Could I ask for Rosie x a new delivery guy (reader) who gets adorably flustered whenever she compliments (and eventually flirts with) him? He eventually works up the courage to start complimenting her back.
(Maybe she occasionally gives him tips in the form of kiss marks that turn him into a bumbling, lovestruck fool?)
If you like what I’m doing consider tipping me for priority requests & access to characters I don’t usually write for such as Charlie, Valentino, Carmilla, and more.
Tumblr media
When you got a job at the Helluva Post, you never would have guessed that your afterlife was going to change in the best way.
You were one of the only people willing to venture into Cannibal Town for deliveries.
At first, it was purely because you’d get paid extra since no one wanted to go there and then it changed.
It changed when you were delivering a package to Rosie’s Emporium.
That’s where you met Rosie with her huge smile and shining, captivating dark eyes.
Her hand gently brushed against yours as you exchanged the package.
“Thank you, darling. I try not to have stuff delivered too often, I know you all don’t like coming out here, but Ive been so busy I haven’t had the time to leave.”
You blushed and blinked several times. Your skin tingled just a bit.
“No problem, it’s a pleasure.”
You were hooked since that day.
You always tried to catch a glimpse of her when you delivered things to her town from that moment on.
Rosie didn’t pay it too much mine until you entered her emporium during a delivery.
You didn’t talk to her. She was too busy helping her people but you did look around. You didn’t buy anything but you felt like you knew her far better now.
Then she started ordering more and more packages.
She always started a bit of small talk—
“The weather’s real nice today.” “So, is that a uniform or just your style? I’ve got some clothes I’d think would look real spiffy on you.” “Did you hear what happened in the media district?”
—and you always fumbled with a reply.
“It’s been real. . . sunny recently.” “Um, yeah, it’s a- a uniform. But I could. . . I could, um, come over?” “No, I don’t really keep up with the news. What happened?”
She was a real pretty woman. You can’t be blamed for being flustered.
The interactions became common.
Once she asked you to come inside and set up a radio for her that she’d gotten costume made but didn’t know how to set up.
You’d gotten a look around her home and it was beautiful. You said as much and her smile was addicting.
That’s what encouraged you to say your compliments aloud.
She always got a smile so sweet on her face.
Slowly, your confidence began to build as you complimented her.
Then it was all shattered when she placed a kiss on your cheek and you were once again reduced to a flustered mess.
If you like what I’m doing consider commissioning me for canon/canon stories AND personalized canon/reader stories.

WIP ask game: 11, 17, & 20!
Hi! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend! Thanks so much for sending these in!
I’m going to answer these for Survivor Blues.
11: Which character do you have the most in common with?
SB Reader has A LOT of me in her. Probably more than any other Reader character I’m currently working on. She’s very protective of her family, she puts others ahead of herself, she’s a baker (she’s better than I am, but I’m pretty decent for a hobbyist) she was a runner (which comes with it’s own inherent psychoanalysis of what are you running from? but that’s a whole different post) she loves really hard.
But in terms of a canon character that I’m most like? Probably Maria. She’s also very protective - to the point of coming off a little harshly when she thinks someone could potentially be a threat, and very harshly when she decides that they in fact are one. I’d literally never stop my husband from talking to his brother on the radio, though. (Throwing some shade for that move, Mrs. Miller.)
17: Does your WIP have any themes or motifs?
It does! The main theme is learning how to live once you’ve survived. Also, healing from and processing grief, as well as forgiving yourself for who you had to be to get through the things that could have killed you. And love. Love as the reason for everything.
The motifs that go along with those themes are Reader’s (and Gavin’s) wedding rings, Joel’s watch, the Wyoming magnet, annnnnnd a few things that haven’t come into play yet 🤐
20: Post a brief excerpt.
This is actually from part 8. I wrote it a while ago thinking it would be in part 7, but then I rearranged the outline a little bit. So it’s an upcoming part… just not the next upcoming part:

Types of Characters
So first off this information might confuse you but I’m going to try hard to make sure it doesn’t and if it does ask a question so I can help you better understand it.
So in this book, we have three types of characters; Original Characters, Original OCs, and Modified OCs.
Original Characters are characters that I have taken from either the Danny Phantom series or the Hazbin Hotel series and done nothing to (examples are Jazz, Sam, or Tucker). Now for some of them, they’re getting a different backstory (or just getting one in general for some of them), and I may change their personality but it’s nothing you wouldn’t find in any other AU book.
Original OCs are characters that I added for the story, so literally what an OC is (examples are Stella and Eleanor).
A Modified OCs is the one where I think I’m going to lose you. This kind of OC is where I create an OC but give them the look (which will be modified to match the way this AU works), personality, or backstory of a canon character or I take two characters and do the same thing but they’re one person. So technically this is two things but it’s also probably confusing to you so I’ll break it down.
Lilith is a character from Hazbin Hotel, the mother of Charlie, but in this story, she is the sole leader of Hell. Lucifer is not the leader of Hell in this story, as of right now he’s isolated in Limbo. However, in the show, Lilith isn’t present so most of her personality I’d have to go off what the internet has made her out to be; a loving mother and big supporter of Charlie and the very sexy and loving wife of Lucifer (the second part I wouldn’t be using). Lucifer is shown in the show and I love his personality and design. When I first started this, I was just going to use Lilith as an Original Character but started to realize that I was implementing her design to another character and I kept envisioning her looking like a female version of Lucifer. So Lilith’s look is a female Lucifer with some of her actual character designs implemented and she has the combined personality of Lucifer and herself. When you meet her later on you’ll see what I mean.
Now this is the second half of what I was saying about a Modified OC, let’s talk about the first. For this, I’m going to use a future character, who you wouldn’t see for a while in this book but she’s one of the main characters in the second book. Her name is Vanessa and she is based off of Alastor from Hazbin Hotel. Vanessa is meant to be the female version of Alastor with a little design change but the two have many things in common. For one they both have the radio effect on their voices, hate technology (though Vanessa is a little bit more open to it), and have a radio show as well. There are other things but I’m keeping that under wraps.

FUNNY DELTARUNE [DISCU55IOM THREAD]:
MIKE, SPAMTON, AND TENNA
WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO ENCOUNTER [BASELESS CONJECTURE] AND [HORRIBLE OPINIONS]!!! YOU HAVE BEEN [YELLED AT]!!!!
Also it should be mentioned that anything I write here isn’t going to appear in character on the blog. I make it a point to only cover whats been made explicitly canon (just a personal thing)
But I’ve been mulling over the Spamton sweepstakes stuff and I figured I’d share my personal thoughts
1. MIKE
It was made pretty explicit in the hidden sweepstakes monologue and QnA that, contrary to most common theories, Mike is NOT the TV themed darkner hinted at the end of Chapter 2, nor is he even someone Spamton dislikes.
Mike is, seemingly, actually the only person (other than Kris) that Spamton seems to like or respect at all, given that he’s the only one who Spamton doesn’t feel like deserves justice for wronging him.
Tumblr media
Spamton also vehemently defends Mike from a question about who he is, because Spamton believes the question is coming from one of that “[Cathode]’s Crew”
Tumblr media
This also re-contextualizes a line that Spamton says ingame about Mike
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Spamton is saying here isn’t,
KRIS!! DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR FROM MIKE! THE MAN’S A CRIMINAL, I TELL YOU!! A CRIMINAL!!
What he’s actually saying is:
KRIS!! DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR FROM THAT TV!! THE MAN’S A CRIMINAL I TELL YOU!! A CRIMINAL!!
He’s begging Kris not to listen to anything that (presumably Tenna) has to say about Mike.
But we ALSO know that, for some reason, Spamton hasn’t been in contact with Mike for what seems like a very long time.
The shop dialogue is Spamton talking about how he doesn’t “Need” Mike
When everything fell apart, Mike seemingly isn’t somebody Spamton could turn to for help
At the end of a violent NEO fight, Spamton says this about Mike
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s screaming out loud to Mike, as if he doesn’t know if he’s really there or not.
So, from this we can infer:
1. Mike is somebody Spamton values/respects very highly
2. Spamton has not been able to communicate with Mike for what is presumably a very long time. Mike also cannot or will not help Spamton.
Tumblr media
3. Spamton, for some reason, does not view this lack of contact as a betrayal on Mike’s part, which is very interesting, considering that that is basically how he feels about literally everybody else in Cyber World who isn’t talking to him
4. Spamton believes that Mike should be “kept out” of whatever beef is between him and Tenna
5. According to Spamton, Tenna himself might have it out for Mike, to the point where Spamton feels the need to protect him from anybody he thinks is associated with him.
2. TENNA
There’s a lot less to go off of with Tenna
All we really know about him is that Spamton despises him, and blames SPECIFICALLY him as the reason he lost everything.
We do not explicitly KNOW if Tenna IS the TV, but I feel like we can be fairly confident in this assumption
Like earlier, according to Spamton, Tenna might have it out for Mike as well.
That’s about it !
3. BASELESS CONJECTURE
Now is the time for UTTER BULLSHIT!!!
I have a couple of different thoughts on Mike and Tenna, but again, I must stress these are simply personal ideas I have, I’m not asserting these as fact
Mike and Tenna
If we assume that Tenna is the TV, and we assume that Spamton’s repeated defense of Mike from Tenna means that Tenna has it out for him, I have one idea that comes to mind
Tenna is a TV themed darkner (Antenna), while Mike is a RADIO themed darkner (Microphone).
Their relationship is a literal interpretation of the phrase, “TV killed the Radio Star.”
Mike, as a radio themed darkner, represents a form of entertainment that has been broadly forgotten by lightners, which is a direct result of the rise of Television. In this case, it would put Mike and Tenna directly at odds with each other, as Tenna seeks to establish himself as the true ruler of Lightner Entertainment, and getting rid of Mike permanently in order to achieve that end.
This would explain why Spamton is so keen on protecting Mike from him, Tenna quite genuinely has it out for his life.
There isn’t any kind of radio in Kris’ house though, from what we can tell, so again, this is just an idea
ANOTHER BULLSHIT IDEA
This isn’t really something I believe but it’s something that I thought of and I figured I’d share it.
If we assume that the person who had been helping Spamton on the phone was Mike, there IS a story we can weave there (if we make a bunch of shit up)
Hear me out
Tumblr media
Spamton was simply calling his phone for help, and eventually he made the right phone call.
If this person was Mike, then perhaps he had called into a Radio Broadcast by coincidence
Mike, somehow, began helping Spamton advertise his products, and brought him a lot of success
The man on the phone is described as having “disappeared”
Tumblr media
The Blue Addison comments that they could “still hear someone on the other end,” of the phone when they went to check on Spamton, but when they put the receiver to their ear, it was nothing but garbage noise.
Spamton believes it’s Tenna’s fault that he lost everything, so here’s an idea:
Mike was helping Spamton become a Big Shot, but suddenly disappeared. What if this disappearance wasn’t Mike abandoning Spamton, it was TENNA forcing Mike off the air and into hiding. Mike could no longer help Spamton, and Spamton lost it all.
What if that final conversation Spamton was having was cut off because the signal was disconnected. The garbage noise from Spamton’s phone wasn’t the same as the garbage noise from Kris’ phone, it was Radio Static.
That’s why the Blue Addison could “hear someone” before actually picking up the phone. The voice was “running out,” being consumed by the Radio Static until the connection was totally lost. Whether Spamton was talking to Mike or Tenna here is up to interpretation.
This is why Spamton doesn’t blame Mike for anything. Mike was the only one who ever truly helped him, it was Tenna who took everything from him, forcing Mike off the air and making him unable to help Spamton anymore.
Like i said, I don’t particularly believe this and there’s a lot of holes but it’s just an idea
Thassa bout it! Don’t forget to [like an suscribe] for more [NOTHING!! NOTHING!! NOTHING!!]!!!!

How famous is WIK, canonically?
When he first appears, it’s during open house day at the music faculty. His unnamed friend introduces him as “really popular on social media” and people cheer, but Porschay’s friend has no clue who WIK is.
