I'm honestly always thinking about how Gregory the Great was in so much pain from his chronic issues that he couldn't leave his bed, and he wrote 35 volumes about Job, who is the biblical poster child of suffering while keeping the faith.
Gregory thought the world was ending. The Lombards were attacking, the empire had long since abandoned the city of Rome, there was famine, and several plague outbreaks. The barbarians were heretics or schismatic, and all he could do was write letters across the continent asking for someone to care about order and God. He was trying to prioritize charity, along with hierarchy. He wrote a lot about miracles and saints, the ideal bishop, and so on.
But he also wrote about suffering having meaning while bedridden at the end of the world. He dedicated it to his special friend, Leander of Seville, who also was suffering chronic pain. The letters that Gregory sent to him were extremely sweet.
Anyway, as a person who also has chronic pain, this was a very unique topic to learn about.

I want an au where Hannibal is his usual hedonistic self, and Will is a priest. They meet at a funeral, Hannibal is captivated, and he starts going to his services. He sees the darkness in the young man and wants to corrupt him further. Will may or may not have his own secrets.

With the 17th day of March approaching, please consider:
St Gertrude of Nivelles
Tumblr media
Patron of Cats, the Recently Diseased, Gardeners, Travelers, Those with Mental Illness, and Those with a Morbid Fear of Mice and Rats.
Ok but why is she the patron saint of cats?
No, it's not because she really liked cats.
It's because she was good at doing cat things, like keeping mice and rats away. And spacing out - they say she spent most of her time in contemplation and such, to the point where she died from not doing pretty much anything else. Who among us hasn't had that happen.

Also she was in with god to get people released from purgatory. Mighty decent of her.

I'm sick so I missed church this morning and was on Tumblr instead — I'm not usually on Tumblr Sunday mornings. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Catholics I follow rebloging a Catholic sermon, and it was encouraging

Everyone waits.
The chatter and banter which once occupied the courtyard dies down to dull whispers and foot tapping.
Everyone waits, and there's no Crowley.
"Wonderful," Jamil sighs. "He's probably taken all the money and run off. I told you all that-"
"Maybe he's late!" Kalim shouts. A few in the crowd murmur in hopeful agreement.
Silver coughs. "Maybe he realized this whole thing is ridiculous and is processing everyone's refunds,"
They don't like that option as much.
The sun hangs lower and lower in the sky, threatening to shroud everyone in darkness as the minutes tick on.
"Well, I've had enough of this," Vil says, turning towards the exit. "I've put off my afternoon long enough."
"For once, we can agree on something," Leona murmurs, dragging Ruggie along with him.
No one is exactly surprised with this turn of events- but there's a definite sense of disappointment that everyone is sharing.
"He probably just forgot or 'somethin," Epel says, walking alongside Ace, Deuce, and Jack back to Ramshackle to update you on the happenings.
Jack shrugs. "He's definitely not the most organized, but there's no way someone could just "forget" about this. I think Jamil is right, he probably ran off with the money while he could. The swindler..."
Deuce is the next to add something to the pity party. "And yet, we should've known this was a possibility,"
"Shoulda seen it coming..." Epel murmurs. "I shoulda listened to Vil and pulled out while I still had the chance. Dang it..."
The lights are on in Ramshackle as the four approach, a warm and welcome sight after their disappointing afternoon. And the front door is open- were you expecting them?
"Hm. Well, think of it this way," Ace pushes the door the rest of the way open. "We may have been scammed, but at least nothing changes. I mean, it could've been worse."
"A lot worse," Deuce murmurs, following him inside.
The four make it into the foyer and stop dead in their tracks.
There are many things to expect walking into Ramshackle- cobwebs, dust, ghosts, you- Crowley is usually not one of them.
"You- you've been here this whole time?!" Epel shouts, throwing his arms out. "We were all 'waitin for 'ya like a bunch of idjits!"
Deuce and Ace wince. "Dude, chill... but seriously, where were you?"
Crowley doesn't have the chance to answer before something else steals away their attention.
You walk into the room, suitcase in hand. "Guys?"
The four turn to greet you, eyes wide at the luggage you're carrying. "What's that... Crowley?"
The man himself just stands there, pretending to ponder something. "I could have sworn I sent someone to break the news... how peculiar,"
Epel's brow knots. "What news?"
"A third party somehow got wind of our little... venture and donated a very high sum at the last minute. Along with a very passionately worded letter about our dear prefect's safety here at school," he pauses. "Or lack thereof."
Crowley sighs. "The name rung a bell, but... I couldn't imagine how or why anyone outside of NRC would be following the prefect's moves so closely,"
Deuce's eyes narrow. "Crowley. What are you trying to say?"
"Well, I..." he says, seemingly at a loss for words. "I'm afraid to say that our prefect is being transferred to Noble Bell College,"

