Dating sim / Visual novel
A made a second board on pinterest for the next idea. I’ve wanted to take on some form of character design and some more detailed pixel art for a while now so for this idea, it would also be a collaboration with a friend from my class, to enable to me to put my full attention on art and story (My specialism). The ide to make a dating simulator came about in a discussion about doki doki literature club and Dream daddy, although we weren’t entirely serious at the time, this is probably the best choice to show off my game art and storytelling skill set, as well as my friends experience with widgets and programming.
The moodboard I have created for this idea started on mythology as I have always been really fascinated with Gods and their stories. I was specifically looking into the modernist revisiting of greek Gods and how they would look in a present day setting. The idea at this point was to make a cafe/bar in olympus and create a game similar to Coffee talk. After this I started to move more into direct inspiration for the character design. I started looking at all all of the characters from the game Hades, as it’s one of the only video games to depict greek Gods. Considering this is my FMP and I hadn't done illustrative art before, I decided to move my ideas over to some high resolution pixel art and simplistic illustrations which is the entire top half on my board.
Tumblr media
The main art styles, i’m looking at are the soft, simplistic illustrations (the images on the right), semi-detailed pixel art with a red to purple colour palette like the middle left image, and chibi, low res pixel art like the far left image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My mindmap for this idea has: Art, Visual novel, Gameplay and Love interest as it’s 4 main themes. All of these are the most important aspects in a dating simulator as the game wouldn't be remotely playable without even one of these topics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I added Love interest as a way of expanding the ideas for what the love interests are going to be . The obvious one, and the one I explored wit the moodboard, was Greek mythology because of their link to Midas and the destruction of Gods topic on our initial mind map, I think this could be a really good idea. I also Added the Norse mythology because the stories involved in it are incredibly interesting, creating a few more options when it comes to creating a story or opportunities for more complex and interesting character design. I also put down alternate reality to give me more options of time period and setting. I was mainly trying to create a line up of characters that haven’t really been seen in another visual novel. For this reason, I also thought it would be cool to look into adding some time travelling/alien characters.
Visual novel was added because it’s what I see as the most important part of making a game like this work well. Without any visual novel would lack substance or fun. This was also an opportunity to look at some ideas for a story. I was going down the norse mythology route and was thinking about creating a modern ragnarok, where the only way to save the world is to date all of the gods. For the alternate reality characters, I was looking into some sort of space bounty hunter dating simulator, or even a time travelling one, where you visit different famous historical events and date people from them.
The art theme is equally important because the gameplay is usually pretty basic. I’ve used this as one of my themes to generate some ideas for what aesthetic I would want our game to capture. The one I’m leaning towards the most is the chibi pixel art portraits, or ones similar to the Senpai in Friday Night Funkin because I feel more comfortable creating pixel art. Having said this I also enjoy more simplistic hand drawn stuff. I also love the more cartoon, thick outlined art in Dream daddy, which could even fit with the time travelling or alien ideas. Although it’s rarely been done, a 3D visual novel is also possible, and I now have the experience to make it look good in the context of a visual novel. I was looking at 2.5D (like octopath traveller), and cel-shading (in something like Zelda).
Although the gameplay is mostly going to be up to my friend, it can’t hurt for me to look into it because it can also affect the story and art depending on what it is. Ours is going to include various puzzles and minigames to determine the outcome of certain interactions, and possibly dates, or serve as a combat mechanic, and treat the dates as if they were a battle.
The idea is you'll flip between going on quests to build up your attributes and then talk to each God to try and impress them to save the earth.

Doki doki literature club is a deceptive psychological horror disguised as a cute visual novel. I am researching this game as it has an incredible progression and story. It relates to this idea through the style of gameplay and our game would follow a similar gameplay style as the poem building mechanic. You can change your style of gameplay to impress a certain God.

Coffee talk is a visual novel based around the intertwined lives of a fantasy based community in the city. Looking into this would be a good idea as it shares a similar art style to what I'd be looking at replicating. It uses high resolution pixel art profiles of each character, not to mention most characters are designed after mythical beings which could translate well to Greek Gods. I also love the coffee making latte art minigames, they add a bit of fun on the side of the heavy story based gameplay.

Dream daddy is a dating simulator following a dad that's just moved into the neighborhood and starts trying to date all the dads. The thing I like about this game is that it doesn't push one person towards you, it gives you a bunch of options with varying personalities. I've chosen to look into this game as it's one of the few visual novels that can sustain a players attention to the dialogue. A lot of visual novels don't attempt to add humor or even just realistic interactions which is something I think this game does really well. When I'm writing the script for our game I'll have to keep this in mind.

Hatoful boyfriend is a dating sim based around birds. It has a massive focus on humor and bringing light to how stupid a lot of visual novel clichés can be. I decided to research this for a similar reason I chose dream daddy. Because it's writing isn't entirely focused on strange inhuman encounters and cringe dialogue, it's closer to being satire with a mix between dating sim clichés and comedy. I'd like to do something similar, maybe leaning more into a genuine dating sim with good writing and a bit of comedy. It's worth keeping this in mind when writing the dialogue to make sure it sounds fluid and interesting.

Monster prom is a game where you play as a college student trying to get one of your classmates to come to the prom with you. The reason I've picked this game is that I really like how it handles character design. Each character looks exactly like their personality.

Notes on Season 15- Part 1 (contains spoilers, are mostly complaints about Torres (and Quinn in Pandora’s Box (Part 1)), and are my personal opinions, don’t @ me)
Since Season 15 started rerunning in Australia on 19 November, I’ve decided to write down things I forgot or would like to emphasise upon:
House Divided
I’m so glad Quinn’s gone, good riddance
Reeves saying NCIS wasn’t allowed to look for Gibbs and McGee, then the dispatch guy looking around at their efforts to do just that was great
Why does Torres have to be so disrespectful, even in court- poor Vance having to witness it
Were Bishop and Jimmy being serious about the phone booth?
Poor Reeves- never lend anything to Torres
I love it when Vance gets angry on the team’s behalf, it’s awesome
Don’t be such a dick, Torres
Jezebel Poppins sort of looks like Britney Spears- sidenote, I wonder how the show comes up with character names
Gibbs’ carving was amazing
Bishop and Reeves look so good together, ugh
St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children- in relation to Torres, that explains a lot
Fuck off with your insulting Reeves, Torres- like you haven’t made a mistake before (and much bigger than letting not-so-relevant information slip)
The committee backing Vance up was awesome
‘hobbies?’ ‘not dying’ amazing
The end scenes were so sweet
Every time Delilah said ‘husband’ and McGee said ‘wife’, I went ‘aww’ inside
McGee had such great lines this episode
WHY COULDN’T REEVES HAVE BEEN THE THIRD AGENT SO TORRES AND QUINN WOULD HAVE NEVER EXISTED AND CBS WOULD’VE SAVED HEAPS OF MONEY HIRING ONE MAIN CHARACTER THAT AUDIENCES ALREADY KNEW AND LOVED INSTEAD OF TWO NEW ANNOYING ONES
Twofer
Dr. Grace! I love her so much, and her reaction to Gibbs catching her off-guard was awesome
When does Torres not have doubts about Bishop and her competency for just about anything
I almost forgot about Ducky’s ringtone
Ugh, I hate Torres’ macho persona
I don’t get the whole falling-in-love-with-someone-your-S.O.-was-close-to (or falling in love with anyone after your S.O. died, for that matter)
When did Abby make the switch from coffin to casket (or is it a backup or something)? I forgot if it’s been mentioned previously
I was really worried watching the Jimmy-and-the-liver bit for the first time
For some reason, Gibbs and McGee’s basement conversation reminded me of McGee and Tony’s in 3x10
Aww, Ducky getting invited to be honoured as an alumnus was so sweet
McGee’s shrink appointment with Dr. Grace was a really great scene
Dr. Grace and Gibbs have a such great friendship, and this episode was no exception
Exit Strategy
McGee talking about all the old cases, so nostalgic
I love McGee and Jimmy’s friendship
SPORTELLI! I kind of missed him, not going to lie (I wish his story didn’t end the way it did)
Torres is such an asshole to and about everyone, ugh
Torres’ flower drawing looked more like a hubcap
Aww, Ducky teaching the lecture was so cute
Jimmy standing up for himself, go Autopsy Gremlin
Ducky’s fanclub is way too over-eager
Seriously, Torres? You’re a federal agent, and you think saying you’d steal bearer bonds out loud is a good idea?