Yes, Porschay questions his friend’s ignorance, but Porschay is a fan. He could be surprised that said friend doesn’t remember Porschay talking his ear off about WIK. I’ve personally mentioned a lot of celebrities (music, acting…) whom I think are “common knowledge” to friends and relatives as a teenager and even a young adult. They’re rarely known or only if you play a song people might have heard on the radio.
Speaking of the radio, it’s not featured much in KP, and we don’t hear any of WIK’s songs playing unless it’s part of the scene/the OST.
WIK plays his song and people clap their hands, but apart from a few fans I’ll get back to later, no one seems overly familiar with the song, there is no singing along. Later down the line, WIK’s friend asks questions for the quizz, and while WIK has music videos of his own, we’re talking about covers too, so WIK is a youtuber, with a couple of original songs featured in the show.
As I was saying earlier, a few students are really on top of things, they know the answers and want a shirt, so let’s assume 4 superfans, and a couple of casual fans. What’s left? Clueless students? We could assume everyone somehow heard of WIK at least, they’re here for open house day at the music faculty, they’re interested in music and could be invested in what students from this university produce, but it’s still very niche.
Moreover, when Porschay comes up to WIK to get a shirt after the quizz, I can’t help but notice that there isn’t a crowd. WIK is taking pictures but he’s not surrounded by fangirls, none of his schoolmates are around except for his friend, no security... He signs the shirts on the spot, it’s very amateurish as far as fan meetings go.
Tumblr media
It reminds me of walking past a guy taking pictures with a couple of starry eyed girls at the O2. I could only assume he was some kind of influencer but neither me nor my friends (I think there were 6 of us?) could recognize him.
Kim doesn’t go to uni often, as we learn later, but when he does go to class he seems to be able to move about without being followed. As far as security goes, it’s mostly building security at his flat and bodyguards from his family. Overall, nothing suggests that he’s overly famous.
Let’s talk about Kim himself for a second. Kim wants to get away from his family, and the real challenge for him is to pursue a career in music, his passion. He never mentions anything about being famous. When he’s on stage he’s playful with his friend, but slightly shy/embarrassed with the spotlight and almost looks bored when he’s not singing, although he seems appreciative of his fans and how they notice little details.
Even with Porschay, Kim seems uneasy with being the center of attention.
Kim behaves like a youtuber more than a celebrity and canon seems to support this theory. It works out considering his social status as well, Kim can afford the studio, the guitars, the production costs, the sheer time it takes to both make music videos/play music and be nosy about his family's doings.
I’ll take a second to consider his casting as well. Jeff Satur. He’s mostly known as a youtube cover artist as well as some acting. Now, I’m not overly familiar with him and I don’t know much about the entertainment industry in Thailand, so I looked up Jeff’s charting positions: his best ranking was #115 and the worst was #288.
I had never heard of him before (I’m from Europe, so it’s not unexpected). I’d say his popularity outside of Thailand is close to non-existent if you’re not already involved in BL or specifically interested in Asian music.
With around 1 million followers on Instagram, he’s doing well for himself, but I wouldn’t say he’s famous yet (wishing you all the best, Jeff).
Which leads me to my next point: I assume Jeff is supposed to represent Kim’s popularity by sheer power of suggestion.
According to the analysis above, WIK is a local celebrity at best.
One could argue that Kim is popular in another area (fashion, producing music…) but it’s not shown on screen.
Tumblr media
Is it even safe for him to be overly famous? The exposure could lead to complications if anyone notices his ties with the mafia, and his father might even interfere to avoid such a thing.
Assuming the Why Don’t You Stay video is canon (I’m torn, it’s also promotional material for the series and filmed as such, but for the sake of the analysis…), WIK sings in a mostly empty coffee shop, and no one pays attention to him. It might be just a way to perform in his spare time, or a small event he organized himself but the turn out is… small, to say the least.
Is Porschay the only one there?
There could be a lot of explanations for this situation so I’m not hellbent on treating it as canon, but it is an interesting choice nonetheless. The music video could feature a small crowd and it doesn’t. Maybe they’re invisible to Kim, maybe it’s thematic and specific to Kim and Porschay’s relationship, but still.
Kim connects with Porschay over their song-writing, more than Porschay's attention to details on his youtube channel and the awestruck aspect of their dynamic. I think Kim went to music school because it’s what he’s really interested in and more than fame, he’s searching for a sense of community, which would make sense with the youtube channel as well, sharing music with others.
Does he have some kind of following? Definitely. A decent following? Perhaps. Is WIK famous? I don’t think so.

Muggle Technology Through the Ages:
A vague and incomplete timeline of what people were using when for writers who want to avoid anachronistic technology use in their canon timeline-compliant Harry Potter fic.
Keeping track of the evolution of technology is hard! Here's a cheat sheet for those of you who either a) like me, have trouble keeping track in your head even though you lived through it, or b) are young enough that you didn't live through a lot of it at all.
Phones:
Land lines were the norm well into the 90s. Not only that, but CORDLESS landlines didn’t even become prevalent until the mid 90s; they still cost hundreds of dollars in 1994, and the frequencies on them were weird, so you would sometimes hear your neighbors’ phone calls by accident. Ours used to turn on my little sister’s remote control Barbie car. We thought it was haunted.
Although cell phones have been around since the 80s, they were uncommon until the 90s, and then they were nothing near as ubiquitous as they are now. In 2000, when I was in high school, I had ONE friend with a cell. I got my first one in 2002, and it was only for emergencies while driving, because when I’d get lost I would have to pull over and use a pay phone otherwise.
Unlimited calling wasn’t a thing until 2002; until then, all plans were pay per minute. A lot of plans stayed that way for many years after. “Roaming” cost more. (Roaming was when you were outside of your own area code, basically.) When you moved, you got a new number.
Texting was expensive and difficult for ages. You used your normal phone numeral keys and a system called T9 tried to figure out what you meant, because every number stood for 3-4 letters. It was a giant pain in the ass.
The first full QWERTY keyboard phones came out in 1997, and most people didn’t have them until the early 2000s. I got my first one in 2007, and no one thought anything of it.
There was NO internet capability of any sort on mass market cell phones until 2000/2001. After that, it was still pretty limited until the iPhone came out.
Texting didn’t really become a big part of how we communicate until 2002/2003 for most people. And, like calls, they charged per text, so you were VERY careful and would get super mad at your friends who pushed you over your limit, because that shit was expensive. I can’t find info on when unlimited texting started being offered, but I didn’t get it until 2007/2008.
The first iPhone also came out in 2007. It was the first phone with full internet access. It was also the second full touchscreen phone ever, and the first one (the LG Prada) was only announced a month before.
Camera phones have existed since 2000ish, but weren’t the main method people used for pictures until much later, mostly because they were super shitty. I still had a separate, physical digital camera in 2008/2009.
Internet:
Consumer access to the internet was virtually nonexistent until 1995. My family got it circa 1997. It was all dial up.
Dial up was slow, sometimes you couldn’t connect, and it USED YOUR PHONE LINE. Remember, from above, the fact that landlines were the predominant phones until the early 2000s? Yeah. If you didn’t have multiple lines, you weren’t likely to be online for very long at a go. My parents limited us to 20 minutes. Also, sometimes, if a call came in while you were online, you’d get kicked off.
Broadband came out in the late 90s, and people were still commonly using dial up until the mid 2000s
WIFI wasn’t common for consumer use until the mid 2000s, either.
We may not have been texting, but we were all VERY into instant messaging. Pretty much everyone had AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) or ICQ starting in the late 90s as well. I did a lot of late night chatting when my family was asleep and I wouldn’t be tying up the phone line.
Social media & popular websites:
Here are some key dates for when various things that seem like they’ve been around forever actually started!
Google: 1998
Livejournal: 1999
MySpace (it was huge before Facebook and not mostly for musicians!): 2003
Facebook: 2004, and you had to have an email address from a college or university that had been formally included until 2006.
YouTube: 2005
Twitter: 2006
Spotify: 2006
Tumblr: 2007
Instagram: 2010
Tinder: 2012 (before that, the biggest online dating services were Match.com (1995), eHarmony (2000) and OkCupid (2004).)
Bonus: Netflix came out in the late 90s, but it was a physical DVD mail order subscription service. They didn’t introduce streaming until 2007!
Music:
CDs came out in the early 90s, but a lot of people kept using cassettes for a long time afterwards. I got my first CD player in the late 90s; portable CD players weren’t popular before that because the CDs would skip if you jostled the player. My first car (a 1991 model I bought in 2001) only had a cassette player, so I had this weird converter thing to hook it up to my CD player. Mostly I just listened to the radio, though.
Digital music wasn’t super big before the late 90s/early 2000s, and even then, we were mostly downloading (read: stealing) it and burning it to CDs. Napster was the main service we used for piracy at first; it came out in 1999. That’s around when mix CDs started overtaking mix tapes for wooing people with pointed song lyrics.
The first MP3 player came out in 1997. iPods (which were JUST for music) were introduced in 2001, and CDs only started to lose popularity around 2003. I got my first iPod in college (an iPod mini) and it was SO COOL. It came in 4 or 6 GB versions.
Some of this info is from research, some from personal (and American) experience, but hopefully it’s helpful! I didn’t bother to go into computers or TV here, but they’ve changed a hell of a lot, too, and I’m happy to do a run down some other time. Suffice to say that the TV I took to college with me in 2003 was a 12” screen tube TV with a built in DVD player, and that before leaving for college, I didn’t have my own computer—I shared it with my entire family. There were six of us. Yeah.

Read Part 1; Masterlist
The icon that marked where you were currently typing in your text blinked as you bit your lip. Looking back from where you were sitting at the kitchen table, you took stock of the open pantry once again. You were low on just about everything. With physical therapy exhausting your shoulder, it was hard to find the energy to lift any heavy bags. You had texted Sam for help, but unfortunately he was out of state.
“Bucky’s home, just ask him to go with you. He won’t mind” He had texted back.
You slouched back into the chair and groaned. You had only seen him in passing since he had helped you with the furniture. What was he, your live-in-caretaker? Was he just there to help you up and down the stairs and help you across the street? Sliding onto the floor, you made a small grunt as you felt your back straighten out and adjust to the floor. Resting a moment, you held your phone up and stared at the blinking bar. You hadn’t texted him before. Should you just call him? Or knock on his door? Ugh, why was this so hard. Whatever.
“Hey Bucky, I’m having trouble carrying stuff right now. Would you mind helping me out with grocery shopping sometime today or tomorrow? If not, no worries.”
Without a second thought, you sent it and set your phone down next to you. It was around 1PM, the only thing you having done up until then was getting dressed while sipping on coffee. Opting for a lazy look, you had worn soft leggings with an oversized sweater and fuzzy socks. Two simple braids and a headband kept your hair out of the way for when you eventually practiced. Only a few more weeks until you practiced with the actual orchestra. You should probably figure out something to wear besides lounge clothes.
The buzz on the floor caught your attention and you took a peak at your home screen
1 New Message:
Bucky Barnes: Sure, is now good?
Shoot. You quickly got up and walked to the bathroom. Your hair wasn’t too messy. Why do you look so tired? Opting for some mascara, you texted Bucky back before digging around in your makeup bag.
Yeah, meet at my car in a minute?
---
Bucky pocketed his phone and took a quick look in the mirror. Should he shave? Scratching his beard, he made a face before deciding against. It would take him more than a minute. Why didn’t he just say thirty minutes from now? Running a hand through his hair, he grabbed a jacket and walked out of the apartment.
As he walked over the freshly fallen leaves in the driveway, he opted for leaning against your car. He shoved his hands in his pockets and turned his head to look out over the water. It had been quiet lately, just chilly enough to silence the summer chorus of buzzing and croaks. Now all that was left was the occasional honking of geese flying overhead.
He had only been there for a couple of minutes when you came out onto the porch. You had hastily thrown on some brown leather boots, the left one still untied. The little bit of mascara and lip gloss you put on made you feel better about not looking like death. It was nice to do a little something, even if it was just the grocery store.
“Hey!” you said, slightly breathless as you bounded down the stairs, keys jingling in your hand.
Bucky echoed your greeting back to you with a small smile and wave.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.” You said, clicking the key fob to unlock the car.
