Happy Birthday to Julian Bashir!!
My friend and I watched the series finale on August 29th. We definitely didn’t plan ahead to do that but it was perfect.
To celebrate both, I did some art about it.

Abscess ‘Verse — Sloan/Bashir (Abusive) // Garak/Bashir (Eventual) // Bashir & Kukalaka & Garak (Very Important Friendship!) Warnings for Noncon & Dubcon, Intimate Partner Violence, Lots of Gaslighting, PTSD, Flashbacks, Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms…
Please pay attention to the tags before reading! Julian suffers, a lot. Has a fair amount of Hurt/Comfort too though.
A canon divergent AU in which Luther Sloan is assigned to DS9 during Season One for Intelligence and Security purposes. He enters a relationship with a wide-eyed Julian Bashir, and it slowly becomes apparent that said relationship is deeply unhealthy and abusive. Following Sloan’s removal from the station, Julian struggles with putting himself back together after having spent two years revolving himself around the abuse. Thankfully, he has friends who will help try and pick up the pieces with him.
Currently consists of three entries:
Abscess — An outsider POV about the residents of DS9 watching the initial abusive relationship as it unfolds. Drain — The immediate aftermath of Julian trying to adjust to life on the station again now that Sloan is gone. Inflammation — A brief timeskip to the beginning of Season 3, details Garak/Bashir’s first time, and calls back to Sloan/Bashir’s first time.

do you think julian cherishes kukalaka so much because it’s the one thing that stayed the same and is still around to remind him of his life (of himself) before the genetic engineering? his old teddy bear is something he had (and brought him comfort) before he was essentially made into different person - a person his parents preferred him to be - without his consent. that’s the one thing he still has from his life as his natural self, something tangible from his life as little jules. that beat up teddy bear is the one thing he still has that was part of his old life he never got to choose and only gets to mourn.

Propaganda under the cut~
Propaganda for Kukalaka: "He is Julian Bashir's beloved teddy bear and first ever patient. He brought him to medical school and to the station. He once enlisted two kids to steal him back from his ex gf after they broke up. He says bye to him before he leaves on trips."
Propaganda for Wiggly: "he's the personification of an eldritch god who tricks the US president into starting World War 3. He's irresistible to adults with problems (aka everyone), so they start riots to be able to buy him (he's only 49,95!). He also has a silly little voice."

A large section of my brain is dedicated to imagining Garak’s reaction to Kukalaka. Consider this: outfits!!
I know some people have mentioned it before but Garak making cute little outfits for Kukalaka to cheer Julian up is so!!!!
At first, Garak does it discreetly. He makes little accessories like a bow tie or scarf and tells himself it’s cause he likes the challenge of making teeny tiny things. It’s definitely not because he enjoys playing with the bear. He never lets Julian see his creations. It’s way too embarrassing. Eventually, he moves on to full on clothing. He makes dresses and shirts and suits and kinda gets obsessed with dressing Kukalaka up. Still, he doesn’t say a thing to Julian. Besides, his teddy bear is a much quieter model who won’t complain a bit.
Eventually though, the jig is up. Garak somehow forgets to take off Kukalaka’s outfit one day or leaves behind a tiny accessory. Either way, Julian comes home to his bear looking a lot more dapper than usual. Garak is, of course, embarrassed. He can’t even try to deny it because who else would make such a thing for a stuffed bear. Julian, however, is overjoyed. He thinks it’s adorable and any trace of a bad mood he had after a long day has disappeared.
Maybe, whenever Julian is sad or angry, Garak brings out a new outfit for Kukalaka to cheer his doctor up.
Ahhh I’m sorry my post got so long! I might write a fic like this when I get the time but who knows ^-^

