Strays, a dabihawks drabble ~

a/n: technically a follow up to this, but it can also be read alone!

summary: After Touya starts serving his probation at Keigo's apartment, they take turns on brining home stray animals

It starts with a cat. 

It’s only been a couple of months since Touya moved out of the rehabilitation clinic and into Keigo’s new apartment when he brought back the first stray. 

To be honest Touya was already struggling with feeling like he was crowding Keigo in his home at that point, so when he found the loud, scraggly looking cat out in a random alley he was fully prepared to take it to a shelter and leave it there. 

Then the vets at the shelter told him she was deaf, and therefore she would have a hard time getting adopted. 

Well, shit. 

Touya’s vocal cords had been permanently damaged during his final battle in the war, and he relied on sign language or communicating in writing these days, and he knew the world wasn’t always friendly to people with different needs and disabilities. 

And so the cat came home with him. 

Keigo reacted much better than Touya had thought he would in all honesty. 

Luckily Keigo had a decent amount of knowledge about sign language from his work since it was something all heroes were expected to know the basics of, and after Touya had come to serve his probation with him he had gotten even better at it, so Touya could at least explain himself. 

“I took her to the shelter first, I promise,” Touya signed, and Keigo just looked at him with a puzzled expression as he petted the cat gently. 

“It’s okay, you don’t have to defend helping an animal in need, Tou,” Keigo said softly, and Touya huffed. 

“It’s not like that,” he signed, before he paused, then added;

“Well, actually, it kind of is, but only because she’s deaf.” 

Keigo’s face softened. 

“The poor thing was living on the streets alone without being able to hear?” he asked as he picked the cat up, who in turn purred happily in the hero’s arms. 

Touya nodded. 

“She’s kind of like me,” he signed, and Keigo’s eyes widened. 

“Don’t look at me like that, I just mean she could use someone like us, like what you did for me, is all,” Touya signed as his face grew redder by the second. 

“You’re absolutely right Hot-Stuff, so we should keep her, don’t you think?” Keigo said simply as he let the little cat down on the floor again and she slinked over to where Touya stood to rub against his legs. 

Touya hid his smile by sitting down to pet the cat.

“Shouto knows a lot about cats right?” Keigo mused, and Touya nodded. 

“We should facetime him, get him to give us a list of things we need and so on,” Keigo said more to himself than to Touya at this point it seemed. 

So that’s what they did. 

After a long conversation with Shouto (and several of his classmates that all demanded to see the cat) and a quick trip to the pet store, the little cat had settled in quite nicely.

Shouto had insisted on helping name her, and after quite a bit of back and forth they all had agreed to a fitting name; Little Void. 

Void for short.

Then came the dog. 

Now, this one was actually Keigo’s fault. 

After the war he had been an active part of a group trying to change hero society for the better, and one of these programs included a community outreach thing, which brought Keigo to a local shelter for the day. 

The idea had been that he would post some social media content with the pets, show himself working there for a day, trying to get more people to both volunteer and adopt instead of shopping for pets. 

And so Keigo met Casper. 

The dog was small, a chihuahua mix, the lady working at the shelter told him, and with its white fluffy fur and giant, nervous eyes, it looked quite strange. 

But that wasn’t why Keigo fell for the little creature.

It wasn’t until the shelter worker told him about the little guy’s backstory, one of abandonment that lead to extreme separation anxiety, that Keigo knew he wouldn’t be leaving this place alone that day. 

“Don’t be mad,” Keigo called out the second he opened the door to their home that night. 

Void, who had noticed the vibrations from the door opening and closing, let out a happy, loud noise as she saw Keigo, and Touya’s messy white head peaked around the corner from the kitchen. 

“Why would I be mad?” he signed, a curious look on his face.

Keigo grinned sheepishly as he opened his coat to reveal the tiny dog in his arms. 

Touya’s mouth fell open. 

“Surprise?” Keigo said with a nervous laugh, and Touya just shook his head slowly. 

“A dog, Keigo?” he signed, a look somewhere between shock and intrigue on his face. 

Keigo nodded.

“I know, I know, but he has PTSD, Touya!” Keigo explained, and Touya’s face softened as he slowly came closer. 

