Oh noooo I've made another slightly unhinged teenage girllllllll
Anyway quick doodle of Iris Madarame, who is like Goro except if instead of going sunk-cost on a dramatic murder plan, he had to sit their while Shido publicly paraded around the kid he was so nice for adopting, then admits his crimes but doesn't talk about Goro or his mom, then fucking dies of being old.
So you, know, completely chill about everything
#oc tag#iris madarame#I wrote her one time but that was third semester so#her in the canon timeline would be less chill#iris: god madarame sucks#yusuke: I agree with you please stop trying to kill me

Birthday Girl
On your 21st birthday, your friends drag you to a bar to get wasted when you decide it's a good idea to drunk-call Professor Agatha Harkness.
Word count: 3400+
Warnings: smut, fingering, oral, intoxication, mentions of underage drinking, teacher x student (legal)
“One, two, three!” Wanda chants and you and your friends tap your shot glasses on the bar counter and quickly down them.
You gasp at the burn and they laugh at you. It’s your 21st birthday and your best friends Wanda, Rio, and Natasha had dragged you out to the closest bar to get you wasted. They had all already turned 21 the year before; you were the baby in the group.
“Fuck, that’s disgusting,” you groan.
“Another round, please!” Rio motions to the bartender. He sets down four more tequila shots and one is shoved into your hand.
“Think you can get to 21?” Wanda jokes and the thought of 20 more shots makes you want to gag.
“I might puke after this one,” you say and your friends laugh. You were never a partier in high school or college, always preferring to curl up on the couch and watch a movie. You’d only had some sips of alcohol a few times, but you had never been drunk.
“You deserve this!” Nat shouts in your ear. “Harkness has been working you to the bone!”
You shrug and wave your hand dismissively, suddenly uncomfortable. Agatha Harkness is your History of Witchcraft professor at Westview University. She’s known around campus for being cold to everyone and rarely giving out A’s. She expected nothing short of excellence and would not put up with excuses. Everyone was terrified of her.
Everyone except for you.
Something about the older woman captivated you. You were obsessed with meeting her standards, dreaming of the day she would look at you with pride. You poured over your books for her class, rereading every sentence you wrote thrice, just to try to impress her. It had taken your friends days of begging to convince you to come celebrate your birthday with them because you had a paper for Agatha’s class due in a week and you were already worried about it.
“I don’t know how you’re surviving,” Wanda says. “I had her last semester and got a C in the class. Third highest grade. She’s the worst.”
“She’s not that bad,” you defend, not quite sure why. Something about Agatha getting so much hate for pushing her students rubs you the wrong way.
“Yeah she is,” Rio joins in. “I heard that she’s a real witch.”
You roll your eyes. “Can we please stop talking about her? I thought you guys brought me here to get away from school.” You take the shot that’s still in your hand and it goes down smoother this time.
“Yes, there we go!” Rio whoops.
Two more shots later and your head has gone completely fuzzy. You feel as if you are floating on air and everything around you is happening in slow motion. You get off your stool and immediately stumble, Wanda catching you with her arms.
“I think I’m a little drunk,” you tell her. She laughs like it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard.
“No shit, y/n, you don’t have to yell!”
You didn’t even realize you had. “We should probably go back to the dorms!” You look around to see Nat chatting with some girl and Rio throwing darts at the board in the corner.
“Not yet,” Wanda says, picking up her rum and coke. You’re not sure how she’s still drinking after she also did four tequila shots. “I’ll get you some water.” She signals to the bartender and you squeeze your eyes shut, willing your vision to go back to normal.
When you open them, you see dark hair in the corner. Is that–? You shift so you can get a better look and feel sorely disappointed when you realize the person is not Agatha. Why are you disappointed? The thought echoes in your head for a second, and then is replaced by a sudden urge to see your professor.
“Drink this,” Wanda orders, pressing a glass of ice water into your hand, but you’re too busy scrolling through your phone. You know she put her number on the syllabus somewhere and you are too far gone to think that this might be a bad idea.
You feel a thrill run through you when you find it. You read the number over and over, like you’re afraid it’s going to change somehow.
“I’ll be back,” you slur to Wanda and then step out the side door into the alley. You type the number into your phone and your finger hesitates over the call button. You know you shouldn’t. But fuck it. You press the button and lift the phone to your ear.
It rings. And then rings again. You’re about to hang up to spare yourself the rejection when the call connects.
“Hello?” It’s actually her.
Your breath catches in your throat and you stand up straighter. “Professor Harkness?”
“Y/n? Is that you?”
“Yeah.” Shit, this was a bad idea. Even with your head still swimming, you know that. You can’t just hang up though.
“Why are you calling me at 10:30 on a Saturday night?”
“Um,” you say, trying to think of something. You’re definitely going to have to drop her class after this. You’ll never be able to face her ever again. “It’s my birthday?” You offer lamely.
Agatha scoffs. “Happy birthday. Can I help you with something?”
“Oh, no, Professor, I just wanted – we’re at a bar – I thought you were – and just wanted to say hi,” you ramble, knowing you’re not making any sense, and you can almost hear her smirk through the phone.
“Y/n, are you drunk right now?” Her voice perks up and it sounds like she’s finally interested.
“No!” you protest. “Well, maybe a little. But I’m 21 now!”
“What bar are you at?”
“Jimmy’s.” It’s a local dive bar that is a popular place for Westview students to hang out at.
“I’ll be there in ten. Wait out front.” There’s a click and then she’s gone. You stare at your phone, dumbfounded. Is Agatha coming to pick you up? Why?
You walk back into the bar and order a Dirty Shirley. The call had sobered you up a bit and if you had already drunk-called your professor, why not get even more hammered. Wanda comes back over to you and giggles when she sees the new drink in your hand.
“Alright, time to party!” she exclaims. You pick up on the fact that she’s a little drunk as well. You stand up, vision blurring for a second.
“I actually called an uber,” you lie, even through your hazy mind knowing that your professor coming to pick you up might sound strange to them.
Wanda pouts and then throws her arms around you. “Happy birthday,” she says into your ear and your arms tighten around her.
“Thank you,” you breathe back. You’re close with Rio and Nat as well, but they don’t have the same bond you and Wanda do. You pull back and then go say goodbye to your other friends.
The wind outside does very little to sober you up and you shiver from the coldness. You’re wearing a purple crop-top and a black mini-skirt, something Nat had found buried deep in your closet. You watch the time on your phone, heartbeat picking up as it gets closer to ten minutes since Agatha had hung up on you.
And then right on the dot, a slick black Range Rover pulls into the parking lot, and you immediately know it’s her. The car stops right in front of you, the passenger window rolling down, and your breath catches.
It’s Professor Harkness, clad in a maroon suit, wavy hair falling over her shoulders.
“Do you need me to open the door for you, too, princess?” Agatha says, sarcasm dripping over the words, when you haven’t moved. You shake your head, partly to answer and partly to clear the fog. You settle into the seat, not missing the way Agatha’s eyes rake over your skimpily clothed body.
“You didn’t have to come get me,” you mutter, putting real effort into not slurring your words.
She glances at you and sees you struggling with your seatbelt. She reaches over and you freeze at her close proximity. Her breath is hot against your cheek and her fingers brush your stomach as she takes the seat belt from your hand and buckles it for you. “Thought I would spare the other people you drunk-called,” she says.
Embarrassment runs through you. “You were the only one,” you say meekly, picking at a scab on your hand. You dare to peek at her, only to find her smirking, one eyebrow quirked.
“Oh?”
“I shouldn’t have called.” This time, it’s harder to keep your words from running together. “We were talking about you and then I thought I saw you and I just wanted to see you.” You need to stop talking, now.
Agatha hums. “Did you, now?” She tucks a piece of hair behind her ears as she shifts the car into drive and you watch her fingers.
“You’re really hot,” you blurt out and then clamp a hand over your mouth. Fuck.
Instead of pulling over and making you get out, like you thought she would, Agatha simply reaches over and pats your leg. “And you’re really drunk, sweetheart.”
The pet name makes you swoon inwardly. “Not that drunk,” you say unconvincingly. “I only had one…two…” You trail off, attempting to count the number of drinks on your fingers. Agatha stifles a chuckle.
“Is this your first time drinking?” She asks, amused.
“No, but it is my first time drinking this much,” you admit. “My friends dragged me out since it’s my birthday. I was going to work on the essay for your class.”
“You were going to spend your 21st birthday doing school work?”
“Your essay’s due in a week. I wanted to make sure I-it was good enough for you.”
She notices your slip of tongue and her smirk sends heat down low in your stomach. “You’re always good for me. Your essays are some of the best I’ve ever read.”
Your heart skips a beat and your face flushes. “I have a B in your class.”
“You have an 88 in my class. That’s the highest I’ve had in years. Can’t make it too easy,” she says with a wink.
“You could make it just a little easier,” you grumble, the alcohol clearly getting rid of any inhibitions.
“You keep doing what you’re doing, sweetheart, and it’ll go up, I promise. I’m very impressed with the work you’ve been turning in.”
A hot flash runs through you. “Just wanna be your good girl.” And if it wasn’t clear how you feel about her now, it sure is. But she doesn’t look disgusted or creeped out, only intrigued.
She finally stops the car and you peer out the window, expecting to see your dorm. You haven’t been paying attention to where she’s been driving at all, and you’re quite surprised to see you’ve arrived at a two-story house in a cute, suburban neighborhood.
“This isn’t where I live,” you say dumbly.
“No, it’s not,” she agrees, getting out of the car and walking over to help you. You stumble up the steps to the front door, Agatha’s tight grip on your shoulder keeping you upright. You can feel her fingers playing with the ends of your hair.
She unlocks the front door just as a wave of nausea hits you. “Oh, god,” you say weakly, holding a hand in front of your mouth. Agatha doesn’t even seem phased; she leads you to a bathroom in the hall and leaves, only to re-enter with a glass of water moments later. You gulp it down and feel better.
“You okay?” she asks softly, stroking your cheek, eyes tracing up and down your face. You’ve never seen this side of her and you really like it.
“I think so. Thank you again,” you murmur and you realize that you’ve been staring at her mouth.
“Anything for my favorite student.”
And then, because you’re apparently determined to fuck everything up even more, you lean in and press your lips to hers. Agatha stands still for a second before you pull back, horrified with yourself.
“Professor, I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to–”
She draws you back in for a longer kiss this time, tongue licking into your mouth. You let out a long moan and she breaks away.
“You’re drunk,” she tells you again.
You clasp the lapels of her blazer. “I know. But I want you.”
She softly pries your fingers off her suit and smiles. “You need to sleep. And then we can talk about this in the morning.”
You pout and she runs her thumb over your bottom lip, slightly pulling it down. You suck her finger into your mouth, delighting in the way her eyes darken. She steps back.
“Let’s go. You can sleep in the guest room. I’ll find you some pajamas and toiletries.” Her hand on the small of your back guides you up the stairs and to the room on the right. The guest room is simple but cozy and you immediately go to the bed and flop onto it. “Don’t fall asleep yet,” Agatha warns and then leaves the room.
She comes back in a few minutes, an old shirt and sweatpants in one hand and a toothbrush and toothpaste in the other. She pats your legs in an effort to get you up but you can barely move, suddenly weighed down by all the drinks.
“Come on, hon,” Agatha says and helps you stand up. You don’t move as she works to take your shirt and skirt off, your cheeks and upper chest flushing red. You try to cover yourself and she smirks.
“M’sorry,” you mumble.
“Don’t be. I’m enjoying the view.” You stare at her longingly, silently begging her to fuck you right there and then, but she helps you step into the sweatpants and pull the shirt over your head. She watches you brush your teeth and moves the covers so you can get into bed. “Do you need anything else?”
Your hand grabs hers. “Just you,” you try again hopefully, but she chuckles and wrenches free of your grip.
“Good night, birthday girl,” she whispers and leans down to press a kiss to your forehead. And then she turns off the lights and leaves the room.
You fall asleep immediately.
***
Sunlight streams through the blinds, waking you up. It takes you a minute to get your bearings and then the events of last night come back to you.
The bar. Four shots of tequila and half a Dirty Shirley. Calling Agatha and her coming to pick you up and taking you to her house. Kissing her in the downstairs bathroom. Shit.
You groan, head pounding. You see a container of Advil and a glass of water on the nightstand beside you. You take two Advil and drain the glass, heart warming at the thought of Agatha taking such good care of you.
And then you remember that your relationship with her will forever be complicated by your actions.
You solemnly brush your teeth and pull back on the clothes you wore to the bar last night, neatly folding Agatha’s pajamas and placing them on the bed. You hope she hasn’t woken up yet so you can sneak out without her having to tell you how inappropriate you behaved last night.
No such luck. The second you get downstairs, Agatha perks up from where she’s typing on her laptop on the couch.
“Good morning, darling,” she purrs, shutting her computer. You gulp, taking her outfit in. She’s wearing a robe that ends mid-thigh and the neckline drops low.
“Hey,” you say casually, trying to hide how much you’re internally freaking out.
“Do you want something for breakfast? I can cook you something.” She stands up and walks to the kitchen and you follow like a lost puppy. You involuntarily lick your lips at the way her hips are swaying.
“What are my options?” Your voice is raspy, still feeling hungover. She glances back at you and her eyes dart up and down your body.
“I can make eggs. Bacon. I think I have pancake mix in the pantry. What would you like?”
You’re a little confused that she hasn’t scolded you yet. And then you remember something else. She kissed you.
You swallow hard. Whatever else you may have done last night that you can’t remember, she doesn’t hate you for it. She might even want you back.
“Are you on the menu?” It comes out before you can even realize what you’re saying.
Agatha freezes and turns around. You shift your weight nervously, but then you see her pupils blown out. Her eyes are so dark you can barely see any blue. “What?” She asks carefully.
“You kissed me last night,” you say, a little breathless. You have absolutely no idea where this confidence is coming from. “You wouldn’t do anything else cause I was drunk. But I’m not drunk now.”
She steps toward you and roughly grasps your hair. She tilts your head back, exposing your neck just a tad. “No, you’re not.” She regards you for a second. “You know you’re not going to get extra credit for trying to sleep with your professor.”
You laugh. “That’s not why I’m doing this.”
She smirks. “Good.” And then she licks a hot stripe up your neck and bites down, sucking a mark on your skin. You gasp loudly and tangle your hands into her hair.
“Professor,” you moan and you drag her into a filthy kiss. She backs you up until your thighs hit the table so she lifts you up onto it. Your legs wrap around her to pull her closer. Agatha pushes up your crop-top and kneads your breast, thumb stroking your nipple, never once breaking your kiss.
Her hand creeps under your skirt and cups your mound over your underwear. Your hips jump on their own at the stimulation.
“Please,” you beg. Her lips curl into a smile.
“What do you want?” Her fingers have pushed your underwear to the side and have started lazily stroking through your folds, spreading your wetness.
“You,” is all you can say before she sinks a finger into your hole.
“Like this?” She asks innocently, thrusting hard.
“Yes,” you pant, quickly untying her robe so you can touch her. She’s completely naked underneath and you lean down so you can take a nipple into your mouth.
“That’s perfect, baby,” she sighs, setting a relentless pace with her fingers after she slips another one in you. “Is this what you hoped would happen when you called me last night?”
“I’ve been hoping for this since the first day of the semester,” you answer, and she falters for a second, thrown off by your honesty.
She pulls out of you and panic runs through you, terrified that you said the wrong thing. But she just pushes you down so your back is resting on the table and she pulls out one of the chairs from the table.
“What are you–” Before you can finish your sentence, she leans forward and sucks your clit into her mouth. Your back arches off the table, hands rushing down to hold her in place. “Fuck, Professor!”
She devours your pussy like she’s a starving woman, pulling all sorts of loud noises from you.
“Oh my god, I’m gonna cum,” you chant, hips grinding on her face, trying to get the last bit of stimulation you need to send you over the edge. She knows what you need and presses her fingers inside you, curling them just right and gives your clit a hard last lick. You cum harder than you ever have before, her name on your lips like a prayer. She helps you ride through the aftershocks and then trails kisses up your body until she can kiss your mouth.
“How was that?” she asks after you pull away to catch your breath.
“That was probably the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten,” you say, which cracks both of you up. “But I’m not finished.”
Her eyebrow quirks up and she smirks. “Oh?” You stand up, putting your hands on her hips and flipping her around so she’s leaning against the table.
You sink to your knees in front of you, not even bothering with a chair. You slowly push her robe up so it bunches at her waist. “Can I return the favor?”
A glint appears in her eye and she fists one of her hands in your hair preemptively. “I’d like nothing more.”

"the public education system is intently evil and all teachers are abusive because it was the worst experience ever for me personally"
guys, look, I'm legitimately sorry that happened to you. that's fucked up. it shouldn't have happened, and it shouldn't be allowed to happen again to you or anyone else. I'm sorry.
public school was hard for me too, at times, and I'm still suffering the consequences for the harsh grading, the arbitrary deadlines, the hours of completely useless-to-me homework. I could name a few teachers who have been pretty fucking terrible. the fact that nobody considered getting me evaluated for ADHD has had an impact on my self image and academic success that I can't erase.
and also.
I grew up in an area where education, in particular, is incredibly progressive-leaning. educators are working really hard to create and try out education philosophies and practices that prioritize kids and their learning, rather than teachers and what they think kids should learn.
My sex ed was comprehensive, and came entirely from school. My gay sixth grade teacher taught me about HIV/AIDs in a useful, accurate way. In high school, I learned about the way orgasms work & I was prepared not to feel shame for normal stuff.
I learned that Communism was not what the USSR actually practiced, and what it really means. I learned about atrocities and, specifically, the genocide of indigenous people committed in/by the US. I learned about the military industrial complex, the school-to-prison pipeline, and I learned about manifestations of racism specific to my local area. I learned about Stonewall, and the intersection of the civil rights movement with gay rights and disability justice.
My creative writing teacher taught us about LSD, and the real reasons we shouldn't do it, after a hilariously ineffective assembly run by some local cops. He spoke gently, carefully, and emphatically about his friends and his own experiences. Later in the semester, he read us a story he wrote about two gay men finding each other in a deeply homophobic environment.
My sci-fi teacher made me feel safe & seen as a kid with "weird" interests. My US History teacher helped me research and put together a 10-page paper on the modern relevance and mission of Feminism. My government teacher made me feel appreciated for the work I put into the class, and the thought I put into what I said in it, even though he disagreed with a lot of it. My sixth grade teacher bought me books to read with his personal money, whichever ones I asked for. My third grade teacher made me feel safe. My science teacher in middle school made me excited for and passionate about science, and saw and nurtured the effort I put into her class.
A lot of stuff sucks, absolutely. But I am seeing new teaching methods being tried out all the time, and I am watching teachers get really excited when I teach their students about the roots of modern graffiti in US black history & to question property laws, and just...
There's hope. there are so many people doing so much work to make things better. so many people agree with you on what education should be, and are trying so fucking hard to put that into action, and so many public schools- not just teachers, but whole schools and even districts- are really doing that work. so much is getting better.
I had more to say, about necessary childcare and trusted adults and outside contacts and time away from abusive family. But like. Please just sit down and listen to more people on this, and please talk to educators and education professionals about what's really going on in this big huge world of philosophy, science, and practice.

