rebecca watches ds9: emissary
ok I decided to just not liveblog tng but I’m gonna give it a shot again for ds9! I am told this is the best one so I’m excited
ah yes, borg picard
rip to all these fucking starships
rip jennifer too
quite a beginning!
healthy father-son relationship!!! gotta love it
and there’s deep space nine!!!!
gonna be weird not to hear the “space, the final frontier” monologue
damn this place is a DUMP
oh the ferengi! clearly they won’t be leaving
oh god kira is Intense lmao
odo! the goo man!
I’m not sure the Prime Directive applies here lmao
why DOES sisko want quark to stay
ah ok, for the economy
kira arms,,,,,,
well let’s hope the govt doesn’t fall! civil war sucks
do bajorans have a thing for ears or
ah yes, time travel
so what exactly ARE the orbs then
why does no one in star trek ever specify what the thing someone is gonna want to see is?
i guess quark opened up shop again!
jadzia is so hot oh my god
ok bashir seems like a dick but the fandom likes him so i look forward to seeing how that happens
two hours. slow computers indeed
ah a worm flashback
gross
gul dukat showed up and my dad, who has never seen a cardassian, went “yuck”
the what belt
sisko wanted quark to stay here, why would he close the place suddenly
of course odo was the bag. somehow i’m not surprised
ok they have a vehicle, so they can boldly go places if they so desire
oh is that the wormhole i’ve heard about?
yep! gamma quadrant!
hm. all narrative evidence suggests that this is the celestial temple. it does not look terribly celestial
jadzia’s perspective seems to disagree!
wonder why they’re seeing it differently
we lost dax!
“what is this time?” ah so these are EXTREMELY different creatures
how tf do you create a wormhole??? (i say, with no idea how wormholes work)
“it’ll take two months” “we need it there tomorrow” kira do you understand how time works
none of this plan makes any sense. that’s how trek works ig
odo said he has no idea if there are any others like him and dad was like “i sure hope not!”
bashir expects people to be quite a bit smarter than they are
these creatures don’t even BELIEVE linear time exists
baseball still exists in the 24th century. great news for my dad
that cardassian is really close to the screen!
no shields????
NO ONE understands the passage of time here
bashir’s about to get hit HARD by reality
why is jennifer a perfect pristine corpse? she should be all fucked up. i’m not even sure what the cause of death is
(i know why she’s a perfect pristine corpse)
but the “i see her like this” would hit harder if she was all fucked up
and there goes all your photon torpedos! hope you don’t wind up needing those
dad asked me “how are they fooling them into thinking they’ve got five thousand photons?” and i would like to know the same thing
episode 1 and the station’s already in peril. classic
wonder what’s IN the gamma quadrant, aside from those weird guys
oh I like Kira
alright that was the pilot!!! i’m a fan

I don't think I've mentioned it before but my mum was deep into star trek when she was younger- to the point of making scrapbooks, getting into an American fanclub (which was a hassle) and watching episodes aired in german.
When she was stuck at home and stumbled upon star trek picard (which was rolling out episodes at the moment) she watched all of it and happily rambled when I got home, it was really sweet :)
I wonder when she will take revenge on me for always pronouncing Spock's name wrong
awwwwww that’s really sweet. I’m glad she was able to watch all of Picard. It’s always nice when you get to see your parents be so excited abt smth.
funny thing: I’ve actually only ever watched one episode of the original series lol. It was my dad who got me into star trek, and he was really into the next generation (tng), so he wanted to watch that first.
however, I did not vibe w/ the first episode, so we watched voyager first (my beloved <3 <3). Then we watched enterprise which was okay. Not my favorite but not bad, y’know? Then we watched tng and deep space 9.
I’ve also watched picard and lower decks, and I’m in the process of strange new worlds, but the tng, ds9, and voy era is rlly my favorite star trek <3
anyway sorry to ramble lol I just rlly love my funky little sci-fi shows <3
#okay wait how are you pronouncing spock?? I’m curious now#stella rambles#sioster#anyway I 100% recommend star trek if ppl are into sci-fi

Hey Janie! I’ve been wanting to watch Star Trek at some point, but I’m not sure whether to start with TOS or dive right into TNG. I haven’t seen any Star Trek except some of the newer movies. I’ve seen some Star Trek stuff from you a few times and each time I think “I’ll start that soon.” Any suggestions on what the best place is to start?
Omg yes yes yes! I’m stupidly excited for you; you are in for wild ride. Please excuse me as I vibrate out of my skin with suppressed delight and attempt to keep this short.
I would absolutely start with TOS.
For one thing, it IS the beginning from which all other Trek has sprung, and holds up surprisingly well. but also? It’s far less daunting as a newcomer to begin with a series that has only 3 seasons to get through (as opposed to TNG with 7). There are definitely a handful of TOS episodes you could skip and never regret missing (let me know if you ever want a comprehensive list! Although honestly part of the fun is how dang stupid some of the really terrible ones actually are, so there’s that).
