Reasons why I'm glad I bought the Nintendo Switch re-release of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door:
It allows me to access special dialogue about Vivian being trans which wasn't available in the original English translation.
If I wanted to play the original, I'd have to go to my parents' house to pick up my sister's old Gamecube, which would mean either going in boymode (ick) or going as myself and facing my mom's rage at seeing the real me.
The access code didn't print out on my receipt, which led to an extended conference between a number of different Target employees. Since I live in a fairly liberal area where retail people don't say "sir" or "ma'am" much, this was my first time to see if strangers would gender me correctly since they were talking about me in third person. And they did!
So, in summary, there are no non-transgendered reasons for me to own the Nintendo Switch re-release of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

He hadn’t meant to say it.
The house was warm, the low murmur of relatives catching up while silverware clinked together mixed with Nat King Cole crooning out of the stereo. Mashed potatoes heaped by spoonfuls onto plates, kids’ new toys scattered in a rush once the ham was carved, and soon wine started to be poured for those of age.
Vivian Harrington simply smiled as you told her none for you and moved on, but the same couldn’t be said for others at the table.
“Not drinking, huh? Are you pregnant?”
If his scotch drunk uncle jumped over the line of appropriate, Steve ignored it all together, replying hopefully and without thought.
“No…not yet!”
He hadn’t meant to say it.
Your eyes widened, jaw tensed as you huffed out a breath through your nose. Steve’s cheeks flushed, and the table erupted into chaos, terribly intimate questions directed towards you.
“Oh! Are you trying?! How exciting!”
“When you are, make sure Stephen here does everything. It’s the least he can do.”
“How long have you been trying? Don’t give up, Ben and I took two years, but look at us now…”
“How many do you want?”
“Are you still going to work?”
“Kids? So soon?”
“Who’s having a baby? Uncle Steve?!”
“Vivian?” You called, flagging Steve’s mom over.
You took the bottle of previously passed on wine and gave yourself a more than generous pour, and Steve whispered, “Baby, I thought that alcohol could affect your…”
The look you gave him had his mouth closing quickly, keeping his concern about ovulation and hormones to himself. You turned away from him, then answered every single question with grace and a grip on the glass that made Steve gulp around his own drink.
Eventually, the table settled into topics that gave you a small reprieve.
Steve leaned closer, lips almost to the apple of your cheek and you turned, so his kiss was cut off, mouth parted in surprise as he blinked at you. He spoke softly, fingers reaching for yours as he did, “I’m sorry, I didn’t-”
“Should we give you two some privacy?” A quip and waggled eyebrows from the other side of the table, and you plastered on a perfect smile and faked a laugh, poured yourself more wine and Steve’s shoulders deflated.
You still hadn’t spoken to him. Dinner passed, and then dessert, and then coats were being pushed on and kids wrangled into cars for the midnight service.
Steve managed to get you close to him in the very backseat of one of the vehicles. He kept his eyes on your profile as you stared straight ahead.
“Are you going to ignore me the entire night? I’m sorry,” he started, voice low.
Your gaze turned to him finally and your chest ached from how apologetic he looked. And honestly, you were over it as quickly as it happened, and the glasses of wine helped, and you were ready to say so. But then Steve’s fingers brushed your knee, up and down and back up your thigh. They nudged at the hem of your skirt, testing. His other fingers curled around your neck, words dipping even lower, soft and for only your ears.
“How else can I tell you I’m sorry, honey?”
Steve’s thumb swiped down your neck, soothing and far too close to your racing pulse. It’d been sort of easy for him lately, and the thrill of making him think you were mad, the chance to make him sweat a little, to work for it, had your underwear growing wet.
“We can talk about it later, when we get home,” you whispered, sternly.
Steve nodded earnestly, until your fingers curled into your skirt, until the red, green and gold fabric pulled higher and higher. Your eyes remained on his until he had to look down, to see your black tights were not tights, but stockings. A sliver of supple skin revealed between plaid skirt and where they ended high on your thigh. The black lace disappearing as quickly as it was shown to him as your skirt dropped again, fanning nicely over your thighs.
His tongue swiped over his lip, adams apple bobbing. He cleared his throat, voice a warning, “Baby-”
The car pulled to a stop, and you were out on the pavement with his family, heading into the church before he’d really even caught his breath.
He watched you hang your coat, and help his nieces and nephews with theirs. His eyes traveled from the black heels up the black stockings that he now knew ended under your pretty Christmas skirt, curved around your thighs delicately and sinfully. He swallowed at the sight of red velvet over your breasts, at the memory of what happened last time you were here.
It was easy to slip away as churchgoers caught up over coffee and doughnuts before the service, as kids became preoccupied in the Sunday school rooms with toys. You made your way down a dark hallway under the guise of the bathroom, and had to bite down on your smile as an arm slunk around your waist and pulled you into a room silently and quickly.
Only lit by the soft light of the navy sky and moon outside, the room was obviously rarely used, a place for mismatched and forgotten things. Steve spun to face you, his fingers behind him clicking the lock closed with a barely audible, but still noticeable click.
“Yes?” You prompted, folding your arms over your chests and hiding your delight at the way the movement made his eyes flit down to your breasts.
Steve crossed the room in quick strides, hands finding your hips and tugging you to him gently as he spoke with sincerity.
“Angel,” his nose traced down the bridge of yours, before he kissed the tip of it, “I’m sorry.” He kissed your cheek, your jaw, the corner of your lips before he pulled away enough to look into your eyes again, so you could see how truly sorry he was.
“I really didn’t mean to say it, it slipped out. I’m just so excited, and I didn’t even think…”
“I know,” you offered quietly, as your fingers slipped into his hair, curling stray and unruly pieces behind his ears. Your eyes remained focused on your adjustments, sure that if you looked at his eyes for longer than two seconds, you’d forget you were “mad” and fuck him in a church again. You’d break and he’d have barely worked for it.
Steve knew this, you think.
Because your eyes caught the subtle twitch of his lips, the fake deep sigh, the way his head leaned forward until he was at your ear. Hot breath hitting skin in a way that had goosebumps exploding over your entire body, his voice sultry and low as he asked, “Can I make it up to you?”
“Steve…” your half-hearted start to a protest you didn’t want to give lost as he dipped lower, pressing silk lips to your neck.
His palms brushed over the curve of your breasts, they skated down your sides, lower and lower to your hips. As your head fell back, they circled to your ass, grabbing generous handfuls and squeezing as his breath grew sharper against your collarbone. Parted lips dragging across it, the tentative trail of his tongue warm and testing.
“We…we’re in a church,” you gulped around the words, his kisses traveling up the column of your throat now as he nudged your feet backwards.
“Didn’t stop us the last time.” Steve’s voice was shot, a goner the minute you showed him the stockings.
Men were too easy.
Your legs hit a couch arm, and Steve’s fingers grabbed for your jaw gently, thumb pulling at your chin so you had to look at him. Both of your chests moved rapidly, anticipating, as you fell deeper and deeper into the moss and honey in his iris’ - lost in the forest, stuck in the sticky trap.
His other hand roamed to the hem of your skirt, pads of his fingers buzzing over the skin above the stockings as he pulled the fabric higher. His head cocked in a way that said he knew what he was doing, the ghost of a smile on his lips telling you he knew that you weren’t mad, not really, but he’d play your game anyways.
“Let me make you feel good, honey,” his lips brushed over yours as he spoke. The chatter of people filling the chapel right outside grew louder, but his voice remained even and soft, “It’s the least I can do, don't you think?”
Maybe you were easy too.
Because you were nodding, and he was easing you down onto the couch. Steve knelt before you, watching you carefully, hungry, as he pulled your heels from your feet, letting them fall to the ground.
Your palms pressed to the cushion behind you as he lifted a leg, your words swallowed and caught somewhere in your chest with your breath as he kissed your ankle bone through the thin material. Steve kept his eyes on you, warm and greedy as he kissed up your calf, at your knee until he was at the top of the thigh high. He gently laid your leg back down, and then pulled at your waist until you were at the edge of the seat.
“You gonna be quiet for me?”
The nod of your head was pitiful, putty in his hands and from his words as he flipped your skirt up. Steve’s lips pressed kisses to the inside of your thighs, sweet and in a slow way that had heat rising to your cheeks. Your body hot, spine turning to liquid as he nudged his nose into the damp black silk covering you, as his fingers curled into the waistband.
Steve pulled them from you, sighing at the way they stuck to your lips. He slipped them down your legs, never letting his eyes leave the space between your thighs. He was taking his time, drinking you in with his eyes in a dirty gaze that had your entire body tightening, making you want him more than you ever had, erasing any sort of rationality or thoughts from your brain other than him and this.
His fingers tugged at your hips, squeezing possessively until a whine bubbled out of you, his name a desperate whisper, barely audible over the choir singing.
He hummed when you spread your legs wider for him, pressing against the couch as he leaned in. His hands roamed down and back up your thighs, until they were spreading you.
His thumbs held you apart, mouth a ghost over your cunt. Hot breath exhaled against slick lips that had your toes curling and your lungs somehow forgetting how to take in air. He had you on the ledge, and he hadn’t even started.
Steve pushed closer, the tip of his nose a slow drag through your slit, his lips skimming over your folds behind it, tasting, testing.
His tongue finally made contact with you, a long, slow lick from your entrance to just below your clit, making you wait, making your fingers dig into the cushion and your eyes look towards the heavens.
Steve did it again, painfully slow, the hot and wet glide of his tongue along you sinful. Over and over, flat, broad strokes of it, tasting every bit of you except for your clit, getting you higher and higher, closer to bliss without giving it to you.
You were throbbing, an insistent and buzzing pulse under your skin demanding to be felt, demanding to break. It felt like your ears were crackling with static like the speakers the pastor was now giving his sermon in.
Steve lifted on your hips that wiggled, caressing over the top of your ass. He stopped his movement with his tongue, panting over your cunt, letting his mouth hover against your glistening lips.
Your chest grew heavier with each rise and fall of labored breathing as you watched Steve’s tongue flick out, tracing the curves of you and letting his nose drag and nudge behind it. Teasing and taunting, pulling every last drop of want out, your body taut and ready to snap.
Then he looked up at you.
His cheeks flushed pink, and pupils blown wide, lit up in glittering moonlight streaming in through old and warped glass, he looked like something holy and angelic between your thighs. As if he were worshiping you, praying on his knees at your feet.
The grip he had on your hips shifted, pushing down your thighs and spreading you wider, and his voice was raspy as he asked, “You forgive me?”
Your head nodded once, fingers reaching for his hair to pull him closer, desperate for his mouth to be back on you. Your own voice shot, a pitiful whine as you begged him, “Please, need your-ohmygod.”
Steve’s spit hit your clit, making your thighs go to snap close, but his palms held you open forcefully. He wasn’t an angel worshiping, he was unholy, he was sin, he was filthy as he kept eye contact with you and dipped his mouth over you again.
His lips molded around your pulsing nerves, tongue flicking out in a rhythm that had your entire body lit up, vibrating, fraying and sparking. His hands pushed at your thighs that resisted him, he moaned against you as you fell forward. Your fingers yanking in his hair as your hips moved against his face.
Steve’s exhale was sharp as he released, sinking lower and dragging his tongue over your slit again. He was faster now, keeping his tongue flat against you as he lapped at your cunt, nose nudging against your clit over and over again as you rocked against it.
“Fuck, Ste-,” your hand slapped over your mouth and your eyes widened, but Steve didn’t let up. You tugged on his hair, whimpering, and his hand rose, finger pulling at your pouting bottom lip until you were parting for him. You moaned around the black silk he shoved into your waiting mouth.
He doubled down then, tongue prodding at your entrance, fast and precise licks up to your clit he kept working at with his nose. Steve’s heavy lidded gaze up at you had you crying out around the fabric, your chest crumpling over his head as you grinded down against his nose, unraveling for him.
Tears pricked behind your eyes, skin hot as you came around nothing but his tongue, he hadn’t even slipped a finger into you. Steve held your waist now as you arched, letting your thighs finally close around his face as he licked over you, humming against your sensitive nerves as he greedily took in everything you gave him.
He pulled away eventually, nose and lips skimming down your thigh until he was at your stockings. He pressed his cheek to your knee and looked up at you. Your underwear pulled from your mouth and crumpled in your fingers, your eyelashes fluttered as you tried to keep your eyes open, chest rising and falling ragged. You looked at him under your straining eyelids, warmth and affection and something far too sweet for what you two just did behind your gaze.
The choir was singing again, Silent Night, and your fingers pressed to your lips, hiding a smile and a giggle.
He hadn’t meant to say it, but he was kind of glad he did.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #89: “Rabbot Redux” | February 8, 2010 - 12:00AM | S08E02
Happy Space Ghost day, everyone! 30 dang years with our great guy. Wow! Seems like as good a day as any to start this shit up again. To the small-yet-still-dwindling number of people who read my shit: Hi! Real life is having it’s way with me right now, so please know I’m instituting a hard-and-fast “will update when I feel like it” rule to this thing for the right-now. So, please don't expect this to be a nightly blog. It'll be more like a "nighty" blog, as in "nighty-night", because it will be angelically and perfectly asleep most of the time. Thank you.
It’s Rabbot Redux: a fairly unnecessary explanation for what happened directly after the events of the live-action episode. It turns out the Aqua Teens drove their moving van two doors down, to the other house next to Carl’s. Not a lot happens; Neil unpacks while Rick and Vivian fight over which room is theirs. Shake immediately claims the bathroom, not realizing it’s a bathroom. Meatwad gets a luxurious room with a salad bar and a harem.
Eventually Rabbot (from before) shows up with a housewarming gift. He then crushes the Aqua Teens’ house, forcing them to go back to the old house. Schooly D shows up and sings a new theme song (which is also used over the opening sequence). This one calls back a lot of stuff from Rabbot, like Carl working out of the home, and “dancing is forbidden”.
This one isn’t especially groundbreaking, and it’s a little puzzling that they felt the need to write themselves out of that "hole". Normally they’d just ignore stuff like that and relish the show's lack of continuity. Not only did they air an episode between the two episodes (a Christmas special), but they also put it on DVD with multiple episodes between this and the Live-Action episode; I’m guessing in some production order or something. It's striking how little these guys care, sometimes. It's weird to see them dutifully tie up a thread.
This one is fairly funny, though. There’s nothing egregiously bad in it. The biggest smile I did was the part when Shake started berating Frylock about sucking his stuff. Shake is a nasty guy who says rude stuff :)

FOX on Adult Swim bump (January 11, 2010)
Hey, here's something fun and--what luck! I am telling you about it: At this time, Adult Swim was airing episodes of Family Guy shortly after they premiered on Fox, and they had a significant viewership on both channels. In the episode "Big Man on Hippocampus", they aired a fake Adult Swim bumper (intended to mess with Fox watchers) as they went to commercial, making a joke about confusing their viewers into which network they were watching. When the episode aired on Adult Swim, they followed it up with a Fox-style promo instead of their normal bumper. Fun fact: I once spoke to somebody who was writing on an Adult Swim show and they entertained the idea of doing a fake Adult Swim bumper, and asked me if any other shows had done that. I told them "even Family Guy has" because I happened to catch this bit. Took the wind out of those sails.

oh wow she's straight-up married to the mindless self indulgence guy. woof

Hello Mister Swim! What if I called you Mister Swim all the time, like you were Mr. Moviefone? Would that be a treat?
Yeah, it would be a nice treat. Thank you for being so nice to me.

WELCOME!
Lauren's POV
*Taps microphone* Is this thing on?
*Looks around the room, after adjusting the angle on the camera*
Oh hello! I'm Lauren! Lauren Gibson, and this boyo... *Toémme nips at my jacket* ...is Toémme! Vivian just bought him for the stable she is starting up, and I am going to be her menteé! How cool is that?
*Smiles big, then holds onto Tóemme's halter, as he is about to move away* Ooooh no big boy, you will stay here! *Laughs out loud, as he tries to dig into the treats in my pocket* Silly boy.
Anyways I am the one who started this blog, sometimes normal blog, sometimes vlog. We will see what I land on in time, but today is very Vlog-y *shrugs and shakes my head*
Anyways, I am 28 years old, and has been riding all my life. Never had my own horse though, and I still don't have that. But with a Mentor like Vivian, I have no need for my own horse right now. I am very contend with working with and for Vivian, that's for sure!
Tóemme is 5 years old and a Caballo de Polo Argentino, which is basically a continental type of Polo horse, but he has a talent for jumping, so no Polo for you, Tóemme *rubs his nose* No, you will be a brilliant show jumper instead!
From what Vivian has told me, she wan't Echo International Jumpers to be a stable with Show Jumpers in it. She is dreaming of big Warmbloods of different kinds, specifically trained for the art of Jumping, and with time hopefully also being able to offer the best of her stallions up as studs.
Right now we are located at a facility that Vivian has leased for a longer period of time, which is honestly quite clever, because if this doesn't work out, then she won't have bought something she will have to sell later *laughs again, shaking my head* but knowing Vivian she will succeed with this for sure!
*Looks into the camera again, after removing some hay from Tóemme's forlock* Anyways, that will be all for today. Tomorrow the hard work of making a Show Jumper out of Tóemme. Or well, he can in fact jump, but making us a winning team? We will have some hard work to do for sure, peewh!
Lauren over n' out!