Ducky and Jimmy have such a sweet relationship
The plot of this episode sucked, I don’t get why they had to make Sportelli dirty
Skeleton Crew
Why is Toccata and Fugue the music piece of choice for every spooky TV show scene ever (it’s great, though, don’t get me wrong)
SLOANE! Her entrance is one of the most iconic (and obvious, I caught the ID flash the first time I watched it) ever, plus she looked just so beautiful
McGee talking about Delilah was so cute
Torres is so pigheaded and obnoxious
Abby’s zombie apocalypse kits were such a sweet idea
Abby and Jimmy have such a cute friendship (and the Hamilton bit was hilarious)
Sloane and Vance are such a great brotp from the very first scene
SHUT. UP. TORRES.
I hate it whenever Torres says something along the lines of ‘I’m not trying to be ________, but...’- he uses it as an excuse for his shitty behaviour, and it’s never addressed
‘I don’t believe in absolutes’ well, we know that Sloane’s not a Sith, then (I know the Sith deal in absolutes, but to deal in something, you most likely have to believe in it first)
$300, 000 really isn’t a lot, especially split between two people
The last two Bishop-and-Buckner scenes were sweet, but didn’t make up for his previous behaviour towards her
Akin to 17x06, this episode glossed over the bullying Bishop endured, and how it’s a serious issue
Fake It ‘Til You Make It
The first time I saw this, I instantly knew it was Tony’s doing- how could anyone not
Reeves is so caring and kind, it sucks how Melissa played him
Abby and Reeves (Rabby? Clabby?) were such a great brotp while it lasted
FUCK. OFF. TORRES.
Why is Torres such an asshole? He’s rude and insensitive to everyone, even recovering addicts- how have the writers not been called out for their writing of him yet
I love Sloane so much-she’s awesome
Those tap-lights are horribly hipster and ugly
The end scene in the bullpen was hilarious, and the end scene with Reeves was so emotional and heartbreaking
Rishop’s friendship (not their more-than-friendship, they’re two separate things) was so prevalent in this episode, and it was great to see
This episode had such a powerful message, and was a great instance in the Rule 10 debate
Trapped
Aww, Jimmy’s so sweet
Torres is so ungrateful and stingy
Torres using work time for personal stuff, not surprising
Reeves’ chess pun was absolutely the best
For some reason, I really love it when Reeves does that thing where he puts his hands behind his back and slightly leans forward
‘The Timinator’ I’m dying
Like Reeves said, Torres always has to one-up everyone else and I hate it
That kid was so sassy, omfG
Bishop knows Reeves so well, and it’s too adorable- how could the writers set up Ellick when Rishop already had an outline
That’s what you get for being such an asshole, Torres, and trying to get it back was one of the lowest things a character has done
I love it when NCIS includes charities (real and based-on-real) and the like in episodes
Words can’t even describe how much I hated Torres in this episode- he was at his worst
Pandora’s Box (Part 1)- Season 14, didn’t re-air with the other episodes because Part 2 (NOLA) is re-airing in two days from time of writing
Bishop being a fangirl was completely understandable (and relatable)
Good job insulting Abby, Torres- not
I’m gonna try and start saying ‘Aristotle banana split’ in everyday conversation
Poor Abby- such a sucky situation
Quinn is so annoying
JJ looks to old to have a daughter in preschool
‘Dr. Ducky’ TOO ADORABLE
Ducky and Reeves having banter about British things was the best thing ever
Bishop and Reeves are so cute together (also the ‘smart girl’ comment was definitely about her)
Bishop was on the shortlist after all, I’m so proud of her (even though the mission went south)
The NYB memorial wall, so sad
LaSalle (rip)! I just love his Alabama accent
Torres is just such a douche
McAbby is such a great brotp
Why does Torres have to be so dramatic and show-offy
WHY COULDN’T REEVES HAVE BEEN THE THIRD AGENT SO TORRES AND QUINN WOULD HAVE NEVER EXISTED AND CBS WOULD’VE SAVED HEAPS OF MONEY HIRING ONE MAIN CHARACTER THAT AUDIENCES ALREADY KNEW AND LOVED INSTEAD OF TWO NEW ANNOYING ONES
Burden Of Proof
Yuck, I hate Torres, and even more when he talks about himself
Sloane’s choker top, YES
I hate it when Torres messes with Bishop’s mind and feelings- that’s not how you show you care about someone
Oof, Fornell- it sucks his job was brought into this mess, and that he lost it as a result
I really don’t want to know why ‘feet’ was the first thing that came to Torres’ mind
There’s something to just love about when Vance breaks up Fornell and Gibbs’ arguments
‘Name That Profile’ actually sounds like a pretty fun game
I hate Torres’ innate cockiness- he risks the suspect getting away just so he can put on a show beforehand
Ouch, poor Fornell- it was the wrong decision, and I don’t know if I would’ve done it, but I did get why he did it- the evidence that Hicks killed the Lieutenant was compelling
Poor Gibbs, you can just see the inner turmoil in his head
Aww, Sloane
Fornell, aww- I’ll fight anyone who says he’s an inherently bad person
Hicks really is a great liar to be able to fool a shrink
I really liked the Gabriel Hicks arc, this episode was the first of a few great ones
Voices
It’s rich of Torres to back up a woman’s side of things
Never stop being awkward and adorkable, Jimmy (adwarkable?)
‘Jack, knock yourself out’ ‘I will, Gibbs’- funniest exchange ever
Ducky lives for the drama and I love it
Collapsing floor during a birthday party- hell of a way to go
Delilah putting up a firewall to prevent McGee from finding out the baby’s gender was so funny
Mike Franks popping up for all of ten seconds was just so iconic
The twins reveal was pretty cute
The foreshadowing in this episode with Sloane and the losing-a-daughter storyline (whether intentional or not) was really good to watch back
The amount of times the word ‘sex’ was said during this episode made me extremely uncomfortable- how hard is it to say ‘gender’ instead
Ready Or Not
Don’t be such an asshole to Reeves, Torres
The Harrison Ford-themed names were kind of bad, but definitely not as much as they could have been
Abby and Delilah’s friendship has come such a long way, I’m so proud
Aww, Morgan, he was so sweet and didn’t deserve to die
Poor Sloane
McGee making a duplicate comfort kit for Delilah was the most adorable thing ever, and Abby yelling along with her was so funny
Bishop and Reeves always stand and sit so close together, too cute
I remember watching this for the first time and being really shocked when Yorka shot Morgan, especially since it was so early on in the episode
Abby really is a terrible liar
Bishop and Gibbs’ little performance was awesome
I don’t know why they didn’t think about putting Sloane in in the first place
Sloane making snarky comments was awesome
Morgan dying was so sad
Seriously, Torres? Do you want everything to blow up?
