i think part of what's so interesting is how june and athena are both positioned as fundamentally unable to write without "stealing." and this is a huge spectrum obviously, from the question of athena's right to write books about her family's trauma to june stealing athena's entire first draft to edit and publish under her own name. but there are also pretty egregious examples on both sides (athena using the details of june's rape for a short story immediately comes to mind) and june relies pretty heavily on that to make her case to the reader that what she did Wasn't So Bad, or at least that athena wasn't really a victim. and also the way it's so important to june that the reader understands that the last front never could have been the book it became without june's intervention, that it was transformative that that makes it at very least the same as what athena was doing.
but of course what june did wasn't the same, basically any reader is going to agree that despite her justifications june absolutely crossed the line, but where does the line fall? i think some people might say that athena had crossed the line too - even in her books that pulled from her own family's history (and we hear about in-universe twitter discourse to that effect). yellowface is pretty clearly pulled from some other recent book community dramas like kidneygate and that cat person story where a good deal of people felt that the authors involved had no write to write stories based on other people's lives at all. but then we have june's debut, which was hers and hers alone, pulled from her own childhood, and it just.. wasn’t that good*
of course, june comes to racist conclusions about no one wanting to hear white women's stories, but there is something interesting about june's inability to create good art when she pulls from her own life, and her success when she works with other people's. i saw someone joke that june would be happier writing fanfic which like. lmao yeah honestly, but also i think the book does address this in a way when june's agent suggests she writes ip work (basically, legally profitable fanfic). i feel like this gets positioned as essentially the same as june searching athena's notebooks for ideas, and with athena interviewing victims of wars to use their trauma for her books. none of these ideas belong to them, the stories they create are not theirs but they ARE theirs because if they hadn't written them down, maybe no one else would have
i'm obsessed with the scene where an old man tells june he's glad the book was written and published because it's the first time he's seen his family's story told, and even reassures her when she admits she's not sure she was the right person to tells the story. of course he doesn't know the full context behind june's actions and it doesn't make what june did okay at all regardless, but it is a testament to the complicated effects even really heinous actions can have. the last front probably would never have been published if june didn't steal it - maybe there's a chance another author could have gotten permission to finish it and have it published under both their names - but it's more likely it would have been a go set a watchman, a messy first draft that just tarnishes the author's legacy. it doesn't make what she did okay, and in this conversation about the lines around theft I'm definitely not trying to say that june and athena had equal rights to the last front. aside from the Stealing The Whole First Draft of it all, there's obviously something to be said about parts like june erasing some of the most horrific parts of the actual historical racism in the last front for being "too heavy handed." june may have done research - but she doesn't have athena's lived experience as an asian woman and she arrogantly refused to have a sensitivity reader even look at her manuscript. it's not that june is right at all in her argument - but the spectrum she evokes when arguing that she is is so interesting and I feel like the book did a great job exploring it
*i'm running with the idea that june's debut wasn't very good for the sake of this train of thought but it's probably worth taking that idea with several grains of salt. one critique i do have of the book is the way her debut is used to show how the lack of support mid-list authors receives sets them up for failure vs a lucky few authors that publishing decides will be successes and therefore turns them into successes. the fact that one of these authors is able to then produce a smash hit as her sophomore novel (even if it was stolen from a more successful author) muddies this a bit imo. like so ARE we supposed to believe that june's debut was just straight up bad? idk
thinking about yellowface.. aside from being an extremely good satire of the publishing industry (and a really biting condemnation of the racism within it) it also had such interesting ideas about the lines between theft and inspiration that goes into art without really coming to any firm conclusions itself. it’s been a few weeks since I read it but I keep thinking about it and chewing on some of the ideas that came up in different scenes

i have a lot of thoughts allready about the teaser little art thingamajijer that objectifieds tumblr released
Tumblr media
yknow this thing and the little fireworks in my head are going off thinking about what this means for them
weve been seeing their relationship/ situation getting alot more complex throughout the episodes, its been stated multiple they dont know how to feel about eachother, they dont really know what todo about eachother because neither of them has ever had to expeirience anything like eachother before which makes their scenario really intersting to think about the fact that im focusing on right now is the topic of caring for eachother nothing either of them has tried to touch before, even though yknow cough cough theyve almost died for eachother on multiple occasions, feed, tainted goods etc.
i think after roi were gonna have a lot more context on citrus and why yknow he is the way he is because theres clearlysome effect still on him from the events of silent neverland and i do think that does effect how he treats others and treats interactions between people, which makes him all the more complex. Chetser summarized it as characters doing bad things for a reason which i think summarizes citrus and spools relationship rlly well but again without contect of roi or this epsisode its really hard to tell, this is just me pshyco-analizing for a hot second