Now, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched the whole of TNG, but iirc the first…maybe 1.5-2 seasons? were just…not the best. Don’t get scared off! It does improve! And I have a lot of love for both series (As well as DS9. And even most of Voyager. Enterprise can go straight to hell as far as I’m concerned). I grew up watching Star Treks TNG and DS9 with my mom, and I didn’t actually find TOS until my early 20s. I remember wondering where the hell it had been all my life and being absolutely delighted that I’d found it.
I do think you should watch as many of the series as you’re interested in, eventually. But in my opinion, you should begin at the beginning. And if the original doesn’t trip your trigger? There are plenty of other flavors of Trek to choose from :) Happy watching!
xoxo

!!DS9 season 5 spoilers!!
"The recent borg attack."
THEY DID NOT JUST DROP THAT IN THERE WITH NO CONTEXT WHATSOVER BEING GIVEN BY THE SERIES. NO MENTION OF ANY BORG ATTACKS HERE.
(I know vaguely it's to do with TNG - one of the movies I believe? But STILL. I thought there was a season or so to go! Can't just shock a girl like that.)
Wish I hadn't known about changeling Julian though.
Also I am really enjoying our "ask game", so to speak<3 I am planning on replying but I have quite a few thoughts to sort through first.
(OMG because you said you’re on season 5….that means in season 6 you’ll finally watch In The Pale Moonlight. Please give me alllll your thoughts on that episode once you’ve watched it okay!!!)
I think I remember them mentioning the Borg attack and I loved it because I loooove these little “Easter eggs” (if you can call them that). If you haven’t watched TNG yet…please do it after DS9!!!!! It’s really worth it (most of it anyway).
I also love our ask game btw!!!! Whenever I see you in my inbox I’m super excited, so thank you for just rambling about Star Trek in there! I always enjoy reading your thoughts!! There are actually so many DS9 episodes I’d love to hear your thoughts/opinions about!!!
(Btw I’ve seen you repost a couple of posts in German before so if you are/speak German…Hallo, ich bin auch Deutsch lmao 🖖🏼)

I did it!!!
Okay y’all as of today I’ve watched all of TOS, TNG, and now VOY yay! Now on to DS9 :)
Some of my thoughts Endgame:
Double the Janeway is double the fun!
We got to see Harry as Captain which was amAZING
I agree, screw the temporal time directive
7xChakotay was just as... cringey as I’ve heard (like where the heck did that come from? Um nowhere???)
Props to Harry for his motivational “Here’s to the journey” speech #captainmaterial
Bye-Bye Borg
tHeY mAdE iT HoMe yessss
I’ve been waiting to read a lot of VOY fanfic so I can’t wait to start by reading the Counterpoint Vignettes and the Traveling Woman series.
#i feel acomplished#i'm just so glad they made it home!#i also need to watch tos/tng movies#probs over winter break#i’ve heard good things about ds9 so i’m v excited#also i watched it out of order cus when i first started watching st that's all that was on cable tv#star trek#voy#star trek voyager#story time with sarah#12/11/17

I was curious - who are your top ten favourite characters through all of the Star Trek series and why? I really enjoy your art, great job! It's always exciting when your stuff comes up on the dash because it's just *that good* and another thrilling installment!
First of all, thanks a lot !! It always makes me super happy when I hear people are excited about my art :D
And uh.. Oh that’s a tough one. I could easily tell you my fave character for each show, but an overall top 10? Let me think…
1 - Doctor McCoy and Spock
Theses two have been my fave TOS characters since I first watched the show back in 2015. And TOS may not be my favorite Trek anymore, but it will always have this special place in my heart ‘cause I’ve been obsessing over it for so much longer than the other shows (I started watching them back in like September 2020). So yeah Bones and Spock come first. And they’re both number 1 bc I was never able to choose between them and I probably never will
2 - Doctor Bashir
Hhhh Julian I love him I was part of the Elite Intellectuals who liked him even in the first DS9 season when he was annoying (maybe because him making the worst first impression on his future friends is something I find extremely relatable ? hum). I love his evolution too even if I’m not a fan of the Augment thing. He’s also very cute and hot I want to peg him
3 - Kira Nerys
Kira is hand down the best female character in all of star trek. Episodes focused on her were always interesting, and idk I’ve always loved characters that are very religious (without being zealots) ? Idk why, I’m a strong atheist so it’s super unrelatable to me but it makes me more interested and invested in them for some reason. Anyway she is also super pretty and hot and I love her smile and her voice and I’d let her step on me any day
4 - Tuvok
He’s just really cool and I love Vulcans. And also I think his actor is the only one beside Nimoy (and maybe the second actress who played Saavik) to really perfectly grasp how to play a Vulcan, and that makes him really compelling