“Oh it’s no problem. I didn’t really have much to do anyway.” He said, ducking his head to sit in the passenger side seat. He noticed how as soon as you closed the door, you clicked the locks shut. Then you brought your left heel up on the edge of the seat so that you could tie your shoe.
“Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Usually, I don’t need too much help, but I need cases of waters and stuff like that. I was gonna get someone to help me at the grocery store but I realized I’d still be left in a lurch once I got home. I figured if you needed, we could just get groceries together this time,” you explained while double knotting the laces.
Starting the car and putting on your seatbelt, you looked behind you out of habit to make sure you weren’t going to hit anything as you backed out of the driveway.
“Huh. It looks like it’s going to rain.” You said, observing the darker clouds and the wind picking up. Putting the car in drive, you started down the driveway.
“Music?” You offered, gesturing towards the radio.
“I don’t really know what’s been playing these days… or for the last sixty years if I’m being honest.” At least it’s nice not to have to lie about it, Bucky thought.
“Well, we have a lot to catch you up on then.” You said, stopping at the end of the driveway and grabbing your phone. Scrolling through your music, you hit the bluetooth button on the console.
“This playlist has all my favorite classics on it. Feel free to skip anything you don’t like.” You said, handing him the phone and turning onto the road. The music started, prompting Bucky looked down at the phone. September- Earth, Wind & Fire.
---
Four songs later you were at the supermarket, grabbing a cart and discussing favorites.
“That last one was good too. Which one was that?” Bucky asked.
“That’s Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd. Dave Matthews Band. Now mind you, some of those are way older than others. The only thing they all have in common is that they’re all at least ten years old.”
“Huh.” He’s really missed out on a lot.
The two of you continued chatting as you went through the various sections. A couple cases of water. A bag of salad. Deli meats and cheeses. Bread. Ground beef. Pasta and pasta sauce. The topic turned to older music from Bucky’s time.
“I’m surprised you have heard of her.” He said, raising his eyebrows in surprise.
“Well, I’m going to be honest, the only reason I have any knowledge of it at all is because I had to take a lot of Music History classes in college. For whatever reason, they thought that to play music, you needed to know every which way that it’s evolved throughout the years. Though, I have to say,” you paused, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “Now, I’m kind of glad I did.” You looked up at him slightly, face just a tad warm as he met your eyes. You both looked away and he coughed awkwardly. Feeling embarrassed, you scan the shelves of snacks before hearing him quietly say behind you-
“… I’m glad you did too. It’s different. And kind of nice to talk to someone about it. Who actually knows what I’m talking about.”
Trying to keep your smile small, you continued to look at the array of cookies on the shelf. A hand passed over your shoulder to take a pack of shortbread cookies.
“Hmm. Shortbreads.” You say, holding your arms behind your back. “Verrry interesting.”
“What?” He replied defensively.
“You can tell a lottttt about a man by his snack preferences.”
“Well, what do shortbreads say?” Bucky asked, leaning his forearms on the handle of the cart so that he was now eye level with you. It was too late this time to hide your smile. You turned back around to grab a pack of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
“If I tell you what they mean, you’ll just pick the kind that you think has the best traits. You’re not fooling me anytime soon.” You said with a laugh before you whisked yourself around the corner.
“Hey, that’s not fair, come back!” He pushed the cart around the corner where he ran into you hugging Sarah. The boys were with her and they went absolutely ballistic.
“Uncle Buck! Uncle Buck!” They shouted as they bombarded him.
“AJ! Cass! Stop acting crazy in the grocery store!” Sarah said, reprimanding them. You chuckled at the sight of Bucky being slowly overwhelmed by the two boys. He pried them off his legs and crouched so that he was eye level with them.
“Hey, I missed you guys. I haven’t seen you guys since the last time Uncle Sam and I came back-”
“-from fighting bad guys, right!” AJ said, getting a little too excited and causing Sarah to give him the look. Bucky tried not to laugh and held a finger up to his mouth to signal that they needed to be quiet.
“Yes, from fighting bad guys.”
You turned towards Sarah with a grin and put your hand on her arm.
“We’ll have to have all of you over, come see the new house. Will you text me a day next week when you, Sam, and the kids are free?”
“That sounds great. I’m so glad you got to move down here. I’ll let you know about next week!” Sarah said. She also walked around the cart and gave Bucky a hug. He returned it but glanced towards you nervously; You were already looking away. When they pulled away from each other, Sarah glanced in your direction and then at Bucky, a knowing smile on her face and eyebrows wiggling. Bucky made a face with wide eyes, letting her know to cut it out. Sarah laughed slightly while saying goodbye:
“It was good to see you, Buck.” Sarah said, laughing as she rolled the cart away, AJ and Cass in tow, who were both shouting goodbyes at Uncle Buck.
“Good to see you too…” He trailed off in her direction.
“Man, those boys really love Uncle Buck.” You said teasingly, making him jump slightly and turn around. You laughed and walked towards the next aisle, leaving Bucky red in the ears.
---
It was just starting to rain when you parked the car in the driveway. You grabbed some of the lighter bags and ran up the steps, hurrying to unlock the door. Bucky was piling on the grocery bags as the rain got heavier. He hauled everything inside as you held the door open for him. He lifted the groceries up onto the kitchen counter and made his way down the stairs again.
“Still have to get the cases of water.” He explained in response to your confused face. The rain was still getting heavier. Hauling the two jumbo cases onto his shoulder and carrying the last one by the plastic in his hand, he made his way up the porch, slower this time. You held the door open, looking incredulously again at how easy it was for him as he passed.
By the time he had set the waters down, you had grabbed a towel for him, extending it to him while looking away at from his drenched shirt.
“Thanks,” he said, toeing off his shoes and drying his hair with the towel before draping it over his shoulders.
“Please, let me make you some tea. You must be freezing.” You said, already digging through the pantry for some.
“Well, if you’re offering, I won’t say no.” He said, taking a seat at the kitchen island.
“Yeah, hold on, it’s kind of dark. Let me turn on the lights…” You trailed off as the light switch did nothing. Flicking it a few times back and forth, you sighed.
“I’m so sorry, the real estate agent told me it’s pretty easy to lose power in this area since there’s so many trees. They usually have it back on pretty quick though I’m told.” You said, now digging through another cabinet.
“It’s completely fine, you can’t control that. I’ll just take a raincheck-”
“Found it!” You said, cutting him off and proudly presenting the gas-powered single burner. You set it down in front of Bucky who watched as you also grabbed a tea light and a lighter from in the drawer.
“Would you like to stay for dinner?” You asked while lighting it.
---
Three more tea lights and a kettle of hot water later, Bucky was sitting with the towel draped over his shoulders, sipping on the warm cup of green tea. The flames created flickering shadows as you added the pasta to the pot of boiling water.
“I knew this was going to come in handy. I’m glad I saved it.” You said, setting a timer on your phone as you leaned on the counter across from Bucky.
“Why do you have it in the first place?” He asked curiously.
“I kind of had to hop around for a little bit before I got down here. I would stay in hotels but I didn’t want to eat out every night so this came in handy. Ole reliable.” You said, looking down at one of the tea lights.
There was a moment of silence before you pursed your lips.
“What’s wrong?” Bucky asked, setting the cup down.
“Has Sam told you… how I ended up here?” You asked, now looking straight at him. The look on his face told you the answer before he could respond.
“I see…”
“Hey, I’m sorry, I-”
You held up a hand to cut him off, soft smile on your face.
“No, it’s okay. I told him that if it ever came up, he could talk about it. I’m pretty open about it. How much did he tell you?” you asked, wrapping your hands around the cup to absorb some of the warmth.
“Just the basics. You two were together, then he got… violent. And you trying to leave.” He said, looking down into his cup.
“Yeah, that just about covers it… He kept following me after I got out of the hospital so I had to get a rental car and hotel hop for a while… When I got the house down here, I finally got my actual car and just booked it here. He’s never been to Louisiana before and he doesn’t know that Sam lives here now, instead of DC. I’m hoping he’s frolicking in city traffic, getting run over as he looks for me. Bucky snorted and tried not to laugh, which made you laugh.
“Sorry, it’s not funny.” He said, covering his mouth.
“Oh, it totally is.” You said, talking in a way where he could tell that you were smiling.
You both laughed as you grabbed a strainer out of the pantry. Draining the pasta, you both settled into a comfortable silence.
“Well, I’m glad you can joke about it.” Bucky said, watching as you poured pasta sauce into the pot to warm it up before chucking the rest of the pasta in.
“Some days are better than others. I’m just happy that I can stop running. Still, I do get a bit paranoid sometimes. I feel like I’m going to turn a corner and he’ll be right there.” You said, rubbing your arms as if you were comforting yourself. At that moment, Bucky looked at you and noticed for the first time how truly tired you looked. Dark circles underneath a sleep deprived gaze. Eyes clouded by worry and paranoia. Bucky’s seen that look on himself before. Before Steve found him in Bucharest, before he could trust his own mind. When he had to avoid being recognized, avoid being found, avoid falling back into Hydra’s grasp.
You exhaled as you uncrossed your arms, mixing the pot before sprinkling cheese on top. “Dinner’s all done.” Bucky sat peacefully, enjoying the aroma of the tomato and basil. Taking a deep breath, he slowly exhaled before speaking up again.
“Well. I’m here now.”
“Hmm?” You called back, not quite hearing him over the clanking of the bowls you took out.
“I’m here now,” he repeated, this time with more confidence. “So… you don’t have to worry about it. If you ever get worried about it, just call me. Or text me… Or knock on the door… and I’ll talk to you or I’ll check it out, keep an eye on the house from the apartment, or just be in the house with you. It’s not a bother, if it’ll give you peace of mind. I’ve been through something… similar. With, uh, the whole Hydra… thing…” Bucky trailed off as you stared at him with a neutral face. He was getting ready to backpedal, hand reaching for the back of his neck out of nervous habit, until you spoke.
“You’d do that?” You said, face unchanged, eyes searching his.
“Yeah… Yeah, I would.”
You blinked a few times before looking aside and trying to clear the frog from your throat.
“I don’t even know what to say but thank you. That is such a big relief.” You said, voice wavering slightly, one hand coming up to touch your forehead out of relief. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Nobody should have to go through that alone.” Bucky said softly.
You touched his hand softly, giving it a gentle squeeze before stealing your own back. You turned around to grab a drink when you paused, looking out the window.
“It stopped raining.” You stated, watching as the little bit of sunlight brightened the colors of the changing leaves. Bucky, on the other hand, was watching how the little bit of sunlight brightened you. He rubbed his thumb against where your hand had just been, trying to recreate the feeling of your hand on his.

Valentine’s Day Head Canons for 25 BNHA Valentines
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I wanted to give back to you guys with a few V-day head canons for some of the best BNHA characters. Hope you all enjoy and have a good rest of your day!
Pairings: Various x reader Warnings: A little suggestive towards the end but nothing smutty or anything
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Midoriya
He’s very traditional. He shows up to class with a box of chocolates and a small teddy bear for you.
As for your date, the two of you will make dinner at the dorms later at night and watch a movie in the common room.
Your friends will probably all try to join your movie night, but you get them to leave eventually once you remind them that today is Valentine’s Day and that this is your date.
Bakugo
The two of you don’t do anything big in front of your friends. You talk between classes and eat lunch together (along with the rest of the Bakusquad) as usual, but everyone was a little concerned when no grand gestures were made by either one of you.
But when you got back to the dorms, you both made excuses to get out of whatever activity your friends were doing, and raced upstairs to Bakugo’s room.
The two of you had this planned out for weeks. Act natural during school like it was any other day, and go to Bakugo’s room for a private dinner, cuddling, and massages later in the evening.
Todoroki
He shows up to class with a bouquet of roses and a small card is tucked between two of the flowers.
That night, he takes you out to a very fancy restaurant for dinner. If you don’t have any fancy clothes, Momo will make you some.
At the end of the night you kiss under the digits of Endeavor’s credit card (lol sorry I had to xD)
Iida
Such a gentleman. He doesn’t let you do anything all day.
You wake up to breakfast in bed, cooked by him of course, and he takes you out to dinner after class.
If you try to do anything for him, he pushes your efforts aside and says “no need to do anything for me. This is your day,” as if it’s a day solely dedicated to you. He did accept the chocolates you bought him though.