Prideful
Synopsis: You never thought that Lee Heeseung, the man who had proven you wrong in the subject you were best at, would be fucking you on the classroom floor, but here you were.
Pairings: Heeseung × fem!reader, sort of enemies hate sex, includes Sunoo from Enha, and Soojin
Warnings: Smut with plot in the beginning, MINORS DNI, fluffy in the beginning, mention of food, degradation, praise, fingering, oral (f receiving), sex on the floor, unprotected sex (not for you bubs), rough sex, overstimulation, swearing, Heeseung calls reader princess and doll, open ending my babies have fun with that
A/N: idea came into my brain and I thought I'd forget about it and just added it to my wip list but then I was like NOPE IMMA WRITE THIS SHIT. So this makes my third smut for Heeseung (idk why I'm writing only smut for him) enjoy it y'all
Jane Austen once wrote an entire fanfic about enemies to lovers, slow burn, and she thought no one would notice. Well almost no one. Nothing ever gets out of the eyes and pens of literature majors does it? Especially not out of hardcore Jane Austen fans like yourself.
You must have analysed that godforsaken piece of literature atleast a thousand times since you recieved it as a gift for your birthday. And every single time, you failed to understand how such a love could be possible. I mean come on, a man and woman who hate each other, falling in love with each other? Either Jane Austen must have been a reincarnation of Aphrodite, or a madwoman who still kept faith in love.
Your heart nearly exploded when your professor had assigned a full fledged essay-presentation, costing half your grade on Pride and Prejudice. "Explore your opinion!" She had called out cheerfully, "Tell me what your heart truly feels about this beautiful piece and I'll give you a full half grade and no assignments for the rest of the semester." The class gasped in excitement at her words as you pretended to be interested. Internally, you were groaning. Wasting half of your night to make a presentation about a book you hold no love for? The universe really was against you. You picked your books up dejectedly and walked towards the entrance, shoulders hunched and music at a higher level of noise than it should have been at.
"Oh shit!" You cursed, dropping your books at the sudden interruption. A flurry of blue wool flooded in your face, as you leaned down quickly to pick up your fallen books and phone. "I'm so sorry." You apologised not looking up at whoever you crashed into. "It's alright." A voice responded back, and you looked up to see him. Lee Heeseung. You had seen him a few times in class, heard him actually. With his pristine glasses, and his woolen sweaters, he was the definition of a movie nerd. He was actually smart, you had to admit, always quick to respond to the questions that you had no idea about. Best in the class after you, according to your professor. Although his choice of literature slightly weirded you out. You often spotted him sprawled out under a tree, holding Pride and Prejudice to his nose, deeply engrossed in taking in each word.
"Is that The Neighborhood you're listening to?" Heeseung asked, as he handed you your phone, which he had picked up before you had the chance to. "Do you have an ear for them?" You asked, taking the phone from him. His hands felt soft, like the first snow when you were eight. Heeseung shook his and chuckled. "I'm more of a Arctic Monkeys person." You smiled awkwardly and shuffled your feet. "To each his own then."
"Macbeth." Heeseung said, before you could escape from the conversation. "I'm sorry?" You questioned, confused at his sudden outburst. "That line's from Macbeth." Heeseung sent another smile your way, pushing his glasses up from his nose, "Polonius says it, 'To each his own'." You felt a pang of jealousy hit your chest. You didn't know where that line was from. Of course, what normal person would know the origin of a common idiom?
"Cool." Your laugh was not without a tint of awkwardness. "Well-" Heeseung shifted his weight from one foot to the other, "Bye then." "Bye." You bid each other goodbye and rushed off in opposite directions, not wanting to be stuck in another neverending loop of conversation.
"Don't tell me you actually talked with The Lee Heeseung." Your roommate Soojin laughed, accidentally smearing some turquoise nail polish onto your thigh. You quickly wiped it off with a tissue before frowning at Soojin. "It's not a big deal." You scoffed, having another slice of pizza, "I mean he's just a guy. Kinda nerdy actually"
Soojin burst out laughing again, this time shutting her nail polish close. She gasped for air as she pulled out her phone and showed you a picture of a what looked like a frat party. "Girl-" she got up from her leaning position, "Nerdy is the worst way to describe Lee Heeseung. I'm telling you-" she picked up the last slice of pizza, "-he's the playboy representative of this college."
"Oh come on." You scoffed again, getting up to go to the bathroom, "Stop joking around." Soojin shrugged her shoulders as you disappeared into the bathroom. "Whatever you say."
The next day, you strolled into your favourite cafe with your laptop, headphones, a copy of Pride and Prejudice, money in your pocket, a sketchbook, and a positive mindset. Always need one to write an essay right? You were thankful that it wasn't raining today like it had been for the past few weeks.
The cafe was mostly empty, with a few medical students drinking coffee to their death, as they always did. You walked up to the counter, where you saw your friend Sunoo, working his shift.
"Y/N hey!" He flashed his bright smile at you, putting down the glass he had been cleaning. "Hey sun." You clapped back, leaning in front of the counter, "The usual please." Sunoo nodded his head and started to prepare your drink. "So I've heard something." He put on his mischievous smile, one that he often wore when he had gossip on his fingers. "Please tell me it's not about that girl from Chem again." You sighed, as he put a coffee cup down in front of you. "No it's about you dumbass." Sunoo scoffed, taking the money you handed him, "I heard you bumped into Lee Heeseung." You let out a groan at his words, and quickly grabbed your drink, going off to sit in the corner. "Yah take your change!" Sunoo shouted after you to which you shouted back, "Keep it! Your broke ass needs it anyway!"
You didn't get the chance to see Sunoo giving you the stink eye, as you plopped down on the comfortable couch and opened up your laptop. You had prepared a few opening lines the night before, since you had learnt that doing half of an assignment on the day of the announcement is better than starting the next day. Whoever wrote that theory needs to clarify it to you, but hey never pass up a good study tip right?
Immersed by the clacking of the keyboard keys and the pretty syllables decorating your page, you were completely absent from the world around you. Until, you heard a familiar voice, which broke you out of your hypoxia.
Heeseung.
What was he doing here?, You thought, not realising that you were basically staring at him. He was dressed in full black today, a leather jacket adorning his broad shoulders. A single earing dangled from his right ear. He still had his glasses on, which were fogged up completely, courtesy to the weather outside. Chatting away sonderly to Sunoo, as Sunoo prepared his drink in a way familiar to you, Heeseung caught your eye. He waved joyfully to you, akin to a child waving to their best friend. You waved back, not aware of the face you were currently making.
"Hey!" Heeseung said, sitting down in the chair next to you, with his drink in hand, "Working up on the Pride and Prejudice thing?" There were atleast a million other seats empty in the cafe. Why did he have to sit next to you? You didn't really realise how handsome he was, until he was sitting face to face with you. The mere sunlight coming in from the windows seemed to illuminate his face well. "Oh yeah I am." You replied, shooting him a smile, "Same thing?" You asked, wanting to keep the conversation going. Heeseung smiled jovially at you and propped his laptop open. "Yep." He replied and glued his eyes to the screen as you went back to your own work. "The Neighborhood again?" He raised an eyebrow, peeking at your open Spotify. You smiled gently and replied, "Arctic Monkeys?" As if ticking a correct answer, Heeseung laughed and showed you his phone where 'Arabella' was playing. A pretty album cover, you thought, subtle and sleek. "To each his own then?" Heeseung said. You nodded and smiled in response, before dropping your head back down to your laptop.
An hour must have passed like this, both of you hypnotised in writing and editing, and downing the refills of coffee Sunoo was providing you with. You stole tiny glances at Heeseung from time to time. Concentration was a good face on him, his eyebrows furrowed, his hands typing away furiously at the keyboard. He didn't talk to you at all, except for the initial hey and hello. But something about the way he spoke to you in the beginning, about the way he asked if you had a pen, and about the way he said 'Hey you have an eyelash on your nose' made your stomach erupt into butterflies.
Heeseung left before you did and before leaving he had extended a hand out to you. "May the best essay win." He spoke, shaking your hand and showing you his smile. God he never stopped smiling did he? His hand was soft, as was his grip on yours. It felt like how your father would hold your hand when you were little on the crosswalk.
"Girl just ask him out." Sunoo called after you as you were about to leave, "The tension between both of you back there was almost poetic." Even though you laughed at Sunoo's quip, and denied the offer, a part of your mind lingered on Sunoo's words and the way Heeseung spoke to you that afternoon.
The days leading upto the hour of the presentation went fast. Too fast almost. Your mind went over your short conversation with Heeseung atleast a million times, sometimes distracting you from typing. You didn't know where all the red bull cans littered across your room came from, but you remember where you threw every single one of them and why. The presentation was perfect. It must have been checked by your eyes atleast a hundred times. Finally, a time was coming when you would be able to express your true feeling about it. Despise and Trouble ran through your veins as you walked up to the board as your professor called on you to present. The class seemed to hold a tight breath to themselves. Everyone knew you, teacher's pet, best at English, known for using the most difficult metaphores in her essays yet having a straightforward point.
"Shall I begin?" You asked your professor who gave a curt nod and leaned back in her chair, an expectant smile plastered on her face. You returned the smile and turned to your classmates, who seemed most interested in your essay.
"Well to begin with, as one does-" humor was always the best way to start off speeches, which was shown by the subtle laughter of the students, "-I would like to say that Pride and Prejudice may be one of the most despised books I have sitting in my bookcase." You heard gasps around the room as everyone started murmerring. Your professor leaned forward in her chair, her mouth pressed tightly to form a thin line. That's good, you thought, a good way to break into their corneas.
"While most people would disagree with me upon this apparent piece of art, I truly believe that this sort of a romance is highly impossible. And no-dont tell me that this is fiction and in the fictious worlds you can quote unquote 'do whatever you want'." The audience held their breaths back as you continued with your rant. Your professor was watching it all with a smile on her face, knowing that she couldn't disagree with you. After all, you had to present your own opinions no matter how opposite they were to everyone else's.
"Well-" you professor stood up from her chair, as you finished your presentation. It had been a 25 minute rant about the book and by now everyone seemed to be meekly looking at their own essays. "That was brilliant Y/N. Truly brilliant." You professor clapped you on the back, "I must say, you have a flair for arguing in a way no one can find counter-attacks. I wonder why you did not choose law as your major?"
"Because there is another argument to be discussed here."
A cold voice rang through the room, as you were about to laugh at the professor's quip. You spun around on your shoes to face the culprit.
Lee Heeseung.
"Heeseung!" Your professor delightfully responded clapping her hands together, "Well why don't you tell us your opinion then? And we'll see if Y/N can fire back." She sat in her chair again, looking positively delighted at the forthcoming, "A battle of the best wits perhaps!"
Heeseung smiled widely and stepped forward to where you were sitting, plopping down on the opposite chair. Your professor had always kept two chairs facing each other in front of her class, for debates, her reason sounded. And now, as you sat in front of Heeseung and his stupidly handsome smirk, you swore you were going to bring him down.
"First of firsts-" Heeseung began, as everyone's attention caught on you. "-your opinion is speaking from a highly biased perspective." "How so?" You fired back, before he could even breathe, "I had already stated in the beginning, about how this cannot be on a biased perspective, since fiction based in actual words cannot be this animated." Heeseung smiled again, which threw you off track a bit. God he's handsome, you thought, too handsome....
"Of course but must I remind you, that this book was perhaps the first out of many to start with the trope of enemies to lovers?" Why were his eyes like galaxies?, "Jane Austen invented an entire trope, which still remains a genius scan of literature to this day. How could you say it's too animated?"
"Yes but-"
"Furthermore-" Heeseung continued, not giving you the chance to breathe, "inventing new tropes does not break this 'law of literature' as you say. Since there was no law of literature to begin with. So please Miss Y/N-" he leaned forward, looking at you with dangerous eyes, "-don't you dare say that Pride and Prejudice is a worthless piece of literature just because it does not have proof of poetry."
The class let out a breath as you sat frozen in your seat. Someone actually breaking your argument was a first for you.
God, his hair. His pretty curly hair.
You didn't realise how long you'd been staring at Heeseung with widened eyes until your professor clapped her hands together again.
"Well then!" She said cheerfully, effectively breaking you out of your stupor, "I believe this goes for grading both of you an A+. Half of your grade is filled you two! Congratulations!" The class broke out into applause as you thanked her and awkwardly shook hands with Heeseung as the bell rang loudly. "Well class I'll be seeing you next time!" Your professor announced, as everyone started filing out. "Oh Y/N, Heeseung a moment please?"
You stopped your feet from stepping out the door and immediately spun around, marching off towards your professor, seeing Heeseung doing the same. "Yes Professor Kim?" Heeseung responded with those stupid puppy eyes of his before you could. Professor Kim smiled gently at both of you, before pulling out her tablet.
"I need a bit of help from both of you. It'll be sort of a favour to you too." She handed you the tablet, which had a sort of letter open on it. Heeseung leaned from behind you, and put his chin on your shoulder, making your stomach feel clammy. He smelled good too, you thought, like fresh paper.
"An event is being hosted by our Dean for all majors." Professor Kim smiled, "Sort of a career booster you could say. We were instructed to pick two students from our classes to have the assignment of checking essays, and documentations and whatnot pertaining to their majors."
"And you chose to pick us Ma'am? I'm flattered." Heeseung chuckled, as Professor Kim laughed to his quip. "Well you two are my best students." She drawled, "So the assignment I'm giving you is-" she pulled out a huge stack of papers from beneath her desk. It shocked you how quickly they appeared out of nowhere, like magic. "-these are all essays collected by last year's class. I want you to go through them, give them a good critic, and grade them according to you. You will personally grade each one, taking each other's help of course, since it's a group project. And it will lend you a helping hand since you'll be getting a certificate which you can use to get into any company you'd like!"
You and Heeseung glanced at each other and we're relieved to see the same excited expression face back at them. This was a rare opportunity, a diamond of the first water you'd say. And you had to grab it, even If that meant it was with a person you despised with your entire being.
"I'll do it Professor!" You replied positively to which Heeseung also nodded frantically as if to say the same thing. "Great!" Professor Kim clapped her hands together again, "Oh and one rule is you two have to work together in this classroom. Since the Dean wants to provide you with an opportunity to see how workplace relationships doon out."
Your heart dropped to your stomach as you heard her words. You, working with Heeseung in an empty classroom? You would rather have praised Pride and Prejudice.
"Here, the keys." Professor Kim handed you and Heeseung a pair of keys, "You can work in the evening if you want. But make sure to complete it as soon as you can alright? Oh and you can skip classes if you want to do this first, since the Dean is prioritising this before anything else." You nodded in response to her instructions and bowed her goodbye as you and Heeseung walked out.
"So-" Heeseung stuffed his hands in his pockets, "You wanna work on this shit tonight?" "Unless you have any other appointments, sure we can work on it tonight." You responded, coldly, not looking at him in the eye. "Alright then." Heeseung scoffed, "Meet you here at 8?" "Alright." The end of your conversation came a little too fast, you thought, but you couldn't stand looking into his pretty little eyes and talking to him, as if he didn't just embarrass you infront of your entire class a few minutes ago. "Y/N wait!" Heeseung called, running up to you, as you were about to exit the building. "What?" You spun around to face him. "Shouldn't we exchange numbers first?" Heeseung handed you his phone, which had his contact list open. "Why? So you can take me out on a date later?" You shot at him. A smirk tugged on the corner of Heeseung lips, but he resisted, not wanting to anger you more. You looked cute when you were angry in his opinion. "No. Maybe incase you were murdered by someone on the way here, I can call you and scold you on why tardiness is a childish thing to do." Heeseung joked. You smiled sarcastically at him as you handed him his phone back, having typed in your number. "Eight o'clock princess don't you forget now."
Tick tock tick. The clock's quiet sons echoed through the empty class. 'Don't forget.' you scoffed, 'And he's the one who's late.' The time on your watch sounded 8:30 and yet Heeseung wasn't here. You had given up waiting for him, and started on the assignment yourself, already finishing two of the army of papers. You were a hard critic, and it clearly showed in the way you were seeping your eyes through the ink.
"Soojin he's late! I can't come back now!" Your roommate had called you, in the midst of your third paper, complaining about a cockroach in the room. "Just call your boyfriend, and don't be such a pussy it won't hurt you." You scoffed at Soojin, whose scared whimpers were heard clearly through the phone.
"How's the checking going?" Soojin asked, having seemingly calmed down. You groaned and leaned back in your chair, wincing at the crack of your backbone. Your back must have become stiff from the amount of time you had been sitting in that chair. You felt pity for your professors for the first time, having finally been in their shoes.
"Heeseung's not here yet and I'm literally so fed up right now." You complained to Soojin, "That handsome bastard told me not to be late, and now look where I am! Asshole seriously." "He'll turn up, cool down Y/N." Soojin soothed you. You heard a sound of crashing in the background and stifled a laugh, assuming that Soojin must have miraculously jumped from one bed to the other. "I told you he's a playboy." Soojin panted through the phone, "Maybe he's busy fucking some poor girl in his frat house." You rolled your eyes at her statement.
"Please." You scoffed, "He couldn't fuck a girl if he wanted to, with the tiny ass cock he has." Soojin let out a raucous laugh from the other side of the phone. "How the fuck do you know he has a tiny cock?" She chuckled. "Intuition baby." You responded, "And my intuition is never wrong."
"Like how it was on the day of our debate?"
A familiar voice again. But this time, the warmth in it wasn't present. You whipped your head around to the door, where Heeseung stood, leaning against the door and smirking. "Soojin I'll call you back." You cut the call, before Soojin could respond.
"Hey." You called out to Heeseung. "Hey." Heeseung shot back, sitting down on the chair in front of you, spreading his legs wide. An involuntary gulp went through your throat. "What were you saying princess?" He leaned forward, his shirt dropping down slightly, "I have a tiny what now?" The dim lighting of the room, made his eyes look dark, and the leather of his black jacket, gleam more. "I- I wasn't saying anything Heeseung." You responded, turning your chair back to the desk, warmth coming up on your cheeks. Heeseung cocked his head to the side and smirked at your flustered state.
"Really princess?" He smirked, edging closer to you. The smell of his cologne filled your nostrils again. His glasses dropped on his nose, and he hadn't even bother to push them back up. "Heeseung just get to work." You sternly responded, trying to keep your cool. How could you though? When he was so close to you, lips almost touching your ear. "For you information-" Heeseung spoke, turning your attention away from the paper you were working on, "-I had a friend who needed a lift to his dorm, so I ran a little late. But you couldn't wait for me could you princess?" He smirked, laying his hand on top of yours, "Just couldn't wait to critique all those papers like the good girl you are." "He-Heeseung." "Shh don't." Heeseung shushed you, "You want to see how tiny of a cock I really have then hmm?"
"Heeseung we shouldn't." You hesitated, feeling your legs warm up. "No one's gonna know, as long as you don't make a noise alright?" He kissed your neck gently, turning your figure to his, still sitting in the chair. "Oh princess, already wet for me?" He chuckled, toying with the button of your shirt. "Heeseung-" you moaned out, quickly unbuttoning your shirt, as Heeseung took off his jacket and threw it on the desk. You pulled back slightly as your mind came to its proper senses. "Where are you going doll?" Heeseung questioned, hands resting on your thigh, squeezing it from time to time, "Don't worry princess, no one's gonna know."
Heeseung brings his lips down to yours in an instant, wasting no time. You gasp at his sudden actions and he takes advantage of that by entering his tongue into your mouth. You grab at his shoulders while he cups your jaw with both of his hands. Your hands reach his hair, softly tugging at the root and you hear him whine. Heeseung sucks on your bottom lip, catching it between his teeth and pulling it back to look at you. You look up at him and he takes your face in his hands.
“You wanna see my cock baby?” Heeseung asks in a teasing tone as he looks down at you. You could feel the throb in his pants press against your legs as you whimper. “Hee please.” You whine, squirming as he places a kiss between your breasts. Heeseung runs his hands up and down the sides of your body. If he was going to fuck you on the classroom floor right there and then, you were going to let him.
“Oh, you're feeling extra polite today huh? Please, Heeseung.” Heeseung mocks you with a tiny laugh. You groan in embarrassment and hide your face with your hands. Heeseung just lets out another laugh and wraps his hands around your wrists, prying them away from your face. He transfers both of your wrists to one hand, holding them over your head as he uses his other hand to trail his fingers down your body.
“Don’t hide your pretty face now, princess.” Heeseung says nonchalantly as he dips a hand inside your leggings and panties to feel your dripping cunt. His glasses were beginning to fog up slightly as he whipped them off of his face, setting them down on the desk. You clench around nothing when you feel his middle finger dip into your wetness and bring it up to your clit, rubbing slow circles around it. You moan softly as Heeseung teases your clit, never taking his eyes off of your face.
Heeseung begins to rub your clit faster, and you buck your hips up into his fingers. You hear him laugh at your eagerness and he presses soft kisses into your neck. Heeseung takes his fingers off of your clit and he snaps the waistband of your trousers against your pelvis.
“Dirty girl. Never thought you'd be like this.” Heeseung says with a smirk and you dumbly nod your head. The sounds of your heavy breathing and your pussy squelching around his fingers make your legs begin to shake.
Heeseung spits on your cunt to lubricate it even more, and that's what makes you come undone. Your cunt clenches around his fingers, sucking them in as he fingers you through your orgasm.
Heeseung takes his time kissing down your body, letting your need and desperation build by the second. He tugs one nipple and then the other into his mouth, suckling at the perky nubs and massaging your areola between his lips. Your hips are trembling with anticipation, the space between your legs aching to feel Heeseung's kiss.
Stars hover over you, or at least, that’s how it feels. Your eyes are closed, awareness cut off to the world around you except the place Heeseung's face is buried. He devours your cunt like a man starved, swallowing you whole. Heeseung doesn’t come up for air; he doesn’t need to, because all he breathes is you. Your back is arched and arms stretched forward, fingers clutching Heeseung’s hair in fistfuls.
Your thighs are shaking, reflexively clamping around Heeseung's’s face. He keeps forcing them open, demanding full access to your cunt, even as you buck and claw and convulse. Your mouth hangs open in a stupor; a thin line of drool trickles down your cheek and connects to the cold floor beneath you.
Heeseung laps at your slit like he’s never tasted you before, like he never will again. His tongue pads between your lips, upward strokes that end with the tip of his tongue flicking your clit with a firm intensity that has you reeling. Tugging at his hair, trying not to scream his name incoherently, you ride out the longest orgasm you’ve ever had. Tears burn the corners of your eyes, stars bursting in the black sky of your vision. Heeseung doesn’t stop licking your cunt till you release his hair.
“M’gonna fuck you now, okay?” Heeseung says sweetly and you nod your head. He runs his hard cock through your folds, and he catches your clit, making you jerk a little. Heeseung slowly begins to push himself into you and you throw your head back against the hard material of the desk.
“Fuck, knew you’d be tight when I felt you around my fingers.” Heeseung grits out, and he continues to push himself into you until he bottoms out. He starts to move at a slow pace, and he whines when you beg him to move faster. “Fucking whore. Bet you think about me fucking you in class don't you?” Heeseung spits out as he pushes himself harder and deeper into your sloppy cunt. You moan at his words, and you try to reply but all that comes out is a pathetic whimper.
“Hee, I’m gonna cum.” You cry out, and you clench around Heeseung's fat cock.
“ Cum for me princess.” Heeseung. moans out, fucking into you so deep, a ring of your cum and his has formed at the base of his cock. You run your fingers through his hair, harshly tugging on it as you come undone at his expense. Heeseung buries his face into your neck as he cums, sucking at your pulse point. You feel his cum shoot into you and it only prolongs your own orgasm.
After a couple minutes of you two catching your breath, Heeseung takes his face out of your neck and plops down in the chair, pulling you onto his lap. You sit there, dazed for a few seconds, burrowing your head in his chest, his heartbeat reminding you where you were.
"Well that was a whirlwind of emotions." He says at last, when you start to stir from your hypnosis, "You good doll?" You nod slightly and feel Heeseung's arms wrap around you, putting you safely down on the chair, as he put his clothes back on, slowly picking up yours as well.
"Heeseung the assignments." You panic, as he puts your shirt back on you. "It's alright princess." He coos at you, wrapping an arm around your waist, "We can do that in the morning. Let's get you home." He guides you slowly out the door. "So-" he smirks, locking the classroom with his key "Same time, same place tomorrow?"

Mr. Choi from 2A • Jiung Choi
prompt More Than Words Elementary gets the surprise of a lifetime when the kids figure out that the two kindest teachers for 4th and 5th grade are married. pairing teacher!jiung x fem!reader genre school teachers, established relationship, fluff warnings mentions of food, playful banter, school word count 3,796 (this story wrote itself) a/n hi! i'm back! I have something written this time! jiung is my ultimate bias, so i’ve been itching to write something for him. please note that this fic will be told in 3rd pov, but kind of centric to none of the main characters, but to one of jiung’s students, emma!
want more piwon posts from me? check out my fake texts here and here!
There are many things in the world that Emma loves. Her parents, for one – obviously. They spoil her endlessly, and even gave her a little brother, so she loves them.
Emma also loves trucks. She loves them simply because her dad always lifts her up to get in the thing. He even has to do a little stretch to get in himself. Big trucks that make even her dad seem small are always fun.
Third on the list – not that it has a particular order – will have to go to the bakery near her house. Ms. Lim makes the best cupcakes known to man, and her mom loves them just as much as she does, so they like to splurge on them every once in a while.
Fourth; the quaint burger place lodged in an alleyway on that busy street Emma always forgets the name of. Every once in a while, her mom and dad take her (and her little brother, now) to the place, and she always manages to see her uncle manning the bar. She wonders if he works there.
And last, but certainly not least; her 4th grade teacher Mr. Choi. Mr. Choi never enters the room without a fond smile on his face as he greets the class in the morning. He never lets them leave without some words of praise when they leave the class in the afternoon.
Mr. Choi is very attentive, explaining things a million times over for everyone to understand (who knew there were different methods to learning how to multiply big numbers?) and is very interactive with his class. Mr. Choi is probably the kindest person Emma knows.
If someone were to come up to her and shove a microphone and a camera in her face (because people do that now) and ask her who she thought the kindest person in the world was, her first answer would definitely be Mr. Choi. That’s just how good he is.
Anyways, before the author starts her spiel on the guy, let’s get into the actual story – shall we?
The list of things that Emma loves in this world differ depending on what day you ask her. Her constants will always be her parents (and brother), trucks, Ms. Lim’s bakery, the burger place, and Mr. Choi from class 2A.
Lately though, Emma thinks that a new constant might add to her list of things she loves in this world. The thought came to her mind halfway through the previous semester.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
At the beginning of her first semester in fourth grade, a new teacher for fifth grade arrived in bubbly fashion. With beautiful kind eyes and a charming smile; the new teacher tumbled her way into the lives of everyone at More Than Words Elementary School.
Emma was one of the people who only entertained things within her bubble. As a bubble dweller, the only things she knew dwelled in her bubble with her. She didn’t know anything about new staff or teachers unless someone entered her bubble to tell her. Which is how she found out about the new teacher in the first place.
She had many friends within the school who greeted her in the mornings, and her cousin Shelby was friends with her next door neighbor Tommy. Those two always brought her the gossip from their fifth grade circle.
They were all hanging out on the playground for recess when Shelby mentioned it to Emma. Something along the lines of the nicest teacher ever just came to their school or something. Emma excused Shelby’s comments because the elder didn’t have Mr. Choi in fourth grade.
Tommy described the woman like she hung the stars in the sky every single night for him to look at and ponder her. Shelby told him to write a book if he wanted to be that sappy. Emma laughed even if she didn’t get the reference all too well.
For the rest of that week, the new teacher was all her fifth grade friends seemed to want to talk about. She stopped listening to them halfway through. Mr. Choi was the nicest teacher ever, so she wanted to see his competition with her own two eyes.
If someone was listening to her thoughts, then they made quick plans, because the next day called for a multitude of rain and the absence of half of the students in her small school. Emma still went to school because her mom and dad had jobs to go to despite the rain, and her grandma was out of the country so no one her parents trusted could watch their kids.
She walked happily to her class, thinking of the pastries she would smell in the afternoon (as it was the day her and her mom went to the bakery) when she spotted a beautiful woman standing outside her class door talking to Mr. Choi. Her smile stretched like the sun on the horizon as it rose in the morning. A warmth like no other had hit Emma the moment she saw it.
Emma slowed her pace as she neared the classroom, and she heard the familiar words of reassurance from her teacher to the lady in front of him to ease her worries about whatever she stressed about. The kind words sounded a bit different in Emma’s ears though.
Emma greeted the adults like she was taught, and both Mr. Choi and the teacher greeted her with similar waves of kindness. The other teacher even knew her name. Why would the other teacher know her name?
Emma tilted her head in confusion and stood before the two teachers. The lady laughed and nudged Mr. Choi to get him to notice. Then, the teacher moved her left hand from the books she clung so tightly to her chest and extended it to the little girl before her.
“Hi Emma Kang, I’m the new fifth grade teacher Ms. (last name). It’s very nice to meet you!” The teacher introduced, and the shock couldn’t come fast enough as it morphed Emma’s face.
The lady before her was the kind teacher Shelby and Tommy told her about. Emma shook Ms. (last name)’s hand, feeling the familiar weight of an engagement band (her aunt Nina had just gotten engaged last month, so she knows how it feels on someone’s hand), and told the teacher that it was nice to meet her as well.
Turns out, Mr. Choi and Ms. (last name) were discussing the merge of their classrooms for the day so that they can watch movies and play games. None of the other fifth grade teachers wanted to do such things with their classes, (as it was still the beginning of the semester) but Mr. Choi thought it would be fun to let his kids relax for one day.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
Rainy days had now meant joint classes after the success of the first one that day, and Emma realized that she hoped for rainy days a lot more, so that she can see Ms. (last name) again and again and again. This was when she thought of the possibility of a new constant on her list.
Emma thinks that Ms. (last name) felt like the sun, especially when she brightened up the classrooms. Ms. (last name) was extra involved in just about everything, and Emma found herself wanting to join a few things just to see the bubbly teacher again.
Now, you (as the reader) might be wondering where I’ll fit the synopsis into this story, and I’m getting there. Anyways, back to the story.
Emma also notices how much livelier Mr. Choi seemed to get whenever Ms. (last name) would come around their area, for rainy days or not. The two teachers seemed really close, like they were friends before working together. Well, that’s how Emma saw it. Shelby and Tommy seemed to disagree though.
The two fifth graders often talked about how they coax small bits of information out of their homeroom teacher whenever they all can’t seem to understand a particularly hard subject (which is usually math.) Ms. (last name) never got into great detail about a lot of stuff, but she always talked about her fiance with a sense of “love” and “comfort”.
Emma knew about those feelings and those words, (she’s 9 for crying out loud) but no one ever seemed to explain the concept of love to her in a way where she understood or related to it, so topics like these had her confused. When she asked what that had to do with anything, Shelby exclaimed that she had a feeling that Mr. Choi and Ms. (last name) were a couple.
Emma sat there for a long while trying to see things from her cousin’s point of view. Sure, they were friendly and got along well, but a couple? They didn’t seem like a couple. She’s seen a few couples in her nine years on this earth, and her teachers don’t act as gross as those couples.
Besides, they both arrive in separate cars. From the couples Emma has seen, they usually arrive in the same car, do they not? Her mom and dad are almost always in the same vehicle. Aunt Nina and her fiance Sam never leave without each other at events. Uncle Darren and Aunt Lily only have one car. They drop Shelby to school in it everyday.
Tommy and Shelby bickered back and forth whilst Emma was left with the most confusing theory of her life.
Emma decided that day that there was no way Mr. Choi and Ms. (last name) were a couple. Well, that was until dinnertime, when she decided to ask the one couple she constantly has to see.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
“Mom, dad, can people be a couple even if they don’t hug and hold hands and kiss and arrive at places in the same car?” She asked them once her food was graced and her mom told her to dig in.
Both of her parents stopped their utensils from reaching their mouths to look at their daughter, seeing her staring back at them with a curious glint in her eyes.
“Sweetie, I think we’re gonna need more context than that.” Her mom answered.
“Your mom’s right, princess. What brought this on so suddenly?” Her dad added on.
“Well, you guys know my favorite teacher Mr. Choi right?” She started off, watching her parents put down their eating utensils to give her their undivided attention.
“Yes we do, what about him?” Her dad asked.
“And you guys know the pretty teacher I told you about a while ago? Ms. (last name)?” She inquired.
“Yes we do sweetheart.” Her mom answered, picking up her son’s spoon to help him eat his rice.
“Okay, so today at recess I mentioned to Shelby and Tommy how I thought the teachers were friends before working together because of how well they seem to just – what’s the word I’m looking for?”
“Coexist?”
“No not that one … although that one is really good, thanks mom.”
“Of course!”
“Cooperate then?” Her dad chimed in, finally picking his utensil up.
“Oh yes that word! Thank you dad, you’re so smart! Anyways, yes I mentioned it to them, and then Shelby said something about how she thinks they’re a couple? So then I sat there to think about it and that doesn’t make sense? How are they a couple when they don’t kiss and hug and hold hands and go everywhere together and use the same car and have kids?” Emma rambled, getting more confused than ever as she’s explaining it to her parents.
“Maybe they don’t act that way because kids are present, princess.” Her dad supplied.
“Dad, you and mom were literally kissing in the kitchen … with me present!” Emma rebutted.
“That’s because you’re our kid. There’s a difference when it’s your own kid,” Her mom informed.
“And besides, they work together don’t they? Why act like a couple at work? That’s not very professional.” Her mom continued.
“You can’t do stuff like that at work?” Emma asked incredulously.
“No you can’t Emma.” Her dad replied.
“Wow, you learn something new everyday. What about the car thing then, they’re married and don’t come to work together? That’s so odd. You guys ride to work together all the time.” Emma questioned.
“Emma first of all, not all couples are married,” Her mom told her, ignoring the gasp of disbelief that escapes her nine year old.
“Secondly, they probably don’t even live together. Of course they’ll come to work in different cars.” Her mom continued.
Emma’s shocked beyond words, her brother Eric wasn't paying attention, just eating his food and replaying the opening for power rangers in his mind as he ignored them. Her dad’s just thinking about how all of this could’ve been avoided if they just gave her electronics and discovered the weird stuff on the internet in the first place. He pushed the thought from his mind though, his wife said no so he sticks beside her.
“Wait, so you’re telling me that couples aren’t married and don’t live together and can’t act gross and work?” Emma asked.
“Your Aunt Nina and her fiance Sam aren’t married, and they’re a couple.” Her dad answered.
“They’re practically married.” Emma replied.
“Wait, but do you guys think they’re a couple? An unmarried one who doesn't live together?” Emma followed up.
She saw her mom and dad rack their brains to see if they remembered anything out of the ordinary between the fourth and fifth grade teachers that night. And then she heard them agree with her crazy claim.
The next day, when she took Shelby’s side in the argument, their conversations shifted forever. The three friends had made it their new mission to find out if their teachers were really together.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
In between that time, the semester had ended, and the long awaited break had begun. Her mom and dad finally sat her down and told her about the different types of couples and all that jazz. They also took her to see her grandparents, where she stayed with all of her cousins for two weeks.
Emma, Shelby and Tommy met regularly to talk about their random findings, even during their break. Nothing was bigger than the time Emma saw them both at Ms. Lim’s bakery though. The two teachers didn’t notice her, and she didn’t try to get noticed as she saw them share a slice of cheesecake and basically smiled at each other for five minutes.
Through it all though, the mission seemed to be leading them practically nowhere. The new semester started with Shelby and Tommy telling Emma how Ms. (last name) came back with a new ring on her finger, signifying that she finally got married.
Tommy told her to check Mr. Choi’s hands to see if he had a ring on as well to confirm their suspicions. Mr. Choi always had rings on his fingers though, so that plan was fruitless.
For days on end, Emma tried to figure out if there was a new ring on Mr. Choi’s finger, and for days on end it seemed as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
Just as Emma was about to give up though, the answers to their questions fell right into her lap.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
It was a rainy Thursday, and like all rainy days, Emma gets dropped off to school earlier than usual. Emma told her parents goodbye at the entrance of the school, watching her dad’s truck drive off with her mom waving at her wildly from the window.
Emma began to turn around to head inside before hearing the familiar purr of her teacher’s SUV pulling into the parking lot. She then stopped fully once she saw her teacher help Ms. (last name) out of the car?!?!!?!?!
Mr. Choi and Ms. (last name) just came out of the same car. Mr. Choi is helping Ms. (last name) with her bags. Mr. Choi – OH MY GOODNESS DID MR. CHOI JUST KISS MS. (LAST NAME)’S FOREHEAD? were the thoughts that ran through Emma’s mind once she saw what transpired.
Emma wanted to stand there and rack her brain to find the sense in all of what had happened, but the teachers were both coming towards the entrance? Oh my goodness, Emma Kang. Go and run into a hole right now.
Emma picked up her pace and starts to walk away, but the warm tilt of a harmonious tone traveled to her ears as Ms. (last name) greeted her from her walk toward the door. Emma stopped like a deer in headlights, and turned slowly to greet the two teachers.
My goodness, they’re even sharing an umbrella. Emma Kang, for the first time in her life, just wants to not be a curious kid. Having to see this from her favorite teachers isn’t good for her psyche.
“Emma Kang, it’s been a while. How are you doing this morning? Are you ready for our rainy day movie session? I didn’t expect the rain to happen so quickly into the semester, but man am I excited for our class to get together again and have some fun. Do you want to help Mr. Choi and I choose the first movie? We’ve been arguing about the lineup all –”
“(First name), you’re rambling.” Mr. Choi interrupted, and only one thing entered Emma’s mind like a blaring siren once she saw Ms. (last name) stop and giggle about it, apologizing to the kid.
“You two are married.” Emma blurted out in the midst of Ms. (last name)’s apology, causing the two teachers to freeze up at the accusation – no, the declaration.
They both rubbed their necks in tandem; Ms. (last name) laughing nervously and suddenly finding interest in the school motto placed on the wall beside them. Mr. Choi looked at his wife, and then looked at his (now unfortunate) brightest student.
“You two are married right? Mr. Choi kissed your forehead and you guys got out of the same car and you guys are even holding pinkies over the handle of Ms. (last name)’s bag.” Emma asked, pointing out her deductions to the newlyweds before her.
The air stilled once she continued on with her findings, almost laughing at the fact that they immediately let go of each others’ pinkies. Mr. Choi told Emma to follow them, walking from the entrance and to the classroom of 2A.
Emma watched as they both started to unpack the bags, placing stuff here and there and working together like they’ve been doing this for years. Emma watched a new level of their cooperation unfold on that rainy thursday.
After they had set up everything, Ms. (last name) walked over to Mr. Choi, and pulled at his blazer to get his attention. They had a discussion with wide eyes and ragged whispers for about five minutes before Mr. Choi raised his hands in defeat. That’s when Emma noticed that he forwent the rings he usually donned, one simple band on his left ring finger catching the light in the room.
“I guess the cat’s out of the bag now.” Ms. (last name) said after a few moments of awkward silence.
Emma’s eyes widened to the size of saucers once she realized that they were admitting to her declarations.
“You guys really are married?” She carefully asked.
“Yes, yes we are. We recently tied the knot during the break.” Mr. Choi answers, stifling his laughter once he sees confusion slide across his student’s face.
“What does tying a knot have to do with your marriage?” Emma confusingly questioned.
“It’s an expression. One of the many ways of saying you got married without actually saying it.” Ms. (last name) replies, pinching her husband for laughing.
“Oh.” Is all Emma said in response.
The adults studied her face for any odd reactions from Emma Kang, who started to have another mental battle with herself.
“We actually wanted to tell you and the other kids about it later on.” Mr. Choi supplies helplessly.
That didn’t seem to work though, as Emma continued to just … blankly stare at them.
“Are you upset, Emma Kang?” Ms. (last name) asked after almost three minutes of heavy silence.
Then Emma blinks a few times, looking up at them with something close to joy swimming in her eyes. Mr. Choi and Ms. (last name) let out the breath they didn’t even know they were holding.
“Upset? This is the best news I’ve gotten all school year. Why would I be upset when the two nicest people in the world are married?” Emma exclaims.
“I thought you’d be upset that we didn’t say anything.” Mr. Choi replied.
“I thought you had a crush on Mr. Choi, to be honest.” Ms. (last name) replied at the same time.
“I’m nine.” Emma deadpanned.
“When I was nine, I had a crush on my music teacher. I don’t see how that excuse is relevant.” Ms. (last name) said.
“(First name) you were just an odd kid.” Mr. Choi followed up.
Emma chuckled when she saw Ms. (last name) hit Mr. Choi on the arm for his comment.
“You who was crushing over Sam from ‘Danny Phantom’ at that exact age, puh-lease.” Ms. (last name) accused.
“At least she and I were closer in age than you and your old shriveled up music teacher.” Mr. Choi responded.
“Sam isn’t even real.” Ms. (last name) said.
“Neither was your chance with that wrinkly old music teacher.” Mr. Choi replied.
“He was 25 oh my goodness Jiung, stop calling him old.” Ms. (last name) exclaimed.
“Even worse.” Mr. Choi replied.
The adults stopped their playful banter when they heard Emma cracking up from her seat.
“You guys are the sweetest.” She replied once she stopped laughing, shocked at the fond looks that stretched their smiles wide at her.
୧‿̩͙ ˖︵ ꕀ⠀ ♱⠀ ꕀ ︵˖ ‿̩͙୨
The rainy day ended up with Emma harboring their secret for them, a lot of movies, and a kid crashing from a sugar rush after sneakily eating too much candy.
Later that semester, the teachers decided to tell their class separately about their marriage, which breaks another spout of gossip between Emma, Shelby and Tommy. The news spread through More Than Words Elementary like wildfire that day.
Questions were thrown at the couple for weeks to come after that, and a new quest (bet) was formed between the kid trio. Guessing when they’d have their first kid.
Emma now helped the kind teachers set up for movie days whenever it rained, and a new constant had been added to Emma’s long list of things she loved. Her parents (and brother), trucks, Ms. Lim’s bakery, the burger place, Ms. (last name) and Mr. Choi from Class 2A. That was her list of constants.

