Song Review: I’m Your Man by Mitski

Rating: 10/10

I’m Your Man is possibly one of my favorite songs by Mitski. The lyrics flow incredibly well, and the meaning behind every word is clear.

Every day I am impressed more and more with the depth of emotion in not only Mitski’s voice, but in the rhythms and melodies she uses in each of her songs.

The change of perspective from angel, to dog, from dog to man, from man to god, and from god to man is incredibly effective in invoking feelings- weather those feelings are of longing, sadness or an acceptance of inevitability.

I have no criticisms, this is possibly my favorite song overall.

Some lyrics that stick out to me are

“You Believe Me Like A God, I’ll Betray You Like A Man”

And

“So when you leave me I should die, I deserve it dont I?”

I’m so convinced I’m Your Man by Mitski is a majorly daisira coded song. Like, that song is absolutely about my favourite corrupt sapphic pairing. If you don’t believe me I’ll make my case:

So, starting with surface level cuz I gotta mention it, the whole hound theme in general. Especially the barking at the end is just so Daisy.

But the song itself feels to me like how I think of Daisy’s relationship to Basira. She knows loving her is corrupting Basira in so many ways, she can see the ways this love is sending Basira into a spiral of becoming a worse and worse person.

To me it feels like Daisy is attached to Basira but doesn’t understand why her feelings would be reciprocated. She feels like if Basira fully understood her she wouldn’t be in love with her, she assumes a logic that love doesn’t follow.

There’s just this codependency turned mutual destruction to daisira that this song absolutely nails in my opinion. This inevitability that they’ll ruin each other in the process of being in love.

To me Daisy’s final arc during season 5 is almost like her trusting Basira to kill her not only to stop her from causing further harm and as a final act of true, uncorrupted justice. But as a punishment for all the ways she’s hurt Basira herself, even if Basira doesn’t know that. Trusting her to take revenge for the ways she’s been wronged.

But this is just my interpretation of their dynamic, characterizations and the song itself. To me it’s a perfect fit.

house md dog motif where house is a dog but not in the cute way. he’s a dog in the fact that he begs for love like he begs for food and bites the hands that feed him in hopes that they’ll stop giving in to him. he only lets his guard down around one person. the person that has him on a leash. he snarls and whines and bites but deep down he’s afraid of losing the small bit of comfort he has. wilson’s dog hector was named after house since it would nip at people’s ankles and it wasn’t house trained. ironic. house acts like he’s god but really he’s just a dog. an abused dog, whose been abandoned and dropped by people he loved (stacy) once his problems, his pain, was too much. house is a desperate dog feeding for scraps of love under the table, only enough that he could stomach until one day the only thing he’ll have left is himself because that was his destiny from the start.

Thinking about how the first half of I’m your man by Mitski is so Bruce coded and the second half so Jason coded and they’re saying it to the other.

Jason believed in Bruce and thought of him as larger than life and infallible and Bruce destroyed him like he is… like (what he thinks) is in his nature… and in turn Bruce believed in Jason’s good heart and intentions and believed he instilled his moral code in him enough but Jason betrayed him like a man… DO YOU SEE IT

Dog-coded Bucky really comes full circle when Gale dances with Meatball. If ever confronted, I don’t think Bucky could ever deny the allegations of acting like Gale’s loyal dog. John is always at Gale’s heel and searching for affection. And then during that dance he’s looking at Gale with such love in his eyes and it’s at that moment he wishes he could be that dog.
