Straightwashing The Picture of Dorian Gray?
Two days ago, the Internet discovered a prospective Netflix adaption, that of The Picture of Dorian Gray into a tv show The Grays. (Deadline)
As the title entails, Katie Rose Rogers (writer) has made the choice to give the protagonist of Wildeâs novel a brother. She allegedly decided not to add a new Gray but to turn a pre-existing character into a relative of the oh-so-famous Dorian Gray: Basil Hallward.
The painter of the cursed portrait that contains and manifests all of Dorianâs flaws and villainy, the adoring artist infatuated with his muse and his beauty, one of the characters often analysed in queer studies of the novel, will be turned into Dorianâs brother.
Narrative license is a common occurence in the art of adaptation, but the writerâs choice raises some issues on the Internet considering the original novel, its impact on its authorâs life, as well as its importance in the field of research and its role in representing queerness in history.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1891 work of literature written by Oscar Wilde. The novel, itself derived from an early novella-length work, tackles the moral descent of Dorian Gray as it never takes shape on his forever-young angelic face (and thus going against the belief of physiognomic degeneration of its time) but instead taints a portrait made of him by a friendâthe aforementioned Basil.
Connoisseurs and those less interested in the works of Oscar Wilde tend to know at least two things about the author:
one, he wrote Dorian Gray;
two, he was a homosexual.
It is no secret that his novel is submerged by the homoerotic feelings the characters harbour towards one another. While the characters do not overtly engage in romanceâa feat which would have led to a bigger scandal than it already wasâthey do present characteristics that are outwardly associated with queerness. Be it Lord Henry and Dorian Gray taking on a mentor/mentee approach close to Greek pederasty (educational), or Basil and Dorian adopting the artist and muse situation-ship often reserved to male artists and their female objects of inspiration and idolatry, the male/male relationships in the book deviate from normative Victorian masculine and homophile behaviours and extend into unspoken homosexual territories.
In the case of Basil, transforming him into Dorianâs brother means erasing the scandalous and ambiguous relationship between the characters that is often read as being one of the many reasons behind the decay of the portrait, by denoting the repression of nonconforming identities. Basil is written as admiring the beauty of Dorian: he considers him his own personal muse, the driving force behind his art, one that cannot be beaten and that pushes him to be a greater artist. He is as enamoured with Dorian as the Pre-Raphaelites were with women.
In the uncensored version of Dorian Gray, made publicly available in 2011, Basil says quite explicitly to Dorian Gray:
"It is quite true I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man should ever give to a friend. Somehow I have never loved a woman.â (The Guardian)
In the version commonly read by the general public, Basil also tells Lord Henry (about Dorian Gray):
âI find a strange pleasure in saying things to him that I know I shall be sorry for having said.â (Chapter 1)
This simple sentence reveals an unusual relationship constituted of deviant expressions of sentiments between Victorian men.
In the Basil/Dorian relationship, the latter is feminised through his position as Basilâs muse, he becomes an object of desire and obsession, then an enactor of violence through his ever-lasting youth and beauty, making him a relative of the femme fatale type.
Erasing the grey area between the two characters diminishes the complexity of Wildeâs work as a public critique of Victorian gender roles and morality, especially in light of his own trial and prison sentence for which the homoerotic subtext has been used as proof. This raises the issue of straightwashing and how easy it is to erase queerness in the entertainment industry to accommodate to an heteronormative vision.

have anybody listened to the Floweytale by man on the internet? would make a really good adamsapple story. i might go back and add more, but thought it was interesting.
just something fun i noticed and thought i'd write something...
p.s this is the abusive relationship between eve and Adam. The one-sided romantic relationship between lucifer and Adam (Adam lost his soul so it is one-sided) Adam goes back to eve because he doesnât know what else to doâŠbefore he comes to truly understand how unhealthy their relationship is.
Adam's Apple: The Tale of Eve's Descent
Nobody knew the depths of Eve's deranged, twisted mind. No one could fathom the darkness lurking beneath her flawless exterior. Eve, the epitome of innocence in Eden, concealed her true nature with a sweet smile and a glint in her caramel eyes, manipulating everyone, even deceiving Lucifer and Lilith.
Except Adam. Adam knew all too well the monstrous reality of what she was, of the sadistic pleasures she indulged in. Yet, he bore a measure of guilt, for she was born of him, crafted from his rib...
Eve committed unspeakable acts beneath Heavenâs notice. Her malevolence was mirrored in Adam's punishment, for Heaven believed him to be the perpetrator. She stood by, a smile playing on her lips, as he suffered for her sins.
After becoming a Fallen Angel in Hell, Adam wandered soullessly until Lucifer found him, a broken man. Lucifer, already estranged from Lilith, took Adam under his wing. Lucifer fell in love with Adam and the two shared many nights together. Despite Luciferâs efforts to heal him, Adam remained numb, devoid of feeling.
Desperate for solace, Adam fled to Lilith, but her attempts to help him also failed. In a fit of despair, he cursed the heavens and took his own life.
