Musical Touken Ranbu: Tsuwamonodomo ga Yume no Ato english sub
A passion project if there's ever been one, it's been a longstanding want of mine to finally do this! Needless to say, Tsuwamono and everything it meant is still my favourite plot from Toumyu! I love its character-driven and intricate writing, its heartrending acting choices, as well as the way it invites one to think about what characters think and why, and why they do or don't (dare to) do the things they do.
However, another important reason that I'm letting myself indulge in this, is that recent Toumyu has taken a turn away from this plot, changing the way how Mikazuki is framed, tying different characters to themes that were tied to Kogitsunemaru, and put those characters into roles that would originally have been most natural for Kogitsunemaru to follow.
In that light, then, I hope that these subtitles will allow you to see, even if it's just the smallest sliver, what I loved in Toumyu's take of Kogi and Mika up to and including Kotobuki. To see that it was beautiful. Because I think it was. 💙💛🌙🦊
Keep in mind that the files in the folder below are only the subtitle files, timed and tled to the blu-ray and DMM senshuuraku distribution. The folder also includes a pdf with translation notes, some background information where I felt it would add, and just a little bit of eager gushing about the references made.
You can find the folder with all the aforementioned files here!
Please enjoy, even if it's just with me in your thoughts.
#touken ranbu#tsuwamonodomo ga yume no ato#toumyu#Water's translations#tsuwamono#Kogitsunemaru#Mikazuki Munechika#we're joining with sute's timeline in which Kogi (may as well have) never existed hahahaha (pain)#but let's put that aside and enjoy Tsuwamono for the beauty it is#I love tsuwamono and translating it has only made me love it more#the references to Kokaji in the starting song were much more intricate than I expected#and I believe the way Basho's haikus are incorporated is smart!#the many things Tsuwamono slyly implies about its worldbuilding are so so so so nice#and also the question of what it means to exist and to be remembered!#that things are never black and white and that even the people you fear may be hurt or will not understand may be different from how you se#and that (I think this is very nice about tsuwa) people make mistakes and make *choices* and that that's what makes them human#I very gently gesture at Mikazuki#I love how he's characterised and how Kuroba conveys that characterisation#He envies shadows and betrays his own advice and cannot lay the finishing blow#he forces smiles. His kindness sways his heart again and again to stab himself with it. He fights a futile battle. He tries anyway.#He lies- He fears- He doesn't speak-- in understandable fear of the devastation he may cause if his words reached the ears of those he love#He would rather risk breaking.#Mikazuki is such a complex and deafeningly HUMAN character and I love that painfully kind and undeniably human portrayal of him so much#and though a certain contrast with Mikazuki is a vital part of the way Kogitsunemaru enters the paintwork here it is ultimately the fact#that he was never black and white- that he ever sees the bigger picture ironically just as Mika said- that allows him to understand#even if with his own personal feelings and his discipline he can't follow the same road#this in deep contrast to Hizamaru- who would not even have hesitated or felt reluctant or even had to battle his feelings had he found out#and I think the relief of having someone dear to confide in- that's emphasized twice with Iwa in the myu- in the form of Kogi#is something that (up to TKO) would and should have meant the world to Mikazuki#that his unwillingness to follow the same path could much too naturally still have meant he could have supported Mikazuki in other ways

Magia Rapport day 5
Feb 05, 2020: Pair Yachiyo with a strong emotion. What is she feeling and why is she feeling this way?
I saw this prompt and started writing and it sort of turned into an entire fic. It delves a bit into Yachiyo’s grief and has a hint of Yachiyo x Kanae (a ship you’d think had sunk for obvious reasons, but since it’s canon that Kanae gets an afterlife, who knows?)
Today is the anniversary of Kanae’s death.
Yachiyo doesn’t say anything, but the other girls notice when Yachiyo doesn’t get up to help make breakfast in the morning like usual. When Iroha takes a peek in her room and sees her looking out her bedroom window with a blank, vacant stare and tears in her eyes, she knows.
After a quick word with Sana and Tsuruno, the three of them cook breakfast together. It’s rice with raw egg and miso soup, an occasional favorite of Yachiyo’s. Felicia starts to whine about the lack of meat, but stern looks from Iroha and Tsuruno get across the message that something is up, and she sets the table with minimal grumbling. As the other girls are setting out the food, Iroha gently knocks on Yachiyo’s bedroom door.
“Yachiyo-san, breakfast is ready.”
Iroha hears the sound of blankets moving coming from the other side. Yachiyo’s voice is quiet and monotone. “I appreciate you taking care of it for me, Iroha. I’ll be out in a few minutes.”
The Mikazuki girls eat together in relative silence. Iroha and Tsuruno prepare to leave for school as Sana clears the table. Felicia surprisingly reads the room and gets herself ready unprompted.
“Do you have any classes today?” Iroha asks Yachiyo as she puts her shoes on to walk out the door.
“Not today. I was supposed to have a modeling gig, but I’ve cancelled it.”
“All right. Get some rest, Yachiyo-san. Off we go.”
“Take care.”
After Iroha and the others leave, Yachiyo goes to the box of her friends possessions and takes out Kanae’s mug, turning it around in her hands. She thought that the closure she had gotten from opening this box after the memory museum would be enough to move on, but grief doesn’t work that way.
𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵. Yachiyo can get herself to believe it most of the time these days. But today, it feels like she’s just telling herself that. She can’t stop crying. “I’m sorry, Kanae. I’m so, so sorry.” She mutters to herself as she grips the mug tightly. Today is a bad day. Today is a very bad day.