There's this way of doing female-ness in Christianity that I call "pastel flower journal Christianity." I've got nothing against pastel flower journals per se, but for some reason people believe it's the end all and be all of female spirituality, and I think it's a real disservice towards young Christian women.
One of these days I'd like to start a prayer-and-reading group or something for young women, but there would be no floral themes or over-focus on how "God thinks you're beautiful even if the world doesn't" (a true statement, but it's wayyyyy too often the focus in women's spiritual reading). Instead we would be reading:
Seneca's Letters from a Stoic
Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning
Sheed's A Map of Life
Portions of Pieper's book on leisure
Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life
Guardini's The Lord (or something similar)
Therese's Story of a Soul
and some select portions of the Nicomachean Ethics.
(Also they're all getting the porn talk. I don't know why we give the porn talk to young men but not young women. There's this idea that women don't use porn and they only need the talk about "guarding their heart." Bullshit. There's porn on the YA shelves of Barnes and Nobles and before that there were bodice rippers. Young women need the porn talk too.)
Every young woman needs to be getting a basic grounding in virtue ethics, logic, natural law, scholastic philosophy and Biblical hermeneutics if they're going to get by in today's spiritual landscape. Enough faffery and emotionalism in young women's spiritual education! Give them real food to chew on, not pasty sentimentalism!

Okay I really want to hear your thoughts because I always thought the Naked Youth was John Mark Patron Saint of Cowards for no real reason other than 1) its only found in his gospel and 2) he's the patron saint of cowards lol
i get the appeal of judas x jesus, definitely but you guys are sleeping on john the apostle x jesus. like john? john the beloved? john, the disciple whom jesus loved? now there was leaning on jesus' bosom one of disciples whom jesus loved? the only one specifically mentioned to be present during his crucifixion? the apostle of love?
idk there is something so intimate about how throughout the gospel of john, this 'disciple whom jesus loved' keeps getting mentioned like "then peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom jesus loved following" or during jesus' crucifixion where "when jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved", but it's never explicitly mentioned that it's john. this phrase keeps getting mentioned again and again, in the end of the gospel of john, it's implied the beloved is like "it is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true." the writer of the gospel of john, so the guy that's identifying himself as the beloved disciple is john the evangelist, who is believed to be john the apostle (not confirmed but most popular belief). like think of this, john is not even named in the gospel, he refers to himself anonymously as the disciple whom jesus loved. little hints all over like the closing sentiment with the testimony and stuff. AAA like damn.
also. scholars keep arguing over whether jesus and john the beloved's relationship could be seen as homoerotic. legitimate thing, christopher marlowe was on trial for blasphemy for claiming that "st john the evangelist was bedfellow to christ and leaned always on his bosom" like come on. think about them.

Of course Nicky will never clock Kevin as bisexual. Of course he never clocked andreil as queer. Of course he can't ever see the members of his own community.
As far as we know, Nicky's first time actually being in a big, queer community was the camp. I feel like people overlook this. He was raised baptist, and no matter how gay you turn and how much sinful sex you have, you're always going to be just a product of your environment. The hymns are embedded in your vocal cords. The wine flows through your veins. It's all he's ever known until it suddenly isn't.
I'm pretty sure that he grew up thinking that gay people were only this caricature, this nameless freak, like many of us did. Gay men always dress a certain way, they're annoying, loud, touchy, and lesbians are always disgusting and manly and smelly. This is what he was taught, and there's no indication that he ever grew *out* of this mindset.
Yes, I believe Nicky enjoys a lot of the things he does, but I also think he's portraying the part of who he thinks he *needs* to be. And everything outside of those boundaries is still new and unbelievable. He's still a child, and relatively new to being openly gay.
And he's so proud. He can't think of anyone being anything other than proud of what they are. Nicky sees things as very black and white (completely gay or straight as a rod, hatefucking or about to get married) and probably thinks that if you're not out and proud, you're working with internalized homophobia. He never wanted anything other than to be free, and he cannot even think about the fact that some people don't want that level of fanfare.
He expects anyone who's queer to immediately come and talk to him. He's trying so hard to be the safe, iconic gay that other people can look up to and latch onto. He thinks that the only thing stopping people from screaming their sexuality to the world is homophobia, therefore they would at least tell him.
He doesn't get that people (Andrew, Neil) might just want to keep things private, because, to him, privacy equals secrecy, secrecy equals shame, and, well, there's nothing to be ashamed of!
Or maybe I'm just rambling. Idk guys this is my hot take of the week or whatever
ADDITION: guys I edit it to baptist I'm SORRY for the previous mistake I was sleepy.
ALSO ALSO the fact that he had to choose to be baptized?? That he's being faced with the choice he made and the nature of what he is?? The nature versus nurture themes HELLO?? This man is driving me crazy

You're all fucking wrong about Catholic Jason he wouldn't feel guilt about Jack shit, ESPECIALLY not killing. He would get the All-Blades and be convinced that this is God's go ahead and divine confirmation that he's right about everything and all of his opinions are valid and everyone who opposes his worldview is a moron blinded by idealism and naivete.

biting my fingernails down to the quick as I see the rare post being like "you bitches and your measly $20 donations think that absolves you of anything think again" gaining notes because you are all worrying me rn by discouraging smaller donations and implying that donating is supposed to be 1) some kind of moral absolution and 2) that it only works in large sums