Each time Adam died, he awoke back in Eden, the cycle beginning anew. He experimented with death, killing himself repeatedly, only to return unscathed. This tormenting cycle left him without a soul, unable to feel.
Initially, Adam sought redemption, following Heaven's path and giving everyone happy endings. However, ennui set in, and he began to wonder if the world would change if someone important died. He embarked on a macabre journey, killing everyone he knewâLilith, Lucifer, Eve, Charlie, Emilyâresetting the world each time to observe the changes.
The predictability of their responses bored him. Adam became a puppet master in a world of marionettes, able to foresee every action and word. Disenchanted, he reset the world once more, choosing to merely follow the flow.
In his twisted curiosity, Adam managed to bring Eve back. But this time, she was more malevolent than ever. When Adam died, he went to Heaven before falling to Hell. Eveâs soul, deemed too corrupted, had been sealed away by God. Yet, Adam released her, unleashing an even greater evil.
Eve, now truly the embodiment of ruin, sought to annihilate Heaven and Hell alike. Adam, at first intrigued, soon realized the peril she posed. She intended to use his power to achieve her apocalyptic vision.
Here, Adam's haunting recollection of his journey unfolds:
----
âI remember the first time I woke and saw the light
Armless, legless, I laid there
Oh, Eve, I was terrified
Then I learned I was reborn
As the another Sinner in this form
I called out, I screamed, I prayed
And yet nobody came
Then the king found me crying
So I explained everything
He held me tight Said, 'It's alright'
But I felt nothing during our first night together
Even with Lucifer
Can't feel anything
Please believe I was trying
But I stayed determined!
Ran away to the queen's place
She failed too
Always the same
No use there
I cried, I tried to care
Felt like I couldn't live anywhere
A world without love
A world without happiness
It is supposed to be easier away from you
I followed your path
Succeeded too
With no soul
What comes when you die?
Something primal burned inside
Screamed at the heavens 'This is not how it ends!'
Then I woke up like from a dream In the garden again
I could experiment
So over and over I died
But with determination I came back alive
Friends I made
Happy ends I gave
But I'd always predict
What they'd do, what they'd say
I believe In curiosity 'What'll happen if they die?' '
Well, let's see!'
It liberates to be this way
To kill just to see
How the world can change
Nowadays it's all the same
I've read, I've burned, killed, saved, redeemed
I have seen it all I have played every game
People spouting the same lines 'with your claws still in my mindâ
Eve, I can't predict you
You surprise me every time
I saw you almost did forget
You'd stay determined yet
You came back from death, like me
Only one question remains
Why'd you come back to play?
Were you buried in the ruins?
Did you hear me call your name?
Guess it doesn't matter how
The tale will end now I'm tired of everything
Tired of being a Angel, A fallen Sinner
Tired of being a Human
Only one thing that's left, Eve
Let's finish what we started
Show them it's kill or be killed
Leave them all broken and scarred!
I had plans, I had designs
Seeing you changed my mind
Eve, with you by my side
Life seems ten times worse!
Killer from the world of man
Only you understand
We're pitiless killers, both
So just follow my plan!
H-hey... what is this feeling?!
Why can't I stop shaking?!
E-Eve. Be honest here! We don't have hard feelings!
Hey! Back off!
I changed my mind! This isn't a good idea!
Go back! This place is fine! Hell is just fine!
Iâm happy! I am able to someday love again!
Stop making that face!
This isn't fun!
You're sick in the head!
That's enough!
You've won!
You still think there's more to do
Your killing is never through!
Are you still human inside?!
What kind of monster are you?!
Long past time to end this game
Now nothing feels the same!
Eve, did you do all this when you heard me call your name?
Eve was abusive to Adam
Lucifer loved Adam
Lilith cared for Adam
Adam had lost his soul when he became a Sinner
Both Lucifer and Lilith tried to help him but Adam became frustrated that he still couldnât feel anything. Especially when Lucifer is showing love and affection towards him.
Adamâs death reset the world and he just kept killing himself to reset the world
Nothing changed until he accidentally called Eves name when he wondered if his life would have been easier if Eve was still abusing him. This is able to wake Eve up.
They return to their abusive relationship. Adam believe this is what he wants but it is not.
Adam realises hurting just him isnât enough for Eve and she wants to destroy the world.
Should he tell Lucifer the truth? Both Lucifer and Lilith are aware of his missing soul but not about the reset.

Angel Members Lore Dump
Maya was born in Georgetown, Guyana. While she wasn't necessarily rich, she was well off and grew up comfortably. Marlon and Tamera Harrison, her parents, were both educators; a piano teacher and university professor respectively.
Maya Harrison
She loved music from a young age. Maya began teaching herself how to play various instruments, starting with the piano, and to sing. Then she began writing and composing her own music. The next instruments she taught herself to play were the guitar, violin, and flute. She joined her school's orchestra while continuing to be a pianist. By the time she reached high school, she was considered a prodigy.
