y'know i intended to draw a bunch of refs for some of my characters that i haven't posted a ton of art of for artfight this year but i think i'm literally just gonna make crunch and wesker's refs, re-do reverie's ref (it's been bugging me since last year), format and upload horatio's preexisting ref, and update some character descriptions. that might just be all i have the energy for regarding artfight prep, at least if i wanna have some energy going into artfight too

I'm tired and frustrated from trying to fix the problem these last few days and I know it's a stupid thing to be upset over but I am. Legit I'm kinda depressed about it. I was actually doing more art with it recently than I have in a while and now. This is really fucking with that.

Portfolio advice, from a lead who hires Concept Artists

(This was originally a twitter thread I wrote before the site self imolated, hense it's strange structure.) I wrote this after a weekend of portfolio reviews - 1. Like a maths exam, please please show your working. I want to see thumbs options, mid options and of course a final design.

2. Arrange your portfolio, I don't want to bounce about between subject matter and pipeline. Your portfolio's narrative should be as strong as your work... 3. Please make worlds that excite the viewer, make them want to go in and explore them, explain to them the interesting parts of the town, or the way the character's hat unfolds. How will this draw the viewer in? 4. As I've said before the majority of your project work is explanatory not mood, make sure your portfolio contains explanatory work. Explained here -

5. A lot of beautiful post apocolyptic paintings, , but 80% of realistic games and film, we just give the environment artists photo ref, they are capable artists in their own right. Different work in stylised where you do need to create rules for how things can be translated. 6. Production art contains call out sheets, material references and flat graphics. This doesn't have to be your final image, but it should support it.

7. Design characters on a swatch(es) of the environment they will be viewed in. Not on white. I make swatch backgrounds from screenshots, it avoids assumptions that damage readability. 8. Reverse of this, put people in your environments, show me the scale.

9. It's not a deal breaker for a review, but if you intend to get a job, please show me your work on a screen larger than a smartphone (print outs probably the cheapest option with the best battery life). 10. Please have your contact details clearly visible, and by that I mean email address, I will not pass your social media contact on, I cannot input your form into my tracking system. EMAIL ADDRESS emblazoned and bake it in, sometimes recruiters do funky stuff to pdfs

11. Your portfolio will never feel done, not to you anyway. You will have learnt from your latest pieces and want to apply it to older work. But we know art is a journey. Send your portfolio anyway. I've been in the industry 10+ years and my portfolio is still not 'finished'. 12. If you are applying to an environment centric Concept Art position then please vary your times of day! Golden hour is cool but show me some happy sunny days, looming overcast days, what about at night? Vary your weather too! Sunny snowy day? Rainy Spring day? Stormy night?

13. If you are applying for a character centric Concept Art role then please ensure your portfolio shows a variety of body types and ethnicities. 14. Designing characters for games? Please show back views and feet (!) Many potfolios contain only front views. This is a problem because:

You haven't shown you are considering the design from all angles.

In many games rear view is the main view.

Stop cropping feet.

15. If you are entry / graduating and looking at Portfolios to compare content and standard of yr own work too, look at hired grad/junior artists as opposed to seniors Seniors and leads often have old or personal work in their portfolio which isnt representative of the day job. 16a. Show clearly the intended use case for your Concept Art. Mention the game type in the description. Are these player character designs for a 3rd person adventure game? Then more back views please. Bonus points for diagetic ways of showing health / equipment / role etc.

16b. Are these designs for an FPS? Then really the player view of the gun needs to sell the player style/ choices, in an FPS your weapons are almost your character. Are these world designs? What's the view distance? For an RTS your shapes need to read from above & a distance. 16c. The lack of clarification means I am judging the design in isolation, which both harms the design (you might be considering the backview of a char as the main adventure character.) Or an NPC, their waist up expressions may be important for conveying exposition and mechanics.

16d. Concept art is not separate from gameplay, great concept art serves the game team before it is a good illustration.

17. Play games. A variety of games. Think about them. IMO to be a good concept artist you need to understand the common language & references used by your peers. Also understand the principles and common language your audience are used to. FPS design rules are v.diff from RTS.

