Would you be interested in a BSG Big Bang event?

So, this is a kind of Impulsive idea that I had while walking the dog I'm petsitting earlier.

Basically, as of this December, it will have been 20 years(!!) since the miniseries first aired.

Also, I've recently wandered back into the fandom, and while I know there are other fans out there, I haven't made many connections, and one of the best ways I've made fandom friends has been through Events like Big Bangs/exchanges.

Also also, I like BB events; they help me Finish Stuff XD

And...yeah, I thought (again, Impulsively) that I might be willing to try and run one??? If people are interested. As a way to make friends, and also, like. 20 years. That's a Thing all right. (I thought about 'maybe put it off to next year' but then I added up the dates and. Welp.)

Details still sort of vague but my thought is that it would be open to any BSG fic (meaning no restrictions on pairings/ratings as long as everything is appropriately tagged; fics relating to Caprica or Blood and Chrome would probably also be fair game; not sure about the original 70s series, I'd probably want to focus on the reimagined series timeline, but Maybe). I'm thinking a minimum wordcount of 10k? But not married to that number. Podfics and maybe fanmixes would count as art. And then posting would be in December, to line up with that 20-year mark.

Anyway, I'm putting together a poll to gauge interest! Because I do want to do this and am willing to set it up/run it if people want to participate, so here we go!

I decided I had to make something for this amazing fic by the lovely @crack--attack. It has quickly climbed the charts of my all time favourite fics and I'm definitely going to be rereading it many more times to come. And if you haven't read it yet, you should give it a go! Especially if, like me, you have a lot of religious trauma. Its very cathartic.

So, I'm not so good at drawing humans. I tried to think of what art I could draw, but eventually I decided to make a fanmix instead. However, that quickly spiraled into me making something much, much too complicated for just a playlist cover. So I'm showing it off here in its full glory before I have to crop it.

Anyways, I had a blast making both the art and the playlist, and so I just hope its enjoyed. Also, because I have more to say and show off, detail shots and ✨Symbolism✨ below the cut. Also, spoilers for the fic as well, so don't read below if you haven't read the fic.

So I spent some time thinking about what I'd want to have on the stained glass. After cycling through a few options, I landed on the peacock and the lamb.

Now, I grew up nondenominational Christian, not Catholic, so sorry if I got some things off here. But looking into things, I decided on the peacock instead of the more obvious choices because, apparently, in some peoples beliefs, it is used to represent immortality and eternal beauty. And well... that felts very, very fitting for Nandor. His stained glass colors are made to look like blood, of course.

For Guillermo, I just went with the obvious choice of the sacrificial lamb. For the colors, however, I decided to mirror the colors of the half burnt christ up top. Various shades of white and yellow for purity and holiness to god. But, as you get further up, the yellow darkens into more of an orange. Some symbolism for Nandor's colors mingling with his. 'Tainting' him in the churches eyes.

And then of course, the red eyes from the fire. I thought that would be a fun combo, the fire burning and cleansing Guillermo of his old life, as well as the fact that at the end, he's changed into a vampire, just like Nandor.

There's more small details and obvious things, but that's the big stuff I wanted to communicate with this piece that I wasn't sure if it would make sense. Symbolism talk over!

oh man this makes me wish I was better about saving my favorite comments on things. I actually did post a similar response like this I think a bit ago...but ofc now I can't find it. however I did find another classic @mikkeneko ask, which I feel like you had one of those on the last post too...

in general I collect some of these on my testimonials page, that more or less functions as a "favorite things people have said about me for various reasons" collection page.

with the caveat that seriously I fuckin' treasure...everything...like, I go and reread every comment on certain fics sometimes just to feel good, to highlight a few that come to mind :

1. "see the thing about lise fic is you have to ask "*which* vivisection fic"" - @mikkeneko. this is just one of those things where someone says something to you and you're like. okay. okay I would resent that but also it's true and also it's funny and it's really no one else's fault that I apparently. keep writing vivisection fic. (#liseproblems)

2. “I absolutely love how you’ve made two-people-who-hate-each-others-guts-on-the-worlds-worst-road-trip your Brand.” -FanaticDomainExpert. I don't even remember what fic this was talking about. Or maybe it was just generally, because it really could be several different ones.

3. the comment I got once on 8tracks on my Curufin/Finrod fanmix: "A well put together collection of music,that you could play at gathering of squares." I have no idea what it means but it's still pretty fuckin' funny.

4. this comment on domestic bliss, interrupted from illuminate: "Had a real weird moment when I caught myself being angry at WWX and LWJ for being mean to XY. I am clearly not immune to the Xue Yang"

5. for a recent one that I feel like I should maybe add to my testimonials page actually: "Comes for the smut, stays to cry." -Y1ling_Patriarch on naked and breathless which is a solid summary of that fic.

but I feel like I have to give a general shoutout here to @neuxue who leaves absolutely delightful reviews on things, most recently including "serious analysis of a title I chose largely as a joke" which. wish I'd thought of that!!! tfw your readers are smarter than you are.