Inspired by Donna Knightley to pursue music as a career, Maya started as a backup vocalist for various singers. She also did competitive piano and posted videos of herself singing covers of her favorite songs on the Internet.
Stellaluna Ricci
Stellaluna was born in Florence, Italy to wealthy parents Kwame and Eniola Ricci, a former footballer (soccer player) turned entrepreneur and music producer. Her father is of mixed Italian and Ghanaian descent while her mother is Nigerian. Her and her sister Sole were raised to be debutants.
As such, Stellaluna grew up to have a number of skills including ballet, equestrianism, and most importantly: singing. The last one was her most favorite. Her original dream was to be an opera singer. She started singing with her church's choir before moving on to local singing competitions. Stellaluna also sang for commercials and advertisements.
She began writing her own songs, hoping to perform them one day.
Audrey Laurens-MacDonald
Audrey was born in Queen's. Gillian worked as a plumber and her mom Ke'Ana worked at a deli.
Before she became a singer, Audrey wanted to be a rapper. She started rapping at 12 and performed at school talent shows, amateur nights at local music venues, and other places. She based her style off of characteristics of drill and battle rap as well as elements of hip hop.
In high school, her and few friends formed a music group called FFF (Fierce, Fabulous, Famous) under the name OG Audrey. However, she needed to learn how to sing since it was going to be a pop group. She got singing lessons from her school's music teacher. Audrey left FFF shortly before becoming a member of Angel.
Kamala was born in Bombay, India as the middle child of four girls. Her father Darshan was a chef and her mother Ishani was currently working as an accountant.
Kamala Singh
She kept her love of music hidden because she thought her parents wouldn't approve. She was mostly fascinated by electronic and synth. Part of her free time was spent watching videos on how to play the keyboard. Kamala used some money she got from relatives to secretly buy a keyboard (which is the one she still uses to this day) to practice.
Kamala's musical talents were eventually discovered when she played at one of her cousin's weddings. Everyone was shocked but enjoyed her performance. She confessed to her parents that she wanted to be a musician and that she hid this from them because she thought they wouldn't approve. Her mom said it was fine as long as she got to be in charge of her finances.
Shauna Black Crow
Shauna was born in McAllen, Texas to singers John Black Crow and Maria Sofia Black Crow.
She was a member of the Black Crow Family Band, consisting of her, her siblings, parents, and a few aunts and uncles on her father's side. Essentially she was a child star before she was a child star. Shauna played the guitar with her older sister Dove and brother Eddie. She stayed with the band for a long time until she joined Angel. In high school, she joined her school's mariachi band to expand her musical range.
Being a big star based on her own merits and talents was always her dream. She grew frustrated with her and her siblings being known as just John or Maria Sofia Black Crow's children and vowed to become a big star.
Tsubaki Chisaka
Tsubaki was born in Kumamoto, Japan. Their parents, Hachiro and Toyoko, were members of the Catholic church. Hachiro worked in finance (red flag) while Toyoko was a stay at home mother.
Unlike the others, Tsubaki didn't consider music as their career choice. In fact, it started out as just a hobby to them. They sang in the choir for a bit before Toyoko pulled them out. They didn't really like the music they had to listen to, especially in the years leading up to their parents' divorce and their own pessimistic feelings towards the church. But because worldly music was banned in their home and they weren't allowed to have their phone outside of school or errands (another red flag), they didn't have any access to other types of music.
Tsubaki discovered grunge music through an American cousin (who was also in a band stay with me here I'm slowly building the celebrity world) who also taught them how to play the bass guitar. They were taken to their first garage concert after Toyoko and Hachiro sent them to stay with an aunt for the summer. Another thing they were exposed to was queer culture.

prompt from @adriftwords: Instinctively ordering their takeout order. (full list here)
December 31, 11:50pm 1999 - New York City
Aziraphale knocks firmly but still rather meekly on the drab little door of Crowley's flat. New York City is an entirely different creature to London and he feels so out of sorts. Still. This is where Crowley is planning terrible things for the humans again, and so this is where Aziraphale must be.
Crowley opens the door and seems unsurprised to see Aziraphale, shades reflecting the yellow hallway light. There's a white phone shouldered against his ear. Who on Earth is he speaking to? He absently twirls some of the cord around his finger.
"Ah, yes, hi," he says this with a grin at Aziraphale. "Can I have three slices of spicy chicken cheese and also two cheese light marinara sauce. Please don't get those confused or you'll have a devil of a time later." He winks.
Aziraphale rolls his eyes as Crowley disappears into the flat, and he barges through the threshold in pursuit. "Are you quite done?"
"What? Everyone's always talking about the pizza here, figured we might as well try it. Plus it was the only thing open this late, what with everyone being afraid of the end of the world and all. You know, for someone who can't stand hellfire, you enjoy some very spicy food."
