LIFE'S HARD WHEN YOU'RE INLOVE ─

─ WITH RIN ITOSHI !!

━ 3:00 PM

"Are you ready?" A voice called out to you. You looked over your shoulder and was greeted with Rin Itoshi, standing right behind you with his bag in hand.

"Mhm." You hummed, nodding your head and began to walk, him closely following behind.

You both made it out of the classroom, following behind the small crowd of students as they made their way out of the school, meeting up with friends on the way.

Though one thing is highlighted in your mind, A trip to a candy store. To you, it sounds like heaven.

DAY 1

-CANDY STORE

The trip was a bit time-consuming, but the ride was indeed comforting. It was silent, but you wouldn't trade the moment for anything.

After a small walk, the shop came into view. A huge smile formed on your face, entering the shop without hesitation. The male behind, stared at your back, not saying a word but instead decided to witness you in your excitement.

The inside looked far more amazing than the outside. Other students were roaming around, with their group looking around and buying candies of their choice. Without a word, you as well began to roam the store, leaving poor Rin to chase behind you.

Your eyes admired all of the sweet treats, planning on buying them after you get what you came for. Seems like Rin noticed.

"You're here for a job, not for a treat." He clarified.

You pouted at his words, turning to face him.

"Okay but after I'm finished with my job, then I'll take the treats, right now I'm figuring out what treats to choose for later!" You exclaimed.

He sighed at your words.

"Then focus on the job first."

"Okay fine.."

Your eyes left the sweets and landed on the decorations around. It all fell into place perfectly, but one stood out and draw you in, slowly.

Rin noticed your sudden movement and followed behind, curious to see what's taking over your mind this time.

He stopped right beside you, stealing a glance at your face, trying to figure out what you're looking at. The decorations.. what about them?

"I've chosen a dessert." You said.

His eyebrow raised in confusion.

"What did you choose?" He asked.

Your finger pointed to the dessert, his eyes followed and his face dropped.

"..Coffee jelly?" He thought out loud, which caused you to nod.

"Yes, I wanna make coffee jelly." You stated.

"Don't you think, that's a huge drop from your favorite dessert?" He asked.

Your eyes grew in size, listening to his words.

"You remembered it?"

Rin's lips parted, realizing he's just outed himself on accident. Before he could make up an excuse you spoke first.

"Bavarian Cream compared to Coffee jelly is a drop, I guess making wise, but it kinda reminds me of myself.." You said, muttering the last part.

"Huh? Yourself? With dessert?" His questions came out one by one.

Your eyes darted towards the floor, realizing that you just openly compared yourself to DESSERTS and HE HEARD.

"What are you talking about?" You suddenly asked, catching him off guard, and confused.

"Huh?" He asked, causing you to shrug your shoulders.

"Well then, I found my dessert, now it's time for treats!" You said, running off, him chasing behind, sighing.

You got a bag and began to load it up with different sorts of treats. Rin watched you for a while until you pointed him out.

"Don't you want some as well?" You asked him, shifting your neck up to watch him.

"No, all of these treats isn't good for you anyway." He said out loud, besides the last part, which thankfully you didn't hear.

You huffed at his negative response though, grabbing a second bag and stuffed candy in their as well.

"What are you doing?" He asked you.

"Nothing, I just wanted more candy, that's all."

And to that, he simply hummed, watching you in your prime moment.

You stopped in your tracks, placed the candy on the table beside you and pulled out your phone. Why would you turn down the opportunity to show off your favorite place? With that thought, you got your camera app open and snapped a picture! But..

"Oh, you got in my pic.." You muttered, causing Rin to turn in your direction.

"Sorry.." He muttered.

"Do you want me to delete it? I'm just taking a picture to post on my Twitter." You told him.

He thought on it for a bit and to your surprise..

"Keep it. Post it if you want to." He stated.

Your jaw dropped a bit.

Post it? POST HIM? Well of course you will do that! With another picture taken, you uploaded it, sharing your moment on the small side of Twitter.

And with that, your candy adventure continued for a while.

Rin wondered for a while, how long are you both gonna stay here for? he checked his phone and noticed the time, 5:09PM.

"Y/N, I think it's time we get home. If you want, I can walk you there." He said.

Your now four bags of candy in your hand, moved with you as you spun around, hearing his words, especially the last part. Walk you home.

You slowly nodded at his words, paying for your huge treat and with that, the candy adventure came to an end.

━ 6:00 PM

The sound of footsteps stopped as they both arrived in front of your stop.

You turned to face the boy, opening your mouth to thank him but instead, his phone was the first thing you saw.

"Let's exchange numbers, this way we don't need to wait to communicate in school."

So into your sweet mind, you honestly forgot for a moment that the reason you're with Rin right now, is for a project.

For a project.. So calm your racing mind! You stared at his phone, then back up to him. He wants your number.. but only for project talks..

Slowly, you took his phone and entered your digits on his phone and then returned it back into his hands.

He stared at your number for a while, then back up at you.

"Okay, I'm gonna go." He said.

And with that, slowly, he turned around and slowly made his way out of the building, that is until you stopped him.

"Wait!" You exclaimed, jogging up to him.

he turned around and was greeted with a bag of candy.

"I lied, all of this wasn't for me, this bag is for you. It has most of my favorited in it so you have to take it, for the project." you stated, giving him the bag and made your way inside the apartment, leaving him with a bag of treats outside.