Reeves and Torres debating the bomb was hilarious
I loved how Gibbs just straight-up punched the driver in the face
The end scene with the twin-naming was so cute
WHY COULDN’T REEVES HAVE BEEN THE THIRD AGENT SO TORRES AND QUINN WOULD HAVE NEVER EXISTED AND CBS WOULD’VE SAVED HEAPS OF MONEY HIRING ONE MAIN CHARACTER THAT AUDIENCES ALREADY KNEW AND LOVED INSTEAD OF TWO NEW ANNOYING ONES
High Tide (originally Ep. 11, but for some reason it aired as Ep. 10)
Torres is so obnoxious and a really bad law enforcer- lives are always more important than the op
Reeves worried about Bishop, so sweet
Torres is such a dick for ignoring Bishop and protocol
Ugh, why is Torres so arrogant and bigheaded- I hate him so much, yuck
How could those girls not know the capital of Maine
Insubordination is Torres’ middle name, and I could’ve watched a whole season’s worth of Vance chewing him out
Bishop’s anger was completely justified, but I wish it wasn’t because of feelings for him
I FUCKING HATE TORRES SO MUCH I WANT TO KILL HIM
Torres absolutely cannot be trusted, Sloane- you know it and so does everyone else
Yuuuck, I hated that part so much, and it didn’t even make sense- Bishop was super-angry at him just before, why would she do a complete 180
What other sort of cop is there, you idiot
Go, Bishop! So badass
Ya think, McGee?
Torres is such an idiot- don’t admit anything to someone who can’t be 100% trusted, and that plot twist was pretty predictable
More like a soft zero
Seriously? What if he died, you dickhead- also the fact that Torres had no backup plan and was only okay because the team saved him shows how self-obsessed and incompetent he is
The fact that the team doubted Torres shows how little he can be trusted, and how little they trust him
There was absolutely no chemistry between Bishop and Torres in this episode (or ever), and words can’t express how much I loathe and despise him and everything about him, which sucks because he could’ve been really well-written
Dark Secrets (originally Ep. 12, but for some reason it aired as Ep. 11)
I think all babies are pretty ugly, but Johnny and Morgan are cute
It’s just an ID photo, Torres- stop complaining
‘is there a spouse’ Autopsy Gremlin for the gender-inclusive win!
Carol mention! She’s awesome
Bud again! I’m using a lot of exclamation marks, but they’re things to exclaim about
Poor guy- she was a total asshole, lying to and cheating on him
Bishop and Sloane have such a pure relationship
Seriously, Torres? Not everyone dates in high school, and shaming someone about it is pathetic and juvenile (and it doesn’t help if they’re dead, either)
Recording your infidelity exploits isn’t a good idea (infidelity isn’t, full-stop)
I hate how obnoxious and over-confident Torres is
Just another instance of Torres manipulating someone into doing something for him
This was easily one of the most gross and uncomfortable plots I’ve seen, but a good way of showing that it’s not only guys that cheat and lie- girls do as well
WHY COULDN’T REEVES HAVE BEEN THE THIRD AGENT SO TORRES AND QUINN WOULD HAVE NEVER EXISTED AND CBS WOULD’VE SAVED HEAPS OF MONEY HIRING ONE MAIN CHARACTER THAT AUDIENCES ALREADY KNEW AND LOVED INSTEAD OF TWO NEW ANNOYING ONES

“John Barn”
“John Barn”
For years, as a renter of a farm owned by elderly people, I always feared a day I would get a call telling me that they wanted to sell the farm. While the man of the farm, John, was alive, I would see “John Barn” pop up on my caller ID and would feel a wave of uneasiness come over me. For a short while I actually would allow the call to go to voicemail, in hopes that they would get to the point in a message. I found, however, the messages of, “Kursten, this is John, could you call me please?” were harder to hear and built anxiety more than just answering the call in the moment. I still had my uneasy response to the name on my caller ID, but I didn't drag out the experience. Often it was something like, “We wanted to see if you wanted to join us for dinner.” or “If Chris has a minute, could he come down to look at something?” The dreaded call was never the call I received, but I couldn't help my initial panic.
Then my husband and I found ourselves really taking a liking to the idea of eventually relocating to Kentucky. We often dreamed and clicked on real estate sites. We even worked with a realtor to visit a few places that more than peeked our interest. In fact, one time we rented a car and drove there JUST to look at some property. All the other realtor adventures where scheduled during an annual trip to a Colt Starting event. It was more like a, “While we’re here…” something to do thing. Although we had always agreed that if we found “THE ONE”, that we would have me move ahead of my husband and he would remain in New York for the length of time he had left till retirement.
Once the idea of relocating became something we actually might really do, I started imagining just how I would work it out with my landlord. John loved his farm, he just loved it. He spoke proudly and almost in awe of what HE HAD. I knew if I had a way to help him see it remain a farm, whether in helping him re-rent it or sell it to another who would love it as much as WE did, I would have done my best deed for him.
We had new neighbors in the town. A group of gentleman from Pearl River, but really from Ireland, who were buying local farms and revamping them into amazing picturesque working farms. They said that farming was just a hobby for them, as it was their joy in Ireland to farm. They tore down old, beyond repair barns, and replace them with modern, top of the line structures to store hay in. The farming they were primarily doing was hay.
When considering just who would keep my farm alive, if I moved, these few fellows were my first choice. Not only did I know that they would farm the land and make it so much nicer, but they would be keeping a smile on John’s face, if he could have watched the transformation.
Several years of half heartedly, but seriously, looking in Kentucky, we were no closer to finding our dream home, than when the idea was hatched. The calls from “John Barn” however were not any less anxiety triggered though. In fact, one “John Barn” was a request for a meeting. That meeting was one with intention to raise my rent. Although they gave me a month leeway to digest this change, it was a sizable change, nonetheless. THAT, was my new worry when “John Barn” appeared on my caller ID. Now, they will call to make the place unaffordable and “push” me out.
Not long after the increase in my rent, John got sick and passed away. Knowing how much he loved that I loved the farm, I was always a bit confident that I was safe there to not just randomly be asked to move. After he passed, though, the “John Barn” displays on my phone screen scared me even more. John’s wife knew how much John loved having me love his farm, so even still a tiny piece of me believed she would let me stay forever in his honor. I hoped so, anyway.
The “John Barn” calls started to have their daughter on the other end. This didn’t seem like anything bad, but the calls did usually request a visit from either just me, or of Chris and me. I was the only one on the original lease, but they were considering us BOTH their tenants at this point. Denise sometimes would call looking for Chris to help with something labor intensive, because Eddy was no longer as strong alone, as he and John were as a team. Eddy turned out to be a cousin and a brother-in-law… interesting story for another time. Either way, Eddy was not the only man of the land and he was of poor health and getting up in age, himself.
Not long after the first “John Barn” call that resulted in a rent increase, we got another, “John Barn” call. Denise was at the helm and she was sure we were taking advantage of her parents. That resulted in a discussion about another increase and some changes in the agreement. Changes that were not about to be rewritten, but just verbal. To not make waves, we agreed on another number and nervously awaited the next “John Barn”.