could you write something with a fat young lady and a married man?
usually not my kink, but we will see, how we can combine my dirty thoughts with yours
She was the daughter of a good work colleague and Max was strangely extremely attracted to her when he saw her that Sunday afternoon for the first time in years. They used to see each other a lot when she was a child. Max and his family had enjoyed being with Sean's family and they had gone on many outings together. But then Vivian hit puberty and Sean didn't make her come with him to the get-togethers between friends. Max's children were a little younger than Vivian, but they had also all graduated from high school. Max's wife would never have thought that Max would find the family friend's daughter attractive because she herself had always been very slim, whereas the young woman was fuller and curvier. Despite the extra kilos, the young woman was undoubtedly not unattractive - she had a round face with large, attentive eyes, a deep voice and a loud laugh, large, plump breasts and soft, well-proportioned shapes. But she was a very different body type to Max's wife, whom he had been with since they were both 17, and she was still hardly any heavier than she was then and still fitted into the jeans from their high school days, as she was also very athletic. So Max's wife never thought that Max might take a liking to his friend's daughter, who had now grown into a voluptuous and aesthetically pleasing woman.
Max read the blog while at work and her fantasy on him turned him on so much that he went to the bathroom to jerk off for the first time in his professional career. He jerked off to her and the pictures she posted of herself there. And at the thought of actually meeting her. It was strange to meet Vivian's father at work. He certainly didn't know anything about his daughter's internet activities. For a while, Max simply enjoyed the occasional pictures of Vivian and reading her latest fantasies on the blog, but at some point he started to reply to her and write to her, which made Max want Vivian and her body more and more. He craved the femininity that Vivian displayed. They wrote more and more frequently and Max found himself lying more and more to his wife until he caved in.
He was a man with style and he knew how bold it would be to bring Vivian into his marriage bed while his wife wasn't there. It would turn him on to have sex with his wife on the same sheets, but he couldn't do that to her. He also didn't want to get caught, so no public place was an option and Vivian was temporarily staying with her parents as she was going through a break-up with her boyfriend. So Max took the opportunity the next time he went on a business trip - not very far, he could have driven back in the evening to take a hotel but he wanted to spend time with Vivian. So he wrote her a private message and asked her to meet him at the hotel and she replied that she would be there. Max was very ashamed of his plan. He shouldn't cheat on his wife, with whom he was actually very happy. What was it about her that made him always dream about her and jerk off to her? He wanted to continue his marriage, but he wanted to push his cock deep into Vivian's luscious body. He called his wife on the way from his business meeting to the hotel. When she answered, he began to tearfully tell her that he almost had sex with another woman - he hadn't yet canceled the meeting with Vivian. He heard a man's voice in the background. “Who's with you?” he asked, irritated because she was silent and didn't answer his confession straight away.
“I'm so glad you told me about it,” his wife said quietly. “I want to cheat on you too.” They were silent for a moment. Then Max said: “Oh. Do you already have it or do you just want it?” She replied: “I haven't got it yet. But I've had the desire for some time. And it turns me on a little that you're going to another woman too. Let's do it tonight. Together. You fuck your fling and I'll have my affair do it for me.” Max thought about it for a moment. That was strange. She should be angry with him. “I'll think of you when I swallow his sperm,” she promised and then hung up. Max shrugged his shoulders, looked for a parking space and went up to the hotel. That's why his wife was his soulmate, she felt the need for another man at the same time as he did. He wrote her a message as soon as he was in the room. “Send me a picture of your lover.” Then he showered and got ready for Vivian. Vivian was wearing make-up and a dress that gently hugged her curves. Max was immediately horny and wanted to kiss her straight away, but she still seemed a little unsure. “Should we really be doing this?” she asked. ”I like older men but I've honestly never had one over 30 and you're married and a friend of my father's.” Max nodded, she was right, but the thought that his wife was doing the same thing spurred him on.
“You came here,” he said. “You can leave again if you think it's wrong.” She sighed. Then she took off her shoes. Max walked up to her and she looked at him, her eyes wide with lust. He kissed her. Putting an arm around her, he felt a roll of flab under his hand. Her bottom was voluminous and he couldn't help but grip it tightly. She let out a sigh. He liked the way he touched her. He didn't want to wait long and pushed her towards the bed. She lay down on it, he was now on top of her, kissing her passionately, touching her full, huge tits and her sensual belly, which was also adorned with a flabby roll. She was soft and warm and he was already moaning into her kiss, she felt so feminine under him. His cell phone vibrated. “Don't you want to see who it is?” Vivian asked, but Max didn't want to. Nevertheless, he reached for his cell phone. He had just received a message. “Just from my wife,” he said and continued kissing Vivian. She pushed him away a little. “Read the message,” she demanded. He sat up a little and clicked on the message. It was a video taken from his bedside table. Vivian also sat up and peeked over his shoulder.Max started the video and saw his wife move into the picture, a man followed her onto the bed. He was fat! Really flabby, but she moaned loudly and passionately as they rolled over so that he was on his back and sat on him. He was naked.
She was wearing a dress, but now took it off, looking directly into the camera. The man beneath her admired her and praised her for her body. She moaned as she rubbed herself over his cock. Max felt Vivian's kisses spread over his neck. He was horny. She undressed him as he continued to watch his wife ride another man like he was a horny cop and she was rodeo riding. Vivian took the cell phone from his hand, got into doggy position and placed the cell phone on a pillow in front of her so that Max could continue to watch the video. She stuck her huge bottom out at him and he was able to get into position. For a moment, he looked at the fat woman in front of him and her juicy pussy, which was already glistening with lust under her ass. He could still hear his wife and the strange man moaning. It felt very good to penetrate her. Warm, fleshy and wet. Her body was everywhere. He fucked her from behind, looking again and again at the video and again at the enormous ass in front of her. His cock had never felt so good while his wife was having fun with someone else in his marital bed and he was taking his friend's daughter doggy style. He could never have fucked his wife this hard, but the young woman screamed with lust and pleasure.

Cassian sighed as he opened his eyes.
Another year older, another year wiser.
Well.
Another year older, anyway.
He blinked as he looked at the alarm clock on the nightstand. 7:58. Two minutes before his alarm would have gone off.
He hated when that happened, when his mind woke him up just before his alarm went off. There was no time to go back to sleep, it was perfect sleeping time wasted.
It was bullshit.
With a yawn, Cassian swung his legs over the side of his bed and got up. He stumbled to his dresser and pulled on a pair of sweatpants, just in time for his alarm to go off.
“Fuck you,” he muttered, quickly turning it off before flinging open his bedroom door.
It smelled delicious.
He meandered down the stairs and into the kitchen, where Nesta was icing a giant cake.
Her eyes darted to his.
He blinked.
“Get out!” she ordered.
“What the hell are you-.”
“Out!” she ordered, yet again.
Nyx babbled something at the top of his lungs that closely resembled, YEAH!
He did as he was told, blearily blinking as he stumbled back into the living room. He dragged a hand down his face. “Can I at least have some coffee?”
“In a minute!” She called and he heard quick footsteps, followed by the back door opening and closing. It opened again and she said, breathlessly, “Okay. You can come in now.”
Tentatively, Cassian rounded the corner and he found Nesta placing a platter of cinnamon rolls on the counter in place of the—
“Where did the cake go?” He asked, raising an eyebrow as he poured himself a cup of coffee.
Nesta was lifting a cinnamon roll onto each of the plates in front of her, cutting the one for Nyx into tiny bites for him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He blinked again, half-wondering if he’d imagined the decorated monstrosity he’d seen on the counter, but he sniffed, smelling the air again.
It mostly smelled like the sweet and spicy scent of cinnamon, but—
No, that was definitely cake he smelled.
“Right…” he said, pulling forks out of the silverware drawer and setting one next to each plate. “You’re up early.”
“Had a lot to do before renovations start this morning. I’m meeting Helion and the contractor at the restaurant at nine.” She sipped her own coffee, not looking at him. Mixing truth and lies, it seemed, since he knew she was meeting the contractor this morning. As for a lot to do, he knew everything at the restaurant was already taken care of. She cleared her throat. “I wasn’t expecting you to be up so early either.”
Cutting into the gooey cinnamon roll, he said, “I gotta be at the bar in an hour. I’m talking with Kallias this morning before my shift starts.”
She set her coffee down and finally looked at him. “You have to work today?”
“Yeah,” he replied, popping the bite of pastry into his mouth. He resisted the urge to moan. “It’s Tuesday. I always work on Tuesdays.”
She hesitated, deciding whether she should speak or not. “But it’s your birthday.”
He couldn’t stop his smirk. He knew there had been a cake.
“And who told you that?” He asked, leaning over to wipe Nyx’s face off. The poor kid had icing all over his face, all the way up into his hair.
“That’s not important,” she said.
“Elain, then,” Cassian went on with a grin.
Nesta pretended like she hadn’t heard him and took a giant bite of her cinnamon roll.
“I’ll take Nyx with me to the bar,” Cassian said. “Viviane texted. She has the stomach flu.”
Nesta cringed. “That sucks. I...wait - you’re taking a baby to a bar?”
Cassian shrugged. “He’ll be fine. I only have to stay until two or so.”
“A baby,” she repeated, blinking. “To a bar.”
“You prefer to take him into a construction zone?” Cassian asked. “One that you’re in charge of? That sounds stressful.”
Nesta’s eyes narrowed. “I can ask Elain to watch-.”
“I’m taking him with me and he’ll be fine,” Cassian said, shaking his head. “I promise.”
Nesta narrowed her eyes. And he held up both hands. “I promise,” he repeated.
“Fine. But call me if you need to and I’ll come get him,” she sighed, shaking her head. “I’ll be in my office most of the day, so it’s not like he’ll be running around in a construction zone.”
“And I’ll take the carrier and physically wear him all day, so it’s not like he’ll be running around the actual bar.”
Nesta groaned. “Fine. Fine. But take the pack-n-play, his monitor and toys. He can entertain himself well enough.”
“Okay,” Cassian nodded, finishing off his cinnamon roll. He pulled Nyx out of his high chair, who was now playing with and wearing most of his food, rather than eating it, and said, “I’ll give him a bath while you get ready.”
“Okay.” He was nearly in the living room when he heard, “Cass?” He turned and looked back at her, still not completely used to the familiar nickname from her. She was blushing slightly. “Happy birthday.”
Smiling, he said, “Thanks,” and turned to head up the stairs.
Maybe today wouldn’t be so bad after all.
*
“Any birthday plans?”
“You’re looking at it.”
Kallias chuckled as he observed Cassian, a wiggly baby strapped to his chest, counting the liquor bottles that lined the wall.
“How old are you anyway?” he continued, wiping down the bartop. “Thirty? Thirty-one?”
“You wound me,” Cassian muttered, scribbling a number down on his clipboard, not bothering to tell Kallias just how close to thirty he was getting to.
“I would say we should do shots to celebrate your big day,” Kallias began, taking Nyx’s outstretched hand. “But, I think your little housewife would disapprove.”
Cassian snorted. “If Nesta Archeron ever heard you call her such a thing, you’d lose a very important body part.”
“Not interested in that, thank you very much,” he muttered. “She ever gonna stop in, so I can see this terrifying woman you’ve told me about?”
“About that…” Cassian pulled Nyx out of the carrier and carried him into the back office, setting him down in the play pen. Grabbing the baby monitor, he made his way back into the front room.
Kallias looked up from where he was cutting limes at the bar. “About what?”
He leaned a hip on the bar and crossed his arms over his chest. “Nesta is going to be expanding the restaurant, adding a bar. That’s actually where she is right now, why I’ve got the kiddo with me. Didn’t really want him in a construction site.”
“Hot nanny couldn’t keep him?” Kallias asked, grinning.
Cassian rolled his eyes. “No, she’s sick. But, uh-.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m gonna be leaving and going over there, managing for her.”
Kallias eyes widened. “Oh. Shit.”
“Yeah. And I’d like you to come over there with me. Be my assistant manager at the new place.”
Kallias stopped cutting, mid-lime. “You do realize we are two out of five people that work here, right?”
Cassian nodded, slowly. “Yeah, I do. And I also know we can hire more people here.”
Kallias looked back down at his half-cut lime. “Assistant manager, huh?”
“It’s in a great part of town, we’d get amazing tips on top of already being paid more,” Cassian said. “It’s an amazing opportunity.”
“So I’d be stupid to say no, then?” Kallias asked, continuing to cut his limes.
“Incredibly stupid,” Cassian agreed.
Nyx’s happy babbling came through on the baby monitor.
“I’ll think about it,” Kallias said, at last.
“Think about it, then tell me yes, because I’m not going there without you,” Cassian said.
Kallias snorted. “You’re a shitty liar. You’re going, whether I go or not.”
“And why wouldn’t you come with me?” Cassian asked, facing his friend. He and Kallias had worked together for years, since Kallias came in at twenty-one, during his senior year of college. “You want to be stuck in this dive bar forever? I know you. You’re a creature of habit. If I leave you here, you’ll be here for the next twenty years.”
Kallias didn’t bother telling him it wasn’t true. He just shook his head. “I guess we better start interviewing people, then.”
*
The day did not go as planned. Cassian had to stay and help out until nearly five-thirty, and by the time Cassian walked in the front door, Nyx was knocked out cold in his car seat. He gently set it down and unbuckled him, carrying him into the kitchen. It smelled divine, like roasting herbs and cooked veggies, even if he couldn’t see anything radiating the delicious smells.
Nesta was also nowhere in sight, so he took Nyx up to his nursery and laid him down, setting the baby monitor back up where it usually sat. He slipped the screen in his back pocket and made his way back downstairs, hurrying out to his truck to get Nyx’s diaper bag and the folded up playpen.
As he was setting it back up in the living room, he heard the sliding glass door open and close and made sure he was making enough noise to alert Nesta of his presence.
“You’re home,” she said, leaning on the doorway. “Nyx asleep?”
“Out like a light,” he said, tossing the few toys he’d brought with him back into the pen. “He had fun though.”
“Good. Dinner is almost done,” she smiled. “I hope you’re hungry.”
“Starving,” he sighed and took another deep breath in. “It smells amazing.”
Turning, Nesta walked back into the kitchen. “Steak, garlic mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and green beans, and homemade rolls.”
He watched as she took the carrots and green beans out of the oven and placed them next to a plate of steak she must have just brought in from the grill.
Cassian’s mouth was damn near watering.
He looked at the spread as she spooned the mashed potatoes onto his plate. “I think I’m in love with you.”
Nesta tensed, then something like nervous laughter sputtered out of her mouth. “Well, I had to cook red meat for you on your birthday.”
“Does that mean you’ll be having yourself a steak, Archeron?” he asked, taking the full plate from her outstretched hands.
She gave him an amused look. “Hell no. You get both. I have a chicken kabob on the grill.”
Cassian licked his lips as he took his plate to the table. “Consider me a lucky man. Thank you.”
“Of course,” she said, clearing her throat. She piled her plate high with potatoes and veggies before going onto the deck and coming back with a grilled chicken kabob on her plate. She sat across from him. Cassian’s mouth was already full.
“How is it?” Nesta asked, cutting up a carrot before popping it into her mouth.
“Delicious,” Cassian said, mouth full. “So good.”
“If you don’t slow down, you won’t be able to enjoy the flavor,” Nesta said, knowing full well that he wouldn’t listen. Cassian practically inhaled everything on his plate within minutes.
He moaned, stretching back in his chair before running a hand through his hair. “I must say, Nes, you really outdid yourself.”
“Well, it was the least I could do after you worked and were on baby duty all day,” she said, popping a few green beans in her mouth.
They talked about their days as she finished eating. He told her about Kallias’ agreement to move to the restaurant, she told him about the beginning of construction.
They’d kept half the restaurant open, putting up a temporary wall to keep as much noise and dust out as they could, but the sooner the build was done the better. They both agreed on that.
“So, despite your switch with the cinnamon rolls this morning,” Cassian said from where he sat as she rinsed off their plates, “I’m fairly sure I saw a cake when I came downstairs.”
“Really now,” she said, and he saw the small smile on her face.
“Mhmm,” he nodded. “And, you know, I like cake.”
“And why, exactly, would I make you a cake?” She crooned, that little smile remaining.
“Because I’m the world's best roommate and uncle, obviously,” he said.
Nesta laughed as she stood. “Yeah, whatever.”
After exiting through the back door, she returned a moment later with a big, homemade cake.
It was exquisite.
Perfectly decorated and topped with vanilla and buttercream frosting, it read Happy birthday, Cassian!
As Nesta placed it on the countertop, Cassian asked, “Nesta, when the hell did you find time to make this?”
She shrugged. “Stayed up later and got up early. Didn’t have to be too early since you decided to sleep in today, but…” Her words trailed off. “I figured it was the least I could do.”
His mouth tightened, emotion he wasn’t expecting hitting him and he cleared his throat. “You gonna sing to me?” He asked, cracking a joke to break the tension that was slowly growing.
Nesta threw her head back and laughed. “Absolutely not.”
Cassian bit back his retort and the monitor in his back pocket went off, crying coming from upstairs.
“I’ll get him,” she said, standing up. “I’m sure he’s hungry. Will you cut up green beans and carrots for him?”
He nodded, the cake forgotten as he did what he was told, and Nesta returned with a bleary-eyed Nyx a few minutes later.
“Hi buddy,” Cassian said, chuckling at Nyx’s hazy expression. He was already sitting at the table with a plate of cut up food.
The second Nyx saw the display, he was whining and reaching for it.
“Slow down, you need to be buckled into your seat first,” Nesta said, shaking her head.
“I can’t blame him,” Cassian said, as Nyx was strapped into his high chair. “I’m starving when I wake up, too.”
Nesta rolled her eyes. “Men.”
The second Nyx’s diapered butt hit the seat, he was stuffing his mouth.
“I guess we should wait for him to eat the cake,” Cassian said, looking longingly at the cake.
Nesta chuckled. “No patience?”
“When it comes to homemade baked goods?” Cassian scoffed. “No.”
She snorted, which had Cassian raising an eyebrow. She looked at him. “What?”
“Nothing,” he replied, shaking his head. “That was just…cute.”
Nesta didn’t reply, but he swore she could see her cheeks heating as she turned to put the leftovers from dinner away.
Once Nyx’s plate was cleared, Nesta cut three slices of cake. One was barely a sliver, one was mostly icing and one was damn near a quarter of the cake. She took the one with extra frosting for herself, placing the small one in front of Nyx and the larger one in front of Cassian.
Again, Nyx wasted no time scarfing it down. Cassian didn’t either, helping himself to another, much smaller piece afterwards, but not touching it yet.
“You sure you don’t want to sing to me?” He asked, taking a bite of the cake. “It would complete my day.”
Nyx, an impending sugar crash, was already dozing again. Apparently, his day with Uncle Cassian had well and truly worn him out.
She rolled her eyes and wiped the excess cake off of Nyx’s face. Pulling him out of his high chair, she said, “No, I think I’m good.”
“I’m just saying,” Cassian pushed. “If you wanted to really wish me a happy birthday, a song would do.”
Nesta snorted, taking Nyx in her arms and swaying, back and forth. “You’ve never heard me sing.”
“If your singing is as good as your cooking, it must be amazing,” Cassian promised.
Nesta rolled her eyes. “Have I told you that you’re full of shit?”
Cassian pretended to debate it. “Maybe once or twice.”
Nesta chuckled, and said no more about it. “Finish your cake, Nazari. This little monster is ready for bed. I’ll put him down. It’s your birthday.”
It wasn’t that putting Nyx to bed was exhausting. Although sometimes it could be a chore, Cassian nodded and took another bite of his cake as Nesta and Nyx disappeared.
In their absence, Cassian cleared his plate.
The cake was delicious.
He knew Nesta was an amazing cook, but didn’t know that her baking skills were just as good. It was the best cake he had ever eaten. He was even considering getting himself a third piece, but decided against it as she rounded the corner back into the kitchen.
She sighed, falling into her chair. “That may have been record time to get him down. He was practically asleep before I’d even pulled the curtains shut.”
“He had a big day,” Cassian said, eyeing the piece of cake on her plate that she hadn’t even touched. “Taught him how to make a mojito. He’s a pro. Maybe we should hire him on at the bar.”
Shaking her head, Nesta cut into her cake and took a bite. She chuckled. “I’m sure that doesn’t violate any labor laws.”
“Nah, we’re his guardians,” Cassian said, waving a hand. “We can certainly get some free labor out of him.”
She rolled her eyes. “I honestly can’t tell if you’re kidding or not.” She took another bite of cake, and Cassian’s eyes dipped to her mouth. He was quiet for long enough that she asked, “What?”
He hesitated but said, “You’ve got a little—”
He didn’t finish his sentence, instead he leaned forward across the small space between them and swiped the frosting that was on the corner of her lips away with his thumb.
Nesta didn’t move.
She didn’t push him away, didn’t tell him to stop touching her, either.
Cassian’s thumb lingered against her lips, and when she looked up, he was already watching her, quietly.
She opened her mouth to say something.
What? She wasn’t sure.
But, when her lips moved, Cassian’s did, too.
He kissed her, softly, slowly, and Nesta melted right into it.