The Mole
[Sloan drabble for the prompt "borrowed." Summary: Sloan turns one of Julian Bashir's most trusted allies against him.]
Sloan carefully hollowed out the bead and affixed the probe inside it. The sensors would record and transmit information about the target’s habits and whereabouts back to him.
Truthfully, he was already intrigued. The case for the target being a Dominion spy was almost too easy to make. No agent would be that obvious.
Yet, barring him turning out to be an enemy agent, Sloan thought this one even had recruitment potential.
But that was getting ahead of himself.
He reattached the stuffed bear’s eye, maintaining its well-worn lopsidedness, then transported it back to exactly where he’d taken it from.
(that's it, that's the fic. ao3 link)

Hilarious how the ds9 writers were ballsy enough to establish Bashir as a 30 y/o man who owns a teddy bear, but then we never get to see them in the same shot together? Like Leeta gets to cuddle Kukalaka but all Bashir can do is call him 'old chap' and smile at him from across the room. And guess which charecter got a on-screen gay kiss??? I wOnder if tHere's a TeRm for ThIs KiNd oF DIscRepAnCy

what is a cute garashir headcanon you have?
There are soo many, but I’d like to believe that Garak hyperfixates on Kukalaka a bit. He cuddles with it at night (even though he denies doing so) because the fact that it smells like Julian makes him feel safe and at peace. Sometimes he also talks to it when he misses Julian or takes it to his shop, but most importantly: he uses Kukalaka as a means to bribe his boyfriend when he feels lonely: “I have kidnapped Kukalaka (once again). If you want to have it back alive and well, you have to come and spend time with me. You’ve got one minute to decide.” Obviously he has no intention of giving it back—which Julian doesn’t mind (even though he always pretends to be annoyed with Garak), because he too uses his stuffed animal as an excuse to show up at Garak’s quarters whenever he misses him, saying he wants to “take it back” but then just ends up staying and spending the night at Garak’s quarters. And the next morning he just conveniently forgets to take Kukalaka back, knowing very well he can show up at Garak’s quarters the following night as well.
Thank you for the question!♡

Do you ever think about how Julian can never get rid of Kukalaka no matter how old and threadbare he gets, because he knows what it's like to be gotten rid of because you're not good enough?
Do you ever think about how Leeta saw Kukalaka and loved him despite his imperfections, and how that must have made Julian feel?
Do you think that maybe Julian not only misses Kukalaka, but also feels guilty for abandoning him and worries if he's being looked after enough?

I think it also proves his parents lied about how poorly Jules was doing before the genetic modifications.
They said he was falling behind more every day, and have told Julian that he struggled to understand the difference between a cat and tree.
This kid understood Kukalaka was hurt, understand how he could be fixed; and then had the hand eye coordination to sew up him up so his friend would be ok. That that's the sort of manual dexterity task is tricky for any 5 year old.
He has enough object recognition to know a teddy bear, and had normal attachment to see him as a friend.
Especially when gene therapy would have been legal if Jules was really struggling as much as they claim.
They just wouldn't have been allowed get mods to make him better than human norms, or push him to go into certain professions. That's not a big concern if you're kid is really really struggling.
Earth covers all medical requirements, and will feed, house and care for any citizen. So it's not the same pressure of having a disabled kid might be now, even with gene therapy.
But they wanted a kid who was a genius, and for him to bring home awards.
They must have been banking on Julian having very few memories when grown up to hid what they did to Jules.
This just makes me very sad that he didn't want a disabled child, and thought he needed to be 'fix' at the age of 6. Especially when it's likely he only had a mild form of autism.
They're are unfortunately a lot of people that hate the idea of having a disabled kid. Even when all financial pressures are removed. We just don't reflect well on their ego.
So the deal with Kukalaka ~
is that's not Julian's teddy bear. It's Jules's. Julian stitched up "his first patient" when he was five, well before he got his genetic modifications. And for someone who considers himself unnatural, has trouble reconciling his "realness" with the fact that he was "designed"... that is the most comforting thing in the entire world. Here he's got tangible proof, real tangible proof, with Jules' stitching still in the leg and everything, that his love of medicine, his love of what he does, is real.
(that bear's a talisman. Of course he's bringing it to DS9)