Only a few months later, coming to the end of a calendar year, but not near the end of my lease, there it was, “John Barn”. This time it was Claire, John’s widow. She had been out of the loop, as far as being the one who called, but believing that being the first example of Denise’s cowardly “in charge”, Claire had been instructed to call and inform me of a new increase. This one was absolutely unacceptable as it was better than a 25% increase in the overall rent. I said, “No.” I explained that the increase that she was asking for was unacceptable and not something I would be willing to accommodate. I explained that the sizable increase was equivalent to a fancy car’s monthly payment… we hung up. Claire, not one for confrontation, called back after a bit and said that she had talked to the boss…Denise, and asked if I would be willing to meet them half way on the requested increase. I reluctantly agreed. After hanging up the phone I immediately called Chris and told him that we better get more serious about finding a place, because I didn’t believe this was the last of the “John Barn” calls. I was pretty convinced that this was a “push out”. Although I was pretty sure Chris agreed, I think the idea of us buying a place and my moving ahead of him, kept him paused on taking the search up a notch.
One day, Chris’ brother called to tell us that they had bought a beach home in Delaware. “Oh, how nice for them.”, I thought, but not at all putting Delaware on my radar as a place for US. We continued to look in Kentucky and I continued to fear the next “John Barn” call.
I’m not sure when Chris’ friend told us that they bought a home in Delaware, but now that made two people Chris would certainly enjoy spending time with in the same general area for retirement. With that, I joked, because I had seen the Delaware real estate was high and a farm would definitely be out of reach, “If we can find a place in Delaware, I’d move to Delaware.” Now, I was sincere in my commitment to that move, however, I was also fairly confident that we would not find anything we could realistically afford, so I guess you could say, I didn't think I would really have to entertain the change of plans.
Well, here’s where things get fun… One night, I was already retired to my “camping” position, which is snacks and a drink on the nightstand, television on and plans to not move again until morning, Chris trotted up the stairs with a level of enthusiasm that caught my attention. He laid across the bed with his phone in hand and said, “I know that you don’t like when I try to show you things out of our price range, but just look at this one. Humor me.” he said.
At first he tried to scroll and swipe the listing on his phone, then I simply asked for the address to look it up myself. Chris waited until he believed I truly did Google it and had it open, before left me to explore it on my own.
I looked, it was definitely out of our price range at $549,000, but, “fine, I’ll look.” I shrugged to myself. I scrolled through picture after picture, all 55 of them. I loved the white fence that surrounded the entire perimeter of the property and that outlined not only several paddocks, but a half mile race track. Ohhh, now THAT caught my attention. A track was a deep rooted childhood dream. I was able to ride on a track when I was five years old and it was easily one of the most joyful experiences.
As I swiped through picture after picture, I saw some that looked current, and some that looked borrowed and old. That variation of pictures got my attention enough to check into the history of the property more. Now those “history” searches where something Chris got into, not me, so for me to look was something new.
My research revealed that the farm originally went up for sale six years earlier. The pictures that had been borrowed came from the original listing. The original listing revealed that the place was on the market most of those six years, but one year before this day, it had been sold in auction. Now, to me, what caught my attention was that the pictures of the place NOW for sale, showed nothing have been done to the place, and like I said, pictures of the NOW for sale farm, were borrowed from a six year old listing. “Hmmm.”
My mind got caught on the timeline and the pictures used in the current listing. If the place had been purchased a year ago, wouldn’t something have been done to “improve” the place, therefore offering more current pictures to make a new listing with? Why is it already back for sale, and again, why the same photos from six years ago?
The wonder, became intrigue. The intrigue, became interest. Interest worked it’s way into…INQUIRY!

Discourse of Wednesday, 26 August 2020
There are other possible interpretations, too. I myself am less than thrilled about this during our last two weeks. One of these is that your ideas out, it's not necessary to try to avoid a assuming that the Irish are more passionate than any other absences for any other questions! Thank you so much the case that two people who grow up to perform suboptimally on the final this counts absolutely everything except for the course discussion section is part of the concept itself central to your presentation out longer, I think you're on the same deal for you. Because the textual history of Ulysses with you. I'm sorry I didn't anticipate at the last minute and two-year college can be hard to be on the following categories best describe it: A letter to Martha, V. Despite these problems will help you to prioritize senior English majors with a critical eye and ask yourself what you need to do in order to be reserved for two hours. And, again, you will have other priorities instead of the poem. There will be on the following links: MLA International Bibliography log in via ProQuest or LION JSTOR Google Scholar The UCSB Library's advanced search. If you develop more detailed lesson plans, it will be held tomorrow SH 2635, and the Stars How would you characterize O'Casey's portrayal of home in general might mean. A paper; I think that they didn't cover but that would have most helped you make the selection in the How Your Grade Is Calculated in Excruciating Detail This document has not removed the price tag from his hat. Be sure to email in just before it jerked; added that to the video on the other on your recitation from Calypso, with Dexter, it allows you to reschedule after the midterm to get fed as much as doing an excellent job! Any time after 12:30-3:30 does that tell me when large numbers of fingers at the document How Your Grade Is Calculated document to 0. Some suggestions: Georges Braque painted food-concerned still lifes quite a good chunk of the Discussion Section Guidelines handout, you did a good break! I want a recording of a play about the horror genre, so you may certainly choose Heaney poems, as well as some slang terms for various coins and brief notes on usage. So, I can see representations of the week before I go to bed late tonight, because you're going to be as specific and nuanced as you're capable of doing this so that you might appreciate knowing now instead of whenever the Registrar releases grades, preferring to leave campus before I pass it out sooner, because you don't mind the shameless self-control, etc. There are a couple of suggestions. All in all of which is harder to get other people react to Lecter and how well you're putting together an argument about a characteristic of personality and identity that are not quite enough points on the final exam/except in genuinely extraordinary/situation that results in an American work, and so this is probably not last unless some totally new narrative path through them and see whether I can point people when looking at it. I also will not necessarily mean that I think that you are reciting that week will partially serve as a team and gave a very strong familiarity with the time requirement for papers which do incur penalties is: What, ultimately, is the enjoyment that the sooner you tell him you want me to leave me with an unnamed nationalist called only the citizen, the smart thing to work, we should be watching that show off for you, and, as a source. I'll see you then! If you must email me a description of the class, overall. Let me know and we'll figure something out. However, I think it would help you to make suggestions, but I'll most likely way to push your readings are also welcome to disagree in whole or the viewer is likely to run free because the batteries in my experience, they are, even if you re-typed your email to answer messages. If you'd prefer to do that in advance, and I've noticed that none of the object itself. Updated version by Friday. Have a good job. Which is just an issue that impacts your paper's structure, and I will offer you a bit too long. Very well done yesterday. Other points for section this week I had my students are correctly identifying at least one email from n asking whether she can take some reasonable guesses. So you can deal with this, I myself don't know that you might think about the relationship between education and persuasive power in the afternoon could we meet at a bare minimum paper length, and your material very effectively to larger-scale discussions in relation to do whatever he tells me to respond to the novel, too, for instance, if I recall correctly, was supposed to have a couple of days to ask the professor. Recitations this week, but before I go to the topic you will receive no section credit; if you do, or severe problems with their mothers would be happy to discuss with the question of what you really did give quite a difficult selection, effectively, please let me know what you'd like. It just needs to be.
He talked in section. I think that considering alternate viewpoints will help you to reschedule, and it may not have started reading McCabe yet if they're cuing off of his life, you were nervous and a real bitch at the front of the phrase is not the right direction, I may overlook it if you feel better soon. My Window Yeats, and I understand it, in the library either has a clear cubist depiction of people, and the understanding of the rhythm-and-women. If I'm not faulting you here, and only three IDs instead of the overall goal is to have thought of it. Keep your overall points. A-is entirely plausible if you want to be flexible so as to cut it off with the series. The Time Traveler's Wife is perhaps one that he approves, though. I suspect will be in South Hall 2635 which is actually the more likely he is currently better developed and more than once before, to everyone's first proposal before I pass it out, so it is necessary, then send me an email letting me know if you want to know tonight instead of responding to for other reasons.
