Ian McKellen's Magneto could say "I've Been At The Mercy Of Men Just Following Orders. Never Again."
But Michael Fassbender's Magneto could never pull off "We love what you've done with your hair"

Watching interviews from the olden days and finding gold.
Finding out that Hugh Jackman having to "be the alarm clock" for James Mcavoy and Micheal Fassbender because of how hung over they were is simply hilarious.
Also finding out that James slammed them into a Lexus (only doing 12 miles an hour) got thrown 10 feet, immediately got up and looked back to see Micheal (who was once on the back of the golf cart) now sitting upright in the drivers seat after smacking his head on the seat and got a gash scar on his leg from it- Only to start "maniacally laughing" and literally RAN AWAY once blamed, Is also so young cherik coded.
These crack heads definitely were getting into some nonsense trouble.
Micheal saying he thought the scene from the strip club with charles and angel "I thought we looked like the two old men from the muppets"
Micheal calling the x men "Charlie- boy's kids". Perfection.
Also the way James looks at him when ever Micheal just bursts out into song is so pure. The "wow this idiot... thats my idiot." Glitter in his eye.
James finding out that Micheal isn't american by driving up to him on a vespa, and screaming at him in his normal voice is so funny.
"Fuck you erik-"
"His names derik."
"How long has he name been derik?"
"Since the begining- you just keep calling him that."
Even the bloopers of Hank and Charles are such a vibe.
"Hold your breath but make it look like you aren't holding your breath" Man these leather suits gave them so many problems fr.
"I already said im not a man. I cant jump this damn wall!" I think storm says as the director goes right up to hugh and is like "Litsen when I say so youre gonna jump this wall" and hughs like idk about that mate. "Ill be talking to you through the big microphone that everyone hates" says the director. "Were gonna take the batteries out if it" says someone else.
Hughs stunt double: *screams*
Hugh: Let it go sis
Hughs stunt double: *dies*
Something about how the directors talk to hugh and how hugh speaks directly to multiple set members makes me feel like half the cuts they had to make was because of him joking and being a silly theater kid LMAO
Everyone randomly dancing all the time, including old magneto.
James too. The blooper of him violently killing a bug on the chess set in the plane scene is so "insane charles" iconic.
Also poor Evan peters. He kept slipping everywhere. And theres so many shots where hes just standing there in charater getting absolutely soaked while charles and Logan do some ridiculous shit lol. Him at panels is so awkward too. Describe your character " hes a little weird uhhhh hes fast. Hes quick. He talks fast he runs fast..... uhhh its like at the atm waiting for the bastard infront of you to move out the way" "I wish my dad magneto could try these 😀" "thats my dad"
Evan also wishes they would have done the scene in apocalypse where he tells him hes his son and all the metal in the room drops. Im someone has written this already but that sounds great.
"THATS MY SON, QUICKSILVER!" Shouts Micheal multiple times. "My boy!" "Its in the genes darling." "I had him when I was very young 😁"

I'll be seeing Deadpool & Wolverine in a couple hours from now, but I want to say a couple things about the whole X-Men movies first. I don't want to call this a eulogy, but rather a salute to the films.
I started this retrospective not just to get ready for D&W, but to give me an idea of what these films mean now, especially since this is the year of the X-Men, or I guess "The Year of X" with not just the release of D&W, but with X-Men '97, the relaunches of X-Men comics post-Krakoa, and the release of the MVC Arcade Collection all within the same year. And throughout this retrospective, I give these movies the respect that they earn in how they were made before and during the MCU.
The original trilogy were one of the biggest movie series in the 2000s and made the idea on how superhero films can be grounded and serious in the modern day, for better and for worse. And the films after have ranged from ok to some of the best in the genre that also took risks in how they adapt the source material, like with one of the first R-rated superhero movies with Deadpool and how it became a huge success, to having a more serious, sad but beautiful western type feel film that is Logan, and even a brief trip to horror with The New Mutants.
Another shoutout to the great performances in them as well, with Stewart, McKellen, McAvoy, Fassbender, Reynolds, and of course Jackman for giving iconic performances that people always think of when it comes to thinking about Professor X, Magneto, Deadpool, and Wolverine.
There were some problems with them be it with productions problem from the studio, delays, buyouts, or Bryan Singer, or just with the films themselves especially with The Last Stand. However, I want to give my respect to these films in how they contribute to the X-Men as a whole. So, thank you X-Men films and here's to seeing how the future of the team will become. Here's to many more!

Goofing around with Mags
Tumblr media
Hey Magneto, do you think the Disney MCU reboot of x-men will even be a thousandth as good as X-men 97 is ?
Tumblr media
Hey Magneto, what do you think about the Xorn retcon ?
Tumblr media
Hey Magneto, how old was Anna Marie when you two boned for the first time ?
Tumblr media
Hey Max, do you prefer Sir Ian McKelllen of Michael Fassbender ?
Tumblr media
Hey Mags, what do we say to the haters that hate the idea of Spider-Gwen being trans ?