On your end, your roommates were in the living room, staring at you.

"Oh hi." You stated, making your way inside.

"We need to have a talk." Reo stated.

"What?" you asked him.

He seemed so.. serious..

"..I bought you both some candy." You muttered, showing up the bags.

Seishiro's eyes lit up, making his way towards you while Reo's face softened.

They both took the candy, admiring it in silent.

"So the talk?"

"Nevermind.. You can go." Reo said.

With that, you left the duo alone, making your way into your bedroom.

"What were you gonna talk about?" Seishiro asked the boy.

"Nothing really, was just gonna force your to out the truth about her feelings, but her gift blinded my evilness for a bit."

'Oh.."

You changed out of your uniform, got ready for bed and lay flat on your bed, staring at your blank phone screen.

You wondered if he will text you.. Well, he does have his own life to live so you don't expect one so suddenly but still, the thought roams your mind like crazy.

Ping!

Your phone vibrates in your hand, you turn it on and see a message from an unknown number.

.

That conversation just now, for some reason it warmed your heart that he was just curious about you, and the way he slowly opened up to you.

At 12:52 AM, you were smiling at your screen and slowly drifted away to the dreamland.

DAY 2

-HORROR MOVIE

━ 6:00 AM

Your mind rewind back to that message over and over. Horror movie.

Totally you're excited for that! It shows on your face right now!

"Do you need to shit or..?" Reo asked, passing by your room.

"I'M OKAY."

"OKAY.. I can hear you loud and clear." He muttered, walking away.

Your head up in the clouds, the trip to school was just a blur until Seishiro made it known.

"Well this is your stop, bye." And then the duo walked away, leaving you all alone.

You made your way into the classroom and was greeted with empty seats. Makes sense, it's quite early after all.

You sighed, making your way to your seat and slowly slumping over it, resting your head on this desk.

Your head perked up at the noise and you read the notification:

"Who are you texting?"

"HUH?"

The sudden voice of Meguru right behind you scared you out of your skin.

Happy with your reaction, Meguru pulled back from his spot next to your ears and gave you a bright smile.

"Good morning!! You seem happy on that phone, are you getting sweets?" He started.

You stared at him with a blank face, then shifted your eyes slightly at Rin. He's on his phone but probably off the chat.

You sighed, then answered your friend's question.

"In fact, yes I am. But none for you."

"WHY NOT?"

"Don't yell Meguru.." Yoichi mumbled, sitting in his seat.

"Because it's for my project." You explained, technically it is true..

He huffed at your words and made it to his seat.

"How's your project coming along?" You asked Yoichi.

His head perked up in the direction of your voice and began to speak.

"It was a bit hard at first because basically our hobbies are similar but it's working out now. How about yours?"

"I'm learning new things about Rin."

Rin..

"WAIT!" Meguru shouted.. again.

He grabbed your shoulders and started to shake the life out of you!

"CAN YOU-"

"YOU TOOK A PICTURE OF HIM!" He YELLED out loud..

The class got quiet and eyes were now on you both.. including his own.

"CAN YOU SHH??!" You quietly yelled, removing his hands off your shoulders.

You stole a glance at Rin and caught him staring at you.

Oh goodie!

━ 4:00 PM

"I have to do something.." Rin mumbled.

You looked up at him, following closely behind.

"What do you have to do? We can't watch the movie?" You asked.

"No.. I just have to give an excuse to not attend practice today."

You stopped in your tracks. Rin noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing.." You mumbled.

He's sacrificing his number 1 for.. you?

It just caught you off guard..

"Shopping time?" You asked, waiting out for him near the gate.

He nodded at your words and the closest convenience store was your next stop!

Just like yesterday, the walk was calming, no awkward tension anywhere.

"Are you going to buy anything there?" You asked him.

"I don't plan to, I already have the bag you gave me yesterday." He stated.

"Oh yeah I forgot about that." You mumbled.

Then out of the blue, you saw his hand enter your view.

You stared at it for a bit, then at him. Slowly, he opened his hand and you were greeted with one of the candies you gave him.

A small gasp left your mouth, as you stared at his hand. No words was exchanged, but a smile was formed, for both you and him as your hand gently touched his, taking the candy from him.

The atmosphere around you both after that kind gesture was calming but quiet. A feeling you hoped that lasted forever.. the more you walked beside him, you wondered what went through his mind to do that, hopefully its kind thoughts in his mind.

Sadly, the walk came to an end as our eyes landed on the store.

Soon, he will be in your room.. again.

Onward Fan Art Shout Out - 14

Theme: Desserts! 🍰 🧁 🍪

It might not seem like it at first glance but even desserts can be art too!

Just about once every week or so when I look in the Onward tag on instagram there's usually a post in the mix that contains one or more of the following: frosting, sugar, chocolate, icing, candy...you name it!

But there are two other important things I see in those posts as well, and that is—talent and Onward!

Not only are the desserts I find so amazing (like for real some of them I could never make myself! they're so extreme!), but the thought, time, and dedication to make each of them in the first place shows me that Onward is not invisible and very much appreciated, that all these people who make desserts see how special it is! and actually choose to highlight what stood out about it to them!

