[ad_1] Will Manu Bhaker get the Khel Ratna this time. Source: Olympics The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has constantly been making changes for the better so that no athlete or coach feels left out while applying for the national sports awards. In the past, these awards were presented on August 29 every year, the birth date of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. It was due to the efforts of a former top-ranked bureaucrat in the Sports Ministry that a decision was made to change the dates. Why? In years when an Asian Games or Olympics were held, these Games sometimes ended after August 29. It is well known that someone like Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had to first be presented the Arjuna Award, and then the Khel Ratna. And that, after he had won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. On November 14, the online applications for the awards close. In a huge shift, the MYAS has encouraged athletes and coaches to directly apply online. There are clear reasons for this. In the past, there was a practice where national sports federations had to nominate the athletes. This was a bit dicey, since there had been cases of favouritism. In the worst-case scenarios, certain athletes’ names were totally ignored by some federations. Whether an athlete won a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics or Paralympics, he or she has to apply online. The window remains open a few more hours. This is, perhaps the first year that the national federations have not gone public announcing who they have nominated. It is good in many ways, since the federation selecting an athlete was just the first stage. After that, the MYAS and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had to do due diligence, verification and then present the names before an awards committee, which is nowadays mandatorily chaired by a retired judge. Bringing a retired judge on board was a good idea since his or her signature on the list of athletes/coaches declared worthy of being award winners meant that legal hassles could potentially be avoided. There have been any number of instances when an athlete who did not win an award approached a court of law. This was not only in poor taste, but also left a bad impression vis a vis another athlete who had won the award. The 2024 awards nomination process appears to be good. No athlete can feel left out and since it is an online process, everything will be tracked till the last stage. Who gets the Arjuna Awards or the Khel Ratna or the Dronacharya Award is subjective, since the committee decides and a judge has to sign on the sheet containing the names. The last stage will be the Sports minister, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, approving it. This process cannot be completed in a few days, and nothing can be left to chance. In fact, even suggesting the names of those who could win awards is a bit risky, since India won six medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics and 29 in the Paralympics. How does one ignore the Indian cricket team winning the ICC T20 World Cup this June in the West Indies? This was also a big achievement. More than the players, most of whom have got some sports award or the other, Rahul Dravid’s name could come up for a Dronacharya award. Even if he has not applied, his name can still be taken up. The awards committee is empowered to make a mention. This writer was part of one sports awards committee in 2016, which also had PT Usha and Virender Sehwag as members. What stood out at that time was how these legends also did their due diligence. Today, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) may feel Usha is not pro-AFI. At that time, she certainly made a case for two Arjuna Awards to be given from track and field. This was in sharp contrast to Sehwag saying at the meeting that it did not matter if cricketers were overlooked. His view was that cricketers keep getting something or the other. This logic cannot be applied today. Will Manu Bhaker get the Khel Ratna award for her two medals? Has she even applied? Even that is a secret. For now, an online process that gives everyone a chance to stake a claim seems the best way forward.

Virat kholi
Virat Kohli : (born 5 November 1988) is an Indian international cricketer and former captain of the Indian national team who plays as a right-handed batsman for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL and for Delhi in Indian domestic cricket. Widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time,[3] Kohli holds the record for scoring most runs in both T20 internationals and in IPL. In 2020, the International Cricket Council named him as the male cricketer of the decade. Kohli has also contributed to India's successes, including winning the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions trophy.
Born and raised in New Delhi, Kohli trained in West Delhi Cricket Academy; started his youth career with Delhi Under-15 team. Kohli made his international debut in 2008 and quickly became a key player in the ODI team. He made his Test debut in 2011. In 2013, Kohli reached the number one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time. During 2014 T20 World Cup, he set a record for the most runs scored in the tournament. In 2018, he achieved yet another milestone, becoming the world's top-ranked Test batsman, making him the only Indian cricketer to hold the number one spot in all three formats of the game. His form continued in 2019, where he became the first player to score 20,000 international runs in single decade. In 2021, Kohli made the decision to step down as the captain of the Indian national team for T20Is, following the T20 World Cup and in early 2022 he stepped down as the captain of the Test team as well.
Kohli has received many accolades for his performances on the cricket field. He was recognized as the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2012 and has won Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, given to the ICC Cricketer of the Year, on two occasions, in 2017 and 2018. Kohli also won ICC Test Player of the Year and ICC ODI Player of the Year awards in 2018, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same year. Additionally, Kohli was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for three consecutive years, from 2016 to 2018. At the national level, Kohli was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri under the sports category in 2017 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honour, in 2018.
In 2016, he was ranked as one of the world's most famous athletes by ESPN and one of the most valuable athlete brands by Forbes. In 2018, Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2020, he was ranked 66th in Forbes list of the top 100 highest-paid athletes in the world for the year 2020 with estimated earnings of over $26 million. Kohli has been deemed one of the most commercially viable cricketers, with estimated earnings of ₹165 crore (US$21 million) in the year 2022.
Early life
Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Prem Kohli, worked as a criminal lawyer and his mother, Saroj Kohli, served as a housewife. He has an older brother, Vikas, and an older sister, Bhawna. Kohli's formative years were spent in the Uttam Nagar and commenced his early education at Vishal Bharti Public School. According to his family, Kohli exhibited an early affinity for cricket as a mere three-year-old. He would pick up a cricket bat, display natural skill, and request his father to bowl to him.