5 - Will Riker
I really love this jazz himbo and I absolutely don’t know why ! By all accounts he shouldn’t be my favorite TNG character but for some reason he is
6 - Data
Ahh what could be said about everyone’s favourite android that hasn’t been said. He makes me very emotional for some reason, sometimes he’s so adorable I want to cry and every time something bad happened to him i’m just :’’’(
7 - Shran
This guy probably appear in like 6 episodes total (and I’ve only seen 3 of them so far) but he just carries Enterprise so much. He just makes the show 10 times better every time he walks on screen.he’s also played by Jeffrey Combs which gives him a bonus
8 - Q
Also a guys who steals the show every time he shows up. Less than shran tho but just because TNG is really much more solid than Ent. He’s just so damn fun
9 - Dukat
Ohh boy this is gonna piss off some people. But listen this guy is by far the best Trek villain. He’s ridiculously charismatic and makes every scene he’s in super entertaining no matter how wonky the writting is. It’s hilarious watching him getting in the most ridiculous situations but he can still be threatening when needed. He’s definitely an interesting character, he’s a gigantic asshole but as a character I just can’t hate him. Also, as many of you are aware, i’m a lizardfucker... so there’s that
10 - Worf
That’s it that’s just worf what else is there to say. I love this dude i’m so happy he got to be on both TNG and DS9
Honorable mentions who almost made it to the list : The EMH, Quark, Seven of Nine, Malcom Reed, Jadzia Dax, Captain Picard
Anyway that’s all I have sorry for the long post lol, I realise that my reasons for liking theses characters are always something like “I just love them and also i’m horny” but hey. When I love something I don’t always have a good explanation as to why okey

Go watch the original series! It’s the most like SNW in tone and there’s no other show that you need to watch to understand it. There’s a reason why it kicked off one of the longest running franchises ever. Granted, you do have to deal with the 60s-era commentary on women and race- where they’re being progressive for the time but it doesn’t hit that way anymore. If that’s not something you wanna deal with at all, totally understandable. I personally find that it’s annoying but ignorable (generally).
Depending on where you watch it, the first episode will be different. Originally, they filmed a show with captain pike (!!) and the crew that they use in SNW (mostly, there are some new folks). Don’t watch this episode (pike is not as lovable as he is now). It’s called “The Cage”. The first episode with Captain Kirk is “The Man Trap”. If you want to start from the beginning, start there.
The fun episodes are SO fun, they’re fresh and new and exciting and about the same level of serious as SNW. I’m watching through it right now and it is quickly becoming one of my favorites (I’m a big ds9/voyager fan).
Also… a lot of the new shows (like snw) are paying homage to tos and tng like we’ve never seen. I find that it is tiring to constantly have a show not focused on itself but focused on something that we’ve already seen, like it’s total purpose is to worship the earlier work. At the very least, watching tos will give you some context for all that, and also maybe be a breath of fresh air! They had nothing to hold up as the standard of “Star Trek”, because they were making it!
Also, it’s only 3 seasons, unlike most of the other shows.
Shifting gears a little: if that doesn’t sound appealing, or you start it and all the scantily clad women and bad racial stereotypes are too much to look past, I think you should try Voyager.
Voyager, in spite of being a relatively serious show, is also known as one of the more goofy ones in terms of what they get up to. Like every show, they have some really dark episodes, but it’s not the same as ds9 or Picard. It’s got its own issues (like the fact that the Native American consultant that they hired to advise their work for their only native character was a fraud and it shows), but it’s fun, it’s kooky, it’s got some very silly episodes and some very very good episodes.
It also has a very solid pilot (usually listed as one of the best Star Trek pilot episodes), which you could watch if you wanted to just test out the show.
Whatever you decide, I’m sure you’re going to have a great time! I love Star Trek, and I love the time I’ve spent watching it and getting to know it better. Happy days are coming!
star trek fans what do I watch next
* the only star trek I have watched is strange new worlds, which I have now finished and enjoyed very much
* I particularly like the fun shenanigan episodes
* I have knowledge of most other major star trek characters by osmosis
* based on reading summaries I don't think I would enjoy picard or ds9
* based on reading summaries the kids shows sound cool but I don't know whether I would get into them enough
should I next try tos, discovery, voyager, prodigy, lower decks, or something else??? and how do discovery and strange new worlds fit together?

