian Artem Chernousov.
“Indian shooting has gone beyond the iconic names. We have got a good bench strength,” Raninder was once quoted.
Divyansh Singh Panwar, Deepak Kumar, Apurvi Chandela, and Anjum Moudgil also won the World Cup medals in mixed air rifle, to assert India’s readiness to strike similar medals in the Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo. Indian the shooting was also strengthened by the conduct of many World Cups, the Asian Championship and the Tokyo Olympic qualifying event before the Rio Games, under the leadership of Raninder Singh, the president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).
This is the ideal way to supplement the phenomenal support, in terms of finance and infrastructure, that the government is providing. No wonder India has become a world-beater, nicely adapting to the changes along the way. Indeed, with its wide base, Indian shooting has been able to develop high-quality shooters.

India finish 2019 as number one shooting nation in world - other sports
On the back of its sparkling show through 2019, India finished the year as the top shooting nation in the world, leapfrogging Olympic heavyweights China and the USA.In terms of overall medals, the tally stood at 21 gold, six silver and three bronze as India topped all the Rifle-Pistol World Cups and Finals in a unforgettable year.A delighted National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh tweeted a screenshot of the International Shooting Sport Federation’s (ISSF) overall rankings for 2019. “Well done Team India,” he wrote. WELL DONE TEAM INDIA pic.twitter.com/mNiVejPYLR— Raninder Singh (@RaninderSingh) January 11, 2020 While India leads the standings with 30 medals overall, China is second with 11 gold, 15 silver and 18 bronze for a total of 44 podium finishes. The USA is placed third with 15 medals (six gold six silver and three bronze). The number of Olympic quotas, which now stands at a record 15, is not a only refection of the country’s rapid rise in the sport over the last one year but also sets up the shooters nicely for a record haul at the Tokyo Games, after the meltdown at Rio de Janeiro.Besides the shooters, the federation has also worked extensively towards bringing the sport to where it is today. Indian shooting’s best show at the Olympics remains the two medals won at London in 2012, but if the shooters’ exploits in recent months are anything to go by, the country can easily emulate or better that in Tokyo.