Kirishima
During class he wishes you a happy Valentine’s Day and kisses you on the forehead, but that’s all during the day.
In the evening he knocks on your door only for you to open in and see that he’s wearing a full blown tuxedo and has flowers for you.
After you change into something nicer than the pajamas you were wearing, he drives you to what you think will be a fancy restaurant, only Kirishima goes to the McDonalds drive through.
You sit in his car and eat burgers and McFlurries in an empty parking lot while wearing fancy attire. Best Valentine's Day in my opinion.
Kaminari
He tries. He tries so hard but everything he does ends up failing. I feel like the world is just against Kaminari.
He bought you chocolate but accidently left them out and Kirishima and Mina ate them. He buys you roses a week in advance just to make sure he is prepared, but they wilt before he can even give them to you.
You end up making him breakfast so he feels better about it. It’s the thought that counts, right?
Sero
If you are someone who smokes the good kush, he waits until after class to give you your present, and I think we all know why.
He takes you upstairs to his dorm after class and he gives you a heart shaped box of chocolates, only half of the chocolates have been eaten and replaced with different strains of weed.
If you don’t smoke, have no fear! He still provides with roses, chocolate and a night full of movies, video games, and lots of cuddles and smooches.
Shinsou
He gives you a valentine card of a cat holding out a heart that says “I love mew.”
He’s super embarrassed as he gives it to you, doing that thing where he scratches the back of his head as a way of reconciling with the situation he has gotten himself into.
The two of you go to a noodle shop after class to celebrate. When Shinsou walks you back home afterwards, he gives you a kiss on the top of your head and calls you his valentine when saying good night.
Mina
She goes all out with the color pink. She has not only made you the biggest bright pink valentine, but she decorated the entire common room in little pink paper hearts.
She gives you your valentine along with a huge stuffed teddy bear that is holding a heart that says “I love you”.
The two of you spend the night eating chocolates wrapped in pink foil while watching cheesy rom coms.
Tsuyu
She gives you a cute little valentine and a chocolate frog
It’s a little awkward because you also bought her a chocolate frog…
The two of you spend the night watching movies and eating your frogs together. It’s wholesome and cutsie.
Uraraka
She’s embarrassed because she can’t afford to get you anything fancy like chocolates or a nice card.
She does make you a card, though, using red, pink, and white construction paper. She looks really embarrassed giving it to you, but homemade gifts are so much better anyways.
You guys eat ramen and watch Netflix together while cuddling. I’d say that’s a pretty good date.
Momo
She spoils you to death with the fanciest gifts, chocolates, and dinner.
She takes you out to a fancy restaurant and if you don’t have anything nice enough to wear she will buy you a properly fitted garment appropriate to the restaurant you will attend.
When you show up to class wearing a diamond encrusted wrist watch and designer clothing, everyone will know that you had a happy Valentines Day.
Jiro
She writes you a love song for Valentines Day.
With encouragement from Momo and Denki, she plays it for you in front of the whole class and accompanies it with your favorite chocolate and candies.
She looks very embarrassed. She’s scared that it isn’t good or that you won’t like it, but she has nothing to be worried about. Her song is beautiful and it’s been your favorite Valentines Day present ever!
Mirio
Mirio loves tacky valentines with horrible puns.
He’ll sneak them to you throughout the day, taping them to your locker or sneaking them inside the vents, passing them to you during or in between classes, taping them to the door to your dorm room. He loves the look on your face reading the stupid puns.
He makes you a nice dinner after class and you spend the night in.
Nejire
Nejire is a fan of all things cute (which is why she’s dating you xP).
You got each other matching teddy bears by accident, but that just shows how cute the two of you are.
You make heart shaped dumplings together and watch romcoms until the wee hours of the morning.
Tamaki
He gives you a card and chocolate during class, and he’s blushing the entire time.
When you give him a kiss on the cheek his face turns beet red and he’s not sure if it will ever turn to the original color again.
After classes, you encourage him to go to a concert with you as a fun way to spend the night out. Tamaki is wary to go, of course, but all in all he’s glad the two of you mixed up your night a little and got some time out of the dorms.
Aizawa
You spend the morning having lazy cuddle time in bed. Lots of lazy kisses, lazy cat naps, and eating breakfast in bed because you are too lazy to get up (breakfast is cereal straight out of the box that you keep by your bedside. Fight me).
During classes when you are supposed to be teaching, you and Aizawa will text each other constantly about how much you miss one another and can’t wait for your plans for that night.
Your plans are a simple dinner date at a restaurant. Aizawa also picks up a bouquet of flowers for you and a bottle of chardonnay for the two of you to enjoy later.
Present Mic
You make heart shaped pancakes with each other in the morning.
Yamada has plans to stay late at the radio station playing love songs, so you’re a little downtrodden when he tells you you can’t have a Valentine’s dinner with one another.
But when you get home at night and turn on the radio, you can’t help but smile, as the song that he plays is your favorite love song. You stay up late and listen to the show. He plays that song for you about ten times. Everyone thinks he just forgets that he’s already played it, but you know that the entire time he was playing it for you.
All Might
Valentines Day with All Might is difficult because the world now knows about his regular form.
You guys keep getting mobbed by his lovesick fans who all want a piece of him.
Toshinori can tell that it’s getting on your nerves and makes you very, very uncomfortable. So he makes it up to you that night with a homemade dinner, glass of wine, and lots of massages and cuddles.
Midnight
The morning starts out with her not wanting to get out of bed, so you tempt her with a homemade breakfast.
You divvy up the day evenly. You make her breakfast in the morning and she cooks dinner.
When the dishes have been taken care of, Nemuri has a very special surprise for you waiting in the bedroom. Have fun you two!
Hawks
As with All Might, Hawks gets bombarded by his fans constantly. He, however, is willing to flirt back with them. He likes seeing you get jealous as he calls his other fans his little birds, because that’s the nickname he calls you.
He makes it up to you by buying you a lot of expensive gifts, flowers, and chocolates.
But gifts don’t always make up for everything. That night, he treats you so well with kisses, massages, and lots of other sexy things.
Shigaraki
He doesn’t really see the point in Valentines Day.
So he was very surprised when you put a bar of chocolate in front of him, wish him a happy V-day, and kiss him on the cheek.
He’s never celebrated Valentine’s Day with anyone before, so don’t be surprised when he reciprocates that same thing you do, but with a half drunk bottle of whiskey. Babe is trying his best.
Dabi
Like the other villains, Dabi can’t take you out or do anything special with you because he has to keep a low profile.
So you spend the night in together. You play poker and drink together like any other night, but there’s something about the aura of the room that makes it feel so special.
The night ends with a drunken hookup, but this time Dabi actually wanted to cuddle after. Looks like the Valentine’s Day spirit is growing on him after all.
Toga
Knife wife doesn’t need a holiday to tell you you’re cute and shower you with love and affection.
Granted, her ways of showing love and affection are a little off, but she gives you a sack of candy she’s robbed from a convenience store.
When you give her a new knife with a sharp blade and her name etched into the side of the wooden handle, she is speechless. She waves it around in everyone’s faces and brags about how she has a better s/o than anyone in the world.
Twice
Twice’s Valentine’s present is making you a clone of yourself to clean your apartment.
He’s a little wary of doing it at first, but your reaction at seeing him make your double and it getting to work doing your dirty dishes was worth it.
While your double is hard at work, the two of you order takeout and watch movies together or the couch.

Like a Heart Needs a Beat, chapter 1.
Hello, everyone. This is part one of two of an Abby x Lacie story. The first chapter is pretty much just going to be pure fluff, and next chapter the ink-related angst will kick in.
This story, and the next two two-part shipping stories I write, will be “canon” to my version of events.
---
It wouldn’t have been the first time that Bertrum had dragged Lacie to one of the parties he hosted, but that didn’t mean that she had to like it. She got it, she really did- Bertrum thought she deserved to experience the finer things in life (some of which, to be fair, Lacie did enjoy), and didn’t get that no amount of exposure would make her enjoy this. Still, as she was now, forced into a suit once owned by Bertrum’s son and listening to Bertrum trade compliments that were really insults (or whatever they were. They had a strange way of communicating with each other that Lacie didn’t think she wanted to understand) with his client while dozens of men were flirting with each others’ trophy wives in the background, she felt out of place and a little irritated at Bertrum for insisting she come. It was as Joey and Bertrum were getting especially petty that Lacie just had to look away, and across the room, Lacie saw a woman who looked twice as miserable as she was and only slightly more in-her-element.
Lacie approached her. It was a pretty girl, despite looking like she was completely done with this party. She was wearing a grey suit, clearly tailored for her, and had short, curly hair, dark eyes, clear, dark skin. Her body was pretty nice, too. Yeah, Lacie was going to do this.
“Hey,” Lacie said, “You look like you could use some air. Want me to show you a place where we can get away from the party for a while?”
The woman slowly turned her head to look at her. “Sure. Why not?” she replied without changing expression. Lacie would have to hope that would change and that the woman wasn’t just a natural sourpuss.
Lacie smiled. “Come with me.”
Bertrum was a nice man. He allowed Lacie to step out of parties when she needed to, and even gave her one heck of a place to go when she did: Bertrum’s bird room.
Bertrum loved birds. Bertrum raised birds. It was his favourite hobby. The bird room contained two cages of small, pet-store birds, a larger cage for his doves, and a number of nests for his other birds- three chickens, two ducks, a goose, a swan, and (out of place as they looked amongst the farm fowl) two peafowl. It was easy to keep so many pets when you could pay people to look after them. The bird room opened up to an outdoor enclosure, but this time of day they were all in their nests.
“Pretty cool, right?” Lacie said. “Wanna feed em’? I’m the host’s plus-one. Don’t worry, he won’t mind.”
The woman seemed pretty impressed. “Sure,” she replied.
Lacie showed her to the plastic barrel of dried corn in the corner. The birds crowded them, eager, which made them laugh.
After they’d spent a while feeding the birds, the woman had cheered up significantly, and so Lacie tried to make conversation.
“So. My name’s Lacie. And you know why I’m here. What’s your name, and why are you here? And why don't you want to be here? Because it's obvious you don't.”
The woman rolled her eyes. “Abby Lambert. Nice to meet you, Lacie. I’m here because Joey Drew begged me to be his plus one so he wouldn’t have to come alone. And... instead of telling people that I was his friend or his coworker, or lying and telling people I was his girlfriend, he made up this lie that I’d won a contest to get to go with him. That I was his biggest fan. I’ll be honest- that pissed me off. He didn’t think it was right for his image, I guess."
“Oof, that sucks. You know, I’m just one of Bertrum’s engineers, and I don’t know an eighth of the high society stuff he does, but he would still never do that.”
“Thanks. And thanks for taking me out for some air.”
“No problem.”
It was a few more minutes of feeding birds before Lacie decided to throw her shot. “If Joey wants to be a jerk he can stay here on his own. Wanna get out of here?”
Abby looked Lacie up and down, and suddenly Lacie wished she were wearing something a little more revealing than this ill-fitting suit- especially since Abby’s was accentuating every curve of her body. But Abby clearly liked what she saw.
“Yeah. Yeah, that would be nice.”
The two took a cab to Abby’s apartment, where they spent the night.
---
After the one-night stand, Abby had left Lacie her number. If one night was good, why not make it several? And then, Lacie had surprised her by asking her out. To an art museum.
“You like art, right? It’s not just a job? I mean, I wouldn’t want you taking me to a construction site.”
God, she was a dork. A muscular, handsome dork. Abby had to roll her eyes at herself for being so caught up on a woman, but she eventually broke down and asked Joey a few pointed questions during their lunch break a few days before the date. “So, Mr. Romantic- can you give me some tips about how to sweep a woman off her feet? I’m meeting someone tonight.”
Joey had smiled teasingly at her. “Oh, my. The ever-serious Abby Lambert is lovestruck!”
“You’re gross. It was good sex. That’s all.”