Masterlist<3
Summary: The request sums it up, read it hoe Pairing: Remus Lupin x reader Warnings: Alcohol consumption and that's all I can think abt hehe Word Count: 4.5K (i'm sorry) Requested: Yes
A/N: I'm absolutely sobbing. This is so cute!!! I'm using the Reggie was a spy for the order wild card and roll with that. Tysm for this awesome idea, nonnie! And sorry it took so long.
Remus knew magic existed, the type of magic that opens doors, gives you luck or disarms someone. But until he met her, he didn't know there was a type of magic that could be contained in someone's eyes, someone's smile, or even in that little quirk she had of squinting every time she focused.
Y/N Y/L/N. Even her name felt like the sweetest honey when it rolled off your tongue and into the air, he figured. She was a new kind of magic and Remus was hooked from the get go. They had met on a rather peculiar set of circumstances. When Moony first got to college, he had no friends or anyone nearby to help him cope with the abrupt transition. The boys visited as much as they could, but it'd be for about an hour or two before they had to go back to the ministry.
So, as he did when he arrived at Hogwarts, Remus found solace in reading and taking his wolfsbane at appropriate times. He was doing a classics mayor and reading the Plato classics was a convenient way to kill time while doing something productive. The boy spent hours in the library, sitting on the couches or getting some annotations done on the desks; he'd be done with the school's classics collection before the semester was over if he kept that pace.
He would have if he hadn't found those notes. Remus first noticed them in a worn copy of a compilation from a specific period of Plato's scripts, the third page in Philebus. "Socrates is being very reductive. I don't like it. Out of character, I do declare" written in red ink, cursive letters delicate in the ripped white paper.
He giggled at that, his thoughts exactly. Moony picked the piece of paper and examined it to see if it had any indications of who might've written it, but he found nothing. He only knew that the person who wrote it had a ruined red pen; the stains of ink sitting messily on the opposite side of the annotation. Remus was a sucker for mystery stories and he viewed this as an opportunity of having one of his own!
A short-lived one, since he cracked the case when a pretty girl on his history of philosophy class asked around for a red pen. Remus frantically but quietly rummaged through his satchel and found one just in time.
He rushed to her, offering it out “Here” he smiled, looking down at her as she looked up at him. “Thanks… Remus isn’t it? I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure. Y/N Y/L/N”. Y/N introduced herself, offering her hand out. Stained in red. The boy stared shocked at the realization this was the person he’d been looking for.
“Oh shit m’sorry, it looks like I committed a murder or something. My pen started leaking yesterday while I was studying in the library” She laughed and Remus swore he’d faint if he hadn’t gripped her hand. “Actually…” Remus started, searching in his pocket for the piece of paper he kept, when he finally found it, he showed it to her and a smile broke on those pretty lips.
“…I hope you don’t mind! I-I kept it. Been looking for you, it made me laugh” He admitted, handing it to her “You found me then! And, you’re very much welcome to keep it, Remus” Y/N grinned and Remus mirrored her expression sweetly. They met for coffee the next day. The day after that, they studied together. And the week after, they shared lunch.
About two months after they talked for the first time, they had gone on a date every single week. From museum outings to walks around campus if one of them didn't have much time. They also sat together in philosophy and, turns out, literature (which they realized they shared after).
Y/N gifted him a cool rock once, and he kissed her.
He kept the rock in his pocket ever since.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
"Come on, mate, you gotta tell us who she is!" James exclaimed, his excitement palpable as he repeatedly patted the worn wooden bar in the cozy pub they had agreed to meet at. Remus chuckled and shook his head, a fond smile dancing on his lips as he took another sip of his whiskey.
"You've been talking non-stop about her since you two met! The last three times we've seen each other, it's been Y/N this, Y/N that. We've gotta meet the missus," Sirius playfully teased, giving Remus a light shove with his shoulder.
Rolling his eyes playfully, Remus glanced at his friends, grateful for their persistent curiosity but also hesitant to share too much. "Oh, Pads, don't call her that! We're not even official yet, and I doubt we'll ever be. She'll find someone, alright, but I'm just good old Remus," he replied, a hint of wistfulness shadowing his gaze.
It was true; good old Remus had learned how to stop caring about what other people thought of him, but that didn't mean he was entirely confident about who he was.
Navigating the Muggle world presented its own set of challenges for Remus. He knew that at some point, he would have to confront the whole "Hey, I'm a wizard, and there's this whole other world you don't know about, hope you don't mind!" situation with Y/N.
Then there were the lingering money issues that weighed on his mind. College was not cheap, but he had managed to secure a decent scholarship, which alleviated some of the burden. He hoped Y/N wouldn't care about his financial situation. And, of course, there was the delicate matter of revealing his true nature as a literal werewolf. How would she react when she found out?
Yeah.
He was good old Remus: poor Remus, monster Remus, scarred Remus, wizard Remus. If he were honest with himself, he was surprised they had made it past the first day, considering he had stupidly worn a short-sleeved t-shirt without anything to conceal the telltale signs of his condition.
But she noticed the perceptive and kind-hearted soul that she was, and she chose not to mention it. In that moment, Remus couldn't help but imagine the possibilities, but he also knew that reality had a way of reminding him of his limitations. Moony knew he would never be able to claim her as his own. Not in this lifetime, not in the next.
For now, he chose to cherish the moments they shared, basking in her laughter and marveling at the way her hair defied gravity with its radiant beauty. She was his bit of magic in a world that often seemed devoid of it. Deep down, however, he couldn't shake the nagging certainty that good things didn't last for boys like him—boys with tragedy coursing through their veins.
"Yeah, no. We're not doing this shit again," Sirius declared, shaking his head in disagreement. Remus's best friends had grown accustomed to his self-deprecating tendencies and were determined to lift his spirits. Remus might have been a mysterious figure to some, but to the Marauders, he was an open book, their brother.
"That's why she likes you, mate. You're good old amazing, lovely, smart, hot Remus!" James proclaimed with a boisterous cheer, pulling Remus into a tight embrace. "Tell you what, bring her to Harry's birthday party this weekend! I'm sure Lily won't mind," he suggested, his mischievous grin widening. Sirius enthusiastically chimed in, nodding in agreement. "Just ask her first and let me know, okay? I don't want Harry to have a bad time becaus-"
"Oh, Moons, the party is more for us than for him! He'll be out like a light by eight, and we'll get wasted like we always do," Prongs interjected, his infectious laughter filling the air, causing Remus to join in, his worries momentarily forgotten in the camaraderie of his friends.
There was no way out of this one, not that he sought an escape. Remus couldn't blame his best friends for their eagerness to meet Y/N. They knew him better than anyone, and they could see the spark of happiness she had ignited within him. Moony did little to hide his excitement, his heart fluttering with the hope that maybe, just maybe, things would work out.
Now, he just needed Lily's approval so he could gather the courage to ask the girl who had captivated his heart to accompany him to the birthday celebration—a step that held the promise of a new chapter in his life, one filled with both joy and uncertainty
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Remus nervously fiddled with the corner of his book, stealing glances at Y/N across the library. The soft rays of afternoon sunlight filtered through the stained glass windows, casting a warm, golden glow on the rows of ancient tomes and the elegant wooden shelves that lined the room. But in that moment, all Remus could see was Y/N, a radiant presence amidst the tranquil surroundings.
Summoning his courage, Remus took a deep breath and approached her table. The scent of old parchment mingled with the delicate fragrance of her perfume, creating an intoxicating blend that filled his senses. As he neared, he couldn't help but notice the way her eyes sparkled with intelligence and curiosity as she immersed herself in the world of words. Her hair cascaded down in gentle waves, its hue reminiscent of auburn leaves in autumn, and he found himself captivated by the way it framed her face, enhancing her natural beauty.
"Hey, love," Remus greeted her with a warm smile, trying his best to appear at ease. "Mind if I join you for a moment?"
Y/N looked up, a surprised yet welcoming expression crossing her features. Her eyes met Remus's, and a playful glimmer danced within their depths. She gestured to the seat across from her, her voice laced with gentle humor. "Well, if you insist. But only if you promise not to distract me from my riveting studies."
Remus chuckled, grateful for her light-hearted response. He took the offered seat, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "I'll do my best to behave, I promise," he replied, a twinkle in his own eyes. "But I do have something on my mind that I wanted to ask you."
Y/N raised an eyebrow. Her curiosity piqued. "Oh, really? Well, go on then. I'm all ears."
"There's a little someone's birthday coming up this weekend," Remus began, his voice filled with playful anticipation. "Harry, James' adorable son, is turning two years old. And, well, I was wondering if you'd like to come with me to the party."
Y/N's face lit up with a mixture of surprise and delight, her smile contagious. "Are you asking me to crash a toddler's birthday party? That sounds like a dangerous proposition," she teased, her tone lighthearted.
Remus laughed, his nerves easing with every moment of their easy banter. "Well, I can promise you that the party will be more entertaining than dangerous," he quipped, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "There'll be cake, balloons, and probably a fair amount of chaos. It's a chance to embrace your inner child if you want to look at it that way."
Y/N pretended to consider it, her finger tapping against her chin. "Hmm, cake, balloons, and chaos? You make a compelling case," she replied, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "How can I resist? Count me in, darling. I'd love to celebrate with you and your mates."
Remus couldn't contain his happiness, his relief flooding through him like a warm wave. "Brilliant!" he exclaimed, a genuine excitement coloring his voice. "I can't wait for you to meet everyone, t-they insisted I brought the girl I don't shut up about to the party"
Y/N smiled at that, holding Remus's hand over the table. "So you've talked to your friends about me?" "Oh shut it" He smiled, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. Right before those grey clouds of self deprecation repeating "this won't last" and "enjoy it before she realizes what you truly are" clouded his mind.
He shoved the thoughts away, holding to Y/N's smile against his lips as if it was an anchor saving him from drowning.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Bad idea. Bad idea. Bad idea.
He really did try to plan it all neatly. From what he'd wear to how he'd introduced her to his friends. Remus even asked them to keep the magic discreet since it was all too soon for that conversation, but for fuck's sake; it all got thrown out the window when he saw her in low waisted flared pants and his Bowie shirt. "H-hey!" He smiled, almost yelling, but she just laughed at his enthusiasm.
"Hi Rem," she sighed, leaving a kiss on the corner of his lips which she left lingering a bit too long. "Ready?" "As I'll ever be!". As Y/N and Remus walked hand in hand, the excitement in the air was palpable. However, beneath her playful demeanor, Y/N couldn't shake the nerves that fluttered in her stomach. Meeting Remus's best friends felt like stepping into a new world, and the fear of not fitting in or being accepted gnawed at her.
She stole a quick glance at Remus, hoping he wouldn't notice the physical manifestations of her anxiety. The last thing she wanted was to burden him with her own inner turmoil. But even as she tried to compose herself, her voice wavered slightly as she spoke.
"Remus, I can't deny that I'm feeling a bit... off," she admitted, her words stumbling over her nervousness. "My heart feels like it's racing a marathon, and there's this knot in my stomach that just won't loosen. I hope it's not too obvious." Remus turned his head towards her, a reassuring smile playing on his lips. His eyes sparkled with warmth and understanding.
"Hey, I get it," he said, his tone comforting. "Meeting new people can be nerve-wracking, and our bodies have interesting ways of letting us know. But you know what? You're doing great, sweetheart, and I'm here with you. We'll take it one step at a time, and I promise we'll have a good time together. So, let's embrace the adventure, nerves and all, and see what the night has in store for us, okay?"
Y/N nodded thankfully, the knot loosening up a little. “Thanks baby”. The world stopped in Remus’ perspective at the pet name but he just nodded and kissed her cheek. He helped. He was a warm blanket after a long day even when moments like those weren’t happening. Comfort.
They eventually got to James’ place; the loud music coming from the two floor house making Y/N feel even more at ease. It radiated a warm, welcoming energy even before stepping in. Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad.
“Deep breath”. They both took a breath before approaching the door and knocking, the wine Remus’ plus one brought close to breaking with the force she was holding it with. A bright smile opened the door, hugging Remus immediately. “You have no idea how happy I am you’re here Moony”.
Y/N smiled sweetly at the nickname the boy had for his best mate. She didn’t know where it came from but James seemed to be the sun reflecting on the moon. On Moony. The girl knew Remus’ light was enough to outshine the sun itself, but the comparison seemed cute.
“You must be Y/N! He can’t shut up about you. Can I hug you? It’s okay if not, Sirius says I need to ask before hugging people but I just love it so much I cannot help myself” He rambled, making her giggle as she uttered a small ‘It’s okay’ and hugged the boy. She noticed Remus staring and just winked at him. “Is that cake I smell?” Y/N grinned, peeking inside before James stepped aside to let them both in.
“Yes, come inside! My wife, Lily, has just finished baking her chocolate cake recipe. It’s bloody brilliant! Harry’s favorite in his short lived culinary experience. You gotta meet him too!” Moony stayed behind, cherishing the way James’ warm welcome made Y/N feel a little more comfortable; her shoulders relaxed as well as her grip on the wine bottle.
He stepped in, hanging his coat on the rack he helped Lily choose when his best friends bought the house. Rapid steps came running down the stairs, and before he turned around, the smell of cigarettes and leather filled his nostrils. “Hello Pads” he smirked, hugging his friend tightly.
“Hey Moons! Did the missus come?” “Yes, she’s outside with James and Lily-“. He was cut short when his best friend, (his eyeliner wearing, muscled, rocker, tattooed, charming best friend) ran all the way into the garden to greet the girl. He was head over heels over.
A new feeling settled into his chest. An unpleasant one. Sirius was a dream. Remus was just good old Remus. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck! He sighed heavily, ran a hand through his hair, and then covered his mouth. Y/N was not one to be too forward, but the way Sirius looked and acted could easily make her reconsider.
It got worse when he heard her loud laugh coming from the garden, followed by a chuckle that unmistakably came from Sirius. His best friend would never do it on purpose, but then again, his charm was never used on purpose. It just sort of happened. Remus sighed and walked outside to find the girl saying hi to Harry.
The toddler had his tiny hand wrapped around the girl's fingers, babbling incoherencies, as Y/N had a full conversation with him. "Are you sure?" she asked and Harry answered nonsense as the girl nodded back. She looked up at Remus coming through the sliding door. "Remus, he's the cutest thing I've ever seen!".
He laughed and walked over to her. The girl immediately wrapped her hands around his arm and hugged him tightly. James winked at Moony and went inside as the conversation ensued, Sirius teasing Remus about the girl he "brought home".
Soon, Y/N was well adapted to their friend's sense of humour and was joking around with Lily about how dumb they could all be. Despite Y/N's worries, it all went by smoothly. The one he got along with the most was James; he loved asking questions, and she loved answering them.
Remus had always loved her laugh; Seeing his best friends being the cause of it made it even better. "I'm telling you, he's insane!" Sirius laughed, bouncing his leg up and down as Harry sat on his lap giggling. "He's an absolute sweetheart" Y/N answered, kissing Remus' cheek as his best friends tried putting dirt (rightfully deserved dirt) on his name.
"Wait until you know him just a tiny bit better. You'll get to see his menacing self... got us in a shit ton of trouble back in school" James chuckled, making Remus roll his eyes and trying to divert her attention by asking if she wanted a bit more cake.
During their evening, Y/N kept a tight grasp on Remus’ hand while smiling at his friend’s jokes. When it was his turn to laugh, Sirius noticed how the girl looked intently over at Remus with a grin on her face. His eyes looked gorgeous in the sun with those little wrinkles when he giggled, she thought.
In that moment, she realized she wanted Remus to say her name as you’re supposed to say it; sleepily, with a mouth full of food, between laughters and in tears. Y/N saw the specks of brown in the amber colored lake that his eyes were and fell completely. Sirius saw it, James saw it, Lily saw it.
Even more when he turned to look down at her and wipe a bit of chocolate off her cheek, and she kept that look of utter adoration for him. “He’s gone” Lily mumbled to her husband. “She’s too” he agreed. Sirius smirked, getting up to get Harry to bed as he fell asleep on his uncle’s arms as the sun set.
James and Sirius were at the center of attention, regaling the group with a hilarious story from their time at school. Their voices were animated, and they gesticulated with enthusiasm, drawing everyone into their tale. Remus stood nearby, a mix of amusement and mild embarrassment evident on his face.
"And then, there was this one time at Hogwarts," James began, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "when we decided to prank the entire Slytherin common room! We turned all their robes into neon pink ones!"
Sirius chimed in, laughter bubbling in his voice. "Oh, it was epic! They all looked like walking flamingos! The look on their faces was priceless!"
Y/N was thoroughly entertained by the story, but she couldn't help but notice Remus's subtle blush. She leaned closer to him and whispered teasingly, "Remus, were you part of this grand pink robe conspiracy too?"
Remus grinned, shaking his head. "I plead the fifth," he replied, trying to hide his amusement. "Let's just say those were wild times, and I may or may not have been an innocent bystander."
Y/N laughed, enjoying the playful banter. She was captivated by the camaraderie and genuine friendship between the group. As the evening continued, she found herself drawn into more anecdotes and laughter, feeling a sense of warmth and acceptance in their company.
Remus's friends made her feel welcome and included, and she couldn't help but feel grateful for being a part of this close-knit circle, even if she didn't know the full extent of their world. The nerves that had accompanied her earlier had transformed into excitement and a genuine desire to create new memories with Remus and his friends.
The feeling was reciprocated. Remus felt, and not on mere theory; the moment Y/N excused herself to go to the bathroom, his best friends started gushing to him about the girl. "Moony, she's in love" Sirius said between incredulous and joyous laugh "Oh Pad-" "Mate, I'm telling you... she looks at you like you hung the bloody stars!" now said James, Lily nodding pridefully "She looks at you just how James looked at me back in the day".
And Merlin did he want to believe them! He truly, really did. But instead, there was this empty feeling on his chest. There was no way Y/N Y/L/N looked at him in the way James looked at Lily; Almost scared of the joy she brought to him, like that pain in his heart would end up killing him and he'd quite literally die a happy man. So, when Remus dropped her off at her flat and turned his head before she'd kiss him on the mouth, the void went deeper.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Y/N couldn't sleep that night. Her mind was restless, thoughts of Remus swirling in her head like a tempest. She tossed and turned, replaying the events of the evening over and over again, each memory etching itself into her heart. There was no denying it anymore; she was utterly and completely in love with him.
The realization hit her like a wave crashing onto the shore, powerful and unstoppable; she was head over heels for Remus Lupin.
The next day, Y/N couldn't concentrate on anything. Her mind kept drifting back to Remus, like she'd could easily find herself absentmindedly doodling hearts and his name on the margins of her notebook. She needed to tell him; she couldn't keep this to herself any longer.
In the late afternoon, she gathered her courage and dialed his number, her heart pounding in her chest as she waited for him to pick up. When he finally answered, his warm voice on the other end sent shivers down her spine.
"Hey, Remus," she began, trying to sound casual despite the turmoil inside her. "I was wondering if we could meet up later? There's something I want to talk to you about." Remus's response was filled with concern. "Of course, love. Is everything alright?" "Yes, everything's fine," she reassured him. "I just... I have something to tell you, something important."
He agreed to meet at their favorite cafe later that evening, and Y/N's heart fluttered with nervous excitement. The minutes leading up to their meeting felt like an eternity, but finally, the time came. When they sat down together, Y/N took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. Remus looked at her with those caring, gentle eyes, and she felt a rush of emotions wash over her.
"Remus," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "I don't even know where to start. Y-you've brought so much magic into my life. From the moment we met, I felt something special, something I couldn't quite put into words."
He listened intently, his gaze never leaving hers.
"I've never felt this way before," she continued, her cheeks flushing with emotion. "You're like a beautiful enigma, a captivating mystery that I can't get enough of. You make me laugh, you make me feel safe and cherished, and every moment with you is a treasure. You've shown me a kind of magic that I never knew existed, a magic that exists in the little things, the stolen glances, the shared laughter, and the way you hold my hand. It's like you've cast a spell on me, and I never want it to end."
Remus's eyes softened, and a tender smile graced his lips. "Y/N, you're the most incredible person I've ever met," he replied, his voice filled with emotion. "From the moment I saw your ink-stained hands, I knew you were something special. You've brought light into my life, and I can't believe that someone as amazing as you could feel this way about me."
He reached across the table and took her hand in his, their fingers interlocking like two puzzle pieces, finding their perfect fit.
"I'm not good with grand gestures or flowery words," he said, his voice a whisper. "But I can tell you this: I care about you deeply, more than I ever thought possible. You make me happy like I never imagined I'd could feel. I've fallen in love with you, Y/N, and I can't believe my luck."
Y/N's heart soared, tiny tears of joy welling up in her eyes. "Oh, Remus," she murmured, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm so in love with you too. You've shown me a kind of love I never knew existed, a love that feels like coming home. I cherish every moment with you, and I want to share my time with you, if you'll have me."
Without hesitation, Remus leaned across the table, closing the distance between them, and pressed a soft, tender kiss to her lips. It was a kiss filled with love and promise, sealing their feelings and intentions.
"I'd be honored to have you in my life, Y/N," he whispered against her lips. "You're my bit of magic in a world that can be harsh and uncertain, and I never want to let you go."
And so, in that cozy cafe, two souls found solace in each other's love. The world around them faded into the background as they basked in the enchantment of their newfound love, knowing that this kind of magic was unlike any other they had ever known. They had found something truly extraordinary in each other, a love that would stand the test of time and shine brighter than any star in the night sky.