Keigo and Touya both sat down on the floor, and Keigo carefully placed the nervous little dog down. 

Touya stretched out a hand, and the dog strutted over to him to give him a sniff, before he quickly accepted the soft pets around his head.

“His name is Casper, and he was abandoned and has separation anxiety,” Keigo explained softly, feeling his heart nearly explode as he watched his boyfriend interact with their new family member. 

Touya looked up at him with a cheeky smile. 

“So what, this one is like you then?” he signed, and Keigo gasped indigantly. 

“If wanting to spend as much time as possible with my boyfriend means I have separation anxiety, sure!” he said with a small pout and Touya rolled his eyes. 

“Sure, whatever you need to tell yourself to sleep at night,” he signed, and Keigo stuck his tongue out at him.

Just then Void came slinking around the corner, and when she saw the tiny dog her big yellow eyes widened. 

“Don’t interfere,” Touya signed, and Keigo bit his lip. 

Easier said than done. 

Casper looked at the cat curiously, and when Void realized Touya was giving out pets she came closer eagerly, and while Keigo watched with bated breath, the two small creatures gave each other a quick sniff, and then that was that. 

Touya petted Void with one hand and Casper with the other, and smirked up at Keigo as if to dare him to say something. 

“That was… easy?” Keigo mumbled, and Touya smiled.

“So far, so good,” Touya signed, before quickly continuing to pet both the animals as they each demanded attention. 

Keigo smiled softly at the scene before him.

“So far, so good, indeed,” he agreed.

It doesn’t stop there. 

After the very successful social media campaign Keigo did for the shelter, both he and Touya start going there to volunteer regularly.

While insisting that Touya should come along didn’t get him off the hook of the separation anxiety accusations, Keigo was willing to deal with that to get to see his boyfriend light up whenever he spent time around the animals at the shelter. 

Touya was just as loving towards the pythons and tarantulas that sometimes came in as he was with puppies and kittens, and Keigo started to worry that his home would one day be filled with more types of animals than their local zoo. 

But seeing how safe and happy both Void and Casper had become in their home, Keigo wasn’t one to kick up a fuss. 

Not only had both the pets found safety and comfort with Keigo and Touya, they had also found a great friendship with each other, and honestly Keigo had never known how much joy and laughter such little creatures could bring to one's life. 

Getting to see Touya show more and more of that softer, patient side of him he had spent so long trying to hide was also incredibly special to Keigo, and he knew that if keeping on helping animals in need was what needed to happen for that to keep happening, he would love nothing more than to oblige. 

Anything for Touya, after all.

my beloved readers i have a confession to make

kats “i hate fandom OCs” dynam1ght has officially fallen into the camp of being kats “i have fandom OCs” dynam1ght

it is with a heavy heart that i declare this publicly in hopes that you will all indulge me when inevitably i post fic about this. i am ashamed and i hope you can forgive me (and read my work)

no but on a serious note let me explain: i have this big passionate hatred for main character fandom OCs because they often involve intensely OOC/fanon interpretations of canon characters (and that’s something i cannot stand). however i have, in the past, made background character OCs to supplement plot (family members, therapists, etc.) because stories need background too!

that is still mostly the case for what i have now (what @pinkedify and i have made together). these characters involve:

the #1 hawks fangirl (who, in our rp timeline, inevitably becomes dabihawks’ best friend and hawks’s social media manager)

hawks’s HPSC handler (+ a lot of her background… this is where fic writing will come into play big time. i have many scenes)

dabihawks kids (this surprised both of us considering our passionate distaste for fankid OCs. turns out it’s cool when we do it)

probably some others that i’m forgetting (a villain, some next-gen stuff, elaboration on natsuo’s family, etc)

right off the bat it’s important that you know: i will never write OCxCanon unless they are both background characters and their relationship makes sense for plot (or if in some rare circumstance i have legitimate reasoning to explore this concept with a main character… unlikely unless it’s gateway to a CanonxCanon ship)

this is absolutely NOT to disparage anyone who enjoys OC content in fandom. whatever floats ur goat is cool with me. i’m just insanely picky about characterization (as well we all should know by now) and i will never ever sacrifice canon characterization for the sake of including an OC. that does not happen in kats world!!!

