Re: tumblr bans of transfemmes.

Let's ignore PhotoMatt for a moment. Manbaby tech CEO doubling down on a stupid decision and making himself look like more of an ass doing so is not a new phenomena.

Tumblr has consistently said, in both public statements and leaked internal communication, that they're essentially running a skeleton crew.

They keep saying that they don't have the resources to moderate, manually review posts, have any kind of appeal process, or anything. So, as people have widely received communications about, they seemed to have automated a significant portion of the moderation to operate solely on the quantity of reports (probably with a basic filter, eg quantity of reports regarding a certain post, within a certain timeframe) to automatically ban or shadowban accounts.

And so, they wipe their hands, both to the users, the public, and their own consciousness, and go about their automated operations.

All of this is likely true. Tumblr, at this point, is essentially abandonware internally, a kind of weird vanity project/dumpster ground for server infrastructure for Automattic. Likely, they don't want the bad press of "shutting down" fully. Or maybe the trickle of revenue they get here just barely exceeds operating costs, so why not keep it around?

Whatever is the case, the bans are a result of an automated process working in the background. I'm giving them some benefit of the doubt here, of course, we can't know anything for certain- but it seems like the individual bans are not based on any specific, manual action.

And that doesn't fucking excuse anything.

Because at some point, multiple people sat down at tumblr, and decided how to cut costs.

And they decided that the bare minimum of report abuse prevention was one of the first things on the chopping block.

Before the boops. Before GUI reconfigures.

They decided to cut something that is necessary to manage online communities.

They decided to cut something that ensures any targeted group will have any kind of community online.

And then, after all of that, the only manual intervention is doubling down on the shitty decisions that the automated systems make, and plucking reasons out of their ass for why they were the right decisions all along.

It's pure silicon valley brain. Blame the computer often and always. Use it to shield the active decisions you made when designing the computer that way. Treat it as a fact of life as opposed to something they actively made decisions for.

Is tumblr staff hitting the banhammer on each transfemme one by one? No.

Is tumblr staff deliberately crafting a system that allows TERFs and other conservative bigots to get rid of the "undesirables" for them? Yup. But they sure as hell are trying to not say the quiet part out loud. If they can always point the finger somewhere else, to the advertisers, to the automated systems, to the TERFs, then they can always have juuusssttt enough plausible deniability.

But being the "queerest place on the internet" requires concious acknowledgement that queer people will be targets of harassment, and you will have to protect against that.

Side note, this is why I do try to keep my blog at least somewhat SFW. Its one of the main reasons why I choose not to reblog all of the posts I'm tagged in- if the post is overtly NSFW, I've probably seen it, appreciated it, and consciously decided my level of interaction with it mostly based on how "tumblr friendly" it is. Is that bowing down to them? A little. It's also my choice. I value the community I have here. The pushes that y'all have given me gave me the strength to transition, and honestly gives me a lot of motivation to research HRT biology as much as I can, among many other things.

Yeah, I post pictures that are clearly meant to be found attractive in ways that are generally not socially acceptable , but never actual NSFW. I would like to think that I'm pretty safe from bans, but hey. Who knows. I don't want to lose my follower base, and the community around it.

Reading Middle Grade Fiction

Today I saw a post on Twitter that I replied to, but my account there is shadowbanned and it got no traction, so I'm posting here.

Context: There is discourse on Twitter stating that adults shouldn't read/buy/engage with middle grade books.

I cannot believe this is actual discourse. Adults should read WHAT THEY WANT.

Think of the age levels on books as a rating system like what's on moves. G, PG, R, et cetera.

I don't typically like 90% of the books written for adults because they do not appeal to me. I don't like sex, gratuitous violence, heavy romance, etc. These are usually the themes that end up in adult books, especially by first-time tradpub authors.

There's another 10% that are GREAT! Political fantasies, friendship-based fantasy, dark fantasy/horror, etc. Perfect for me! But for a lot of those themes, I need to look at middle grade. It's SAD to me that publishers push for romance and sexual content in books for adults. It's a tragedy to me that publishers don't consider all genres for adults and only look for what is popular at the moment. It's rare that I find an adult book that has what I want in it. And if I do, it's either an indie book, or it's a book by a popular author that publishers know will sell no matter what.

What I want are stories with zero romance. Zero sexual tension. Zero jealousy or possessiveness. There are stories out there that need to be told that do not feature those themes, but they are INCREDIBLY hard to find in adult fantasy. I DO want dragons and adventure and friendship. Danger and sorrow. Discovery.