The fanmixes are those ones I've been pulling together since spring, so rest assured they are slated to be posted! I'm doing one for each crew member (except remaining unknown quantity Park, poor Park, or maybe lucky Park since all the mixes have heaps of angst tracks), and I was planning to post those first, then the three canon ship mixes, then miscellany like noncanon ships and Other Violet.

I haven't quite finished the first, Sana's...it's admittedly already on the longer side for a non-shuffle mix, but it needs a couple more tracks in the middle before I'll be happy with it. I've been listening to tracks I haven't heard by artists I like, and I found another good Sana track this morning...

But as I said in my tags there's...actually no reason for character mixes to come before the ship mixes? I think that that started as a vague plan when nothing was close to completion, and now it hadn't hit me yet that all three canon ships are ready. The Campathi mix is still on the shorter side, but shorter mixes aren't a bad thing, so I'm calling it done! Ship mix time! (I know, I could always interleave characters and ships, but I like categories. 😄)

I have. Never heard "concept ship name" as a term for that kind of ship name, I love it. I read "mint trees" and my gremlin brain immediately came up with something far worse:

I like the idea of "battle poetry" for Brian/Krejjh...they create battle poetry and he studied an epic poem. Of course, that could create confusion between battle poetry the ship name and battle poetry the thing. I can't think of any serious suggestions for Vikady... I actually think the fatal flaw of both mint trees and tea tree is not that they are silly but that the mint tea was also kind of Arkady's thing, so it would be nice to combine stuff that has to do with each of them. (Anyone?)

I HADN'T SEEN CAPTAIN SOUP. Glorious. I definitely got Campathi from you, IDK if you came up with it or just popularized it ("popularized" = "got at least one other person to start using it"...everything in a small fandom is relative, eh)?

The only ones I've come up with are Tripatel and Tripateliu, when I was trying to come up with a smushname for Arkady/Sana and thought it was cute their surnames nested together that way. Then I realized Violet's does too!! Fate, clearly.

To come full circle, I came up with Tripatel in the process of tagging my first post about fanmixes, since they were the start...

Last week I was listening to a new album and thought “hey this is a good Arkady/Sana track I should make an Arkady/Sana fanmix” which is all well and good but then as I was building the fanmix I kept running into tracks that’d work better for Vikady or Sana/Campbell or Arkady or…..and long story short I now have fanmixes in progress for Arkady/Sana, Arkady/Violet, Campbell/Sana, tscosi in general, Violet, Arkady, Sana, and Krejjh

arkady/violet arkady/sana campbell/sana does arkady/sana have a smushname a quick search reveals nothing that would bar sakady or tripatel from ship name use i think i'm gonna go with tripatel because I simply think it is cute that their names nest together that way

(Technically Arkady/Sana is at the rear of the posting queue because noncanon, but I'm also chicken since "Much of the appeal is that it'd be such a messed up disaster" seems like a great way to alienate anyone who doesn't ship it and anyone who ships it in the sense of thinking they'd be good together. But I'll human up and post their angsty, angsty tracks some day. 😆)

I'd like to sign up to write something for the BigBang, but I'm a bit confused as I've never done one before. Some of the description sounds as though a writer can propose what they're going to write, & then in other places it sounds more as tho' you'll be assigned something from a list to match your likes/dislikes etc. I've learned the hard way that I don't work well from prompts, so I feel I can only really do this if I get to create my own assignment, if that makes sense. Please advise?

First of all, thank you for reaching out, I’m really glad you’re considering taking part in the Big Bang. Second of all, I’ll do my best to make the dynamics of the Big Bang and provide some examples so it all becomes clearer (especially for those who have never participated in one, it can be quite confusing).

Along with their sign-up, writers will submit their prompts of stories they’ll like to work on, as well as their likes and dislikes in terms of story-writing and visual content. After that, writers will be paired up with visual content creators that match their story and visual content likes (and) dislikes. The matching as such is with visual content creators who may be willing to create visual content (moodboards, gifsets, picspams, fanmixes, vids, etc) for your story, their interests and likes will align with those of the writer’s.

I’ll give a potential scenario of participants as an example:

-Person A (writer): likes writing for all genres, doesn’t really have a problem with ratings (but tends to prefer T to M rated stories), but doesn’t roll with graphic descriptions of violence. This person only writes in-universe stories, and has thought of writing 1) a story in which Cassian and Jyn will be undercover in an imperial facility for six standard months, and discover an imperial plan to invade a planet to seize their resources; 2) a story in which Cassian and Jyn pose as Core World senators to gather intelligence for the Alliance on Coruscant, and caught wind of rumors that the empire is building a biological weapon to use against the rebels. They’d like pretty much any kind of visual content for their story.