"You can't cause Armageddon yet, this Y2K thingâ"
Crowley laughs. "Oh, that? Yeah, bit of fun, isn't it? Was an accident, actually. I was speaking to some kid on the internet through some chat group and asked wouldn't it be scary if all this new technology went away in the year 2000 because we didn't account for it. I didn't think it was an actual thing." The demon shrugs.
There's a television on in the center of the room. The ball in Times Square is about to begin its descent. Crowley gestures to a disgustingly old blue couch with holes and stains. "Well? Let's see if that ineffable plan factored in the new millennium."
With an indignant hmph, Aziraphale sits. The two watch the countdown nervously. Crowley isn't so amused anymore as the final seconds tick, tick, tick. Five, four, three, two...
There's a knock at the door. Both angel and demon give a yelp.
"Pizza," a bored voice yells.
"That was fast," Crowley mutters, standing.
The power is still on, the music on the television continues, the announcers seem equally relieved. Aziraphale gives a little laugh. "Well, I suppose trying a slice or two won't hurt."

Keke Palmer Is the Internetâs Sweetheart
But the multi-hyphenate is more than just the Queen of Meme.
Photo: Micaiah Carter
Keke Palmer grips the false lashes on her eyelids with two fingers and slowly peels them off her skin. Sheâs had a long day, and itâs nearly 7 p.m.
The sun in the window behind her is blaring over a palm tree without any sign of eventually making its descent somewhere behind the horizon. And yet, Palmer has endured multiple flight delays from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, had a glamorous hours-long photo shoot, found herself at the center of Twitter discourse about her relationship, and still made it home in time to feed her new baby his early-dinner bottle. âYup, heâs asleep,â she says, looking over playfully at her 4-month-old son, Leo.
About that discourse: Palmerâs motherhood recently became an uninvited topic of conversation online. Last Wednesday, while she was photographed and interviewed for this cover, a video circulated of Palmer, clad in a sheer black dress with a bodysuit underneath, getting serenaded by Usher at one of his Las Vegas residency concerts. Darius Daulton Jackson, the father of her child, saw the video and tweeted his criticisms of Palmer for her outfit choice, later doubling down on his stance when her fans swarmed his replies. While on set and by the time we spoke, Palmer hadnât yet engaged, but internet bystanders rallied around her, forming a sort of virtual shield attempting to protect her and, in turn, shunning him.

Even though the 29-year-old actor and producer finds herself in an entirely different life stage from me, itâs impossible to shake the feeling that we grew up together or that we have some sort of shared history. Not in a traditional sense, of course, considering sheâs been a movie star since the tender age of 10, but by way of having a front-row seat to her organic matriculation through life, from project to project. She starred as a strong-willed spelling-bee champ in Akeelah and the Bee, a double-Dutch savant on the Disney Channel movie Jump In!, and a teen fashion executive on True Jackson, VP, and many of us who were once precocious little girls watched a young Palmer on the screen with awe as she evolved into the powerhouse we know her as today. By the time she was getting Oscar buzz for roles in more grown-up fare, like Lorene Scafariaâs Hustlers (based on a true story originally reported in this magazine) and Jordan Peeleâs Nope (a New York Times criticâs pick that won her widespread acclaim and an invitation to the Academy this summer), we became acquainted with Palmer in her role as a serious, well-adjusted, fully fledged actor. And, of course, along the way was her music career, which sheâs still working on, anchored by her song âBottoms Up,â a pivotal moment in the Zeitgeist for teenage girls everywhere. (She released a sequel of sorts to the track last year.)
In the same way weâve come to know her, she feels as though sheâs come to know us: âI do feel like Americaâs little sister, little cousin. I feel very much so related to everybody,â she tells me. âIâm like that second cousin that you see every two years at the family reunion.â
Now, as she branches off into newer, more experimental ventures with KeyTV, an avenue for Palmer to support other young creatives of color, and her podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, on which she has interviewed guests like Vice-President Kamala Harris (Palmer asked her to clarify both if she does have a silk press and what policies should be developed to deal with the maternal mortality crisis), John Stamos, and fellow child stars Aly and AJ Michalka, Palmer is entering her âbig boss era,â as sheâs dubbed it.
Online, Palmer is generally unafraid to discuss potentially taboo topics, like acne and breast milk, while also finding ways to inject humor into whatever sheâs speaking about. From âSorry to this manâ to âYou know itâs your girlllll,â she has kept the culture quenched with a steady stream of delightful sound bites, which inevitably become endearing memes. Admittedly, as a self-described citizen of the internet, she loves this too: âWhen people see themselves in me enough to repost a meme or use a GIF, it really humanizes me in a way that I think sometimes feels lost in my life,â she says. âSo I really do feel appreciative of being a meme.â

There are a lot of moms hyping you up online right now, defending your integrity. Whatâs something you would say to them?
Do you, new moms. Do you. Girl, if thereâs one person on this earth that loves you for sure, itâs that baby. Be happy, because thereâs no love like it. Somebody loving you like that, hell, who cares?