i’m making this post in a haha funny kind of way, but i genuinely do want to have this out on the table for anyone who is familiar with me as a person or my opinions on fandom writing. i don’t often change my mind on topics like this, but i despise hypocrisy, so i think when i do have a big shift it’s important for me to acknowledge that! (we saw this with dabihawks, after all. it’s only fair.)

to anyone who may find this disappointing, i understand. you aren’t entitled to financial compensation because i’m broke, but we can absolutely mutually blame pink (aka robert67) for inflicting this disease on me by being a good writer and someone i can easily generate content with. i promise we’re actually good at this and pink’s assistance in character creation (+ design) has given me a lot more to explore with fic writing! cheers to that!

in short: this is just my way of saying “turns out i like this when i do it” as i tend to for most things. it’s worth mentioning because A) no hypocrisy here and B) i am planning a hawks-centric fic that will involve a lot of backstory for him (and thus some OCs to supplement plot!) and it’s necessary we all understand where i’m coming from

thanks to everyone reading and i love you all (especially those of you loyally reading/giving love to my fics. gold stars to you). idk when my next fic will be up but i hope you’re able to read and i look forward to seeing you there! in the meantime don’t be shy interacting i love talking to people :D

It wasn’t a game at first. The first time you, Keigo, and Dabi had played this little game of cat and mouse, you were trying to run away. You had ended up escaping through a window. Unluckily for you though, Dabi and Keigo’s mansion was in the middle of no where. It was surrounded by a forest in all ways. So you ran.

You ran through the forest as fast as you can while you knew they were chasing after you. You kept doing this, kept escaping, however you weren’t doing it to actually try and run away. You were just doing it for the chase, you loved the acceleration you got from them chasing you.

After Dabi and Keigo began to realize you weren’t actually trying to get away, they decided to make it fun for them too. You ever was able to catch you first got to do whatever they want with you. And you really enjoyed it.

Keigo glances into your room, smirking when he notices that you’re not in there. “Not here” Keigo smiles, turning to Dabi, noticing the way his eyes light up. “No flying” Dabi comments, wanting to keep the game fair.

You run through the woods, trying to keep your breath even. You stop for a moment, looking behind you wondering if they’re already trying to get you. You know they’re most likely coming to get you.

Last time Dabi ended up winning. Keigo is very determined to win this time, he hasn’t won a whole lot ever since Dabi implemented the rule of no flying as it was cheating. But he was absolutely determined to win. He was so tired of simply having to listen as Dabi got to do as he wanted with you because he won.

You run through the woods, listening to the leaves crunch underneath your feet. Then you begin hearing more crunching. Not from you though. You quickly glance behind you, not seeing which one it is, only seeing his shadow. You giggle a bit as you run, trying to speed up your pace.

He was larger than you though, and he was built. So he was able to catch up to you pretty quickly. He tackles you to the ground, sitting on top of your chest. He’s caught your wrists in his hands. You smile at his smirk.

“Caught you” Keigo says, leaning closer to you while still on top of you. Dabi throws his head back with a frustrated sigh, he was so close! Keigo helps you up before turning to Dabi with a smug expression on his face.

“I win. Now, time to deal with you, birdy”

Now that we have reached the last chapter of the year. It is time to do a 2020 roll call of what I like to call, “State of the Shippers”:

1. IzuOcha. Status: Placated.

-IzuOcha’s could celebrate several cute tidbits throughout the year. Mini moments as they say.

Anime Highlights: The OVA’s came in clutch with moments for shippers all around and IzuOcha is no exception. We got a cute tidbit where Izuku and Ochako bumped into each other and were flustered.

Manga Highlights: Christmas kept on giving to this fandom as the AM doll Izuku gave Ochako made many appearances. A cute fist bump between the two was also exchanged and Mina was right there bouncing with y’all.

Heroes Rising: Izuku super man carried Ochako to safety. And was Angy she was injured. Fans could enjoy the small Lois Lane moment.