been warned that trek has been fucked up about disability pretty majorly lately. like, completely disregarding all the amazing things we got from geordi and bashir and sticking to worf in early tng territory, which is really distressing to hear tbh. i’ve always thought star trek handled disability so much better than most media, but had a lot of room for improvement, especially around mental health and neurodiversity and especially after ds9. and i get snw is before those, but when i say ‘worf in early tng’ bad, that’s Bad and i don’t want it on my tv in these times.
after talking to my fav trek friend tho, even with this warning, i’m def going ahead with watching snw. gonna enjoy looking at ortegas and uhura. gonna probably rant on here about the disability stuff if it goes the way i think it will. gahhhhh so excited for all the ladies tho????? so glad that at least we’re in an era where there’s so many major female characters and some of them are gender nonconforming. so so nice. my inner baby kiradax shipper is yelling and crying and cheering, etc
#toasty watches star trek#no reblgs pls n thank#siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh there are wait to do this star trek!!!!!!#if you feel the need to defend the show pls realize that i am sleep deprived and fatigued and recently went through a traumatic surgery#and just don't wanna hear it!! maybe i'll be more up for discussion while i'm watching but pls not currently#but it should never ever be 'i would rather be dead than disabled' end of story no discussion

i love these star trek asks, what a fun idea. # 8, 12, 20, 24. ✨
8. Where would you spend your off hours?
I think I'd like to hang out in Ten Forward. You get the benefits of Quark's without the hassle of Quark himself.
12. What's your favorite Star Trek outfit?
I really like the red dress, I believe we see it twice. Once in DS9 on Fenna, who is an imaginary figment from Nidell's mind, and in Voyager on Leosa, Barclay's girlfriend Dabo girl who helps steal his hologram.
I know there are more interesting and alien outfits, but this is the first one that comes to mind, and second it's Kira's uniform san jacket.
I guess you could say my style is boobie prison.
20. Who do you think is the most underrated character?
This one kind of stumped me for a bit, because most of the underrated characters have decent fan bases. So I'm going to go with Lewis Zimmerman, creator of the EMH, who inadvertantly discovers Julian is genetically engineered, dates Leeta momentarily, and lives on a sick space station. I feel like we could have seen a few more of his crazy adventures. He pretends to be uptight, but really, he's a party animal.
24. When did you fall in love with Star Trek and what made you fall in love with it?
When I was a kid, I loved Reading Rainbow, didn't we lucky ones? So when I started seeing Geordi la Forge on TNG, I was excited!! I was still single digits and before I had a chance to show interest my life was rocked by trauma.
The next thing I remember watching was DS9 when I was 10 or 11. I would stay up until 3am to watch it. I loved it, even though I had no idea what was going on in it ha ha. Jadzia was my favorite at that age. She was so strong and interesting, I wanted to be her.
Later on, when I finally found a stable home. I'm thinking 2011 or so maybe. I finally got to sit down and watch whatever I wanted! I watched Voyager first. It was so incredible to me, and I've since watched TNG, DS9, and Voy a dozen times. Not to mention the movies and the new series that have come along too.
#star trek#trekkie#star trek asks#sorry it took so long#I'm slow lol#i want asks but I'm so slow lol

TV/Movie Log 2021
Something I always tell myself I’m gonna keep, and I usually do not do.
Already covered games I played.
TBH, some of this may be late-2020 too. This is not a complete list obviously, just what comes to mind about what I watched this year.
The things I watched the most are easy:
MST3k - I subscribe to the Twitch channel. I have it playing in the background like... so much. Including literally right now as I type this. Sometimes I switch to the Rifftrax channel. But I like MST3k more. It’s comfort food. The only thing I hate is the commercials for the MST3k Twitch Channel!!!!! that they play almost every break. Well, one of the new one is for the current tour, which I already have tickets to (but don’t know if I’m going to go to, thanks Covid.) Catch me diving for the mute button on my keyboard at the end of every break til it’s over.
Also I rewatched both Jonah seasons this year. I love literally all of MST3k and can’t wait for S14.
Star Trek - I started a rewatch in 2020, I finished... mostly finished... sometime this year. I uh, haven’t made it through TOS, and tbh I should just pick a list of “20 best TOS episodes” and watch those + the movies. Also haven’t rewatched the Kelvin movies. I will! But yeah otherwise I made it through TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT rewatches, while keeping up with all the current ST shows. Need to rewatch Picard before S2 starts airing, really looking forward to SNW. And Lower Decks S2 was FANTASTIC.
Survivor - I DO NOT KNOW WHY. I watched the seasons they had on Netflix when I finished my ST:ENT rewatch earlier this year and then... I don’t know what happened. I went back and watched every. single. Survivor. season. Mostly while at work instead of keeping the MST3k channel up. I’d seen seasons 1 - 6 & 8 when they aired, but otherwise hadn’t really thought about Survivor much in 15 years until... now.
Hilariously, though, I just completely burned out while the new season was airing and I was still in the middle of watching Season 40, which was the all-winner season I was really looking forward to. I know who wins, and I’m cool with their win, but I got really bummed out that all my faves got knocked out early and dumbly. I’ll try and push through here soon just so I can say I’ve watched them all, though.
Critical Role - Kept up with it, 3 - 4 hours a week. Of course there was that huge break between seasons. I haven’t watched the last episode or two of EXU though. I should.
.
New Stuff (in absolutely no order)
For All Mankind - Read Sepinwall’s 20 best shows of 2021 and I’m going to work my way through most of them. Started with #1. Surprised at how much I loved it, can’t wait for season 2.