You just had a baby, you host a podcast, and you also started a production company called KeyTV. Tell me what thatâs about.
I came from a very traditional space in entertainment, and it was very hard for me to create my own narrative and help get the work that I ended up getting as Iâve continued to evolve as a creator. Because of the internet, I was able to produce and create my own content and make a financial career that invests back into itself. It helps to keep the creativity going, especially when you think about brands and sponsorships. Not a lot of Black creatives get those same opportunities. KeyTV is an opportunity; itâs a way to bridge the gap and feed more eyes back to the work of BIPOC creators, and using my brand as a launchpad. It is inspired a lot by AwesomenessTV.
Letâs talk about Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, your podcast. What made you want to flip the table and start a podcast? Why did you want to be on the other side of an interview?Â
I started hosting stuff when I was about 17 or 18. It came from me being a curious person. This was when Twitter started really kind of becoming a thing and you only had so many characters. I wanted a forum where we could discuss the things weâre talking about online with one another. That made me want to have my own talk show that I did shortly on BET for a season. From that moment on, I was always looking for an opportunity. I wanted to bridge the gap between millennial and Gen-Z audiences. Thatâs always fun for me.
What excites you about talking to somebody youâve never met before?
That everything is going to be a surprise! I genuinely am so jazzed about life at all times. On regular daytime talk television, you have only a few minutes to really talk about a few things. On a podcast, you can go from talking about aliens to talking about all types of weird stuff. Just from the simple fact that a podcast has no limit.
Which guest has surprised you the most?
When we think about the Black Eyed Peas, we think inspired, fun, wholesome but cool, worldly music that makes people feel good. When I was interviewing Will.i.am., it was just so incredible because thatâs in every aspect of what he does, whether itâs in technology or music, because he wants to transfer his mentality.
Who is your dream podcast guest?
I absolutely would love to talk to Taylor Swift. And Nicki Minaj. Both for similar reasons. I would totally do it at the same time because it would be a big boss conversation, Ms. Lady. I think theyâre both Sagittariuses and Iâm a Sag moon. Theyâre not afraid to talk about the business, the music industry, and the things that people donât understand. Nicki Minaj has spoken to the things that sheâs trying to overcome and how theyâre able to get in certain rooms or awards or conversations, etc. Sheâs very much so wanting to gun for some old ways of things being done.
And itâs the same thing with Taylor Swift when it was coming to owning her masters and just ⊠Iâve also talked a lot about my experience in the music industry, but I just think itâs really cool when you can sit down with your peers and you can discuss the real deal that goes on behind the scenes with the industry.
To hear from us three women would be great. Obviously, I can name a whole list of people that have done similar things. We could talk about Master P., we could talk about Tyler Perry, we could talk about BeyoncĂ©, the list goes on. But those are just two that most recently had spoken about these things. We could have a really good deep conversation and unpacking lyrics because Nicki writes down, and so does Ms. Swift. Itâs giving astral projection, itâs giving lucid dreaming.
So when youâre being interviewed now, do you, ahem, judge the interviewerâs questions from a different lens?
I donât want to say judge, but I definitely try to figure out where we can go. Iâm always willing to go somewhere. When Iâm talking to people, Iâm obviously giving them the respect of knowing whatever their boundaries are. But when theyâre answering, Iâm thinking, Well, where else would they want this to lead to?Another thing Iâve learned is that pre-conversations are really awesome because you can talk to that person about where their headspace is, what kind of things are most important to them right now.
Well, then let me backtrack a little bit, because we didnât get to have much of a pre-conversation. Whatâs your mental headspace and whatâs important to you today?
After having my baby, Iâve just gotten so much more powerful. Iâm just so strengthened in a crazy way. Strutting my stuff, enjoying. Iâll be honest, I think before I even had the baby, I was really actually quite self-conscious. In a way that you would expect, considering the kind of work that I do as a public figure. Always trying to be on point with my body and always trying to make sure Iâm taking care of this and that. Thereâs a lot of physical attention. Being slim and being fit in a particular way was always something that I was gunning for. After having the baby, my body got so much bigger and I started getting fluff in areas I never had before.

Obviously I donât know you like that, but when I see you from the outside, you have always seemed like a woman and a girl whoâs always stood in her own power. Sometimes women are expected to shrink, and I feel like when I see you, I donât see a woman who shrinks.
I think itâs important to say that both things can be true, which Iâm sure you know. Iâm ready to talk to you, you are also very confident, but both things can be true. I speak to my insecurities and it actually makes me feel more confident. Because Iâm not trying to hide. When I really talked about my skin issues and stuff like that, it was really for me.
As I confront my issues head-on and Iâm like, âWell, I feel terrible about this,â or, âThis ainât work for me,â I turn it into a joke, but I donât ignore it. I try not to hide it. Confident people, itâs not that theyâre not insecure, itâs that they just accept the fact that theyâre going to have some insecurities, work on them when they can, and love themselves. Because at the end of the day, what else are you going to do? Hate yourself for who youâre not?