18. There are many skills that are needed in concept art, please show them. For example: Graphic design - logos, liveries, typographic use etc. VFX concepts - Abilities, Ambience, motion concepts. Architectural knowledge - How buildings are built! & more but I'm out of space :O

Finally finished revising my ideas for post-AGIT Dan! It's under the cut, and it is similar to what I wrote out before(so if any of y'all read that much of the below will probably sound familiar).

The chart is so y’all can see the Dan ref next to Danny and Vlad. He’s meant to be a pretty even mix of them design wise, and I'm pretty proud about the blend :]

If there are any questions I’d love to answer them(whether about the specific story stuff below or if there’s anything else y’all are curious about with my ideas for him)! In spite of my fixation on the college trio, I think about Dan a ton lol

(This takes place in the range of about 2.5 weeks to 3 months after AGIT)

Dan’s clone body started destabilizing pretty soon after AGIT. With some convincing Danny and Dani agreed to use the ecto-dejecto to stabilize him(Dani still needs it so that’s why she had it/had to give permission. She sympathized with Dan melting.) Vlad was also hiding that Dan didn’t really mean anything he’s said about improving, and Dan was of course himself lying about it. That’s why Danny/Dani agreed to help(Dan does eventually become genuine, but this blurb will mostly focus on why Dan looks the way he does instead of his character development).

It worked, but Dan destabilizes so frequently that he goes through a lot of dejecto. His ghost form is really different from the clone, and has a lot more power than the clone can handle. The dejecto is also unable to be reproduced because 1) Vlad could not crack what tf Jack did to make it in the first place, and 2) There’s no way Jack would agree to make more(not that he even would remember how to replicate a failed experiment that would help ghosts). Giant problem for both Dan and Dani, because if they use it all, that’s it. They’ll melt into nothing.

This led Vlad to try another method to hopefully permanently stabilize Dan or at least reduce the amount of dejecto he needs(Vlad figures his ghost part should theoretically make up for the original stability problem of the Danny clones). Vlad started working on editing the clone to both age it up, and create a stable mix of his and Danny’s DNA that would allow the clone body to more closely resemble Dan’s ghost form and hopefully increase its capacity for ectoplasmic energy.

This was actually going pretty well and was slowly reducing the amount of dejecto Dan needed, but it wasn’t going fast enough. Vlad feels enough guilt over Dani by this point in time to be concerned for her well being, so once again is trying to find another alternate way to stabilize Dan faster. He comes to the insane conclusion to convert the ectoplasmic nature of Dan’s clone body into flesh. The bodies not matching wouldn’t matter then, and it obviously couldn’t melt anymore(note, the reason he doesn’t think to do this process directly to Dan’s ghost is because he still needs an anchor to not disappear from time. Being made of meat won’t fix that, so the best option is to keep him inhabiting a body. Even that aside, there could possibly be irreversable/undesirable side effects).

By the time Vlad is successful enough with testing to implement it with Dan’s body, he looks like what he looks in my design. He’s roughly 17-18, and really hates the idea of being stuck that age. However with a lot of convincing from Jazz and Vlad he finally agrees to allow Vlad to convert his clone body(convincing includes that he could finally go in public without any worrying(Jazz), he could have a bit of youth/being a kid to have fun with(Jazz), the obvious fact of not destabilizing(Jazz/Vlad), he’ll get a longer life(Vlad), and Vlad secretly mentions that Dan could get away with a lot more if he is young).

Vlad then goes ahead with it(Dan temporarily moves into another body to ensure only the clone body would be affected). Vlad is left pretty exhausted, but the conversion was a great success. Dan finds that it’s a bit tingly and is still like he’s possessing the body, however otherwise it feels pretty great.

Some later stuff:

- Dan finds that unlike before, he can turn into his ghost form halfa-style(not for too long though as he’ll start destabilizing time-wise).

- He eventually attends Casper High(of his own volition, though Jazz encourages it). Vlad puts him in Danny, Tucker, and Sam’s class. This is also when he gets his jacket; he joins the football team, but seeing as he still despises the popular kids he gets Sam to dye it black.