Troubling Signs?: Ochako said “I would like to be excluded from this narrative” when it comes to her feelings for Deku. She’s a hero damnit! So if they are in for something, probably won’t be while they are still in school.

II. DabiHawks. Status: Yikes.

- Dabi and Hawk’s very public breakup set this fandom in disarray but also kind of disayay?

Anime Highlights: None yet. This fandom was cruelly cock blocked by Bones. Sorry DabiHawks stans.

Manga Highlights: Where to begin, my goodness. With these fans, I guess the good and the bad is a plus in this homoerotic double agent relationship. We have the notion that Dabi may have known Hawks when they were kids, which may be a positive? Hori sure loves his childhood friends. Other than that. The GIRLS WERE FIGHTIN’. Hawks is now permanently scarred by Dabi and I don’t think it was kinky folks. Tokoyami inserted himself in the middle to White Knight Hawks, Dabi broke up with him via YT expose and overall, shippers could anguish in the absolute MESS that this ship endured this year. But I’m sure that’s part of the appeal. So...yay?

Heroes Rising: They were both in it.

Troubling Signs?: The entire relationship is a troubling sign which again, is part of the appeal. Maybe Hawks will cuddle up with Dabi’s father after the war. That’s troubling! Speaking of...

III. EndHawks. Status: Yearning and Burning.

-If there’s one thing Endeavor couldn’t stop worrying about, it was his hot (in more ways than one) new side piece who probably should have looked at the fine print when signing a contract to be a recurring guest star on “Keeping up with the Todoroki’s”.

Anime Highlights: A fateful meeting finally in high definition for all our eyes to see! Hawks’s unwavering support of his biggest hero was endearing to watch and their shenanigans together spurred the anime onlies to finally jump on the biggest May-December ship in the series.

Manga Highlights: Endeavor’s admiration and concern for Hawks seeped through the pages as we entered our most exciting arc in the manga yet. Fate split these two up yet entwined their downfall together. And that Fate’s name was Dabi...or should I say ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️ or should I just say Touya!

Heroes Rising: “Don’t bite my head off, Endeavor.” Geez, can you flirt a little less loud Hawks?

Troubling Signs?: They say never meet your heroes and Hawks is in for a rude awakening. We shall see just how deep his admiration runs or if Endeavor’s past will split our dynamic duo up for good.

IV: TodoDeku. Status: “Precious”

-Shoto’s “Midoriya is in Danger” radar was highlighted in both manga and anime. 4th User’s quirk, who?

Anime Highlights: “Midoriya hasn’t returned yet.” “Where’s Midoriya?” “Midoriya! Grab my hand!” “Have some of my Soba Midoriya.” Shoto gets it. His emotional support friend is a danger magnet. TodoDeku’s also enjoyed tiny tidbits in the OVA such as a hand grabbing scene. Gotta hold tight to those crumbs.

Manga Highlights: Two Words. “Precious Friend.” Deku comes in w/o arms or legs fighting for Shoto and Shoto’s honor. These two spent the entire year worried sick about each other, and going against all odds to save each other. Precious Friends indeed. TDDK fans ate.

Heroes Rising: Shoto kicks some dog ass and then faints thinking of Deku (and Bakugo but shh. Let the shippers rejoice.) On the bright side, we have a 3rd movie coming featuring “The Three Musketeers” so shippers of TdDk can HOLD TIGHT to what’s to come.

Troubling Signs?: Shoto still doesn’t know about OFA and he’s gonna have LOTS of questions after this arc. Will Deku finally tell him? If not, it could make or break the ship.

V. TodoBaku. Status: “Shining through the city with a little funk and soul.”

-Who knew the greatest comedy duo we needed was Shoto and his hot headed “friend” or not friend? It still remains unclear to Shoto. Regardless, these two had a fun year.

Anime Highlights: “I wanna see your cute face”, disco dancing, and more fun in the provisional license training. Plus the OVA added some cute moments between the two such as Bakugo staying behind to save Todoroki during a dangerous excercise and his adorable plan neatly animated for us. I’d say TodoBaku’s really were resurgent and energized this year!

Manga Highlights: Shoto, that is not how you properly Catch a Kacchan, I’m sorry. But at least you did it you mad lad. As with Deku, Shoto spent the year worried sick about Bakugo. While the anime let us have our fun, these two were suffering in the manga.