This is a weird question, but what would you say your brain looks like, sounds like, and smells like?
Not Jeffrey Dahmer, girl! The inside of my brain smells like vanilla or something warm and cuddly. It smells like something safe. Itâs like, Hey, we are here for you. What does it look like? Colorful, shit is like synapses are going, you know what I mean? There are some gray spots. There are definitely some gray spots, but most of all, itâs neons, sparkling, itâs electric. Almost like when you have a PC gaming computer and all the colors that are going on in there. Thatâs how my brain is. What does it sound like? Shit, Jordin Sparks, âOne step at a time, thereâs no need to rush.â Iâm always in some type of coming-of-age comedy.
I want to walk inside your brain, that sounds nice. On the flip side, youâve got a lot going on in your life. Youâre acting, youâre singing, you have a podcast, youâre a new mom, youâre keeping the culture consistently quenched with delightful sound bites and memes. How do you stay grounded and at peace?
My family, my friends, my loved ones. Keke Palmerâs who I am, but itâs almost like Spider-Man. Iâm Peter Parker at the end of the day, and at some point, I have to take the suit off. Itâs still me, Iâm still there. Itâs still Keke and thereâs no LaurenShe was born Lauren Keyana Palmer. without Keke. Thereâs no Keke without Lauren. But itâs just one aspect of who I am. We all have cultural aspects of ourselves that we sometimes bring out more or less than others.
When it comes to being able to get balance in my life, itâs taking off that suit, taking off the Keke Palmer side of myself and putting her to rest. Giving her an opportunity to recharge and relax and also know that the other side of me that maybe isnât that jazzed up all the time, has a place, is needed, is valued, and able to just breathe. Itâs really awesome.
Do you ever wish that you could just be Lauren or Keke part two, Keke without the visibility?
Sure, sure. Yeah, absolutely. Sometimes I feel like I would love a little bit of more anonymity, or at least a version that wasnât so chaotic. We live in a particular generation where the fame thing is a little bit too much. The way that celebrities are idolized. Popularity to some degree is fine. Itâs normal. It could be expected, especially if youâre a public servant or someone thatâs a public figure. But now itâs the desire and the goal as opposed to being the aftereffect of being good at something or being known for something. Itâs just being known to be known.
Fame used to be a little bit more mayorlike, and now itâs almost gone to some type of godlike vibe. That can be quite dangerous and a lot of pressure. I donât think any human should be that adored. Iâm happy when people say that Iâm their role model or I inspire them or whatever. I think the basis of anything Iâm trying to do is to lead you to you, toward you. You can rock with me. You can buy into my stuff, you can support me. Obviously, thatâs my career. But never do I ever want somebody to think they need to be like me. If they want to be like me in any regard, hopefully itâs to be authentically themselves. Hopefully that is the biggest message that theyâre receiving.
When you said mayorlike, I pictured you in a little top hat.
Walking around, Mayor Keke, âHello there. You know itâs your girl.â
Speaking of âYou know itâs your girl,â which was a viral clip taken from your Met Gala red carpet interview with Megan Thee Stallion, how does it feel to consistently become a meme?
I felt like that was a hit movie. âSorry to this man,â I could not have predicted the âsorry to this manâ reaction. Itâs crazy, but cool and dope at the same time. Itâs randomized how that happens. But itâs a very humbling thing because sometimes as an entertainer, people do not have a safe space for you to be relatable. You probably live a drastically different life than them. But at the end of the day, outside of whatever our daily life activities could be, Iâm still going to work. Iâm still trying my best, Iâm still trying to make it in this workaholic country weâre in, we both got 24 hours and we both just trying to get it done.
And so we all are the same. When people see themselves in me enough to repost a meme or use a GIF, it humanizes me in a way that I think sometimes feels lost in my life. I really do feel appreciative of being a meme. Because what theyâre saying is, Sheâs like me, or they relate to it. It doesnât get any better than that.
You donât try to go viral? It just comes naturally, basically?

What keeps you authentic when you are in the public eye? Especially when it could be so much easier, and so many others have gone the route of, Hereâs my public persona and Iâm going to do everything and be perfect. What is your motivation to be you?
There is such a thing as privacy. Iâm not showing yâall my ass at night. Iâm a human being. I have things that make me just a normal person. Iâm flawed. I definitely try to put my best foot forward. But again, because I donât like the idealism and I donât like the kind of era that we are in with fame, I definitely self-deprecate, point to my flaws, constantly say Iâm not perfect because I really donât want people putting me to this unbelievable standard. I donât live to be a celebrity. I live to do what I love, to share love, to give something positive to the world. Being under a magnifying glass for all of my life, it was kind of a surrender to realizing no matter what I do, itâs never going to be enough, so thatâs okay. Let me at least be me.