𝙰𝚗𝚍 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚊𝚛𝚎..? #3 ⋆ Charles Leclerc
pairing: charles leclerc x reader
summary: in which the reader does not recognise the famous Monegasque Formula 1 driver; the very same one that was about to change her perspective on the sport and also her life.
— buckle up cos this is a long one yall…. a lil smau at the end? 👀
— you can read parts 1 & 2 here: #1 #2
You went on three more dates after the brunch date. You really enjoyed his company and agreeing to go for brunch with him was the best decision you've ever made.
Charles had popped the question on the third date and of course, you said yes. However, you still kept your relationship private but not secret. No one knew who he was dating and vice versa…. yet.
Today was your final paper for Uni. You had spent the last few weeks focused on studying so you couldn't meet Charles (and attend his races) as often as you wanted to but he was totally understanding and even had flowers delivered to your house to boost your morale.
You went to school with the notes you wrote clutched in your hands. You had a few hours to kill so you decided to have a light breakfast and head to the library to do last minute revisions with Emma.
The clock hits 1:30pm and all the students were gathered in the examination hall, seated in their respective places as the papers were being handed out. You turned to Emma who was seated a few seats diagonally behind you.
She shows a thumbs up and mouths 'good luck!' with a smile on her face.
You returned the gesture and then turn your attention back towards yourself.
Three hours later, you exited the exam hall and let out a sigh of relief. You took out your phone to text Charles, letting him know you were done with your final paper of the goddamn semester.
In the midst of typing, you bumped into someone.
"Oh god I'm so sor- Charles?!" You yelled out.
He laughs but was quick to shush you by covering your mouth, "Hi,"
You were shocked to see him as he was away for the British Grand Prix. You figured you had a few days left before he returns but as you just found out, he was back early.
You hugged him in joy and he embraces you in his arms.
"How was the paper?" He asks as he lets go, the two of you walking away.
"Good- but difficult. I think I'll do well," You hesitantly say.
His eyebrows furrow, "You think? Come on, don't say that! I know you'll do well,"
"Yeah? You think so?"
"Of course! You're my girl, there's nothing you can't do my love," He says as he kisses your forehead.
You smiled in response, feeling a little better.
"Let's go for dinner?"
It's like he was able to read your mind.
Fast forward, it was graduation. You did indeed do well. Your parents couldn't attend as they were miles away so they supported you via live stream. Charles however...

Monza.
Monza was a particularly important race; Charles loved the Monza GP as much as he loved his home race- it held a very special place in his heart.
This was your first time attending, the atmosphere of the tifosi’s was like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
You were with Emma in the Ferrari hospitality as Charles had paddock & VIP passes for the both of you. Of course, he couldn’t forget Emma. He said if it weren’t for her, the two of you wouldn’t have met.
The both of you were seated at the back of the garage with headphones on, focused on the race.
The race started off well. Charles was on pole, which was amazing, he even managed to maintain his position for the next 53 laps, keeping the two Mercedes drivers behind him at bay.
“Mercedes threw everything at him today- Charles Leclerc has coped brilliantly! He won in Spa, he wins in Monza!”
As soon as his car crosses the finish line and the checkered flag waves, you rushed over to the barricades, waiting for him.
As soon as he parks his car in the Parc Ferme, he rushes to the team donned in red.
He brushed past everyone as soon as he saw you at the front of the line. He runs over to you, immediately embracing you in a hug.
You hugged him back but was taken aback at his sudden action because your relationship hadn’t gone public yet. But today, Charles figured it was time the world knew.
You kissed the top of his helmet, afterwards pushing his visor up, eyes locked with the same set of green eyes you were first met with at the supermarket a year back. His eyes were squinting- he was smiling.
With his hands rested on your waist, he proceeds to place his forehead on yours, “Je t’aime. I love you. Je t’aime tellement. I love you so much.” He says loud enough so you could hear him over the screams and cheers.
You smiled. Your heart melts when the words escape his mouth because prior to this, the both of you hadn’t said your “I love you’s” yet.
“Take off your helmet,” You said and he quickly proceeded to do so.
You placed your hands on the side of his face bringing him in closer, kissing him. Once you let go, you said,
“Je t’aime aussi, Charles. I love you too, Charles.”

Birdie - Satoru Gojo | Chapter 13
words: 4,3k
summary: While everyone adored him, you stood apart in your feelings. It wouldn't be accurate to say you hated him, as “hate” was a strong word, rather, you harbored a profound dislike towards him. The problem was he knew that and his irritating presence seemed to persistently cling to you whenever he crossed your paths.
Now, you found yourself paired with him for your semester project, and the thought made you wish to hurl yourself out of the third-floor window. Three months of working alongside him loomed ahead. Adding to the discomfort, you were currently under the scrutiny of hundreds of eyes, each gaze feeling like a murder attempt. It seemed everyone coveted the opportunity to collaborate with Gojo Satoru, except for you.

At first I really thought it was going to be just 20 but as I kept writing chapters, more ideas came and we still have a lot unresolved things, so definitely Birdie will take a bit longer. “In love?” You questioned still resting your head on her legs.
Kyoto nodded with a smile. “Yes. The way you talked about him, it’s not a simple crush, you realize that right?” She asked.
Did you? Your heart accelerated in your chest, what you felt for Satoru was not a crush or that you simply liked him, were you in love with him? You sat on the bed, feeling a little dizzy from the sudden movement. And you took a deep breath.
“I need to talk with him and apologize for my reaction.” You tried to grab your phone but Kyoko took it from you.
“The fact that you’re in love with him, doesn’t mean what he did was right.” You nodded. “So don’t apologize for reacting the way you did, you were hurt and that’s okay. What you both need to do is talk things out and leave your boundaries cleare, that way things can work out.”
“Oh god Kyoko.” You throw yourself at her. “I have never been in love or even in a serious relationship, this is scary.”
She stroked your hair gently. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you will know what to do. But remember, don't apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong.” You slightly laughed. “And tell him, that if I find you once again crying I will kill him.”
“My best protector.” You hugged her.
“You know I am.” She hugged you back. “You were there for me when I was at my lowest and I also want to be always with you and take care of you, because you are my best friend.”
You felt your tears falling down your cheeks. There were not enough words to describe what Kyoko was to you and what it had meant to you that she came into your life. You have changed a lot since you met her and your world has also changed thanks to her. It really was one of the few good things you'd had for a long time, but now, that world of good things was slowly opening up and you just hoped it would keep opening up even more.
You felt your eyes closing little by little and how sleep subtly enveloped you, while you were still hugging Kyoko.
That night you dreamed. You were able to immerse yourself in a clear world, so much so that you could feel it as real. In this landscape, you found yourself on the shores of a calm lake, whose surface shone under the soft caress of the sunlight. A familiar warmth hugged you, it was the comforting embrace of your mother's smile, a beacon of love and security, that you had long lost. And in the midst of this environment, your attention was focused on a figure kneeling near you, holding with tender care a wounded bird in their hands. The scene unfolded with such clarity and emotion that it seemed more than just a dream, as if it were a memory that your mind had wanted to eliminate from your head.
As the morning light filtered through the curtains, you woke up. Doubt lingered in your mind, questioning the difference between reality and a dream. Was it really a product of the dreams or a forgotten fragment of your mind? Although the images in the dream had felt real, you had not been able to see that other person's face clearly. But what was that feeling of anguish that had settled in your chest? Why did you feel so extremely agitated?
“You up?” You heard Kyoko’s sleepy voice talking, she was stretching herself next to you.
“Yeah…” You smiled softly at her. “Thanks.” You whispered.
“Don’t say it.” She sat next to you. “I’m always here for you.” She gave you a small squish in the hand.
You nodded. “And I’m always here for you too.” You carefully rose from the comfort of your bed, feeling the stiffness in your muscles dissipate as you stretched your back. "I should start getting ready, I have class at 10." You commented.
Kyoko curled up under the covers and made a moan of reluctance. "Ugh, I just want to stay home all day." She wailed, burying her face in the pillows. “How about we skip class today?”
But you shook your head resolutely, dismissing the idea. "I have to go. I want to talk to Satoru, and if I don't show up, he might get the wrong idea. Communication is key if we want this relationship to work."
A soft smile appeared on Kyoko's lips as she looked at you in admiration. "I'm proud of you." She murmured, her voice filled with affection. “Let's go have breakfast.” With a sudden burst of energy, she jumped out of bed and took your hand, leading you into the kitchen to start the day with a shared meal.
While Kyoko busied herself preparing breakfast, you grabbed your cell phone and checked your latest notifications. There were no messages from Satoru and you understood that he was giving you the space and time you had requested. You felt grateful for his understanding.
Opening his chat, you took a look at the name you had assigned him and couldn't help but smile at how your relationship had taken a 180 degree turn in such a short time. You didn't want to lose what had just started by simply avoiding a small conversation that could clarify everything.
You to Satoru ✨
Can we talk before class today?
Placing your phone on the table, you welcomed the breakfast Kyoko had prepared for the both of you, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves at the prospect of the impending conversation with Satoru.
Kyoko, noticing the thoughtful expression on your face, asked softly. "Is everything okay?"
You nodded, offering a small smile. "Yeah, I was just thinking about talking to Satoru before class."
"Oh I see." Kyoko's eyes shone with understanding. "I'm sure everything will be fine."
You nodded again, appreciating Kyoko's supportive words. With every bite of breakfast, you found yourself mentally preparing for the conversation that awaited you. The need for clarity and openness with Satoru felt more pressing than ever.
After finishing breakfast, you organized the dishes together with Kyoko. Turning your head you noticed how the screen of your phone lit up. You nervously picked it up and checked what it was.
Satoru ✨
Alright, if you want I can pick you up.
You bite your thumb, hesitant about what to do, but finally decided to follow what your heart told you.
You to Satoru ✨
Sure, I still need to get ready but see you in 40 minutes?
Satoru ✨
Sure see you
With your heart pinching in your chest you locked the phone and walked back to the room. You leaned against your door and sighed deeply, trying to calm your agitated heart.
You wanted Satoru to get there as soon as possible, you wanted to see him and clarify everything. Your heart was shaking hard thinking about Kyoko's words. It wasn't a simple crush, you were fucking in love with Satoru Gojo and that overwhelmed you in too many ways.
First of all, the idea terrified you, the stories you knew about love never had a happy ending. Your father abandoned your mother when she was pregnant after swearing eternal love, your grandmother was also abandoned by your grandfather after he found another family.
You didn't want to have to suffer that abandonment yourself, you had already been alone too many times, you had lost too many people you loved. You didn't want Satoru to take your heart and somehow break it.
But on the other hand, it was exciting and it filled your heart with complete warmth. And was able to put a smile on your face.
Feeling the weight of fatigue pressing down on your limbs, you backed away from the door and headed towards your closet. As you moved around the room, the warmth of Tokyo spring filtered through the windows. Jackets and long pants gradually were becoming unnecessary as the temperature was starting to rise.
Looking at your reflection in the mirror, a thought crossed your mind, a memory of the time you wore Kyoko's dress and how Satoru had noticed despite your limited interactions. It was a small, seemingly insignificant moment, but it remained in your memory as a testament to Satoru's care. Smiling at the memory, you finished getting ready and waited for Satoru's call to light up your cell phone, now with a black screen.
Sitting on the edge of your bed, your heart raced with anticipation and nerves tightened in your chest. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly until the familiar melody of his phone's ringtone broke the silence, lighting up the room with Satoru's name displayed on the screen: "Satoru ✨.”
“Satoru…” You greeted, your voice betraying a hint of nerves.
"Birdie..." His normally calm and confident voice wavered slightly. "I'm outside. If you're not ready, I can..."
"No." You interrupted. "I am. I'll be there in ten seconds."
"Alright." He murmured softly, the tension was palpable even through the phone.
With a quick exhale, you ended the call and got out of bed, a rush of adrenaline spurring you to get moving. Grabbing your bag, you briefly said goodbye to Kyoko before stepping out into the sunlight. As you walked out the door, your eyes met Satoru's figure leaning casually against his sleek black car, his signature dark sunglasses hiding his gaze.
With each step towards Satoru, something tightened in your chest, making it difficult to swallow the saliva that was building up in your mouth. When he heard your footsteps, Satoru looked up, and at that moment, your eyes met his.
A surge of electricity seemed to run through your entire being as his piercing blue eyes, the ones you loved so much, met yours. It was as if time slowed down, the world around you fading into insignificance as you drowned in the intensity of that shared gaze.
In that fleeting moment, everything else faded away: the sounds of the bustling city, the warmth of the sun on your skin, leaving you alone with Satoru.
When his eyes held yours, you felt a sense of calm wash over you, as if his gaze alone had the power to anchor you in the tumultuous sea of emotions swirling inside you.
“Hey.” He greeted you softly.
“Hi…” You tried to greet him in the same softly way, but somehow your voice came out shaky.
For a moment, silence enveloped them both, interrupted only by the sound of the city of Tokyo getting into motion that spring morning.
Breaking the silence, Satoru pointed towards his car with a subtle nod. "We should …?"
Nodding, you got into the familiar car. As I sat in the car next to him, the engine whirred to life. You pressed your hands against your knees and let out the air accumulated in your lungs.
“Satoru…” You began but your voice was left hanging in the air when Satoru talked.
“I’m sorry…” He began, you saw how he held the wheel stronger than before. “I’m really sorry and I don’t know how to begin this. And I don’t want to make excuses because what I did was unacceptable, I crossed some boundaries that I shouldn’t have crossed and all because I thought I was doing it to help you but the truth is that I only hurt you and invaded your personal space.” He took a small break. “I would understand if you don’t want to talk or even see me again, I’m an asshole and I fucked up badly.”
The car fell silent, his eyes were fixed on the road and yours on his face. “Can you pull over?” You said.
Satoru simply nodded and in silence he pulled over, parking the car in a free space. His eyes were still looking to the front, not looking at you.
“Satoru… could you look at me.” And with puppy eyes he looked at you. “Yeah, what you did wasn’t okay and it hurt me. And I’m glad you know it was wrong and hopefully you don’t make that mistake again.” Satoru nodded in silence. “But…” You paused and looked at him, carefully and feeling the nervousness and shyness take over your body, you held his face. “I don’t want to lose this, I don't want to lose us.” You shyly smiled. “I’m glad you acknowledge what you did wrong but I don’t want this to break up.” His eyes were fixed on you, carefully watching you.
“Are you sure?” He swallowed. “It’s okay if you don’t want to see me again, I can… bare with it.” You smiled seeing his poor intent of lying.
“Could you?” You smiled.
And he shook his head. “I wouldn’t.” He got closer to you and rested his forehead on your shoulder. “Thank you…” He whispered. “I know I’m an asswhole and that I’m annoying and all that.”
“You are my all that.” You smiled, caressing his white hair.
“Let’s skip classes.” He said against your skin. “Let’s go to
“Can I kiss you?” He said looking at your lips and then up at your eyes.
“Yes…” You whispered before feeling the warmth of his lips on yours.
The kiss was a tender hug, soft and delicate, as if Satoru was afraid of breaking you or hurting you. His lips meeting yours with a soft caress, transmitting a silent promise of protection and tenderness. Yet despite the gentle touch, you felt a surge of warmth radiate from within you, filling you with a feeling of fullness you had never known before.
In that moment, you found yourself craving more of his touch, hungry for the warmth of his lips against yours. His hesitation only fueled your desire, igniting a fire within you.
As the kiss deepened, you surrendered to the sensation, losing yourself in the tender embrace of his lips. Every brush of skin against skin sent a jolt of electricity coursing through your veins, igniting a passion that burned hotter with each passing moment.
You felt alive, consumed by the intoxicating allure of his presence. It was a moment of pure happiness, where time seemed to stop and the world faded away, where it was just the two of you.
You felt an avalanche of emotions cascading through you, a mix of desire, and vulnerability.
When the kiss finally broke, a breathless moment remained between you, your labored breaths mixing together to form one. Satoru's gaze, now softened but full of intensity, reflected the whirlwind of emotions swirling within you.
With a calming breath, your voice was a mere whisper against the growing sound of your racing heart. "Satoru..."
He met your gaze intently, his eyes searching yours for the words that threatened to leave your lips.
"I want to meet you." You confessed, your voice shaking slightly with vulnerability. "Everything about you."
A slight smile appeared at the corners of Satoru's lips. "And I want to show you." He responded, raising his hand to gently caress your face.
Under his soft touch you closed your eyes and let yourself be caressed, you let yourself be loved for the first time in a long time. He left a small kiss on your lips before turning back to the wheel.
“Let’s go to the beach the day after tomorrow.” Satoru smiled at you and you smiled back at him.
“Why then?” You wondered looking at him.
“Oh I heard the weather will be good then.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“Okay…” You smiled. “It’s a date then?”
“Yeah…” He softly whispered. “Thank you birdie.”
You shook your head and your shoulders. “You need to stop thanking me Satoru. Now let’s go to class.”
Satoru nodded and started the car. With a smile on your lips, you felt your heart beating steadily again, and the cloud that had been lingering in your head disappeared completely. The road became familiar, and soon Satoru parked the car in front of your college.
You hesitated for a second as you got out of the car and walked next to him, but Satoru grabbed your hand with a reassuring smile. You felt everyone's eyes on you and heard the whispers as they commented on the scene unfolding before them. Satoru walked proudly, holding your hand, and didn't let go until you reached your class. That day you weren’t sharing any classes so that was your goodbye spot.
As you approached the classroom door, he gave your hand a gentle squeeze. "I'll see you after class, okay?"
You nodded, feeling a surge of confidence from his support. "Okay."
He leaned in, giving you a quick kiss on the cheek. "Good luck in class, birdie."
You watched as he walked away. Turning to enter the classroom, you noticed a few lingering glances and whispers from your classmates, but the warmth of Satoru's presence lingered with you, making it easier to ignore them.
Taking your seat, you focused on the lecture. As you left your first class, you were greeted by the smiling face of Kyoko, who was waiting for you leaning against one of the walls outside your classroom. With a grin, she approached you.
"And well? Have you already spoken?" She asked eagerly, falling into step beside you. "C'mon, tell me!"
You nodded, a smile playing on your lips as you recounted the recent events. "We fixed everything, and in two days, we're going to the beach.” You announced, unable to contain your excitement. "As a date."
Kyoko's eyes widened in excitement, and she let out a delighted squeal, clapping her hands together enthusiastically. "Oh my gosh, that's amazing!" She exclaimed, unable to contain her joy. "I'm so happy for you!"
You couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, feeling grateful to have such a supportive friend by your side. Kyoko kept on jumping around winning the curious eyes of everyone surrounding both of you.
“You know what it means right?” She smirked.
“What?” You said with a funny tone on your voice.
“Double dates!” She made a small dance. “Oh what could we do? We could go to Kyoto or Okinawa during the summer break!”
“A girl works you know?”
“And that girl deserves some vacations you know?” She replied back. “C’mon imagine expending some days in Okinawa, the four of us, on the beach.” She started daydreaming and you rolled your eyes. “I’m sure you want to see your man shirtless and more.”
“Geez Kyoko.” You rolled your eyes.
She laughed and followed your steps. “Sorry, sorry but you know?” You looked at her. “Suguru has his whole arm tattooed, ugh when I tell you that is so sexy, when he is without...”
“Please Kyoko, I don't want any more information about your private relationship with Suguru.”
“Okay, I will stop.” She laughed. “But hey!” You looked at her from over your shoulder. “I’m so happy for you.”
“And I’m happy for you.” You smiled back at her.
“Can’t believe we used to think they were dating.” Kyoko recalled the time when you both thought Satoru and Suguru were dating and you chuckled at it.
Satoru Gojo POV
“Did you fix it?” Shoko raised her eyebrow.
“I did, we are good okay?” He sighed. “I won’t fuck things up like that again.”
“Well done man.” Suguru raised his thumb nodding his head. “So what now?” He raised his eyebrows while taking a sip of his tea.
“We are going on a date in two days.” Satoru smiled with confidence.
“Are you planning on asking her to be your girlfriend?” Shoko questioned.
“I… I guess so.” He shrugged.
Shoko looked at Satoru and then at Suguru. “What’s up with him?”
Suguru shook his head with a smile. “He has never done that before.”
“What?” Shoko gasped surprised. “But I have seen you dating before.”
“Yeah, but it was different. We hung around, had fun and I guess we assumed we were in a relationship.” Satoru moved his hands around, trying to explain himself. “But I never sat down and asked anyone to date.”
“And you are nervous.” Shoko mischievously smiled. “Oh my god!” She laughed. “The great Satoru Gojo is nervous.”
“Shoko shut up.” He said embarrassed.
“No, no, I really like this.” She laughed. “Oh god I’m so happy to see this side of you.”
“Shoko enough.” Suguru laughed.
“Suguru admit it, you are also loving it.” She smirked.
“Don’t Suguru.” He warned him.
“I have to say it, I like seeing this side of you.” Suguru laughed alongside his friend.
“You know, I hate both of you.” Satoru stood up. “You.” He pointed at Suguru. “We have practice so get your ass up if you don’t want to get scolded.”
Suguru chuckled and stood up. “See you Shoko.”
“See ya!” Shoko waved her hand at her two friends.
Satoru and Suguru walked side by side. With their training backpacks slung over their shoulders, Satoru and Suguru took giant steps towards the basketball court. The familiar, slightly musty smell of the gym greeted them as they entered, a nostalgic reminder of the countless hours they spent training there. The freshmen were already working hard, performing exercises as Coach Yaga's booming voice echoed through the space, urging them to try harder.
Satoru and Suguru exchanged amused glances, their eyes reflecting shared memories of their own experiences as freshmen. They remembered well the intense sessions and the coach's unwavering expectations.
"It seems like yesterday we were the ones who were yelled at." Satoru reflected, with a smile on his lips.
"Yeah." Suguru agreed, chuckling. “Coach Yaga hasn’t changed in the slightest. He's still as intense as ever."
As they walked towards the court, Yuji greeted them, putting aside his training, earning a shout from the coach.
Coach Yaga turned his head and saw them. "Gojo, Geto, stop standing there and get to work! Warm up with the others!"
Satoru waved playfully, earning a quizzical look from the trainer, and joined the exercises with Suguru at his side.
“Captain Gojo!” A voice resounded in the distance.
Satoru looked up to see Haibara's figure running towards him, followed closely by Nanami. Upon reaching them, Haibara knelt before Satoru, his expression serious and apologetic.
"I'm so sorry if by not keeping my mouth shut I've ruined your relationship, Captain Gojo!" Haibara blurred, his voice filled with remorse.
Satoru looked embarrassed to the side of him, looking at Suguru, who was trying to suppress a laugh. "Haibara, please get up." Satoru said, his tone soft but firm.
Haibara did as Satoru asked, slowly getting up but still looking worried.
"Nothing has happened." He tried to calm him down, Satoru. "And in any case, it would be my fault if the relationship had gone sour. Birdie and I worked it out." I gave Haibara a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “The truth is, you did well Haibara. I'm sorry for putting you in that situation.” This time it was Satoru who bowed slightly.
Haibara smiled at Satoru. “It’s okay captain, I’m glad you two fixed everything.”
“So you and the girl you were with the other day at the club are finally dating?” Yuji exclaimed. “Oh she was really nice and funny.”
Satoru caught a bit trying to keep himself calm. “Not yet.” Satoru murmured.
“Oh but they were really nicely kissing and holding hands after getting out of the car.” A voice spoke.
Satoru rolled his eyes upon recognizing the voice and looked at him indifferently. “Sukuna, why do you care about what I do?”
Sukuna laughed as he approached the group. “Excuse me Gojo, it's hard not to see you.”
Satoru sighed and rested his hand on his hip. "What are you doing here? "It's been more than a year since he expelled you from the club."
“Can't I come see my favorite nephew?” He tilted his head, directing his gaze to Yuji.
Yuji rolled his eyes. “I didn’t want to see you here.”
“Neither did I want to come here brat, but your father called me and told me to hang you this.” He said throwing him a bag. “Anyways Gojo is good to see you.” He smirked leaving the group.
“Sometimes I wonder how you two are family.” Yuta mumbled.
“Don’t remind me.” Yuji protested. “He is my uncle but we are so close in age that sometimes he is like an annoying older brother.”
"Yuji, do you know if Sukuna has played on any team again?" Satoru asked, still staring at the door where he had left.
Yuji shook his shoulders. “I think so, but I'm not sure. He never tells me anything.”
“Captain, are you worried that Sukuna has been signed to another team?” Megumi asked.
“A little, little he cared about the sanction they gave him last year when he broke Kamo’s fingers from Kyoto college.” Satoru sighed and looked at Suguru. “I'm afraid he won't care again and this time he'll do something to one of the team.”
“He probably still has a lot of resentment from last year.” Suguru remembered this time and Satoru nodded heavily.
“Well…” Satoru stretched himself. “We will handle it once it comes, right?” He smiled. “Besides, we are the best. There is nothing to worry about.”
Suguru chuckled and shook his head. "You're right. Now let's train guys." He said he and everyone got moving.
But Satoru stayed in his place still feeling a little anguish in his stomach. Shaking his head, he walked onto the basketball court and began training with the rest of his teammates.
Final notes: Birdie and Satoru fixing everything, bc communication is the key. It always frustrates me when I read in a book or a series how things get complicated between the characters due to lack of communication, that's why I didn't want to prolong the small conflict between them and have them fix things like adults, talking.