“Right. That’s why you came to me for advice. Well, I’d say just be natural. Be friendly, make jokes, find common interests, all that common-sense stuff. And then at the end of the night invite her over for some wine and radio, read her signs, and that’s when you start getting physical.” Joey suddenly went from smiling and talking with his hands to being much more serious. “Oh, and... I’m sorry about the other night. You know how it is... I respect you, the art department respects you, but I can’t trust random people to do so, and I can’t avoid interacting with people who won’t.”
He didn’t even have to say that it was because she was a black woman. It was the same reason why Joey had promoted someone else ahead of her as head of the art department- he hadn’t trusted that the others would accept her authority. But, after she’d handled the art department while her ex-superior was on vacation and there hadn’t been any problems, Joey had snatched the promotion right out of his hands and put it in Abby’s. Not fair to the ex-head of the art department, but Joey rarely was. Even if he wasn’t perfect, though, he was still one of the few in this day and age who would hand a high position to her under any circumstance, and one of the few she could discuss her relationships with.
“Maybe we should just not talk about that. See you soon, Joey.” Why think about that when Abby had more cheerful things to think about?
---
When Lacie showed up to the art museum, she was wearing a leather jacket, scuffed jeans, and heavy boots. She’d definitely stand out in a dainty place like this.
“So, do you know anything about art?” Abby asked as they went to the first section, which featured a number of surrealist paintings.
“Not a thing!” Lacie admitted, not at all ashamed. “Are you the type who likes to teach, or the type who just wants me to shut up and enjoy it on the level I’m at?”
“I... guess I wouldn’t mind explaining some things.”
“Okay. So, this one,” Lacie gestured at a painting of half-melted clocks hanging off of tree branches and the like. “It must represent something real deep, right?”
“Well, there’s more to art than symbolism, and surrealist stuff doesn’t have to have a deeper meaning. But... maybe it means that time just melts away when you’re having fun.”
It was midnight before Abby was back in her apartment. The museum had closed before they’d felt like any time had passed, and so they’d gone for a walk together in the city and stopped at whatever shops caught their eyes. It had been fun.
Abby’s apartment was the apartment of a chronically single woman in her thirties who had made it. It was clean and organized, but not too clean and organized. It had a large window overlooking the city in the living room, and near it, an eisel had been set up, with a half-done painting on it of a sunset over a city skyline. There was a rack of oft-used wine glasses in the kitchen, lesser-used exercise equipment in the laundry room. Abby’s bedroom contained her collection of houseplants, two floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a closet full of suits her mom had tailored for her at a reduced cost.
Joey had always said that he never wanted to get married because he didn’t want to share space with anyone else. Abby had rolled her eyes and punched his arm for that. Joey was always coming up with reasons why he didn’t want a relationship, and none of them were true. Abby, on the other hand, had just assumed and accepted that it just wouldn’t happen. The chances were against it unless she made it a priority in her life, and she was focused on career and art. Could it really happen with this hooligan? It was hard to imagine letting her into this apartment- this apartment of a woman who had made it- on a permanent basis. But, maybe. Only time would tell.
---
Things went from there. They continued to date for over a year. Abby taught Lacie how to draw, and Lacie taught Abby how to fight. They started spending more nights than not over at each other’s places. Joey still didn’t know about it, because Abby knew how jealous Joey got when it came to relationships. Shawn on the other hand definitely knew, and teased the hell out of Lacie for it and later came to Lacie for help with his own relationship once he got into one.
Christmas that year, Shawn had scrapped together enough funds to visit Ireland. This was a problem, because Shawn and Lacie usually spent their Christmases together. As per usual, Lacie didn’t have the means to visit her home state of Alpaccia, so it looked like it would be a lonely Christmas for her.
“You want to come visit my family?” Abby offered as Lacie had been complaining about it.
“Yeah. I’d love that,” Lacie admitted. She hadn’t had a Christmas with a real family in... well, a long time, at any rate.
Abby’s family consisted of her mother and her two-years older brother, who had brought a wife and two kids. The father had died in the war while Abby was a child. They had a traditional Christmas together- old Christmas records, decorating a tree, staying up late to play cards and chat once Abby’s niece and nephew were in bed until they could barely keep their eyes open, and then watching the kids open their presents in the morning.
It kind of hurt Lacie to see such a beautiful family, but it was nice, too. It hurt because she remembered having to go off to her friends’ houses when her parents were too high to remember to feed her. She remembered having to make her own doctor’s appointments at the age of nine, and running off to live with her big sister at fourteen. But it was still nice to be there, just because it was.
As they were packing up in the guest bedroom, Lacie started crying, and Abby took notice. She’d never seen her cry before.
“What’s wrong?
“Nothing,” she said, and thankfully Abby had left her alone about it.
It was a week later, after Lacie had had some time to think, that she made her offer. “Abby, I want to start a family with you. I know we can’t get married in the traditional sense, but we can get a place together, find some man to give us a kid, and stay together for the rest of our lives. I could even buy you a ring if you want. Do you wanna do this?”
Abby was awestruck. “Lacie... oh my God, yes. Let’s do it.”

please, tell us more about your steampunk au! it sounds really cool!
well generally speaking, most of my imaginings of steampunk aus tend to be focused on the aesthetic of it rather than the plot/setting, because i think it’s quite interesting. think victorian-era but with more gears. so the changes made in this au would be very similar to an au in which gone is set in the victorian era… but with more gears. however i did have a few thoughts about what could be part of it:
as i’m not an expert on the history of the victorian era, i’m not going to go into too much detail about it. that being said, it’s likely that the class divide between the perdido beach kids and the coates kids would be much greater, and would probably fuel the rivalry between sam and caine even before they discover that they’re brothers.
as there’s no electricity (most stuff would be steam-powered) the whole plot involving the power plant wouldn’t work, so instead it could be threatening to blow up the supply of chemicals used in gas lamps (and said chemicals feed the gaiaphage). in addition, the fact that sam could create light with no power source required would be a much greater deal.
one thing common in a lot of steampunk aus is automatons. as there isn’t any wifi or tv or radio signal to be cut off by the fayz, instead it could be that the more complex automation in the town simply breaks or fails to function anymore. it’s unlikely that any of the kids would be smart enough to rebuild them to the same degree and would probably only manage a simple, crude copy of what was once there.
you know that one character in steampunk novels who is the genius inventor who knows the ins and outs of the technology the world is based around? that’s computer jack. he probably wouldn’t have the ‘computer’ in his name though (unless he, like, tried to build a simple computer out of pistons or something).
having fantasy/alien elements in steampunk isn’t uncommon, so instead of the gaiaphage crashing on a meteor, it could have been in some kind of clockwork or steam-powered spaceship. the end of the mineshaft (likely a defunct coal mine) would be covered in scrap metal parts and possibly even have still-barely-functioning parts of the engine releasing hot steam (creating more danger for those that enter).
following on from the previous idea: drake’s whip arm isn’t organic. instead, the gaiaphage created what looks like a metal, riveted snake which it then forced lana to fuse to his stump. works just the same as in canon, but with some added details: the edges where the metal parts had been joined together are sharp, and even without that the metal would be able to cause much more damage and be harder to break. it would probably be heavier though. also it sounds like the treads on a tank when it moves.
following on from that idea: there could be more body modifications in this au. perhaps not as drastic as replacing entire limbs but adding metal plates and stuff, or just extra features that could make things easier. could even be part of how mutants control their powers.
guns are still a thing, but they mostly rely on gunpowder. there could also be bombs and cannons, though there probably won’t be too many of them around. vehicle-wise, i don’t have a lot of thoughts other than the helicopter on the island is some fancy flying machine or even just a hot air balloon. and maybe the highway is a train track instead. i don’t really know.
that’s honestly all i got for now. if i think of any more then i’ll add on to this. also i’d love to hear other people’s ideas if they have any!

Could you do an 'I didn't know I was pregnant prompt' where somehow Abby, who's a doctor and won't ever live it down, doesn't realize that she's pregnant until she's in labor. Possibly with it being conveniently when she's alone bar delinquents, and someone has to go track down Kane and inform him of what's going on.
Canon-divergent from early s3 ish. Also featuring Raven being awesome and Clarke trying not to have a breakdown, so hopefully I wrote those two darlings okay. Content warning for vague / non-graphic and questionably medically accurate descriptions of childbirth. PG13ish for that and also swear words. Also on ao3.
The thing about quiet is it doesn’t last. She should’ve knownbetter.
It’s been a year, maybe a little more than that. Time flowsdifferently here, but one of the kids – and Abby knows they are not that anymore, most of them are so much more capable than her, but in her mind they are stillso small – is pretty sure they saw a snowflake yesterday. So, bit more than ayear. And about a year since she broke down and let herself be reckless and…
All of this hits her in the worst way as she realizes whather body is doing. This pain is not cramps, but she can’t blame herself forgetting confused, it’s been a while since she’s had her normal cycle and-
Yeah. This is what she gets for ignoring her own body aswell as she does. Dammit.
The worst part is, Abby thinks as she paces across herworkspace because so help her she is not letting this nor anything else stopher, she justified everything. Her last implant had expired shortly after shewas widowed, and she’d passed on getting another one because she was on theedge of forty and had zero plans to ever let anyone else touch her and she didn’twant to waste resources like that, and she’d just… forgotten about that detaila year and a half later when she’d gone and taken a new lover anyways. With orwithout the implant, her cycles were always erratic and she stopped trying topredict that ages ago. Nausea got justified when she wasn’t the only person whoate bad meat (turns out mutant might’ve-descended-from-a-raccoon needs to be cookedlonger than that attempt was); a little weight gain because she iseating more, because that’s a possibility now. Said weight pooling in herabdomen is normal enough for a woman her age, right?
She justified everything, she was wrong, and now she is-
Fuck.
Okay, so right now pants are a mistake. They’re soakedthrough anyways, and somehow the idea of someone wandering in and seeing hernaked from the hips down is one of the less embarrassing details of this wholedisaster. Normal people have seven or eight months to process imminent parenthoodbefore it comes. She won’t even have that many hours. Supposedly births getquicker the more a person has had, and given her track record there…
Another wave of pain hits and she grabs the edge of the tablefor support. At least she’s having this crisis – she is trying to use everyword for it but what it is, and she will go through the guilt spiral later – inmedical. Ideal place for this nightmare. If she has to give birth on herown, as is looking more and more likely, at least she is doing so in a safeplace. That’s about the only thing going right here.
There is, after all, the small issue of her partner havingno damn clue about any of this.
Last she checked – and she tries not to hover, she is notthat kind of woman and their more recent trust in each other has eliminatedsome of her tendencies – Marcus is out on a hunting / scavenging daytrip. Whichmeans he may or may not be back before this is over. Either way, explaining howshe managed to be oblivious for close to nine months about something so significantis not going to be a good time and she is more than a little nervous about thatand-
Abby hears the door open behind her. Great. Now thenightmare is complete.
“Are you…” Raven, thank goodness, at least the intruder issomeone who occasionally has common sense. “Screw that, you’re not okay.”
“How willing are you to believe things right now?” Abbyasks, turning her head to look at her friend. Group bonding across generationsis rough, but she sees a different kind of potential in the younger woman thanmost people do. Like this one, if she doesn’t accidentally kill herself beforeshe turns thirty, has some serious untapped leadership potential. And moreimportantly right now, Raven is extremely well-connected and has a highertolerance for crazy than most people. So, again, ideal person.
“From you, pretty cooperative,” Raven shrugs. “What happenedslash who do I need to electrocute?”
“I somehow managed to ignore being pregnant and… it’scoming.” And saying it out loud sounds even more damning than realizing it herselfhalf an hour ago, dragging another person into this mess with her and puttingthat weight on someone who doesn’t need it. “Feel free to judge me.”
“Nah. Not sure what you need me to do but…”
“Get someone. Anyone. Nothing against you as a person but Ido not trust you to-“
Another contraction hits before Abby can sufficientlyexplain why she’d rather not have someone who interacts with technology betterthan people as her backup here. Great. If she factors in the number of timesthis has happened that she really did think were cramps, and how long it’s beensince closing her legs felt like a good idea… shit. Yeah no. There will be noexplaining this to her partner before it’s too late.