Are you really online? Do you consume social media? And if so, what does a late-night scrolling sesh look like for you? For me, Iâm doing YouTube deep dives of a couple that cosplays like they live in the 1800s.Â
Iâm always looking at weird stuff too. Iâm looking at TikTok. I can get crossed in a conspiracy theory. I can be looking at some new articles online and just all types of random stuff. Iâm definitely 100 percent like an internet person. I guess thatâs a personality trait. A lot of my friends that Iâve met, even as kids, were online. Through chat or MySpace. Iâll see somebodyâs page online or Iâll check somebodyâs life out and Iâm like, I want that person to be my friend. I feel like online literally gives us the opportunity to see in other peopleâs worlds, to reach things that we otherwise didnât get to reach. I really do use it as a tool and I really respect it. Especially growing up, being in the entertainment industry, being homeschooled, not having a real school, I really was appreciative of online.
Now that you made me think of it, somebody else that I would love to talk to would be Tom from MySpace. What he created really helped my life because I didnât have any other way to be friends. I might be a celebrity, but in my mind, in my world, I felt like an outcast. I turned to the internet where I could create space for me, and build my world and have friends and feel like I was normal. It all feels very full circle, me being a meme queen. The internet is a place that Iâve always loved and adored and felt like I could be myself, and in a way, that is a space that was not always given to me in real life. Thatâs why we all played The Sims too.
Do you think the human race is better or worse off with social media?
I think itâs better, but not when you donât use it right. When I was talking to Will.i.am about it, he was definitely like, âYo, I would much rather be in a world where thereâs AI and all this kind of stuff than in a world that itâs not.â With the internet, the problem is that itâs extremely powerful and it can be used in bad ways and people have used it in bad ways, and thatâs what scares us. But when we use it in good ways, man, weâre able to really do some incredible things.
You recently interviewed Vice-President Kamala Harris and asked her about her silk press. You also used the phrase âpoop on a stickâ in the interview, which knocked me on my knees. What does podcast prep before you start the conversation look like for you?
Itâs different each time. I have support with my producing team. I always script out the top halves of my show. And then the other halves of them are obviously just conversation, but I have bullet points or CliffsNotes of what I want to discuss and talk to whoever Iâm having on with me that may not be the actual interview guest, whether itâs my mom or whether itâs Darius or whether itâs Max. Weâll kind of discuss what our POVs are. That way we all know that we have some unique perspective on the topic. When it comes to the interviewee, as much as I have questions that I want to ask them, I also listen and just try to see where their conversation would take us.
Anyone youâve been nervous to record with?
I was nervous for Kamala.
Who wouldnât be?
For Madam VP, I was definitely nervous because I wanted to give respect to what sheâs trying to do and have a conversation about it while at the same time humanizing the conversation because thereâs a huge disconnect, in my opinion, with our generation in the government. Itâs beyond just getting people to vote. Thereâs a bigger flaw where we donât believe in the system. Itâs how to get people to believe that thereâs a reason to support our public servants and actually believe that theyâre going to be good at their job or theyâre going to be worth us listening to. Itâs about asking important questions, but also, are you a person in there?
We need to see that these people are real. We need to know why they wanted to get into these positions. A lot of this is starting to look like a joke and has been a joke and looks like a reality show and it just seems like a big money grab and it just doesnât seem real. But thereâs no way to work in any system of anything and be perfectly perfect or do something thatâs totally agreeable.
The point is to get to a place where we can at least feel like somebody is human and touchable and real, that they can be reached even if they are working within a system that is clearly flawed and corrupt. We need them to speak to that. I was happy when I was talking to Kamala, Madam VP, excuse me, about this topic. She was saying to me that she knows that people donât believe, and thatâs why sheâs doing it. She knows what sheâs working against. I wanted that interview to be something that we felt was real so we can actually be engaged. Because right now, honey, itâs giving, like, stale news variety show.
I listened to another episode where you talked about being a child star and you said if you werenât an entertainer, you may have gone into politics. Would you ever go into politics now?
I donât know what role I would play.
President?
Well, letâs think about it. What is the presidentâs job, really? Because he canât change no laws for real. I mean, they can, but itâs like they really arenât the ones that are doing that work. If the presidentâs job is to be a figurehead, speak to the issues, encourage the people, represent them and create a positive democracy and good morale, then, yeah, I mean, I could. This is the concept of politics I love because itâs being a public servant. Child, sign me up. I love being a public servant. I love being serviceable.
I know a lot of people donât think about entertainment as that, but, I mean, I am still doing a service. Iâm literally tapping and singing and dancing for you to laugh and enjoy. Iâm trying to serve you, for sure. Thatâs something Iâve already been doing all my life. So in that regard, yes, the part of politics that makes things difficult is feeling like that I believe in what Iâm doing and that I can actually believe that I can get something done. If I was going to ever go into politics, it would be because I really believed that I could fix some shit or figure something out. So I think thatâs what it would really take is for me to feel like I could actually be useful.
Would you consider yourself Americaâs sweetheart?
Girl, that is crazy as hell.