Want Doesn't Equal Need
Pairing: Wanda Maximoff x Natasha Romanoff
Word Count: 4,854
Warnings: Unspecified age gap (Nat is older), heavy makeout session.
Summary: Nat and Wanda have been going on strong for over a month, but will a little secret ruin what they have?
Part One Part Three
A/N: i wrote this all within the last 30 hours :)
Wanda groaned at the sound of her alarm, eyes slitting open as she blearily tried to turn it off before it woke the twins. The chances of it waking them was slim: the phone was maybe half a foot away from her and on the third lowest volume. If motherhood had taught her one thing, it was that you could never be too quiet.
She lifted her head just enough to see her babies, making sure they were still asleep and breathing before rolling onto her back. They had been changed fed just over half an hour ago, so they wouldn’t need to be fed for a while, but it never hurt to check. If one look was enough to soothe at least a little of her anxiety, so be it.
The sound of sharp cries pulled her out of sleep, reaching for her phone. She did a double take as she realized it wasn’t her alarm and instead was the twins, nearly shooting out of bed to attend to them.
“Good morning.” Wanda mumbled through a yawn, flashing a tired smile at the oldest of the twins as she leaned over to pick him up. It hadn’t taken long to learn which cry was who’s and what it meant, easily being able to tell the twins apart at three months old. She gave the same greeting to the younger as she picked him up, easily falling into their morning routine.
While it was out of the norm for either of them to be crying before she was awake, it wasn't impossible and she merely shrugged it off. She had read somewhere babies had an internal clock, though it wouldn’t develop fully for a few more months. Whatever it may be, she was glad the three of them had fallen into a schedule, well, whatever you could consider a schedule for newborns.
“Just give me a second here, Tommy.” The brunette spoke tiredly, sitting against her mountain of pillows with her feet planted on the mattress, knees in the air. Billy was laid on her thighs as he was the calmer of the two at the moment, needing her free hand to take her shirt and bra off. While feeding them simultaneously had proven to be a hassle multiple times, it had also proven to be the most effective method of handling twins as a single mother.
"I know you’re hungry, bud.” Wanda rocked him as best as she could, transferring him to her left arm. Neither of the boys needed help latching, hadn’t for upwards of two months, but it was still easier to hold whoever needed to start nursing first in her non-dominant arm and then hold the second with her dominant arm.
“See? You’re okay, bubs.” The student murmured softly, splitting her attention between the two as she picked up Billy, situating him on her right side with a soft sigh. She leaned her head back, letting her eyes flutter shut while the twins ate. She didn’t know why she was so tired all of a sudden. While she hadn’t gotten a full night of sleep in months, the twins had been sleeping exceptionally well the last few nights, meaning she too had been actually sleeping.
Obviously she knew she would be playing catch up with her sleep; the twins had just turned three months just over a week ago, though she knew she was far from any of them sleeping through the night anytime soon. Still, she had easily slept over six hours last night, the most she had gotten on a school night since starting fall semester. Whatever it may be, she was tempted to fall back asleep and wait for her second alarm, even though it wouldn’t be more than five minutes at the most.
“Wanda. Are you up?” The pounding on her bedroom door had her wincing, begrudgingly opening her eyes. She had all of ten seconds to pull her comforter over herself, well as much as she could, before her door was shoved open, Pietro standing in her doorway. He was dressed in shorts and a muscle tank, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe of her room. She was sure he’d never learn how to wait before barging in. It was a brother thing, she supposed.
“I am now.” Wanda met his eyes with a straight face, clearly unamused. It wasn’t because she was feeding the twins: she’d be more concerned if he asked her to cover herself up because he was uncomfortable, with how many times he had walked into her room without so much as knocking. He, at the very least, had learned to do that much.
“Am I watching them today or not?” Pietro huffed, rolling his eyes. Sassy man apocalypse. It was unfortunate, really. He was such a good brother, she didn’t know why he had to be an asshole sometimes. It was a brother thing she supposed.
“You said you would?” Wanda fixed him with a stare, shaking her head just slightly. School had started a month and a half ago; why was he questioning the schedule they had made? Granted, she had to remind him everyday he watched them. Whatever. He was the only one she truly trusted watching the twins and was beyond grateful, even if he could be the most annoying human. She’s sure he cries more than the twins combined.
“You weren’t responding to my texts.” He shrugged, biting out of an apple that seemed to appear out of thin air in his hand. He did that a lot. Which was weird considering how Wanda notices just about everything. Like how both of his socks had holes and he wouldn’t buy another pair because they were ‘still good’. His words, not hers.
“What time is it?” Wanda couldn’t exactly look at her phones, the twins still in her arms. That was weird, though. Wanda was almost always up earlier than him, especially after having the twins. She liked to joke that they were her own personal alarm clock; waking her up at hours that Pietro considered bedtime. Pietro just said she was getting old and her jokes were getting lame.
“Like… nine.” He looked at his phone, turning it towards her. It was two minutes before nine. Fuck. She was supposed to be up by eight and leaving by nine thirty. She was so fucked. Her alarm went off. But that was the first alarm, not her second one.
“Fuck. Are you- you’re joking.” Wanda sat up, wincing slightly as the twins didn’t appreciate the sudden change in position. She mumbled a soft sorry to them, her comforter pooling around her stomach. She hated her stomach. Didn’t want to think about how disgusting it had become after giving birth. She’d do it again if it meant having her babies. “Why would I-”
“Get out! I- oh my god.” Wanda was vaguely aware of the fact that she had gone to bed without shorts on. It had become more common since she started seeing Nat, a side effect of falling asleep after a single orgasm, she was sure. That and she didn’t anticipate her brother waking her up. “I don’t have clothes on!”
Pietro made some sort of barfing sound before turning, closing the door behind her. Realistically, there was nothing she could do until the twins were done eating. She still stood up, using her foot to find the pair of leggings she had worn the day before. Nat had said they made her ass look fat, that she needed to buy more flair leggings because there was just something about them. She had also said her tits looked good in a nursing bra. Wanda wasn’t so sure about that.
It took longer than she would’ve like to find them, flinging them onto her bed before searching for some kind of top. Tommy had stopped eating and had started fussing. She couldn’t do much but rock and shush him. She caught herself in the mirror, stopping almost immediately. She had no time to do her hair or makeup.
“C’mon Billy. I need you to hurry up.” Wanda glanced at the younger of the twins, her eyes flitting between the two. It was a habit of hers. Making sure they were both here. That they were actually hers.
As soon as he finished she was burping them, standing topless in the middle of her room. It didn’t take long before they were both situated in their bassinets, both fed and happy. Wanda was neither of those things. She felt like one of those old shows where they ran around like a madman trying to find something. She was running around like a madman trying to figure out what she was doing. She pulled on her pants and a sweatshirt, hair tie held in her mouth as she roughly brushed her hair back into a snarly ponytail. She’d fix it later.
“I didn't have time to pump, so this will have to do.” Wanda was laying the twins in Pietro’s arms before taking two frozen baggies out of the freezer, running the faucet while she got her backpack ready. She was throwing random things in there; notebooks, her laptop, a random bar sitting on the island. A bowl was filled with warm water, the two baggies tossed in there before she put them in the fridge. “You know where all their stuff is. Milk is in the fridge.”
Wanda shrugged her jacket on, pulling her backpack on after and her hair out of them, walking towards the living room. She kissed both of the babies foreheads, telling them both she loved them before she was pulling on her shoes and out the door. It was 9:38. She’d make it on time. Hopefully.

Wanda knocked lightly at the door, a nervous smile pulling at her lips caught between her teeth. She had an hour before her next class and while she’d normally eat lunch, she had an appetite for something other than eating. She wasn’t sure what she was doing. Apologizing, maybe. Begging if called for. She wouldn’t be against it if it was asked.
“Come in.” The professor’s voice flitted through the door, a familiar coolness she had become accustomed to. The brunette took a deep breath before pushing the door open, gauging the reaction of the teacher. The woman’s face morphed into something between surprise and happiness. That was a good sign. Wanda shut the door behind her, slowly approaching the desk. Cautiously.
Wanda smiled as the woman pushed her chair out from the desk, all but pouncing on her. She wasn’t even fully straddling the woman before she was kissing her, attempting to thread her fingers through red hair. Of course this was the one day the redhead wore her hair in a bun.
“Good afternoon to you too.” Natasha spoke slowly, a certain rasp accompanying her tone. It only made Wanda want her more, fully settling into her lap and attaching her lips to the others once again. She didn’t know why she was so needy all of a sudden, wanting nothing more than to have hot office sex with the woman, no cares about the outside world.
“Less talking, more kissing.” Wanda mumbled as she trailed her lips down the redhead’s neck. It was a mix between kissing, biting and sucking, beyond sure she would leave bruises. She smirked smugly, knowing Nat would have to fumble with foundation before the meeting or walk out of it with a bruised neck. Both options sounded amazing to her.
“I saw you two days ago-” Nat was cut off by Wanda kissing her hard, their lips smacking. The brunette ground against her pelvis, tugging the redhead’s hands onto her waist. For as touchy as she was when they were at her house, she was lacking greatly all of a sudden.
“Two days too many.” The student pulled back just slightly, fixing the woman with a stare. She wanted Nat to get the hint and, at the very least, touch her. A quickie would be even better. That made her stomach drop, barely able to hold back a whine at the thought.
“What happened to no sex in the office?” Natasha questioned with that damn eyebrow raised. That alone had Wanda nearly begging for more. She ground against the redhead again, delighted when the woman met her. Nat’s hands slowly crawled to the bottom of her bra, sending a chill down her spine. This was going to be good.
“Don’t care.” Wanda muttered, surging forward to kiss the woman again. She moaned into her mouth, Nat’s lips beginning to move against hers. Her hands returned to her bun, whining as she tugged just slightly.
“Or,” Natasha dragged the word out as she grabbed the hair at the back of the brunette’s head, pulling Wanda with little difficulty off of her neck, “You’re trying to distract me so that I wouldn't notice that you were late this morning?” Wanda’s face blushed a bright red, her swollen lips and dazed look only adding to Nat’s delight. Wanda was easy to fluster. A touch here, a glance there, a sneaky text during class when Wanda wasn’t even supposed to be on her phone. It was probably a kink with how much pride she took in seeing the girl blush. She was too busy to care.
“Oh.” And somehow her blush deepened, her lips pulling up in that small embarrassed smile she did, her teeth tugging her bottom lip into her mouth. While making out had been her tactic to make Nat forget about it, she was beyond hopeful Nat wouldn’t have remembered this morning at all. Clearly though, much like everything else in her life, that didn’t work. “No?”
“Is that an answer or a question?” Nat had long ago let go of her hair, her hands settling back onto the girl's thighs with an eyebrow raised. Wanda pouted, whining slightly as the redhead’s fingers began to dance against the skin. It felt pathetic; whimpering on some woman’s lap because they weren’t actively making out, but she hadn’t exactly made out with someone other than Nat in months. It wasn’t her fault she was high and dry.
“Baby.” Wanda whined, moving her hands up the woman’s shoulders and neck to cup her cheeks, the tips of her fingers digging softly into her hairline. She knew Nat held a lot of tension in her temples, having seen her hold her head during class damn near daily and especially after anything loud. Nat had mentioned something about migraines in passing and Wanda had encouraged she get it checked, but Nat only brushed her off, stating it was her ‘old age’ getting to her. “I didn’t mean to, okay?”
“That doesn’t excuse the fact that you were late.” Nat’s tone softened, her eyes shifting between the brunette’s as sympathy washed over her features. Wanda looked genuinely sorry, like she had some reason as to why she walked in over twenty minutes late.
“I know. I just-” Wanda sighed, looking past the redhead as her vision became blurry. Her hands returned to the woman’s hair, running the tips of her fingers down the back of her head, something she did with the twins. At lot of her coping mechanisms had stemmed from things she did with them. It was funny, how they were what saved her and continue to do so.
“Hey, why the tears, love?” And like that, she had ruined the mood. She was good at that. She only shook her head, not able to look at the redhead with the way her eyes were filled with sympathy. Nat treated her too well. She didn’t deserve how well Nat treated her.
“I overslept and then my brother, and the twins, and I still left early enough to get here but there wasn’t any parking and I had to park a block away even though I pay how much for a parking pass and-” Wanda cut herself off with a gasp, roughly shoving the palms into her eyes to try and stop her tears. It of course didn’t work, no matter how much she wishes it did. She could hardly look at Nat, too caught up in her flustered morning recap. “And people walk so fucking slow and take up thr entire goddamn hallway and I can’t pass them so of course I walk in and everybody has to look at me like I’m some kind of terrible person and they’re not wrong bu-”
“Wanda, Wanda, calm down, baby.” Natasha was wiping her tears, when had she started crying, gently shaking both of their heads. She pressed their lips together just barely, watching as the brunette’s eyes fluttered shut. The redhead was so gentle. It was a stark contrast to how she was in class; mean and cold turning into gentle and warm. Wanda practically melted into her, her forehead tipping forward until it was touching the older woman’s.
“You need to take a deep breath, Wanda. It’s okay, okay? We all have our days and yes, it’s frustrating and beyond irritating, but we need to not get so worked up over it, yeah? It’s a pain in the ass. Besides, it’s better than missionary.” Nat rubbed her thumbs over the pads of her cheeks, talking slowly and without judgment. Wanda knew this wasn’t the first time the woman had calmed down someone from spiraling, having been in the same situation at least once a week. And yet, the redhead stayed. “But you-” Wanda’s chuckle was watery, the brunette pulling back and shaking her head as she dragged the heel of her hand against her cheeks.
“I was only teasing.” Natasha chuckled back as she reached for a tissue, handing it to the younger. Wanda turned away as she blew her nose, the professor’s hand almost immediately rubbing up and down her back. The brunette dropped the kleenex in the trash under the woman’s desk, a pout on her face. She wiggled in the redhead’s arms until she was under her chin, pushing out a breath of hot air against her chest. “Fuck you.”
“Oh, I intend to.” Nat’s hands crawled up her back, easily unhooking her bra. Wanda gasped quietly, pressing a kiss against the woman’s collarbone before pulling her head back. Nat had that damn eyebrow raised, almost as if she were challenging Wanda. And Wanda was not about to back down. She dropped her hands onto the woman’s shoulders, meeting her halfway with open mouthed kisses. It was all teeth, pure adrenaline coursing through their bodies.
“And I like missionary.” Wanda used her thumbs to turn her professor’s face up, her own smirk pulling at her lips as she forced them apart. It was all she said before her thumbs vanished under the woman’s shirt, pulling the straps of her bra up and letting go at the same time as she nipped at the woman’s chin.
“You little shit.” Natasha pushed them on the chair until the brunette’s back was against the desk, her mouth opening with a slightly pained gasp. The redhead countered the brunette’s action by sliding her hands around to cup her breasts, leaning forward to kiss her again. Their tongues easily slid across each other’s, matching sounds of want echoing between them. It was fast and sloppy, their bodies moving together in sync as they ground against each other, all wanton and needy.
The door rattling against a heavy knocking had them stopping, each woman panting. “What the fuck?” Wanda pulled away from Nat, staring at her with wide and accusatory eyes. She had checked Nat’s schedule prior to showing up unannounced, knowing for a fact the woman had nothing going on for another hour, when Wanda’s final class of the day started. God, she hated how much that made her sound like a stalker. And obsessive. She wasn’t sure which was worse. Either way, no one should’ve been knocking like they had some sort of appointment because as far as she was concerned, they didn’t.
“Don’t look at me like that.” Nat hissed, removing her hands from under the girls shirt. She didn’t move more than that, keeping Wanda on her lap as they both waited in silence. There was a chance it was some student that, like Wanda, had showed up without an appointment, but Nat knew that if they didn’t say anything, the chances of them leaving were higher than not.
“Knock knock!” A clearly feminine voice fluttered through the door with another light knock, a familiar warmth that both women knew. It forced them into action; Wanda stumbling off of Nat’s lap while pulling her shirt down, awkwardly shoving her bra to cup her breasts instead of Nat’s hands, while Nat rubbed the lipstick off of her skin, fixing her own clothes and posture from where she was sat. “One moment!”
Wanda had just enough of a mind to drag her backpack from where it was dropped next to her, pulling her laptop from her bag. “Are you fucking kidding me?!” Wanda muttered while logging in, attempting to brush her hair out. It was a lost mess, her soft waves turning snarly.
“You think I knew someone was going to show up?” Nat muttered back, reaching across her desk to rub at Wanda’s own lipstick. She’s sure it was as smudged as hers, though she was hoping that the low light of the lamps in her office would somehow hide that. Wanda shook her hand away, dragging the wrist of her sweatshirt across her mouth, wiping away any leftover makeup. The door was opening in all but two seconds, a tall brunette woman impatiently pushing through the doorway.
“Oh! I didn’t know you were meeting with someone! I’ll only be a few.” The brunette returned the woman’s smile, though how genuine it was was up for debate. Wanda could vaguely place the woman’s voice. She definitely knew it, from where though, she was unsure.
“What can I do for you, Harkness?” Natasha gave the woman a faux smile, not catching the slight flinch the youngest of the three made at the mention of her name, her attention fully on the older woman. Agatha Harkness was the last person she wanted to see after making out with girlfriend. Fuck that, she didn’t want to see her at all.
“I was just looking to go over the meeting outline, in private.” Wanda was unsure of whether or not Agatha knew it was her. If she did, the weird sappiness in her tone was definitely meant to be some kind of retaliation for withdrawing from her class a month and a half before finals, itf it wasn’t… If it wasn’t, then she didn’t know. Either way, she was not about to deal with her. Not here and not now.
“Of course, let me just finish up with Wanda he-” Nat cleared her throat, gesturing to the younger before clasping her hands. They made eye contact for what felt like the first time in hours, Nat’s nonchalant demeanor a stark contrast to Wanda’s panicked state. The redhead almost looked like she didn’t know what to say, her mouth open once as Wanda shook her head.
“That’s okay, I’m just gonna-” Wanda closed her laptop with a slam, shoving it into her backpack as fast as she could. She needed to be out of that classroom as soon as possible, no questions asked. She had no idea how long until her class started, nor did she care, focused on getting out.
“Are you sure you don’t want to-” Nat cut her off with, what seemed to be, a genuine question, standing just slightly with a hand held out, but Wanda only shook her head as she stood, slinging her backpack over her shoulder. She was cut off by the eldest, though, an overdramatic shocked gasp pulling both of their eyes to her.
“Wanda! It’s so good to see you again!” And that sickeningly sweet tone was back, some twisted grin shining on her face. It made Wanda’s stomach churn. The woman practically rushed up to her, taking her into her arms like a mother who had lost and then found their child. It makes her heart hurt for her own babies. Her face was all but shoved between the woman’s tits, a move she was sure Agatha was doing on purpose. She had always been like that. She waited until Nat spoke to pull away as the eldests arms held her in place, though she didn’t get far as Agatha wrapped an arm around her, her fingers curling into the bottom of her ponytail.
“You two know each other?” Natasha sounded shocked, like she didn’t know of the rumors flying around the department about Wanda. More specifically, about Wanda and Agatha. It was unlikely, though the confused look shining through her nonchalant stance had Wanda questioning her. If anything, she was praying Nat didn’t know what had happened. And from their many, many chats, she didn’t.
“Know?! Honey, Wanda was only my best student last semester before she dropped out for personal reasons.” Wanda felt like some kind of doll; Agatha’s hand petting the nape of her neck and down her back, a fake look of despair thrown on her face. She felt like a trophy, like Agatha was flaunting her for her own sick fantasy. It’s not like that was far off: Agatha had told her she had been her most willing student in years.
“It was a shame, really. Not getting to teach your star pupil anymore. She is looking quite better now, though, wouldn’t you say, superstar?” And now both of the women’s attention was on her, a look filled with expectation mirrored on each other’s faces. They each were expecting something different, though. Nat looked like she wanted to know what had happened, like she needed to protect Wanda from… whatever. No protection now, Wanda thought bitterly. Agatha… Agatha was expecting a reason. A reason for dropping out, for giving up, for acting like nothing had happened between them.
"Totally.” Wanda mumbled, pinching the insides of her wrists. She couldn’t handle this. Not today, at least. Maybe not ever. She needed Agatha to stop touching her hair, for Nat to stop looking at her like she was some kind of victim, for herself to stop believing she could keep running and not be dragged back down. The chances of any of the three happening were close to zero.
“You know, we could always use more students in Art History in the United States. I don’t mean to be a brag, but I hear the unit on the 1600’s tends to be a favorite.” She was lying. Wanda knew. Nat chuckled with the woman, but Wanda knew what joining her class entailed. Knew she’d be cornered with no way out. She wasn’t letting that happen again.
“I’ll think about it, but I gotta g-” So she lied back, taking a step forward to finally get away from the woman’s claws. And they were claws, with how sharp she liked to keep her nails, there was no way she hadn’t accidentally purposefully drawn blood with them. She was looking at Nat for any way out, though the redhead looked like she was enjoying Wanda's struggle, like she and Agatha had planned this.
“Why so soon? We’re only just catching up, toots!” Strike three for that damn sugary sweetness that Wanda knew was fake. She shakes her head, her vision slowly becoming wet. Why was she going to start crying? Couldn’t she have control over something? It didn’t help that her chest felt like it was going to rip apart if she took a breath that was too big.
“You can stay, Wanda. I’m sure Agatha only needs a few things cleared up.” Natasha smiled at her, rounding her desk to place a hand on her shoulder. Wanda all but shrugged away from it. There were too many things touching her. She was wet and sticky and hot. Why was it so hot all of a sudden?
“I-” Wanda stuttered, her mind blanking completely. She didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t breathe. If she moved to far forward, she’d run into Nat. Too far back, Agatha. Why couldn’t she just leave? She needed to leave. She couldn’t breathe. She can’t fucking breathe and everyone’s watching her and she’s going to explode and-
“I need to pee.” And with that Wanda pushed past the older woman, all but booking it into the nearest bathroom. What the fuck had just happened? One second she's making out with, quite frankly, one of the hottest people she's ever met and the next she's being shown off like a consolation prize. And on top of it all, she desperately needed a change of panties. Of course, she hadn’t exactly planned to have a hot steamy makeout session on a rolling desk chair, but it happened and now she was left very uncomfortable and very unsatisfied. She was never starting a makeout session in that god forsaken office again.

Pay You Back
wc: 1.3k (failed my own 1.1k challenge but close enough) pronouns: none used; n/a warnings: fluff, some themes of social anxiety/embarrassment in public but nothing descriptive, asking about financial troubles, hao being both your mom and boyfriend, he's in zb1 in this summary: idolboyfriend!hao has to come rescue reader when their card declines at the grocery store and he is not prepared to find out the reason it's maxed out. ~masterlist~ ♡ ~kofi (no pressure at all)~ so i wrote this to see if i could force myself to limit to under 1.1k words... i have a tendency to get carried away and not as many people like longer fics so. i failed bc i went 200 words over but it was a pretty close. anyway if i write shorter works, i can write more so i want to get back in the habit of it. better for my stress levels too lmao. just finished my second "semester" back at school i'm so happy!! third semester stars 7/3 tho so that's annoying but. i have one whole week to do nothing (except work but). ANYWAY hope you enjoy :)
“(Y/N)?” You hear your boyfriend’s voice as he enters the grocery shop. Even though Zhang Hao is quite reserved, he’s more than willing to make a small scene if you’re in trouble. “(Y/N)!?”
The store owner, who is also manning the checkout counter, lifts his arm high enough for Hao to see it over the aisles, pointing at you exaggeratedly— more than unamused.
Hao rushes over to where you stand in the checkout lane; your groceries half-bagged, half sitting askew on the conveyor belt. A couple people are beginning to line up behind you. He frowns, trying to decipher what about this scene could’ve possibly made you text him:
🚨 EMERGENCY AT MARKET!! PLEASE COME HELP!! 🚨
“Honey, what’s wrong?” He asks, brows furrowed in confusion. “You said there was an emergency!”
“Is not being able to pay for your large grocery order after someone has already gone through the trouble to scan and bag most of it an emergency?” The owner asks, resentful eyes still locked on your embarrassed ones.
Hao starts to open his mouth to respond, but the owner cuts him off. “I’ll answer for you. It is an emergency... if the owner forgot to pay his utilities bill and the electricity went out while his wife was curling her hair for work this morning.”
Your boyfriend glances at you then back at the store owner. “Right…”
“I tried to just leave, but he kept this exact same rant going for ten minutes,” you whisper to him as the owner continues to moan and groan about how his wife chased him around the house with a slipper. “I’m really sorry to bother you. I know how busy you are.”
Hao shakes his head definitively. “It doesn’t matter how busy I am— I’ll always have time to help you out,” he says with an affectionate smile, raising his hand to squeeze your right shoulder comfortingly. “As long as you continue to conveniently call when I’m already on lunch break.”
You sigh, looking back down at your shoes in embarrassment.
“Did you forget your credit card? Is that the issue?” Hao asks, taking his wallet out of his back pocket before you even answer.
The store owner laughs. “Worse. It declined.”
Hao looks at you concernedly. Maxing out your credit card was not like you at all. Despite the occasional shopping splurge, you were usually quite practical with money. The look of worry on Hao’s face is valid.
Still, he hands his own credit card to the store owner and begins throwing some of your grocery items into bags himself. As the owner hands Hao his receipt and credit card back, you pick up a few of the bags and head toward the sliding doors. Hao grabs the last bag and follows quickly behind you.
When you’re outside, you breathe a deep sigh of relief; even a couple of people’s annoyed stares had caused your heart to speed up and your body temperature to rise. Hao falls into step beside you, but it takes you a few moments to relax enough to remember he’s there.
When you finally look over at him, he smiles reassuringly. The token introvert had set aside his nature (and sacrificed his coveted lunch break) to rescue you. And he’d also paid for your groceries.
“I’ll pay you back,” you promise softly, cheeks turning rosy once more.
Hao purposely bumps into your side as you walk, trying to get you to smile and break your tension. It works. You scrunch your nose up at him in a smile and he glues himself to your side, hooking a finger in your back pocket to keep you as close as possible as you make your way down the quiet street.
After another few moments of comfortable silence, Hao clears his throat. “So,” he starts, trying his best to sound nonchalant. “Are you behind on credit card payments? There’s no shame in it; it happens.”
“No,” you answer simply, shaking your head as you steal a glance at your boyfriend. You watch as his brow furrows in confusion.
“Oh,” he replies, lips forming a small pout. “Well, you know you could tell me if you were, right? I'd do my best to help you if that’s what you needed.”
“I know,” you say with a smile, watching again as he blinks curiously-- trying to figure out what the problem could be. “I’d tell you if I was having financial problems. I'd refuse your help, but I would tell you.”
“Right,” he affirms, nodding as if to convince himself that he could end his interrogation there. He fails, of course, and an unstoppable flurry of questions begins to fall from his lips. “So... So what happened? Did the card expire or something? Why didn’t you use your debit card? There’s money on your debit card, right? And I know you despise cash, but--.”
You stop walking and Hao’s finger still hooked in the pocket of your jeans pulls him back to face you. “There is an incredibly simple explanation for this,” you explain, placing your grocery bags on the ground for a moment as you pull your credit card out of your phone case. “This card isn’t my usual credit card. It’s a very limited credit account that I opened for a specific purchase. It looks almost identical to my actual credit card I use on a normal basis so I grabbed this one by accident before I left this afternoon. I was in a rush and couldn’t find my debit card, so I took what I thought was my credit card thinking I’d be fine, but... I was obviously not fine.”
“Ohhh,” Hao sighs, nodding in both comprehension and relief. “Well that makes a lot more sense. I was worried about you! I didn’t think you’d suddenly developed some sort of debilitating shopping addiction, but...”
“Rest assured,” you soothe, picking your bags back up and continuing with your boyfriend down the street to the bus stop. “I have plenty of money. I wish I had more, of course. But it’s enough to survive for now.”
“Are you sure you want to take the bus?” Hao asks, running his hand down your back comfortingly. “I can drive you.”
“No, you can’t,” you reply, taking the last grocery bag from his hands and draping it on your arm. You rummage through it for a moment before pulling out a fresh deli sandwich. “Your lunch break is almost over and I've used up all of it already. So, eat this on the way back to Wakeone or I will find you and I will shove it down your throat myself.”
“I can see you’re back to normal,” Hao says with a grin, taking the boxed sandwich in his hand as you reach the bus stop. “I love you.”
“Love you more,” you say, checking to make sure no one is around before kissing his cheek. His eyes closed, he sighs blissfully.
Your bus makes its way around the corner, pulling to a stop in front of you.
“Oh, I forgot to ask,” Hao says quickly as you walk up the steps. “What was the purchase that you opened that new credit card for?”
You turn around, biting your lip in a smile. “I bought 40 copies of your debut album!”
“YOU DID WHAT!?”
You’re not sure if you’ve ever seen Zhang Hao more shocked than he is right now. You’re lucky the sandwich box didn’t fly out of his hand and onto the sidewalk.
“It’s okay: I’m pretty sure I made a good investment!” You call back with a wink to your boyfriend, whose jaw is still dropped as the bus door begins to close. “Didn’t I?”
All Hao can do is nod-- a slow, exaggerated nod as he processes what you’ve said.
You wave at him, grinning-- any embarrassment you had felt ten minutes ago entirely washed away. Zhang Hao may have had to buy your groceries for you, but you think you might’ve already paid him back.
As the doors close, you call to a now smiling but awestruck Hao:
“You’re welcome!”