And I really do look! I browsed Libby for hours a few weeks ago and made a tagged list of books that looked interesting, but in looking at reviews, I found romance was a HUGE part of it. I borrowed one book that really did seem promising, only to find it was cover to cover full of violence and fucking with so little story in between, it was comical.

If you've written one, or know of one, PLEASE tell me. I have found some absolute gems in indie circles, but these are hard to find because of how social media algorithms work.

And before you come at me, this isn't a slight on books with romance or violence or other mature themes. This is my frustration that the ONLY books written for adults tend to circle around one or both. I want more variety. I don't want to end one for the other. But publishers are almost exclusively going for heterosexual romance in fantasy lately, to the point where it's exceedingly hard to find anything else.

(plus, the editing is bad in a lot of these, but that's a whole other point.)

You know what also sucks? Middle grade books are becoming full of those themes, too. It's becoming harder and harder to read non-romance without going to picture books. With young adult books now just a euphemism for "adult books but with younger characters," now publishers are going after middle grade and trying to spice that up, too. I mean what the hell? Let other genres exist.

This is... a very disjointed rant. I think the point is that no one should be judging people for what they read, especially because the books that are supposedly "for me" aren't even vaguely appealing to me.

Wow... how triggered people can get by spaming some comic thingys. I'm sorry you don't like Hank but I love him so I'll keep doing it. Idk who you are because you were on anon. But if you follow me (what I think cause I'm shadowbanned so only people who follow me can see my stuff. beside that I didn't used a single tag which should make my stuff appeare under the main tag so everyone can see it) then there are two simple solution: Unfollow me or block the tag #avy reads comics. I put this there for exact THIS reason, so people who feel annoyed by it can block it. I'm sorry that I'm a really emotional person and I'm sorry that I'm hyped that I finally started this journey, something I wanted to do for YEARS but was always too intimidated and overwhelmed. But now I found very nice people who are so kind to guide me through this mess, so this makes me double hyped. And I'm sorry that I need to put all this emotions somewhere to get them out of my system.

I know not everyone feels that way but if I hear that people started to read/watch something that I love and I'm hyped for, especially if it's something I recomended to them, I'm always happy to see their reaction to what they're reading/watching. I love to have some little updates to see where they are now and how they felt etc. And I always feel if this makes me happy, then maybe it makes them happy too and if not AGAIN: I put a tag there for them to block!

So if this annoys you that much, then I'm sorry but I won't stop it. Why should I give up my fun if you have clearly enough option to hanlde your problem yourself? Tbh it's also funny how much this triggered you that you had the need to send this ask to !!!ALL!!! my blogs! Not just one. No to every single blog I have! Like whaaaaat? Idk I know this is supposed to be some kind of anon hate but tbh this is so funny to me 🤣

So this is something I've been thinking about for a while, and I'm planning to move to ao3 for getting my works out since I've been shadowbanned by tumblr, however that's not the only reason. Just my opinion on my blog and if you don't wanna read it, just scroll away.

I’ve come to realize that tumblr is not a space for my writings. I say this even if I’m glad to know that I have over 1k followers here, but at the same time what is the point of it? Over a period of time I also figured that the pace of consuming content here is not a normal one. Some of you do appreciate what I write and I’m thankful for that, but at the same time majority of the people out there demand for a part 2 to things when they haven’t bothered to interact with my content. I also don’t want to be responsible for checking my followers or to see that minors are interacting with my content despite my rules saying so when I'm here to write my content and leave it there.

Tumblr is more of an interactive platform among authors and readers alike and as you have noticed - I’m not a very interactive one. The only relationship I do care about here is the one between me and my readers since that is the sole reason I was here in the first place; Now talking about the author/ writer community here - it’s not a very healthy one either since there tends to be discourse, offensive bantering and sometimes even friendships falling apart when you don’t see eye to eye. Not to mention (and I'm not pointing fingers at one particular person but just people in general) behaviors get rubbed off really easily. And the last thing I need to see on my dash - normally or otherwise is that blank blogs are not allowed to follow them or pressure for readers to contribute to a fandom by reblogging their works. And I strongly believe that readers should do as they wish (as long as its not harming anyone) rather than being pressured to form an opinion based off someone else's. Not to mention, big time authors are entering small fandoms despite gaining huge followings in other fandoms which leaves very little chances for small time authors which makes it difficult for them to get their work out - not speaking out of my insecurity or anything but it’s a very unfair system. My move to ao3 also has to do with the fact that you can write comments or give kudos if you want, but you don't have to reblog to show your support to me. Just kudos and comments are enough. Another reason why my work isn't suited for tumblr is to do with the fact that the place has become too predictable with a lot of smut just for the sake of getting likes or follows and for the sake of algorithm as well. It's been two years since i've read any decent fics now and I don't even search the tags anymore. Erotica is a piece of writing but honestly, writing has been lost here as there is more emphasis on the prior compared to the plot and the plot is something my focus is on in a story.