“What I’m hearing is radio your idiot and tell him to gethis ass back here as soon as humanly possible but do not tell him whybecause that’ll break him, grab the first person I can find who I’d trust tocatch something and send them in here to help you, and go through the storageroom and hope there’s still baby clothes in that one box I found some in lastmonth. Anything I’m missing?”
If Abby were more mobile, and/or felt less like her body wasabout to explode, she would hug Raven right now. “Yes. I… yes. Thank you.”
“And try to keep this on a need-to-know basis. Far as anyoneelse is concerned, you figured out you were incubating at a normal enough timebut you decided to keep quiet about it because you hate attention. That work?”
“I’m not sure that’s going to be believable when-“
“It’s believable if you’re a couple weeks before your duedate and you can pass that particular dramatic shitshow off as being more aboutthe timing.”
“I’m not sure if you’re an angel or an evil genius.”
“I’d like to think I’m both,” Raven laughs. “Now, if youthink you have enough time here for me to do that, I’m gonna go.”
Abby assesses herself quickly. Unless something somehow goeseven more wrong, she’s got at least half an hour here. “I’ll be alright.”
And again she is alone, she thinks as the door closes behindher. This is… not an absolute worst-case scenario, but pretty damn close. At best, she’s got a lot of explaining to do when it’s all over. At worst…
Describing this as an accident is a serious understatement. Therehas been no conversation about whether or not to have kids together. It neverseemed necessary. They’re older enough that the risk seemed so low, and therearen’t restrictions on that here, and she didn’t think…
She didn’t think. That’s what this all comes down to. A temporaryvacation from her normal instincts and look what that got her. No time tomentally prepare for a tiny vulnerable creature, no time to think about theimplications for her relationship, no time to even find out if her partnerwants this enough to stick around for it, no time to-
Getting closer. She is not attempting to measure herself butshe can feel the process. Timing-wise, she probably is a few weeks earlyhere, in that comfortable space where that won’t mean any problems for thelittle creature and a normal person’s biggest concern would be not being quitedone with their preparations. Whereas she has done no preparations, whatlittle of her fate isn’t in her own hands right now has been entrusted to atwenty-one-year-old who has even less of a baseline for this, and-
It’s all too much, and Abby starts crying. Most confusedemotional release she’s ever had, not sure if it’s stress or fear or pain oranticipation or probably all of those at once. Overload enough that the nextcontraction feels muted by comparison, overload enough to overlook how uncomfortablethis all is.
It’s just a little ironic that this started bent over atable and it may well end that way too, at the rate she’s going. That’ll be funny,in a couple months when any of this can be, maybe.
She hears the door open again and this time multiplefootsteps, this time she is too exhausted to even turn her head, this time-
“Mom? What the hell?”
Limited options, Abby reminds herself. Limited options ofpeople she would trust to be her backup here, and her own – possibly soon to beolder? – daughter is one of them.
“Clarke, I can-“
“Raven filled me in,” Clarke mutters, sounding so familiarlydisapproving. Abby’s always thought her daughter takes much more after her latehusband, but sometimes there are familiar flickers in there. “You basicallyneed me to catch it.”
“Basically, yes. There should be some towels in-“
“I know where things are. Learned my organization systemfrom you.”
“And I can grab stuff,” Raven adds. That would be the secondset of feet, the bright-red jacket Abby can see in her peripheral vision. “Iwould rather not see the nightmare fuel here but I can hold things or whatever.”
“Any luck with-“
Abby swears she can somehow hear Raven roll her eyes. “Wrongperson picked up, but we tried. The group at least knows something is goingdown here and hopefully I yelled enough to-“
The next pain is strong enough to blur Abby’s vision. “Nextone is it.” She’s amazed she can even talk clearly right now, but her presenceis not going away just because she’s in a crisis. She’s gotten through worse. Rarelybeen on this end of it, rarely felt so helpless, but she will not let anythingstop her. “Be ready.”
Around her, the girls attempt as much prep as they can. Abbydoes not know what they’re doing, does not think about it. There is only this. Thereis her, and the little creature that is about to exit her body, and her olderchild who is surprisingly calm about all of this, and another member of theirfamily who is at least trying to do the same, and a black hole where herpartner should be and-
She screams.
She lets it be a blur. She does not want to remember thesefew moments.
She knows one of the girls is hovering under her with alarge towel in hand, and the other one is yelling, and she doesn’t know whichis which and she doesn’t care. She knows that this is at least a familiar pain, and the first part is the worst, and the little creature – now officially hersecond child, she will let herself process that later – is slick andcooperative and how the child of two such stubborn people is so easy to dealwith in its first moments she does not know but-
“I have a little sister,” Clarke says somewhere in thebackground.
Abby wants to collapse. Wants to sleep for a very long time. She focuses on her body, on all the things she knows. There is still pain, waitingfor the afterbirth to come out. She suspects she’s torn but not as badly as itcould’ve been, and her breasts ache and at some point soon that too will beuseful, and-
She fades out. Exhaustion is a wonderful thing. She knowsher body will do what it needs to, and she trusts the girls enough, and… shecan’t do this anymore.
When she wakes up, she’s somehow been moved to the cot –which means someone else has seen her questionable condition, great, just whatshe doesn’t need – and she’s in a clean shirt and someone has placed cold clothbetween her legs to help the hurting and-
“You really didn’t know?”
She’s not awake enough for this shit.
Abby turns her head and yep, there is her partner (but howmuch longer can she call him that, she wonders) in a chair someone must’vebrought in, looking at her like he does not know where to start but he has alot of questions. It’s been a while since she’s had to interpret that look, andshe is concerned.
“I didn’t know,” she repeats. “You’ve known me since we werechildren, you know I can justify anything, I thought-“
“Alright.” And now for the scary-calm. That particularversion has evolved over the past year and a half or so, as Marcus has learned howto be more of a person, but she still knows it too well. He’s harder to readthis way, and more dangerous to those around him. “When I found out… I thought…”
“Do you really think I would’ve hidden this from you if I’dknown?”
“I had to ask.”
“I wouldn’t… I just went through hell,” she hisses. “Involuntarily.Again. And I wouldn’t have had to if I’d paid more attention to myself but youknow I don’t-“
“I believe you.”
She’s not sure she believes him right now, but she isstill too exhausted to move so that fight can wait a day or two. “Where is…” Shedoesn’t know the right word. My daughter? Ours? Which of those will hold longer?
“Raven’s looking after her. You needed to rest, and… I canlook after you here, Raven can keep the baby in her workshop except when sheneeds to feed.”
Abby rolls her eyes. Yeah, keep a newborn in the mostdangerous place in the settlement, great idea. On the other hand, Raven’sspace is at least warm. “And you’re…”
“Still processing,” Marcus finishes. “Someone tried to radious but we were a few miles out, and when we got back I didn’t have time tothink before someone shoved what looked like a bundle of towels in my arms and…”
“It is yours. If that was going to be your next question.”
“It wasn’t. But good to know.”
“I just… I ignored everything, and I…”
He reaches out for her hand, and even that feels like toomuch physical contact right now but it’s a nice gesture anyways. “I’m notblaming you.”
“Well that’s new,” she mutters. He’s been decent for a year, she should have more faith, but… “Are you going to stay?”
And now for the look of stunned horror, the wide eyes and haltedbreaths and for a moment she’s broken him. “Am I… how is that a question?!”
“You are aware how many bad choices I’ve made here…”
“You’ve always been a little impulsive,” he counters. “And stubborn. And usually right. And I don’t know why you think this kind of innocent mistakewould push me away.”
“It’s a screaming liability of a mistake?”
“It’s ours. And I want… if you want…”
“Yeah. You’ve never done this before. You do not realize thehell you’ve just volunteered for.”
“I’m with you. How bad could it be.”
He leans down and kisses her forehead, and the scratch ofhis beard is way too much, and… yeah. They’ll be okay.

So since the last time I posted one of these the entire world has changed dramatically and hopefully 4 hours of music will tide you over in quarantine for a bit longer. Strangely I’ve been busier than ever, and what started as a personal challenge to listen to a new album every day in February turned into me listening to 116 new albums in March and 124 in April. I’ve got a stacked google doc full of star ratings and dates now and it’s really been a lot of fun, I highly recommend trying it yourself. This is my March playlist, because I accidentally took a month off, and I’m thinking of either switching these playlists to weekly to make them a little more digestible or just dropping them whenever. Who knows. Let me know what you think and drop album recommendations in the comments please.

On A Slow Boat To China - Bing Crosby & Peggy Lee: Ok first off it’s amazing this song isn’t more racist. I don't remember now how or why I came across this. I think I was just thinking about crooners and how as a genre it's now existed in common popularity as a nostalgic idyll of a mytholigised past far longer than it was ever actually popular which is interesting. The origin of this song, according to wikipedia, is also one of the most 40s ideas I've ever read: "I'd like to get you on a slow boat to China" was a well-known phrase among poker players, referring to a person who lost steadily and handsomely. The idea being that a "slow boat to China" was the longest trip one could imagine. Loesser moved the phrase to a more romantic setting, yet it eventually entered general parlance to mean anything that takes an extremely long time".
Fight Night - Migos: I saw that Offset had some new show on Quibi the extremely fake sounding streaming service and I thought "how did Migos get so world conqueringly large that they get to make 10 minute shows nobody will watch for a $2 billion venture capital funded app that will never make any money?" They seem to have this massive reputation without having much to back it up. The last thing I remember everyone talking about was how Culure II was two hours long in order to game streaming numbers and was simply not good. They seemed to have sort of settled into making background music for scrolling instagram. But then I remembered Fight Night and I thought: "oh wait, that's right, Migos are fucking great". Where their other big hits like Bad And Boujee and Walk It Talk It have this sort of laid back vibe where they've comfortably nailed the formula and relax onto it, Fight Night commands your attention. StackboyTwan killed the beat - it has this propulsive momentum where it feels like it's constantly ramping up, moving up from the sidesick and bassline in the verse, up to the claps on the beat, and the big gang chants on the offbeat once the full instrumentation kicks in - then it just goes around and around and around with the constant bassline the whole tim. It's a perfect all-rise production because it never actually explodes, it's all building tension held down by an unchanging bassline.
Do It Puritan! - El Hombre Trajeado & Sue Tompkins: I am extremely delighted to announce that Sue Tompkins of one of my all time favourite single album bands Life Without Buildings has broken a nearly 20 year musical hiatus to appear on this song by El Hombre Trajeado. It is so nice to hear how her voice has changed and her approach has stayed the same. Her style is so unique and so good and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.
5 8 6 - New Order: Before 'the incident' I had tickets to see New Order at the end of March and so I embarked on a big listen through of their discography, which has now unfortunately made it feel even worse that live music is cancelled indefinitely.
Oom Sha La La - Haley Heynderickx: First of all I love songs where they talking about how they're writing a song halfway through. And I love songs that seem like a pretty normal singer songwriter indie thing where someone just starts screaming near the end. I love this song. A great staring at the wall and absolutely losing your mind because you haven't done anything with your whole life anthem.
Elektrobank - The Chemical Brothers: Can you believe I've never listening to a full Chemical Brothers album before this month? Can you believe big beat ever went our of style? It feels insane that we ever swapped this sort of energy for the beige algorithm of EDM. I think there's a real triumph in this album, and in this track especially of replicating the live feeling in studio. Giving it this much space to grow and change and get very hairy near the end is amazing, it feels like it was just recorded live.
My Mind's A Ship (That's Going Down) - Katie Pruitt: It feels very rare to me that this sort of extremely smooth Nashville prduction actually makes a song better. It has a habit of strangling the life out of a song and making it blend into a boring paste of soundalikes, but with Katie Pruitt it works amazingly. Her songwriting is so distinct and clear and her voice, especially near the end where it punches hole in the sky, is so strong and so her own that it doesn't need anything else.
Water - Ohmme: "What if Tegan And Sara were a noise band instead?" is a question I didn't know I needed an answer to. I love any band that has the guts to write songs like this that sound like pop from an alternate history, so off kilter and odd and noisy but with this undeniable pop heart that the duo vocals make sound like schoolyard clapping chants remixed by Lightning Bolt.