-Person B (writer): likes writing romance with slow-burn and mutual pinning, doesn’t have a problem with ratings and is all down for an E rating if the story calls for it, it’s not adverse to smut being featured in stories either, they don’t really mind graphic descriptions of violence, but would rather avoid gore. This person likes writing in-universe stories, fusions and modern AUs. They have thought of 1) a Love Actually Rogue One AU, 2) a Marvel fusion, in which both Jyn and Cassian are mutants, there have been anti-mutant attacks perpetrated by an extremist group, Cassian and Jyn are both determined to help the victims and find out the people behind the attacks. They’d rather have moodboards or gifsets done for their stories, though they have no issues with other form of visual content at all.

-Person C (visual content creator): likes all genres and ratings, enjoys making edits, gifsets and manips, though they can also manage with other forms of visual content (save for vids). They don’t like modern AUs, historical AUs or fandom fusions.

-Person D (visual content creator): likes all genres and ratings, save for explicit content (especially too graphic violence and/or smut). They can create fanart, picspams and moodboards. They don’t really have a preference and doesn’t have an issue with AUs, fusions, though they enjoy more in-universe content.

[Of course, these are simplified sign-ups, the form you are to submit allows for more details, preferences and DNWs).

In this scenario, writer Person A would be paired up with visual content creator Person C, while Person B would be paired up with both visual content creators C and D. In all cases, the participants involved would have to claim the partnership they like best (Person A would have to tell the mods if they are okay with having Person C as project partner and vice-versa, while Person B would have to choose whether to work with Person C or D, or both, Person C and D would have to tell the mods if they are willing to work with Person B).

In short, and to answer your doubt, writers have complete control over the stories they want to write. Should their ideas suffer any changes, they will do so along the process of writing the story and working with their project partner (with whom they can brainstorm ideas, ask for opinions and advice, etc), given that teamwork is at the centre of a BigBang event.

Okokok, I THINK I did a somewhat-decent job answering all your questions under the cut, but for a writer, I am REALLY bad at explaining things, so hopefully it's alright!

Also, I want to clarify for ya, Anon-you can disregard any or all of the stuff I ramble about down here. In general, I added a LOT of super-specific stuff to my list to give whoever plenty of options, but frankly, you could give me a crayon doodle of one of my mains and I'd be happy. I don't want you to feel obligated make anything specific-whatever you think you can make, and whatever sounds fun to you!

#1: Okay, in the interest of not going on for FOREVER, the main reason I listed BotW specifically is because I like the Zelda series in theory, but I am very bad at puzzles and have too poor a memory to keep track of long quest lines, so I am Very Very Bad at most Zelda games.

But! Putting that aside, I also just really love the aesthetics of BotW, both the magic-tech-fusion and the beautiful wilderness and small settlements. Plus, the events of all the past games are so far off in the past that they're only seen in the form of old ruins and myths and it's just SUCH a neat mystery element, especially since they also throw in stuff that ISN'T related to anything else in the series just to throw you off your rhythm.

I also apparently have a soft spot for amnesiac protagonists? Which I didn't notice until my friend teased me over it, but yeah, I love BotW!Link but he makes me sad.

So, short version: I like the LoZ series as a whole; but I'm too dumb for traditional Zelda games and can only really handle wandering around lost in the middle of nowhere, and BotW is a really good take on wandering around lost in the middle of nowhere. #2: Crackship is basically shorthand for any particularly bonkers and weird ship. It could be weird because they wouldn't be a good couple, because they don't have any chemistry, or (in the case of basically EVERY Smash Bros ship.) because they're from straight up different times or universes. In the case of my Smash Bros. pairings-both romantic and platonic-there's basically no interaction between them even in the context of Smash, but it's fun to think about, and based on their personalities, I feel like they'd get along. #3: Playlists-how you go about it is really up to you! Usually, in this case it's a set of songs inspired by a certain series, character, ship, etc., based off of lyrics, or sometimes just the Vibes. That's what I've been doing for the SSB Secret Santa in the past.

They tend to be a bit of an eclectic collection of songs, at least when I make 'em, since I both try to make them at least 15 songs long and have no regard for genres. The Kirby and Inkling one was mostly just 'action-y music that has the right energy,' the Pit one was more character-specific, and the Sheik one was somewhere in between. With Smash Bros., when in doubt, just adding upbeat music that feels like it fits the energy of that specific character is always a good option.

Of course, it's all up to you. If you're more comfortable writing, drawing, editing, whatever, that's awesome too! I just don't see a lotta folks doing fanmixes, and I think they're neat, so I thought I'd signal that it's an option.

#4: I was gonna say 'Oh, thanks for asking for one per volume, I'm bad at decisions,' but THAT'S NOT HELPING AS MUCH AS I'D THOUGHT, especially in some cases. *glares at Volumes 2, 4 and 7* So, some of these are doubled-up, sorry!