“Yachiyo-san.”
Yachiyo opens her eyes. She had passed out on the couch in the living room. Iroha was gently shaking her awake.
“Yachiyo-san, dinners ready.”
Yachiyo sits up, rubbing her temples. Crying herself to sleep gave her a splitting headache. “Iroha, I’m sorry, I-”
“There’s nothing to apologize for.” Iroha takes Yachiyo by the hand and leads her to the dinner table. “Let’s get you something to eat.”
Tonight’s dinner is hotpot. Yachiyo eats slowly after some prodding. Felicia quietly picks out only the meat pieces, avoiding everything else. The silence is as deafening as it was that morning.
After the meal, Tsuruno clears the table and hands out the dessert, maple flavored ice cream served in coffee mugs.
“...That was Kanae’s favorite.” Yachiyo says as Tsuruno hands her a spoon.
“Yeah. You said something about it a while ago.” Tsuruno replies “Let’s have some together. In her memory.”

“We found this while we shopping for dinner and thought of you.” Iroha hands Yachiyo a CD from a Korean rock band. “You said Kanae used to like stuff like this. We were kind of worried that talking about it might upset you more, but Sana came up with the idea to spend time with things she enjoyed as a celebration of life.”
I saw for the first time
“I-I’ve brought flowers from the shop Konomi-san works at.” says Sana, gesturing to a bouquet of flowers that have been placed in the flower vase on the center of the table. “Let’s bring them to Kanae-san’s grave tomorrow, all four of us together.”
Yachiyo has a small spoonful of her ice cream. It tastes like autumn, which is when her and Kanae first met. She smiles for the first time that day. “Yes.” she says. “Let’s do that.”
what it was like to love someone.
Felicia gets up from her seat and walks over to Yachiyo, her stuffed cow in her hands. “I don’t know a lot about your friend, or what would make you feel better. But!” she places the cow in Yachiyo’s lap. “But whenever I’m sad, I sleep with this, and it makes me feel better. So if you want to borrow it-”
“Pfft.” Maybe it’s the absurdity of a grown adult being comforted by a stuffed animal. Maybe it’s a involuntary reaction deal with the pent up stress she’s been feeling all day. For whatever reason, Yachiyo starts giggling.
“Hey! Are you making fun of me?!” Felicia growls.
“No, not at all.” says Yachiyo as she picks up the stuffed cow and squeezes it. “Thank you, Felicia. Thank you ... everyone.”
Today is a bad day. But tomorrow will be a better day.

Yay! The ask box is open!! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this blog. I enjoy reading everything you write. TRIGGER! We’ve had scenarios where the s/o of some of the sword boys were pregnant. If its ok, I’d like to request a scenario where Hachisuka, Souza, (Adult) Yagen and Mikazuki respond to and care for their s/o who is having a miscarriage. What words of comfort would they offer them? What would their initial reaction be? Thank you!
I’m glad you enjoy! Ah I really hope the answers are alright, the care part I was particularly unsure of.
Hachisuka• “I’m sorry…”• Words are really not his strong point at this time. He doesn’t know what to say to you, he doesn’t know how he feels, he just knows how much he hates seeing you upset and wants to support you. He makes a good listener and is always around if you need it, offering company and small gestures.
Souza• “You’ll make it through this.”• Again, he does not know what to say, in particular he feels anything he says will actively make you feel worse. He’s terrified honestly but he stays by your side, is very gentle and offers you support. He listens to you and does not get troubled when you cry or try to push him away. He’ll be there for you.
Yagen• “Take your time.”• Patience is key with him, he’ll be patient when you cry, when you don’t want to talk and when you can’t stop grieving. He shoots down any blame you put on yourself and does his best to help you get out your emotions but also to keep going. He’s not confident but he’s determined to pour his energy into getting you through this at least.
Mikazuki• “It’s not your fault.”• He doesn’t speak a lot, he is mostly listening to you. He won’t push you to speak, but is always there and knows what to say when you do need to hear something. He’ll wipe away your tears and treat you gently, taking you out and distracting you when you feel it’s too much. He feels a strong grief himself, but is much more caught up in his thoughts about you.