Wandavision/Loki/F&WS/What If?/Hawkeye etc. - Yeah some of those were 2020, I don’t remember. I kept up or caught up with all of them, they were all varying degrees of good. I’m not super into the MCU but keep up enough.
Rutherford Falls - I try to watch whatever Michael Shur produces and this series didn’t disappoint. Michael Greyeyes was a particular surprise in this, really loved his character, but it was a funny, good show that had some great Native American representation well and tackled some difficult issues. Crossing fingers for season 2.
Resident Alien - Came for a Robert Duncan McNeil produced/directed show about an alien with Alan Tudyk, stayed for a really funny show with compelling mysteries and also great NA representation. So excited for S2 starting soon. (As a note, I haven’t yet watched Reservation Dogs but it’s on The List.)
Doctor Who: The Flux - Honestly early on this season felt like the embodiment of the MST3k Concepts song, but it... mostly... came together in the end. Will miss Jodie while she’s gone, but I have mixed feelings about the Chinball era overall. (TBH I really liked it until the Timeless Child stuff, and am not a fan of that whole storyline. Hoping they are able to pull up after this.)
Grand Design - A British show about people who build their own houses, hosted by a nice British bloke named Kevin. It became my comfort/cool-down for sleep show after I ran out of The Repair Shop episodes to watch. I have scraped as much content of this show as possible, and I need more.
Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath - I’ve been pretty well-versed about Scientology for a long time, but really enjoyed (in a horrified way) Leah Remini’s series. It got pretty repetitive in the 3rd season, but I think it’s done a lot of good to get the word out about what Scientology is all about.
The Witcher S2 - Liked it a lot more than S1. I know people are mad it went way off the track of the books, but I didn’t play the games or read the books and hey, I like it for what it is.
Mythic Quest - Knew I’d love it when I got around to watching it, and I was right. Fantastic show, nails the nerd/game dev/MMO vibe so well with great characters and a lot of depth.
Kevin Can Fuck Himself - This show mostly worked and I really enjoyed it, but I also think it’s good that it’s ending after 2 seasons. Looking forward to season 2 and hoping for a good wrapup.
What We Do in the Shadows - Another show I knew I’d love but just never got around to before this. I was dumb to hold off on it so long. Just an amazing show that I love so much now. Mad at me for denying myself this show, but also glad I didn’t have to wait through that S2 cliffhanger. But now I’m waiting through that S3 cliffhanger. :(
Only Murders in the Building - What an absolute delight this show was. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good, but it was great the whole way through and nailed the landing. Anxiously awaiting S2.
Ted Lasso - YES YES WE ALL LOVE TED LASSO. Me included.
Brooklyn 99 - I miss you already. :( Great final season, though.
Handmaid’s Tale S4 - Still watching this. Don’t regret it. Still hard to watch, still kinda misery porn, but I liked most of S4 and am interested in what happens in S5.
Leverage: Redemption - Still kind of can’t believe this is a thing, but it IS and I LOVED IT. Bring on S2, pls Aldis, be in it at least as much as last season.
The Stand - Started in 2020, ended in 2021. I had really high hopes for this adaptation of one of my favorite books. And in the end... my reaction was mixed, leaning more towards positive, but also my feelings were better than most people I guess. I liked a lot of the story updates, but jumping around in the timeline hurt the story way more than helped, AND they sidelined important characters -- including my favorite characters (Tom and Nick) and that hurt. Vegas was... not correct at all, either. And hoo boy Trashcan Man was very wrong. But I also liked Fran more here than in either previous adaptation and the guy they had playing Harold was amazing.
Sweet Tooth - An interesting story, I’m still curious about what’s going to happen in S2. Not my favorite thing of the year, not my least favorite either.
Upload - Greg Daniels’ show about people living digitally after death (sort of like a series long San Junipero.) It was okay, glad they’re getting a S2.
A Smaller List of Other Stuff I Watched:
Nailed It - It’s SO FUNNY even if it’s basically the same every episode.
The Circle - I really hate that I love this show.
Whose Line is it Anyway? - Another comfort show I only sorta keep up with.
.
Currently Watching
Taskmaster - My current comfort show. I’m only on my first season if it (and it’s like season 7) But it’s SO funny and I’m loving it. Just tons of laugh out loud moments every episode.
The Expanse - I have tried at least twice before to get into The Expanse. It is absolutely a show I SHOULD love. I am now mid-season 1 and enjoying it more than my previous attempts.
Star Trek: Discovery/Prodigy - Enjoying them both! I mean, Prodigy is a kid’s show but I am loving Janeway Hologram and am holding on tight for whenever Chakotay shows up. It’s very good for what it is! And Discovery is chugging along, about as good as it ever was.
Station Eleven - Rec’d by Sepinwall, definitely one of the best things I’ve watched this year, but it is a difficult show to watch, especially right now.
Book of Boba Fett - Love The Mandalorian, loved the first ep of BoBF
.