So Quest Masters...let's give a hand and credit to all of these chefs and bakers, for crafting all this Onward culinary art!

and if any of us want an Onward-themed birthday sometime or dessert ideas for a future Onward anniversary or a potential fandom in-person get-together, hopefully these choices serve as great inspiration!

sugar.by.jeanette - ok but to recreate Wilden's bottom half like this definitely takes a lot of time and effort! like this isn't your typical round or square cake! this cake has a lot of different parts to it to bake and put together! it blows me away!

macarons_by_agatha - fact: I love a good macaron every once in a while. and the purpley pink and blue color shades of these onward macarons are positively gorgeous! also the added shapes and images on them are very adorable too!

pnw_neen - it would be just a crime not to include cupcakes in this post! so here they are! it honestly might be the lighting but I love the sparkling and glittering effect the frosting of these cupcakes are giving off! it speaks magic! also it's blue you can't go wrong with that!

kooky.crumbsandcrafts - wow lots of 3 year old birthday desserts on this post apparently! yay for 3 year olds!! thank you for loving onward! it means so much! anyway...ahhhhh! these are beautifully colored and beautifully drawn cookies! and it's done repeatedly too! the re-drawing on each cookie is very nicely done!

cherrycakeco - okay...this recreation of the Lightfoot house is undeniably AMAZING, like this cake artist nailed down lots of great detail from Ian's window to the mushroom roof to even their yard! I wanna say you could easily confuse this as an actual 3D model! that's how remarkably real it looks! 👩🏻‍🍳

graysons.mom.makes.cakes - not to be confused with the pretzel wizard staff with the strawberry phoenix gem, this is a chocolate and buttercream cake with glass candy! the detail on the staff is amazing and the glass candy makes a really great gem texture!

kyscakes3 - the curse dragon!! they put the freakin CURSE DRAGON on this cake! the design and placement of it around the circular surface is so well done! and the colorful gems provide such a nice touch too! oh and the frosting looks absolutely yummy!

Latest OC ask for Max, Melony, Lake and whoever else you'd like to include: 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 15, 25, 31, 49, 50. Obviously feel free to include or omit as you like

1. Do they have any crafting hobbies?

Max generally likes making gifts for Daniela. I don’t know that that counts as a hobby per-say, but it is crafting, technically, and he does it often enough that it should be considered one. So I’m counting it.

Melony doesn’t really have any crafting hobbies (unless you count crafting desserts). Though she does enjoy drawing sometimes.

Using the term crafting incredibly loosely here, but Lake has made a hobby out of making/customizing skateboards for people. They just find it a nice pass time and it puts extra money in their pocket for drugs.

2. Do they wear perfume/cologne? If so what scents do they prefer?

Max doesn’t wear cologne, but he absolutely would go ham with something like Axe Bodyspray. As in, he would make himself smell like a middle school boys locker room and live his life like that isn’t an issue, and someone needs to tell him to stop. It doesn’t cover up the smell of cigarettes like he thinks it does, though.

Lake wears perfume on occasion, when they wanna feel more feminine (or forgot to shower). They’re a fan of the sweet smelling, cotton candy or vanilla-y types of perfume. Catch them smelling their own clothes because of it. (For the record, though, they also use a lot of Axe)

Melony isn’t really a perfume/cologne person. If she was, though, she’d love the flowery perfumes. Lavender and rose type of scents would be her thing. Granted, girl smells a lot like a bakery most of the time anyway.

6. If they were badly injured, and for whatever reason couldn't go to a hospital, who would they go to for help?

Melony would honestly just try to find Mia or Alcina. More likely she’d go for Mia, because Mia could probably help her more, but Alcina is lowkey a huge comfort for Melony, and if she’s really hurt she’d want that comfort.

Max has to be like… bleeding out before he tries to find help. Like “Oh, I’m going to die.” levels of injury. And even then, he’s more likely to just go into a huge panic and try to find the closest familiar face instead of someone in particular and just hope they actually help him. (Really, he’d want Daniela. But he also knows Daniela isn’t the best person to help with something like that.)

Angela would be Lakes' go-to. In fact, they have gone to Angela with nasty injuries before. It’s helped them learn to deal with broken bones at the very least, but Angela usually ends up driving them to the hospital anyway.

7. Do they have any unusual fears?

Melony’s scared of elevators. Like, “won’t get on one unless she’s forced to” kind of scared. She always feels like they’re going to break down and then she’ll be stuck on it with no way out because there’s no way to call for help, so she’d just be waiting for someone to realize it’s broken. She also thinks they feel small and cramped, and we all know how Melony feels about small spaces. (Jello is another weird fear of hers, but I’ve mentioned that before)

Lake is scared of birds. Not just geese or ostriches that are understandably kind of terrifying, but even birds like pigeons or hummingbirds. Something about the way they stare just makes Lake’s skin crawl. They find them creepy. Like, they can admire that some birds look pretty, but they don’t wanna be near them.

Max doesn’t really have any unusual fears. Though, he’s not a fan of horses. He wouldn’t classify it as a fear, more like a strange discomfort. Something about their faces and the fact they could kill you with one good kick to the head. Like, man loves animals, but horses? No.

9. When they're sick what do they do to feel better?

Melony’s wrapping herself up in a blanket like a cocoon with whatever stuffed animal she has handy. She just wants to lay there, maybe receive some cuddles if Cassandra’s willing. She really just wants to sleep when she’s sick and nothing else.