Ever since I started writing for blue lock, there have been reports of my works being flagged down and due to that my interactions and the pace of my uploads have died down. With that being said, my space (and tumblr) has turned toxic, with people wanting to leave rude comments, accuse me that I’m plagiarizing author’s works and arguing about it in my askbox - without even spending a moment to think that we write for the same genre and we’re allowed to have coinciding themes as well as dialogues. When it comes down to me checking the tags to see if my work has showed up, I see a lot of authors paraphrasing my work and sometimes writing lines similar to what I wrote in my fics. Where’s the protection for my dignity or pointing out to them that they’ve taken my work?

Nothing. Just silence.

That’s not the only thing I’m upset about. It’s also to do with the lack of sensitivity some people have here. I take time out of my day to write these fics. I spend energy on what I write going through every line and making sure that I have it right and what do you do? Take 2 minutes out of your day to report my work - something that I spend hours on despite having a busy work life. Do you not think how much it can hurt a person to see their hard work go to waste like that? It’s just proving that some of your immaturity is very underserving for my writing despite me writing my pieces for you since its a self insert. And I don’t want to interact or know people like that cause it disgusts me. Not to mention, its an act of cowardice since you're hiding on the other side of the screen while I'm out here making my content and enjoying my interactions. To people who report my writing and send me hateful asks : For the record, you didn't make me quit writing. You just showed me how fucking sorry and pitiful you are, the fact that you would be a miserable wretch to live with and that no one likes you; it makes me wonder how pathetic you are in real life if this is how you are online. Now with my move to ao3, I can create my own content without having to worry about what I write or if I'm copying someone else's writings cause I'll be sticking to my dash and my works. And here I can upload anytime and take the pace that I like rather being rushed into it.

So question is... what am i going to do with this blog? Stay active. People are interested in my works - so i'm gonna make announcements and release early spoilers for my writings on ao3 here as well as interact better with my readers who want to stay on anon or off it along with opinions and feedback based on my work. Other than that, i also want to continue hosting character interviews/ asks and matchups with every milestone i hit! This ends with my official moveout to ao3. And I hope you enjoy my writings there !!

How can you tell that you've been shadow banned?

You see, shadowbanning isn't really the correct word because technically it's not shadowbanning if you can immediately tell something is wrong, but overall:

The messages section isn't there anymore, just the “activity” page. You'll find it impossible to message other blogs from the hidden blog.

Blog won't show up in post notes in any way. If you reblog or like a post the notes of the post will go up, but the name of the blog won't show up in the likes / reblogs section when you open them (you can check on whatever post I reblogged)

People won't be notified of you leaving likes / reblogs / tagging them in their activity page. Likewise, people that have notifications on for your blog won't get any after you've posted something new (thank you @vero-niche for the info!!)

The search system on the blog doesn't work– and not in the usual Tumblr's-search-system-is-a-mess way, you can look up even the most common tag and it won't give you any result, similarly to if you had enabled the “hide blog from search results” (you haven't)

If people @/mention you in a post, you won't receive any notification of that.

Most importantly, blog won't show in Tumblr search, and posts won't appear in the tags, which SUCKS

I'm not sure here because only side blogs of mine have been effected so far, but if it happens to your main I think the ability to reply to posts may be taken away from you and it might also effect you sending asks

Anyways like. it doesn't count as shadowbanning because from all these things you can immediately tell something is wrong; so if you haven't noticed any of this so far you should be fine, if that's reason you asked :')

I am still shadowbanned, but a data export did at least allow me to access the message history I needed, so that's something. Haven't heard anything from tumblr support which is odd, previously when I've had to reach out to them because of weird things happening on my account they've come back to me within like 48 hours and fixed the issue.