The week had passed by in a blur and by the time Saturday came, all Nesta wanted to do was sleep in.
But she couldn’t.
Sleeping in wasn’t possible anymore.
Her alarm had been set for seven, but she woke up with the sun peeking through her curtains at 6:45. She looked at the baby monitor on the nightstand. Nyx was still sound asleep in his crib.
With a groan, she covered her head with her pillow and tried to shut out the light, but it was no use.
She was wide awake.
May as well enjoy a cup of coffee before Nyx wakes up. Nesta tossed her legs over the side of the bed and tossed her robe over her pajama shorts and tank top. After pulling her long, golden-brown hair back, she was tiptoeing through the hall and down the stairs.
Once she reached the bottom of the stairs, she could hear noise coming from the kitchen.
The sizzling of bacon being dropped into a skillet.
She had expected it to be Cassian, of course, but what she wasn’t expecting was what he was wearing.
Or, she supposed, what he wasn’t wearing.
She wasn’t sure if she should go back upstairs, to give him privacy. But he was the one who had chosen to come downstairs like this, in one of the common areas of the house, so Nesta went ahead and walked into the kitchen. She aimed straight for the coffee pot, grateful to see a fresh pot already in the carafe. “Good morning.”
He turned towards her, that broad, muscular chest on full display, thanks to the white towel wrapped around his hips being the only thing he had on. “Morning, Nes. Hope you want breakfast.”
She continued to make her coffee, which was usually easy, considering it was one spoonful of sugar in black coffee, but she was having a distinctly hard time focusing on what she was doing.
She had seen Cassian without a shirt in before, at the few times they’d both been over to swim in Feyre and Rhysand’s pool, but there was something distinctly different about seeing him wearing a pair of swimming trunks and that towel. That towel that was sitting so low on his hips, she knew there could be nothing underneath it.
He didn’t even seem to notice, didn’t even seem to think about her reaction to him standing nearly nude in the kitchen, making breakfast. His hair was still wet, although the ends seemed to be drying.
She wondered if this is what he looked like in a towel, what he would look like in the shower.
She quickly shook the thought away, even though it couldn’t help but linger in the back of her mind.
“I’ve got eggs, bacon, and toast,” he said, his back to her. She watched his muscles expand as he moved pans around and turned off the burners. “Simple, but it’ll fill you up. We’ll need all the energy we can this morning.”
Nesta cleared her throat and gave him a nod as he turned to face her. It was true, and Nesta was unexcited about it. The two of them would spend their day trying to find a part-time nanny for Nyx for the days that the two of them were both at work at the same time.
They’d had plenty of applicants, some of whom seemed promising.
Nesta had her fingers crossed.
A plate was set down in front of Nesta, and for a moment, all she could do was stare at it. There was a smiley face made out of a bacon mouth and egg-eyes. Another plate was set in the middle of the table, piled high with toast and jam.
“What am I, two?” she asked, gesturing to the breakfast face in front of her.
Cassian chuckled. His plate was piled high with bacon and eggs. No room for faces. He sat across from her and leaned on the table with his elbows. “A little smiley face never hurt anybody.”
She said nothing, just picked up her fork and cut into the eggs. She hadn’t even told him she liked her eggs over-medium, but she was glad she did as the semi-runny yolk spilled out onto her plate. Nesta thought about starting something about it, about asking about food preferences before he assumed something, but it was too early and she hadn’t gotten to enjoy nearly enough of her cup of coffee. It was too early to fight. So instead she picked up a crispy piece of bacon and used it to pick up some of the egg, before popping it into her mouth.
Her eyes slipped closed and she tried not to moan.
How could a simple breakfast taste so damn good?
When she opened her eyes again, she assumed she hadn’t been completely successful in stopping her appreciative noises, because he was smirking at her as he brought his own coffee to his lips.
“Told you I make a mean breakfast,” he said, reaching for a piece of toast and slathering it in blackberry jam.
Clearing her throat, she ignored him and continued eating until her plate was completely empty. Just as she was about to get up to rinse it off, he stood, adjusting that damn towel to fit more snuggly around his hips, and picked up both of their plates. She tried her best not to watch the muscles shift in his back as he rinsed the plates and loaded them into the dishwasher. Tried her best, but found herself staring as she sipped from her coffee cup, but snapped herself out of it and got up as well, making Nyx a bottle for when he woke up.
As she shook the formula up, she asked, “Will you be putting clothes on before the applicants get here, or should I warn them this is going to be a clothes-optional interview?”
He glanced at her over a shoulder, as he began to clean the pan he’d cooked the bacon and eggs in, but turned right back to the sink. “Does my nakedness bother you, Nes?”
Damn him, she could hear the smirk in his voice.
“No,” she snapped. “And stop calling me that.”
“So, you like me in a towel, then?” he went on, turning the sink off as he put the final plate in the drain rack.
“You’re exhausting, you know that?” she asked, turning to face him full on.
He turned to her then, one brow raised as he ran a hand through his nearly-dried hair. “I’m just saying, if it bothers you, I’ll be sure to dress before I come down to slave away for you over the stove. But, if it doesn’t bother you, I have to admit that I like to completely dry before I put on clothes.”
No, it didn’t bother her.
No, she didn’t mind having her breakfast with a view.
No, she wouldn’t mind reaching out and feeling just how hard and defined his abs really were.
No, she would never admit to that.
Instead, she raised her chin and said, “I should wake Nyx up so he’s ready before the first applicant arrives.”
“So formal,” he grinned. “And here I thought we were having a nice, pleasant morning.”
A soft cry came from upstairs and she was immediately in motion, all thoughts of those abs and whether or not water from his shower would well in the defined divots of them gone. Snatching up the bottle she’d set on the counter, she turned and headed for the living room and the stairs beyond. “Put some clothes on,” was all
she called back to him as she hurried for Nyx’s nursery.
*
Nesta shut the front door, falling back against the wood, listening as the final interview made her way down the cobblestone walkway.
She sighed and made her way into the kitchen. She needed a glass of wine.
A bottle of wine was more like it, but a glass would do for now.
She found Cassian already standing behind a chair at the kitchen table, the resumes of each applicant spread out before him. “So,” she said, reaching into the fridge for the bottle of chilled, white wine. “What did you think?”
He blew out an equally exhausted breath, before shaking his head. “There was…a lot of variety.”
He was right. There was a woman who had to be in her seventies, who had brought an entire notebook of lesson plans, with her goal to have the one-year-old fluent in French before his third birthday. Then there was the thirteen-year-old who had lied about her age on the application, but promised she could ride her bike the mile and a half from her house every day they needed her. Just not until after three on school days.
“Too much variety,” she agreed. “That last woman was so boring she literally put Nyx to sleep.”
It was true. Nyx was currently sound asleep in the middle of his playmat in the living room, surrounded by his toys.
“I didn’t mind the retired librarian,” Nesta said, filling her wine glass to the brim.
Cassian scrunched his nose. “She smelled weird.”
Nesta scoffed. “I don’t think Nyx will be minding her smell. She was smart and was obviously good with him.”
“So was Viviane,” Cassian said, picking up an application off the table.
Nesta blinked. “Viviane?”
“Yeah, Viviane,” he said, showing her the application. “Smart. Bachelors in early childhood education. Lives three miles down the road.”
“Young, blonde, hot,” Nesta added, taking a drink.
Cassian raised an eyebrow. “So you do remember her.”
“I remember that she didn’t have near enough experience and she only listed one reference,” Nesta replied, taking the application and resume from him. She looked it over again. “She can’t be more than twenty-two years old.”
“What does her age have to do with it?” He asked, leaning down on the chair and looking at her. “She’s got good qualifications and Nyx loved her. She was one of the few he actually laughed and wanted to play with.”
It was true, he’d been extremely uncomfortable around most of the applicants. He cried the second a couple of them looked at him and had even spit up on one of them. But he had giggled with Viviane and genuinely seemed to like her.
“She hasn’t worked at a legit daycare or anything, but she’s been a one-on-one nanny before,” Cassian pointed out, as Nesta was reading the same thing on her copy of the resume. “And she said she could get us the numbers of her previous families. She just didn’t want to give them out without asking permission.” He smirked and crossed his arms over his chest. “Sounds like she’d respect our privacy, too. But go ahead, keep thinking of reasons she’s not a good candidate.”
Aside from her perky tits and ass, I can’t think of any. The words almost came from her lips, but Nesta ground her teeth.
“We have to agree on someone, and Viviane can start immediately,” Cassian continued.
Nesta stared at him for a moment.
He stared back, watching as she sipped from her glass. “I swear to the Mother, Cassian, if you fuck the nanny-.”
Cassian barked an unamused laugh. “You think I have absolutely no self control, don’t you?”
“I think you’re basing this choice off of what you want, not what Nyx needs,” she said, not breaking their eye contact.
“She may be hot, but fucking her would be a lot more trouble than it’s worth,” he admitted. “And Nyx is half Rhys. Don’t forget that. He liked to appreciate pretty things just as much as I do, and I’m sure Nyx will, too.”
Scoffing, Nesta set her glass down and went into the living room to get Nyx. “He’s a baby, not a grown man, with raging hormones. You’re disgusting.” She picked him up, still fast asleep from hearing about the nuances of the differences in a sitter and nanny from the old crone they’d spoken with last. “Call Viviane, let her know she starts tomorrow at eight.”
Cassian met her on the stairs. “I don’t work tomorrow, I can watch him.”
Nesta shrugged, but continued up, carrying a drooling Nyx to his nursery. She hadn’t noticed how close to his nap time it had gotten. “Think of it as an exercise in self-control then, and a test run. See how she does with Nyx and see if you can keep your dick to yourself.”
“I’ve kept it from you pretty easily, haven’t I?”
Nesta refrained from responding as she carried Nyx into the nursery and laid him down, cracking the door open behind her as she left. Walking back downstairs, she retrieved her wine, purposefully ignoring him, though she felt his eyes on her the whole time. She wouldn’t answer his question, was doing her best not to think about it, especially compounded with memories of him this morning.
She had no idea the muscles leading down by the hips could really be so defined. She thought the illustrious V that dragged your eye downwards on most male models was photoshopped in. Cassian, though, very much proved it not only existed, but that it was as distracting as she’d imagined it could be.
“I’m taking a bath,” she announced, heading back for the stairs. “Let Viviane know she got the job, but she can start whenever you want. If you’ll be off tomorrow, we don’t need to pay her to be here.”
She didn’t wait for his reply, and was in her room with the door shut a few seconds later. She took her time filling the bathtub with the things she found under the counter. There were oils and salts and bubbles and soaps, and by the time Nesta settled into the bubbly, warm water, the entire bathroom smelled like a spa. She sipped her wine, refusing to let her mind wander back to Cassian that morning, but by the time her glass was empty, her head was swimming and the water had begun to go cold.
She got out of the tub, watching as the water swirled down the drain and began toweling off.
And then, she had an idea, to give Cassian a taste of his own medicine.
She grabbed a clean, fluffy, white towel and wrapped it around her chest. And then she headed down to the kitchen for a refill.
Cassian was lying on the couch, one arm tossed behind his head, the other using the remote to flip through the stations on the TV.
He caught Nesta the moment her feet appeared at the top of the stairs.
Nesta’s heartbeat a little bit faster with every step she took.
“This is a new look for you,” Cassian said, simply, even though his voice had lowered an octave since the last conversation they had. “Especially considering you took the master bedroom so that you had your own private bathroom to avoid such run-ins with me.”
Nesta tossed her long, wet hair over her shoulder. “I figured it was okay since you’ve made it perfectly clear that you have no desire to crawl into bed with me. I deemed it safe territory.”
The glass still dangled between her fingers and she heard the couch creak as she turned the corner into the kitchen. She may have grabbed a towel that wasn’t quite as wide as the rest of them, one that didn’t quite come as far down her thighs. But if he wanted to prance around in nothing but his skin, she could do the same.
They were both adults. She had no interest in sleeping with him - so she told herself, at least - and he’d said he had no interest in her.
She poured what was left of the bottle in her glass and threw it into the trash with a clunk. She hadn’t realized she had so little left, but was fairly sure another bottle was in the wine cabinet.
Which was in the living room.
When she re-entered the living room, the volume on the TV was nearly silent and Cassian was sitting up, rather than laying down. One arm was draped across the back of the couch and the other still clutched the remote.
She could feel his eyes on her and she took another drink before reaching around the back of the cabinet for the key and unlocking it.
Not only did she grab another bottle of her favorite wine, but also a good bottle of whiskey, too.
“Planning on getting wasted?” He asked, quietly.
“Just stocking up,” she replied, locking the cabinet behind her. “Care for a glass?”
Cassian looked around the room, as if she would be talking to anyone else other than her. “Sure.”
“Whiskey, I assume?” she asked, going back into the kitchen for another glass.
The television was a little bit louder when she returned, but not by much.
She sat on the opposite end of the couch, and set the glasses on the coffee table in front of them. After retrieving the glass bottles, she poured.
Cassian remained perfectly quiet as she did so.
“Is this a truce?” he asked, as Nesta held the glass out toward him.
“This is a celebratory drink to commemorate finding a nanny today,” Nesta said, although her voice held no warmth. “No matter how young and inexperienced and doomed-to-fail she is.”
She held up her wine glass.
Cassian snorted as he clinked his glass against hers.
She wasn’t paying any attention to whatever he had playing on the TV, and she had a feeling he didn’t either, not as she could feel his stare burning into her. Enough so that she crossed her legs, unintentionally causing the towel to raise even higher attention on the outside of her thigh. It almost exposed her entire hip, which she wasn’t anticipating, but she had made the decision to come down here, to tease him by showing him what he had done to her. She wouldn’t let him see how much his gaze was affecting her.
Even if it was just the wine.
Or so she told herself.
She was just about to stand, to make some excuse for going upstairs when he set his glass down on the coffee table and cleared his throat.
“New house rule. Clothes are required in the common areas. Kitchen, living room, dining room,” he said, ticking them off one by one. “Bedrooms and bathrooms are the only places where this is allowed.”
He gestured towards her, without looking, to make sure his point was understood.
“Why?” She asked innocently, and then she threw his own words back into his face. “Does my nakedness bother you, Cass?”
“Quite the opposite,” he admitted, adjusting himself.
Nesta pretended she didn’t notice.
“I thought you had no issue keeping yourself in check with me,” Nesta said, her voice low. “I thought you weren’t some untamed male with raging hormones.”
“I’m not,” he said, reaching to refill his glass. “At least, not until a beautiful woman is sitting a foot away from me, soaked, in a towel, pouring me whiskey.”
“I’m not soaked,” she said, without thinking it through. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
When Cassian looked at her, he grinned, but his eyes were dark. “I meant your hair.”
Nesta knew her plan had immediately backfired, either that or she’d had far too much to drink, so she simply nodded and stood heading back for the staircase.
“Nes?”
She turned back to look at him, halfway up the staircase.
He was smirking, that glass of whiskey resting on the arm of the couch. “If you ever do find yourself soaked, you know where to find me.”
She was up the stairs and slamming her door in a flash, trying to ignore his quiet laughter.

MC Monday - HS Yearbooks - Tobias & Casey Edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Learn More Below...
Yearbook Photos:
Casey & Tobias's high school experiences were similar insofar as they were both very studious and driven, but also knew how to have some fun. (Some for Casey, a lot for Tobias.)
Casey's parents sacrificed to move to a more affluent suburb when she entered HS (something she did not like at all), but it was still a public school; Tobias went to Sidwell Friends, one of the most prestigious private schools in the DC area. It's typically the school of the President's children and he was in class with dignitaries, so it was a bit different.
As adults, they were both impressed with each other's selection of quotes. Both having picked quotes from individuals that the other admired very much as well.
Senior Poll:
Tobias chuckled when he saw that Casey and Ryan had been voted Cutest Couple. He told her he did not disagree, but that he and Casey would have killed that category if they had been in school together.
He was impressed that Casey was voted Most Likely to Succeed even though it was still a bit of a sore spot for him that he lost out (came in second) in that category. Of course, the person who beat him went on to become the youngest president of a small European nation, but Tobias said that's irrelevant.
Casey rolled her eyes and said "No shit!" when she was Tobias was Class Flirt. She pointed out that he continued to be until he met her. He kissed her and said, "That's just how magical you are, baby."
(Former yearbook editor geek - me - note here): Yep, a bit of a change in hairstyle for Tobias. Senior polls (at least in my school) were done mid-year and photos were taken after they were completed. Yearbook photos were taken the summer before senior year, so the man changed up his look. He was still caught after for flirting (and more) either way.
Yearbook Ads:
I picture Casey's mother Rose to be a scrapbooker, and therefore Casey's ad was homemade with a lot of love. I HC Rose and David quarreling over this, with him insisting they do something more traditional and "not embarrass the girl" and Rose tells him to shush because he doesn't know what he is talking about.
The note from her parents is a lyric from Tim McGraw's "My Little Girl". A song both of her parents love and they would dance around the living room to the song with her when she was younger. Tobias's school had 3 templates that parents could select from. Being that it was such a selective school, there were too many parents who were all but (and some actually) hiring PR firms to make the ads. Vivian was outraged because that was her exact plan.
Tobias's family note summed up his childhood, yes, a lot of love, but also the constant reminder that he needed to live up to the family name. He wasn't thrilled with the inscription, especially because he was going through some coming-of-age conflicts with his parents at the time. In retrospect, he feels bad about being difficult in regard to it, especially since his father is now gone. He did tell Vivian how much he appreciates it in later years.

Past week in San Jose
Hello blog people. This is it. This is the beginning of the unfiltered blog experience. This is the real deal, the real Nick in blog form. I’m here to drop blogs every week, informing people, Writing about things I like to write about. You name it it’s gonna be in this blog. Let’s get into the action, shall we?
I took an 11 hour flight from Paris, Orly to San Francisco this past Wednesday. My girlfriend Grace and I were traveling together because we were leaving France the same day. Everything was going super well until we took the 9518 bus to Charles de Gaul airport. That was really the beginning of a bad time for us. Grace, because she ended up leaving her phone in the bus, and me because I went to the wrong airport.
The Grace problem was amended over a longer period of time. It’s still the covid era, so we needed to get her a covid test so that she could get through and check in. However, her covid test was on her phone which she left on the bus. So, she had to get another one at the airport. Once she did get one, I realized my mistake. Paris Orly, my flight was at Paris Orly. Reliving it gives me hot flashes. I’m surprised I messed that up. I think about how if Grace and I traveled separately, then maybe we wouldn’t have ended up in such a situation. But, probably not worth finding out.
I order an uber from Charles de Gaul airport in north paris to orly airport in south paris.
I end up coordinating the phone’s pickup by calling it until the bus driver picks up. He tells me he’ll be back in Cergy France, where we were staying, at 5:22. That’s when I was passing through security. I told him that my friend could pick up the phone. Vivian came in clutch and got the phone basically by herself. She’s the dopest.
I get on my flight and wait those 11 hours. I land and my roommate I met on Facebook named Ty picks me up. He also works where I work so I had questions for him as soon as I landed. How’s work? What do we wear? Stuff like that. His answers have come in handy as time’s gone on.
I’m picking this blog up a week later. I’ve now lived in Downtown San Jose for a week and its had its ups and down. I met these guys when I signed up to volunteer at a local farm. I like volunteering to meet people and stuff like that. So I met them and they taught me about worms a little bit. Worms are agender? (whatever it’s called when they’re both a boy and a girl at the same time) and they lay eggs. Also, you know when worms have that white stripe thing? That means they’re pregnant. Anyways, I stayed there for a while and then took my roommate Alex over to a lunch thing they organized the next day.
Tumblr media
Free lunch if you can believe it
During the week, I got exposed to what I’d be working on. I met all the people I could work with and I like them a lot. I feel like my work is going to be very competitive in a lot of ways and that may be hard for me to deal with down the line.
Anyhow, I’m gonna sign off for the week. Excited to chill.
Sincerely,
Nick

“Words Fail” *Chapter 7*
Tumblr media
Chapter 6
Chapter 8
Alright I’m gonna go ahead and say it right now, for future reference: This is a separate world from canon SVU. I mean obviously, right. But it’s an alternate universe, so-- people who are gone in the “real” world of SVU, CAN BE alive in this one. Okay? Okay.
Now try and figure that out, lovelies. I promise you won’t see it coming.
Also, I’m sorry it’s so short, I was going to add a part to the end but it got long and convoluted, I swear a new chapter will be up tomorrow.