Max’d probably make some kind of comfort meal for himself. He finds hot foods/drinks help him feel better when he’s sick, so he’d most likely make himself up a grilled cheese and some nice honey tea for lunch. Then go back to ignoring that he feels like trash.

Lake is a simple person. They take a spoonful of cough syrup, call in sick to work, and proceed to stay in bed and either play video games or watch random youtube videos. They just wanna relax.

15. What kind of sense of humor do they have? Or do they have one at all?

Melony has a dominantly childish sense of humor. As in, she finds dumb jokes that only a ten year old could make to be really funny, and she’s kind of embarrassed about it. Not that she doesn’t enjoy an actual thought out joke, though.

Max is, obviously, big into dark humor. He makes dark jokes all the time. But also constent sex jokes. You can argue he either has a mature sense of humor, or the humor of a 12 year old boy, and either way you’re right.

Lake finds any kind of joke funny. As long as it isn’t offensive, and they actually understand it, anyway.

25. Do they have a daily/nightly routine?

For a morning routine, Lake typically wake-n-bakes, has a shower and brushes their teeth, throws on whatever clothes seem clean, then spends roughly an hour and a half doing their make up. Sometimes they even brush their hair. Their nightly routine is mainly just taking said make up off and occasionally taking out their piercings to clean them.

Melony doesn’t have much of a daytime routine, but at night is when she’ll have a long shower to just sort of relax from the day, throw on a nightgown (or one of Cass’s old shirts. Whatever she grabs), say her prayers to Miranda like a good child, and at that point she’s basically ready for bed.

Max doesn’t have much of a routine at all.  He just kind of wakes up and exists with no rhyme or reason.

31. What superpower would you choose for them and what would they choose for themselves? If they have one would they choose something else?

If I could give them superpowers; I think I’d give Melony super strength, for the pure comedy of this tiny woman being able to lift a boulder, Max would get like.. Miranda level shapeshifting, for no particular reason I just think he’d like to freak people out with it, and Lake would get like… spider powers. Because I think they’d enjoy climbing walls and being able to make webs.

If they could choose their powers; Melony would pick invisibility, so she could just disappear when she got overwhelmed. Max would probably pick shapeshifting, if not to fuck with everyone then at the very least to get rid of his dysphoria (and maybe use it for sexy time idk). 49. Do they have trouble keeping their enemies and their friends straight?

Melony doesn’t, but she also doesn’t have a lot of enemies. The only people she really would classify as an enemy are people who have seriously hurt her, or people she cares about, so there’s only like… 3 or 4 people on that list. And it’s very easy for her to tell who her friends are.

For the most part, Max is pretty good at telling his enemies apart from his friends. Really his main struggle at this point is telling if Cassandra and Alcina still count as an enemy to him or not. He wouldn’t consider them friends, but they haven’t been horrible to him either. But their relationships are still complicated. Other than that, he has no problems telling one from the other.

Lake can’t always tell when someone’s their enemy. They understand that people are shitty sometimes, but they can’t always tell when they’re being led on just to be made fun of. They like giving people the benefit of the doubt and it can cloud them knowing the difference between someone making a friendly jab at them, and someone using them for a joke. Not that Lake has a lot of enemies anyway, but still, they’ve gotten hurt by it.

50. What is your favorite thing about them?

For Max, it has to be his character development. My boy went from “Random Maid to ship Daniela with” to having a whole ass personality/backstory/justifiable reasons to be standoffish towards the family. He’s got substance to him now instead of just being the angry person playing off Daniela’s personality. And I’m very proud of him for it.

Lake, honestly, it’s the design. I love it. Their hair, and the make up, and the piercings, the fact they’re as tall as Bela, they look how I wish I look and I love that for them. I also just like the blue and black colour palette they kind of have going on.

I don’t think I really have a favourite thing about Melony. If I have to pick, though, I think it might also be her design. Specifically the face. I like that she’s got a soft face, and I like her eyes, and her freckles. But I really love her as a whole.

and when you do, he would probably ask you to sit on the counter so you can supervise his work, ‘because he has been distracted. in reality, is just a way of making you forget all about the sad time you just had.

i might add here: music is playing in the background, and he’s singing along, making you do it with him. and if the coreography of ‘WAP’ is what it takes to make you smile, he’ll deliver it in front of the sink, rapping along to cardi b.

carl. aah, he’s so bad at this stuff, it kinda hurts! but let me tell you the first thing he would do: call your best friend. let’s say her name is ‘chelsea’. so he calls chelsea for advice on what to do, and she gives him a list. carl wouldn’t just push you to talk to someone else, and definitely would try to stay quiet while you talk.

he listens. TO YOU. he doesn’t care for other people. he knows he can’t give advice, so his way of cheering you up is to show you a place he loves going, to get some silence and thinking done. he wants you to feel reassured in the process. you might ride bikes to get there. “pumping those endorfins, right?!” he would say, handing you a helmet.

after getting there (which i imagine to be a low hill with the view of london) he’ll ask you to sit next to him, just to watch the city work down there. “do you wanna listen to something? maybe some classical, to calm you down?” here’s where he does a bit and puts something ridiculously unexpected and upbeat.

gary. nothing makes this man’s heart break more than seeing you sad. gary is not very talented in the kitchen, but he’ll still try to make you something to eat. “every time i got sad, it was food that would comfort me, and my nan would always make a killing sandwich.” so he would make an attempt with her recipe.