Tumblr media
You heard it here first folks, Mags says #transrights
Hey Magnus, do you mind if I call you "Daddy" ?
Tumblr media
I'm very sad there was a video game episode without anyone saying "X-men ! Welcome...to DIE"
Tumblr media
Hey Magsy honey, I'm magnetically attracted to YOU :3💙 Would you make me miss Lehnsherr ?
Tumblr media
Seriously though, the only character that ever did the whole "welcome to die" X-men arcade joke was...*sigh* DEADPOOL.
Tumblr media
My man, I hate the fact the only x-universe movie I'm even remotely looking forward to is...*sigh* DEADPOOL 3.... Not a great feeling.
Tumblr media
Like I know the joke I'm doing right now is TOTALLY something he would do, but...um..I sorta..you know...hate my humor. So, like...well you know.
Tumblr media
Thanks for hearing me out man. You're a real pal Magsy baby. I mean it. May I hug you ?
Tumblr media
How are YOU ? Any plans to liberate the mutant race in the near future ? How is the daughter ? DaughterS ? I forget with all these retcons.
Tumblr media
Oh and Pietro too I guess.
Tumblr media
Hey Erik, do you think I'll ever get tired of this bit ?
Tumblr media
Yo, Mags baby, how do you say "Shut up" in Korean ?

Character meme: Magneto 2, 7, 8, 22, 25
Oh Magneto! It's been so long since I got to ramble about him, thank you for asking :)
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
The time he spent as a hospital orderly in Haifa. There's something so humble about it and it stands out in his job resume.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
Most of the fandom loves exploring his relationship with his family and with jewishness in a way the canon doesn't do enough of (last time i checked, i haven't read comics in a while). I love that they do both those things because they're two of my favourite aspects of his character.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
I hate when fandom draws exclusively from X Men First Class and the following films. I liked that movie at the time (less so the following ones) but it's also very flawed and it's a very specific version of the character that doesn't fall into line with my favorite bits from the comics character. For details about his experiences during the Shoah for exemple, I much prefer Greg Pak's Magneto : Testament as a source. Also I have some issues with Fassbender.
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
I feel this converges with the previous questions. Another thing I like in fics is how often he's drawn as a queer character. I feel canon is very close to doing that with Xavier and Erik's relationship but definitly not quite, and in this case, I think it really adds a great dimension to him! Especially in old fanfics which envision Ian McKellen as Magneto, there's a quality to exploring the history of queer identity through him (and Xavier too) which is often fascinating in fanfics.
Something I don't like is when fanfics forget he's Jewish! You'd think it wouldn't happen, but people want to write fluffy Christmas fics about Jewish characters all the time.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
It's kind of hard to remember because my first meeting with the character was from the old '90s cartoon. I remember about him and Xavier hanging out in the savage land during what seems forever. I was very intrigued by him because he was a villain (or at least introduced and drawn as one) yet he always seemed to end up on the side of the good guys by chance. That really drew me to him!!
Now I think very similar things. I think he really manages to be one of the most iconic anti villain of modern culture in a way that isn't always flawless but is striking and fascinating. If modern comics didn't betray that either, he's also singularly a character who used to be a villain who now stands as a more complex and shadowed role without usually being drawn as fully "redeemed" but definitly hasn't been a proper antagonist either for a very long time. And that's awesome. Also I just really love him as a character, his voice, his gruffness, his tendency towards grandiose statement and his sarcasm. He's just one of my favorite character of all time!

Every now and again, I think about this exchange of dialog from the original X-Men film:
"Does it ever wake you in the middle of the night? The feeling that one day they will pass that foolish law or one just like it, and come for you? And your children?" "It does, indeed." "What do you do, when you wake up to that?" "I feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who comes to that school... looking for trouble."
Specifically, the impact it had on the other films as a tone setter (right down to Kamen's "Checkmate", his X-Men theme). How every single film either never lived up to it, or constantly tried to replicate this scene not once, but multiple times with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender (to no avail).
I was never all that interested in making literal "the war" Magneto talked about (like the films seemed to be). Even as a tweenager, I sort've understood that his whole spiel was more about the dread of being harmed and knowing it will happen than anything else (just based on my own understanding of anti-blackness as a kid). Not necessarily something that would come to fruition in a literal war.
It also frames him as the instigator of a lot of shit (i.e. mass murder as a solution to discrimination), versus Xavier's approach which is almost always about deescalation and aversion to conflict.

I’m back ;) I’m the anon who loved your x-men apocalypse animation especially. Really enjoyed your latest one as well! Gorgeous animation - loved the Jean Grey/Phoenix animation! The tiktok of Erik imagining/sitting down and taking to Peter is also a fave of mine - it did make me sad about the lack of Evan Peters - Michael Fassbender/ Magneto - Quicksilver scenes in the movies. Their dynamic could have been so great!