Five Months Ago
It had been a couple of days since the “diner incident”, and you hadn’t texted or called Rafael since then. You felt too guilty; you had even ditched the food before you got home that morning so you wouldn’t have to explain where you were to Cassie. You had just gone home and gone straight to bed, which is exactly where you should have been the whole time.
But now, here you were sitting in Olivia Benson’s apartment playing with her two- year-old son Noah and trying not to think about Rafael. But she was making it extremely difficult.
“So, Viv,” Olivia sat down on the couch next to you and handed you a glass of wine. She had already gotten one for herself, and Noah was on the floor playing with blocks while Spongebob played in the background.
“...Yes, Olivia?” You raised an eyebrow suspiciously.
“Rafa told me what happened the other day,” She said plainly.
“...About…?”  You weren’t about to give anything away.
“The kiss,” She wiggled her eyebrows.
“Oh my god,” You muttered as you gulped down the wine. “Olivia, look it wasn’t--”
“And he told me all about the hot and cold you’re pulling on him” She finished over you.
“Oh my god, what?!” You laughed. “What are you two, girlfriends at a sleepover?”
“Look, he’s my best friend. And we look out for each other--” She started to explain.
“Yeah, I can see that,” You rolled your eyes with a swig of your wine.
“Well it’s why he was so defensive at first, and why I’m questioning you now!” She defended their actions.
“You two are a trip, I’ll give you that Liv,” You shook your head, trying to stay calm.
“Excuse me?” She raised an eyebrow.
“Why does he constantly have you fighting his battles?” You raised your own skeptical eyebrow.
“Well, you’re the one dodging him after kissing him!” She exclaimed.
“He kissed ME!” You exclaimed. Not adding that you probably had initiated it with your words. “And it was a mistake,”
“A mistake?” Olivia furrowed her eyebrows, “Why was it a--”
“Look, we were just-- neither of us had slept, and it was just-- it was a bad idea, and I’m sorry I let him kiss me, but it shouldn’t have happened in the first place and it won’t happen again,” You stood up and started to pace as you talked, it happened when you got nervous. Which was a lot.
“Why not?” She pressed.
“Why do you care?!” You threw up your hands in frustration.
“I just said, because he is my best friend, Vivian. I want to see him happy,” She stood up once more and sat back down on the couch.
“And?” You gestured with your wine glass.
“And you make him happy!” She exclaimed once more before sipping from her own wine glass.
“Oh for christ’s sake--” You needed an out. You needed an excuse, and you needed one now. Then it hit you.
“Look, Olivia,” You stopped pacing and sat back down, ready to spin your explanation. “I’m not sure how long I’m even going to stay here, and I don’t need to start leading him on and then just take off on him,”
Granted you had no idea how you were going to ‘disappear’ after all of this, but one problem at a time.
“Why not?” Olivia asked.
“Why don’t I want to lead him on?” You asked in a sarcastic tone.
“Why do you have to leave?” She clarified.
“What?” You blinked, unable to think for a moment. Why would you leave, especially considering you actually DID live in the City.
“Why do you have to leave New York at all?” She reiterated.
“Uh--” Think, woman think. What’s a normal explanation?  “Because I have a life there?”
Good, obvious explanation right? Totally.
“Well didn’t you say that your only family was your father and Tucker? And now that your father’s gone, do you really have any ties to Albany?”
Dammit. Fuck. Why hadn’t you and Cassie made a new fucking white board before this meeting? She’d have answers for all of this. You were just the stammering idiot.
“All my stuff is there,” You blurted out.
Oh good, now what if she offers to rent a U-Haul and have Rafael drive across the state to get your imaginary stuff from your imaginary house?
“And it’s not like I have family here,” You quickly added.
“...But you could,” She gave you a soft smile and took your hand. Oh god. Oh no. No no no.
“Oh Olivia--” You started to dissuade her, but she put her hand up to stop you from speaking.
“Look, I-- I didn’t have any family either. For most of my life, actually,” She chuckled sadly. “But, when I joined SVU-- they became my family,”
Did you have a tattoo on your forehead that read: “Unload your trauma here,”? You didn’t need another sob story; you really didn’t know if you could handle it.
“Liv, I’m sorry you--” You started to speak once again, but she stood up from the couch and walked over to Noah before sitting next to him on the floor. He instantly crawled over to her and snuggled her.
“If I’ve learned anything about being in SVU, and living here as long as I have, is that sometimes the most important family you have is the one you make yourself,” She put Noah in her lap and kissed the top of his forehead before looking back up at you.
“Tucker and I-- we were going to be a family,” She said very softly with tears in her eyes.
“Oh you were engaged?” You tried not to sound too emotional. This was getting worse by the second.
“No, I mean yes but--” She paused, trying to hide tears in her voice. “We weren’t together when he died, but it wasn’t because we didn’t love each other,”
“What do you mean--?” You started trying to get her to unpack her own stuff, maybe she’d get too upset and you could get out of there. It was cruel, but you were desperate.
“It doesn’t matter,” She waved her hands dismissively. You thought better at trying to press her anymore; she really did look distraught just talking about him.
“What matters is that we--,” She pointed between the three of you. “We could be a family, if you let us,”
“The three of us, or your whole family ‘squad’?” You raised an eyebrow. Didn’t she just say her whole unit was her family? That sounded like quite the commitment.
“Well, I mean we are a packaged deal,” She smiled.
Wait, family. That could be a good cover.
“So, adding to that thought,” You gave her an earnest look. “Wouldn’t that mean Rafael would be a part of that ‘family’?”
“Well, sure but that doesn’t mean--” Olivia started, but you had to get your full thought out before she had any other solutions.
“Olivia, like I told Rafael the other day,” You shook your head. “If we-- started something, and it went badly-- that would only hurt our relationship,” You gestured between the two of you.
“And if you really want me to be a part of your family, wouldn’t it be better for everyone if that just meant Rafael was more like my dad or--” You stopped short, hearing the words come out of your mouth instantly made you want to vomit. Olivia made a face that mimicked your thoughts.
“Yeah, I heard it too,” You made a gag voice. “Okay, like--- an Uncle-- Cousin--?”
You were making it worse by the second.
“Look you know what I mean!!!” You hit her playfully as she laughed.
“Yeah, I know,” Her laughter subsided to a sad smile. “I suppose it would be better,”
After a moment, she stopped laughing and looked at you very seriously, but hopeful.
“Does that mean you’re going to stay?” She finally asked as she put a hand on your knee.
You looked at the floor for a long time, trying to find the courage to say something. “Yeah, I think I will,”
Well, It wasn’t like you really had a choice.
------------
“Her Uncle?!” Rafael tried not to throw up in his mouth. “Tell me those weren’t the exact words she used,”
“Well no, initially she said dad--” Olivia tried not to laugh at Rafael’s face becoming more horrified at the word ‘dad’.
“JESUS, Olivia,” He put his hands over his face.
“Look, you get what she meant Rafael, don’t be dramatic,” Olivia teased him.
“I know,” He shook his head as he gave her a small smile.
“And...you know she might be right,” She added reluctantly.
“I know she’s right Olivia, that’s why I’m so upset!” He groaned as he walked away from her.
“...I’m sorry,” She followed him and put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
And yet, here he was at your door at 9 o'clock at night. He knocked on the door forcefully and waited for you to answer.
“Yeah, me too,” He said softly.
--------
That was this morning, the discussion was fresh in his head. He knew Olivia was right, he knew he should think of you as...well he couldn’t even say it.
Luckily, Cassie had gone out on some suspicious errand, so you were home alone watching a movie. You got up and swung open the door, revealing the one person you were trying not to think about right now standing in front of you.
“Oh my god, can you not take a hint?!” You cried angrily.
“Excuse me?” He looked at you confused.
“Oh don’t give me that, you and Olivia are worse than teenage girls,” You rolled your eyes. “She probably told you exactly what I said as soon as I walked out the door!”
“Not immediately…” He said playfully.
“Right,” You rolled your eyes once more. “So I know she told you what I said, about the other day being a mistake,”
“Yeah…” He muttered.
“And about you and I being…’family’,” You went on.
“I don’t exactly kiss my family like that,” He gave you a huge smirk. If you weren’t so mad or worried about your cover, you’d be melting from it right now.
“Fuck off, you know I meant from now on,” You kept your composure and your fight face on.
“But I know you don’t mean it,” He kept smirking as he walked into your apartment.
“What the hell are you talking about?!” You looked at him in disbelief at the sheer disregard of boundaries he was using.
“You know you can’t stay away from me,” He kept his smirk as he circled your living room.
“Um, let’s look at the facts,” You crossed your arms. “You got MY number from Olivia. YOU texted me to meet you at the park,”
“Which you did,” He smiled.
“...And then YOU texted me because I butt dialed you on ACCIDENT,” You ignored him.
“Sure it was,” He smirked once more.
“And then YOU invited me to breakfast,” You kept right on talking over his snarky comments, determined not to give into his arrogant swagger.
“Which you showed up for,” He licked his lips, still claiming innocence.
“And YOU kissed ME,” You finally said emphatically, trying not to stare at his lips while you said.
“Because you wanted me to,” He smirked even harder when he noticed your stare.
“Oh my god,” You muttered while you felt your cheeks running hot. Your words were saying no, but your body was betraying you.
“Look Vivian,” He stepped closer to you. “I get that you-- why, you think that we shouldn’t be together. And I think that maybe you really do believe that,”
“But?” You quirked an eyebrow.
“But you can’t say that as soon as we’re near each other, all your excuses and logic go straight out the window,” He smiled as he stepped closer.
“EXACTLY!” You threw your hands up. “That’s what scares me!”
“You don’t think I’m scared?” Rafael asked with a laugh. “I told you that I don’t...like people. I don’t let people in, EVER. It took me six months to warm up to Olivia, and she is my favorite person in the world! But with you, it just...happened. Without me doing anything. THAT is scary. I’m absolutely fucking terrified of you, of us,”
“...But?” You waited for an explanation
“But I’d rather be scared with you, than be scared of you,” He put a hand on your waist, pulling you ever so slightly towards him. “...If that makes any sense,”
“Yeah,” You nodded, letting him pull you further.
You knew you shouldn’t, you knew you needed him to just leave and let this go. But he was right about the vicinity of your bodies affecting any logical thought your brain had.
“So, be scared with me?” He pulled you even closer, glancing at your lips with a mischievous smile.
“Yeah,” You murmured dreamily, not really thinking of anything else but how those lips tasted.
Rafael quickly caught on to this and closed the gap between your mouths with a passionate kiss. This kiss seemed even more intense than outside the diner, maybe because it was a second kiss. Or because it wasn’t freezing, and you weren’t sleep deprived. Or maybe it was because you were finally letting yourself feel something other than dread and fear.
Before you could enjoy yourself too much, the soul crashing reality came crashing down on you once more. You could hear Cassie coming up the stairs, and fast.
“You have to go,” You started to push him out the door.
“What, why?” Rafael was absolutely bewildered. Here you were with the hot and cold again, after just promising to stop.
“Because Cas--Kit, is coming,” You prayed to God he didn’t hear that slip up. He didn’t seem to, he was just concerned about you forcing him out.
“So?” He stood in the hall unmoved.
“So, she CAN’T see you here,”
“Why not?” He laughed. “Is she like your mom or something?”
“No, but--” You could hear her footsteps getting closer, and to make it worse, you could hear someone with her.
“Oh god,” You were really starting to panic now. Whoever she had with her would not be happy to see the ADA of New York in your hallway, you knew that much.
“You have to go, RIGHT NOW,” You grabbed his hand and started running towards the opposite set of stairs.
“Why are you being like this?” He became really concerned at the tone in your voice and the look of terror on your face. “Is--Does-- Are you in danger, Viv?”
“No,” You assured him. “No, I can’t--” You could hear the talking and laughing reach your door. You heard it open and the two of them walk inside.
“I can’t explain it right now, okay? Just...trust me, please?” You gave him the most pitiful look, you had no focus on the con right now. You just wanted him to make it out of here alive.
“I trust you,” He finally conceded, making your guilt practically eat you alive in that hallway. He wiped a strand of hair behind your ear and kissed you softly once more before heading down the stairs. You waited a moment before walking back towards your apartment. You took a deep calming breath and opened your front door.
“Baby girl!” Cassie beamed at you as she walked to envelope you in a hug. “Where the fuck were you?” She hissed in your ear.
“I--” You paused. “Took the trash out,” You whispered back.
“Ah, well that was nice of you, sweets,” She smiled once more.
“That WAS nice of you, Angel,” An all too familiar adult male voice came from behind you, having just stepped out of the bathroom. No, it couldn’t be…
You slowly turned around and mustered the biggest fake smile you could, as you walked over to the man slowly.
“Hi, daddy,”
--------------------
Present Day
Rafael made it to the top of your stairs before collapsing into sobs. While he was crying, he thought back to the first time he had come here. That day, you had tried so hard to get him to leave so quickly. He remembered the specific look and fear in your voice, and how concerned he was. But the next time he saw you, you were perfectly fine. So he must have just pushed the thought away...until now.
He got up and walked back towards your apartment, where you still had the door open. Your jaw slightly dropped at the sight of him walking back towards you. You fought the urge to jump into his arms for coming back, you weren’t going to push your luck right now.
“...You did try to warn me,” He said softly.
“I did,” You bit your lip as you started to cry again. “And...there was a good reason, I swear to God Rafael. That’s why I’m doing this,”
He just nodded again and walked into the apartment where the rest of the squad was still standing in the living room dumbfounded.
“So,” He turned back to you and folded his arms.
 “You want to talk? Talk,”

⤷ Day 4: Atsumu Miya + friends to lovers
Synopsis: you’re in love with your roommate and best friend, Atsumu Miya... and maybe he feels the same way too
Word Count: 839
Pairing: Atsumu Miya x fem!reader
Fluffvember Masterlist
When you decided to move in with the idiot Miya Twin, you knew your life would be full of messy nights and unintentional babysitting.
But you didn’t expect the nights where he would fall asleep next to you while watching a movie, his face the gentlest of expressions. You also didn’t expect the days where he would return home from practice only to have picked you up some mochi despite his exhaustion. Perhaps that is why you had fallen in love with the idiot Miya Twin, because he always was more than that.
So even as you were picking up his sweaty jersey off the living room floor of your shared apartment, you couldn’t help but grin at the surrealness of it all.
Your best friend was currently playing one of the biggest matches of the season and you had chosen not to go despite his desperate pleas because you had to study for a huge exam coming up.
You could envision your setter’s determined face as he set the ball to Hinata with perfect timing because of all the previous games you’ve been to in the past.
After cleaning up Atsumu’s mess and tidying up your own bedroom, you check your phone to see 7:00pm reflecting off the screen. Atsumu should’ve been done by now but knowing him, his team won and they were going out for drinks. You heaved a sigh and prepared yourself for drunk Atsumu, the worst of them all.
Another hour passed before the door creaked open and a sloppy looking Atsumu wobbled in only to meet your stern face with a cup of water in hand. His face lifted into a dopey smile and moved to embrace you before you placed a hand in front of his chest, halting him in an open-armed position.
“Water first,” you said, your voice demanding and full of control and he obliges, taking the cup of water from your hand and gulping it down with ease.
But this Atsumu wasn’t like the other wild and irresponsible drunk Atsumus you’ve faced. This one was gentler, calmer, and a bit subtler with his advances.
You snap out of your daze and make your way to the kitchen to make him a sandwich to soak up the alcohol. You’re rummaging through the fridge when you feel a familiar hand on your waist. You’re yelping as you turn around to face a strange looking Atsumu in front of you.
Atsumu pins his hands on either sides of your head, trapping you in your spot between him and the now closed fridge.
“Do you like me?” He asks, eyebrows furrowing and you almost think he’s being serious.
Instead, you’re lightly pushing against his chest and smiling nervously, “ok lover boy, you can kabedon me another time.”
But Atsumu stays firm, refusing to let you go until you’ve answered his question.
“I’m being serious—“
“You’re drunk…”
“But these feelings are real!” Atsumu blurts out.
You’re not sure what to say as you search his eyes for any sign of insincerity. When you can’t find a trace of it, you drop your hands and let him continue.
“Fuck all the hiding. You think I haven’t noticed all the times you’ve cleaned up my messes or made me dinner when I couldn’t even pick myself up from practice. Or even the times you cheered me on at matches regardless of how busy you were…” he trails on, “and it killed me that you didn’t come see me win today.”
You didn’t realize how hard it had become to breathe until he finished his rant. Atsumu has never been this transparent with you in his life. Sure, he’s told you things here and there, being his best friend and all, but this was something entirely different.
“And what if I said yes, I do like you?” You ask in barely a whisper.
“Then I’d never let you go,” he responds in the same volume and you know he’s about to pass out, which he does.
You lug his 6’2, 177lb body onto the nearby couch with whatever strength you could muster (and it took you awhile yes, but you got there) and laid a blanket over him.
He really does look so innocent and adorable when he’s asleep and you couldn’t help but think about his words tonight. You know this boy like the back of your hand and you know that the way he acted tonight was genuine.
You kneel down to level with him and plant a kiss on his forehead, “guess what tsumu? I do love you. Sweet dreams.”
BONUS: you awoke to a very cocky Atsumu boasting about how he remembered the whole thing and that it was all part of his meticulous plan to get you to confess… and it worked! You roll your eyes as he proceeds with a diabolical laugh and trudge out of bed to make breakfast. What you wouldn’t do to shut this boy up. Good thing you love him and yes, he loves you too.

My thoughts on Debbie Reynolds & Gene Kelly
Ok most people who follow my blog, like Gene Kelly. And if you do, you’ve probably heard the stories about Gene & Debbie on the set of Singin’ in the Rain. So here’s my take.