also, he’ll drive anywhere to pick up flowers or candy, or both. he has good intentions, but he knows if he talks to you about it, he might make it worse, so giving little presents it’s his way to try and comfort you.

a snuggle in the couch or in the bed is also part of his routine to cheer you up, while he runs his hands on your upper arms and hair, trying to distract you with ridiculous stories from when he and dicky used to go to pubs. expect several embarrassing anecdotes about dicky’s failures and one or two of himself being the hero. “sure, gare, sure.” “what?! i’m serious! i’m telling you, that’s exactly how it happened!!”

henrik. henrik’s way to make you feel better is to sit you on the couch and listen. he’s a great listener and will give you his full attention.

also, a foot rub. and drawing a bath. to henrik, those little gestures might not fix it, but he’ll do anything to relax you.

kassam. he’s surprisingly thoughtful about the person he loves. he’s in no way the touchy-feely type, but he would still go a long way to make you feel better. music is always the way to go, and trying to get you involved in it just as much. perhaps he’ll hand you a ‘drumstick’ (probably a metal straw) and drum on the counter, in hopes to lure a smile. he might do ridiculous things and gestures, faces and lyrics to go with it, just to get a laugh.

lottie. what better way lottie knows to cheer her girlfriend up than sitting her down in fron if the mirror, telling her how much of an incredible girl she is, and wipe her tears with a tissue? i’ll answer it for you. nothing!

to add to lottie’s ways, an aloe-vera wipe to help with your puffy eyes, and then, makeup. it’s nothing like “ooh, let’s make you look fierce!” and snap her fingers. no. something quiet that she can do while she listens to you. she has a light hand and would love to do your makeup while you talk to her.

“you can cry, babe. that’s what makeup wipes are for.” she just wants to spend some time with you and try her best.

lucas. lucas can be tough, but there’s nothing in the world that will soften him more than seeing you upset. he’s very protective, and after threatening the person or place that made you crumble, he’ll send you to the shower.

his plan involves getting you out of the house, for a nice dinner and movie date. the whole shebang, including this: when you’re ready, he’s nowhere to be found in the apartment, but the doorbell rings and it’s him, waiting to take you out to a nice place.

he’ll encourage you to talk about it during dinner, and after, the movie. when you get home, a shoulder rub to make you relax.

marisol. marisol is really bad at comforting people. she can be blunt and a little over the edge about psychological contributions on how you’re feeling. the way she knows how is to make something for you to eat. she wants you to open up, and she’ll promise to just listen lol

definitely, after you’re finished eating, she’ll take you to the couch, lie your head on her lap and caress your hair. if you want, she doesn’t mind displaying her amazing voice by reading to you. either that, or listening to some music and having some wine. she won’t go to bed until she makes sure you’re ok.

noah. noah is the best at comforting people. he always knows what to say and how to make someone feel better. he has that calming voice and tender touch that makes everything else disappear. he’s a great listener, and will have you in the kitchen, talking about what happened while making dinner for you. yes, your favorite, or a close second.

His favorite discipline is pokes sewing needles into his darling's flesh, making her scream out in pain and confusion. Oh, how her cries of pain are sweeter than any dessert! Speaking of sweets, if you dare misbehave than Ramuda is going to take away your "eating privileges" only if you beg will he let you have a tiny scrap to eat. Usually in the form of the vilest tasting candies in all of Japan.

Writing draft after draft about the "perfect" love story between you two. How he's the intelligent scholar that recuses the poor maiden from her mundane, dreadful life, whisking her away into a world of fantasies and knowledge. But soon, very, very soon, poor Gentaro will get bored with these tales and wish to experience the real thing. It's then that he truly becomes the protagonist of his stories. "saving" you in the dead of night, open the door of both your heart and mind to his great reality. "I love you (Y/N)~"

Life with Gentaro is extremely complex. You never know what true and what's a lie. Your self proclaimed "lover" is a pathological liar, with an icy heart! Failing to distinguish between his lies and reality often leads to both punishments and parts of your sanity chipping away. Of course, Gentaro would never hurt you, no, no he loves you too much. If you wake up to a broken leg to finger pulled out of their socket it must have been someone else. He twisted the fables in such a dreamy manner that you are just about to believe him...that is until he says he infamous catchphrase "that's just a lie" and continues to degrade you for not being able to distinguish such a clean distortion.

Over time you begin to cage yourself in a glass cage made up of Phantom's lies. Using those that benefit you and make you truly believe that he loves you to guard you against the harsh reality of all the cruel, inhumane things he has done to you.

He orders the 'Unlimited Pancake' meal for himself (with unlimited syrup and butter)

The conversation is never lacking

He's an incredible listener

Baby is so whipped, everyone can see it by the way he hangs onto every syllable that comes out of your mouth

Even though he doesn't talk much, he does ask questions

Sandwiches and charming little huts 

Walking the trails of Charm Villa is like stepping into a bright, colorful, and cute notepad. Rolling hills with vibrant green grass and colorful flowers scattered all over. On the tops of the hills are rustic and whimsical little cottages and huts, as well as shops, cafes, and a library. Take a picture and you’d think it was from a stationery set!

