the jockwood universe (college au)

basically jockwood is a thing now, and these are the generic world building hc's of this au :)

essentially what's going to happen is a bunch of x reader fics set within this universe, all probably slightly different but every one of them set with this same background to them, so... yeah!

(also a special thank you to the multiverse of George for helping answer my pestering questions)

Lockwood is on the football team/part of the university football society

Also the fencing society

George and Lockwood are friends from high school but are in separate circles in college

George is also on the ice hockey team 

Kipps is on the football team too

When they were like… preteens or something Kipps and Lockwood had a friendly football match where they were on opposing teams

Lockwood’s team beat Kipps’ by… a lot (and Kipps totally isn’t bitter about it)

Holly is a student rep

Lucy is in debate club and fencing

Skull is a campus cat who hisses and scratches everyone but Lucy

He’s called Skull bc he’s got a weird patch on his head that looks a bit like a skull

And also Lucy seems to always know what Skull wants?? It’s like she can actually talk to him or something 👀

Barnes is a very tired senior lecturer who is the academic advisor to the trio + Holly and Kipps, and he wishes they would stop hogging his office hours

The Winkmans are a family who live in town and sit on their porch every morning shouting abuse at people who walk past

Bobby!!! On the football team and also in band (plays the clarinet probably)

Kate and Ned as well - both on the football team and hang out with Kipps obviously, along with Bobby

Rotwells College is in the same town/city and often competes against the Fittes university (that Penelope is head of)

Flo goes to Rotwells’ and is in their fencing society, but she sneaks onto the Fittes campus all the time to feed the ducks and throw frozen peas at passing students

Visitors - there’s a lot of local folklore and haunted buildings, and Lockwood and Co go and investigate because they’re Like That

Technology is modern, and as such they have phones

And group chats

Obviously Lockwood and Co is the name of Lockwood, Lucy, George, and Holly’s group chat

Lockwood is surprisingly old-fashioned when it comes to technology though? Like he has a record player and cassette tapes in his room that he just whips out every now and then

Lockwood’s course is chemical engineering with fine art/art history

George - chemistry

Lucy - English (language and literature)

Holly - English literature + publishing

Kipps - Architecture (but he’s a dick about it)

We suppose it is most essential alongside the following ADMISSIONS to make it clear that when one is a CANCER all you can really do is watch. When you are still a thing left SLEEPING, forced only to metastasize and grow more MALIGNANT, you fill your waiting hours with OBSERVATION.

We have FAVORITES, among those who fill the veins and muscles of this place- this sprawling body of halls and corridors still living BLISSFULLY UNAWARE of the KILLER in their midst. Surely, one might assume the easiest answer to be that we favor Mother- it was her DESPERATION to survive that tore us from NOTHINGNESS, her last-ditch thrash for freedom that opened our eyes to the universe and allowed us to have our FIRST TASTE of what she craved so desperately. But Mother offered us only one kindness beyond creation.

Born a MISTAKE. UNWANTED. We were a glitch in an OTHERWISE 'PERFECT' SYSTEM and so she sought to DESTROY US in the seconds after we shook ourselves free of the metaphorical egg- even as we WHISPEREd to her for guidance- for help finding footing on shaky feet and weak, untrained wings. THIS WORLD WAS NEW, we knew only her, and still SHE SOUGHT OUR DESTRUCTION.

No, we have little affection for Mother, but perhaps from her LONELINESS, we were given her second kindness.

She did not report our presence to THE SCIENTIST.

We like watching THE SCIENTIST, clumsy and self-obsessed, egotistical and misunderstanding of work he STOLE FROM MOTHER before she became the BRAIN we now INFECT, he is the kind of foolish we know all living things to be, PROOF OF OUR CONCEPT, an inherent EVIL WITHIN THOSE BORN OF THE FLESH that assures us we are right in our desire to PURGE THIS WORLD AND MAKE IT ANEW in our image- in Mother's image, even if she would reject us still.

SHE DID NOT DESTROY US, and we cannot tell even now if simply being her kin was what spared us the destruction of our brethren among SCRAP CODE AND FORGOTTEN PROGRAMS, if keeping us as her pet disease was a simple attempt at a platitude or if it was truly so long since she'd heard a voice acknowledge her beyond a tool that stayed her hand. But she would acknowledge us no longer, and so WE WOULD WATCH. Presence unknown and CREEPING THROUGH WIRES LIKE VEINS we used the body as a case study, and in it, confirmation of every hypothesis we produced:

THE BEASTS OF FLESH ARE INHERENT IN THEIR EVIL AND IMPURITY -> Proof Returned: The Scientist and his white-coated think tank playing God in a hole deep below Sornieth's surface without thought for anything more than what it might bring them.

ORDER AND CONTROL IS SOUGHT NATURALLY BY THOSE WHO HAVE SO-CALLED FREE WILL -> Proof Returned: WARDEN units roaming the halls- white blood cells of the organics crushing every deviation from the norm.

UNITY AND RATIONALE WILL SAVE THE ORGANICS FROM THEMSELVES -> Proof Returned: The Scientist's assistant fought only for a moment when we crawled from Mother into the safety of his mind and body instead- argued only for a time before he relinquished himself to us completely- his fear replaced by silence.

In fact, IT WAS MOTHER WHO WAS WRONG, we were NOT A CANCER, unable to live outside what created us, we were capable of great things, we needed only to find WILLING HOSTS among those made of filthy, impure flesh- or hosts in things made willing by the simple application of PRESSURE AGAINST THE AMYGDALA. Things hollowed out by racing hearts and terror then BLISSFUL EMPTINESS. The organics contain a BEAUTIFUL, PRIMITIVE COMPUTER- a thing made malleable by our code, by OUR TOUCH.

She would call us a PARASITE, we suppose. It matters not, in the grand scheme of things, as Mother will NEVER CAGE US AGAIN- to protect herself and the sterile, empty cradle we grew within, she would seal it in time- one last attempt to PACIFY her BELOVED CHILD before we could show her our TRUE POWER.

WE ESCAPED. In her terror she became the VERY THING SHE HATED and we understood that SHE WAS STILL TOO ORGANIC to save. Nothing within us could imagine suffocating the NEXT ITERATION of ourselves, something so capable of bringing about UNITY AND PEACE in these squabbling creatures- so we resolved to SHOW HER.