Rewatches
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - This show is so good, so much better than you think it’d be. I originally got into it after season one, I think? Loved watching it live, loved the rewatch more. Also, I like New Greg just as much as Old Greg, FIGHT ME. Also I love the ending. (Also Rebecca should be with Greg or Nathaniel, I’m equal on both, or NO ONE is great, too. Not Josh, love him as a character, not for Rebecca.)
The Mole - I loved this show when it was on, and rewatched all 4 US seasons this year. It was still really fun, especially since I had literally forgotten the Winner and Mole from each season, except the newest. I could remember the final 3 or 4 people, but it was nice getting to guess all over again. I wish they’d bring this show back.
Leverage - To prepare for Leverage: Redemption I rewatched Leverage! It’d been quite a few years since I’d done a Leverage rewatch, even though it’s one of my constant lowkey fandoms. So worth it. I mean, there are bits of it that haven’t aged well, especially around technology, but it 95% HAS. And Parker/Hardison/Eliot OT3 now and forever.
.
Gave Up On
The Boys - I didn’t enjoy S1 a lot but finished it. Got several episodes into S2 and decided it just wasn’t for me. Not saying it’s bad, a lot of people loved it, but... yeah, not for me.
I tried a few other reality shows as well, but they were pretty much too vapid for me to stick with. Probably watched the pilots for like half a dozen shows and was like “I’ll get back to this” and did not, or just decided they weren’t for me to start with.
.
Movies
Army of the Dead - the dumb Zombie movie with Dave Bautista. Of course I mostly watched it for Tig, and was not disappointed with Tig.
Snake Eyes - I went to the movies twice this year. This was the first time, with a small group of friends. Back in the summer... when we thought everything was gonna be OK. I miss June. The movie was dumb and fun and just fine for a summer flick you don’t have to think about. But I LOVED GI Joe as a kid it was maybe my first “fandom” that I was into independently, not because it was something my parents loved like Star Trek/Star Wars. So I got a kick out of it.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage - The other time I went to the movies. It was a mostly empty showing with a friend. I enjoyed the movie again, as a “turn your brain off and JUST ENJOY IT DAMNIT” watch, as it should be for Venom movies.
Psych 3: This is Gus - I love that we’re still getting new Psych, I hope they get all 6 movies they planned for. Heard a few things that make it sound like movie 4 should be getting greenlit. This is Gus is maybe my favorite so far.
Spider Man: No Way Home - I did watch it. And all the previous Spider-Man + Tom Holland movies before it. Worth it. One of the best entries in the MCU.
Gunpowder Milkshake - It was fun! Not a great movie, but a very fun, stylish movie with lots of kickass ladies.
A Castle for Christmas - I watched a dumb Christmas movie this year purely because it had Cary Elwes in it, Brooke Shields was a nice bonus. I don’t regret it.
Jupiter Ascending - I finally watched this crazy movie. I now get what everyone was talking about. Also don’t regret it.
The Last Blockbuster - Because Blockbuster was such a part of my childhood / young adulthood. Still, I like having everything at my fingertips better.
OK I’m tired of writing this list. I’m gonna go play some video games now. :)

LwD 1.10, “No Small Parts”
Well, that was the most fun I've had watching Star Trek in literally a quarter of a century.
I had high hopes for this series. I love TAS, largely because of its wacky outsized concepts that could only have worked in animation—not that they all did work, but the potential was so apparent to me, even as a kid reading the Alan Dean Foster novelizations—and as an adult, there's something about the imagination of Lower Decks's FX setpieces that transcends even the glorious CGI bonanzas of Discovery.
Pause for a confession. I've long pushed back against criticism of serialization in new Trek. That's just how TV is now, okay? Might as well complain about it being in widescreen. But I'm backing down a little, because I've realized there is something about Star Trek that's inextricable from at least a partially-episodic format. And while Picard was telling a different kind of story, I can't deny that my favourite episodes of Disco have been the ones with a mostly self-contained A-plot. After 10 delightfully episodic instalments of LwD, its focus on long-term development of characters instead of a season-spanning puzzle-plot (okay, mostly just Mariner, but we only have 10 × 22 minutes and she is the star) has been downright refreshing.
So here we are, at the end of the most consistent and well-executed Season 1 of a Star Trek series since, arguably, Those Old Scientists. And sure, if they'd had to produce another... yikes, 42 episodes? Then sure, they probably would have dropped a clunker or two—but they didn't, and winning on a technicality is still winning. I'm practically vibrating with excitement for Disco to come back next week, but damn, I'm going to miss this little show while it's on hiatus.
Spoilers below:
Something I've been keeping track of finally paid off this week! (Which never happens to me, lol.) The destruction of the USS Solvang marked the first present-day death(s) of any Starfleet officer on Lower Decks, the only other on-screen killing at all being a flashback in "Cupid's Errant Arrow". Which makes sense, being (a) a comedy, and (b) about typically "expendable" characters: it hasn't been afraid to flirt with a little darkness here and there, but killing people off at Star Trek's usual pace wouldn't just be wrong for the tone, it would be downright bizarre.