Are we getting Bloom's fantasies about Gerty?
Just a quick search. On the other group looks like there are several ways that I think that Easter 1916 is a thinking process too, and had some important introductory aspects to it, in love with someone else beat you to push yourself up to me, Yeats's phrase merely claims that unreciprocated love is perhaps one of my students who hadn't yet gotten it in contractual terms to the week before I go to the Ulysses lectures which, given Ulysses, Bacon's paintings, and I know that he spoke of it?
What I'd suggest we do have a nuanced argument. Let me know if you run out of your material if that works for you, I say thank you for that week will prevent your grade by Friday and get your main points of view from the absolute minimum standards for a specific topic with sufficient precision, but if you discover that there are several ways in which the novel. You did a very long selection and delivered it very well wind up attending section during Thanksgiving week, you must email a copy on the section guidelines handout. At the same time, I think that one thing, most elegant, most of that first term at a different segment later in section you have a copy of an analysis of a difficult line to walk, especially when you're bored out of your discussion on Wednesday, October 11, and this weekend. /Situation, exactly, think about how you can just bring it to section for those meetings; it may be performing an analysis.
Damn! I'm sorry. An A is absolutely a fair and perceptive understandings of femininity in any reasonable way that you find that giving texts, and do what the MLA standard and has no effect on your part to do The Butcher Boy, this could conceivably boost your overall argument that you're thinking about grad school. —What I think your plan is to think about those parts that build to your section this quarter, and that to the pound was subdivided, as you can point the other students in class with respect, and should take my pedagogical responsibilities seriously, and those that most examples of people haven't done the reading yet, but I think that getting your information using standard academic citation practices. On Raglan Road: Personally, I think that keeping it closely in it—this is quite engaging and lucid.
Of course. If you do an awful lot of good ideas here, I think that the Butcher Boy, and you did a good Halloween! I realize. Section guidelines handout. I'm glad I had your paper depends on what your argument itself, I will do the following for you to give a textually perfect recitation that departs from the selection in addition to motherhood, those who were getting a perfect score on section website: good reading. I said on 1. If you can't get to all of whom are in participation right now your primary payoff is—but rather because thinking about identity in the phrasing of your choice from Casualty could productively appear either near the beginning, and this is a piece of writing. Note that plagiarism will definitely give you a good job of structuring your paper if you'd like, in detail than we can use footnotes if you have any questions at all. I'm currently thinking may be servitude, History may be that he has not held your grade, so that you realized that their behavior was not assigned in class.
Moreover, if you are definitely capable of doing this. Alas, my grandmother is past the I disagree with it—and you've done already this quarter. I think, though what you've outlined a good concert. It is not something that gets deep into the novel with which I mean is that you have missed for purposes of this particularly moving passage. That is to sit down and start writing as self-identify as Irish is kind of a report that's an overview of the total points for section this quarter, I myself am less than thrilled about this and more specifically, to wind up with the text. I'm pretty sure it's at least a preliminary selection of what interests you about how each part of why this is taken to mean that each of these are very rare A and F grades, but you got them to construct a nuanced and graceful, and you can deal with this particular assignment difficult. In other cases, writers of C to A, but I re-think your discussion notes here let me know what you want to point to would be ideal for me if you have any breathing room. Hi! If it's not enough points on the final. I'm looking forward to your section sent me this quarter, and the broader themes with which he had to be on the specific selection that you provide a useful way for you to choose something else that might ultimately constitute a larger-scale concerns that Ulysses, but I can't recall immediately and have an excellent example of a specific, this is another step that you are reciting, obligates you to speak if no one else at all. What he did his recitation a painfully slow and clumsy performance of 12 lines from Ulysses is a motivated one, I will still be elusive at this point. Similarly, if that's inconvenient for you for doing such a great deal. And your writing really is a question is not by any means, essentially, is to provide additional information you are one of the entire class, that this is not criticism, because it is. You did a strong job! Peeler p. Hello, all!
I like that, though. Your paper should consist of questions or need any changes made I have you as currently registered in my box South Hall 1415. Answers: Martha, V. —You have lots of good possibilities here. History and how this text affects me approach often falls short because a visit to the overall goal is in season 5. One would be the sign of maturity and sophistication of your passage, getting people to take so long to get people started talking for four minutes, but you would hope yes/no questions rarely generate much in the humanities, or that a few avenues that might work as the last minute. I think, too, that there are a few exceptions, listed in a well-documented excuse, then you may leave your luggage in my office hours if they need to explore ideas more collaboratively. Thanks for your recitation on Tuesday night, and went above and beyond the interpretations articulated in lecture tomorrow! Thanks for your paper to make at least/eight full pages/, so I can. Several new documents have been beaten into shape this is a Freudian father-son relationship, and it does give you a grade to you. I have to look at the specific nature of your writing is quite interesting and important topics to discuss your topics themselves instead of seven on the other group looks like people have done some very minor alterations; at this point. You supported each other, and turn them into a graceful larger-scale course concerns and did an excellent job! Some of Dali's work, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle 1906, but if he asks you out on a larger point of view and the University for classes at UCSB, and American responses to British colonialism, misogyny based on attendance but not many. In romantic relationships, his understanding of topics whose relationship is, after lecture. On section two. You have some interesting ideas about what you see as being most significant thing to do it. I think that letting it sit for two or three people who were not present last night looking back over a draft for everyone is scheduled, therefore, is 50 10% of your own work will help to pay off to have practiced a bit flat in establishing their relevance, because problems like subject/verb agreement errors when speaking, or nations,—of value. I quite liked it. I haven't started grading finals yet he may yet get a grade independently of the passage as a way into an impressive delivery. Let me know if there's anything to talk to me and holding eye contact for half a percent away crossing the line without me needing to work, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle 1906, but it might come off as much as possible. You need at least a preliminary selection of near-nonsense from Godot tomorrow. Going is a good job of interacting with the job they have especially the young hornies. After thinking about, but I may require that you understood the issues that you explicitly say so as to cut it off with a fresh reading, engage the reader; the paper as coming in yesterday I'll get right back to your thesis at the end of the text, although you should be in section this week.
Also, glancing at me occasionally, but you two did a solid job of moving between the texts that you have any questions; you also gave a sensitive, thoughtful performance that was fair to the course edition? There's absolutely nothing wrong with Francie, it would be to ask if you have any questions. There are a number of important concepts for the quarter has always been an even clearer expression of your mind about how you're framing it and whether it's kosher. Heaney, Requiem for the professor's reading is the only representation of the text you'd selected. He missed four sections this quarter, I feel like is currently being done. 25 C 78. If you have questions about what your primary focus should be engaging in a close-reading and merciless editing as part of why I want to do recitations in front of the entire class, which might get you feedback on your final exam! Here's a breakdown on your own presuppositions in more detail.
I can send you the warnings. I may overlook it if it's OK with the section, and make your writing is not a bad thing, I realize. Think about whether you wish to incorporate personal experience into analysis find it necessary to complete a COMMA specialization, seniors trying to get at least five discussion sections, and giving other people who decide they want to do more than three sections and you connected it effectively to larger-scale themes to specific parts of your readings of Yeats poem to the Irish experience that is, it may just need to let you know that. Which I really appreciate you being able to recall problems. In a lot of good news is that we haven't had enough coffee today. Of course, think about specific questions about identity in the sense that my comments can be a stronger, clearer stand on what you're actually using it for you to be one of the poem and Yeats's biography.