LB Meyer saw Debbie as an up-and-coming star and wanted her in the role of Kathy Seldon. How much Gene Kelly agreed to it is debatable. He wanted someone with dancing experience for the part. His last two leading ladies were Vera Ellen & Leslie Caron, both gifted dancers. He likely already had some ideas on what kinds of numbers he wanted to do and knew they would be difficult for a novice to learn in a short amount of time.
He did have quite a bit of experience teaching novices, you know.
Tumblr media
Complicating matters, they did not have Donald O’Conner forever, he was borrowed for a limited number of weeks, meaning they didn’t have forever for her to learn. Gene had considered making Donald part of the Broadway Melody number but that idea got nixed when he had to leave for another project. So her novice status did affect the film.
Gene tested her with a basic time step and Maxi Ford which she did not know. LB insisted she’d learn it, removing any question over who would be cast as Kathy.
I think Gene bristled over LB’s order. As a side note Gene acted badly over another LB order years earlier. When Gene first got to Hollywood he’d gone to a big party put on by Meyer (which he hated). Guests included Vivian Leigh who was going thru a difficult time and drinking heavily at the party. LB told Gene to go dance with her to cheer her up, saying she’d always wanted to dance with him. Gene hated being ordered to do something he didn’t want to do.
Now Gene loved Vivian but hated dancing at parties because as soon as he hit the floor all eyes turned to him. People expected a show. After they started dancing he could tell she was too drunk, it would be awkward. So he asked if they could just sit this one out. Then he saw the look of disappointment and shame on her face as she dragged him back to her table. He said he wanted to kill himself after he said it, because he didn’t mean to hurt her but it was LB’s demand that put him in such a foul mood.
Tumblr media
I think it was much of the same with Debbie. He knew how hard it would be, but LB acted like dancing was no big deal, as if anyone could do it. I think at that point Gene had it set in his mind that he wasn’t going to simplify the routines for a her, so LB said she could do it, ok let’s see her do it. Debbie got caught in between. She did it tho, and she always talked about it with pride later, like a soldier remembering her drill sergeant from boot camp.
She did enjoy recounting the stories about him for her shows. This one, the kiss, and the one where she left gum on the ladder (why she took it out before the scene and stick it on there I’ll never know), and when he leaned against it his toupee came off. He never responded to any of it but she made sure she and others got a good laugh at his expense.
Tumblr media
Gene did recognize his poor behavior later and apologized. It certainly doesn’t excuse it but it makes more sense taken within the context of the LB-Gene rivalry. Of course, Gene didn’t admit to all this. He didn’t get into media feuds. He did later say she was perfect for the part, “strong as an ox,” and couldn’t believe she was still speaking to him. Years later, he even caused her to tear up when he went backstage at her Broadway show and told her how proud he was of her.