But... people die on Star Trek. That's one of the core themes of the show, really: space is full of knowledge and beauty, but also danger and terror, and believing that the former is worth the risk of the latter is (according to Trek) one of humanity's most noble traits. I'm the least bloodthirsty TV watcher I know, but the longer we went with a body count of nil—ships completely evacuated before they were destroyed, main characters hilariously maimed without permanent consequences, etc.—well, I didn't mind per se, but the absence of truly deadly stakes was definitely getting conspicuous.
Turns out they were saving it up for maximum impact. And holy fuck, I've never felt such a pit in my stomach watching a ship get destroyed that wasn't named Enterprise. It felt grim and brutal and somehow both much too quick and dreadfully inevitable—and yeah, it looked extremely fucking cool—and I'd like every other Star Trek property for the rest of time to take notes under a large bold heading labeled RESTRAINT.
Comedy doesn't need to do this, but my favourite comedy does, and in a way that few other art forms can even approach: lower my emotional defences by making me laugh, endear character(s) to me with goofy-but-relatable antics—then BAM, sucker-punch me in the motherfucking feels. M*A*S*H is probably the classic example on TV, Futurama was notorious for it, and even Archer has pulled it off a few times; it's also a staple of some of my favourite standup. I wasn't sure if Lower Decks was going to go there in Season 1—and wasn't sure if they'd earn it—but I knew if they did, that they'd nail it, and damn. Feels good to be right.
Last batch of notes for the season!!! I rambled enough already, so let's do it liveblog-style:
I fucking KNEW they were going to use "archive" visuals from TAS at some point, I KNEW IT :D
"THOSE OLD SCIENTISTS" ahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I like chill and confident Boimler a lot? You can really see—
oh bRADWARD NOOOOO
That opening shot of the Solvang tracking down to the red giant was extremely Discovery-esque... minus the motion sickness, that is
A lady captain AND a lady first officer? That's—oh hey, it's Captain Dayton's brand-new ship. Hahaha, that means they're totally fucked, right?.
Yep! They sure a—umm, wh—shit, okay, but—oh no—no, you can't—wait DON'T
...fuck
FUCK.
Narrator: "And then Amy needed a five-hour break."
[live-action Star Trek showrunner voice] "Gee, Mike! Why does CBS let you have two cold opens?"
Okay, yes, the bit with Rutherford cycling through all the different attitudes in his implant was transparently an excuse for Eugene Cardero to vamp while waiting for something to do in the story, but as far as I'm concerned they can contrive a reason for him to do a bunch of different silly Rutherfords in a row any time they damn well want, because that was classic!!!
EXOCOMP EXOCOMP EXOCOMP EXOCOMP
AND THE EXOCOMP IS PAINTED LIKE THE EXOCOMP IS WEARING A LITTLE EXOCOMP-SIZED STARFLEET UNIFORM
EXOCOMP!!!!!
The slow burn and now the payoff of the Mariner-is-Freeman's-secret-daughter plot has been executed so well. I'm beyond impressed with this writer's room, y'all—they are threading a hell of a needle here
"Wolf 359 was an inside job" would have been a spit-take if I'd had anything in my mouth
...how many memos do you think Starfleet Command has had to issue asking people to stop calling the USS Sacramento "the Sac"?
CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW THEY'VE DECORATED THE SHUTTLECRAFT SEQUOIA THOUGH
Is, uh, is it weird if I'm starting to ship Tendi and Peanut Hamper a little? It is weird, isn't it. I knew it was weird...
Coital barbs??? I take back everything I said about wanting to know more about Shaxs/T'Ana.
The "good officer" version of Mariner is... kind of hot, tbh! But Tawny Newsome has done such a great job of building this character all season that her voice getting uncharacteristically clipped and martial and "sir! yes, sir!" is also deeply, deeply weird
Ah, so this is literally exactly like when TNG (and DS9) would bring in, and then blow up, a never-before-seen Galaxy-class ship, just to underscore that we're facing a real threat this week, baby. And hey, it fucking worked—my heart was in my throat, omg, for the reveal of the—
PAKLEDS?????????
The fucking PAKLEDS have been gluing weapons to their ships for the last 15 years. GREAT.
(We interrupt the SHIP BEING SLICED INTO SCRAP for an interesting bit of world-building: on Earth, the traditional First Contact Day meal is salmon!)
"I need a dangerous, half-baked solution that breaks Starfleet codes and totally pisses me off! That's an order." I'm starting to think Captain Freeman might actually be overqualified for the Cerritos, y'all—she's REALLY awesome
OH SHIT IT'S BADGEY, this is a TERRIBLE IDEA
"How much contraband have you hidden on my ship?" "I don't know! A lot!"