Lions, Tigers and Bears - SLIFT: A friend put me on to Slift and described them as French King Gizz and really, I'm inclined to agree. This is the traditional long last song at the end of their new album, and as usual I am advocating that every song should be the long last song at the end of the album. I love this style of jam where everyone else goes to space but the rhythm section just digs in and works hard as fuck for ten minutes. Then the whole last 3 minutes of the song are just fat drone riffs. This song's got everything.
The Pines - 070 Shake: This 070 Shake album is unbeleivably good and it warms my heart to see the dark energy of The Pines live on through another century in yet another permutation. I have more to say about it later in the Jackson C Frank version coming up but it feels like this 070 Shake album kind of came and went but I implore you to listen, it’s an aoty contender for sure.
Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On - Funkadelic: If you can stop thinking about the intro, which I certainly can’t (Hey lady won’t you be my dog and I’ll be your tree and you can pee on me.) there is so much goodness in this song. For a while now I’ve been thinking about how, for lack of a better word, ‘positive’ music is consistently underrated in the critical canon. Dance music, disco and funk especially are derided as empty sugar music, while every cookie cutter metal band absolutely demands to be taken seriously. In dance music this manifests as genres like tech house sucking all the fun and individuality out of music until it’s just an endless parade of producers working to a schematic of the barest essentials. It feels like you can’t have fun and be taken seriously at the same time, which feels like an obvious contradiction but shouldn’t be!
Spoils - Dry Cleaning: Dry Cleaning are my Lock Of The Month Band To Watch In The Future Because They’re Gonna Go Off. They have such a great sound and I’m desperate for an album because I just need more. This song absolutely knocked me down when I first heard it. I love any band where it sounds like the singer has just wandered in while the rest of them were rehearsing. There’s a very good talking-songs movement happening in the UK right now between these guys, Do Nothing and Fontaines D.C and i’m excited to see where it progresses. I might put together a playlist a little later to show you what I mean.
As - Stevie Wonder: I finally listened to Songs In The Key Of Life this month, which is an experience I would recommend to everyone. This shit goes for 21 songs over 105 minutes and absolute bangs the whole way. The original release of this album was a double LP plus a 7", which is yet another reason I am grateful for streaming that I don't have to buy a damn box set to hear this thing.
Sleep Now In The Fire - Rage Against The Machine: I am working on a very niche playlist called Songs Where The Guitar Amp Accidentally Picks Up A Nearby Radio Station For A Couple Of Seconds and it's only 3 songs so far. A Man A Plan A Canal Panama by The Fall Of Troy, Melody 4 by Tera Melos and Sleep Now In The Fire by Rage Against The Machine. In every single one of those songs it feels like a critical component even though it's just an accident that's been left in because it sounds good. Here it's the perfect ending as the rage dies down and the commercial world fades back in. Anyway, my other question about this song is about the great Michael Moore directed video where they famously shut down Wall Street for an afternoon. There's a shot of a guy for a second holding a sign that says Donald Trump For President in 1999. Which is odd but not out of the question, he's been famous for a long time and there's always been freaks. My question is why the fuck did he have that sign that day? Was he amongst the Rage Against The Machine Fans that showed up? A counter protestor? Was he, perhaps most chillingly of all, just walking idly around Wall Street with his Donald Trump For President sign like usual and stumbled upon this whole hoo-haa accidentally?
Applause (Purity Ring Remix) - Lady Gaga: Did you fucking know that Purity Ring did a remix of Applause? If there’s something I’d love to know more about and it’s Purity Ring’s forays into pop production. After their first album they did some production for rappers like Danny Brown in the great track 25 Bucks, which is a good fit really - their sound is witch house with the tempo pushed back up, witch house of course just being chopped and screwed reinvented by tumblr users. So it’s a natural fit to take that new perspective back into the world of hip hop. They also did this fantastic remix of Applause after their first album. Then, after their second album they produced 3 songs for Katy Perry’s Witness album, and one Katy Perry song for a Final Fantasy mobile game soundtrack (?) and feel like the long silence and delay between their second and third albums is because of more behind the scenes pop production work - but if that’s true, where is it? Is it, as I suspect, part of my own personal Pepe Silvia, Katy Perry’s scrapped 2019 album that has vanished into thin air? Or is it part of Chromatica? I think Purity Ring have solidified an interesting place in pop, paving the way for Billie Eilish and Kim Petras’ dark anti-pop and so i’m excited to see where they go after this new album now that they’re the architects of the new wave.
React/Revolt - Drahla: The smartest thing you can do is add a saxophone to your band. The whole first half of this song could go for 20 minutes of growling screaming saxophone post-punk and I wouldn't mind. Then when the second half of the song kicks in it's fantastic in the way this whole Drahla album is: it's tight and sprawling post-punk at the same time with a complicated structure that seems to just pile onto itself instead of ever circling back.
And I Was Like - Porridge Radio: I'm seemingly having a real thing this month for songs that open with a bizzare acapella chant. Between this and the Funkadelic one it's a genre I'm very interested in hearing more of. Isaac Newton was a virgin and it's important to recognise that. The thing I love about this song is how it's in 3 distinc sections: Isaac Newton was a virgin, she's a birthday girl in a birthday world, and mum no please it's grunge, and they all feel like the concentrated energy of a 14 year old's thoughts. She sounds like she's almost crying when she sings 'she's a birthday girl in a birthday world'. The concentrated confusing teenaged energy of this song is just overwhelming.
Dirty Mattresses - Mama's Broke: So much of contemporary 'traditional folk' either exists as pure nostalgia music or as music that's trying too hard to be 'authentic' and evoke a mythology of a bygone time, but Mama's Broke manage to make it feel new and modern but honest and  authentic at the same time. The super close harmonies and modern approach remind me of House And Land who I also love, but the songwriting is in another class entirely.
Building A House - CHOPCHOP: I don't know if you've ever seen Bad Boy Bubby but CHOPCHOP feels a little like the band that he ends up joining at the end. A musical ensemble built to enable the will of a very strange man. I think the band is from the UK and I'm not sure where the singer is from, but he has this incredible deeply accented voice that brings such a gravity to everything he sings in the way that anyone speaking english as a second language accidentally brings new weight to common turns of phrase.
Universal Soldier - Jay Electronica: It feels fitting, looking back, that Jay Electronica finally released his album right before the world ended. It was literally now or never. Some how Jay-Z is the breakout star of this album for me. He's got some of his best verses in years on here and he's a great opposition to Electronica's flow when they trade verses. I would also, as an aside, like to know the origin of the kids cheering sample throughout this, because it's the same one from AM//Radio by Earl Sweatshirt and Wish You Were Gay by Billie Eilish. So what's that about.
Sticky Hulks - Thee Oh Sees: I've been very slowly getting into Oh Sees and I love them a lot so far. Their unweildy, huge discography spread across a lot of variations of the same name makes digging into them very rewarding as well. There's a great line on their wiki detailing all the times they've changed their name that goes: Orinoka Crash Suite (1997–2003), OCS (2003–2005, 2017), Orange County Sound (2005), The Ohsees (2006), The Oh Sees (2006–2008), Thee Oh Sees (2008–2017), Oh Sees (2017–2019) Osees (2019) to give you some idea of what we're working with here. Basically it's just everything you could want from a pychedelic band like this: a history and discography as shaggy as the songs themselves.
Knife On The Platter - BODEGA: In reading about Bodega I learned that they don't have a drummer in the traditional sense. They have someone credited as a 'stand up percussionist', and in listening back I realised that's they key to the groove in their music. He's not playing a kit he's just slamming at a tom and a snare on a rack, while one of the singers plays hi-hat here and there. So all the drumming has this barebones caveman feel to it and I absolutely love it. The band feels a lot like The Fashion, and that whole mid-2000s dance-punk movement that I've been desparate to come back so naturally I love it a lot.
Against Gravity - Horse Lords: Horse Lords are one of the most incredible bands I've heard in a long time. Somewhere between a more analogue Battles and Laddio Bolocko, they make a kind of churning math-jazz that sounds like huge intersecting squares of rhythm slowly overlapping. It feels like there's an infinite depth in these songs, you can listen and focus on a single instrument and see it shifting in and out of place with everyone else, before you lose it again and it retreats back into the swirling mass.
Plain To See Plainsman - Colter Wall: I've been listening to this Colter Wall album a lot, and it's really beginning to rank among my all time favourites. I grew up around the flattest place in the southern hemisphere, so I love the plains and it's very nice to have a cowboy song I can relate to like that.
The Nail - Sarah Shook & The Disarmers: Sarah Shook has so much character in her voice I completely love it. She is also a fantastic songwriter that manages to make outlaw country punk that sounds authentic and doesn't have the rockabilly posturing that a lot of the genre suffers from.
Inner Reaches 慾望的暗角二 - Gong Gong Gong 工工工: The best thing about Gong Gong Gong is you can listen to this whole song before you realise they don't have a drummer. They're a guitar and bass duo that play and sing with such a layered rhythmic intensity between the two of them that they really don't need one. A drummer would just clutter the space already taken up by their ferocious rhythm.
Country Pie - Bob Dylan: I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan's dumb songs. He has a lot where if it's the first song you ever heard from him you would be mad at whoever told you he was the greatest songwriter to ever live for trying to trick you like this. What I especially love about this song is how abruptly it ends, like dad just came home and everyone panicked cause they're know they're not supposed to be staying up that late.
You Did It Yourself - Arthur Russell: It seems hard to believe that I've only just found out about Arthur Russel. He seems to be a mainstay of Music Guy lists and somehow I've only heard of him this month. I've been obsessing over the Iowa Dream album, which is a compilation of a lot of different (mostly extremely high quality) demos from the late 70s to mid 80s and what really shines through other than the singular strength of his songwriting is how readily and easily he bends from country style folk to romantic piano ballads, to groovy post-punk like this. What I love so much about this song is it's a great lesson in songwriting: sometimes a song can just be a vague review of a middling movie and still have emotional resonance. Incredible. There's a great NPR article about Arthur Russel and the process of assembling half-takes and demos into complete recordings that you should read if you're interested. https://www.npr.org/2019/11/20/779721417/which-arthur-russell-are-we-getting-on-iowa-dream
The Dogs Outside Are Barking - Arthur Russell: I love this song because it's such a perfect distillation of a teenaged moment: trying to find a moment alone with someone when you have no freedom at all to create one. The song cycles through potential situations but leaves the problem unresolved, existing in the moment of nervous romantic tension preceding an unasked question and it's just beautiful.
Men For Miles - Ought: I love the vocal melody in the verse here so much. Spiking up unnaturally at the end of the lines like a nervous and strange version of The Strokes. Even the way he cramps his words in in the chorus is so good, switching registers randomly like he's impersonating someone else.
Mister Soweto - Lizzy Mercier Descloux: https://pitchfork.com/features/from-the-pitchfork-review/9828-lizzy-mercier-descloux-behind-the-muse/ Pitchfork has a great article about Lizzy Mercier Descloux detailing how she is continually undervalued and underappreciated. I found her though my Discover Weekly and became immediately obsessed with this album - a perfect mix of off-kilter 80s bass and brass that is so colourful and seems to move in a million directions at once like the songs can't even catch up with themselves sometimes. I'm excited to dig into her discography more and try to understand her more because she has a truly unique approach that I can't get enough of.
Sweden - Marilyn Crispell: I've been looking for a while for other pianists of Cecil Taylor's calibre, rare type that it is and I am so glad to have finally found out about Marilyn Crispell. She plays free jazz like Taylor, but in much less percussive and disonnant style. There's a New York Times quote that seems to follow her that says "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz." and it's really very apt. She will move with seemingly no warning at all from mediative, colourful stokes to a mad descent unto uncertainty and beyond, then back again without a moments hesitation. Her music moves like a dream, linking a stream of unlinked images with an ease that only seems incongruous on reflection.
Twins - Gem Club: I have loved this song for a very long time and I come back to it over and over and appreciate it anew. What I appreciate about on listening to it this time is the strangeness of it's structure, following up the verse with an instrumental break, and then a long instrumental intro to the chorus gives it so much space to spread out and breathe, giving the beautiful gravity of the song even more weight. Then after the chorus it moves straight to a bridge and then the intro and first verse again. It's a fantastic song that makes it's small parts so large, where another songwriter or another producer would pare them down.
