the thing about zelda thelegendofzelda is that, due to misogyny and her role as damsel rather than active party in the games, she is almost more a concept than a character in most of the games she appears in. she is a vaguely woman-shaped object, shifting to be any aspirational type of woman the game requires of her - a princess or a goddess, sometimes rarely a queen or a companion. she is a goal that, by definition, cannot be attained by a player. all she can ever give you are a few grateful lines after being rescued before the credits roll. the one definitive deviation from this formula is breath of the wild's incarnation of zelda, and it appears to be a deviation that nintendo quickly decided to roll back in the following game. maybe characterizing her makes her too difficult to project upon, too unlikable. the game's formula dictates that her conceptualness, her lack of strong interiority, are what make her marketable.