I am not sure you are taking requests or not, but I got this idea and I really wished you could write something for it, 'about Eisuke falling in love with his secretary and make it a bit dramatic'. I know it may be a lot to ask but all your written works have been so beautiful, I just had to ask you. No problem if you couldn't do it :).
Hi there! I’m so glad you sent a request! Yes my requests are open, I only just realised that I haven’t put it anywhere on my blog that they are open... oops! Anyway, I’ve never written a secretary story before so this was definitely a challenge, thanks to @flatsuke and @leoamber66 for helping me find a solid plot to use. And thanks to @lin-ful for just being amazing! This story is 8000+ words so that’s why it took some time to get this to you. I hope this is what you wanted, if not I hope you at least appreciate the time and effort I took to writing this. Enjoy!
Keep Me By Your Side
They say patience is a fool’s game. Waiting for love will weigh your heart down heavily like an anchor in the ocean. But saying ‘I love you’ to Eisuke Ichinomiya will get you nowhere fast. What does he know about love? Kindness? Happiness?
He was young when he was made CEO of the Ichinomiya Group. He was even younger when he lost his mother to the scythe of death, when he lost his sister to a different, better, whole, and lovable family. When he lost his father to the mist of uncertainty. What could a man filled with emptiness from a traumatic childhood, know about love?
He’s arrogant but he’s suave. A businessman through and through. Ruthless and cunning. Intelligent and sarcastic. Sweet-toothed with hidden compassion. A passionate hater of peas. A wonderful smile when he is genuine. And believe me, I have only ever seen this smile once in my whole career.
He never gets drunk and he spends more time at his auctions than with women. No woman other than me has stayed longer than a night at his penthouse. No other woman knows that Eisuke prefers warm weather to cold. No other woman knows how he likes his coffee: sweet using three sugar cubes and milk. I still remember the first time I made him coffee.
‘It’s adequate.’
‘Really?!’
‘Do it again. It needs more milk.’
‘Okay!’
I remember when he told me about his life. I remember his touch when he wiped away dewy tears. Telling me that it was a long time ago. That he just wants the truth. Closure.
That’s why, as his secretary, I have to be there for him. Because Mr Ichinomiya, founder, and owner of the Tres Spades Hotels around the globe, the mastermind behind the black market auctions and my boss, has brought me down to my knees…
In love.
I am in love with Eisuke Ichinomiya.
I want to shout it out to the world.
Scream it at the top of my lungs as if his name is my breath.
But I can’t.
Because I am only his secretary.
*
‘Here’s your schedule for today. After lunch, you have a meeting with a potential investor for the new Tres Spades Restaurants. He wants to propose different menus and VIP arrangements plus staff requirements for the restaurant in Sydney, Australia.’ I hand Eisuke his tablet and a folder filled with paperwork.
‘Hm. And the auctions?’
‘All set. Baba is still looking for the specific item that you requested but we have plenty of other materials to sell tonight. Soryu has sent the invitations and Mamoru will get back to you about the increasing police activity here lately. And Ota… well he’s being Ota.’
‘Pfft, of course he is.’ Eisuke looks up at me.
‘And Luke?’
‘He nearly fondled my collarbones… again. But he is ready to proceed with the surgery this week.’
Eisuke narrows his eyes at me.
‘Tell Luke to come see me before then. And you know better than to visit Luke immediately after a surgery.’
I rub the back of my head nervously.
‘Well, you told me to see him right away so… I was just following orders.’ Eisuke sighs in response.
‘Oh! And Luke told me to tell you that he needs another x-ray of your collarbones.’
‘Why? I already gave him one a few months ago.’ The annoyance is written all over his features.
‘Because he left it in the other clinic in New York. Luke doesn’t have an x-ray here in Tokyo.’
He unconsciously pouts at his laptop screen.
‘Isn’t one enough?’
‘Apparently not…’ It takes everything in me not to stroke his head to comfort him.
‘What about your collarbones?’
‘When we got back, while you were still in London, Luke did a medical examination on me so he got an x-ray of mine.’
‘Remind me to ban him from using the x-ray machine.’ I reply with a giggle instead of words.
‘Vivian.’ He says with urgency.
I salute military style.
‘Yes sir!’
‘… You would make a clumsy soldier.’
‘Hey!’
‘If there’s nothing else, get me coffee and leave.’
I bow and attend to my duties. After giving Eisuke his coffee, I head down to the lobby to find Mr Kenzaki. The lobby is busy as always with staff running around attending to the whims of the guests. New guests checking in and old guests leaving satisfied by their stay. The Tres Spades never disappoints.
I spot Mr Kenzaki by the reception. I catch his eye and he walks towards me by the penthouse elevator.
‘Ah Vivian, is there something you need?’
‘Yes, the Boss will need the conference room after lunch. We will need it for a few hours.’
‘Of course, I will have it set up. Do you need the projector?’
I think for a moment.
‘I’m not entirely sure but set it up anyway. Better to have it on and not use it, than need it when it’s off.’
He smiles warmly at me.
‘I understand. I am glad to see that you have become a capable and worthy secretary to Mr Ichinomiya.’ I blush at his teasing words.
‘Thank you. But we both know that Boss would choose you over me any day of the week.’
‘Haha, I’m not quite sure he is that attached.’ I highly doubt that actually, but I don’t tell him that.
‘The guest is Mr Lance and he will be arriving in a few hours. Make sure the lobby is prepared. Boss and I will come down to greet him.’
‘Very well. Make sure to take breaks every now and again Vivian.’
‘Yes, I will.’ Mr Kenzaki has always been obedient and thoughtful. I admire his dedication to Eisuke and the others plus he was a huge help to me when I first started working at the Tres Spades. He’s almost like an uncle or a grandfather (I’m sorry Mr Kenzaki! I promise you’re still young!) to me and the others.
I return to the elevator, swipe my key card, press no. 51 and watch the metal doors close. Turning around, I watch the outside world grow smaller and smaller as the elevator pulls up. There was a time when I was bewildered by the sheer size of this hotel. Over 50 floors of suites and boutiques and shops and the auctions all bundled into one.
Funnily enough, I worked with Eisuke’s adopted father, Akira Ichinomiya before I came to work for Eisuke. Akira took me in when I was first starting out in business and he taught me the ropes. He introduced me to Eisuke a little after Akira retired and, although he retired, he still worked within the Ichinomiya Group to make things a little easier for Eisuke. We met a few times over the years before Akira decided to send me to Japan to work for Eisuke as his secretary instead. I was more than miffed to hear of his decision without consulting me, especially since we had gotten so close with each other. I lost my grandfather when I was young so Akira ended up filling in that void.
Akira assured me that Eisuke would teach me more about how the Ichinomiya Group runs and I couldn’t say more. With my salary increased and bags packed, I got into the private jet and waited to see my new boss.
Looking back, I think I put up a bit too much of a fuss because Eisuke became a wonderful teacher, and a great friend. He listened to me and my problems even though he never needed to.
‘I have to make sure that my employees are at their best. Physically and mentally. Hearing your small problems is nothing to the value you are as my secretary.’
His words back then bring a whole new meaning to me now. I hope he means them in the way that I think they mean. That he cares about me.
A vibration courses through me as my pager goes off. I pluck it out of my belt and answer it.
‘Hello?’
‘Vivian! Where are you? Come to the penthouse! I have something to show you!’ Baba’s excited voice reminds me of a child but I wait to see what he has in store.
*
‘Ta da!’ Baba’s jazz hands do nothing to appease the sight.
A large statue of Venus towers over us all as we gape at it.
‘How did you get it in here?’ I ask, bewildered.
‘That’s a secret.’
‘Did you break it in half?’ Ota asks next.
‘No! This is priceless!’
‘Then how did you bring it into the lounge?’ Soryu says.
‘That is also a secret!’
‘He used the helicopter and the window.’ Mamoru mumbles from the couch.
‘Oooooohhhhhh’ Ota and I say at the same time. Baba pouts in response.
‘Mamo! Don’t go giving away my secrets!’
‘That’s not my job. That’s Ayase‘s job.’
‘This isn’t what I asked for Baba.’ Eisuke glares at him after inspecting the statue.
‘Ah yes, well. The item belongs to a Mr Jason Taylor Lance. I believe his father is coming to the hotel today.’
‘He is.’ I say.
‘Fine, I’ll get it from him instead.’
‘What is this thing you’re looking for anyway Eisuke?’ Ota asks.
‘It’s a collection of gems found at a temple in Egypt. Rumours of the gems suggest that a whole manner of good things will happen to those who possess them. I figured they would go for a very high price at the auctions.’ Eisuke smirks.
‘They were unearthed a few years ago and have found their way to Japan.’ Eisuke explains. Baba sighs.
‘Well I need more time to find the exact location.’
‘Fine.’
‘Ota can you appraise the statue for me?’
‘Okay.’ He goes back to his room while I prepare coffee and tea. When he comes back, he puts on white rubber gloves and uses a magnifying glass around the statue. I check my emails, replying to some and deleting others when Ota quips:
‘It’s fake.’
‘WHAT! Are you sure!?’
‘Yeah. It was created with cheap materials. An amateur’s work.’ He says it in such a matter-of-fact tone that I don’t comprehend it for a moment.
‘You would never know just looking at it.’
‘Yeah but if you sell it then the person buying it would most likely be an art collector and they appraise everything.’ He sits down and takes out his phone.
‘Unlucky Baba. Just like your sex life.’
‘Hey!’
‘Baba take that thing out.’ Eisuke orders.
‘Alright, alright. Sor help me out.’
‘Why me?’ Soryu and Baba heave the statue out of the penthouse.
*
Eisuke and I have lunch and then we venture out to the lobby. Just as we exit the elevator, Mr Lance enters the hotel. He is a big man wearing a white suit and a silver chain around his neck. His bald head shines in the glow of the lights and I can hear his shoes squeak against the marbled floor. He spots us and smiles.
‘Mr Lance, I am glad you could make it.’ Eisuke plasters on his signature business smile, holds his hand out for a shake and I bow from beside him.
‘Eisuke, please call me Connor. If we are going to be business partners, we should at least start with first names.’ He wraps both Eisuke and I in a bear hug and I nearly gag from the heavy cologne smell. Mr Lance is overly-friendly and I can already tell that this meeting is going to be a long one.
When he lets us go, Eisuke straightens his suit.
‘Please follow me to the conference room.’ Eisuke walks away while I turn to Mr Lance.
‘Shall I carry your briefcase for you, sir?’ I ask politely.
‘Of course, please.’ He looks at me for a moment. During my time as Eisuke’s secretary, I have met many individuals who have looked at me in inappropriate ways but Eisuke is always there to make it clear my place by his side. Still, I always stand my ground. Even now, as Mr Lance studies my face when he suddenly gestures to the case on the floor and follows Eisuke.
I’m not sure what that look was on his face but something tells me that this meeting will twist horribly.
*
‘Of course the staff will be perfect in their presentation but I believe that…’
Mr Lance, despite his ‘we-should-use-first-names’ greeting, is actually quite the businessman. He and Eisuke have been discussing the chain of Tres Spade restaurants and how to profit the most without hindering their guest’s experience.
‘The Tres Spades always delivers in high quality standards. Our guests and what they desire are our top priority.’
‘I have no doubt. Reviews of your hotels are 100% which I completely agree with. But if we could…’
Although, they are at a stale-mate right now. Neither is willing to backdown which is making me nervous. Mr Lance is more insistent on getting his way and so is Eisuke.
‘Sir?’ I finally pipe up from my corner in the room.
‘Hm?’ Eisuke looks at me.
‘May I suggest something?’
‘I hope you do not mind.’ Eisuke says to the man opposite him.
‘Please, a second opinion is always valuable.’ Mr Lance says, nodding in my direction.
‘Well, I suggest that the guests are given a form to personally write down any changes they want or need to the menus. This way, waiters will be more efficient obtaining orders and will limit any commotion that may arise.’
‘Paper forms will get lost or damaged very quickly in a kitchen.’ Eisuke says.
‘Hm, electronic tablets? With the entire menu and a writing stylus or Bluetooth keyboard to use.’
‘The keyboard would be too bulky on a table for guests.’
‘Why not use both? Paper and technology alike. Reservations will need specifications on which apparition the guests would like to use. Spontaneous guests first arriving will be asked immediately before seating if they require the keyboard or stylus.’ Mr Lance suggests.
‘That would be agreeable for me.’ Eisuke says.
‘I also.’ Mr Lance responds.
I breath a quiet sigh of relief. Mr Lance looks at me again before turning to Eisuke.
‘Before I sign this contract, I would like to add something to this.’
‘Such as?’
‘You see, I have a son, who I assume is the same age as your secretary?’
I glance at Eisuke briefly before saying hesitantly, ‘I am 28 years old, sir.’
‘Ah perfect! I have a son who could use a woman like you by his side.’ At those words, both Eisuke and I look at each other. He glares at Mr Lance who does not seem to notice.
‘You are an impeccable woman. In just a few hours, I have seen your beauty, your perfect manners and now your incredible intelligence as a woman working in the business sector of society. I believe you would be a wonderful wife to my son and an even better daughter-in-law to my wife and I.’
‘What are you suggesting, Mr Lance?’ Eisuke could be a snake he spat out those words so viciously.
Mr Lance does not break eye contact with Eisuke. Actually, it seems as if he is not intimidated at all by Eisuke, which, despite his words, is impressive.
‘I will sign this contract. Only if your secretary agrees to marry my son.’
‘That is outrageous, as if I would agree to such a thing.’
‘I am not asking you, Mr Ichinomiya. I am asking her.’
There is so much tension in the air that I can see it. Literally. So if I don’t agree, Mr Lance will walk out of the project. But if I do… While there are other investors, Mr Lance has a large influence on the economy, just as much as Eisuke does. He’s too important to deny.
Maybe I should convince him to sign without the marriage?
‘If I may, Mr Lance, I am hardly worthy of being part of your family. I have no wealth which you would consider rich, neither do I have many connections or the reputation to be married into your family. The public and the media would, quite frankly, have a field day about this marriage which could result in backlash on your family and mine. Please, reconsider this.’ I think half way through, my reasoning became a plea.
‘My secretary has never met your son and neither have I. She has worked for me and my company for years. Her well-being is my responsibility.’
Mr Lance thinks over our arguments calmly, as if he has done this a hundred times to other employers and their employees.
‘Very well. Why don’t I have my son stay at the hotel for a week? They can get to know each other and when she agrees to the marriage, then I will sign the contract. Until then,’ he pushes the folder away, ‘I will not sign. This is final.’
He gets up, leaving his business card, and walks out whistling to himself.
*   (EISUKE’S POV)
‘That bastard really believes that he can have whatever he wants just because I need him to invest in the project.’
‘Did he really ask you for Vivian’s hand in marriage?’
‘To his son?’
‘…..’ I don’t answer, I only glare at Baba and Ota who hide behind Vivian and Soryu.
Mr Lance has attempted something that I have never seen in my whole career. A marriage proposal during a business deal? Mixing his personal life with his work is extremely amateur for a man who has been in business for over 30 years.
‘That man’s head must have a few screws loose.’ Mamoru says in an exasperated tone.
‘So what did you say Vivian?’ Ota asks.
‘Well, I tried to tell him that I wouldn’t be a good match for his family but he wouldn’t listen to us. His son is going to be staying in the hotel and I have to attend to him.’ She says, clutching her tablet to her chest.
‘Eisuke, what is he planning?’ Soryu is right to be suspicious. Even I believe that there is something amiss here.
‘Soryu, Mamoru, find out everything you can about this man and the Lancer’s Group.’
‘Lancer’s Group?’
‘Mr Lance’s last name turned into-‘
‘A joke.’ Mamoru finishes her sentence. ‘What do you want to know?’
‘Criminal records, illegal activity, anything. Baba see if you can find something in their estates. I want to know what they have in their possession.’
‘Uh, okay Boss…’
‘Ota I want to know what the public think about the Lance family.’
‘Sure.’
I get up from the couch and head to the stairs leading to my penthouse suite.
‘Eisuke, what about the auctions tonight?’
‘The IVC and the auctions will continue as usual. Vivian, coffee.’ I say before turning around and ascending the stairs. I hear Vivian’s high heels against the floor as she rushes to me.
As soon as I get inside, I sit at my office desk and begin researching. If the Lancer Group is as influential as the Ichinomiya Group, they will have more than a few skeletons in their closets. The smell of coffee fills the room as she makes my daily beverage. For a second, I suddenly imagine Vivian making coffee for someone else. Mr Jason Taylor Lance. With his hands on her hips and his lips at her neck, attempting to distract her from leaving. It disgusts me that another man besides me would have Vivian by his side.
I feel myself get up from my chair and wander to Vivian quickly. She pours milk and three sugar cubes into the mug. Her waist feels small in my hands. The hair on her head smells like argan oil. Vivian is actually a small woman, her head is just below my shoulders with high heels on. Her long dark hair is straight with a braided crown around the back of her head. She wears a black suit and a purple blouse plus I notice the thin platinum band around her right ring finger that I gave her when we first met.
I hear her gasp at my touch and she turns around in my arms. Her eyes are wide open with her eyebrows raised.
‘Eisuke?’
Eisuke. She usually says my name when we’re alone. When she’s in work mode, she calls me Boss, like Baba unfortunately, but I still remember how casually she said it the first time.
‘Eisuke, you’ve been working for hours. Take a break for a few minutes, please? What will I do if you faint from exhaustion?’
My hands cup her chubby face. Her trembling fingers hold onto my hands. The only man I see reflecting in her eyes, is me.
I can’t imagine being without Vivian.
Wait. What am I thinking? Or rather what am I doing?!
I let go of her face and turn to leave the room. Her short arms suddenly wrap around my waist as she desperately holds on.
‘Eisuke, I don’t want to leave you.’ Her whisper is enough for me.
But why do I care so much for her? Have I become attached to this woman? This woman who Akira introduced to me? The same shy, bubbly personality who has stuck by my side for more years than I can count? No one has survived as my secretary or assistant ever but Vivian has held on.
What am I feeling inside? This warmth in my chest?
*
The next day, we prepare for Mr Lance’s son’s appearance at the hotel. Jason Taylor is a famous model and fashion designer who is also known for his… drunk antics.
‘Soryu, make sure your men keep an eye on Taylor and Vivian while they are together. If he dares to make a move on her, I want them to intercept immediately.’
Soryu, sitting in the chair opposite my desk, rubs his head and sighs with exasperation.
‘Eisuke, my men are mobsters, not bodyguards.’
‘Soryu.’
‘I know, I know. I care about her too you know, we all do. She’s the only woman willing to stick by you and your peculiarities.’
‘….’
‘My men will watch out for her and will keep me and you updated on their activities.’
‘Good. Have you found anything incriminating?’
‘There is something. Apparently, the Lance’s have a secret operation in Brazil. It might be money laundering.’
‘Hm, have your men take it. If it is money laundering, the evidence will move the scales in my favour.’ We share a knowing look when Baba’s loud voice booms outside the office door.
‘Boss! He’s here! Come on out!’ I sigh and stand up.
‘Looks like His Highness is in your territory.’
‘We’ll see how long he can stay on his pedestal.’
Vivian meets us in the penthouse lounge. I gave her the morning off to mentally prepare herself for the work that she will have to do. She wears a different outfit that she wears for work which makes me feel better inside.
‘Hey Vivian, why are you wearing that?’ Ota asks. She looks down at her suit then to me.
‘Because I’m still working.’
‘But he’s going to be your fiancé, shouldn’t you greet him looking a little sexier or something appealing?’
‘If you’re so desperate for a fiancée, why don’t you go greet him?’ I spit out at Ota who frowns at me.
‘Baba, Eisuke’s being mean!’
‘You kind of deserved it Ota.’ Baba says.
‘Damn I’m tired. Can we get going now?’ Mamoru yawns.
‘Slacker.’ I hear Soryu mutter under his breath.
‘What you say!?’
‘That’s enough. Vivian.’ I turn to leave and hear Vivian follow. The others grumble along to see who has made an enemy out of me.
*
Just as the elevator doors open, we hear loud noises and women screaming. In the centre of all attention is JT Lance, a known critic, womaniser, drunkard and an exceptional model and designer. He was already at the top when he was born, but we’ll see how far down to the bottom he falls when I’m done with him.
He seems to be signing autographs on paper and magazines and on women’s bodies as well. Arms, hands, necks, chest, he’ll put his name anywhere. A typical celebrity. He wears a golden chain similar to his father and an open shirt revealing his body.
The lobby quietens down as I step out.
‘Oh, it’s the King!’
‘The King?’
‘Eisuke Ichinomiya?!’
The staff try to handle the guests as much as they can while I stride over to the man receiving his room key.
‘Mr Jason Taylor? It’s a pleasure to meet you.’ I smile at him and shake his hand.
‘Eisuke Ichinomiya, the pleasure is all mine! My dad says good things about you.’
‘Does he now?’ I highly doubt that considering our last encounter.
‘It’s a bit too crowded here to talk. Please follow me to the VIP lounge.’
‘Lead the way.’
In the lounge, JT sits making small talk with Ota and Baba while a female staff member serves drinks. I see her blush as JT winks at her from his spot on the couch.
‘Do you have any tips on how to attract women?’
‘Baba has trouble keeping a woman’s attention for more than a second.’ Ota quips.
‘Haha, the first thing a woman sees in a man is his fashion sense. And yours… is a little less than average.’
‘What?!’
‘You look a tomato with a head, hands and feet. You need to look more manly and dignified.’ He waves his arms around, looking a buffoon. Baba frowns, lost in thoughts.
‘I assume you wear that red… thing daily. Red is a passionate colour and bold to be worn in broad day light. But too much passion turns women off quicker than a light switch. A man should wear blues or purples, like Ota and Eisuke or that scary looking man over there.’ He points to Soryu whose face doesn’t change or move in the slightest.
‘… Um, even that man over there in the grey suit is more manly than you.’ He indicates at Mamoru who smokes at the window.
‘Hmmm, so I need to change my suit? But I love this suit…’ Baba mumbles to himself helplessly as Ota falls over laughing.
I feel Vivian fidget beside me as she gleans the man attempting to take her away from me. JT changes his focus to Vivian.
‘So, this woman is the secretary my dad told me about? What is your name? You are  certainly a beautiful gem among the dirt. Have you tried modelling? I’m sure my designs would look stunning on you.’ His insult generates a glare but, like his father, he does not notice.
‘My name is Vivian Grier and I am certain that I am just an average looking woman, sir.’
‘Oh please, you would look divine! And call me JT, it would be plain weird if my future wife calls me so formally.’ I feel my eye twitch at his casual words.
‘She is not your wife yet.’
‘That will be her decision, will it not?’
The tension increases with each passing moment as we size each other up. But Vivian cuts it like a sword slashing in the air.
‘Um, JT why don’t I show you around the hotel? Then you can relax in your suite. I still have work to do unfortunately but we can have dinner tonight in the restaurant if you would like.’ Her suggestion does nothing to quell the fiery rage that is slowly growing inside me.
His smile sickens me to my core.
‘I would be delighted to have that. Ota why don’t you come as well, we can discuss some new designs I’ve created.’
‘Sure. Don’t worry, the old man beside me won’t be coming along.’
‘Hey!’ Baba shouts out as usual. The four of them leave but not before Vivian pats my shoulder and says,
‘I’ll back in the penthouse in a bit, try not to exhaust yourself too much before I arrive.' She smirks and winks at me before rushing to the others.
*
‘You’re going to do what!?’ The words I didn’t want to hear leave Vivian’s mouth so simply that I shout at her in front of the others in the lounge. She flinches but continues.
‘JT is going to check out of the hotel tomorrow, and I will go with him. I’m going to agree to the marriage and stay with his family at their mansion.’
I can only glare at her, trying to dispel the unshakable resolve in her eyes. But she doesn’t look away nor does she back down.
‘Why?’
‘You and I both know that there is something not quite right here. They’re hiding a corpse underneath all that fame and money and I’m going to find out what.’
‘…..’
‘I know you have been investigating. I’m sure you’ll find the evidence we need but do it before the wedding. I…. One day, I want it to be you and me at the alter Eisuke. Truly.’
My eyes widen. Is she confessing to me? Now?
‘Soryu? Can I take Ryosuke and Samejima with me? For protection and friends to accompany me?’
‘Of course, they will protect with their lives Vivian.’ He takes his phone out and leaves to prepare his puppy and shark.
Vivian turns to me.
‘Eisuke, if I find anything then I will send it to you. And I promise I’ll come back. Come back to you.’
Vivian stands in front of me as the strong woman I know she is. She’s doing what needs to be done.
‘Money laundering.’
‘Huh?’
‘We have evidence that the Lance family is money laundering. Find me something related to it or something else I can use.’ I say. We look at each other for a moment then she smiles at me.
‘Okay.’
‘Good luck Vivian. We’ll be here if you need us.’ Baba pats her shoulder.
‘Don’t get yourself killed.’ Ota says from the couch.
‘Kid, don’t go doing anything stupid now.’ Mamoru puffs on his cigarette.
‘Thank you guys. Don’t worry, I’ll be careful.’ She smiles and bows to us before turning around.
‘And Eisuke?’
‘What?’
‘On JT’s phone, I saw a message. It said… the body is ready to be disposed.’
‘A body?’
‘Mamoru get on this.’
‘Murder, huh?’
‘Well, he gives lousy advice on fashion anyway.’ Baba says.
‘He was right about your fashion sense though.’ Ota retorts.
‘Kid, send me that message as soon as you can.’
‘I’ll try.’ Vivian’s heels stride out of the lounge. Strong and confident, she leaves with my heart.
*
The engagement is called on TV. Mr Lance announces the engagement and we watch as Vivian and JT exchange rings.
‘Such a tacky ring.’ I mumble to myself.
‘Hey, what’s that silver ring on her other finger?’ Ota points to the monitor.
‘Boss, didn’t you give that to her a few years ago?’
‘Obviously. I have more class than he does in style.’ I smirk. So even on TV, she continues to belong to me.
‘Eisuke, Inui and Samejima have dropped Vivian off at the hotel. She’ll be here in a few minutes.’
‘Good.’ My fingers hover over the pager’s call button. It has been confirmed that the wedding will take place tomorrow. JT has booked the ballroom for a party and invited me to attend.
‘So they recorded this and sent it to the media everywhere huh?’ Ota asks.
‘Yes. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 2 weeks since Vivian left us.’
‘She hasn’t left us. As if Eisuke would let the kid go, not with her skills.’ Mamoru, who for once is not asleep, teases me.
‘You’re not snoozing, has the station finally fired you?’ Soryu retorts.
‘Stop it. You all are too noisy.’ I order before Mamoru can fight back.
‘How are the preparations for JT’s party tonight?’
‘Going as well as I can hope. I’ve called the media here to capture JT’s antics on screen.’
‘Seriously? Does he know?’
‘Even if he does he’s not shy to the camera. Everyone knows his drunk habits. I’ve ordered for security to be ready to take action against him if he tries something.’
‘Ota, Mamoru and I will be there as well so you can count on us Boss!’ Baba says with as much enthusiasm as a balloon.
‘Why do I have to be there?!’
‘Because the alcohol is for free. I won’t have to buy you any tonight.’
‘Fine. I guess I’ll go.’ Mamoru grumbles to himself by the window.
‘Hook, line, and sinker. Point 1 to Baba.’ He tips his ridiculous hat and winks at Mamoru who pretends to gag on his cigarette.
‘Sir?’ Kenzaki enters the lounge with the woman I’ve been expecting to see since she left.
‘Miss Vivian has returned.’ His smile tells me that he has been missing Vivian as much as the rest of us.
‘Hey everyo-‘
‘VIVIAN!’
‘THANK GOD!’
‘GET US COFFEE PLEASE!’
Vivian jumps behind Kenzaki as the three men throw themselves at her. It is true that we’ve been miserable without her coffee. We have been living off of room service and Soryu’s tea.
‘I can’t believe you guys really missed me that much. I was gone for 2 weeks!’ She hands out the mugs and I sniff the coffee. It smells wonderful and for once, everyone is quiet in the lounge.
‘Would you like some Mr Kenzaki?’ Vivian asks.
‘No thank you, you can make me some another time. I have some work to do so I will leave you to it.’ He strokes her head like a father and leaves.
‘Vivian, upstairs.’ Still holding my mug and picking up Vivian’s bag, I climb the stairs with her in tow.
We sit beside each other when she looks up and smiles before taking out her tablet.
‘Even though I’ve been away, I’m still your secretary Eisuke. I’ve responded to all your emails and contacted everyone involved with the project. Mr Lance is going to sign the contract tomorrow after the wedding and-‘
‘Are you okay?’ I ask.
‘Hm, what?’
‘Did he do anything to you?’
‘No, not really. Despite the engagement, he hasn’t touched me. I thought he was seeing other women since he keeps going in and out of the mansion but I think it’s something else.’
‘Yes, the coordinates Soryu’s puppy sent is an office. It’s filled with counterfeit money.’ Vivian, Inui and Samejima were able to gain the site of Mr Lance’s operations from JT’s car’s automatic navigation system. The Ice Dragons stormed the place with Soryu and found over $200 million in cash.
‘What do you think it’s for?’
‘It could for a number of things Vivian. People have a way of finding things to buy when they millions to spare. Be it an object or a person.’
‘Did Mamoru find out about… the body?’
‘We’re still looking into it, but I have a hunch.’
‘Which is?’
‘You’ll see.’
‘No fair!’ Vivian pouts at me and I pinch her cheeks.
‘Oww!’ She says it in a more playful tone, letting me know that she’s happy.
‘You’ve gotten thinner since you left.’
‘I guess I was lonely without you Eisuke.’ She takes my hands and wraps my arms around her.
‘I missed you, so much.’ She hugs me tight, listening to my rapid heartbeat.
‘How have you been Eisuke?’
‘Fine. It’s not as if I need you by my side all the time.’ Who am I kidding? Her giggles tell me that she doesn’t believe my lies either.
‘But you will always miss my coffee right?’ Her teasing words make me chuckle.
‘Your coffee has done wonders for me. Even if you didn’t stay as my secretary, I would have made you the penthouse maid.’
‘Haha, I’m sure you would have.’ She raises her head and looks up at me through her long lashes. When did she become so beautiful?
‘Eisuke…’ When did her voice become so enticing when she says my name? And what would she sound like at night, beneath me with her head thrown back in pure bliss?
But before my lips can touch her skin…
‘Boss! Are you ready?’
‘Damn it, that thief always has awful timing.’ I grumble as we untangle our limbs from each other.
‘Don’t worry Eisuke. I’ll still be here when you get back.’ She takes my face into her hands and leaves a kiss on my forehead.
‘You know I will always be here.’ We lean our heads against each other, savouring the feelings that we hold dear. I’ve never felt love for a woman before. It’s not a bad feeling though.
*   (VIVIAN’S POV)
I change into my casual clothing and go downstairs to find not only Soryu with Ryosuke and Samejima, but also Luke in the lounge. The TV has been set up for us to watch the party on mute.
‘Hey you guys.’ I sit on the couch next to Luke and see Eisuke, Ota, Baba, and Mamoru at the party, mostly drinking at the bar.
‘Hey princess.’ Ryosuke waves. Samejima and Soryu both give me a nod.
‘Hello Sexy Bones.’ I smile at Luke.
‘Why aren’t you down there Soryu?’ I ask.
‘Too many women.’
‘Oh I see.’ Soryu hates women with a passion. Eisuke was surprised when Soryu said he didn’t mind me being here. Apparently, I’m not the type of women he hates.
‘Where’s JT?’ I ask, trying to spot him on the monitors.
‘Over there, speaking to one of the politicians.’ Luke points to the far corner. For a while we wait and see what happens. Eisuke speaks to various celebrities, all with that sly smile on his face, while Mamoru drinks at the bar. Baba and Ota flirt with the other women at the party.
It all seems pretty calm when I see JT suddenly throw a glass of champagne at a wall.
‘Uh oh.’
‘What the!?’
‘He’s drunk.’ Luke observes.
JT seems to shouting at a staff member. One whom I know as my friend, Sakiko.
‘He’s going to hit her!’ I shout. JT’s large fist is balled up in the air, ready to hit its target when Eisuke grabs his arm and pins it back. He forces JT to the ground and Mamoru cuffs his wrists.
‘Oh thank god!’ I sigh with relief as Sakiko is attended to by the other staff members. Eisuke seems to be addressing the guests as Mamoru and security push JT off the premises.
‘The media will love this.’ I say.
‘Eisuke knew this would happen, that’s why he called them in the first place.’ Soryu says, turning his attention to clean his gun.
‘Mr Ichinomiya looked so cool! Just like you sir!’ Ryosuke says, looking at Soryu with admiration.
‘Indeed, Eisuke’s collarbones looked splendid.’ Luke smiles and Ryosuke gives me a look of bewilderment. I laugh despite the situation we just witnessed.
‘Eisuke did look really cool out there.’
‘Maybe you should make him the new Ice Dragon’s leader.’ Luke says.
‘No.’ Both Luke and I burst out laughing with Samejima trying to hide his smile and Ryosuke looking even more bewildered.
When Eisuke came back to the penthouse, I said good night to the others and followed him upstairs to his bedroom. I hugged him tightly as soon as we entered him room.
‘I saw on the monitors. Thank you for saving Sakiko.’ I nuzzle my face into his chest.
‘Hm.’ I feel the slight vibration course through his body.
‘Eisuke?’
‘What?’
‘Seeing JT be so… violent… made me think. Do you think sacrificing my freedom, despite knowing his flaws, despite knowing that there is always the possibility that he could become violent with me, that he could hurt me and cause me pain and trauma that I might never recover from, if marriage is about accepting the faults of the partner you love, should I accept his flaws no matter how abusive he could be?’
‘No. Because even the slightest possibility could destroy more than just your body, but your heart too. People like JT are not worth more than the dirt under our shoes.’
Suddenly, Eisuke dips down and hooks his arm under my knees.
‘Ah! Eisuke!’ Wrapping my arms tightly around his neck, Eisuke throws me onto the bed and leans over me.
‘You’re still here though.’
‘I am.’
‘Are you going to leave?’ I look into his chocolate brown eyes. I can see my reflection in them so clearly. I feel my love for him bubbling up inside me.
‘Only if you force me to.’
‘Pfft, as if that would ever happen.’ His kiss is sweeter than any candy. It melts me at my core completely. That night, our hearts finally connect with one another. The moment that I have always wanted has been fulfilled. And before I pass out, I hear,
‘I promise, tomorrow, you will walk out as my woman. I will save you.’
*
Standing at the church doors, I breath in and out. Clutching a bouquet of hydrangeas, I think about last night. Eisuke promised that he would save me.
‘Go to the wedding tomorrow. I will be there and stop this madness.’
Akira comes up and turns me to face him.
‘Do not worry Vivian. Eisuke will give you a wedding surprise you won’t soon forget.’ His smile warms my heart. I asked him to come from London to walk me down the aisle. With my parents gone since I was a child, Akira is the closest thing I have to a father.
‘I know he will. I just hope he hurries up.’ I say. Akira holds out his elbow and my left hand gently clutches his suit. We hear the music begin and the large doors creak open.
With thousands of eyes on me, I look straight ahead just as Eisuke would. Ignore all the stares and look straight forward always no matter what. Cameras and flashes and whispers fill the room as I see JT smirk my way. The wedding dress wasn’t my choice. It was designed by JT and Ota together but it still isn’t the dress I imagined I would wear to my wedding. It’s a backless, pearl white lace dress with a ring of diamonds at my waist. My hair is in a loose bun and a thin hair band with small flowers rests atop my head. The dress trails at the back slightly and I feel it drag the fake flowers those sitting on the benches throw at us. In the corner of my eye, I see the bidders who wave at me. I smile inwardly, knowing that I’m in safe hands.
We finally make it to the priest and JT presses a light kiss to my hand. I gag inside as Akira leaves me to sit down.
The priest begins to speak the formalities and my mind drifts away. Eisuke said he would save me. So where is he? I’ve hoped for years that Eisuke would love me the way that I love him and now that I finally have it, we’ve become entangled in this mess.
‘If there is anyone who would object to this couple’s union, speak now or forever hold your peace.’
The doors behind us creak open once more. Everyone turns to see the silhouette of the man I love the most in this world.
‘I object.’
Eisuke walks forward as gasps and whispers fill the room. All cameras pointed at the King of Spades.
‘JT Lance has no business marrying her.’ He nods to the priest who takes out a remote and presses a button. A projector rises near the back of the church and a picture of a woman appears.
‘Oh that’s Miss Freya Opaline.’ Opaline was a great gem collector who mysteriously died when she tripped and fell into glass which pierced her heart.
‘Miss Opaline was not killed by what we believed was an accident.’ Eisuke’s strong voice echoes in the church.
‘JT and Opaline were both after the same set of gems that were unearthed in Egypt. Opaline got to them first so JT attempted to bribe her for them. When that didn’t work, he killed her and took the gems for himself.’ Moans and groans of the shocked public begin to rise.
‘The next few slides have secret messages between Mr Jason Taylor Lance and his associates who covered up the murder. Let’s also not forget about Mr Lance, who has been making counterfeit money for nearly a decade.’
‘Damn it.’ I hear JT whisper in defeat.
‘If there is anybody else who would like to object…’ As if on cue, Baba and Ota shout out.
‘I object!’ Everyone follows suit and I back away. Suddenly, Mamoru and the police walk in, arresting JT and Mr Lance. Before JT is taken away, I waltz up to him where he is handcuffed. I smile and throw the bouquet at his feet. The sound a slap resonates inside the building, rendering everyone silent. JT stares dumbfounded. Suddenly, I hear cheers for my performance and the police take JT away.
Eisuke comes up to me and I kiss him. I hear many screams and see white flashes behind my closed eyelids but I don’t care. He did it all and I helped him.
‘I love you Eisuke.’
‘I love you Vivian.’ He smiles genuinely and I fall in love again. We lean our foreheads together, knowing our love for each other is true.
*
‘It was nice of Mrs Lance to sign the contract on behalf of her ex-husband.’ I say.
‘Yes. Now that Miss Felicia is taking over, their business might finally have a chance of being good.’
‘But not as good as the Ichinomiya Group. Right?’ I laugh.
‘Obviously.’ Eisuke smirks at me when we hear a crack.
‘Okay, I think I got it.’ Ota says. The large statue of Venus stands before us once again… in pieces.
‘I guess you finally did something right for once Baba.’ Mamoru says.
‘Yeah! Wait what?!’
‘We were lucky that this was the statue that Miss Felicia was talking about. Who would have thought that Opaline and Felicia were such good childhood friends that Opaline gave the gems to her?’
The gems were never with Opaline to begin with. She sent them to JT’s mother as a way to rekindle their love for each other. Unfortunately, JT killed Opaline before she and Felicia could run away and start life anew. After her death, Felicia hid the gems inside the statue made by an amateur to prevent anyone from taking them.
‘The gems were the beginning of so much sorrow. Whatever stories there are, those gems hold nothing but pain.’
‘It’s a tragic love story but I think Felicia will be happy knowing that she has her own business to run and that her lover’s murderers are in prison.’
‘What I can’t believe is that Mr Lance wanted Vivian in order to blackmail you into selling the counterfeit money at the auctions.’
‘A stupid idea by a coward.’
‘Guys, I think I found it.’ Ota pulls out a golden box from the statue’s chest.
‘Is that it?’
‘Must be.’
‘Open it Eisuke!’
He takes the box and uses the key Felicia gave Eisuke. Inside is one gem, not multiple like the stories. A large diamond the size of a fist sparkles in the light.
‘Now this, will fetch a very good price.’ Eisuke smirks.
*
‘$20 million! $50 million! $100 million! Do I have any more bids?’
‘It’s going up.’
‘Of course it is.’
‘$150 million! $200 million!’
‘Wow.’
‘Honestly, these people are far too desperate for something good to happen to ‘em. As if a diamond can bring good fortune.’ Mamoru says.
‘$300 million! Any more!’
The diamond sits on a pedestal on top of a purple velvet cushion. I hug Eisuke’s arm and snuggle into his side as I feel him kiss the top of my head.
‘$500 million! Sold!’