Three’s Company
A/N: I tried to balance some angst with fluff, hope I did it right lol. You’re dating Harry’s best friend but you and Harry are also best friends. Until he confesses a secret. I think this one got long but I wrote it quickly so don’t mind any mistakes. hope everyone enjoys it! Happy holidays :) <3
——————————————————————
“Me and my boys,” I wrap one arm around my boyfriend Frank and the other around my best mate, Harry. “I’m so glad you guys showed tonight!”
“Wouldn’t miss it,” Harry squeezes my hand on his shoulder.
“I’m so proud of you,” Frank pulls me away from Harry into his arms. He plants a very wet kiss on me. “You’ve worked so hard these last few months.”
“I know,” I take my boyfriend’s face in my hands. “Thanks for supporting me.”
“Ahem,” Harry clears his throat. “I was also up at 2am helping you practice lines.”
“Of course,” I plant a kiss on Harry cheeks. “Couldn’t have done it without either of your support.”
I link my hand through Frank’s and we continue the trek to the pub. It was opening day for the musical I was apart of and it was the first major production. Everytime I caught my face on a tube poster, advertising the show, I couldn’t help the giddy rush of warmth that filled me. It was always my dream to be on stage and I finally had it.
“So this girl you’re seeing,” Frank addresses Harry who is walking a few steps ahead on his phone. “You serious about her?”
“Think so,” Harry says. My heart flutters at the thought of him finally settling down, not because I was jealous but the last time he got serious with a girl was a year ago. Even though by then Frank and I had been going steady for 4 years she hadn’t liked our relationship and ended it with him when he wouldn’t cut me off. I didn’t want that to happen to him again.
“Good for you,” Frank says. We share a glance, having had many concerned conversations about Harry’s love life. Even though we were only in our mid-20s, Harry never quite got serious about a girl. We just wanted to see him happy.
Harry’s girlfriend meets us at the pub, she couldn’t come to the show because she had a shift which she tells me when we meet her. Harry had already told me this but I think it’s endearing how much she cares, she tells me she’ll go to the next one Harry shows up for.
“I like her,” I tell Harry later.
“That’s because she’s flattering you,” Harry says as he gets the both of them drinks. “You’re so easy to win over.”
“You’re just jealous we’re getting along,” I tease but he rolls his eyes at me and goes back to the table. I get drinks for Frank and I since he was deep in conversation with someone he knew.
“How long have you two been going out for?” I ask the couple. “Harry only mentioned you a couple weeks ago.”
“Really?” Natalie looks up at Harry.
“Not like that,” Harry flicks my shoulder. “I just didn’t want them sticking their nose in my business. Her and Frank love to interrogate me about my love life.”
“Only cuz we care,” I shrug.
“We started dating April so…almost 2 months?” Nat answers. My jaw drops.
“2 months Harry? And you never said anything?!”
“It’s my life!”
“I tell you everything!”
“I never ask,” Harry shakes his head and turns to Nat. “She’s an oversharer.”
She laughs, “Speaking of sharing remind me how you all met? Harry only said you all met in uni.”
“Harry sucks at stories,” I lean in closer to her so I don’t have to shout so loud. I tell her how Harry and I had met at a school-sponsored concert. We recognized each other from a few classes. We started hanging out a lot to study and party. How he had introduced me to Frank a couple weeks after we met and we hit it off. It took us another semester of circling each other and Harry playing the third wheel for us to finally get together. Frank and I have been together since and Harry has been our best mate since too.
“That’s so sweet,” she squeezes his arm. “You’ll be their best mate at their wedding, godfather to their child, third-wheel for life?”
“Harry looks a bit pale at that,” I joke but he did look paler. “Don’t worry, Frank will still come over to play video games.”
Nat and I laugh and Harry joins but it sounds forced. He was such a weirdo.
“We always say three’s company when it comes to us, right Harry?” I reference the slogan we came up for ourselves. “We won’t forget about Harry when we tie the knot!”
Frank joins us, interrupting anything Harry would’ve said. We all get to knowing each other. I really like Natalie, and Frank tells me later at home that he got a good feeling about her too. It’s unfortunate when a month or so later Harry tells us they broke up.
What comes as the biggest shock is a couple months after that, on an oddly sunny day in October Frank tells me he wanted to break up. Right before my last few weeks. He doesn’t even wait for my run to be over. And just like that, 5.5 years vanish in front of my eyes.
The cherry on top is when Harry stops talking to me as much, starts making excuses for why he can’t hang out. Even though we were mates before Frank and I got together, he seems to have chosen sides. Those weeks feel like my own personal horror movie. I’m a zombie in my day-to-day and when I go on stage I use up every ounce of energy and emotion I have to make my last performances count. But it tears a hole right through me.
The week after Frank and I breakup I bump into Harry near his work. Well, I actually purposely made an appointment close to where he worked in hopes of seeing him.
“H!” I call out when I spot his side profile on the same sidewalk as me. “Harry!”
He does a double take and then halts, people around him grumbling as they walk around. I pull him to the side and give him a big hug. I try not to let it hurt when his arms are slow to go around me.
“I haven’t seen you in weeks, how’ve you been?” I put on a brave voice even though all I want to do is cry.
“Ehm,” he looks uncomfortable but he smiles down at me. “I’m good, I’ve been slammed at work sorry Y/N I’ve been meaning to see you.”
“Yeah,” I wait for him to give me more. The silence stretches out until he fills it.
“I’m really sorry about Frank and you I…I didn’t even know he was going to do that.”
“That makes two of us,” I try to joke but it’s too fresh and my voice cracks. Harry looks away.
“How’s your show going?”
“I’m on two more weeks and then I’m back to auditioning for majority of my days.”
“No callbacks from the other places?”
“Not yet.”
We stand in awkward silence and I want to scream. We were so easy, why was Harry being so weird? It’s not like Frank was the glue that held us together. And now the irritation begins to creep in as Harry continues being standoffish.
“What’s been going on with you?” I try.
“Not much, still trying the dating scene.” He sighs. “And working. My sister’s throwing this Halloween thing even though we’re all adults. I think she’s trying to set me up with one of her mates.”
“Just dress up like a sexy lamp, no one will want to come near you.”
“A sexy lamp?” Harry laughs and finally, finally looks at me.
“Beauty and the Beast? I saw it online when I was looking at costumes. I felt like I was in some twisted alternate universe where people are trying to be a sexy lamp.”
“Have you seen a Christmas Story?” Harry asks and I laugh so hard at that, it feels so good.
“Oh my god,” I wipe away my tears. “I haven’t laughed like that in ages.”
Harry’s cheeks are pink from the cold and the way he looks at me with pity and sadness drops coal into my stockings. How could he look at me like that? He was my best mate, I wasn’t some sorry damsel with a broken fucking heart.
“I’m sorry I haven’t been as available,” he finally says to me.
“Yeah,” I shrug. What else was I supposed to say? Well what I really wanted to do was get angry like everything was normal, but it didn’t feel like the right time.
We stand like that in silence until he tucks a strand of my hair behind my ears and it must be from being so touch, and friend, starved the last couple weeks that I sigh when he does it. He shoves his hand in his pocket and clears his throat.
“I should get going before the tube is sardines.”
“Right,” I say with a hard edge. Harry could tell I was getting upset but I didn’t care.
“I like the new hair by the way,” Harry says as he side steps me and becomes one with the crowd.
And even though he was sorry, he doesn’t message me to hang out or to ask how I’m doing. He abandons me too, only responding when I message him. I wasn’t giving up on him though even though it hurt to know he had given up on me. I couldn’t lose my best friend just because I’d lost my boyfriend.
***
“Hey Harry, I know you’ve been busy lately but my last show is this Thursday. In case you wanted to come see it. It’s gotten a lot smoother since that first one you went to hahahah…anyway. I left your name at the door if you can make it. I hope you can.”
I leave the voicemail on Monday and hope Harry can do it. I’ve had family come down to the city to see me, and friends show up here and there. But the people I thought would show up for my first and last performance are suddenly just gone from my life. If I could go back in time to the first show I’d tell myself to hold on tight because everyone would leave me.
Between practice and evening shows I don’t hear back from Harry. No text, voicemail, or message anywhere. My last night I get into character with a heart made of lead and tissue permanently pressed to my waterline so my mascara doesn’t run. I’d save my tears for the show itself.
As I secure my wig to my head a knock come from my dressing room door.
“It’s open,” I call, expecting the stage manager or my agent or a cast member. Harry walks in instead.
“Harry! You’re here!” I’m not even thinking as I rush to him and throw my arms around him. He’s slow to wrap his around me again and that’s when reality crashes back down. “I’m so glad you could make it.”
“Yeah I wouldn’t miss it,” Harry sits down on a nearby chair. “I know I was supposed to come to a lot more but…”
“You’re here now,” I beam, willing to put the past aside for now. “None of my family could make it tonight, it was going to be sort of depressing for me.”
“Drinks are on me,” Harry says. “I can’t believe my best mate’s done a whole season on broadway.”
“Right!?” I’m more excited of being called his best mate than doing the whole season. As I sit back down to do my wig I keep an eye on H through the mirror.
“So,” I start out tentatively. “Hear from Frank lately?”
“Hm,” he looks up from his phone. “I’m not going to be the messenger between you two.”
“What?! Of course not, jeez H I was only asking if he’s doing okay. I’m not like, thinking he’s somehow going to un-breakup with me.”
“I saw him last weekend. He’s alright, his new flat’s not too far from me actually.”
“That’s good,” I say. So he really did take Harry with him in the split. I can’t help but push more, I turn in my seat to face him.
“I know we haven’t spoken ever since shite hit the fan between Frank and me. But we’re still okay, right? We were always friends before you introduced me to Frank and I hope you don’t feel like you have to take sides.”
“What? No, nothing like that,” he looks cornered. He tugs his sleeve over his hand, not making eye contact.
“Okay...” I couldn’t interpret his body language. “Okay, it seems like you’re annoyed or something? Like, you want to leave this conversation. Did I say something?”
“No,” he shakes his head, his hair moving with the aggressive shake.
“So what is it?” I can hear the annoyance creeping into my own voice. “Did Frank say something about me? Why do you seem so cagey? What’s going on Harry?”
“I’m not-I’m not cagey,” he scoffs, straightening to his full height. “I just don’t feel like talking.”
“So Frank said something-”
“No! I just don’t care to have this conversation.”
“Oh,” my eyes sting. “So that’s it?”
“What do you mean?”
“Frank and I break up and so do we? You don’t want to talk anymore?”
“I didn’t mean it like that-”
“Well it sounded a lot like that,” I hold up my hand. “Don’t try to backtrack. I thought we were best friends Harry, nothing was supposed to change between us just because Frank and I are on bad terms-”
“But that’s the thing!” Harry shouts. “That’s the thing--everything’s changed! Everything, Y/N...look, I don’t want to talk about this!”
“I do!” I push back, interested in what he meant. “What changed? I don’t understand, and I want to talk about it! I can’t lose my boyfriend and my best friend in the same week! Nothing should change between us, Frank has nothing to do with us!”
Harry looks puzzled as his eyes fix on my face. I raise an eyebrow when he doesn’t speak. “What?”
“You’ve never...” he drags his hand down his face. “Y/N, I don’t want to talk about this. For our friendship’s sake, I can’t talk about this.”
“For our friendship’s sake?!” I exclaim. “I need to talk about this! You’re my best friend! Or so I thought.”
“No!” Harry finally snaps. “I don’t want to talk about this! You think Frank and you breaking up shouldn’t change our dynamic, change us, but of course it fucking does. And I don’t want to talk about it.”
I catch his arm as he tries to walk away, nearly being dragged with him as he rushes away. “Explain, Harry please explain. I don’t get it!”
“Fuck Y/N,” Harry talks with his back to me. I drop his arm. “Frank was the only thing that helped keep you in the friendzone. When you’re not his girlfriend...I don’t know what we are.”
I don’t know what to say, Ifeel like the wind’s been knocked out of me. “So all these years...you were just hanging around me because you wanted to be something more? Was our whole friendship a lie?”
“Of course not, what?” Harry finally turns. “You’re my best friend, you always have been. But by the time I decided to do something about my crush, you confessed to me that you really liked my best friend. And I could tell Frank was really happy around you. I loved both of you, I couldn’t get in between that.”
“So what, you’ve just been...secretly resenting us every time we all hung out? Punishing yourself everytime you third-wheel us?”
“No, no no this isn’t how...that’s not how it’s been.”
“What the fuck Harry?” I cry. “You’ve been secretly pining after your best friend’s girlfriend for years?”
“I know it’s fucked up!” Harry shouts. “I know I’m fucked up for wanting my best friend’s girlfriend I know! You don’t have to spell out how fucked up it is!”
“What the fuck,” I whisper.
“Don’t look at me like that,” Harry’s face crumples. “Please, Y/N that’s just what I was trying to say. When you were with Frank, I could hang out with you—with the both of you and not care because you two made each other so happy how could I come in between the happiness of the two people I loved the most in the world?
But now that you two have broken up, there’s no red light there. There’s nothing to stop me from kissing you. I mean, consent obviously…” He corrects himself, sighing. “I know, I know. That’s why I didn’t want to say anything. But you always know how to pull anything out of me.”
“I wish you were better equipped against me,” I slide down the wall. “This is so fucked up, I wish I could un-know that.”
“Is it so bad?” Harry’s gaze burns a hole through me. “Do you hate me?”
“No, I couldn’t...” how could I hate him when my intention the first night we ever met was to hook up with him. Things only changed when I met his best friend. “I don’t hate you, I just don’t know where we go from here.”
“I just need some space,” Harry says. “I think you probably need some too, now that that confession’s out of the box.”
“Shit,” I bury my face in my hands.
“I promise, we can go back to being best friends.” Harry continues. “I just need to figure out, where to put you. In my head...in my heart.”
I don’t say anything, I could barely look at him. To think he had this in him for as long as I’ve known him. It feels a bit like maybe I never knew him.
“I’ll be in the audience…break a leg Y/N.”
I hear the door close behind him but I can’t get up. I stay curled on the floor until a knock reminds me there’s 5 minutes ‘til positions. Shit.
I finish my hair and do some breathing exercises. I had to compartmentalize and use the emotions in the show just like my coach taught me.
“You’re okay,” I tell myself in the mirror. “You’re going to kill it. You’re okay. You can deal with everything later. Just do your best now.”
With one final breath I exit my room and get out there, putting on my best performance. And I guess the crazy heightened emotions help because the final reviews rave about my intensity. And while I curl up in bed that night sobbing myself to sleep, my inbox finally fills with open offers and auditions. This heartbreaking period opened a door to something new.
Two months later:
As a child, I always wanted to be in New York City during Christmas. Every movie made it look magical and wistful.
It was magical, in the right spots. And I couldn’t deny the magnetic pulse that surrounded the place. But it was also cold, incredibly cold, lonely, and dirty.
“Hey,” my roomate calls out when I enter our flat. Or apartment. “You got some mail I slipped it under your door.”
“Thanks,” I unwrap my massive scarf and heavy coat. “It’s so bloody cold out there.”
“It’s just starting,” she glances away from the TV to our window. Small flakes were starting to fall, it felt like looking at a snow globe.
She goes back to watching TV and I head to my room. It was smaller than the one I had back home but I’d decorated with fuzzy rugs and cozy comforters and furry blankets. And now I looked forward to it every day.
During the day I was practicing for my second ever show. After my intense performance on my last day, I was invited to audition for &Juliet which was moving to NYC. If they liked me, my flight would be paid for and I would join them in the Big Apple. Luckily, they liked me enough to offer one of the roles a couple weeks later. It wasn’t too major, but big enough that I had scenes throughout the musical. After what had happened the past months I thought fuck it and went.
It might seem like I was running away from my life but I saw it as a clean start. Big breakup, end of my show’s season, and a truth that shattered my core. I couldn’t stay in London.
I hadn’t told him. Harry. After everything I didn’t think I had to. He wanted space, I needed the same thing.
But it was lonely living in a new city with no connection to back home. Sure I talked to family and friends regularly, I hung out with my roomate and went out for drinks with my cast mates. But the people—the person who knew me better than I knew myself, well he was gone.
Frank had messaged me a few weeks ago when I posted on my story about New York. I didn’t have that big of a following but anyone who liked me in my last roles tended to stay on and follow my journey. So I used social media as an online journal.
It had been surprisingly courteous. He’d congratulated me, and said if he was ever in the city he would book tickets to see me. It was kind. And I don’t know if the shock of Harry’s truth was bigger than the breakup, or if enough time passed for me not to feel as hurt about it, but I liked talking to Frank just as a friend.
That’s what he asked me when we broke up—if we could still be friends. I thought it was so selfish and dickish to ask but now, I warmed up to the idea.
The opening show was booked for the beginning of January so I couldn’t go home for Christmas. I knew it was going to be lonely but a few of my castmates invited me to their Christmas eve dinner. It seemed like a lot of New York was made up of found family. I was still finding mine.
***
“Two weeks until our first show,” Nolan drops his head down on the table.
“You’ll get it,” Christa pats him on the back. “He’s just hard on you because he wants you to be your best.”
“That one fucking line!” Nolan kept missing his cue on his final line and it had been haunting him.
“What could help?” Ravi joins us with the coffees he promised. It was a 8am rehearsal today and we were all beat from last night’s rehearsal.
“I’m close to you,” I offer. “I could cue you somehow if it helps?”
“Yeah?” Nolan look up. “Maybe, let’s try that. Something subtle.”
“Yeah!” Christa lights up.
“Okay,” I feel good inside, having made a good contribution. Sometimes I felt like an outsider coming into this production so late, it felt like everyone was already familir with everyone else. And I had the least experience out of everyone. It was hard not to feel like an imposter.
“You’re a natural,” Ravi hands me a coffee. “Don’t worry too much Y/N. I see the gears turning in your head.”
“Yeah everyone already loves you.” Christa pipes in. “You gotta relax.”
“I try!” I roll back my shoulders. The role meant a lot to me. “I just want to do my best.”
“You are,” she lays a hand on my shoulder. “You know you’ll get told off if you weren’t.”
“So Y/N is joining us for Christmas?” Ravi asks.
“I think so?” Christa raises an eyebrow at me.
“Yeah,” I nod. “I’m not going home this year.”
“Feel free to invite a plus-one,” Christa says.
“Oh,” I plat with the lid of my cup. “Probably won’t.”
“No boyfriends?” Nolan asks. “Girlfriends?”
“Nolan,” Christa scolds. He shrugs.
“No I,” this was awkward. “I had a breakup before I finished my last show. I haven’t really been eager to jump into a new one.” Especially when Harry’s confession always lingers in the back of my mind. Damn him.
“You ran away.” Nolan states like it’s fact.
“No!” I argue. “It was like over a month later. Plus we started reconnecting again-“
“Nope. Don’t go there,” Christa warns. “Never walk back into the past.”
“My fiancé and I broke up once and we’re getting married next summer,” Ravi jumps in.
“Don’t listen to him,” Christa waves her hand in his face. “He’s an anomaly.”
“Who are you calling anomaly?” Ravi asks. We laugh as the insults go flying between them and a small part of me is relieved to not be on the outside looking in like I did when I first arrived.
“I’m not getting back together with him, plus there’s so much distance.” I reassure the group.
Plus Frank literally said he didn’t feel the same way about me anymore. After 5 years together, he’d fallen out of love somewhere along the way. It was hurtful, and I don’t think he would go back on his word. I don’t think I’d want to take him back anymore.
It hits me then, both of the boys I loved so dearly were lying along the way. One said he loved me even though deep inside he was falling out of love. The other loved me more than a friend, but only called me his best friend.
“You alright?” Nolan asks. The group had left me while I sat in thought, everyone was getting into places.
“Yeah,” I reach for his hand and he helps me up. “Just thinking.”
We get into place and with direction, begin rehearsal for the day. I get lost in it, one of my favourite things to do.
***
“Flowers!” One of the PAs drops a bouquet onto my table as I finish setting my makeup in place. All the moving and the harsh stage lighting made it sweaty, and I couldn’t risk my makeup running.
“I don’t think…” I stop as I notice it was my name on the card. Who would send me flowers on opening? My family already wished me luck on facetime and the few friends in the city were here for the show. I turn the card around.
I already know it’s going to be fantastic but break a leg anyway xx
I read it again. It sounded like Frank, he thought everything was fantastic. Maybe he remembered opening night.
I smell the flowers, another cast mate who shared my room strikes up a conversation about them and I finish my hair to it. We go out together and I feel my heart in my throat. The last time I had all my support in the second row. This time, they were an ocean away and my heart ached thinking about them.
Channel your emotions. Channel your emotions.
I repeat the mantra, and when it’s my cue I break out on stage and wait a beat. Then start my line.
I don’t have a moment to actually look at the audience until my second-last scene. That’s when I notice them. Frank. And Harry.
“Count…me in!” I stumble on a line. Shit. Shitshitshit.
I look back at Christa and continue our lines but her eyebrow dips for a moment and I know she caught it too. I just hoped our director wouldn’t point it out.
Harry and Frank were here. Harry and Frank were here? Don’t think about it. Can’t think about it.
“A strong woman,” I respond to Nolan. I nudge him like we’d practiced and his final line comes tumbling out. I send out a prayer that it was smooth.
I go off stage for a few until my next scene and catch my breath.
“What happened?” Nolan asks. “I thought I heard you almost forget a line.”
“I saw someone in the audience, wasn’t expecting…” i trail off as I hear my cue. “Talk later!”
I rush back on and finish up. It’s exhilerating and just like that I can’t believe our first show is done!
We stay on for the final bits, the final bow, and then I’m rushing to my room for my phone. Did Frank message me? Did I miss something?
But it’s empty.
The other girls in the room trickle in and we all congratulate each other. They go over some of their lines and areas they almost messed up in. I’m too distracted by everything to join fully.
I try to engage but I’m mostly wiping away my stage makeup so I can head out. I don’t know if I wanted to avoid who I just saw or find them.
If you avoid them, then you really are running away.
Ugh. I would have to find them some way. I leave Frank a message and go back to the conversation.
Eventually, with dread weighing me down, I agree to meet the boys where Frank texted me. They were staying at a hotel a few blocks away and there was a bar in the lobby they said was nice.
Frank stands as soon as he sees me, Harry’s back is to me so he’s slow to stand.
“Y/N you were bloody fantastic!” Frank wraps me in his arms and it’s been so long that I squeeze him extra hard. I missed him, or maybe I just missed being held.
“Thank you!” I say into his shoulder. I let go and look between the two. “What are you two doing here? You didn’t just come for me right? Because that’s insane. I…”
“Well kind of,” Frank admits.
“That’s…too much!” I imagine the cost of everything and cringe that they paid that much to see me.
“Well Harry started dating a pilot,” Frank says proudly. Harry doesn’t meet my eye. “So we practically flew for pennies!”
“Oh wow!” I lean into Frank’s arm around my back. It was probably bad, but it felt good here. Except for the massive awkward block that was Harry. “I don’t know what to say I really didn’t expect-“
“I know.” Frank laughs. I missed that laugh. “We caught you by surprise, I saw it on your face right Harry?”
“Yeah,” Harry forces a laugh. “We felt bad. Didn’t mean to catch you off guard.”
“It’s not the first time,” I tell him and he catches my double meaning because he stares at me. I raise my eyebrows and he looks away, back at Frank.
“Can I have a moment?” I turn to Frank. “With Harry?”
“Oh,” his face falls. “Of course.”
We stand awkwardly as Frank doesn’t leave. He looks to the side like he usually does when he’s trying to say something. “Look Y/N, I know after our breakup our group just fell apart. But don’t blame Harry. He was caught in the middle, he told me you were mad at him. Be mad at me instead-“
“Thanks. Frank.” Harry cuts his best friend off. “Don’t worry mate, we just need to talk.”
I keep my eyes trained on Harry as Frank moves away. I take his seat at the bar and wait for Harry to take his.
“Why are you here?” I ask.
“Why did you disappear?” He asks back.
“You wanted space. Wasn’t that good for us?”
“I meant time, like time away. Not move to bloody America.”
“Well I had an opportunity and I took it!”
“Yeah well,” Harry takes a swig of his drink. “I’m glad you did. You were phenomenal out there. I’m proud of you.”
My heart softens a bit when he says it, so does his face. I can’t take my eyes off him, he made me so mad but I missed him so much. This was the longest we’d been away from each other with no contact.
“I missed you,” he finally says just as I go in on him.
“How did you come here? With Frank? After what you told me?” I missed him too, but I wanted answers. How could someone be in love with their best friend’s girlfriend, and fool both parties by being so casual around them all the time. How could he look at Frank in the face???
“So I guess you didn’t miss me,” Harry tries teasing.
“Obviously I did. Not the point though.” I scowl when Harry smiles. But the smile relaxes his face and my heart skips a beat.
“He doesn’t know. Doesn’t need to know. Just like you didn’t need to until you forced it out of me. I didn’t do anything wrong Y/N. You can’t treat me like I did something awful, I just had feelings for you.”
Had.
“Okay,” I take Harry’s drink from his side since I hadn’t ordered mine yet and down it in one gulp. “You’re alright?”
“Yeah,” Harry takes the empty glass from me. “The space was good.”
“Okay,” I feel slightly offended, but I decide to ignore it. I find Frank by the window and wave him over. He comes back with a grin that I can’t help but mirror.
“So how’s the new job?” I ask him once we all find seats. We’d been talking back and forth online, I knew all about his life without me. He knew all about mine.
“Really good,” Frank lights up. “I finally get my own office! It’s small but nice! I’m getting a good feeling from my team too, it’s good.”
“Good feeling from the team?” Harry smirks at Frank and Frank blushes.
“What?” I look between then. “What does that mean?”
“Nothing,” Frank says quickly. “Harry thinks the team has a lot of good looking people. He’s trying to start a fire.”
“Ah,” I look at Harry but he’s staring at his drink. He was trying to start a fire, but it didn’t bother me. Although Frank and I never shared romantic updates, as time went on, the thought of him moving on felt less and less awful. Even though it was a bit bitter to think about, it was over.
“What’s with the pilot girlfriend? Where’d you find her?” I ask.
“Work conference, she was at the bar.” Harry tells me. “She flies a lot, but she’s funny. I like her.”
“Good,” I try to stay neutral even though a confusing wave of emotions washes up. “Good to know you’re still keeping that string of girlfriends.”
“Speaking of,” Harry ignores me and pulls his phone out of his jacket. “She’s free now. We have plans. It was good seeing you Y/N. We’ll catch dinner later?”
“Oh,” I wasn’t expecting him to leave so soon. “Yeah sure-“
“Yeah we’re here until Thursday.” Frank tells me. “If not tomorrow whenever you’re free.”
“Yeah!” I wasn’t expecting to be alone with Frank tonight.
“If it’s just the two of us,” Frank reaches over to my chair and pulls it closer. “Come in so I can hear you better.”
“Okay!” I felt confused, and lonely. And that was dangerous. I just couldn’t get drunk otherwise I might make bad decisions.
I stop Frank after another drink and tell him I should get home so I wasn’t hungover for tomorrow’s show.
But I’m so tired I fall asleep as soon as I get in bed. I want to sort out what just happened tonight but I save it for the daytime.
***
“You weren’t there for first show drinks!” My castmate calls out the next day. I was in to go over some lines and changes, and apparently mostly everyone had gone out for drinks to celebrate last night. I was too busy catching up my past.
“Had some guests in town,” I mumble.
“Guests?” Nolan asks curiously.
“Some friends came in to see the show,” I try to act casual.
“Just some friends? Flew halfway across the world? They’re just friends?”
“Need me some of those friends.”
“Well,” I had a bunch of nosy castmates. “One’s my ex. The other one is my best friend. Alright?”
“Alright now it gets juicy,” Christa comes up beside me. “I thought this ex was in the past-“
“Please don’t judge me,” I squirm. “Just…we were all catching up that’s all! Now. I’m going to go get ready.”
“Touchy,” I hear someone say as I head to my shared dressing room.
I didn’t want to discuss it with anyone because I didn’t know what to say. My ex came to town and it was dangerously good seeing him. My estranged best friend was also here, oh yeah he’s been in love with me the whole time, and then skipped out early for his girlfriend. Then why show up at all? Ugh. It was making me very confused and I had to focus.
It’s quick touch-ups and placement changes and then I’m on stage for our second show. It’s smoother and there are more people tonight. I loved the exhilarating feeling of being on stage. It was incomparable.
I politely decline Frank’s request for meeting up tonight with him and Harry, so he doesn’t have to play the third wheel. I needed some alone time and doing the shows was tiring.
I take a much needed shower at home and continue thinking about the show, the boys, and why I couldn’t stop obsessing over them!
After Sunday’s show, I agree to dinner with Harry and Frank. Apparently they’d been exploring the city, and Harry had gotten a new tattoo. He proudly displays it at dinner.
“Looks sore,” I appreciate the line design. Frank’s using the toilet and we peruse the menu while we wait.
“A bit but I’m taking care of it,” Harry flips over his menu.
“Your girlfriend isn’t joining?”
“I’m meeting up with her later,” Harry glances at me. “Why? D’you want to meet her or something?”
“N-no?” What the hell. “She probably won’t last long anyway, what’s the point.”
“Really, again Y/N?” Harry puts his menu down.
“What!? You never keep a girlfriend for very long. I meet one, then I’m meeting another.”
“Piss off,” his face turns pink and I’m surprised how easily this is getting under his skin. I always used to tease him about how quickly he turned over girlfriends. “The girlfriend jokes stopped being funny. And at least I’ve got a girlfriend.”
“What the hell?” Now it’s my turn to be offended. “I had a boyfriend. Long-term. As you would know. I think the way you put it…it helped you keep me friendzoned?”
“Why are you being such a bitch?” Harry stands just as Frank approaches our table.
“Hey hey what’s going on here?” His outstretched arm grasps Harry’s shoulder.
“Y/N’s being a bitch,” Harry says as I say “Harry’s a dick.”
“Woah,” Frank tries to get Harry back into his seat. “What happened to you two? You guys never actually fight c’mon Harry-“
“Just let him go,” I say as Harry whips his coat off the back of his chair.
“No! Harry man come on,” Frank steps in his way. “I don’t know why you two are so sensitive these days. What are you guys really fighting about?”
Harry and I make eye contact. He looks away first and just pushes Frank out of his way.
“What the hell?” Frank turns to me. “Y/N, he flew across the pond to see you why are you treating him like shite?”
That gets me, the guilt kicks in. “I don’t-he’s just so-ugh!” I quickly follow Harry’s steps and find him on his phone outside the restaurant.
“What do you want?” Harry asks when he spots me.
“I’m sorry,” I decide to be the bigger person. Harry came all this way, I don’t know why I was acting like this. “Come back to dinner.”
“I already texted my girlfriend—the one I’ll break up with soon anyway. Yeah, we have plans so I’m alright.“
“Harry,” I deserved that. “Really I’m sorry. I just…I don’t know how to be around you right now. We never talked after that confession you dropped on me and-“
“Well who’s fault is that?” Harry bites. And I know I’d struck a nerve. The Nerve. “You force me to tell you something and then you just abandon me afterwards-“
“Only after you abandoned me!” The gloves were off. “After Frank and I broke up I was so alone, you didn’t even text me!”
“I already told you, I was trying to reconcile everything myself!”
“You’re acting like being around me when I was single was a test of your self-control. Like you would just burn to touch me or something what the fuck? If it was so easy for you to be around us when Frank and I were dating, it should’ve been just as easy to support me as a friend. Isn’t that what it comes down to at the end of the day? We’re friends…and you just left me.”
I choke up and turn to face the road so Harry can’t see. The roads are wet with slush and backed up with cars that were permanently home between the yellow lines in this city.
“I’m sorry,” Harry says behind me. “I was a bad friend.”
“You were,” I tell him. I turn back around. “I just…I thought I knew you inside and out. I thought we could read each other’s minds with how well we knew each other. And turns out you were hiding such a big secret. Something like this, i-it’s confusing. I feel like I don’t know you.”
“You really never knew?” Suspicion creeps into his voice. “Never? It was complete news to you?”
“Yes!” I say truthfully. “You’re Frank’s best friend! You set us up. Life isn’t actually like Love, Actually.”
“Well it was for me Y/N I—fuck,” Harry leans back against the brick wall. “I didn’t want to tell you! I just needed some time and then I could go back to being your Harry. You just kept fucking pushing-“
“I wasn’t holding a gun to your head,” I argue. “You could’ve lied. You could’ve come up with any excuse-“
“You’d catch me in any lie I told.”
“Never caught you in the lie you’d been telling us for five years.”
We have a stare off as my words echo between us.
“I never lied.” Harry finally says. His phone chirps and he checks it, I watch as he types out a response.
“Lie of omission. Same thing.”
“You were never supposed to know. I was supposed to get over it.”
“And did you?” I ask before I can think. I don’t know if I even wanted an answer.
“Yeah,” Harry crossed his arms. “I told you I needed time. I missed you yeah, but luckily you left the whole fucking continent. I’m over it now.”
I don’t know what to say. After all that, he’d gotten over it. It felt a bit embarrassing, like I’d made a bigger deal than I needed too. But deep down my loneliness grew. Nobody wanted me. Not even Harry.
“Not like I had a chance anyway yeah?” Harry looks at me so intensely I have to look away. “It was always Frank for you.”
“Well you were never in the picture,” I say. I never knew he felt that way. He doesn’t say anything. “What?!”
“What’s that mean? I was never in the picture?”
“I dunno! I never saw you like that because I never knew you liked me.”
“Wait wait,” Harry leans in. “So you’re saying if I’d told you in the 5+ years you and Frank were dating. You might’ve dumped him to date me? You might have had feelings for your boyfriend’s best friend?”
“No! I…” I don’t know what I was saying. Would I have? I thought he was hot the first night we met. I’d seen him in class, he was smart and attractive. But Frank was my type when I met him so Harry was friendzoned immediately after.
“Now that’s fucked up,” Harry has the balls to be judgemental.
“Don’t judge me! I don’t know what I would do. And I’m only thinking about this after Frank and I have long been broken up. I never thought about you while we were together. Can’t say the same about you!”
Harry’s phone lights up again and he scans the text.
“Whatever Y/N. My girlfriend’s down the road, I’m meeting up with her. Since you don’t care to meet her, I’ll save you the trouble.”
He walks away from me without looking back. I stare after him, watch as he embraces someone and then he’s lost in the crowd. I feel a sob come up but I take a gulp of cold air instead and tamp it down. Harry wasn’t going to have this power over me. Fuck him.
“He’s gone?” Frank asks when I make my way back to him. He’d ordered us wine and I knock back the glass before I answer.