Come on.
If that is what the people think, Iâm truly gagged and gooped because, wow. I donât even know what that entails, truly, what that really means. But, by golly, if you all feel like Iâm Americaâs sweetheart, Iâm fucking here for that shit all day and night. I appreciate it because it feels like a term of endearment. But what do I think? If I were to declare myself, I do feel like Americaâs little sister, little cousin.

Like a lot of people in their late 20s, I feel like I grew up with you, and whatever project you were involved with seemed to mirror whatever life stage I was going through at the time. What was child stardom like for you, and what was it like to have so many eyes on you at such a young age?
Honestly speaking, initially it was traumatic when I really experienced it, like after I did True Jackson, VP. And then I got used to it and I tried to kind of control it a little bit more by setting boundaries for myself and being a little bit more realistic about what I needed from the people that would be around me. Fame is a lot. People think that they want it, but itâs intense. It could be fun and cool in certain times if it can possibly help you get quicker dinner reservations. But a good job will do that. You know, you donât have to be famous. You just have to network.
I donât know why anybody wants it. Itâs a lot to have a lot of attention on you all the time. It gives you a lot of anxiety. Itâs nerve-racking. Youâre looking over your shoulder all the time. Is somebody going to try and humiliate me or use me for clicks or likes or, you know, whatever? Not everybody can handle it. Itâs just a dangerous game.
Time for a few rapid-fire questions. Do you think aliens exist?
Yes.
Would you ever explore the deep sea?
No.
What would your last meal be? You can have multiple courses or just one bite of something and then move on. It can be anything. Multiple things.
A charcuterie board. I always needed a charcuterie board. I need to start off with a charcuterie board and a nice tall glass of wine. Then, Iâd like to take it to a big pizza. From Little Italy in New York. A particular pizza place called Little Italyâs in New York. Thereâs one right across the street from Papaya Dog.Itâs the sauce that they do that makes it what it is. If this is the last meal, I donât need it to be fancy, I just need it to be good. And, lastly, some snickerdoodle cookies. We got to make it feel like home again.
What do you think happens when we die?
I think we go to nothing. And, I mean that so happily, not in a sad way. I feel like, before we come to our human bodies, we already are in a utopia. The reason why itâs a utopia is because itâs like everything and nothing at the same time. Weâre beholden to nothing, we have no attachments, weâre completely and utterly free, and we know in whatever this energy space is that we are all interconnected. So thereâs such a freedom and such a happiness. Itâs not necessarily weâre riding roller coasters and stuff. We donât need those things. The happiness and joy is purely innately within us as a spiritual being.
And then I think we come here and we put this suit on, and the suit is actually what makes life really hard, because what comes with humanity and being a human person, as opposed to being an animal, or a rock, or something like that, is our very heightened consciousness and awareness that is sometimes competitive with our spiritual thing that doesnât actually need words, or language, or actions to just be and understand. And we confuse ourselves when weâre down here.
I think, when we die, we realize, Oh my gosh. It wasnât that deep. I was always going to be okay. Everything was always going to be all right. Because, this world, this experience is everything and nothing at the same time. Itâs so nothingness that it became everything. I think thatâs odd. But, I mean, I grew up Catholic. I believe in Jesus. I believe in all the shits. But at the same time, I also feel like some things are like a mixture of spirituality and metaphysical stuff. I go down on the loops. But I be in church too. Iâm everywhere with it.
If you could live forever, would you? Absolutely not. No, thereâs nothing about that that sounds good. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
That sounds crazy. I want to have a nice, good long life. I donât want to be that grandma thatâs holding on for dear life and her body falling apart. Let me go looking fine and sexy in my sleep naturally. I donât want my body to be just turned inside out and Iâm like, âIâm still here, kids.â No. Unplug me if Iâm falling apart.
What is the most interesting thing in your bag right now?
The truth is, I only carry around one bag. And itâs the mommy bag. And you know what it has in there? My pump, my nipple cream, some contacts, and some prenatal vitamins, post-prenatal lactation supplements.
What is the question that keeps you up at night?
What is this about? I always ask myself, Whatâs the reason? What is the reason for this all?
Thatâs beautiful. Can you spell pulchritude?
Of course I can. P-U-L-C-H-R-I-T-U-D-E. Pulchritude?
What does the future look like? What does it look like five years from now, or even in the next few months?
Iâm going to continue to be killing these fashions, honey. Continue to expand. I canât really say exactly what itâs going to be, because I feel like Iâm even surprised sometimes about where I end up. But definitely more hosting, and acting, and all that stuff. A lot more stuff behind the scenes too. I really do love producing, and I love helping put stuff together and support people. With KeyTV, we made a short film with a kid from L.A. Film School, supported him with a production crew, and collaborated from different perspectives. I was grateful. To be close in age with him was awesome, too. Iâm in a unique vantage point to be able to communicate, and talk, and relate, but also have wisdom that is granted only through the experience that Iâve had.