I genuinely wanna know what's all your ocs reaction to being cheated on?
Sat on this for a minute, but you know, why not? Could use a bit of good angst on this blog lmao it was getting a little too soft around here
You said all, so I’m gonna do them all (the important ones adhkdkhj not all 50+), but in groups, because they kind of all fall into different circles of responses
My OCs reactions to being cheated on
Group 1 — Alec, Jamil, Miriam, Viviane
These four, when they fall for someone—like really in love—they fall hard and fast, so they hurt the most when their partner cheats on them
They all will internalize it, and see it as their fault, somehow
Miriam bounces back the quickest, but that’s only because she’s the best at pretending, it’ll be eating her up for months afterwards even if you would never be able to tell
She can’t go out of her way to avoid you, but if you pass each other in the halls of the palace, she will very pointedly ignore you, especially when around others
Viviane will be sad for a week or so, but then she gets over it because she is able to detach and go “well, it clearly wasn't meant to be” and dust herself off
She will try to avoid you as much as possible, and be prepared for Ignatius to make your life hell, whether she told him or not he will find out and he will make sure you regret it
Jamil is out of it for a while, he seems to retreat into himself, quieter than normal, less likely to eat, less likely to smile, even—but he’ll cry about it for a few days and then pick himself back up, he’s grown, and it hurts but he’ll be okay
Of the four, he can be the most cordial around you, he won’t purposefully avoid or ignore you, especially in public areas, but there will not be any chance of a relationship or friendship even, ever again
Also, he may be civil and nice, but the rest of the band Will Not
But Alec? She doesn’t recover for the longest time—she will hide herself in her room, not eat, not talk to anyone for days, weeks even
The thought of her love not being enough, of her not being enough for you kills her, and she will wallow and waste away if drastic measures aren’t taken by her friends—like an impromptu trip far, far away from Vesuvia
Can’t be anywhere near you, can’t see you, can’t handle any mention of you for a very long time without bursting into tears
This is the quickest way to become one of the most infamous people in Vesuvia, because now the band hates you, and if they hate you, people are going to know that
Group 2 — Camia, Meredith, Jacqui
Outwardly, they seem unbothered, but a chill settles in the air around them, and they will cut you off in a heartbeat
They are the best at burning bridges, and they have no qualms about it
Of the three, Meredith will be the angriest, and might be a bit violent and threatening, but once she gets it out of her system she will let it go and work to forget you exist
If she gets wind of any nasty rumors though, she’ll lose it and track you down
Not saying you can’t travel the Salty Seas anymore, but you might want to be as inconspicuous as possible, she is just the right amount of petty to raid any ship you're on, just because she can
Camia doesn’t get angry, she is just Disappointed. In you, in herself, and she adds another layer to the walls surrounding her mind and her heart
She gets very quiet for a while, and may or may not tell the rest of the band, but if she does, they are angry on her behalf
She won’t go out of her way to avoid you, but will not engage any kind of conversation, and even if she doesn’t say anything, the city Will Know because the band knows
Jacqui is pretty in between, he’s angry, but not violent, just kind of retreats into himself for a minute, but it just makes him stronger, gives him another layer of scars that harden and twist over his heart
If he tells Rodrigo, he’ll be furious for him and he will be the one to spread nasty rumors, but Jacqui wouldn’t do anything himself
Will not engage, will not acknowledge your existence if you cross paths again
They all wonder, at least for a little bit, if it was their fault, but they probably won’t cry over it
Group 3 — Leon, Rodrigo
These two can and will ruin the life of whoever cheated on them
They are all vengeance and fire and angry tears and screaming
Not for a moment do they blame themselves, and they need to get their revenge before they can try to process all of the complex emotions that come from it
Leon’s revenge is a bit more detached, he prefers to just let the rumor mill run its course, but will resort to violence perhaps frighteningly fast, especially if someone tries to blame him, or spreads false rumors about him/the relationship
You better not come within a mile radius of them though, Leon will know and they will confront you in public, wherever you are
Rodrigo’s revenge is much more violent—he will hunt you down and threaten you at the very least, actually attempt to kill you at worst, and Jacqui can’t be relied on to stop him, because he will not hold him back
Just, for your safety, never sail the Sea of Persephia again, because he will find you and kill you, and everyone on the same boat as you
However, for both of them, after they’ve had their revenge, they will reach a point where they Break Down, and there is no consoling them during this period—they just need to cry and scream until they don’t have a voice anymore, and for both of them, this usually also means going off the walls with their magic/whatever weapons they have around them
Group 4 — Saoirse, Sydney
Does not care, and you can’t make them care
It’s not even a relationship breaker for either of them, tbh
They are devoid, flat—probably shrug when they find out and go “So?”
Saoirse will be more irked, because they don’t get into relationships in the first place, so they’re more annoyed that you ruined their efforts, but again, they don’t really care
They’ve been around humans long enough to shrug things like that off—it’s in human nature, so they think, and would be fine keeping up any kind of relationship afterwards
Sydney will probably just laugh, and if you want to leave he’ll gesture to the door, or the plank, or whatever’s nearest, and wave goodbye
But if he hears any kind of negative talk about him, or if you start spreading lies or anything, he will find you and it will not end well

