Stepping out of Davey’s embrace feels just like reentering the sewer had- as if the sun has faded from Jack’s skin once again. He can barely see the man in the darkness, just making out the curve of his nose and his hands, and his willowy outline. Jack isn’t sure what to say, what to think. He knows what he should think: Davey is a liability, detrimental to the secretive and important nature of Jack’s work. And as for what to say? Davey wouldn’t like any of it. Wouldn’t take any of it, won’t accept it. The man isn’t one for excuses, and Jack doesn’t like giving them to the other, never has. But apologizing didn’t work this time, and owning up to much of anything will mean exposure.

Jack sighs, jaw setting. “It’s not the government, Dave, I wouldn’t do that.” 

Then what does he do? 

“Then what is it?” Davey says, turning more towards him. Jack can still catch the orangey fire in his eyes in the dim glow of the tunnel, and the echoing of his voice only makes Jack shrink more. “What kind of job has you- your arms covered in cuts, and a sword on your belt.” 

Davey’s face hardens further, and before Jack can stop it, the taller man tugs on Jack’s jacket, and his hands are searching over Jack’s chest. His eyes widen, and he pushes Davey away, stumbling back.

“And a concealed holster,” Davey continues, eyes once again glaring at Jack. “Illegal, and dangerous, and worse than your usual. I should call–”

“Grow up,” Jack scoffs. He can’t help it. “Not everyone can have a cushy job defending whoever you see fit and studying up in a building that costs more than ten thousand a year out your pocket.”

“I did!” Davey snaps. “It’s why I stopped looking for you, stopped- being like you. I grew up, while you’re off running around with guns and swords like you’re playing pirates.” 

Jack burns, heat rising to his cheeks. 

“It ain’t playtime,” he growls out, punctuating his words with a jab to Davey’s chest. 

“Dammit, J, then what is it?” Davey shoots back again.