Yes, Dark Phoenix was a real mess. I do still absolutely adore the space scene though - it looks amazing and seeing the x-mens’ powers work together is just everything. Wish there was a lot more of that across basically all the film tbh. Loved seeing Quicksilver’s abilities in zero g! But despite how much I love that scene I can’t say that the movie is good. Honestly the frequent and unnecessarily large time skips generally bothers me - they robbed us of seeing the characters develop. I also can’t believe that Peter wouldn’t tell Erik for almost 10 years after the apocalypse incident.
I did try to brain storm a few ways of Erik finding out about Peter that could potentially be dramatically/visually interesting? One of my ideas was that for some reason, maybe due to Erik seeing red due to grief of losing Raven, Erik is wreaking absolute havoc and is trying to kill Jean. But the x-men have some sort of plan or just needs to freeze Erik so they can then stop Jean without killing her. And the scene would be Peter using his speed to try to get the helmet off Erik so that Charles could communicate with/or freeze Erik. And then because of Erik’s vast power he would be able to stop Peter in his tracks (similar to Jean in the film) and there would be a scene (similar to your animation) of him “grabbing” Peter in the air - throwing him up against the wall of the train(possibly?) to stop him, angry and pissed off and there would be this moment of Peter bracing himself genuinely worried he’s about to be killed - and Charles or someone else would panicked about what Erik might be about to do as he is blinded by anger - yell out the fact that Peter is his son. Perhaps for a second Erik would see Nina in place of Peter for a brief second as he recognises the familiar resemblance (as he is staring at another child of his in danger). And then of course he wouldn’t hurt him but instead freeze due to shock. What do you think? Too much? A scenario like this would kinda only work if the time skip is much shorter - maybe just a year. I quite like fics that address the fact that Peter is probably on some level afraid of Erik when he goes full Magneto. I like the scene when Peter claims to not fear him to his mother (which imho reveals that he in fact actually does). I think it adds an interesting layer to Peter’s feelings about telling him. I don’t think Erik would kill him - even if no one revealed their familial relationship - but that uncertainty in such a scene could kinda be dramatically interesting I think? I dunno, sorry if I’m rambling - I just quite like discussing alternative scenarios with other fans :) and wanted to hear your thoughts.
Tumblr media
Ahh welcome back Anon!! Always a pleasure to talk X-Men with you! 💕
And aww thank you! I loved working on the Oleander animatic! The Phoenix was especially fun to animate, and of course the hug made all the hard work worth it haha. And awww yes! I love that edit too, it uses an audio from Gotham Knights where Batman is talking about Nightwing and how proud he is of him. As soon as I heard it I knew it would fit really well with a good timeline Dadneto, and I was definitely inspired by my fic The Hardest Part Is Leaving You which I had finished not long before making that edit!
Oh yeah, the effects in Dark Phoenix are actually pretty solid (at least most of the effects surrounding Jean and the Phoenix at least). Would have loved to see more of the X-Men as an actual team as well, but alas, the writers have robbed us of that yet again 😭 Guess that's what we're here for lol.
And OOOH Anon I love that idea! Definitely not too much, I think that's a great mix of angsty and intense but also heartfelt! And yes, a shorter timeskip between Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix is always appreciated haha. That's such a fair point about Peter being afraid of Erik when he's in 'Magneto' mode too. Usually I write them post reveal so I mostly play around with the concept of what their relationship is like after many years of bonding and trust has been built, which means Peter is rarely if ever scared for himself, but more likely scared of what Erik could do to others in the case Peter ever got hurt. Younger Peter would definitely struggle with that though I bet!
Thanks for sharing your ideas with me Anon, I love hearing them! If you ever turn them into a fic let me know, I'd love to read it! :D Have an awesome day!

Pedro Pascal as Mr Fantastic and Ranveer Singh as DON. Both are met with scepticism.
But I saw Ranveer's most recent interview this morning saying that so many people were sceptical about other actors and their characters then became popular (Ranveer talked about Daniel Craig as the new Bond. I can also think of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Michael Fassbender as young Magneto and Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Strange). And these actors made their characters their own.
I am not big on superheroes or franchises (with the exception of Star Wars) but I am rooting for Pedro and Ranveer. Both are great actors and will make people eat crow.
(While I am at it, can Fassy be Dr Doom?)

For some reason I found Wanda killing Xavier more horrifying than how Jean kills Xavier in X-Men 3 Last Stand... maybe because I’m watching X-Men 3 for like the third time in my life and I guess the shock value of it is gone. I already expect. Plus as I last recall, I think I was more sad than anything and well maybe also shocked. I was shocked and sad when Wanda killed Xavier too but that was due to not seeing him being played by Patrick Stewart for so long and seeing Patrick Stewart again reprising that role really warmed by own heart, I was so happy and then it was cut short with Wanda killing him. Man they really made Scarlet Witch such a badass villain. Tbh I don’t think I was this scared with Thanos but with Scarlet Witch, there was genuine fear and that’s probably due to the amount of successful killing that she leaves in her wake. Thanos killed people, but it was generally no-name characters, and the main characters being killed in the end mostly felt like sacrifices of their own volition just to defeat Thanos than the murderbot that Wanda was just covered in blood and killing just about everyone just to get to Chavez and her alternate’s children.