In 1998, the West Delhi Cricket Academy (WCDA) was created and on 30 May of that year, Prem Kohli, espoused his younger son's fervor for cricket, assisted nine-year-old Kohli's aspirations and arranged for him to meet Rajkumar Sharma, who initially perceived him to be just another enthusiastic and determined young boy. However, two weeks later, Sharma was impressed by Kohli's accuracy and power in throwing. Upon the suggestion of their neighbours, Kohli's father considered enrolling his son in a professional cricket academy, as they believed that his cricketing abilities merited more than just playing in the gully cricket. Despite his abilities, he faced the setback of being unable to secure a place in the under-14 Delhi team, not due to a lack of merit but due to extraneous factors. Prem Kohli received offers to relocate his son to influential clubs, which would have ensured his selection, but he declined the proposals, as he was determined that Kohli should earn his recognition based on his own merit and overcome the system of nepotism and deceit prevalent in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Kohli persisted and eventually found his way into the under-15 Delhi team. He received training at the academy while simultaneously participating in matches at the Sumeet Dogra Academy located at Vasundhara Enclave. As per Sharma's recollection of Kohli's initial days at his academy, he exuded remarkable talent, making it arduous for the coach to curb his enthusiasm. Kohli remained prepared to bat at any position, and often, Sharma had to physically coerce him to leave the training sessions, as he was reluctant to depart. In pursuit of furthering his cricketing career, he transitioned to Saviour Convent School during his ninth-grade education. Kohli's ardent passion for cricket compelled him to travel long distances with his father to ensure that he never missed a match. With time, he diligently honed his skills and diversified his range of shots, commanding respect from the local bowlers.
On the 19th of December 2006, Kohli experienced the loss of his father due to a cerebral attack. During his childhood, his father played a crucial role in supporting his cricket training. Kohli has credited his father as the one who drove him to practice every day. He has expressed his feelings of missing his father's presence at times. Following the demise of Kohli's father, his mother observed a significant change in his personality. Kohli appeared to become more mature overnight, and he began taking every cricket match seriously. He harbored an aversion to exclusion from games and appeared to channel his entire existence into the pursuit of cricket following his father's untimely demise. It was as if Kohli was pursuing not just his own aspirations but also those of his late father. Kohli's family resided in Meera Bagh, Paschim Vihar until the year 2015, after which they relocated to Gurgaon.

Latest ICC rankings out, Virat and Hasaranga move ahead after good Asia Cup 2022 outing
Sep 14, 2022 15:33 IST Dubai , September 14 (Always First): Indian star batter Virat Kohli and pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar have both made significant gains in the most recent ICC Men's Player Rankings as a result of their good performances at the Asia Cup 2022. At the Asia Cup, Kohli amassed an impressive 276 runs, with his first international century in nearly three years, as he rose 14 ranks to land in the 15th slot among all T20I batters. India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar also reaped the benefits of his good performance moving up four spots to seventh. All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has also benefitted from his incredible performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022. After winning, the Player of the Tournament at the Asia Cup, the Sri Lanka match-winning player rose three spots to be placed sixth among bowlers and seven spaces to be fourth among all-rounders. The Sri Lankan all-rounder took nine wickets throughout the competition, including three against Pakistan in the championship match. His performance was a big factor in the island nation's success in winning the sixth Asia Cup. If Hasaranga can maintain his present form at the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, he might aim for first place on both ranking rankings. On the list of T20I bowlers, the 25-year-old is currently just 100 rating points behind Australia's Josh Hazlewood, and the top-to-bottom difference on the all-rounder ranks is even smaller. Following the Asia Cup, Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, surpassed Mohammad Nabi, from Afghanistan, to become the new number one T20I all-rounder. After regaining his form at the Asia Cup, Kohli still has a ways to go before he can challenge for the top spot among T20I batters, but he is at least headed in the right direction. The top T20I batter rankings saw the biggest movement towards the top with the champion right-hander, Lokesh Rahul up seven places to 23rd and Bhanuka Rajapaksa up 34 spots to 34th also making significant gains on the players there. In a close race for first place, Pakistan's seasoned batsman Mohammad Rizwan keeps the top spot in the T20I batter rankings, while South Africa's Aiden Markram surpasses Babar Azam to take second. Haris Rauf (up nine spaces to joint 25th) and Mohammad Nawaz (up seven spots to 34th) of Pakistan were among the top movers on the list of T20I bowlers following impressive showings at the Asia Cup. The latest Test player rankings did not show any movement among the top 10, although players from South Africa and England made significant gains after finishing a recent three-match series. Ollie Pope, a right-handed batter, rose 17 spots to rank 29th overall on the list of batters, while teammate Ollie Robinson, a bowler, rose 11 spots to rank 15th after taking five wickets in the first innings of the third and deciding Test at The Oval, maintains his lead over England's right-hander Ollie Pope. Despite losing the series to Brendon McCullum's team 2-1, the speedster Marco Jansen's performance in the series' last Test will give South Africa optimism. A five-wicket haul of his own helped Jansen climb eight ranks to 26th place among Test bowlers and six spots to tie for 12th place among all-rounders as a result of his efforts. The most notable winners of the recent changes to the ODI player rankings were the veteran combo of Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc, who won the recently concluded Chappell-Hadlee series 3-0. Smith, who scored 167 runs in the series, was rewarded by moving up 13 ranks to the 10th spot overall in the batter rankings. The seasoned left-armer will be happy with his three-place move to ninth overall on the list of ODI bowlers, even though Starc's rise wasn't nearly as spectacular. Trent Boult of New Zealand, who concluded the series against Australia as the series' best wicket-taker with 10 victims, keeps the top spot among ODI bowlers. (Always First) Read the full article