Grand Central - Paul Cauthen: Something I've learned in listening to a lot of cowboy music is that the number one thing that cowboys hate and fear is getting hanged. They hate it worse than cats hate getting sprayed with water. I found out about Paul Cauthen combing through Colter Wall's similar artists looking for more of this brand of new old fashioned country and I really found it here. Paul Cauthen comes from four generations of preachers and left the church to pursue country music instead, which feels like an extremely old fashioned position to be in here in 2020 but I guess lots of people in Texas still live like that, and thank god they do or we wouldn't have Paul Cauthen's big mournful Elvis voice to sing us songs about the railway.
Serafina - BAMBARA: I love this sort of spoken word leather jacket rock and roll. It's so extremely Cool in an old fashioned way. Like a more rock and roll version of Enablers.
So 4 Real - The Hecks: I love love love this song that sounds like a sped up Prince demo. The strange thinness of the mix and the way the vocals are buried just makes it sound so strange and great, like it was put together on some ancient 4 track recorder that can't handle the pure energy of the song.
In The Pines (Version 2) - Jackson C. Frank: There's a very good 3 hour compilation of Jackson C. Frank recordings that came out a few years called Remastered And Unreleased that I listened through the other day. It's just magnificent. This version of In The Pines is one of my favourite I've ever heard, the mournful vocals coupled with his churning rhythm guitar really brings out the darkness of it in a way I've never heard.
(Tumble) In The Wind (Version 1) - Jackson C. Frank: Another favourite from this compilation that is slightly hard to listen to. I don't know if there's a date on it but I'd guess this was recorded near the end of his life. It is so beautiful, but you can hear in his voice and breathing that he's unwell. In Horseshoe Crabs by Hopalong she sings a story from his perspective this song really seems to fit in the second half of that. "Woke from the dream and I was old / Staring at the ass crack of dawn / Walked these streets up and down / Looking for Paul Simon / All I found was myself, lost in time / I tried singing my songs / But I lost my mind"
Sludge - Squid: I'm thinking of putting together a playlist of all the great Black Midi-adjacent bands I've found out about recently and Squid is at the top of the list. This new breed of art-punk is so fantastic and goes in a million different directions. I'm just so excited it exists.
Straight Shot - Quelle Chris: I love this song and Guns is a phenomenal album but there’s one thing bothering me. The ‘who are you, what are you’ part at the end sounds so incredibly familiar to me and I can’t figure out why. As far as I can tell it’s not a sample, but googling reveals that the english voice on it is fucking James Acaster the standup comedian. So what’s going on? Quelle Chris himself is less than helpful: “Straight Shot is one of those ideas that reached out to me, we got along and I simply showed it around town. The chorus, poem at the end and basic piano progression literally came to me in two separate dreams”. Who knows. Great song though.
Levitation - Dua Lipa: What I really like about this song is that she says sugarboo. This whole album bangs and Dua is really reaping the benefits of being the only pop star with the guts to release an album while everyone’s in lockdown I also have a half-baked theory about the way this song is almost interpolating Blame It On The Boogie in the ‘moonlight, starlight’ part as a sort of aggressive takeover of Michael Jackson’s cancelled legacy. Which is smart really. The same way Taylor Swift is re-recording her albums, let’s just get The Weeknd in the studio for a couple of days and give the world back it’s bangers.
Another Crashed Car - Nine Inch Nails: I am so glad Trent Reznor put out another two volumes of Ghosts. Ghosts I-IV from 2008 seems to have been the bridge from his Nine Inch Nails work to his film score work, and now that he’s had such success with that it’s nice to hear him writing in this style without telling anyone else’s story again. It’s also interesting for him to go back to this project now that Ghosts I-IV has paid dividends in the form of the sample at the centre of Old Town Road but that’s neither here nor there. It’s hard to pick and individual track from these, because they work so effectively as long form albums and not individual tracks, but I chose this one because I put the album on as background ambient while I was doing some boring data entry at work and this track is the point at which I realised I was going out of my mind with stress from doing the simplest tasks because of Trent’s Damned Chords.
Lilacs - Waxahatchee: This is a perfect song. It makes me want to like, draw charts about it and go through it bar by bar to figure out how she did it. It’s perfectly put together. It feels like she uses every trick in the book and it just comes together flawlessly in 3 minutes. Amazing.
Cool Water - Hank Williams: I decided to properly listen to Hank Williams because his shadow stretches over so much of country music, and while a lot of his music really alienated or bored me, and a lot of his songs feel like they would read as novelty songs today (like Hey Good Looking), this is the song that made me understand why he’s so revered.
In My Bones (feat. Kimbra and Tank And The Bangas) - Jacob Collier: Jacob Collier generally irks me. He makes brain music for redditors that lose their mind when someone shows them chord inversions or odd time signatures. Youtubers whose whole personality is ‘y’all heard Giant Steps?’ But he killed it on this song. It’s great despite him. There’s still a lot of corniness to work through, mostly in the big yuck funky lyrics, but structurally it’s a kaleidoscope and a big chunk of its success I’m putting down to Kimbra and Tank who understand that performance is a bigger part of a song than composition in a way Collier maybe doesn’t yet. He can overload the bassline and stop-start the rhythms as much as he likes but without actual personalities driving it it’ll just sound like a Peter Gabriel midi played at 200%.
Earthquake - Graham Central Station: I learned something wonderful in researching this band. The leader, Larry Graham, who was in Sly And The Family Stone is credited with inventing slap bass. He himself refers to the technique as "thumpin' and pluckin' ".
Quand Les Larmes D’un Ange Font Danser La Neige - Melody’s Echo Chamber: Once again furious that I’ve known of Melody’s Echo Chamber for years but never listened to them until now. I have been missing out. This is a perfect sprawling psychedelic jam punctuated with a bizzare cut-up recording about shitting yourself when you die and being declared brain dead in the vatican. It’s got everything. I had to look up who the drummer was on this song because he’s just nailing it, and it turns out it’s Johan Holmegaard from Dungen which is really a perfect fit.
Murder Most Foul - Bob Dylan: I was thinking the other day about how Bob Dylan is doing in quarantine. The man who hasn’t stopped moving his whole life and who’s been on a never ending tour  since the 70s is now, I assume, just pacing a hole in a hotel carpet somewhere and jabbering to himself. The strangest part of Bob dropping this 17 minute song about JFK out of nowhere is that he hasn’t put out any original music since 2012. So a gigantic song like this is an even bigger surprise. I, already a huge fan of gigantic songs and Bob Dylan, unsurprisingly love it. I love the slow stirring of the instrumentation, like he hired Dirty Three as a backing band and I love that nearly the entire second half is just listing good songs that he knows. It’s a remarkable song and unlike anything i’ve heard before from Dylan or anyone else. It’s interesting to hear Bob Dylan step into being the great chronicler of the 60s like he’s been told he already was his entire life almost 50 years later, finally accepting the fate foisted on him. The other thing I love about this song is the line when he for some reason praises Lee Harvey Oswald’s shooting “Greatest magic trick ever under the sun / Perfectly executed, skillfully done”

Note
how technologically advance is piltover?
//It's... complicated.
That seems to have changed over the last couple of years, because when described in lore and in some art as pretty much Victorian-era England through tesla/decopunk aesthetic. Meaning while they have access to more fantasy and advance technology here and there, they are not really futuristic and in some parts they are lacking behind modern tech.
The exception for this rule tended to be the champions that were more advanced than the city, similar to how Garen or Darius might be the best of the region, Piltoverians and Zaunites had access to cool toys the regular people didn't have. Like say, Vi might have a power suit, but it was a pretty rare thing and people weren't walking around in them.
HOWEVER
That seems to have changed over the last couple of years, because more and more just sounds like a futuristic city with more advanced things that even we have. Things that only champions used to have have become more common, not normal I'd say, but the champions aren't the only source of high tech.
For example, things we know Piltoverians and Zaunites that are not champions have for certain are:
Power suits:
Tumblr media
Enhanced humans:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vehicles on water, air and land:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Automatons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A LITERAL FUCKING T-REX MECH I AM NOT KIDDING THIS IS CANON LIKE WHAT THE FUCK:
Tumblr media
So yeah, Piltover is a futuristic city. They most likely have TVs, radios and phones for all we know, and I wouldn't be shocked.

Some Furu Updates~!
A few highlights from the episode of Furukawa’s radio, Ashita wa SUNDAY 08/08/20.
Kuromyu
Tumblr media
Q: Looking back at your Kuromyu era, what do you think of it now?
Furukawa: “I succeeded Mr. Matsushita as the second generation, but I had the honour of playing only Sebastian according to the canon story arcs. The world really is both full of pop elements as well as thoroughly dark. There were fields in which I have grown, such as my singing range, but likewise other skills I seem to have lost. Growth is indeed not limited to a linear trajectory.”
 Mitarai Kiyotaro
Tumblr media
Q: In a March episode of Ashita wa SUNDAY you accidentally used the ending particle ‘kashira’**, do you slip up more often? (TLN: ‘kashira’ is a hyper feminine question particle, one often used by Grell as well).
Furukawa: “Ah, it seems that [Mitarai] teacher’s speaking style permeated into my common vocabulary. I wonder when this particle will pop up again (kashira) (laughs)? No honestly, I am striving for a normalcy wherein men like me can use particles like ‘kashira’ without it inviting ridicule or surprise. But indeed, roles do often rub off on me; had I played a Yankee character I might have grunted everything instead.”
Click here for more about the transgender character Mitarai Kiyotaro.
Bonus: In the talk show of Asaichi, Furukawa shared that he and his managers were given the opportunity to have an interview with real transgender women. They visited a queer bar in Shinjuku where they met transgender hostesses who kindly offered Furukawa the chance to “ask away”. Furukawa said that he originally had many questions in mind, but once they met he suddenly started to doubt said questions. Instead they all decided to just get to know each other first, and before Furukawa even realised, they had already ended up at the karaoke.
Furukawa: “I normally don’t go to karaokes, but that time we just enjoyed each other’s company so much we didn’t do any of the “ask away” interview originally planned. Instead they just taught me some details about their body language, the most beautiful way of pouring tea. They were very elegant women; nothing about them was performative, everything was just so beautiful and natural, I was in awe. For my performance as Mitarai I hope I did their teachings justice. There was this scene wherein Mitarai discloses her trauma to the protagonist Yuichi and pours tea for him. Their advice about pouring tea really came in handy. Also, I learned from those women that the most important thing to them is trust; they would always try to judge whether somebody is worthy of their trust before ever speaking up about something personal. Normally Mitarai is very energetic and extravagant, but when she disclosed her story to Yuichi I opted for a much calmer approach, because that scene is very important. Mitarai is an incredibly positive person, but part of it is also because she chose to show people that side of her. I hope it would show the audience that her usual extravaganza is like an armour. Yuichi has proven himself to be trustworthy to her, and that’s why she was able to shed her armour.”
Shoe agony
Tumblr media
Furukawa: “I once read in a manga that it’s best to wear good shoes! So sometimes I’d go buy actually good shoes (I recently bought a pair of sandals from a good brand), but they just inevitably chafe or just don’t fit well... I just always put on some anti-chafing salve, but that’s just not a sustainable method. For now I just settle with adjusting the size here and there, attempting to get the shoes to a somewhat acceptable softness and wear them. Honestly, can I start a petition to make walking machines obligatory in shoe stores? I want machines that allow the customer to try the shoes out for one hour on different surfaces (laughs). I don’t think anyone would want to buy shoes that were already worn for an hour by someone else, but maybe they could just provide sample shoes? Being able to buy a pair of shoes with the same confidence as buying a t-shirt should be a right!” (Mood, Furukawa, MOOD.)
Merciless puberty
Tumblr media
Q: Mr. Furukawa, my son’s voice is changing and his voice is really all over the place. What was your experience? Isn’t it very bad for the throat to do all types of vocal stretches like singing?
Furukawa: “Oh, mine happened in an instant. I was basically mid-sentence and it dropped, that was it. Urm... my senpai Yamazaki Ikusaburo did say that when his voice was changing the process was rather merciless though.”