Anyway going back to Xavier’s death at the hands of Scarlet Witch... I guess MoM was more successful at building up Wanda as a villain unlike the X-Men series where Jean becoming a villain just seem to came out of nowhere. Wanda’s journey to villain was much more realized and I guess what’s horrifying is how human she is while being just monstrous, you know. You can’t help but feel for her but no she needs to be stopped and also scared because you know she can’t be stopped and in the past it seemed the only way she can be stopped is by reasoning with her which Strange wasn’t able to do.
There’s also the fact that Elizabeth Olsen’s murderous expressions and her blank creepy psychopathic “I’m gonna kill you” looks (idk how to describe but girl can really pull off being scary well) is just more effective than the CGI being done to Famke Janssen where her eyes are just black and she becomes kind of a demon but it’s just idk poor. Like I feel nothing there whereas with Wanda, I’m genuinely scared.
I guess maybe Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff is just a better villain than Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix. Grieving mother and widow who is still dealing with trauma of the losses she experienced both in reality and in the fiction she created, and whose powers who allow her to do absolutely anything ready to tear the multiverse just to kill her alternate and replace her is pretty scary and what’s more fucking human compared to the generic woman born of great power who needs to be controlled else said power will control her because you know it’s just too much. Like I don’t feel impressed with Jean, maybe a little pity but the storyline just pisses me off. At least with Wanda there’s agency there. Wanda is doing terrible stuff by her own volition and that’s more terrifying to me compared to powerful woman who can’t control her own power.
Is Jean generally a weak character in the xmen comic books or is it just that the movies make her this way. Like this damsel in distress who needs to be protected and saved from even herself. She had this awesome ending in X Men 2 where she becomes the hero and for once refuses to let the men in her life protect and save her only for it all to be ruined in X-Men 3! Honestly it’s so lame.
I’m sorry for being so harsh but Jean is just so lame! I mean compared to Wanda anyway. I can’t believe it took this long for us to see a live-action Wanda Maximoff... though maybe it’s because House of M storyline wasn’t created yet because I recall a long while back I read in the wiki that the Dark Phoenix storyline was considered one of the best in the X-Men comics hence why the movie franchise kept trying to revive and recreate it only to fail so spectacularly.
Though to be fair, I haven’t watched the X-Men movie Dark Phoenix yet so the verdict is out there if I think it sucks or not...
But X-Men 3 Last Stand is well... kind disappointing in this re-watch. I guess I’m spoiled and just can’t help comparing Jean to Wanda lol. It’s unfair I know, but like I’m a little pissed we never saw the Scarlet Witch in the X-Men universe especially since she started out as a mutant and was part of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants.
She’s also, like to me anyway, one hell of a villain.
Yeah I was very much impressed by her in Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness that I’m kinda obsessed with her right now.
But I’m only re-watching the X-Men movies because well the parallels with her and Magneto and I want to see OG Magneto who Elizabeth Olsen wants her fictional dad for her character to be.

Hi I just discovered your blog (why have I never seen it before it’s amazing!) and I was wondering if you only do Marvel art. I saw somewhere you mentioned doing Supernatural art but I’ve only seen your marvel stuff so far. Your Order of the Avengers AU was phenomenal and I’d love to see it expanded to other fandoms hero’s like the Justice League or X-men or something (only if you had fun making it and would like to). It’s just so unique and I’ve never seen that idea done with the detailed yours has. But if your done with it that’s totally ok to! I love your work, you are incredibly talented and I hope you know that! I hope you have a great day!
P.S. If you have any head-cannons/stories behind some of the clothing choices or other details that you wanted to share I would love to hear them!
Hi ^^
Thank you so much for your very nice message about my art in general and my The Order of the Avengers series in particular. It's very kind of you ♥
Hi I just discovered your blog
It's never too late to join the party! Welcome and I hope you'll enjoy what is coming next! 🥳
I was wondering if you only do Marvel art.
No! I also draw Supernatural artworks, I drew TONS of them in the past but as I have been focusing much more on Marvel in the past 7-8 years, my Spn artworks are buried in the depths of my Tumblr. However, I drew a couple of new artworks after the Spn series finale (HERE and HERE) and if you want to see some of my old stuff, may I recommend you this one , this one and this one.
However, I'm working on two new portraits of Sam and Dean that should be posted very soon (next week I think). Exactly like in my Avengers series, we are going to step back in time (but it's a bit closer to us, though 😄)
Your Order of the Avengers AU was phenomenal and I’d love to see it expanded to other fandoms hero’s like the Justice League or X-men or something.
I'm so sorry, I'm not really a fan of DC. I mean, I enjoy the movies, a couple of comics or cartoons from time to time but my knowledge of canon is not super developed, I'm far more comfortable with Marvel, particularly with the MCU. As far as X-Men are concerned, even if I loved movies like X-Men First Class and that I really hope they are going to keep Fassbender as Magneto, I'm waiting to see what the MCU is going to do with them before drawing anything.