Heroes Rising: Again, Shoto put a dog down and then fainted with Bakugo on his mind (and Deku but we ignore that. Shush.) TodoBaku’s have the 3rd movie to look forward to which is bound to have some amazing content!

Troubling Signs?: They have a lot of trauma to deal with. And a lot of Deku to worry about. I also imagine Shoto will be hurt about being left out of the OFA secret. We shall see what 2021 has to offer.

VI. KiriMina. Status: Unbreakable.

-Changing your hairstyle to match the gal who inspired you in middle school? Sorry y’all but if Mina were a guy, I’d say that’s gay af.

Anime Highlights: We got that backstory Bois. Red Riot’s origin might as well make him be called Pink Riot. Again with Hori and the childhood friends though I wouldn’t exactly call them friends. They just went to the same middle school but Kirishima was highly influenced by Mina’s Chivalrous spirit! A ship is born!

Manga Highlights: The influence is mutual! Mina creates a move based on Kirishima’s unbreakable and we all let out a collective “awwww”. Also in the war arc, we got Kirishima making sure Mina’s chivalrous spirit shines through right into Gigantomachia’s mouth! KiriMina may just be the unsung MVP’s of this arc.

Heroes Rising: They were in it.

Troubling Signs?: I can’t think of a single one. KiriMina’s can enjoy a peaceful sailing.

VII: KiriBaku. Status: Crumb Collectors.

-2020 was an uneventful year for KiriBaku but Bones made sure there were crumbs aplenty! Thank God for OVA’s!

Anime Highlights: KiriBaku’s did thrive in one episode! Kirishima reflects on the sludge incident and evolves his quirk based on inspiring words from Bakugo! Hooray! KiriBaku’s can thrive in their blossoming friendship. The OVA also has Kirishima (and Kaminari but shh) once again following Bakugo’s lead when it comes to the training excercise. How can you not? He’s so manly!

Manga Highlights: Not gonna lie. There is nothing much here this year. I did find a teeny tiny flake in Aizawa’s flashback. Kirishima and Bakugo are sitting next to each other. Oh! And at the hot pot gathering, Bakugo sits next to Kirishima! Eat your crumbs KiriBaku’s! There’s always next year!

Heroes Rising: Kirishima hangs with a lazy Bakugo and delivers the most hilarious line in the whole movie. “Silly Bakugo, there won’t be villains here!” Hahah... Silly Bakugo. Oh you~ KiriBaku’s can inhale the fact that those two sure love to hover around each other!

Troubling Signs?: With great crumbs come little responsiblity. No trouble if there’s no content! 🤔

VIII: KamiJirou. Status: Singing their hearts out 🎶

-If there’s any ship that’s coming close to canonization, I think this is it, folks! “Think of the person most important to you!” Can’t argue with Midnight!

Anime Highlights: Kaminari does non stop encouraging of Jirou and her hobbies! He works super hard to learn guitar for her sake! We love a king who can encourage his queen!

Manga Highlights: Kaminari thinks of the most important person to him and surprise! It’s Jirou! All of the feels can commence.

Heroes Rising: They were in it!

Troubling Signs?: Kaminari does love his women. And men. Kaminari overall is a huge flirt. But Jirou appears to have his heart strings. ❤️

IX: BakuDeku. Status: Rising. 👑

-Alternative Statuses include Winning, Thriving, Soaring. It’s just been non stop content this year. 2020 is truly the year for BakuDeku. The shippers can rejoice.

Anime Highlights: Three words. Be. My. Cane. The OVA’s helped fan the flames of the BkDk hearts with a surprise! Deku tops! Not only that, we got a lovely shoulder tap of encouragement in the canon material. While in season 4, Deku’s primary focus was Eri. Bakugo and Deku still had their moments to be hella gay.