After sleeping in until around eleven we met up with Gutsy and Livvy at Coffee Studios for a tour of Charm Villa. Gutsy’s a college friend of Daisy Jane who just moved to the village a few months ago. Livvy’s her niece - first cousin once removed - and she and Jack - her dad/Gutsy’s cousin - own Coffee Studios. The cafe was founded by Gutsy and Jack’s grandma, then it was passed down to Jack’s mom, and after she retired her son and granddaughter now run the place.

The cafe’s best known for their sandwiches and every few months they set up a contest for a new sandwich to add to the menu. Livvy was the one who started that tradition and it got popular so it stuck. Guess what today happened to be? While Lolly, Pancetti, Biskit, and Lyman prepped for the contest, the rest of us hung around the village before meeting back around 3 for the contest.

I’ve only met Gutsy a handful of times over the years and she always leaves an impression. The name Gutsy - short for Augusta - fits her to a T. She said that she never thought her impulsiveness and wild imagination would make her a good detective and yet there she was solving crimes and saving the day. Gutsy really does remind me a lot about Jamie, except a lot more extroverted and bold. Honestly, I’m surprised that they haven’t crossed paths yet.

So far Gutsy’s enjoying the peaceful village life. It’s a huge change of pace compared to her old life. Gutsy grew up in a boarding house that also ran a stable so her life revolved around horses since forever. Her father died when she was seventeen, opening up a can of worms that led to her getting tangled up with an embezzling scheme that he was involved in and indirectly caused his death. After exposing the crime, Gutsy joined a task force dedicated to investigating crimes relating to shady underground practices involving horses like racing and such. 

Daisy Jane and Gutsy met in college when they became roommates. At the time Gutsy was considering studying to be a veterinarian but ended up dropping out a year later because the task force was starting to take over her life. In retrospect, the whole being a vet thing wasn’t meant to be for her.

Being a detective was an unexpected turn for Gutsy, one that no one saw coming - and yet, at the time, it made sense. For a while, she felt that she found her calling, especially after being betrayed by what her dad and his friends had done. Maybe, in a way, she was trying to absolve him of his misdeeds. Solving mysteries and working with horses, what else can she ask for?

But then around last year things went sour. Investigating crimes has its dangers, which Gutsy knows all too well. She can handle being a target, but when loved ones are in the line of fire, that’s where she draws the line. The birth of her daughter Lulu led to Gutsy reevaluating her life choices. Eventually she decided that it was time to move on and give Lulu a stable childhood.

That’s why she decided to settle in Charm Villa. Other than her cousins and a small handful of relatives, Gutsy doesn’t have much family. With Lulu to take care of, a journey of self discovery was out of the question so she opted to stick close to family for practical reasons. With Livvy in college and only coming home every other weekend and Jack having experience as a young single parent as well as needing help with the cafe, Gutsy knew she and Lulu would be in good hands. 

While she finds herself much happier and less stressed in Charm Villa, Gutsy does miss being around horses. As far as she knows, the nearest stable is about two hours away so she hasn’t had a chance to visit yet. Maybe when Lulu’s a little older, she says. For now, Gutsy and horses are taking a long break. 

The way she describes it is like a close relationship that has gone a bit too codependent. All her life she grew up surrounded by horses so she related to them more than people. Her views on the family she grew up with, especially her dad, have been clouded in recent years. When she put together the pieces, she didn’t want to believe it, but at the same time, it all made sense. While being a detective gave her a sense of purpose, it also showed Gutsy how deceiving people can be. She always - and still - find horses more trusting than people, so in a way she relied on them as a crutch. Do it for the horses - that was her mantra whenever she tackled a case that would push her limits. Then that led to her letting the task force take over her life to the point that she had nothing outside of that. 

Eventually it got to the point where all she cared about was getting the truth out. Right and wrong, black and white, collateral damage was unfortunate but it didn’t matter as long as what’s done is done. As a result, Gutsy ended up burning a lot of bridges, which in turn made her question if she did more harm than good.

Lulu was her wake up call, the one who turned Gutsy’s life upside down and forced her to reevaluate her future. Being a parent wasn’t in the cards for her but in the end she made her choice. While the idea of raising a kid is still terrifying for her, so far it seems to be the best thing to happen to her. After spending most of her life jumping headfirst into danger and chasing thrills, Gusty realized the weight of her actions and how one can’t always jump to conclusions or make poor judgements just to get ahead of everyone else.

Maybe it’s another attempt to right her dad’s wrongs - that’s still something she struggles with - but Charm Villa, the cafe, Lulu, her cousins, it’s been doing her a lot of good. There’s still a lot that Gutsy’s uncertain about, but getting herself out of a bad place is a good first step. After everything she’s been through, I hope she finds that peace of mind she deserves. From the looks of it, I think she’s finding her way.

Around 1:30 we headed back to the cafe to help set up for the sandwich contest. When we were done, we had time to kill so Jack and Livvy gave us a tour of the kitchen. Then we made lattes and bread, which was a lot of fun. By the time we were able to master latte art, it was time for the contest to begin!

