I've said this before, but I'm increasingly pessimistic that anybody (you, me, or that guy over there) is capable of anything but motivated and self-serving reasoning on any subject they perceive themselves having any stake in whatsoever. Unfortunately, it seems to be in our nature to project our stakes onto just about everything, no matter how remote the circumstances. Minds only change when it's convenient for them to change, and persuasion is mostly the art of finding enough people who are already on your side but don't know it yet.