- He’s honestly a menace at Casper, especially to the popular kids, but Dash still thinks he’s cool 😭

Shamura - multi purpose

They learned to play a lot of instruments at a very young age, and passed their talent to their siblings. Shamura thought of teaching them only as a hobby, not fully knowing well that they'd form a band.

Shamura couldn't finish their education because they needed to be the one providing for their younger siblings. They work as a tailor.

But despite it all Shamura is still very wise and smart.

Shamura is 31.

Kallamar - keyboard and backup

kallamar's voice has always been my favourite because of how soft and melodic it sounded in the game. So not only is he a keyboardist, but also a backing vocalist too.

He's in a polyamorous marriage. Two wives and 1 husband. (Kallamar also has a son.)

And because of his family, kallamar couldn't attend in majority of their band practices

He's hard of hearing. Knows sign language.

Kallamar is 27.

Heket - bass

Heket can speak, but prefers to appear mute to the audience.

She speaks using sign language. Everyone in the band knows sign lanuage.

Heket is currently in college learning mechanical engineering.

She's bisexual. And currently dating someone. (Not revealing who just yet)

Sozo and Heket are very good friends. Enjoying tea time together and talking a lot of things. Mostly about mushrooms and family.

She's 22.

Leshy - drummer

Leshy and yellow cat (named Fian in this au) are dorm roommates and best friends. Some believe they are more than friends.

All his chaotic energy and anger goes to banging on those drums. Shamura thought it was meant to be.

Leshy studies biology. People didnt believe him when he revealed he's one of the top students in his college.

He has a really good memory. Memorized the drums layout immediately after losing his vision.

Hes 20.

Narinder - lead guitarist

Dropped out of college to focus on the band. Bad decision really.

Aym and Baal were the only nerdy fans to get close and have a sweet relationship with nari. Like he's their uncle.

Narinder and Lamb used to date when they were 20. They broke up because of miscommunication (and many more reasons). they are in good terms 3 years later.

Lamb had moved on from their relationship, but nari hasnt.

Lamb - Lead singer

Lamb can do a death metal scream, dont let that innocent look fool you.

They were recruited in the band by narinder and became the leader.

Ratau adopted Lamb

Lamb's songs are somewhat religious and has a cult vibe. But sometimes they focus about relationships and struggles.

Lamb and Goat are really great best friends. Maybe even more than best friends.

Small rough comic while I finish the next species introduction sheet.

For context, this is the Prectikar Obin and his human friend Zoe ! (Yeah, you better believe I've got characters too. Will prolly post more of them after the species intro sheets so you guys have more of a baseline for what the character is XD.

Obin is very comfortable being trans around humans (who raised him and who he’s lived around his whole life) but his first time presenting explicitly as such in front of other Prectikar was a bit stressful, since their widely held religious beliefs say that being that way is deviation from their creator god’s will (the idea that any of them who follow their old traditions (trads) are all phobic is a harmful stereotype , from a vocal minority of them, but still a concern since the sentiment that queerness is weird or wrong is still more coded into their culture than in current canon humans). He already shows his gender identity with a nose piercing rather than a chin one, and his large size and musculature caused by a combo of gigantism and working out also helps make him appear more masculine to both Prectikar and humans, but going as far as altering the throat sac during the season is a much bigger step —>

As i mentioned in their ref sheet, Prectikar have a breeding season in late winter, where males will lose the feathers on their throat to show off a bright yellow color on their skin (females don’t do this, and instead will grow longer feathers on their back and chest). A common way for trans Prectikar to deal with this (without medically transitioning/using hrt to prevent it from happening that way in the first place) is to cover the bald spot or pluck their throat sac and paint it yellow. without the right pheromones, it’s still easy for others to 'tell’ though, which is why he’s nervous. Zoe is there as the emotional support lesbian.

Also here’s a transcript, because my handwriting sucks ass and I decided to write some things phonetically since Obin has trouble pronouncing T, D, and G and also tend to combine words with those sounds with the next word (wi’the nehx’wer )