However, I want to do more medieval inspired characters like The Guardians of the Galaxy for instance, so more to come when it comes to Medieval stuff but no DC and no X-Men (I'm sorry😅)
If you have any head-cannons/stories behind some of the clothing choices or other details that you wanted to share I would love to hear them!
You are going to laugh:
Peter, who is the epitome of kindness was inspired by Mordred in the movie Excalibur (I know it doesn't make sense because his armor doesn't even look like the one of Mordred but I had the image of an evil little prince when I drew him).
Bucky is a fighter but he's also a healer and has tons of medicine in his various bags and satchels. Not for him. For Steve, because he's a reckless idiot.
Loki is constantly told by his entourage that he's spending far too much money for his armors, outfits but also entertainment but he's high-maintenance, deal with it guys. 😎 (hence the super extra armor)
Sam shares a lot of his thoughts with his falcon, mainly that he's surrounded by idiots and that he's not paid enough for this sh*t. That's why Red Wing seems 100% done too: he's not paid enough for this sh*t either.
Scott's ant is a deadly weapon. Nobody realized because it looks cute with his tiny shoes and its ruffled collar, but once everybody saw it on the battle field, it became clear that it wasn't just a cute pet.
Natasha is the most mysterious member of the Order, nobody knows about her past (except maybe Steve). To add to the mystery, she loves spreading completely crazy rumors about herself including that she can kill a man just by kissing him or turn into a dragon during the full moon. Sam, Steve and Bucky are more than happy to confirm every crazy sh*t Natasha comes up with.
Tony...is still Tony. He loves building stuff, and inventing crazy machines that wander into the castle. He keeps on telling people not to pay attention but it's hard not to freak out in front of a giant mechanical armor that walks on its own. --- He also enjoys entering into "dick contests" with Strange on a regular basis and teasing him that what he does isn't "real magic" (even after seeing everything Strange was capable and muttering "Not bad..." 😄)
Tumblr media
This pic is making more sense than everything I wrote above but...for me, it's very clear, I swear. 🤓
I hope I answered your question, thanks again!

So I’m finally watching the x-men movies and here are my comments and ratings so far. These ratings are completely arbitrary and completely based on how much fun I had while watching it. Also some great memes I made and sent to my roommates who dont appreciate it as much as you all will.
X-Men: First Class
Okay so we pirated this and there was no subtitles for foreign language, and about 30% of it is in German, French, Spanish, or Russian. So my understanding of these scenes was reliant solely on my rudimentary understanding of basic phrases, vocab, and counting in each of these languages
Watching Erik fuckin murder nazis while casually taking a drink of beer
Tumblr media
Also I love Michael Fassbender but i feel like Erik’s character should have a german accent. Can’t complain too much though ngl
They went to a strip club and literally only looked at each other like sorry i dont make the rules but that is not heterosexual
I’m new to these movies so I hope I don’t offend any like, Mystique stans but Raven you win World’s Worst Sister. like bro doesnt wanna see ur tits out he doesnt care that you’re blue OKAY he’s ur brother. I’m just saying if my brother got shot in the spine by his boyfriend i wouldnt leave him lying in the sand to ditch him with said boyfriend idk maybe i’m just built different
Charles fuckin waits for Erik and Raven to leave before saying he can’t feel his legs. Anyways who else wants to cry? 🙃
Barely passes Bechdel test but loses points for immediately killing the only black man character and then have the only black woman character turn traitor 🤷🏻‍♀️
My guy decided to betray his boyfriend then break the woman he almost killed and then arrested out of prison. Then sometime inbetween those two events he decided “i need... a cape.” And then he STUCK TO THE CAPE for the next like forty years. Imagine being so stubborn you stick to the same purple and maroon color scheme for half your life.
Pretty gay. Friends to lovers to enemies. Utterly heartbreaking. 12/10
X-Men: Wolverine Origins
Honestly not as bad as I was expecting but that might be bc I’ve only heard negative things
This movie honestly was one big middle finger to my ADHD bc the pacing was kinda weird
Damn i hope we get Remy in the other movies his powers are hella cool in this
Deadpool who? Never heard of him he doesnt exist.
Oh yeah I think there is something called a wo-man in this movie?
3/10
X-Men
Knowing that this movie is from 2000 really made it palatable tbh. Like, surprisingly good considering it came out a month after I was born
Why do i got a feeling that Charles is gonna be so useless in the next like three movies
I forgot movies before like 2016 couldnt write women for shit. Jean is to the X-Men what Black Widow is to the Avengers tbh. Love the characters and their potential, but played with the emotional range of a teaspoon
Also Scott is pretty cool but why is his only lines about his girlfriend? Like calm down bro.
I’m so here for Dad Wolverine tbh. Like my guy really was just like:
Tumblr media
Somehow despite having many female leads it still doesnt pass the Bechdel Test???
8/10
X2
Gonna be honest here. I was making dinner while watching this, so I was only like half present.