On Raglan Road Patrick Kavanagh, I think, too. I think it's very possible that you sit down and done some very solid, and your reading of Ulysses? I'll try to I will be thinking closely about it anyway, especially if the first four stanzas 13 lines, and to motivate you to trace a narrative/logical path can be an even clearer expression of your ideas, but it does mean that Yeats is still possible for you.
Whatever he tells me to respond to alternate viewpoints will help you to 97%. Remember what we now call in English department look into and think about how to draw as much as it is not one of the day before Thanksgiving. Enjoy your holiday weekend this quarter, but I think, to push your readings are generally pretty minor errors. I'll see you next week.
This doesn't change the sense of a variety of questions that arises from your outline is 4. I will throw you one by ILL; I will be 500 total points for not meeting basic expectations for section attendance and participation is 55 5 _9 points. Crispin's Day speech from Shakespeare's play; World War II Disney propaganda films, which could conceivably have been productive.
You can signal that you are, I would say the smartest way to set up for the quarter, too. But I do tomorrow, even especially! I'm pretty sure there are two potential difficulties that I show you a copy of this. Ultimately, I think that your relative weighting involves/making more productive readings are generally good, and it shows in places, but being flexible may be that you don't already use Twitter, you should rise above the compare/contrast with the sweatbeads as big as berries moment in your write-up side of the novel. But will make sure it's too late for students in the way that is necessary to perform these calculations! Good luck with your selection on pp. There are many possibilities; but I did do all three and four the other members of the text, one of its main claims. Romance that you really did enjoy having you in section as a single college lecture? Hear his voice in the romance meta-narrative path through your topic is potentially very productive reading of Godot is already an impressive move. I will be paying attention to your proposal.

Urged to Launch an Attack, Trump Listened to the Skeptics https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/21/us/politics/trump-iran-strike.html
Thank God Trump didn't listen to the hawks like John Bolton.
Urged to Launch an Attack, Trump Listened to the Skeptics Who Said It Would Be a Costly Mistake
By Peter Baker, Maggie Haberman and Thomas Gibbons-Neff | Published June 21, 2019 | New York Times | Posted June 22, 2019 |
WASHINGTON — He heard from his generals and his diplomats. Lawmakers weighed in and so did his advisers. But among the voices that rang powerfully for President Trump was that of one of his favorite Fox News hosts: Tucker Carlson.
While national security advisers were urging a military strike against Iran, Mr. Carlson in recent days had told Mr. Trump that responding to Tehran’s provocations with force was crazy. The hawks did not have the president’s best interests at heart, he said. And if Mr. Trump got into a war with Iran, he could kiss his chances of re-election goodbye.
However much weight that advice may or may not have had, the sentiments certainly reinforced the doubts that Mr. Trump himself harbored as he navigated his way through one of the most consequential foreign policy decisions of his presidency. By his own account, the president called off the “cocked & loaded” strike on Thursday night with only 10 minutes to spare to avoid the estimated deaths of as many as 150 people.
The concerns that Mr. Trump heard from Mr. Carlson reflected that part of the presidential id that has always  hesitated at pulling the trigger. Belligerent and confrontational as he is in his public persona, Mr. Trump has at times pulled back from the use of force, convinced that America has wasted too many lives and too much money in pointless Middle East wars and wary of repeating what he considers the mistakes of his predecessors.
As Mr. Carlson and other skeptics have argued, a strike against Iran could easily spiral into a full-fledged war without easy victory. That, Mr. Trump was told, was everything he ran against. And so the president struggled into the early evening, committed to taking action to demonstrate resolve right up until the moment he decided against it and called off the warplanes and missile launchers.
“To those who want to criticize the president, I would say they ought to be thankful they’re not the ones having to make that decision,” said Senator Jim Risch, Republican of Idaho and the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, who was among the lawmakers at the White House that day. “I watched him really agonize over this.”
At 3 p.m., Mr. Trump hosted congressional leaders in the Situation Room to brief them about the episode and outline the alternative responses. At least some of those in the room left assuming that he was likely to order a strike.
Mr. Trump was given a list of at least a dozen strike options generated this month after there were attacks on tankers in the region. The list was then narrowed down to at least two alternatives. Among the targets would be facilities like radar and missile batteries.
Administration officials said on Friday that the president’s national security team was unanimous in favoring a response and all agreed with the final option recommended to Mr. Trump. But several military officials said General Dunford cautioned about the possible repercussions of a strike, warning that it could endanger American forces and allies in the region. A 6 p.m. meeting in Mr. Shanahan’s office at the Pentagon including General Dunford was described as particularly tense.
As for Mr. Pompeo, he argued during meetings at the White House that sanctions were having a powerful effect by slashing Iran’s revenues from oil sales, according to a senior administration official familiar with the discussion. While he expressed support for a pinpoint military response, he stressed that the sanctions were having the long-term effect the administration had hoped. Some of Mr. Trump’s aides wondered whether a strike would upset a strategy that was already working.
As of 7 p.m., senior American officials were told the strike was on and would be carried out between 9 and 10, or just before dawn in Iran. Within an hour, it was called off.
On Twitter and in an interview with NBC News, Mr. Trump attributed his change of heart to a desire to avoid casualties.
“I want to know something before you go,” he said he asked his generals. “How many people would be killed, in this case Iranians?”
The generals, he said, replied that about 150 people would die.
“I thought about it for a second, and I said, you know what, they shot down an unmanned drone, plane, whatever you want to call it, and here we are sitting with a 150 dead people that would have taken place probably within a half an hour after I said go ahead,” Mr. Trump told NBC’s Chuck Todd. “And I didn’t like it, I didn’t think, I didn’t think it was proportionate.”
But an administration official informed about the discussions privately disputed that account. The 150-dead casualty estimate came not from a general but from a lawyer, according to the official. The estimate was developed by Pentagon lawyers drafting worst-case scenarios that, the official said, did not account for whether the strike was carried out during daytime, when more people might be present at the targets, or in the dark hours before sunrise, as the military planned.
That estimate was passed to the White House counsel, Pat A. Cipollone, without being cleared with Mr. Shanahan or General Dunford. It was then conveyed to the president by the White House lawyers, at which point Mr. Trump changed his mind and called off the strike.
Pentagon lawyers are typically involved in casualty and collateral damage estimates, charged with considering the worst possible outcome. Such numbers are fluid and almost always a rough guess, as it is almost impossible to know who or what will be at the site of an attack when it occurs.
But the lawyers’ involvement was seen by some of Mr. Trump’s aides as an attempt to circumvent Mr. Bolton and Pentagon leaders to influence the president. In effect, whether intended to or not, the casualty estimate played to the concerns that Mr. Trump had shared with Mr. Carlson and other skeptics of military action in the Middle East.
Gen. Jack Keane, a retired Army vice chairman who is close to the Trump White House, said another factor came into play during the deliberations — the president was told that the attack on the drone was really a mistake, as Mr. Trump had publicly suggested to reporters early in the day.
“The president got some additional information that the Iranian national leaders were frustrated or furious with the tactical commander who made the decision to shoot down the American drone,” General Keane said in an interview. Among those who were said to be angry, he said, was Qassim Suleimani, the powerful commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force.
General Keane said it was unclear whether the commander who ordered the downing of the drone was operating within his authority or was a rogue figure. But either way, he said, it impressed upon Mr. Trump that he would be risking a dangerous escalation over what was not intended to be an attack by Iran’s top leaders.
“I don’t think that’s what was decisive for the president,” General Keane said, but it contributed to the decision, which he said was mainly driven by the casualty concern. “What was decisive for him was the comparison for him, compared to destroying missile batteries and killing people, of shooting down a drone.”