Manga Highlights: Where do I even begin? I guess we’ll just cut to the chase with Bakugo Katsuki: Rising. We finally saw Bakugo’s true feelings manifest for Deku and if getting stabbed for him isn’t the ultimate showing of love, then idk what is. BakuDeku’s rounded out the year with the Volume 29 cover AND the volume 29 cover drafts to eat at our heart strings. Overall, their relationship got the spotlight in the manga this year. And we’re bound to start 2021 with a dramatic confrontation. Hand holding seems to be the key with these two and it didn’t stop with Heroes Rising...speaking of.

Heroes Rising: The entire movie. Like....yeah. That’s it. [OP, your bias is showing. You have to be SPECIFIC.] {But random criticizer in my head, if I lay out the entire plot of the movie, my post will be too long} [OP....] UGHHHH Okay okay. The POPSICLE MELTING. THE HAND HOLDING. Study Sessions (DabiHawks/TouKei)

Keigo knows a lot about Touya, but not the fact that he's smart. He doesn't know that Touya would intentionally fail his quizzes just to have him teach in the late afternoons.

"It's not difficult, Touya," Keigo says as he writes an activity for Touya to answer in his notebook.

"Yeah, that's why I failed," Touya says with his elbow propped on the table and his chin resting on his palm while watching Keigo.

Keigo rolls his eyes after hearing Touya's answer, "that's because you weren't listening,"

"He was boring. Just hearing his voice makes me wanna go to sleep," Touya says and slumps against the chair, "besides, I have you to teach me after lectures,"

"I don't get paid for this," Keigo says and pouts. He runs his hand through his hair and sighs, "look, you have to learn on your own. I have to look for a job next week,"

Touya stares, "why?"

"I'm not from a wealthy family like yours, Touya," Keigo answers and stares him in the eye.

"I'll pay you for teaching me," Touya says immediately. Keigo laughs and leans on the table, "My rate is high, you know,"

Touya scoffs, "I don't really care. Give me your rate, and I'll pay you. Just keep teaching me,"

Keigo shakes his head, "I was kidding. I can teach you for free even if I get a part-time job. Just not as early as this,"

Touya furrows his brows, "but that means lesser hours,"

"It's going to be fine. You're a fast learner. An hour or two should be enough,"

Touya grits his teeth, "what if it isn't?"

"You can pay a tutor," Keigo shrugs as if it wasn't a big deal. Well, it probably isn't to him but to Touya, it is.

"I don't want a tutor," Touya says and places his hand on the notebook to stop Keigo from writing, "why should I look for one when you're already here?"

Keigo leans on the chair after sighing, "I'm not comfortable taking money from you, Touya. You're my friend. It's weird,"

Friend. Touya notes as he tries to remind himself that that's all he has, friendship.

"You're not taking money from me, Keigo. I'm paying you just compensation for the time you spent teaching me," Touya says, but Keigo still shakes his head in refusal.

"it's still a no, Touya," Keigo says and moves the notebook towards Touya for him to answer.

Touya stares at it. He doesn't need this right now. What he needs is to convince Keigo to accept his offer.

"C'mon, Keigo," Touya says and pouts. He bats his lashes and acts as cute as he can, but all he receives is Keigo messing with his hair, "it's still a no,"

"What if we go with your set up and if it doesn't work, you accept my offer," Touya says, he stares at Keigo with hopeful eyes, "I'll tell you after you answer that,"

Touya nods, "okay, make the right decision, Keigo,"

Touya finishes his activity within a few minutes and slides the notebook towards Keigo, "this should tell you that I can only understand topics if it's you teaching me,"

Keigo rolls his eyes after returning Touya's notebook to him with a perfect mark.

"Fine, let's go with a month," Keigo agrees, making Touya grin.

"Right," Touya says and stands up, "come on, let's get you your yakitori before I drive you home,"

Keigo beams, and it makes Touya smile.

After a week, Keigo finally starts working before and after classes. He'd usually arrive at school tired and hungry that's why Touya would always wait for him in the lecture hall with a paper bag of sandwich and a cup of coffee.

"Your bags are growing darker with each passing day. Are you sure you're sleeping well?" Touya asks after brushing Keigo's fringe to the side.

"I don't know to be honest," Keigo says and hurriedly eats his food before their professor enters the hall, "I've been so busy with work and school that I keep losing track of time,"

Touya presses his lips together to hold back his tongue. He couldn't understand why Keigo's so stubborn about accepting his offer.