I've been trying to figure out why I might have been shadowbanned, and my only guess is that recently I was going through a tag (I think for a musician), and there were like 5 bot posts in a row so I reported all of them in quick succession, and now I'm wondering if some system auto-flagged me as also being some kind of bot 😅 otherwise I've got no idea what's happened

i think you might be shadowbanned! your username doesn't show up in the suggestions when i search and your posts also don't show in the tags :( i’ve seen it happen a few times (dumblr sucks) and most of the time it resolves after a while, around a few weeks. i have a mutual who reached out to tumblr’s report/support system and that seemed to help? more info in this post here. i hope it gets fixed soon!! <3

Yeah I think so! I reached out to their support but never heard back. It's been a few months now at this point, so I'm losing hope of it being resolved. So frustrating not to be able to respond to anyone though!

Hi, sorry to bother you but i really want to read the meta post about Isildur that you shared with the best quotes of his interviews but the link doesn't work for me. Can you send it to me through the message system? I don't know why it works this way and not when i click directly on the post (it's not the first time), but it's only for Tumblr internal posts, external links from others sites works well (i can see his interview).

Also not sure if you want to fix it but your amazing screencaps of Isildur and Eärien holding hands in the deleted scenes of the bts vids, which made me very emotional (and sent me to listen on the loop their theme/song), don't appear in the tags of the characters or the actors or the rings of power tag. How long were you shadowbanned for and what did you do to fix it? my main was just shadowbanned and im really really worried

Hey! Firstly, don't panic. I know it's scary and frustrating and there are horror stories but try not to worry. Here is my experience.

On a normal Sunday eve, I lost access to my messages, couldn't comment, didn't show up anywhere (no one could tag me/see me on dash)

All in all I was out for about 10 days.

Tumblr support work Mon-Fri 9-6ish EST (I'm in the UK so this is the equivalent of 1pm start)

I put in a ticket from the 'banned' account , and didn't get a confirmation email. I thought that was weird.

I put in a ticket the next day from a new account I'd made to keep in touch with people. I used the email address connected with my main account on the form and explained the situation and the problems I was having.

I got a confirmation email. I'm not 100% sure but I think support sometimes blocks tickets from accounts they suspect as spam, which your account technically is on their system under the ban.

I'll be honest...i heard Jack shit the whole time, and it was extremely frustrating. I put in about 6 tickets, replied to confirmation emails and drove myself a bit crazy, but remember to stay polite in your emails. The staff are just doing their job and when it comes to these weird 'bans' it can make your account do funny things.

Then suddenly, I had a solitary email from support saying it was a glitch and it was fixed. Done. They also apologised for the wait.

So in my experience, send a few tickets under different categories (mine was eventually picked up under 'post not appearing in tags) , be polite and descriptive with the issue. Use the email associated with your account in the box. Potentially log out of your main account if you're not getting confirmation emails.

What i don’t get (btw anything you tag with ‘baby girl’ or ‘let these toxic codependent assholes kiss’ or your lingerie reblogs don’t show up anymore) is why is tumblr getting singled out? Have they SEEN Twitter? That place is NOT ‘family friendly’ jfc

I'm not gonna change my tags at this juncture bc the list is ever changing, and I can't keep up, and people on Android and desktop can still see it and people on iphones can access Tumblr thru a browser on their phone and have it work, and I do believe we will, eventually, see a change in how the tag filtering works.

I reblogged several posts about how and why this happened back on Sunday and if you want you can scroll back down and find them but the short answer is there are a couple of reasons this is happening to Tumblr. First is that it is happening on Twitter and other places, people do get shadowbanned for using words on the no-no list there. Second is that it feels worse here bc it is, bc Tumblr is not the powerhouse that Twitter is. Tumblr cannot afford to fight to the degree that Twitter can, and Tumblr also doesn't have the name recognition that Twitter does, and the system that Apple uses to confirm apps on the app store involves human interaction with the apps, and therefore will be informed by human biases. Third is that these tags, while seemingly random, are not; they are tags where humans at apple found straight up porn. Of course they found it in the baby.girl tag, and all the others. This is about images, not words, not really. They banned tags not bc the words were bad but bc they were used to archive images apple deems inappropriate. Now my take on it is uhh fuck apple, which has been my stance for a long time, but you know nobody asked me lmao

Eta: obviously certain words were banned bc they go against apples ideological stance but it's pretty fucking dumb to think that a racist post would be tagged with #racism. That's not how that works. The #racism tag is used to call out racism, which makes it fucking vital.