“Yeah, whatever. I apologized, he’s just…a dick.”
“He’s always got a soft spot for you. I’m just surprised. I’m sorry if this was my doing.” Frank looks puzzled. He was so innocent, he didn’t even know the truth. The trust he had was borderline pitiful.
And now I was being rude.
“It’s alright,” I pat his hand. “It’s just you and me again tonight. We’re good company.”
“Yeah,” Frank holds my hand. “But three’s company remember?”
“No so much these days…”
“Yeah,” Frank nods. “But no matter, I do love your company.”
I ignore the L-word and pour myself more wine. We order from the menu but I don’t have much of an appetite. I nibble at my food and take the rest to-go. We wind up at a bar and order more drinks while we continue talking.
Somehow we wind up back to the topic of Harry. And our friend group before we broke up.
“He’s still a serial dater,” Frank says with a candidness that revealed how drunk he was getting. “I don’t know why he’s looking for the perfect girl. I keep telling him the perfect girl is what you make her. But he’s got this bloody idea in his head and no girl lives up to her.”
“Did he tell you that?” I move in closer to hear Frank better, curious if he ever hinted at me.
“Not really,” Frank swishes the Guinness in his glass. “He met someone in uni apparently. But it didn’t work out. I told him he should contact her y’know? But he said she’s moved on, in a relationship. So i said get a fucking move on too right?”
“Mmm,” so he had told a white lie to his best friend.
“Y’know,” Frank lays a hand on my arm. “Y/N, we had something really good. Sometimes I second guess. I feel like I’m an idiot for letting a woman like you go. I still love you. I do. But it’s not that love from before. That wow love.”
It was shitty to hear but I knew what he meant. Our love had gotten comfortable. Like we’d been married 40+ years. When I had enough time to see clearly I’d realized too that wasn’t the kind of love I wanted. I just hadn’t been self-aware enough to see it.
“Yeah,” I say. Frank leans in closer to hear me. “I know what you mean.”
“Maybe if we’re still single in 30 years and we still have that love for each other. We can just get married.”
“Settle?” I ask.
“We’d be fifty!” Frank says. “It’s a good age to settle.”
I laugh. “Fine, deal.”
We link pinkies and maybe it’s the liquor (definitely the liquor) or feeling lonely for months (also the feeling lonely for months) but we lean in the rest of the way. Frank’s lips on mine are familiar, and I ache for more. I pull him deeper into the kiss and he pulls me in until I’m practically in his lap. I feel delirious, touch-starved for too long. All I want was for every inch of clothing to be on the floor.
“Let’s go back to yours,” I say when we take a moment to catch our breaths.
“Really?” Frank asks. “You sure?”
“Just two exes right? Nothing more?”
“Yeah,” Frank goes in for another kiss. “I’d like that.”
He grabs my hand and we stumble out, putting our jackets on against the icy cold as we stumble towards his hotel. If I was more sober maybe I would remember Christa’s warning of not to go backwards but I missed the feeling of being wanted. I missed Frank. And we agreed no strings. What was there to lose?
***
A loud noise wakes me out of my sleep. My eyes are crusted with sleep and I have a raging headache. Where the fuck was I?
I peel my eyes open to blinding light and immediately close them, turning my face into the pillow. The top of my head touches something, a body. The night rushes back just as a voice asks, “what the fuck is this?”
There’s a flurry of movement beside me and I peek open my eye. Harry stands by the TV with barely-concealed rage in his face. Fuck shit!
“Harry!” Frank’s groggy voice calls his best friend’s name with joy. “Good to see you’re back-“
“Is that Y/N? What happened last night? Why is she here?”
I sit up slowly with the comforter wrapped tightly around my torso.
“Uhhh,” Frank looks over at me. He doesn’t look guilty or regretful, somehow he just looks casual. And I sort of love him more for it. “Some fun?!”
Maybe it was casual fun for him, I realize. Meanwhile a bad mix of guilt and disgust churn away inside me. Not because of Frank, but because I’d used him whilst feeling lonely.
Harry looks in my direction and I would be dead on the spot if looks could kill. Who the fuck was he to judge?
“We’re consenting adults Harry,” my voice was rough. “It’s not your concern.”
“Yeah mate,” Frank reaches around for his underpants and dresses himself enough to stand up. “We can talk later about last night, you and me. But Y/N and I were just…finding comfort in the familiar. Right?”
“Yeah,” I answer Frank. “Just some casual fun.”
“Yeah,” Frank rummages in a drawer. “I’m hopping in the shower. Maybe we can all grab breakfast-“
“I should go,” I didn’t have a show tonight but I couldn’t stay here any longer.
“Alright,” Frank shrugs. “We’ll do something later.”
When he shuts the door behind him, the silence in the room becomes suffocating. Harry stands, pinching the bridge of his nose and I try to locate with my eyes where exactly my undergarments are. Ah, of course right by Harry’s feet.
“Um,” I clear my throat as I stand with the comforter wrapped around me. I point to the items. “D’you mind?”
Harry steps back in disgust and I reach for them. When he doesn’t turn around I raise my eyebrow and do a spinning motion with my hand. He rolls his eyes and turns.
“I can’t fucking believe you,” he finally speaks—no, spits out as I slip into my clothes. “How the fuck are you fooling around with Frank? Don’t play with him Y/N!”
“Play with him?” I zip my jeans on and return the comforter to the bed. “Play with him? Frank’s a grown man. We have history. I can bloody well sleep with him if I want!”
“Not like this!” Harry turns, eyes blazing. “Not after what you said yesterday to me!”
“What I said? After you asked a hypothetical? A hypothetical in retrospect? When you have been pining after his girlfriend for five years? Five years! And you have the gall to judge me!”
“I can’t help how I felt!” Harry steps closer. “Stop fucking holding that over me like I’m disgusting to have felt that! I stayed in my lane, you didn’t even know—that’s how much I stayed in my lane.”
He had a point. It was wrong, but on a technicality he didn’t do anything wrong. He takes my silence as a chance to continue chewing me out.
“You hint that you could’ve felt something for me last night and then you come and sleep with him? After everything? What are you doing Y/N? This isn’t you.”
“I’m doing whatever I want! You can’t control whatever I want to do based on whatever fucked up morals you’re using on your high horse!”
“My high horse!” Harry brushes my hand off when I touch his shoulder to keep distance. He was getting too close. “What do you want Y/N? You’re angry that I abandoned you, you’re angry I confessed a secret you pulled out of me, then you’re fucking your ex—my best friend, and judging me for my relationship history?”
“You’re way too close,” I push him gently by the shoulder.
“Oh you don’t like that? Both Frank and Harry close to Y/N again.”
“Fuck off!” I push him again, harder this time and he flicks my hands off.
I shove him with both hands but he’s hard to move. He grabs my wrist. “Is that what you wanted all along? Just both of us trailing after you? Do you get a power trip out if it? Do you want me to kiss you too? Maybe a quickie before Frank gets out of the shower? Is that why you did this? Because I said last night I didn’t think about you like that anymore?”
“Stop!” I finally manage to get my hand out of his grip. He looks down at my hand and then at my face. It drops, and he steps back.
I turn for my coat and catch a glimpse of my face. I was crying.
“Y/N don’t go-“ Harry calls out as I rush to the front door.
“You must forget,” I keep my hand on the doorknob as I tell him one last thing. “He broke up with me. I’m not stringing him along. I’m not sleeping with him to get to you. I…I don’t even know you anymore Harry…I don’t want to see you again. If you’re here ‘til Thursday, stay out of my way.”
I do the walk of shame to the subway and sit on the ride home, crying openly on the plastic seats. Nobody gave a fuck.
I don’t know what had gotten into Harry. But I don’t know why I gave in last night too. I wasn’t at a place emotionally to do this. Even though Harry’s words were his own projections one thing was true. His words last night did hit a chord, I did want to feel wanted. And Frank didn’t deserve that.
I had run away instead of facing my reality. And it had gotten me nowhere.
6 months later:
My flat feels bigger than it did. I also feel bigger in it. Most of my furniture was still in storage, I had movers coming tomorrow.
I was finally back to London this week. I was jet lagged as fuck, and cried at least once a day. I missed the life I made in New York, the family I made. Our show had ended a couple months ago. Somehow I’d booked a small role in a series I’d end up dead in after four episodes. I’d met an amazing guy there but we knew I was always moving back. We didn’t try long-distance, we just agreed it was right people wrong time.
In my remaining time in New York I learned to pivot from running away to facing my past. Frank and I had talked before he left back in January. Even though I told him nothing about what happened I had told him it was probably best we stopped contact for a while. I needed to focus on my present.
And I had. I focused on my career, on learning to be alone and exploring why I needed to be wanted. Learning to be happy by myself.
It was 6 months but it felt like years with how transformational it had been. New York city had changed my life but London was calling me back home.
I’d seen a couple friends since. One of them being from uni had told me about Harry. Apparently he had moved to Australia while his company was setting up offices there. A small part of me had held onto the hope of bumping into him in the city but I let it go when I hear the news. Maybe Harry and I were just going to live separate lives.
We never spoke after that day. It was hard to reconcile his actions with who I knew him to be. Over time I recognized we were both confused and hurting.
I loved him. It was simple. Maybe I always loved him. But I think it was a love that wasn’t meant to be. I didn’t hold out hope for him, and I made sure to minimize my heartache when I thought about the friendship I lost.
That love wasn’t the same way I loved Frank. With Harry I really did feel we were twin flames, we knew each other right to the darkest parts of out souls. With Frank we fit right. It was mutual respect and love.
I had dinner plans with Frank next week, the first time we were talking since January too. I heard from my friend he had a girlfriend, he seemed serious about her. I was really happy for him.
I ease into London life slowly. I had a few roles on small sets that I popped in and out of for work. I met up with friends and visited my family in the country. Summer sweltered on and the city welcomed me back home with a steady hum. Despite my initial feelings of growing out of all my friendships, I slowly surround myself by loved ones again and find my flow.
Autumn creeps in and I welcome the cool breeze on early set days. I drink countless coffees and grow into my own skin. I book more roles and finally feel secure, it feels amazing.
An old friend invited me to a Halloween party. Costumes not optional she texts.
Another friend and I decide to go as Marvel characters. I dress up as the Scarlett Witch
“Is that Y/N Y/L/N gracing us with her presence?” An old friend calls me out when we get there. It’s easy to get lost amongst old friends and everyone has a million questions about show business. When it gets overwhelming I excuse myself and take a lap, admiring the creativity in everyone’s costumes.
“Y/N you made it!” I look closer at the man in the makeup and realize it was Frank.
“Hey!” I wrap my arms around him. “You made it too!”
“Barely,” he points his thumb at the gorgeous woman beside him. She’s dressed as Rapunzel.
“You made him Flynn,” I say.
“Yeah!” She holds up her frying pan. “You must be Y/N, I’ve heard a lot about you!”
“That makes me nervous,” I grimace but we go in for a hug. “It’s so nice to meet you though! You two should win best couple costume!”
“This hair gel is making my scalp itchy. Like crazy.” Frank goes to touch his hair but his Rapunzel slaps his hand away which gets me laughing hysterically. They really embodied the characters.
“Hey,” Frank says once we get serious. “I dunno if you’ve seen him yet. Harry’s here though.”
“I-oh,” I catch my breath. I wasn’t expecting that. “He’s not…Australia?”
“No no, he came back a couple weeks ago. They’re done whatever project they were doing. So…you haven’t seen him?”
“No,” I glance around. “I don’t know if I want to. We haven’t talked since…”
“Just talk to him,” Frank says, suddenly intense. He grabs my arm and moves to the side, mouthing something to his girlfriend. Seeing him with her, I feel so distant from the girl who dated him I’m surprised we did for so long. “Y/N both of you need to make up. Look at us, we broke up after a long term relationship and we’re friends again. There’s nothing that you two can’t get over.”
“It’s not that simple,” I couldn’t out Harry so I mince my words. “Harry said some vile things. And…he’s not who I thought he was for all those years. It’s different!”
“Y/N,” Frank takes a deep breath. He looks to the side, and I can tell he’s choosing his words carefully. “I love the both of you. We’re all best mates, we used to do everything together. Three’s still company! And I want to see both of you happy-“
“I am happy-“
“Yeah but Harry’s a sore spot. Right?”
I roll my eyes. Of course we dated for so long, he knew how to read me.
“Exactly. Listen I know…I know it’s weird. We dated. And Harry’s my best friend. But whatever you two want to be, as long as the two of you are happy-“
“What?” Was he saying what I think he was saying? “What are you saying?”
“You don’t think I’m an idiot do you?” Frank asks and I shrug. He huffs before continuing. “I see the way he looks at you Y/N. I know he…it was weird at first. When I realized maybe my best friend liked my girlfriend. But that shit happens all the time. I confronted him once. He said he admired you a lot but it was nothing more than that. I let it go—I think it was easier for me to believe him than call him out on his lie and potentially ruin our friend-“
“So you know why we’re fighting?”
“Not exactly. But I guessed after I saw how angry Harry was. When he found us in bed…I put the pieces together. Sort of felt like it was my fault. That I was the reason you two were fighting. A part of me wasn’t ready to give you up though. I’m glad you made us take space.”
“Yeah…” There are so many thoughts running through my head and it’s hard to turn them into words. I just nod along.
“So you’ll try?” Frank asks.
“I-yeah. I’m just going to…step away” I pat Frank on the arm and walk away. I needed a quiet corner. I pass his girlfriend along the way and we smile cordially. I was happy for Frank. But I can’t believe he knew. Not the whole time, but deep down he did. Was I the only one who didn’t???
The way Harry looked at me. I remember. I never put much thought into it. We were best friends after all. But all along he had loved me from afar. And been there like a friend. It was stupid and crazy that he didn’t just cut me off to move on, but it was also sweet. Pathetically sweet.
I walk out of the flat and find the stairwell. There was finally some air to breathe; I drop my head onto my knees to take some deep breaths. What was I supposed to do now? I knew I had to see Harry sooner or later now that he was back in town. But what if he changed too? What if he has a girlfriend? Did I even want to risk our friendship and try to be something more?
What friendship, I remember. We had nothing right now. Our relationship was in shambles. We hadn’t spoken in 9 months.
“Ugh!” I shout and it echoes in the stairwell. I dust my costume off and open the door back to the hall but I come face to face with Doctor Strange instead. Well, Doctor Strange’s medallion.
“Oh. Hiya,” I saw awkwardly. Harry looked amazing. Even in his costume. He’s grown more handsome in our time away.
“Scarlet Witch,” he looks me up and down.
“Did you know? Is that why you’re Strange?”
“Honestly no,” he steps back. “I had a cape at home, and found a robe so I just went with it…”
“You just had a cape at home? Casually?”
“Yeah,” by now Harry is smiling and staring at me. We were having a casual conversation but his eyes were saying something else. He was really glad to see me. “I’m so glad I bumped into you.”
“In the stairwell,” I arch an eyebrow. “A bird named Frank didn’t tell you did he?”
“Hm,” he pretends to think before taking a Strange pose. “I looked at the possibilities of seeing you tonight and-“
“You’re such a nerd,” I put his arm down that’s waving circles in the air.
We fall into another silence and it’s a bit awkward. But my words are too far away to grasp any, I didn’t know what to say. There was too much and nothing at all suddenly.
“You went to Australia,” I settle on prying what he’s been up to.
“Yeah, yeah!” His eyes light up as he tells me about it. Apparently he’d gone with that girlfriend from New York—turns out she was Australian. They lived together for a bit but her schedule made it hard to go steady. I glean this info while he tells me about what he was doing there and how different the lifestyle was. “It surprised me. I really liked it. I think you would have too.”
“Seems lovely,” I smile. “You glow when you talk about it.”
Harry blushes. “Yeah I…it was the step away I needed. There’s a lot of bloody space in Australia, I just felt so free there.”
“I’m happy for you,” I say honestly. Harry actually seemed brand new. I ache a little that he’d done all this changing; what if I was a castaway in his big change.
“Yeah. Thanks.” He smiles, his dimples make an appearance. “M’glad to be home though.”
“Yeah,” I sigh. “Me too. I love America but I’m home on British soil.”
That makes Harry laugh. Then more silence. Jeez what could I say. This was so awkward!
“Should we go back in?” Harry nods to the door. I hesitate, I thought we were going to talk talk. Isn’t that why he found me out here?
Unless I really was in Harry’s past; he didn’t think we were worth reconciling. Maybe we were just going to be friendly now. Oh that hurts.
“Why not,” I walk ahead so I can mask my expression into something pleasant. I was Scarlet bloody Witch. Turns out Harry wasn’t the Vision I thought he was going to be. I was going to be fine.
“So you seeing anyone?” Harry asks casually as we walk back in. The noise is louder and I barely make his question out.
“Ah no,” I can’t look him in the eye. “Not right now.”
No comment from him. Oh my god I had to get away from this constant awkward energy.
“I’ll catch up with you later then? I see some friends there I haven’t spoken to…”
Harry looks to where I point. His brows furrow for a brief moment before he slips on an easy smile. “Talk later!”
I look for him a little later after I’ve cleared my head. I see him with Frank’s girlfriend. Was he in love with her now? The thought flashes in my brain so quickly I’m surprised by the emotion it pulls up. What was wrong with me!?
I had to slow down on the drinks. And maybe this headpiece was shrinking my brain cells. Why did I think such a horrible thought after Harry was so nice to me?
You’re jealous.
I couldn’t be though. Could I? This wasn’t the Harry I knew. How could I be?
I move towards where I remember the toilets to be. I could get out of this headpiece, splash some water on my face. Factory reset my stupid brain.
“Oh-‘scuse me!” I bump into someone—Harry coming out of the bathroom.
“Harry I-“ I turn back to where I swear I just saw him.
“Frank dropped cream cheese on my cape that menace,” Harry shows me the spot. “It barely came out.”
“Did you dab at it?” I inspect it. “Let’s see if we can get it out.”
He turns back and I follow him into the bathroom. I close the door and suddenly the loud noise muffles into a quieter environment. It emphasizes our silence.
“The cheese is like, in the threads.” I use my finger to scrub the cloth. “Frank can be so clumsy.”
“He’s like a child with finger foods,” Harry says. His voice rumbles through his chest to me. It’s then I realize, he was nearly touching it to my back—I’d draped his cape over the both of us.
I blink up at him and he must realize because he steps back. “Sorry, let me take this off. Might be easier.”
“No that’s alright,” I say but I take it from him happily detached.
He watches me clean it after offering assistance and being rejected. I was used to spot cleaning things out of my costumes, I’d gotten good at it.
“Here you go,” I give it to him after dabbing it as dry as I could.
“Wow, thank you.” He examines the spot. “That’s nearly gone.”
“Nearly?” I squint at it and he laughs.
“Yeah it’s gone, you’re the wizard!” He extends the cape over my shoulders.
“Actually it should be sorcerer,” I say. “I’ve already got a cape!”
“But it’s so short!”
“Fine,” I pull it tighter around my shoulders and the comfort of Harry it carried. “I’ll keep this on! See ya!”
He laughs but when I go for the door he stops me. “Wait. Y/N wait. Wait. Is…is this how we’re going to be?”
“Huh?” I turn back to him. “Is this how we’re going to be??”
“Yeah like, polite. And you trying to escape me every ten minutes.”
Oh. He noticed.
“Uhm, no?”
“Is that a question?”
“Well,” I bite my lip. I was nervous suddenly, facing this very confident and confrontational and cute as hell Harry. “How do you want to be?”
“How we used to? Best friends?”
“I mean, can we? After everything?”
“I hope so,” Harry runs a hand down his face. “I was too proud the last time you saw me. I said some stuff I shouldn’t have. I’m sorry for what I did to you.”
“No I’m sorry,” I confess, relieved to be able to. “If you were too proud, then I was too confused. I didn’t know what I wanted. I lashed out too, and some of the stuff you said was right.”
“Was it? Say that again please?” Harry gives me a cheeky grin.
“Shut up!“ I hit him on the chest playfully. “That isn’t going to get a repeat.”
“Too bad,” Harry pretends to look upset.
We fall into silence once more but it’s not as awkward. The room is small we just sort of study each other.
“So, friends again?” Harry holds his hand out.
“C’mere you idiot,” I take the step forward and wrap my arms around his waist. I fit here. Right here. Oh my god I missed this.
“Y/N,” Harry squeezes me. “I miss us.”
“I know,” I squeeze him back. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“I’m glad you forgave me,” he whispers back to me.
“I’m glad you forgave me,” I whisper back.
A knock on the door breaks up apart. But we stay arm’s length from one another.
“I can tell you’ve changed,” he taps a knuckle to my nose. “I’m proud of you Y/N. I saw you on TV when I came back. I jumped up so quickly I scared my mum.”
“Aw.” I try not to blush. “You’ve changed too. I like this calm and collected and mature Harry. He’s cool!”
“I was always calm and collected and mature,” Harry says as I open the door. The person on the other side looks between both of us but we’re too busy bantering to notice.
“You think burping at me is funny.”
“It is!” Harry wraps both his arms around my shoulder from behind as we walk.
“So you haven’t actually changed,” I look up at him behind me. “Good to know.”
“Look at us,” Harry says. “Two nexus beings finding each other again.”
“We’ve just altered the timeline becoming friends again!” I laugh.
We bump into Frank then, and he looks visibly relieved that we made up. I can tell by the way he studies us he’s trying to figure out if anything more happened but as Harry keeps his arm draped around me, and teases me like before, I watch his expression clear as he realizes we just made up as friends.
It’s not disappointing. I missed Harry more than I thought, just being able to laugh with him means more to me than any kiss would. I stare at him longer than I should, and when he holds my hand as we leave the party my stomach flutters. But I don’t think too hard about it. He was back in my life. I was happy.
2 months later:
“I brought the good stuff,” Harry holds up three bottles of wine in my doorway.
“Then you better hurry in!” I open the door wider to let him in.
“These are for the lovely host,” Harry hands me a bouquet of flowers when I meet him in the kitchen.
“Oh my god,” I bury my face in them. “These are so lovely. Thank you H.”
I lean up to kiss his cheek. These were the little things that always took me by surprise when Harry did them ever since we started talking again. It reminded me that he did some growing while we were apart.
Not that the old Harry wouldn’t have got me flowers. But he wouldn’t have thought to bring them for me for our belated Christmas party. It was hard to explain, the changes were subtle but Harry was growing into a man. Finally.
“What are you smiling about?” Harry asks.
“I’m making fun of you in my head,” I tell him as I bring out a vase for the flowers.
“Stop that,” he surveys my dinner table. “Or I’ll take those flowers back.”
“No,” I hold them close. “Can you help out with the roast? It just needs to be taken out of the oven.”
“Yeah!” Harry helps me finish up the dinner. It was the week between Christmas and New Year’s and I’d wanted to throw a Christmas dinner for my friends. He agreed to come early for this, but we finish quicker and have a half hour to spare.
“So Y/N,” Harry says suddenly serious after we sit for a break. I still had to get into my outfit but I had to catch my breath first.
“So Harry,” I joke to ease the serious undertone that had creeped in. I stretch my legs out on the sofa. Harry sits on the floor beside me, so I turn to my side so we’re at eye-level.
“Did you hear about Frank?” Harry picks at a stray fibre on the cushion.
“Frank? No? What happened?!”
“Ah,” he leans back and closes his eyes. He says more to himself: “Of course.”
“The suspense is killing me here! Is he cancelling or something?”
I’d only invited Harry, Frank and his girlfriend, my neighbour, and 3 others. Already my neighbour cancelled for being sick. I had too much food for another cancellation.
“He’s engaged Y/N,” Harry finally looks at me. “He proposed on Christmas Eve.”
“Oh!” I stare at Harry, frozen as a roller coaster of emotions rides through my system in 10 seconds. It had been 5 days. “Wha-why didn’t he tell me?”
“I dunno, maybe he was going to tell you in person today?”
“Did he tell you in person?”
“No,” he places a hand on my leg. “He sent a picture. But maybe it’s just given your guys’ history-“
“But we’re old news. History. Literal history. Does he think I’ll be offended?”
“Are you offended?”
I pause. “That he didn’t tell me yeah a bit.”
“Y/N,” Harry shakes my leg. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah I-“ I think about it before I answer. I wasn’t jealous. Frank and I were over. His new girlfriend clearly made him happy—he found what he wanted.
“What?” Harry asks gently.
“I’m not jealous or anything. I don’t care but a small part of me looks back on us and is like…if he wanted to he would. Right?”
“Half your relationship happened when you two were students,” Harry knew what I was talking about.
“That’s true. But we had years after too. It just makes me think how long we held onto each other because we didn’t know better. It took him less than a year to propose to her!”
“Don’t look at it like wasted time-“
“I’m not!” I reassure him. “It was some of the greatest moments of my early 20s with the three of us. I guess when you know, you know.”
“Yeah,” Harry had started rubbing my leg to soothe me. “Good. Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Yeah. M’good thanks for telling me beforehand. You’re a good friend.”
If he hadn’t, I know it would have gotten awkward. Because even though I truly was happy for them, it was a bit awkward to find out and react live like that.
“Just pretend it’s the first time you heard when he tells you?” Harry asks.
“Yeah I won’t blow your cover.” I smile. He doesn’t smile back.
“You’re really over him?” he asks instead. “It doesn’t bother you at all?”
I only realize how seriously he is when I look at him, he still believed I was hung up over Frank?
“Harry what? You know I’m over that. We broke up over a year ago-“
“Yeah but when we came to see you-“
“Oh my god that was just two exes finding comfort in each other! We were both obviously lonely. And confused probably.”
I laugh but Harry doesn’t. His hand on my leg stops and so I lay mine on top of his.
We both know why Harry’s so invested, he’s showing me he still cares. But neither of us make a move. I don’t know why we were equally scared, but we stay that way.
Until my phone buzzes. We jump apart at the sudden sound and I scramble for it to help with the obvious tension that had just filled the air.
“Everyone’s nearly here!” I get up. “I need to get ready! Can you let them in when they arrive?”
“Sure. Yeah, get ready.” Harry waves me off. I rush to my room and slip into the sweater dress I’d left out. I do a quick mascara and blush as I hear the guests arrive. When I come out everyone has a glass of wine and I greet them all with a hug.
“I’m so happy everyone could make it!” I say to the small group. I point out the appetizers and get to mingling. Everyone gets along well and I happily host with some help from Harry. I can sense Frank and his girlfriend, or now fiancé, eyeing me.
At the dinner table everyone tucks in. The drinks flow and so does the conversation. Until Frank clears his throat.
“We have some news,” Frank says. We all look expectantly at him and he holds up his fiancé’s hand. “We got engaged.”
“Oh my gosh! Congratulations!” I gush, with just enough enthusiasm that I can see them visibly relax. Everyone fawns over the ring. I get up to hug them both and say another congrats. I make eye contact with Harry as I sit back down and he anchors me. He was the reason things stay awkward-free. I loved him for that.
The night continues and by the time it’s midnight mostly everyone is drunk. They file out slowly and I’m left with the usual three. Well, four now.
“So when did you tell her?” Frank asks when his fiancé excuses herself before they leave.
“What?” Harry asks.
“Tell me what?” I act equally confused.
“C’mon you two. Harry you told her before we came right?”
“Tell me what?” I ask.
“My news! My engagement! I’m not crazy I know you told her.”
“I didn’t say a word mate,” Harry swears. “Why would I tell her your news?”
Frank looks at me suspiciously but I put on my best innocent face. He shakes his head when we hears his fiancé come back and they leave with a final hug. As soon as the door closes behind them, Harry and I break out into a fit of giggles.
“D’you think he bought it?” Harry whispers.
“I don’t think so.” I whisper back.
“Why are we whispering?”
“I don’t know!” this sends me into another round of laughter.
“Harry I need to get hydrated and go to bed,” I wipe my tears away when I get ahold of myself. “I’m losing it.”
“Here,” Harry gets up from where we’d crouched down to and helps me up. I lean into his chest as we have one last chuckle.
“You get yourself cleaned and I’ll clean up here.”
“No!” I wave his help away. “I’ll clean tomorrow. You can pour another drink if you want. But don’t worry about the mess!”
“Just get in there,” Harry pushes me to the bathroom and I don’t have any fight left in me. I can hear him loading the dishes and I thank the universe for giving me someone like him.
By the time I scrub my day off and change into cozy flannels, Harry had loaded the dishes, put away any leftover food that hadn’t been given away, and wiped down the counters.
“You. Are. An angel.” I put my hands on either side of his face. “I love you.”
The words come out quicker than I could process. We both freeze.
“Uhh,” he coughs out a laugh. I drop my hands. “I am an angel aren’t I?”
“Tonight yeah,” so we were going to play the avoidance card.
It’s not like I’d never said those words to him before. I’d said it a million times. But not since before.
“I’ll just use the toilet myself, before I go.”
“Oh yeah,” I move aside so he can go past. I didn’t want him to go, yet things had taken a turn for the awkward and I felt an anxious energy flood me.
I pick at the dinner table, gathering the spare decorations I’d placed. Giving my hands something to do because Harry was going to come out any second now and I’d have to look him in the face after the moment we just had.
What was wrong with us? We obviously liked the other person! No one was making the first move and everything was just suspended in jello!
That does it, I decide. I was going to give him a piece of my mind!!
“Y/N,” Harry had come out while I was lost in thought. He stands on the other side of the table.
“Are you leaving?” I accuse.
“I was.” He licks his lips and looks away. “But I can’t leave like this. Look.”
He walks around to me and holds me hand. “You know I love you. With my whole heart. I don’t know why I was so weird back then.”
He cups my face, the same way I did before and my mental declarations fall like the last leaves of November. “I love you.”
An emotion sticks in my throat and I try to push it down to ask him as what? What did he love me as? I needed to know. But it’s too big to go down, and my eyes well with tears instead.
“C’mon,” he wipes a stray tear with his thumb. “I’ve said it a million times. You’re not crying are ya?”
“No,” I say as more tears streak down my face. My lip juts out and it makes Harry laugh. He wraps me into him.
“When did you become such a baby?”
“I’m not a baby!” I say into his chest.
“Shh you big baby,” he pats my hair down and it makes me giggle. He pulls me away and grins, he looks extraordinarily beautiful in this moment and I feel my breath catch. “We got a laugh out of her!”
“Leave me alone,” I cross my arms.
His smile fades. “D’you want me to?”
“No!” I hug him again. “I like it here.”
“Y/N-“ he hesitates. I lift my face to look up, resting my chin on his chest. “I can’t lose you again.”
He was rejecting me. He wanted to stay friends. Oh. The tears threaten up again and I take a step back. “Oh.”
“No no,” he pulls me back. “Listen to me. I can’t lose you again. D’you understand?”
His serious gaze disrupts a migration of butterflies somewhere inside me. When did my Harry become this handsome gentleman?
When you let him go.
I battle my thoughts as they try sabotage the good thing in front of me.
“What?” Harry cups my cheek. He knew the internal battle going on of course.
“I don’t,” I close my eyes against his gentle touch. “I don’t want to hold you back.”
“Are you mental? You make me want to be better Y/N. I wouldn’t be who I am without you.”
“Really?” I ask. His forehead touches mine.
“Really,” he swipes another tear that had fallen without permission. “You’re everything to me Y/N. I want you to be around all the time. You don’t know how many times when I was in Australia I wanted to pick up my phone and send you something I knew you would find funny. It was painful every time I could. I don’t ever want to lose you ever again.”
“Me neither,” I blubber. I felt the same way when I was in America.
“You’re crying a lot for a nice moment,” Harry teases. “Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Yes!” I cry/laugh. “I don’t know why I’m being so emotional!”
He presses his lips gently to my cheeks. I’m light-headed as his lips move down to my own. I’ve never felt more complete than in this moment. I’ve never felt more whole in my life. It feels like coming home after a long journey, like finding your person in a crowd and saying ah there you are. It was better than being on stage with the sound of applause deafening your eardrums. It was everything.
1-ish year later:
Harry clutches my hand as we rush to the church, running late because he had woken up with a blemish that he’d made worse the more he tried to take care of it. I tried not to get annoyed, instead I lent him some makeup and we panicked all the way here.
“Has it started?” Harry shouts back at me as we climb the steps. I check the time, by some miracle we were only 6 minutes late.
“Probably!” I say. I was disgustingly out of breath but Harry waits for me at the top. We enter the lobby and peek into the ceremony. Frank stands up front but there’s buzzing in the pews. “Oh thank god!”
“Perfect place to do it,” Harry jokes as he opens the door and we walk in. Frank looks relieved when he spots his best man walking to him. He waves at me and I mouth good luck to him.
I wish Harry was beside me as the ceremony starts. Frank tears up as his bride walks up the aisle and it’s crazy to me how I once upon a time thought that would be me walking up to him one day. Harry catches my eye and squints, I was tearing up. Because now I imagined walking up to him one day. The true love of my life.
Vows are exchanged and the newlyweds dance down the aisle. We see them off and when I turn to Harry he kisses me with a ferocious passion.
“Woah,” I pat his tie when I catch my breath. “What was that for?”
“I just love you so much,” he kisses my forehead. “I’m going to marry you one day.”
I melt at his words, it had been over a year since we got together but I fell more and more in love with him every day. I can’t believe he was right there all along and I found him so late.
“Let’s get in there and do it now,” I say mock-seriously. But Harry believes me.
“Really? Now?!”
“No,” I peck his cheek. “But I’m just waiting for the question. Then I will happily marry you anywhere.”
“There’s a question?” Harry plays stupid.
“I’ll let you figure that one out!” I walk down the steps towards our ride. We had a reception to get to. On time.
The reception is at a gorgeous venue nearby that sparkles on every surface. I congratulate the newlyweds a million times and watch my drink since I told Harry he didn’t have to drive. He was a funny drunk, very affectionate, and I didn’t mind.
“There’s my future wife,” Harry locates me near the end of the night.
“We were just dancing together,” I put my arm around him.
“Itsa last slow song,” he pulls me to the dancefloor where all the couples sway with each other. I put my arms around Harry and do the same b
“You’re pretty drunk,” I whisper in his ear.
“I know. Last drink.” He slurs. “Y’know I love you s’much. I’m keeping you forever.”
“That’s a relief,” I tease. “I thought we had an expiry.”
“No!” Harry pulls back enough to look at me. “Never!”
“I know,” I twirl the hair at the nape of his neck. “It’s forever.”
“Yeah,” Harry gazes at me lovingly and I admire him the same.
“I’m so lucky to have you,” I tell him. “I’m so lucky you stuck around.”
“I’m the lucky one,” Harry slurs.
“Let’s dance,” I rest my head on his chest and we continue swaying. His heart beats steadily underneath and I’m so grateful for him. I feel like going back just to tell myself that I would be dancing romantically with my best friend at my boyfriend’s wedding in a few year’s time. That everything I knew was about to crumble underneath me but I would build it back up stronger than ever. I wish I could tell her to not be afraid, two was company and it would be the best kind yet.