Bobby “coming out” to his family is just *chef’s kiss*
Kinda boring conflict ngl but I’m here for the characters at this point
Magneto murdering someone w the iron in their blood is fuckin metal as hell. No pun intended.
The moment Rogue sees Magneto for the first time since he tried to kill her in the last movie and she about to take her gloves off deceased me on the fuckin spot. Bitch really said call an ambulance but not for me.
Tumblr media
Anyways Charles is one of the most powerful characters in the comics but he has once again been relegated to plot device in this movie. I get it, I get it, mentor character. He could fix every problem in these movies if he wasn’t such a liberal about his powers :/
I’m so SICK of the silent and dangerous Asian assassin character archetype. Yes I KNOW it was 2003 so let’s take this as yet another reminder that we need to do better
Okay ik we’re not supposed to know that Mystique is his sister yet bc it’s only 2003 and First Class wont come out for another eight years but STILL yall really left him in there to die can you NOT
Also real question: was i supposed to be sad that Jean died?
5/10

To me, it doesn’t make sense to make Magneto the main villain because it has been done so much before and it would connect it so much to the Fox Films. Also I think there is a GREAT laziness in writing Magneto especially in films. He generally didn’t want to kill all humans, subjugate them yes because he doesn’t trust them. Which isn’t a ‘good guy’ move in itself and he slips in and out of.
He legit murdered genocide I think when he was going to kill all humans. Like no.
I also think that the average cinema goer likes Magneto too much… or maybe that is me. It would also require them to recast the most famous faces of the franchises?
Like is anyone going to care if they recast Jean, Scott, Iceman, Rogue, Kitty, Beast even Mystique but Magneto? I don’t know. I have long been a fan of an actual Jewish actor playing Magneto but following Ian McKellan would be difficult for the casual fans to accept. I don’t think Fassbender left such an amazing impression.
Even my most average MCU fans friends (and god they love the MCU 😤 but I see past it) still talk about how much they want to see a Magneto solo film.
To me I would put the focus on their reveal and sentinels. Then again I thought they’ll go through Krakoa stuff. Like it turns out the mutants have been living on this Island etc
With the ‘simpler times’ comment I have to for the sake of my sanity have to think that it was because Pietro knew where he was. Things were clear to him, as much as it hurt he had his sister. The following trauma had not occurred. Again I don’t think this is true but I am trying to reason bad writing. He didn’t doubt his morality but was indebted and controlled. Shitty actions were out of his control.
I don’t read Avengers so I didn’t know he was shelved for so long.
I think the Trial of Magneto is trying to ride on the coattails of Wandavision because even though she’s not a mutant a lot of the internet was wanting Magneto to show up. So what is the best way to get those fans who wanted to see that? Set up a family comic book where they establish the family again because I guess the MCU fans heard they’ve changed their background and themselves didn’t like it.
I see the Trial of Magneto as something poorly thought out as they saw what the audience was interested in. The timeline kind of clashes uncomfortably with Inferno. Which makes me think it was wedged in there to ride the Wandavision train and undo the retcon on the side of the main storyline.
Thank you for reading my essay/rant
Ok so I'm going to first say you have a lot of great thoughts and great on picking up the whole forced feeling. You are right, it does feel wedged in there and it does feel forced because that's exactly what Marvel did.
The Trial of Magneto was supposed to be an X-Factor plot, it was Leah Williams next arc, here's an article link talking about her podcast: link (yes I know it's bleeding cool but I don't have time to listen to the podcast)
Leah Williams tells us that X-Factor was canceled because Leah's pitch for the Magneto/Wanda story for X-Factor, now called Trial Of Magneto, became such a popular pitch at Marvel but they thought the reader numbers for X-Factor wasn't big enough for this story, so they wanted it as a separate comic. And canceled X-Factor #10 rather than seeing it run as originally planned, with the Trial beginning in X-Factor #15. Williams says she only learned about the cancellation of X-Factor when she was writing #9, so as she had to finish the series quickly, squeezing six issues worth of story into those last two issues, calling it "cramped and rushed".
So I'm not a fan of Leah but the way Marvel treats it's writers has always been terrible so this cancellation doesn't surprise me. Could this be about W*ndaVision? It's likely, but it's more likely this has to do with Hickman bowing out. It's no secret literally everyone hated the retcon and I always knew it would be undone but I didn't think it would take 6 years but here we are.
Hickman leaving is a bigger thing, he stated in an interview ( link ) that he had planned Krakoa and X-Men to be a 3 arc story, and he wasn't allowed to move onto the 2nd arc because the clowns at Marvel liked the idea of Krakoa too much and I'm so mad because that's exactly the kinda behavior that annoys me with the fans, them thinking Krakoa is just a fun playground for the mutants to mess around with.