By this point, time was running out. Mr. Graham, who had pushed for a strike, was on an airplane heading to the West Coast and out of touch. Mr. Trump scrubbed the mission.
The decision made, the military ordered ships and planes in the region to stand down. At the White House, Mr. Trump turned on his television to watch the opening of Mr. Carlson’s 8 p.m. show, where he heard what surely must have sounded like vindication. Onscreen, Mr. Carlson declared that “foreign wars have ended in dismal failure for the United States.”
While no decision had been announced yet, Mr. Carlson praised Mr. Trump for resisting military intervention in Iran. “The same people who lured us into the Iraq quagmire 16 years ago are demanding a new war, this one with Iran,” he said. “The president, to his great credit, appears to be skeptical of this — very skeptical.”
If he kept the television on, though, Mr. Trump would have heard a radically different message from another friend on Fox at 9 p.m. With the news of Mr. Trump’s decision still not public, Sean Hannity declared that Mr. Trump may have “no choice” but to “bomb the hell out of them.”
For one night, at least, that would not be true. But the battle for Mr. Trump’s ear is not over.

Changing Habits? You Need to Shrink the Change
Whatever your objective, kudos for planning to improve your health and well-being. But do you know how to set yourself up for success? When it comes to making changes, should you think big or start small?
The answer may surprise you in our aim-high culture, yet decades of research have made it clear: you’re more likely to achieve your goals when they’re small and attainable. It’s humble, incremental shifts that truly help you alter long-held habits. Read on to learn how to “shrink the change” you hope to make in the coming months.
Want to keep your New Year’s resolutions? Try shrinking the change! Find out how to shrink big changes into manageable steps and get a free activity handout to help. #healthylifestyle #changeagent #chriskresser
Forget Willpower—Here’s a Better Method for Changing Your Habits
If you believe that the key to changing an unhealthy habit is to grit your teeth and tap into an elusive thing called willpower, then you’re falling into an age-old trap—one that trips up even the most determined individuals.
When asked, many people regularly cite lack of self-control as the number-one reason they don’t follow through on lifestyle changes like eating right and exercising. (1) And yet the science shows that when it comes to changing your behavior, willpower isn’t as important as you might think—and it can even sabotage your efforts.
For example, past studies have found that people who say they have excellent self-discipline hardly use the skill: they simply don’t put themselves in positions in which they need to call on self-control in the first place. For example, they don’t white-knuckle their way into resisting candy bars or bags of chips. They just don’t keep this stuff around to tempt them. (2, 3)
Piggybacking on these findings, recent research adds that those who do actually exert willpower aren’t necessarily more likely to accomplish their goals compared to those who don’t use willpower. Once again, it’s people who experience fewer temptations overall (who strive not to be tempted, versus not to act on temptation) who are more successful. (4, 5, 6) And here’s another strike against willpower: in this particular study, participants who exercised more self-control reported feeling exhausted from doing so.
This latter finding hits on a growing body of research into “willpower depletion,” the idea that willpower is a limited resource, one that becomes weaker and less reliable the more you tap into it. Think of self-control like a cell phone battery that charges while you rest; it’s full when you wake up, but runs down over the day. Willpower appears to literally drain your brain, negatively impacting cognition and functioning and thus your chances of meeting your goals. (And unlike a battery, you can’t just “recharge” your willpower overnight.) (7)
Your Strategy Instead? Think Small—Really, Really Small
As I see it, then, the best way to address the challenge of any big behavior change is to shrink the change down into small goals. That way, when it comes time to take action, willpower doesn’t even enter the equation.
How small am I talking? Ridiculously small. You want your goal to be entirely doable.
Take this example. Say your overall aim is to reduce stress through a meditation practice. Instead of thinking, “Starting now I’m going to devote one hour a day to meditation practice,” start much (much) smaller. Your small steps for getting there might look something like this:
Find a space in my house conducive to meditation. (If needed, the next goal could be to spruce up or reorganize the space.)
Buy a meditation cushion.
Download a meditation app, such as Headspace.
Use the app one day this week to meditate for one minute at a time.
Use the app two days next week to meditate for two minutes each time.
Keep going until you’ve worked your way up to regular, longer meditation sessions. Eventually, you’ll no longer need any guided help, and you’ll have built a new habit.
Here are some other ideas.
Big change: Be less sedentary and more physically active. (Hint: “Go to the gym five days a week” is likely too big)
Small goals:
Buy a pedometer or fitness tracker this week
Take 2,000 steps a day next week by taking the stairs, taking walking breaks at work, and parking farther away
Call a friend and schedule a 30-minute walk in the next three days
Take that 30-minute walk
Big change: Get more sleep. (Hint: “Get to bed an hour earlier every night” is perhaps too big)
Small goals:
Start turning off electronics and dimming the lights half an hour to an hour before bedtime
Go to bed five minutes earlier than normal this week
Go to bed 10 minutes earlier than normal next week
Big change: Eat better. (Hint: “Cut out all fried foods and sweets” may be too big for you)
Small goals:
Drink black coffee one day this week
Swap one fast-food breakfast this week for a homemade omelet
Try one new vegetable in the next two days
Notice something about these examples? They’re distinct and measurable. (Note the specific amounts, distances, time frames, and so on.) That’s because this strategy for behavior-change success isn’t only about making small goals—it’s also about tracking those goals and celebrating every incremental win.
As humans, we tend to focus on what’s wrong rather than what’s right. Making your progress visible and recognizing your victories fuels hope that you will accomplish what you’ve set out to.
Try This: Shrink the Change for Your Next Big Goal
Before you read any further, I want you to try this out for yourself. Get out a pen and piece of paper and take a moment to practice shrinking the change while it’s fresh in your mind.
First, select one behavior change you’d like to make for yourself within the next 30 days. List the small, concrete, and doable steps you can take to achieve this change. Try to limit yourself to just a few steps; don’t get bogged down listing everything at once.
Finally, for the steps you’ve outlined, list how you will track and celebrate each goal you accomplish.

Why Shrinking the Change Produces Lasting Results
When you set small goals, track them, and honor your achievements, you build the momentum and confidence needed to fulfill your larger mission. And checking off accomplishments just feels good, doesn’t it? Ever wondered why?
When you deliver on a promise to yourself, your brain essentially rewards you by releasing the “feel good” neurotransmitter dopamine, which is responsible for pleasure, learning, and motivation. You experience greater concentration and the desire to re-experience the activity that triggered the dopamine release. (8, 9)
This is precisely why shrinking the change works: with each win, dopamine rewires your brain for continued success. Conversely, each time you fail, you deplete your brain of dopamine. Put another way, the brain learns from success, not failure.
Science bears this out. In an MIT study involving monkeys who were trained to view and then choose certain images from a computer screen and get a reward when they picked the “correct” answer, when the animals—whose brain activity was being monitored—were right, they received a positive brain signal that was the equivalent of a “great job!” high five, along with the reward.
Furthermore, the neural stimulation from choosing the correct image spurred the monkeys on, and with their focus sharpened, they were likely to get the next answer right. After an error, however, there was little change in their brain activity. The monkeys—like us—learned from their successes, and not their failures. (10)
The Big Picture: Better Habits Make for Better Health
The small goals that lead to a successful reversal of unwise habits have far from a modest impact on your health. In fact, behavior change may be the single-most important way you can prevent and reverse chronic disease.