I've said it before, but it was actually that exact series that got me all, you know, acclimated to the whole poly pairing in the first place, haha.👉👈 I think I had just gotten into MHA and it was after the tumblr adult content ban and I was always searching for new tags that contained, you know, the dark obsessive stuff I like, and the yandere tag was one tag that contained a lot of that variety that hadn't been completely wiped cleaned and erased like n/s/f/w or non/con (like I'm wary of even typing shit because I feel like tumblr's "suppress post" system is way outta wack and idk might shadowban me or some shit)

Anyways I eventually stumbled upon that person's work (the one with the spider gag makes me especially anxious, horné but anxious, in a good/bad way 🥵) and eventually developed my own desire to write my own pieces for our crazy boys (and mha yandere stuff in general was what had me start writing again actually, with that one Bakugou thing being my first dip back in the water, you could say)

It's been a while since my last post took off so here's some answers to your questions. This is based on about 1 year of not working at Tumblr anymore so some info may be out of date, and some of these may actually be features/fixes in the work, but I'm fairly confident with these answers for now:

What tags are getting hidden? Posts? Can you embed links and not have a post hidden from the tags?

Tags that are hidden are not publicized anywhere afaik, that happened after my tenure but they're beholden to Apple's whims here. You can see any tags hidden as a result of Apple's censorship by opting out of hiding sensitive content in your settings:

Posts with links are hidden from search because it was a spam vector and they decided to blanket-ban any posts with links from appearing in search/tag views in order to combat tag spam from bots. Tumblr didn't have the money or resources dedicated to a better solution at the time and AFAIK, this has yet to be reversed

Easy ways to determine if you're shadowbanned and appeal? (Or even just no shadowbanning of accounts?)

There is no shadowbanning, there never has been and is probably not going to arrive any time soon. That would be an additional feature on top of Tumblr's already complicated admin tooling system. Users will mistake other symptoms (tumblr's search sucks, posts with links not showing up in tags, etc) for being shadowbanned and this simply isn't the case. It's just Tumblr being buggy.

More of a process before an account is deleted/locked/etc. rather than just nuking ones that get x number of flags.

A human being looks at flags and makes the decision to ban or not. This is not an automated process based on the number of flags. If it was, it would be horribly, horribly abused.

For example, improved blocking so that when you do block someone you don't see their posts when they are reblogged by someone you follow.

This has been something that even people on staff have wanted but are never given the bandwidth to implement because it's really, really hard to do what you described. Blame it on Tumblr's ancient codebase.

Ideally, I'd also like to see a rollback of censorship... But unfortunately, I don't think that is going to happen, so I'm tempering my expectations here.

Keep those expectations tempered, it's never coming back. I'd bet money on it. I'd also expect other major social networks to start reeling in on adult content in the coming year(s) too.

As the staff post about ad-free tumblr continues to get thousands of notes telling staff to fuck off in the tags, I wanna remind you that this website's days are numbered. Tumblr is still unprofitable and by some modern-day miracle none of its acquiring companies pulled the plug on this money pit. But it will happen if it continues its trajectory.

Whether you like it or not, Tumblr needs to make money off you somehow in order to stay up. It either serves ads or asks for money to use it. This has been a paradigm on the web longer than many of you have been alive. It's Tumblr's job to make money right now because it's well past its grace period of being a black hole for cash. This has actually always been Tumblr's job, since it is a corporation, but that's capitalism for ya.

If you want Tumblr to be here for free and you want to continue to use it, you do yourself a disservice by opposing any changes Tumblr makes in order to pay for its costs. When this site finally goes belly-up then you're gonna be Tumblr-less until whatever startup takes its place and the cycle repeats itself.

If you think it should just ask for donations Wikipedia-style, remember that if and when that happens, there will be users repeating the same tired bullshit about giving Tumblr any money.

This is the first time that this has ever happened. My previous posts weren't like that. I also checked the visibility setting and also my post did not contained any suggestive contents.

I have started to write on Tumblr not long ago so I am not sure what to do. But you look so cool and experienced so I am wondering maybe you will know.

i think there would be a few reasons why... but from your description if i have to guess, it's the same thing as what i've encountered sometimes.

in summary: tumblr's tagging system is buggy lmao

what i usually do is i'll edit my post and delete a tag. save it. recheck back to see if the post appears in the tags. put the tag back on. save. recheck. delete another tag. save. recheck. rinse and repeat until you have all the tags you want in your post and you can see said post in the tags.

eventually, given enough attempts, it would work for me, although it is quite a frustrating job, so i would just make sure it's listed under the genshin x reader tag. i never really cared about the other tags.

there's also the probability that your blog is "shadowbanned", or what tumblr refers to as a "glitch". the easiest way to check is to see whether your 'messages' tab appears beside the 'activity' tab on mobile. if it's missing, chances are you have been yeeted into the shadow realm ;(