"Take care of yourself," Touya says instead and hands Keigo a bottle of water.

Keigo nods and shoves half of the sandwich in his mouth when their professor enters the class.

"I'll see you later tonight at the cafe," Keigo says as he fixes all of his stuff. He was rushing to go to work, and Touya's a little annoyed that he doesn't get to spend more time with Keigo, but he tries his best to understand.

"Wait," Touya says and grabs Keigo's hand when he was about to leave the hall.

"Touya, I don't have time for anything. If I don't-"

Keigo doesn't get to finish what he's saying when Touya gives him a paper bag, "take these with you. They're vitamins and snacks. If you're going stay up late, then you better make sure to take care of yourself,"

Touya couldn't understand the emotion that passes by Keigo's face, but he's content with the smile Keigo gives him, "thanks, but I really have to go,"

Touya lets go and watches as Keigo runs away.

Touya arrives at the cafe an hour earlier. He already ordered Keigo's favorite dessert and beverage to make sure he gets to eat. He was on his phone when he hears Keigo bang his head on the table.

"Tired?" Touya asks. Keigo raises his head and stares at him before nodding. He doesn't say anything and silently pulls out his notes, papers, and notebooks.

"What was I supposed to teach you again?" Keigo asks. He doesn't usually ask Touya because he keeps it in mind, but it seems like the stress was taking a toll on him.

"It's fine. You don't have to teach me anything today," Touya says and puts down his phone. He slides his quiz paper to Keigo and gives him a small smile.

"I got a perfect score. You don't need to teach me," Touya says but what he doesn't expect is the genuine bliss on Keigo's face when he sees it.

"I knew you were smart! You just needed to listen to the professor," Keigo says and smiles at Touya, "I'm so proud of you,"

Touya doesn't say anything. He just nods because the warmth blooming in his chest is something he can never put into words.

"What do you want to do?" Keigo asks as he takes a sip of his drink.

"What?" Touya asks.

"To celebrate, I mean, it's not a lot, but I'm really proud of you," Keigo says and smiles, "so, tell me what you want to do,"

"We don't have to do anything. You can use the spare time to study," Touya says and smiles before pulling out a few books.

"But we do that every day," Keigo says, "why don't we let loose and just do something you want today?"

Touya doesn't say anything as he tries to think of something decent to do, "go to dinner with me,"

Keigo furrows his brows, "are you sure that's all you want?"

Touya nods, "it's more than enough,"

Ever since that night, Touya didn't try to fail his subjects. He wanted to see Keigo smile, and if that means passing every quiz and exam, then he's willing to put in the time and effort to study just to hear Keigo say he's proud and happy. The deal was over, too, but Touya would always meet up with Keigo at the cafe to review together.

"I think I'm becoming stupid," Keigo says as he pulls on his hair, "I can't understand anything,"

Touya looks at Keigo's book and sees that it's been randomly highlighted, "Which part do you want me to teach you?"

Keigo raises his head and shows him a small smile, "I didn't think we'd reach a day where we exchange roles,"

"Well, you're busy with work," Touya says, "I have too much time to review,"

"You're right," Keigo says and slumps on the table, "I'm so tired,"

Touya runs his hand through Keigo's hair, "take a nap. Nothing will go through your brain if you force yourself,"

"But I still-"

"Keigo, just go to sleep. I'll make new notes for you to study," Touya says and smiles.

"But-"

"No buts Keigo," Touya sternly says and takes all of Keigo's things as he starts to take note.

Keigo couldn't do anything about so he just smiles and says, "thank you, Touya,"

Keigo silently sleeps on the table while Touya makes the notes. Once he was done, he stares at Keigo and lets his chin rest on the table, "I love you so much, Keigo,"

Keigo wakes up and sees Touya sleeping in front of him. He runs his hand through Touya's hair and stares at the notes sitting beside him, "you're not good for the heart, Touya. Keep doing all these, and I'll fall deeper,"

Keigo then silently starts to study after a few minutes of staring at Touya's sleeping figure. He was too engrossed in reading that he didn't notice Touya waking up.

"What time is it?" Touya asks after waking up.