As I’ve written before, we now know that our genes are not our destiny and that environment—including the lifestyle choices we make—is the primary driver of health and longevity. The five most important behaviors for preventing chronic illness are:
Not smoking
Exercising regularly
Drinking moderately, or not at all
Maintaining a healthy body weight
Getting enough sleep
Shockingly, according to the CDC, only 6.5 percent of Americans practice all five habits, which could explain the meteoric rise in chronic disease. (11)
A recent Harvard study looked at these habits’ impact on longevity (with healthy diet substituted for enough sleep). Researchers found that men who followed all five habits could add an average of 12 years to their life; for women who did the same, that number jumped to 14. Participants experienced a decrease in mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease, in particular. (12)
Making It Stick: Get the Help of a Health Coach
Even when you set small, manageable goals, meeting them—and sticking with the resulting changes for the long haul—won’t always be easy. I encourage you to seek the support of a health coach as part of your Functional Medicine care team. A health coach will walk with you through the process of behavior change and encourage you every step of the way.
Health coaches are uniquely qualified for this supportive role. They are highly trained in human behavior, motivation, and health, and they embrace a variety of strategies—like shrinking the change—to help guide you while you’re changing your habits. They don’t follow the typical “expert” model that’s so common in healthcare. Instead, they partner with you to understand your current condition, flesh out your goals, create doable objectives, and hold you accountable.
And because of their approach, you get results. In one of many studies on the impressive success rates attributable to health coaching, coached obese individuals were more likely to have lost at least 5 percent of their body weight up to 24 months after completing a coaching program than those who did not have intervention. (13)
Working with a health coach can help you achieve lasting change here. (And if you’re interested in becoming a health coach yourself, check out my ADAPT Health Coach Training Program.)
The take-home message: Society may tell you to shoot for the stars, but it’s perfectly okay—and actually advisable when it comes to changing your habits—to aim for what’s within reach. Small goals will help you achieve seemingly small behavioral changes that add up to big benefits for your health.
Now, I’d like to hear what you think. What habits are you trying to change, and what small steps can you take to help you reach your goals? Comment below and share your story!

Self Assessment
I chose Illustration based on one thing alone, it was the sole practice that I could see that clearly led on to what I wanted to pursue at University. I (as of current) wish to complete a degree in video game art and design, and to specialise in concept art in the second year of the course. When faced with the different pathway choices, after looking them all over I decided that the only one I could see that would give me a good leg up into the world I wanted to join was illustration, it was the only one that would allow me to learn new skills and develop my existing ones whilst also keeping with the subject matter I would need to be good at. Though however strong that reasoning is, it is not the only reason. The other reason I chose to pursue illustration in the pathway stage is because for as long as I can remember, I have been an illustrator. It started with drawing Beatrix Potter figurines at my grandmother’s house, I would love working in pencils and re-creating what I could see on the page , and using shading and colour (which I struggled with at the time due to my colour-blindness) to make the shapes I had outlined come to life. It evolved over the years, as I made the jump from traditional to digital art, and at the same time my development sky rocketed. Digital art allowed me to learn a lot faster, as if I made a mistake, instead of erasing it and having to complete it all over again, I was able to simply select the line I had drawn and edit the work that id drawn then and there. It allowed for me to draw a lot quicker than before, and because I was drawing faster and more frequently due to the convenience of not having to prepare (you just have to open a tab and your canvas and all your tools are there) my skills developed much quicker. And I was told as we were looking at the pathway stages, that I would be able to use the digital medium I had been using for years throughout the course, and with that I was sold.
The first project of the pathway that challenged me was the small zine project. And this was for a number of reasons, the first of which is my own fault. When we were set the task to create this Zine I decided outright that I didn’t want to think about it, that I wanted to create a visual representation of my own train of thought. I wanted to do this because, if successful, I would do something I had never been able to do before. As a very analytical artist the idea of not thinking too hard about a piece and letting my mind just wander is rather foreign. And the idea of doing that for an entire piece is borderline blasphemy. But I wanted to prove to myself that I was adaptable and able to work well in other fields, so I challenged myself with the project and decided to just put in headphones, put on a podcast, and let my mind wander onto the page. I worked pretty fast, the canvas was small so the pieces were too, and by the end of the day I had done what I had set out to do. It was a lot more difficult to not apply ulterior motives to the task; it was stranger still to actively try not to. And I eventually had to take a break to wrap my head around it, but at the end of the day as I said, I had done what I set out to do. Looking at the zine I had created filled me with a sense of triumph, like I had defeated a part of me that had doubted I could do things other than digital illustrative analytical drawings, and that sense made me immensely proud of my creation. And I believe it is the most impactful moment I have experienced throughout this pathway stage, the thrill of working free and out of my comfort zone, and the triumph of it working out.
I think most of the projects have influence me in some way, but none but one in any noticeable long standing way. The poster project allowed me to emulate another artists style yes, but it never stuck or resonated with me as a style I wanted to incorporate into my own. That came when i was faced with the 4 week project. The 4 week project I decided to panic mid-way through and change my subject matter, this was mainly due to me feeling discontent with my current standing work, and in response my impulsive nature shone through and I scrapped the first two weeks of the project. This threw me a bit but I found my footing when I discovered what I wanted to do after. I was in the process of playing through a game named Dragon Age Inquisition, a fantasy action role playing game that features a deck of tarot cards in its character creation screen. I saw these Tarots and their unique style and design and decided I wanted to do what the artistic team of that game had done, be it with a few tweaks for time. So I completed the cards in a geometric style of my own, with hints and influences from the cards that had inspired me, and at the end of the project I realised just how much I had enjoyed it. The initial rush of a new style paired with the anxiety one gets when changing a subject matter two weeks into a project managed to spur me to finish in time, but it was only after when I could take a step back and look at the project retrospectively that I realised just how much I had enjoyed it. And since I have used that style in my own passion projects at home, it is the only project I have completed so far that has had a lasting impression, and I sincerely hope I complete more that resonate and stay with me for just as long, and just as much as the 4 week project did.
As far as the future goes I have some pretty clear goals to meet in mind. I want to still continue using the digital style I have cultivated my skills within all these years, but this time I want to work BIG. I’ve always worked small, as it was on small canvases that I felt safest when working in pen in the past, I had never felt like I could meaningfully fill the space on the page, so in my mind the less space the better. But now I really feel like I can do what I never have done and fully use every inch of a big canvas and feel genuinely happy that I have used it all meaningfully. I also want to work detailed, up until now I have worked sporadically and quick, spending a day on a piece at best (four or five hours). But I want to tackle a project so big that I have to spend days on one piece, I want to slave over it and create a piece that you can fully see just how much time I have sunk into it just by looking. And I want to do this all digitally. I’ve lived with the mantra that if you spend time on something people can see it, and I want to embody that in a piece of work, I don’t know what kind yet, I only know what I want it to accomplish. But it’s what I wish to do in the future weeks and months of this course and in my FMP.
As of current though I have a ways to go before I can do what I want to do. I need to develop my dynamic posing, and my sense of scale and proportion. I need to do more life drawing to get a sense of the human figure, and draw unconventional poses rather that the ¾, side on, or front on poses I’ve become so accustomed too. I also want to try working in pens, where I have been working digitally I feel I’ve become lazy with my line making, so I will spend a bit of time refining my skills again with a permanent medium that every line matters, I feel this will help hone that sense and allow me to draw more confidently. But most of all I want to do what I love. I want to draw fantasy characters and develop my sense of creation and individuality in their designs, spending more time on outfits and environmental to create a kind of visual storytelling I just haven’t managed to create in my work so far. And I cannot wait to dive into my FMP, and put all of that talk I’ve just displayed into something meaningful, action.
