avatar au where growing up everyone remarks on how much spider and quaritch have the same eyes and you know spider's not stupid. he can hear the disgust and the hate in their voices when they say it and it hurts. and yeah, maybe he could go to norm and max but it's not like they can really do anything. they can't change his parentage or his genetics. so spider does what he does best, he adapts.

nobody likes his eyes, right? then he'll just cover them up. and it takes a while til he can find a good enough fabric that he can see through but other people can't but he finds it eventually. and norm and max used to give him comic books to read and based off those, he takes a strip of fabric and wraps it around his eyes.

it's hard at first. he bumps into things constantly and norm takes to worrying over him like a concerned mother but he brushes it off. finally, when he can navigate around the base without bumping into anything, he goes outside.

outside is even harder than inside but he trains himself. he trains himself to hear the way rotting branches sound when stepped on. trains himself to approximate distances. trains himself to hear the animals coming. it takes even longer to learn how to live outside with the blindfold than it did inside hell's gate.

it's better this way, he tells himself, no one has commented on your eyes in months. it's better this way.