Awwww, Boims!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHA, FUCK THIS, PEANUT HAMPER OUT
BADGEY NOOOOO
AUGHHHHH WHAT THE CHRIST DID HE JUST—BUT—RUTHERFORD'S IMPLANT????
RUTHERFORD!!!!!!!!!!
SHAXS!!!!!!
F U C K ! ! ! ! !
ahaIOPugdfhagntpgjrq90e5mgu90qe5;oigoqgw4ouegrw5SP;IAEHURVa IT’S THE TITAN???????????
IT'S CAPTAIN WILLIAM T. RIKER ON THE MOTHERFUCKING TITAN??????????
i'm screaming I'M SCREAMINGGGGGGTGGGTGQER;LBHAOIBVNV;OAPBIJNVagr;h;oagruipuwtnaetbaetgq35ghqet
I'M SO GLAD THIS WASN'T SPOILED FOR ME WTF
I AM WEEPING LIKE A CHILD
...
(Just a brief 20-minute pause this time)
And oh wow, seeing Will and Deanna hits different after Picard too, in a few different ways, which I may even get into later now that my heartrate is back to normal, lmao
Oh, I am always here for some jokes at the expense of the Sovereign class. The Enterprise-E sucked. They should have built a new bigger model of the D and new Galaxy-class interiors for the TNG movies, and I will die on that hill
OKAY, FINE, YOU GOT ME, RUTHERFORD × TENDI WOULD BE ADORABLE AND THIS IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY GOOD SETUP FOR IT
Awwww, Shaxs though :( Congrats on the single most badass death in Star Trek history, dude. The Prophets would—well, the actual Prophets would probably be slightly confused about most of it, but Kira Nerys would be proud of you and I feel like that probably counts for more. RIP, Papa Bear
I am here all damn DAY for the Mariner–Riker parallels, ahahahahaha
Pausing it to record my prediction that Boimler's commitment to not caring about rank anymore is going to last 3... 2...
Yep.
Bradward, how DARE YOU.
"Those guys had a long road, getting from there to here." OH FOR THE LOVE OF—
What a brilliant way to resolve and renew the various character arcs and relationships moving into Season 2! The writers could easily have brought everything back to status quo—chaotic Mariner fighting with her mom and being a bad influence on Boimler, etc.—and done another 10 just like these, but I suspect that wouldn't have been ambitious enough for these writers. What a blast. I cannot wait for more.
Thanks for following along, friends! Stay tuned for my (similarly patchy and amateur) coverage of Discovery, starting next week!

Hi, I have a question (feel free to answer this) what do you think about ethan peck as spock in star trek discovery (or about the spock in discovery)? 🙈🙂
The simple answer would be I love him!
But it goes a bit deeper than his looks, his voice etc.... lol
I’m very bad at articulating about things in general but more so if it’s about something I love. When I was young my dad introduced me to Star Trek. He was watching TNG, DS9, and Voyager as it was airing and I saw a few of them when I was young (didn’t watch tng, ds9 and voyager series until I was an adult) but I really got into the TOS when he did rewatches of some eps. I was captivated by the colors and campiness of it. And gravitated to Spock right away. His character just spoke to me. FLASH forward to 2009 when the first AOS movie was released- super excited and anxious cause ya know it’s characters I love revamped in a sense. But all the cast one me over. Zachary as Spock 🖤🖤🖤 *chef kiss* and flash forward again to when Discovery announced that Spock was gonna be featured in s2... I was beyond excited and again nervous.... and saw who was cast and I’ve seen Ethan in other things. So I knew I liked him as an actor. but still like can he pull off Spock? Does he understand Spock.... ya know??? needless to say he won me over. If you didn’t notice by all my recent edits of him hehe :)
A real quick question about Spock in Disco- I love his journey and storyline in the season. The glimpses of his childhood and his sibling relationship with Michael were just everything to me. I loved them so much. To see where he started at the beginning of the season (or when he finally showed up in the middle of the season lol) to where he ends up at the end is amazing. And I can’t wait to see him in Strange New Worlds with the crew of the Enterprise! Pike, Number One (Una), and everyone else we’re gonna meet!!
I’ve loved every version of Spock that blessed my tv screen. 🖖
I hope this was a satisfying answer to your question. :)

hi! new blog!
you can call me mac and/or antoine and i’ve been a big ol’ star trek nerd since i was a very small child so this series means a whole lot to me!
I’ve watched DS9, TNG, and Voyager many many times. I’ve also watched Enterprise, TOS, Picard, and all the movies, though i’m much less into them. i guess at some point i should watch Discovery but right now i’m rewatching DS9 for the gazillionth time lol
my favourite characters (in no order) are probably Paris, Harry, Data, Geordi, Spock, and literally every single character from DS9 (though i am especially partial to the fruity space fascists)
can you tell DS9 is my favourite... because it is
idk what else to say umm i’m not entirely sure how active this blog is gonna be but i hope i’ll be able to keep up posting somewhat regularly! very excited!
(also in terms of pronouns, any and all please)
