per your request for Star Trek asks: any thoughts on what was going through Julian’s mind when he gave garak those chocolates? or what was going through Garak’s mind then? ^_^

I honestly love that scene very much and there is a lot to unpack about it in my opinion!

Specifically about the chocolates, what I’m thinking is that (besides the fact that it was simply a sweet gesture) Julian had some clear intentions for giving them (back) to Garak. Garak would undoubtedly think of Julian when he carefully unwraps the chocolate while on the mission (I can just imagine his little smile T_T), and thinking of him would:

1. I guess in a way calm him down (because Julian is someone he genuinely enjoys being with and even though they’re bickering all the time and Garak has more trust issues than a Romulan, Julian is the person he’s closest to on DS9). Thinking of him and his sweet gesture might be soothing.

And also:

2. Give him reason to come back from his mission (alive). The chocolates were actually intended to be a gift from Garak to Julian (as discussed in the beginning of the episode) but now Julian is giving them back. For me this kind of implies that Garak would have to make up for it eventually and give Julian the chocolates he’d promised him, but for that he’d obviously have to come back from the mission first. So basically it’s Julian, once again, indirectly telling Garak that he should be careful and come back (and well, I guess not rejoin the Obsidian Order) because he’s waiting for him. Julian is super worried about him as we can see in the beginning of The Die Is Cast ;)

I kind of would’ve loved if the episode had ended with Julian finding the chocolates in his quarters or the infirmary (maybe Garak purposely didn’t eat them so he could give them back right away?), though that’s just the garashir-shipper in me and I do like the original ending of the episode very much.

Bonus: I love how their hands touch when Julian gives Garak the chocolates before he leaves! And the way both keep smiling at each other throughout that scene makes ME smile so much too ♡

what is a cute garashir headcanon you have?

There are soo many, but I’d like to believe that Garak hyperfixates on Kukalaka a bit. He cuddles with it at night (even though he denies doing so) because the fact that it smells like Julian makes him feel safe and at peace. Sometimes he also talks to it when he misses Julian or takes it to his shop, but most importantly: he uses Kukalaka as a means to bribe his boyfriend when he feels lonely: “I have kidnapped Kukalaka (once again). If you want to have it back alive and well, you have to come and spend time with me. You’ve got one minute to decide.” Obviously he has no intention of giving it back—which Julian doesn’t mind (even though he always pretends to be annoyed with Garak), because he too uses his stuffed animal as an excuse to show up at Garak’s quarters whenever he misses him, saying he wants to “take it back” but then just ends up staying and spending the night at Garak’s quarters. And the next morning he just conveniently forgets to take Kukalaka back, knowing very well he can show up at Garak’s quarters the following night as well.

THEY DID NOT JUST DROP THAT IN THERE WITH NO CONTEXT WHATSOVER BEING GIVEN BY THE SERIES. NO MENTION OF ANY BORG ATTACKS HERE.

(I know vaguely it's to do with TNG - one of the movies I believe? But STILL. I thought there was a season or so to go! Can't just shock a girl like that.)

Wish I hadn't known about changeling Julian though.

Also I am really enjoying our "ask game", so to speak<3 I am planning on replying but I have quite a few thoughts to sort through first.

(OMG because you said you’re on season 5….that means in season 6 you’ll finally watch In The Pale Moonlight. Please give me alllll your thoughts on that episode once you’ve watched it okay!!!)

I think I remember them mentioning the Borg attack and I loved it because I loooove these little “Easter eggs” (if you can call them that). If you haven’t watched TNG yet…please do it after DS9!!!!! It’s really worth it (most of it anyway).

In light of the Khitomer Accords being reinstated, I think it's hilarious how the federations keep befriending their f*cking enemies so the writers have to invent new ones.

Well, the galaxy is vast so inventing new enemies is plausible but the classic villains are still my favorites (Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Borg—even though I have to admit that the Borg were a bit too overused for me sometimes, even if they’re among my favorite villains).

I think that in the end, becoming allies is the goal, right? Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations!

Yes I remember that episode clearly, I also coincidentally got to rewatch it a few weeks ago because it was on TV! It made me realize again how impactful that scene was (for me), and how I was glued to the screen when I watched it for the first time because I was scared about what would happen.

I haven’t been on Star Trek tumblr for too long but I have barely seen anyone talk about this part of the episode, or maybe I just missed the whole discussion. But I do think it’s a super important scene both for Miles’ character and also DS9 as a show on the whole. DS9 deals with trauma, PTSD, depression, grief etc. much more nuanced than most of the other Trek shows that came before and also some that came after (e.g. TNG and VOY. Both crews underwent immense trauma in some of the episodes and then the next episode all the stress and trauma they suffered was long forgotten—except for that one TNG episode with Picard after his Borg assimilation). That’s part of why DS9 is one of my favorite shows.

And I’m glad Bashir got there in time.