Candy Fruit Sando by Lolly A super sweet take on the cute Japanese fruit sandwiches! To kick things up a notch, the fruits are coated with a sugary syrup for an extra crunch! Fresh ripe fruit candied to perfection, freshly whipped cream that feels like eating a cloud and a soft and pillowy brioche to tie it all together - it’s the perfect addition to any bento box! Rod - Candied fruit?! Genius! 9/10 Snooty - I just wanna take pictures of it and make my friends jealous over how pretty it looks! 10/10 Sylvana - Strawberries and cream are a winning combo! 8/10 Audie - Aesthetic and yummy - that’s a win for me! 9/10

Spa Day Sandwich by Pancetti In need of shaking up your skin care routine? No need to swap out your face mask or moisturizer when you can have a sandwich instead! All the freshest veggies guaranteed to give you a healthy glow like cucumbers and seaweed seasoned with a zesty citrus glaze on a slice of lightly toasted pumpernickel. Snooty - My skin’s already feeling great! 7/10 Sylvana - This kinda reminds me of a salad, but in sandwich form! 6/10 Audie - This was definitely inspired by a spa! 6/10 Rod - Skip the moisturizer, go for the sandwich! 7/10

The Ultimate Dessert Sandwich! by Biskit What happens when you mash a pie, cake, and pudding into one? Well, we’re about to find out with this sandwich! The bread’s kinda like a pie crust/brioche hybrid and the sauce is a rich caramel custard. In between are thin slices of red velvet cake, blueberry-ginger pie filling, and slices of yellow cake. Sylvana - If this doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, I don’t know what will! 8/10 Audie - Talk about indulgent! 6/10 Rod - Perfect for a cheat day after an intense workout - but only in moderation! 7/10 Snooty - Are you sure this is a sandwich? 5/10

But like we stayed friends for a long time after so that was good.

Have you ever wanted to taste some of the cooked food you cooked in Breath of the Wild? The Legend’s Cookbook is the gateway to those fantasies. The Legend’s Cookbook is a Legend of Zelda inspired cookbook featuring recreations of the amazing dishes from games we enjoy so much.

We sat down with three of the team members behind The Legend’s Cookbook, and they shared their thoughts about the cookbook and what readers (and eaters!) can look forward to.

Zelda Universe: What made you decide to create a Legend of Zelda inspired cookbook?

Peter Abreu, Lead Chef: There were a lot of factors that went into us wanting to do this. People are spending more money eating out than cooking at home, and we can start to change that trend. We figure if we make cooking something fun, uncomplicated and interesting, we can really change people’s lives.

We love the Zelda series, we’re huge fans. We are in love with the stories, characters and art style. Do you know what is at the very core of that series? Being a hero and saving the world. All of us on the team want to do something like that. The absolute goal here is that one of the recipes in this book becomes a staple in someone’s diet, that it changes the way they go about their dietary lifestyle and their life improves from that change. If we manage to do that, then we’ve done it.

We want everyone to cook like a hero, what better place to draw inspiration from than a series that brought that concept so near and dear to our hearts?

Matt Mannheimer, Producer: It’s one of those things where you play something and you’re like “what if that was real?” That was some of our mindsets when wanting to make some of these inspired recipes from the games. From there we poured our heart into it. With our passion for gaming and the [Zelda] series in general, it made us do our research and figure out what will be the perfect fit for these recipes.

ZU: What types of recipes and foods from the Zelda series are you taking inspiration from?

Peter: The recipes in this cookbook are original, real world recipes inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We have baked goods, breakfast foods, dinner items, healthy snacks, sweet desserts and so much more! We’re starting with 50 recipes and we want to add even more as stretch goals. For those stretch goals, we are going to add things like cocktails, more creative dishes, and even recipes inspired by the other games in the Zelda series.

Matt: This whole cookbook is from the perspective of the hero. The hero recollecting his time from his adventure, writing down these recipes, fighting monsters, going through dungeons. You know the whole drill! That’s what makes it special; it’s a cookbook that has a story behind it. Not just in the gaming world, but also in real life. If you have enjoyed Mother’s Cookbook or Batter’s Almanac, you’re probably going to enjoy this one.

ZU: Will this cookbook be enjoyed by those who may not know the Zelda franchise?

Peter: Absolutely, we like to keep cooking simple and accessible. This is not going to be a cookbook only for Zelda fans. This cookbook is not going to bash people over the head with references and in-jokes but there will be several subtle allusions and (literal) Easter eggs. We want this to be a guide for everyone, newcomers and veterans to the kitchen and the Zelda series.

The ultimate compliment is for someone to fall in love with the recipes, art, and photos in our cookbook, first, and then realize it draws a lot of inspiration from their favorite series, second.

Matt: You don’t have to know everything about the [Zelda] series to get into this book. I feel its for everyone. I definitely don’t know everything about the [Zelda] series, but whenever I look at these recipes, and the pictures, I’m drawn into it. There are recipes that range from easy to difficult, but they’re so much fun to make. They’re fun to make and are all delicious.

Patrick Deasy, Photographer: I’m probably the biggest normie of the bunch, I’m not much of a gamer. I’ve been able to try out these recipes and I can tell you from an outsiders perspective that this is definitely a cookbook first and a piece of nerd memorabilia later.

ZU: If you had to recommend a recipe to somebody who may be new to cooking, what would it be?

Peter: The rock-hard candy. Our rock candy recipe is simple and delicious. You can do it at home, it’s super easy and very enjoyable. This is for all those with a sweet tooth. Here, I’ll share it with you:

Rock Hard Candy

Ingredients:

2 Cups of White Sugar

1 Cup of Water

3/4 Cup of Light Corn Syrup

1/4 Cup of Pomegranate Juice

Powdered Sugar for Dusting

Directions:

In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and corn syrup.