An essay about Signalis

I think about myself a lot.
That probably is unsurprising. I have, to put it lightly, a high opinion of myself. If the black guy from Serenity was gonna stab me and ask what my sin was, Pride would probably be the one for me. But more that just thinking “I’m the best” (which I do, every day), I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want in my life and how my self-image is compared to how I present myself.
This frequently escalates around this time of year because of several reasons. One, I’m done with school, so I just have more time in general. And two, it’s Pride Month. Before we go further, no, this isn’t me coming out as something (I have a ton of memes if I ever need to, believe me), but I do think a lot about my identity in relation to gender and sexuality probably more than the average guy. I see memes from trans friends that go something like “do you think about becoming the opposite gender the normal amount? ‘Yeah I guess.’ The normal amount is zero.” This always strikes me as disingenuous because contemplating your own identity seems essential to being happy as you are. If you’re not thinking in present day present time about what your concept of self revolves around, what’s the point?
In Signalis, you are not the person you think you are. The game starts with you being told “Remember our promise” which, uh, you don’t recall any promises, but you somehow recall the face of this woman and she seems important so better go do that promise. You get a picture of what looks like the two of you together (ignoring the face that in your memories she has white hair and in the picture black, and you’re a robot now) so ok, you’ve got her name, gotta go find her.
As the game goes on you learn that the woman in the picture, Alina Seo, is not the woman you are looking for. You are also not the woman in the picture. You’re also not the other woman in the picture. Or the one in your memories, which is to say, your memories are not yours.
Technically, the woman in your memories is you, in the sense that physically you’re identical LSTR units. But Elster, the woman in your memories who physically knew the woman with white hair, Ariane, isn’t you. You just look like her, because you’re both robots. This probably seems confusing if you haven’t played the game, which is both intentional on my part (hey you gotta read this essay I wrote about Signalis and how I tie this shit together) but also is just how the game is presented. There are no clear answers, especially to questions of identity and personhood. About a third of the way through the game, you’re thrown down an elevator shaft, only to fall onto a pile of bodies that are... you. Just dozens of identical LSTR units, all thinking they’re the Elster in your dreams. Some of them got further still, lying dead around your crashed spaceship, where Ariane is inside. But they’re not you.
Right?
In 2016 my sister came out as trans. This was not the first time I had thought about the question of my own gender identity, but it definitely forced me to face the question with a lot more that I previously had. For a semester or two in college, today me would have called then me an “egg”, someone who didn’t understand their relationship with gender/someone who was trans but didn’t realize it yet. Look at r/egg_irl and you’ll see at least 5 memes that I would go “yep, that was me back then.”
Today I’m still cis (enough) and very comfortable with my expression of gender and identity, but I said at multiple times during that period that I “was a lesbian in a man’s body” and didn’t really think much of it. I even, for a time, was mildly transphobic, until a good friend asked me how people being trans affected me, whereupon I was like “huh guess it doesn’t, live and let live I guess.” But the question remained: what would me as a woman be like? Would I be me still?
Growing up on the internet in the late 2000s-early 2010s the phrase “there are no girls on the internet” was a cringey refrain that I’m sure is familiar to a lot of you. As a cis straight white guy, the internet of the time was essentially tailor made for me. I never had to deal with issues of people being like “zomg a girl show boobs,” I was just there. I’d see people being gross and feel “well that’s not cool but doesn’t affect me,” and continue on my life. But what if it did affect me? What if I had been born a girl, gay, something other than what I was? What if I chose to become one of those things?
Signalis deals with issues of sexuality and gender in strange ways. Anyone that knows about the game likely knows it’s been embraced by the LGBTQ community for its portrayal of many of this issues and how it embraces its own identity. Elster and Ariane are lovers in a world that forbids even their friendship. Ariane especially faces persecution for who she is, being isolated early in her life, being bullied and tormented by her peers, and choosing a likely lethal option of “freedom” over living the rest of her life as just another cog in an oppressive machine. Rather than following her orders to ignore the LSTR unit assigned as her partner, Ariane embraces the “machine”, striking a friendship with her, which turns into a true romantic relationship. Again, I’m not gay, but I’ve heard how many of my friends have gone through the same issues being gay or trans themselves, so the popularity of the game among that community tracks.
But again, the protagonist of Signalis is not Elster, at least not physically. As the game reveals to you, Ariane and Elster were sent on a journey to find extrasolar planets, and after 10 years of looking, their ship started to fail. It’s heavily implied that their journey was doomed from the start, and that Ariane knew that, but chose this life anyway. While the two women work to keep their ship in operation, its radioactive reactor begins to leak, and Ariane gets sick. Their journey comes to an end, 20 years in and over 10 years after they were told to “spare you[rself] a slow and agonizing death”, Elster puts Ariane into a cryogenic chamber before dying herself, no longer able to function. You find the original Elster’s body. You aren’t her.
So why do you keep going?
One of my formative experiences in high school was learning one of my internet friends and fellow Bionicle comedy writers was a woman. I assumed that the group of us writing were all guys, Bionicle as a thing was heavily marketed to young men, so my base assumption was that everyone on this forum was a guy like me. Learning that was not the case made me question assumptions I had had. How did my relationship with this person change, now that I knew our experiences were different? How did my own prejudices and assumptions influence how I interacted with our common interest? What would I do in the same scenario?
It would take me many years to even come up with semi-adequate answers to these questions, as going to an all-boys Catholic school was not the most conducive environment to answering questions about gender. At the root of all these questions, however, was a fear. If I were a girl, would I still be me? My identity and pride in myself, would those still exist? Would I have lost everything that made me me if a coin had happened to flip on a different side? In her coming out message to me and my brother, my sister made sure to emphasize that she was still her, her interests were still the same and she was still the same person. My concerns about gender and sexuality were likely born from a similar place. Would changing one aspect of who I was change how everyone interacted with me? If so, would this change be good?
While in Signalis, you are not searching for Alina Seo, she is important to you. Your template for your Replika self was based on a “comrade” of Alina’s, and while your original name is never directly mentioned, you get a pretty good idea of who you were. Like with Ariane, your template and Alina were romantically involved. Like with Ariane, you were not supposed to be. Your and Ariane’s appearances being similar to those from decades past is not coincidental. You are physically based off of that woman’s identity, and Ariane and Alina, while both humans, are implied to be descendants of the Empress, a psychically powerful human capable of terraforming planets and bringing humanity together. Let’s not get into that.
As an LSTR unit, you are compelled due to a psychic link with Ariane to find her, to remember your promise. As someone with the memories of Elster, this isn’t just a compulsion, this is you making up for your failure previously. Your “promise”, as we come to learn, is to allow Ariane to die, and by that I mean to kill her. You’ve killed before, people that you might have cared about too, but this is different. This is killing your reason for being. Killing is your reason for being. What happens if you fail to do so? What happens if you succeed?
Elster is a machine, a Replika, a facsimile of humanity constructed in the model and thought processes of a human to act in predictable ways. Ariane broke her out of this programming and gave her a new identity. As an LSTR unit, you are given that same identity. Is it yours? Do you accept it? There are multiple endings to Signalis, some of which result in you saying no, you don’t. This is presented as a valid conclusion to your story. There is no good ending or bad ending. There’s just life and your choices.
I come back to the question of choice a lot, as anyone raised Catholic likely does. The idea of free will and if it really exists is something that has driven people mad. The questions of what brain chemistry and biology really mean for choices are questions for people that care about those things. My identity is of a 30-year-old cis straight man. I could change that, but it wouldn’t be me. That’s fine. I accept that as I age I’m going to change. Me at 20 would not immediately get what me now wants and why I do what I do. I’m unlikely to understand why me at 40 is making the decisions I do. There is no good ending or bad ending. There’s just life and my choices.
At the end of my playthrough of Signalis I got the Promise ending, where I do indeed kill Ariane, then die next to her. I knew prior to beating the game the vague concepts of the endings and how, generally, to get them. I optimized my playthrough to get that ending because I saw it as the most fulfilling ending, even without knowing the context behind it. Having played the game, I agree with my choice and with that of Elster. But ever so often, I look at Signalis and wonder if I want to try again, for one of the other endings, or for the 4th, secret ending, where you sacrifice yourself so Elster and Ariane can dance once more together. Are those better choices? What would Elster do? Where do her choices lead her, if she knew everything that could happen?
Where would mine?

RETIREMENT CHRONICLES 2.025
I often write these things at the end of semesters—Fall, Spring, and Summer—plus after Winter Break because my life will be ever tied to the school year. Plus I have tried to follow the sage advice to use the semester format to organize projects, long enough to accomplish something, short enough to provide some focus. I have often used these reflections to grade myself—on health care, fiction—reading and writing, and music plus an overall assessment of retirement.
The summer break with only occasional check backs to school led to an interesting shift. When I left my day job on 9/1/23, it felt like I was working less rather than being retired. Now I feel retired but picking up some interesting, rewarding work despite the fact that it is at school where I am devoting my creative energy, so that my fiction is on hold and reading, like playing music, is recreational more than a focus as it was in the summer. I am allowing myself to go to lunch most Wednesdays and that somehow changes how the time on campus feels.
It’s four weeks into the semester, passed the drop date for courses. So I do need to withdraw from MUSIC (playing) because I am just not focused on it to make specific sustained progress. I play often and try things out and have new songs and arrangements under my belt. But that’s just fun, not systematic.
MUSIC (watching/writing) continues with most of the same old compulsivity, but that too has a subtle retired, not simply less. I do watch many streams and do like having them as writing prompts, but there are sets every week I probably would have watched and wrote about last year.
FICTION/reading is less compulsive. I’m in the middle of three historical fiction series, two mysteries, for which at least two are particularly well done and even literary. So they take some attention that I sometimes don’t get to of an evening. FICTION/writing is on hold as I have turned t
TEACHING to adjust to a very different student body in my class for first years. I have completely reorganized the topics to meet them where they are and to take advantage of what they bring to the conversation. It’s an interesting challenge and I like how I’m meeting it, but it’s more demanding. My other class is familiar in format, though drawing on new material each time. I’m about ready to reprepare for that class in the Spring and to organize a new class on my familiar themes of Place which will include Spring Break in Leiden.
If TEACHING, not FICTION (writing), is my creative outlet and more time consuming, somehow it still seems like I’m more retired, not simply working less. Equally my advising/administrative project has more student time involved. That makes it more rewarding, but it feels easier as that project settles in more organically.
HEALTH CARE though, if anything, remains up a notch from Summer. I’m working out a third day a week. Our walks are daily but more social—with one another or with a neighbor, her dog, and her baby in a stroller. Home yoga is even spottier than guitar playing, though I have a new stretching regime based on ELDOA.
I write now to recognize these shifts and consolidate them. I’m learning and growing with these changes.

I have just read a post shared by a former classmate, and that same post shared by another, both of which are delayed for a year or a semester to graduate. I feel that they also wanted to reach the end of their college journey just like mine which was bound to culminate by July. But here's my little perspective as someone finally ending her 19 years of schooling. My first two years in college was set online due to the pandemic. We turned into hybrid setup on my third year, and finally went to full onsite classes on my final year. I did not get much of full college experience because most of the fun were squeezed into my last two years. If given a chance, I would have loved to extend another year with my friends (they won't like the idea haha) because my journey with them was really fun. It is as if I am just getting the hold of being a teenager when I am already 23 because I didn't really enjoy much of my high school days (entirely centered with me studying and studying). This college, I was able to study and enjoy. I was able to hang out and became more independent. When they say high school was the most memorable and enjoyable time of their life, I would like to differ mine. So to my former classmates who cannot graduate this year, just enjoy and take your time. I know we have different courses and sets of hardships, but at least, try to make the most out of it. One day, you'll also prepare for your graduation photoshoot and think of what to wear on your graduation day. One day, you'll be there. And just like what I wrote in my letter to you guys, I'll always be rooting for you.

May
hello friends! sorry i am late because i had so much going on by the end of May/start of June including end of semester exams that i completely forgot to write a post in time (typical me lol) but worry not, May post is gonna be filled with so many stories!!!
so for this May i'd like to nickname it as Full of Friends May Mayhem because i felt so happy throughout the entire May as i spent lots of quality time with my best friends and experienced many exciting new things 🥺💙
first up, watching How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies หลานม่า with soon-to-be doctor, Chintia! it's been long since i saw her because we were both very busy, me with school and her with finishing med school national competency exams... we had lunch together and spent literal hours chatting about anything and life updates. then we watched หลานม่า to see Billkin and Tu in action - they were amazing actors! the film itself was great, it made me miss my grandma so much, but i'm familiar with grief that i only cried a bit at the ending. the scores are heavenly but i still can't find it anywhere online huhu
next is Ortho Ul's social charity and gathering at Bali! this will be my second time joining a department event but first time to have it in such big scale (every resident from every active year, all lecturers, staffs, and even alumni joined the trip!) and it was awesome!!! 3 days and 2 nights filled with fun, really! day one we had the social charity at a junior high school in Kuta and then a 4-hour bus ride to Menjangan (where our resort is located!) day two was for snorkeling session (that i bailed out because i was worried my thalassophobia would be triggered) and i spent time island hopping instead! day three was our journey back to Denpasar and then flight to Jakarta. our schedule was sooo packed and we lacked sleep but enjoying the time together was priceless experience. on day 2 we got to showcase our 'talent' and did a short musical as an introduction of us the new recruits 😂 i remember eleven of us still making time to rehearse for the musical between so many assignments and projects and other duties... as the gathering has pirate as the theme, i made sure to incorporate Petualangan Sherina soundtracks and also pirate themed film scores, i wrote the screenplay, and designed some of the choreos. and it all came together nicely with our lecturers praising our performance 🥺
third is Ortho Ul 2018-2019 graduates' farewell lunch! this one was so enjoyable as well, our recently graduated orthodontists seniors treated us lunch at Park Hyatt hotel, i tried and loved all the food 🤭 there were also game and photo sessions, i feel so welcomed into this huge family 🥺 honestly getting into postgrad feels like entering a whole new world, so many new people, new connections, unexpected but still pleasant surprises!
these days i find it extremely easy to find happiness wherever i go, in whatever i do, and with whoever i'm with... no matter how trivial things can always find its way to put a smile on my face 😂 getting consecutive green lights on the way to school, arriving on time at the MRT platform as the train came, finding cool shades under the trees, spending time with my classmates even though while being under so much pressure, finding new film scores albums with 10/10 tracks, the feel of the wind on my face every time i ride back home, days filled with laughter and tranquility and calmness, discovering my old passion for kdrama (you all NEED to watch Lovely Runner, and meet my daughter Kim Hyeyoon and my son Byun Wooseok the loveliest people ever), interacting with my international mutuals, my fav songs came on shuffle, trying good food at new places, coldplay new era is coming!!! life is full of wonder, alhamdulillah...
things i've never dared to dream are approaching, and i'm super excited of what's to come (lots!!!) the best is yet to come insyaAllah 🤩 i hope life is also as beautiful as it is to you, my friends. see you on the next post! 💙