first guy picked us up, took us 7 miles to a stupid spot, but he had also picked up this german kid who we talked to for a bit and he was nice. second guy was a cop and took us to the county line, middle of fuckin nowhere but he gave me a couple MREs and i have to be honest i rlly like eating MREs. the flameless heater is so sci fi, and all the little drink mixes, delightful! and then i was dying my head was pounding and my feet hurt so bad so we gave up and slept in a little oak grove and she read a story to me. today we've walked like 10 miles and my feet hurt so fucking bad as soon as we get to az im becoming an ultralight kid. finally some guy drove us the like 10 more miles to the next town but he also left us in stupid spot and we had to walk another couple miles to this mcdonalds. oh but i found an almost full pack of newports on the side of the interstate this morning so god still loves me

Hi same anon from that one leafpin neg post burt I did a opssie so let me redo it
Leafpin and Fireoiny are such basic ass yuri and yaoi, I don't understand the appel or THE HYPE. Their the defenitave "let's ship the main hetero pairs as gay pairs ship!". People try to make LeafpinFireoiney the brightlights of Bfdi, THEY WILL NEVER BE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF BFDI .
Leafpin is fine- it's okay It's rlly boring and has barely anything going for it
Fireoniey is one I hate a bit more, because you could have something intersting with their enemies to lovers shitck, but that happens of screen and the two barely get anyone meaningful development from that. I wish more people tired to at least potray their friendgroup dynamic? Genrally all I get from it is "their just friends". Like the lightbirghts are fun because they have possibilites for "friendly conflict!" And just bickering. But all Firey/Pin/Leafy/Coiny friendgroup content potrays then as just friends, I mean it be nice if ppl made content that also added onto their dynamic with their past yadada but ig they don't.
(Dgmw fireafy sucks ass to, not coinpin thoguh my babies<3)
Imo there's just better yuri/yaoi out there yuri and yaoi that deserves way more love but isn't nearly as popular thank you
(ALSO NOT COINPIN I MADE THE OG ASK AT 2 AM I DIDN'T MEAN TO INSULT MY BELOVED I'M SORRY COINPIN)

The Magnus Protocol!!!
Fourth ep review!!
Oh i rlly rlly liked this one. Things are going on!! Emails are going to certainspeople and soooomeones gotta be sending them!! Intersting, veeeery intersting.
Very very fond of todays case. It felt slightly different in that the writer was not taken over by the forces that be but rather plying right into them knowingly almost. Casually becoming a serial killer to play music real good is a slay, id watch that documentary. He’d already killed to do so and perhaps thats why he was chosen. I hope the violin comes back, i was a big fan pf grifters bone when they toured (lmao). Also the fact its someones uncle confessing to murder after dying is SO fucking funny.
Gwens gettin some action!! I like that she seems to be getting her own storyline and that its to do with lena. The implication that gwen comes from money with a name like Bouchard is also incredibly intersting

⚡️ 💜 🗡 ⚡️ 💜 🗡 ⚡️ 💜 🗡
headcanons:
he is REALLY good at playing pretend! he will get rlly in to character and come up with these wild stories to play out with you!
he thinks its important you can be a kid but also that your learning always. he shows you how to forage, to write, to use magic, to defend yourself, and so on!
you help him take care of torgal >w< and also bother the chickens in the hideaway while your at it!!! hehe
he always has stories to tell! your not sure which ones r real and which he made up, but they are so intersting to listen too!
he is kinda not a good influence but he is fun! he swears and makes snarky jokes a lot, and lets you play in dirt and draw all over the hideaway and would be the kind to let you eat sweets before dinner xD
but still he gives good advice and is always trying to help guide you and make you feel better. its ok to make mistakes or need help with him!

childish and petty of me but i never rlly got into btr cuz i knew it was a musical show that was going to be pretty accurate with the music part and everyone around me was talkimg abt how hype the songs were but whenever i talk abt songs in shows i like it or talk abt my musical experience it just gets slept on
cannot blame anyone rlly cuz not everyone is into music that way or knows what to say but it still just feels like "oh its only intersting when a show does it" so it was a very lonely feeling paired with a kind ofbitter one
take those feeling paired with the wish fulfillment of btr where its "loner who cant communicate is given all the perfect situations to have the perfect friend group with the perfect common interests fulfillment" and it just left me feeling very sad