"Oh, plans have changed entirely," Hickman says. "When I pitched the X-Men story I wanted to do, I pitched a very big, very broad, three-act, three-event narrative, the first of which was House of X. And while this loosely worked as a three-year plan, I told Marvel upfront that I honestly had no idea how long the first part would last because there were a lot of interesting ideas that I had seeded that other creators would want to play with, and so, we left this rather open-ended. I was also pretty clear with all the writers that came into the office what the initial, three-act plan was so no one would be surprised when it was time for the line to pivot." Hickman continues, "However, I also knew that I was cooking with dynamite, and it was very possible that what I had written in House of X, and the ideas contained within, was not actually the first act of a three-act story, but something that resonated more deeply and worked more like Giant-Size X-Men, where it would represent a paradigm shift in the entire X-Men line for a prolonged period of time. So, during the pandemic, when the time came for me to start pointing things toward writing the second-act event, I asked everyone if they were ready for me to do that, and to a man, everyone wanted to stay in the first act. It was really interesting, because I appreciated that House of X resonated with them to the extent that they didn't want it to end, but the reality was that I knew I would be leaving the line early."
I'm so MAD because the thing I was predicting, that Hickman would have it come crashing down and everything would be revealed to be terrible and Mutant Death Sex Cult Island wasn't a paradise is never going to happen because the fucking CLOWNS at Marvel don't want him to move past it. I may have my personal gripes about some of Hickman's writing but we can't deny the man wrote one of the best if only the best Marvel Event with Fantastic Four/Avengers/Secret War.
As for the simpler times comment, like I have my theories that I wrote out here, and that's what I think is most likely but I do think Pietro's life has never been easy or simple once his adoptive parents died. Pietro could be drinking to a time before the Brotherhood.
I would love for a Jewish actor to play Magneto and any other characters who are Jewish. I would love for a Jewish writer to be able to write them too. However Ian's performance literally set him in the minds of the people as Magneto, not even Fassbender's bleh one note Magneto could compare. Imo the only reason people liked the younger Magneto was because he was young, handsome (? ig idk i dont simp for him) and they could ship him with young professor X (cowards. where is the old man ship???) But I feel like a new actor could definitely fill the role if they are Jewish and the writing was good.
Magneto's writing in comics... well I just wish we could have a Jewish writer for him. There's some great stuff for him but I feel like characters like him and Doom could be written better by non white/american writers.
Although by today's standards the og X-Men trilogy doesn't hold up I will defend the first two movies with my life simply because after Blade these movies opened up the idea that a good serious, non campy version where characters called Magneto and Cyclops were taken seriously. X2 in my mind was the definitive X-Men movie. Was it totally comic accurate? No, but it doesn't do what the MCU does, it doesn't treat the watcher like they need to have their hand held through all the military propaganda and "hints to the comics". Also side note; the reason no one cared about any of the other X-Men being recast is because all through most of the X-Men movies the focal story point has been Professor X vs Magneto. If they really want people to care about those characters/actors then we would need stories that focused on them. Not like how Storm barely had any character growth or plot in the og X-Men and even young Ororo got mishandled by the script. This is why I feel we should have "origin movies" for the X-Men that don't do what Wolverine Origins did and try to make a whole new cast but instead should use the stories as they are. If it was Kurt's story then we would see him join the X-Men, and have the other actors revolve around that. Same with each of the others, the X-Men work best when they are working off each other and each given enough screen/page time to shine. Unfortunately we all have our favorites, even movies and writers, so those are who are going to be pushed for fans to love.
Thank you for your long rant and sorry for my own long rant/reply.

Final X-Men Movie Tier List Update- Deadpool & Wolverine (Non-Spoiler)
Now finally back from D&W and it was a great movie! I loved the fight scenes with the first fight between Wade and Logan and the last fight being standouts. Logan and Wade are just great together here and how they develop their friendship is the best part. Cassandra Nova is gleefully sadistic here and a great performance put there.
I can't really go too much since that will go into spoilers, but there are surprises here that made me happy. However, I will say that my last post was strangely fitting here since the main message of the movie is preserving legacies, even if they aren't well liked as they are now.
Tumblr media
And that's that, all the X-Men movie from Fox and now including D&W, so now all that's left is...
THE FINAL RANKING (in my opinion)
#14. X-Men: The Last Stand- A movie that just pisses me off the more I think about it.
#13. X-Men Origins: Wolverine- An eh movie with some interesting stuff, but that's it.
#12. The New Mutants- Very interesting premise, but it was alright.
#11. X-Men: Apocalypse- An ok movie carried by Erik.
#10. X-Men: Dark Pheonix- Very good first half but falls apart through the other half. Really wished there was a retry for this one.
#9. Deadpool 2- Good movie with moments and characters that I liked, but not as good as....
#8. Deadpool- A good, funny movie that redeems fans hope for Wade in this franchise.
#7. The Wolverine- Very underrated movie that should deserve some more attention honestly.
#6. X-Men- A damn good way to start off this whole franchise.
#5. Deadpool & Wolverine- A great movie that serves as an excellent send off to the franchise.
#4. X-Men: First Class- Great movie that shows the start of Charles wanting peace between mutants and humans and the rise of Erik becoming Magneto. Great performances by McAvoy and Fassbender.