Heat up the pan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the white sugar is dissolved completely with the water and corn syrup. It is important to stir gently after sugar has dissolved to prevent burning, Use a candy thermometer to watch the temperature of the mixture and let it hit to the hard crack stage of 300F (149C).

Once there, remove from it from heat and add in the pomegranate juice, slowly. Mix it in.

Then, pour the hot candy into a 9”x9” baking pan covered in parchment paper that’s been dusted with powdered sugar, so the candy doesn’t stick. Leave it out in the open air uncovered and let the candy harden and cool completely.

Then the fun part, break into chunks with a hammer and then enjoy.

Matt: The Legends Cookbook is here to give you a culinary adventure: just go for it. If there’s a recipe you really wanna make, just do it. Even if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it the first time, just keep trying. With these recipes, we just want you to become a better chef.

ZU: Which recipe from this cookbook are you most excited about?

In The Legend’s Cookbook, the Dubious Food tastes really good; a lot more than you would expect. It’s even pixilated, like in Breath of the Wild!

Peter: The recipe I am most excited for is the one inspired by Dubious Food. It was the very first item I wanted to try and make in the kitchen. It was something just so disgusting yet edible, it was a fun idea and I wanted to make it. It was hard but I really enjoyed all different ways to make the food turn purple and look gross yet taste amazing. The final product just came out so great and it tasted delicious.

I pulled heavily from learning how to cook coq au vin from Anthony Bourdain and his show Parts Unknown. He was a was a huge inspiration for me as a chef. I really resonated with him because, like him, I spent a lot of my traveling the world, learning different cultures and food. I wanted to bring that same spirit of travel and exploration, a concept also very core to the Zelda series, to this cookbook as well as honor him with one of my favorite dishes he made. Hours upon hours in the kitchen later, I’ve created a questionable but inviting twist on coq au vin that you will all enjoy.

Matt: The meaty rice balls. I couldn’t stop eating them! They were so good! I don’t know how Peter does it, but that meat was the most delicious thing I ever tasted. It’s sweet, it’s GOOD.

Patrick: This is pretty basic, but I was pretty amazed when I got to see Peter make the fried rice for a couple of the dishes. I’ve never been able to do it right, so knowing that it’s in the cookbook is pretty exciting for me. Also the Rock Hard Food is pretty rad. It’s like a hard candy that’s flavored with pomegranate juice and it’s great. Meaty Rice balls are fantastic. It’s spicy and sweet and wonderful. I almost forgot about the Dubious Food, that one is awesome. That one is definitely my favorite.

ZU: How will this cookbook stand out from other video game inspired cookbooks?

Peter: Our cookbook stands out from other cookbooks because it has a unique style and page layout. Have you opened a modern cookbook recently? Go to your local Target and find your way to the book section and look for their book section. Find a cookbook on the shelf and pick it up, look at it. You see beautiful food and a recipe. That’s usually it.

Our cookbook stands out because from the very inception, we are designing it like a field guide. In the margins are little watercolor drawings of stunning vistas, charcoal studies of various herbs and plants, little notes tucked in here or there. Our cookbook is rough around the edges and that’s the point, we want it to feel like you’ve found something personal and real when you pick it up. We want you to bust out your own pen and inks and add to it, there’s space! This may be our cookbook but we want you to make it your cookbook.

Matt: This project consists of a group of best friends; we’re all working on this together; we’re on the same wavelength. But were also big fans of the [Zelda] series and gaming in general. Were putting time into each and every recipe. I know Peter has done countless hours of research on every single recipe.

Everyone on our team is professional; we have several animation students. We have someone who worked on the Archer (the TV show), we have someone who worked from SEGA, that’s me! This team has come from different sides of the gaming, animation and art community. I feel like our relationships show from this cookbook.

Patrick: The thing that really separates this cookbook, I know I’ve been saying this a lot, but most video game cookbook’s I’ve seen have been very novelty, and most of them are just decoration guides for baked goods. This is not just a novelty decoration guide, we are not internet celebrities, we are a bunch of people who just really care about cooking.

ZU: A Kickstarter for this cookbook is coming up (May 2019); why should people support and back this project?

Peter: We hope, we really do hope, that people support our project. This is going to be something you’ll want to show other people and it is going to inspire you to cook for them as well. If you like cooking, if you like games or you want to just have a real piece of art to hang out on your bookshelf, this is for you.

Matt: The Kickstarter were hoping to have that up in May. We’re working really hard on this, we’re trying to make recipes that everyone can enjoy; a culinary adventure. This is one of my favorite projects I got to work on my entire life. The food is SO good. I’m serious about those meaty rice balls! I feel like with the team, partnering with TheYetee and the recipes, this will make for an amazing product.

We’re also working with The Yetee on this project! They will help with distribution, fulfillment, back rewards. I think partnering with TheYetee was amazing, and you’re gonna see a lot of stuff in the future that we’re excited to show off.

Patrick: If you wanted to know what the foods tasted like in Breath of the Wild, this is pretty much the closest you’re gonna get.

ZU: Anything else you want to share about the Zelda cookbook project?

Peter: We have so much more to tell but we want to save a few secrets. I’ll tell you what is no secret, we’ve partnered with The Yetee to help fulfill backer rewards and also produce a few of them. They are an amazing company and we are so happy to work with them. They’re gonna be a big help.