Oh, i dont mean to overstate potters cruelty or agency in this matter- he cant let charles or klinger go at all and its true that charles is a prick. But to me there always felt like there was a tension to me as a viewer where the show invites you to laugh at charles's and klinger's expense when they make attempts to leave that potter stops. Cus the show knows charles and especially klinger are very well justified in their desire to leave. To me it brings about this sort of intersting disonance, not in a bad way so much as a complex and interesting way that enriches the text. Potters the voice of reason and the authority figure the narrative defers to, especially in the later seasons, but his general feeling on these matters is resignation. "It is what it is" "it cant be helped." That resignation certainly isnt wrong or bad- hes being practical. But its hard to sympathize with it over hawkeye or klinger or even charles's rebellion.
As for going awol as an immoral act i suppose i was mostly thinking of various episodes in which people encourage a soldier to return to the front. I believe mulcahy encouraged a young man whod stolen a dead comrades identity in order to escape the army to return to the front. He also spent a whole episode trying to convincea kid who was trying to come home after his fiancee left him that he needed to return to the front. The show always shows characters being reluctant to do that sort of thing, but later on in the show i feel a real sense of resignation to that status quo. Idk if thats making sense but ive been thinking about it a lot. I feel like MASH's castwide emotjonal arc as a whole often concerns itself with the tension between rebellion (which runs the risk of being unrealistic or dangerous) and resigning yourself to reality (which runs the risk of being callous or despair inducing) i personally feel that the show tends to strike a really good balance, but theres something really interesting to me about the fact that, in my opinion, potter (who is loved by pretty much the whole staff and is generally considered the voiceof reason and wisdom) is also the most ardent voice of resignation if that makes sense? Hes wonderful and smart and more often than not hes right- rebellious acts are unrealistic theyre dangerous they cant be done without serious repercussions, the best way to do good is within the system and slyly- not because its the best way to do it but because it is the most effective way to do it without being destroyed by the powers that be. Him being smart or empathetic or reasonable doesnt make him any less oppositional to the spirit of spitfire rebellion that hawkeye embodies it. Potter dampens that. Perhaps thats by necessity for fear that hawkeye burns out, but to me that sort of effect feels more complicated than good or bad. Potter's mediating presence is an expression of care- he is a buffer between his unit and the cruel beurocratic military machine. But making the weight of the armys control easier to bear normalizes it- it puts a kind paternal face on the military authority they are all bring crushed by. The fact that he truly cares and is working within the system in the manner his is doesnt really lessen thar to me- which doesnt make potter villianous or wrongheaded so much as it complicates his approach at least to me. (Sorry a million billion words. Poter thesis to me- i love him i think hes great and his ideological position in the show is rlly interesting)
i don't think the narrative defers to potter as thee authority figure necessarily - he's the "good" army man and the show has to marry this with hawkeye's (and, in turn, the show's) anti army sentiments, which it does with various degrees of success
i do agree with everything else you said though! the mulcahy thing has always confused me a bit too, like sometimes they give him this black and white thinking and sometimes they give him complex moral problems (if i remember correctly, his opposition to the soldier who stole a dead man's identity was that the dead family won't ever learn that the man died, not that the soldier won't return to the front). and there's the episode where he tries to shelter a soldier who's AWOL simply because the soldier requested sanctuary

Been thinking so so much about like. Roleplaying with the emori gang.. but I rlly dunno what verse I wanna send.
Angel Sunny verse(angel sunny here is not an ordinary angel as some draw them to be: he's like- based off of the angels in EVA).
Eldritch Horror/CaveWeb verse (HELLSIBLINGS(HELLMARI & HELLSUNNY: HELLMARI canon look, and that one reddit post of HELLSUNNY - red skin, four arms etc), Angel brothers(Angel Kel & Angel Hero: like Rei and Kaworu from Eva, but still Hero and Kel), Oni/Animal mix Aubrey and Plant based Basil)
Or like- .. a new one I kinda did?? That DSAF AU post I made. Yeah. Been leaning more on that one tbh.. Emori gang meeting Suntrap(Sunny taking Dave's spot) and Businessman Kel(Kel taking Jack's spot). Also Phonehead Hero
Ough (sorry if that was a lot— damn)
Angel Sunny sounds very interesting… biblically accurate Sunny. Are the others like that?
Eldritch verse also sounds just as intersting… hell monster Snuuy and Mawi, biblically accurate Hero and Kel, Faesil and Onibrey! What are there personalities like?
I don’t know anything about DSAF, sorry.