The Ranch {18}
An A Court of Thorns and Roses, Nesta x Cassian, Modern AU, fanfiction.
Collaboration: @snelbz x @tacmc
Summary: Nesta had spent years in Paris, living her dream and drowning in riches as a gourmet chef, capturing the hearts of the city and its people. But, after her father passes away unexpectedly and leaves his cozy, countryside B&B to his oldest daughter, Nesta is moving back home to the tiny town of Velaris, where the ranch, her sisters, and her father’s unfulfilled dream, awaits.
Sidenote: Being posted between two blogs, it is too chaotic to keep up with a tags list, so all chapters will be tagged with “#TheRanchNessian” & “#SharaCollab”.
The Ranch Masterlist
Tumblr media
Nesta was overwhelmed by all the love, and the shower hadn’t even started yet. Elain had put her planning skills to use, once again. The B&B’s living room was covered in streamers and banners and delicate pink and gold decor. A table was set up, full of snacks and desserts, and Cassian and the other men had been ordered to stay away.
Which meant that they were out back, drinking.
Every time Nesta asked if she could do something to help or even tried to get out of her seat, she was ordered to sit back down, put her feet up and relax.
She was doing just that when Viviane and Mor flopped down on the couch to her left.
“So,” Mor asked, sipping her mimosa through a pink-and-white striped straw. “Do we have any names picked out yet?”
Nesta looked at the mimosa longingly, but she blinked, coming back to the conversation and smiled. “We have a few, but we haven’t decided yet.” She rubbed her hand over her belly, gazing fondly at it, at the perfect, little girl growing inside her.
“And?” Viv asked, just as sweet as she was the day Nesta had met her. “What are they?”
She blushed, thinking of what Cassian had told her while they’d laid in bed last night.
Everyone is going to want to see and know every little thing about her as soon as she’s here, he’d said, his finger drawing long lines up and down her spine. Let’s keep them to ourselves for now.
“It’s a secret,” Nesta said, and when Mor groaned at the given answer, Nesta only smiled.
“She won’t even tell us, so don’t feel too bed,” Feyre said, sitting on Nesta’s other side. “Your fiancé is drunk by the way.”
“Already?” Nesta asked, gazing out the back window with narrowed eyes. He was laying in the green, lush grass in the back yard with a bottle to his lips while Rhysand and Azriel threw a football over him, back and forth.
Feyre chuckled and held up a mini cupcake. “Here, snuck one when Elain wasn’t looking.”
“I’ve never loved you so much,” Nesta muttered, popping the cupcake into her mouth in one bite. They were ordered to keep hands off the food until all guests arrived.
Nesta glanced up at the grand clock as she chewed.
They still had twenty more minutes before it truly began.
Elain had invited anyone Nesta had ever been close to and she was surprised when she’d told her there had been over thirty confirmed yes RSVP’s. And as the pile of gifts in the corner, Nesta’s heart became more and more full.
The back door opened and they heard, “Uh, Nes… can you come here for a second?”
Nesta and Elain’s eyes locked as her boyfriend’s tense voice floated to them. All three sisters made their way out into the backyard. Azriel was the only one there, although the football had been left behind, as well as Rhys and Cassian’s shirts.
Feyre began, “Where are-.”
“On the way down do the roping pen,” Azriel interrupted. “Because the two of them started talking about the old days and they’re drunk and now they're going to try and rope the herd.”
“We left you out here to stop them from making stupid decisions,” Feyre groaned.
He threw his hands in the air. “There’s two of them, one of me, and they’re both drinking. And then they took their shirts off and at that point, it was out of my hands.”
“One of them is going to get hurt.” Nesta began to rub small circles into her belly. She’d begun to do so when she was stressed out, trying to make sure her sweet girl knew everything was okay. She knew when she was freaking out, she flooded her with the hormones as well.
Elain smiled sweetly, kissed Azriel’s cheek and said, “I’ll handle it, you two go back inside.” She hurried her sisters back inside and they watched from the window as she began walking in the direction of the round pen.
Nesta said, “What is she-?”
“Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to,” Azriel mumbled, grabbing a handful of trail mix, overloaded with pink and white m&m’s. “She’s persuasive when she wants to be and terrifying when she needs to be.”
Feyre blinked. “You may want to keep that in mind while you eat the food she ordered no one to touch.”
Azriel hesitated before popping the handful into his mouth. “If you say anything,” he began, mouth full, “I will destroy you.”
Nesta snorted as Azriel walked to the front porch and sat in a rocking chair while guests continued to arrive. WIth a shake of her head, Nesta was looking back out of the back window, where Elain had disappeared to. A moment later, she returned with her chin held high, Cassian and Rhysand trailing behind, looking like two children that were being dragged to timeout.
Nesta was pulled into conversation after conversation after that. They pretty much were all the same.
Yes, they were so excited for her to be here.
No, they weren’t announcing her name yet.
Yes, she'd be having an epidural.
“Some people have no boundaries,” Viviane muttered, saving Nesta from a conversation where she’d been asked if she and Cassian still had an “aggressive sex life”.
Nesta was still laughing from the look on the woman’s face when she informed her she’d have to wait to find out if he’d gotten her throat pregnant the night before.
“You know she goes to the local church, right?” Feyre asked, nibbling on the brownies Nesta had baked when she couldn’t sleep this morning.
Nesta shrugged. “Then she shouldn’t have been asking such intrusive questions.”
An hour passed and guests were beginning to leave. Nesta found herself exhausted as she fell back into the couch with a plate of mini cupcakes. The back door swung open and Cassian stumbled inside, still shirtless, grinning at an older woman with a wink - the same woman that Nesta appalled with her sex life details. She looked him over, once, shook her head and walked away.
“Hi, baby mama,” Cassian said, a slight slur to his words as he leaned over the back of the couch and put his sweaty arms around her.
“Hi,” she said, taking a bite of her cupcake. “You stink.”
He muttered a reply as he pressed his lips to the side of her neck. “Did we get a lot of cute shit?”
Nesta pointed to the long table on the other side of the room, where the opened gifts sat - diapers, clothes, headbands, shoes, socks, bibs, blankets, and the list went on and on and on. She had received both things that were necessary and things that were not, and although she was incredibly grateful, she had no idea where the hell it would all go.
Cassian whistled as he observed the gifts. “That’s a lot of cute shit.”
“Yeah,” Nesta said, quietly, picking up another cupcake.
Cassian blinked, then frowned as he looked at Nesta and caught her expression. “What’s wrong?”
Her lip began to wobble.
“What? No, no no,” he began, coming around the couch and kneeling before her, He took the plate off her lap and took her hands in his. “Don’t cry. Why are you crying? It’s a happy day.”
“Where are we going to put all of this stuff, Cass?” she asked, quietly. “We have enough shit to fill two nurseries, and we don’t even have one.”
The look on his face told her that she wasn’t the only one who’d been thinking about that. They had discussed building a new home, like Cassian had wanted, but knew that ultimately, they’d always end up back in the ranch house, so it would be a colossal waste of both time and money. They’d discussed adding onto the cabin or her little house by the river, but again, they knew where they’d end up.
Cassian had found her standing in the doorway of her old bedroom when it was unoccupied by guests, on more than one occasion. He knew what the best resolution was for both of them, but knew neither of them wanted to admit it.
He cupped her face in his hands, using his thumbs to brush away the few tears that had slipped over. “I think we need to sit down and have a talk with your sisters soon.”
She nodded, the tears starting a new, knowing exactly what conversation he meant.
He sat next to her on the couch and wrapped an arm around her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “It’s okay, sweetheart.”
She sniffled again and said, “Seriously, you stink.” He chuckled, but didn’t have a chance to reply before Elain’s frantic voice filled the nearly empty house.
“Why is she crying?” She asked, coming into the living room, eyes narrowing on Cassian. “What did you do?”
He shrugged. “Knocked her up?”
Rhys shoved a mini cupcake in his mouth and said, “Well, you’re not wrong.”
Feyre nudged him in the side with her elbow and Nesta chuckled, wiping at her eyes. “I’m fine.”
Elain’s eyes narrowed further. “You’re lying.”
Yes, she was, but she wasn’t about to have this conversation while there were still guests in the house. To save her from lying, once more, Cassian sighed, loudly and dramatically. “Well, if you’re all staying around for a while, I guess I should run into town and get more shit for dinner. I’m drunk, so one of you has to drive me.”
“Might wanna put a shirt on first,” Elain muttered, still uneasy.
“I’ll drive you,” Azriel said, but Cass shook his head.
“I think Feyre needs to come with me.”
Rhys had popped another cupcake into his mouth, so he mumbled, “What? Why?”
“Hush, and stop talking with your mouth open.” Feyre leaned down and kissed his cheek. “That’s fine, Cass. But you’re changing first, you really do stink. Let’s stop at the cabin.”
He so badly wanted to protest, but didn’t. Instead, he followed Feyre down to his cabin, who was eyeing him suspiciously for the entire walk.
“At what point during this outing are you going to tell me why it had to be me to accompany you?” Feyre asked, when they reached the cabin’s porch.
“Can I not simply enjoy your company?” Cassian asked, one brow arched.
“You can, but I also know you better than that,” Feyre said, amused.
He chuckled. “That’s fair. I’ll tell you when we leave. I just...need a second perspective on some things.”
Her expression didn’t ease as she looked at him though, it got more worried.
Cassian hustled up the stairs and went in to quickly wash down and change, while Feyre stayed out on the porch. It was brisk outside, the middle of October and the crisp fall day was beautiful.
Feyre leaned against the porch rail, looking out into the woods behind the cabin. She’d grown up, running through these woods, and she loved everything about it. She had painted every scene you could see on this land. When she was-.
Something caught her eye, and Feyre stared into the wooded area, trying to discern exactly what she was seeing. Or who.
The door of the cabin opened and Cass said, “Alright, much better. Want to smell?”
He lifted up his arm and Feyre rolled her eyes, pushing him away. “Shut up, let’s go.”
She decided that what she’d seen in the woods was just a shadow of a tree, as the sun was beginning to go down, and not a figure in the distance.
Cassian and Feyre walked to the truck where he, like the gentleman he was, opened the passenger door for Feyre before helping himself behind the wheel.
“So?” She said, as he pulled onto the road.
Cassian hesitated, then went with, “I want to give your sister the world.”
Feyre blinked. “I know. You are, surprisingly, very sweet to her. Go on.”
Cassian rolled his eyes but continued, “We don’t have enough room, Feyre, for a baby. Even then, it’s too much, you know? A ranch, a B&B, a newborn? Fuck, one of those is enough, but juggling all three?”
Feyre watched him, then turned her eyes toward the road as she said, “I know you, Cass, so stop dancing around the subject and spit it out.”
“Nesta doesn’t want to reopen the bed and breakfast when she’s done with maternity leave.”
The words hung between them. Feyre didn’t say anything, which almost terrified Cass more.
They pulled into the parking lot of the diner and he put it in park, turning to look at her. “Say something, anything, please.”
She gnawed on her lip. “I’m trying to decide what to say.”
“Are you mad or are you surprised?” He asked.
“I’m...in shock,” she said.
He nodded, slowly. “Why?”
Feyre laughed, breathlessly. “At first, I was surprised that she wanted to open the B&B to begin with. Then, she put so much work into it, put her whole heart into it...it hasn’t even been a year, and y’all want to close it?”
Cassian sighed. “It’s not that we want to, but it’s more of a necessity. Nesta has been scared to close it down...but, I think it’s for the best. We need the main house, and we make enough money on the ranch without it. We have no room for the baby, Feyre, no time. And...I don’t know. Raising the baby in the main house? She’ll have her own room, Nesta will have her own kitchen….It makes more sense. Right?” He added the question at the end, hoping for Feyre’s approval, but unsure of what she’d say.
She didn’t say anything, she just sat there, tapping her foot.
“I’m gonna go get the food, I’ll be right back, just…” Cassian sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I just want to do what’s best for my family.”
He got out of the truck and headed inside and Feyre was…floored.
After Nesta had sacrificed so much, after she’d given up everything she’d ever known, she was already willing to quit. She had sold her restaurants, her life’s work, all to come back to Velaris and reopen the B&B. And just like that, she was done?
The more Feyre thought it over, the more angry she was getting and by the time Cassian was carrying the food to the truck, Feyre wasn’t even sure what she wanted to speak to him.
The drive back home was silent, she stared out the window, and Feyre was trying to calm her breathing before they returned home. She’d slapped Nesta on her first day here. She was pregnant, but if she was going to destroy their father’s dream-.
Feyre closed her eyes and sighed.
Their father’s dream.
Not Nesta’s.
Nesta’s dreams were back in Paris, London, Rome. And she’d left them.
To come back home.
She leaned her head back, letting it fall against the headrest, and a single tear rolled down her cheek.
Cassian noticed it, too. They were close to pulling into the driveway, but not quite. Cassian finally broke the silence by saying, “You know it breaks my heart, don’t you? I know how much work Nesta has put into this, Feyre, and your dad was a good friend.” He had been, Feyre knew. Cassian was one of her father’s favorite people in the end. “I wanted him to succeed. I wanted them both to succeed, and this decision isn’t easy, but we’re having a baby, Feyre. A fucking kid. It’s not just about me, and it’s not just about Nes...it’s not about either of us, it’s all about this baby, and I…”
His words trailed off, and he was still staring at the road as he ran his hand down his face in frustration. Feyre pretended not to notice how his eyes welled up with tears.
“I’m so fucking scared, Feyre. That I’ll fuck up somehow.” His voice broke. “I didn’t have a father, I don’t know how to be a father. I’ll mess this kid up or I’ll do something and she’ll get sick of me.”
There was Tomas again, always in the back of his mind. Even if they hadn’t seen him in weeks, he still haunted nearly every thought.
“If Nesta wants to give up the B&B, I’m going to support her in that.” His jaw was set and Feyre knew it wasn’t for a fight. “I just… I have to do what’s best for my family.”
She noticed the change from his earlier statement, saw the determination and devotion in his eyes. Feyre never been so thankful that her big sister had found someone so absolutely devoted to her than she was in that moment.
After a deep breath, Feyre reached across the center console and took her friend’s hand in hers. “We will support you, too, in whatever you decide to do, whatever you feel you need to do. And you’re going to be a good husband, and a good father. I know it.”
Cassian didn’t look in her direction and he took his hand off the wheel for a split second to wipe at his face as he nodded, shortly.
“Nesta’s stressed,” he said, at last. “I don’t know how to help her. Nesta was a pain in the ass to begin with, but pregnant Nesta? I feel helpless.”
Feyre chuckled and patted his hand before wiping away her tears. “You’re doing better than you think you are, Cass. That woman loves you. I have never seen her love anyone, anything, the way she loves you.”
Cassian did though. He knew one thing that Nesta loved as much as him, as much as her sisters, as much as their unborn baby.
And he knew what they could do.
When they pulled up to the house, all cars except those belonging to their family were gone. As they made their way up the stairs, they could hear the laughter of their families inside.
“This,” he breathed, stopping.. “This is what I want to come home to after a long day. My family, laughing, living, just being together. Not- not strangers in my living room.”
Feyre’s eyes softened. “I know, Cass. I get it.”
He nodded, and took a deep breath before pushing open the front door and holding up the bags of food. “Let’s eat!”
He was met with a round of hollers, all but from Nesta, who was watching him, wistfully. She knew him too well. Knew that something had happened, something had been talked about in their absence.
He gave her a gentle smile before making his way to the kitchen and unloading the to-go boxes for everyone to choose from.
He set out plates and napkins, and everyone came through and loaded up their plates, Nesta being last.
She met Cassian’s stare and said, “You talked to her about it, didn’t you?”
“I-.” He looked to the living room where Feyre was laughing at something Azriel had said. “How did you know?”
Nesta rolled her eyes. “What did she say?”
He was quiet for a minute and while he made plates for them, and as he opened his mouth to say something, Rhys hollered, “You guys know you can’t make another baby until Nesta pops that one out, right?”
Cass chuckled and kissed Nesta’s forehead. “Come on. We’ll talk later. Let’s go spend time with our family.”
A few hours later, the six of them ended up around a bonfire, and Cassian cleared his throat. “There’s something Nes and I want to talk to you guys about.”
Feyre didn’t look surprised. She simply folded her hands in her lap and waited, along with the others. Nesta was staring at her hands.
Cassian took a long, slow drink from his bottle before meeting Nesta’s gaze. She nodded, slowly, and after a breath, Cassian said, “Nesta and I are going to discontinue the B&B.”
Elain, Azriel, and Rhysand stared at him, open-mouthed, but Feyre just nodded, slowly.
“And before anyone says anything, yes, we have thought about it,” Cassian continued. “We need room for the baby, and we need privacy… We realize the B&B was Isaac’s dream, and we’re glad we were able to make it successful, but as we’re starting a family...we just need to do this. So, we’re going to shut down the B&B and continue the ranch...and, Nesta’s going to open her own restaurant.”
The circle went silent.
Nesta, included.
In fact, she was the first to say, “What?”
He nodded. “It’s your passion, sweetheart. I get to do what I love every single day. I get to live my passion.” He took her face in his hands. “You left your passion behind in your restaurants, in your food. You can keep doing that though. You can do what you love.”
“Where?” She asked, tears already spilling over. “The house?”
“If you want, some nights,” he said. “Or we can find you a place. Or I’ll build you one, on the property, I don’t care.”
Nesta was floored. “I- Are you- Really?”
He almost looked taken about. “Of course, really.” He didn’t care that the others were around, that they were watching, listening. “You’re giving me a baby, Nes. A family. And I just want you to be happy, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that you’re happy.”
He wiped at the tears falling down her cheeks, knowing full well they were happy tears, not tears of sadness.
“Cass,” she breathed, shaking her head slowly.
“If we close the B&B, tell me what you want and I’ll make it happen,” he whispered. “Tell me what you want, and it’s yours.”
She nodded, unable to form the words needed to express to him her love, her gratitude, her thanks.
But he didn’t need any of those. He could see the truth in her eyes, the amazement and the devotion there. So he kissed her, knowing that they were on the right path to their future.
___
It was getting late. They had all piled into the little house outback once the bonfire began to fade away. Then, Rhysand and Feyre took off, leaving Elain and Azriel snuggling together on the couch. A movie had been playing, and the couple were soon sleeping soundly.
Nesta and Cassian crept into the bedroom,  Beau just behind.
Nesta crashed into the bed, her eyes dropping. It had been a long day and she was so over it.
“You look like you need a massage,” Cassian said, kicking off his boots and slipping his shirt over his head.
“A massage, a drink,” she muttered. “The list is long.”
“I can’t exactly condone the latter,” he said, laying down behind her, one hand covering her stomach, as it did every night, and pressing a kiss to the back of her neck. “But I can help with the former for sure.”
He let his other hand knit into her hair and scratched at her scalp. Nesta’s head lulled back, giving him better access to her neck and he kissed the delicate column of her throat before he whispered, “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she breathed.
“I’m drunk,” he muttered.
Nesta snorted. “You’ve been drunk since three.”
“Not true,” he said, trailing his kisses across her shoulder.
“So true,” she protested, but didn’t push him away, only closed her eyes as he slipped the strap of her tank top down her arm.
“You know, in a few months, I won’t be able to fuck you whenever I want.”
Nesta rolled her eyes and snorted. “How romantic. The father of my child, ladies and gentleman.”
But Cassian was grinning, his mouth against her skin. “I’m not wrong.”
“Hmmm.” She pretended to be unaffected by his advances, but Cassian turned her face towards him and kissed her. Nesta giggled and turned over, wrapping her arms around him.
“So what did I hear about our aggressive sex life today?” Cass asked, kissing her jaw.
Nesta laughed and said, “Remember the woman that you scandalized earlier?” Cassian blinked, clearly not recalling. “You were drunk, remember?”
“No, but I’ll take your word for it,” he mumbled, his attention redirected to more important things as his face planted between her breasts.
“Well, I basically told an elderly woman that I suck you dry, so..” Nesta trailed off.
Cassian snorted, propping himself up on his elbows. “You scandalized an old woman?”
“It makes me mad when people ask stupid things,” she said, shrugging.
Cassian blinked. “Is it weird that I’'m completely turned on right now?”
Nesta took his face into her hands. “When are you not turned on?”
Cassian grinned. “Fair point.”
He kissed her hard, his tongue sweeping along her bottom lip. She opened up, giving him access and moaned quietly as his tongue brushed against her own.
“Make love to me,” she breathed. “Make love to me in our home.”
Cass pulled back, gazing down at her.
Our home.
She watched as his eyes filled up with tears, but before one could fall, she pulled his lips back down to hers and kissed him, pouring everything she wanted to say into it.
He pulled himself over her but was careful for her belly. She kept telling him that a little bit of weight was okay, but he was overly protective of what that bump held.
A few more months, and they would go from being a couple to being a family of three. They would close the B&B and make the big house their home. They would raise their daughter within those walls.
And Cassian couldn’t wait.

Adam Watches the 92nd Academy Awards
Tumblr media
The 92nd Academy Awards have come and gone. As always, there’s plenty to be happy about and plenty that’ll make you wonder what the heck the voters were thinking. I watched the ceremony and while I may say that I don’t care… I do. Those awards are a big deal. Legions of people who would’ve otherwise dismissed Parasite as some movie that requires them to read subtitles saw it because it was nominated. One of those golden statues can make a career and let’s face it, you like to hear your love for something validated by people who have even the semblance of authority on the subject.
But here’s what you may not know: most of the voters really don’t know what they’re doing. While cinematographers NOMINATE what films are up for that Best Cinematography Award, EVERYONE in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gets to vote for the winner and there’s no guarantee they’ve actually seen every nominee, know what the technical terms mean or are voting because what they saw is what they actually believe was “the best”. Once you take into account the dollars required to produce a nomination campaign, the stigma many genre films face, the prejudices against certain types of roles and/or actors, and how popularity influences votes, a win hardly means more than a bunch of people you don’t know saying they liked a movie.
If you want a better idea of which of 2019’s films were “the best”, you’re better off asking someone you know and trust, someone who can prove they’ve done their homework and aren’t just voting for their friends, the one they’ve heard is good from their kid, or got a special gift basket from. I may not be a paid professional, but I have put in the time and effort to see EVERYTHING nominated (with a few exceptions I’ll detail below). Reviews for some of these (The Irishman, Judy) are coming to the blog in a couple of days. If it were up to me the list of nominees would be different but we’ll get to that later. Without further ado, here’s who SHOULD’VE won.
Best Visual Effects
1917 – Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler, and Dominic Tuohy The best special effects are the kind you don’t even notice. I couldn’t tell you where the explosions, sets, and actors in 1917 begin, and where the computer-generated imagery takes over. It’s seamless.
Best Film Editing
Parasite – Yang Jin-mo Got to hand it to Parasite for its amazing use of montage and the way it stitched its footage together. Some shots I initially thought initially were one take I realized under carefully scrutiny - and by that I mean frame-by-frame examination - were actually two melded together. The scenes showing how the Kim family infiltrate the Park’s household should be shown in film class to demonstrate how the art of montage is at its best should be done to maximum effect.
Best Costume Design
Little Women – Jacqueline Durran Funny how every single film nominated at the 92nd Academy Awards was a period piece. My vote goes to Little Women not because it was necessarily the most accurate (I couldn’t tell you what people wore in 1868) but because of the way the costumes were used. You can tell a lot about the characters from the multiple outfits they wear throughout the film - check out that purple bonnet adorned by Aunt Marsh (Meryl Streep).
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Bombshell – Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan, and Vivian Baker I called it when I reviewed the film. The makeup used to transform John Lithgow was nothing short of incredible. It was an easy pick.
Best Cinematography
1917 – Roger Deakins I’m glad to see The Lighthouse on this list but I have to hand it to 1917. The one-shot motif adds so much to the story. Then, there are the individual shots I remember so vividly. The quiet meadow just outside of No Man’s Land, the raging inferno Schofield sees when he wakes up, the trench he must run in front of to reach the Colonel are all shots that permanently imprint themselves into your memory.
Best Production Design
1917 – Production Design: Dennis Gassner; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales Tempted to hand it to Parasite for the house they constructed for the movie but I’m give it to 1917. The trenches, the blasted landscape of No Man’s Land still haunt me. When you see the craters, it’s jarring. Then, as your eyes become adjusted, you notice the rats. Then, the chunks of bone and charred meat that have now become part of the landscape. It’s horrific.
Best Sound Mixing
Ford v Ferrari – Paul Massey, David Giammarco, and Steven A. Morrow What you remember most from Ford v Ferrari is that big race at the end. The climax wouldn’t have been the same without the sounds we heard. The roar of the engines, the clacking and grinding as the pedals are pushed and gears are switched… the air rushing by. Out of the nominees, it’s the one whose sounds I most remember.
Best Sound Editing
Ford v Ferrari – Donald Sylvester This year, the Best Sound Editing award goes hand-in-hand with the sound mixing. Obviously, the actors were never moving at the kind of speeds depicted in Ford v Ferrari but you wouldn’t be able to tell because of the foley and sound design.
Best Original Song
Stand Up from Harriet – Music and Lyrics by Joshuah Brian Campbell and Cynthia Erivo Stand Up plays during the end credits of Harriet and it perfectly caps the film. Whenever I hear its lyrics, I’m transported back to that moment. It’s the most memorable and emotional song on this list.
Best Original Score
Joker – Hildur Guðnadóttir I chose the best song for its ability to stand out. In this category, Joker wins because its music doesn’t stand out… at least not at first. While you’re watching, those notes don’t draw attention to themselves. They subconsciously build the mood, augmenting the performance by Joaquin Phoenix, the visuals, and the story. You don’t notice how much of an effect it has on you until you see isolated clips. When you do, it’s shocking.
Best Animated Short Film
Abstaining (I’ve only seen Hair Love)
Best Live Action Short Film
Abstaining
Best Documentary Short Subject
Abstaining
Best Documentary Feature
Abstaining
Best International Feature Film
Abstaining, as I’ve only seen 2 films (Pain and Glory and Parasite)
Best Animated Feature Film
I Lost My Body – Jérémy Clapin and Marc du Pontavice I Lost My Body is the most audacious and inspired of the animated films nominated. The only movie among these to be aimed at adults, it often tells its story through visuals alone but when you get to the end, you realize it’s about more than just what was on-screen.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Little Women – Greta Gerwig based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott Greta Gerwig does more than merely adapt the classic novel, she breathes new life into it, makes it her own, makes it feel wholly new and modern. This version of the film surpasses all others we’ve seen before because of the changes she’s made to the story’s structure.
Best Original Screenplay
Knives Out – Rian Johnson What a ride Knives Out was. It’s got so many twists and turns, so many delightful characters you want to re-watch it the second it’s over so that you are no longer distracted by its central mystery and can simply step back and admire the handiwork by Rian Johnson. A sequel’s been announced and I can’t wait to see it.
Best Supporting Actress
Laura Dern – Marriage Story as Nora Fanshaw Laura Dern was also in Little Women and her two roles couldn’t be more different. Here, she’s loathsome and captivating. As soon as I saw Nora take off her shoes before she kneeled down on the couch to console Nicole, I knew there was a whole lot more to her character than what we were told. The more you see her, the more you want.
Best Supporting Actor
Al Pacino – The Irishman as Jimmy Hoffa Al Pacino has the advantage of getting A LOT of screen time as Jimmy Hoffa. The Irishman clocks in at over 3,5 hours and he isn’t in the whole movie but when he is, the seasoned performer gives us so much. At different periods of the story, you’ll feel differently about him. There’s no point comparing him to the real-life person. He takes the meaty role and makes it his own. His voice, his mannerisms, I can’t think of anyone who could’ve done it better.
Best Actress
Renée Zellweger – Judy as Judy Garland Judy was the very last movie on my list to watch, having missed it when it came to theatres. When I think back to Zellweger’s performance, I don’t see her. All I see is her character, a rich, complex person you sometimes hate, sometimes love and feel sorry for. The movie is not going to be on my “Best of” list but she is.
Best Actor
Joaquin Phoenix – Joker as Arthur Fleck / Joker To me, there was no question Joaquin Phoenix would take this one. I saw Joker three times and each time, I found something new in his performance.
Best Director
Sam Mendes – 1917 With this award, I’m awarding Sam Mendes for the craft he displayed in 1917. It’s such a visceral experience that when people asked me how it compared to Dunkirk, it felt weird to lump both together. This is coming from someone who gave both pictures a 5-star review, who put both on their respective “best of the year” lists. It’s a movie I’m going to go back to and wondering “how did they do that?!
Best Picture
Little Women – Amy Pascal It’s a tough call for me this year, partially because I loved Parasite, 1917, Joker, and others so much. I’m planning on adding those three films to my collection so I can pop them into my Blu-ray player any times I feel like it. That said, I would’ve given the Best Picture Award to Little Women. You’re so emotionally invested in this little story that telling you why with merely words is impossible. You fall in love over and over. It made me cry and every time I think back to that scene at Christmas, I tear up again. I’m choosing it because of all the things it does differently from the other films. At the end of the day, it isn’t a big story. It isn’t about people with guns, corruption, war, a turning point in history or even necessarily the biggest event in the lives of the characters but it feels like it is. That’s exactly why it’s so good.
Disagree with my choices? I don’t blame you. What kind of idiot finds a way to leave out Marriage Story from their list? You let me know where it should’ve gone. Hopefully, commenting keep you warm until MY Best of 2019 list gets posted in the next few days.