#3. X2- Takes everything from the first film and elevates it to 11. Best villain of the whole franchise with Cox as Stryker and the great film debut of Kurt.
#2. X-Men: Days of Future Past- Amazing time travel movie with a great dynamic of Logan and Charles, an iconic moment with Peter, and the best climax in the entire series.
#1. Logan- A straight up masterpiece that I just love talking about since I first watched it.

Marvel Movie Nights: X-Men Apocalypse
Tumblr media
I spent a good majority of my time watching this trying to untangle why it is that the film just... isn’t good.  It’s not terrible - It’s perfectly watchable, and at some points even entertaining.  But as the MCU takes off, the X-Men franchise at this point is feeling old and stale and kind of at a loss as to where to go creatively.  Yes - I’ve read enough of the comics to get that the mutants are always hated and feared, it is a running theme.  But the comics also know when to have fun.
And that is the biggest conclusion I came to.  These films just aren’t any fun.
They’re such laborious endeavors - rehashing the same thematic material that the original X-Men did fifteen years earlier.  It’s a shame that my favorite superheroes from the comics are always reduced to boring slugfests.
This time, we bring in Apocalypse, who in the comics, is this larger than life figure.  He’s physically menacing (in the way that Thanos is), and with no shade to Oscar Isaac, he’s doing what he can with such a ridiculous character, there’s not really anything menacing about him.  In fact - he’s mostly void of any kind of personality other than his main goal of taking over the world.  Because that’s what these people do.
We waste a big amount of screen time having him collect his four horsemen, which probably doesn’t mean much to people who don’t read the comics.  Storm is (re-)introduced, and while the new actress playing her is delightful, she’s basically sidelined (again).  They bring in Olivia Munn to play Psylocke who has zero personality.  She doesn’t even have lines.  She’s just there to wield her purple sword and take up space.  And then we have an trashed out Angel, who in the comics is Warren Worthington III, but since they already have had WW III, this dude is just another Angel with wings, only to give him metal ones because the comics only to kill him off.  It’s just... so pointless.
Meanwhile on the side of characters we’ve gotten to know... I don’t even know why I bother.  James McAvoy is back as Xavier.  And I really like him! But he doesn’t get much to do.  Michael Fassbender is the only one who has any kind of emotional arc as Magneto, which is kind of stalls out half way through the movie since the literal second half of the movie is one giant fight scene.  And of course... Jennifer Lawrence is back as Mystique, and omg am I so tired of Mystique at this point.  Jennifer Lawrence seems pretty tired of her, too, at this point.  Even Nicholas Hault has somewhat lost his charm as Beast.  Everyone is just... kind of there with not a whole lot to do, because this script just doesn’t do anything.
Oh, and I want to mention that Moira MacTaggart is back... because she spends the whole time looking like Dana Scully from The X-Files.
We get introductions to Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler (and in doing so - kind of throws the previous movie’s timeline out the window?).  You’d think new blood would infuse this story with something interesting and yet... no one has anything to do.
That’s the problem with this film.  The characters are flat and boring.  The story is weak and uninspired.  Apocalypse is such a great character from the comics, and it seems like the creative team just didn’t know what to do with him.  Even the action is kind of weak.  I know I’ve complained about it before, but you have a team of superheroes who never act like a team.  There are such fascinating powers to play with here, and one of the highlights of the comics is that they all get to play off each other, and they never go for it in these films, and I don’t understand why.
I will say - there is one highlight of this film, and it’s the sequence where Quicksilver saves everyone from a building that is blowing up.  And, honestly, it’s the most fun sequence.  It’s a shame the rest of the film couldn’t develop on that kind of creativity.
The ending tag, interestingly, teases a Mr. Sinister story and I’m so glad they never went there with this creative team.  Mr. Sinister is glam, melodramatic, and utterly nonsensical.  And Fox would have made it serious and tedious and wooden.
The production value itself is fine.  There are actually a couple of music cues I really liked (just wanted to put that out there...).  Visually it’s fine, there are a couple of CGI moments that don’t hold up, but the film looks good as a whole.  The film works on a production level.  It’s really the terrible script that holds the film back.
I should also probably mention there’s a Wolverine cameo in here.  I remember at the time some people called it gratuitous.  I kind of just let it wash over me like everything else in this film.
Final Verdict: I don’t hate this film.  It’s perfectly watchable and far more competent than Dark Phoenix is going to be.  But it’s frustrating to see all this potential being wasted on a film that doesn’t seem to ultimately go anywhere.  There’s nothing in this film that makes a genuine emotional connection, so why should the audience care?
Next-Up: Doctor Strange.  You know, I’ll take it after this...

Note
okay you say mcavoy and fassbinder having great chemistry as professor x and magneto and I agree. thoughts on the chemistry between the actors of their older counterparts: mckellen and stewart?
Still amazing! I can believe them as friends more than Fassbender and McAvoy but that might be because I was young when the original movies came out and didn't know any better. Honestly I think in almost any iteration I think they are tragically in love.