Keigo raises his head and looks at the time on his phone, "it's already past midnight,"

"You should've woke me up," Touya says and stretches, "you need time to sleep. You still have work in the morning,"

"You looked adorable while sleeping. I couldn't find it in me to wake you up," Keigo mindlessly says while fixing his things.

"You're going to be the death of me, Keigo," Touya whispers.

"What?" Keigo asks and turns around, but Touya shakes his head, "it's nothing. Let's go. I'll drive you home,"

Keigo nods and follows Touya to his car. As Touya drives, he notices that Keigo fell asleep while leaning on the window, "you aren't even doing anything, but you're already making my heart leap,"

Touya stops in front of Keigo's apartment, but he doesn't wake him up immediately. He stares at Keigo and contemplates about confessing, but after some time, he shakes his head, "I'll content myself with what we have," he whispers to himself before waking Keigo up.

"You're home,"

okay. so the thing about my writing is that i never fucking finish it, and a lot of my wips are just a jumble of unconnected scenes. technically, i have more than 20 (unfinished) stories, but i’ll only be posting the ones that a) actually Have A First Line, and b) i hope to finish at some point in the distant future.

1. blue seas to mulberry fields (the untamed, nhs-centric, the only half decent fic i’ve ever published)

Jin Guangyao is dead.

He’s dead, run through by Lan Xichen’s sword, crushed under a hundred tonnes of rubble and debris. He is gone.

Nie Huaisang knows this. He does. But one man’s death is nothing compared to a lifetime. Compared to years of shouting for Meng Yao when he needed help. Compared to years of calling him San-ge. Compared to a decade of planning revenge.

2. theon greyjoy and the horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day(s) (working title) (game of thrones/asoiaf, theon-centric)

Theon doesn’t know when, exactly, his status in Winterfell changes from prisoner to ward.

The first time he is a prisoner is during the Siege of Pyke. He isn’t a prisoner of Winterfell, not yet. But a prisoner is a prisoner is a prisoner all the same, regardless of if he’s locked in a cell or trapped in his own home.

3. take a chance, remake the world (game of thrones/asoiaf, starks-centric)

Two years, four months, and seventeen days after his coronation, King Brandon Stark, Bran the Broken, first of his name, wakes with a purpose. His first true purpose in a long time. He must go today.

4. your place in the family of things (game of thrones/asoiaf, sansa and theon-centric)

Sansa has always prided herself on her composure. When she was a child, she had spent hours in front of the mirror perfecting her curtsy and her posture and her politest smile. She always says please and thank you and she knows her manners better than any of her siblings ever did. She does all her homework and raises her hand in class when she knows the answer (which is almost always) and earns A-stars in almost every test. She never loses her temper or complains about her workload. Her parents spent a lot of time and money to get her and her sister into this school. She knows that, and she’s grateful for it.

She’s certainly not the kind of girl who breaks down sobbing over her French notes. And yet.

5. untitled whisper of the heart au (the untamed, sangcheng and nie bros-centric)

Nie Huaisang would like to say, for the record, that he has the worst brother in the world.

Objectively, he is aware that worse people exist. Meng Yao, for one. Jin Guangshan definitely makes the cut. Jin Zixun– well, Huaisang hasn’t talked to him since the time he punched him in the face in junior middle school, but he’s sure he’s still an asshole. Maybe Jins just suck, like, as a rule. (Excluding Zixuan. Except, actually, he is kind of a dick. He’s working on it, though, so Huaisang will cut him some slack.)

But as a brother? Mingjue is the worst.

6. bastards anonymous (working title, obviously) (game of thrones/asoiaf, baratheon bastards-centric)

Gendry should have known that Secret Santa with Arya was a bad idea. It’s their first time including her in the present-giving, and they were very clear about the five pound limit. Not a one of them earns above minimum wage, except Arya. She doesn’t have a job, but her allowance is more than Gendry gets paid in a month.

7. the todorokis gtfo (working title) (bnha, todorokis and hawks-centric)

Fuyumi is not a good daughter.

She is not like Shouto. She is not the prodigy, the golden child, the future hero. She doesn’t have a quirk so strong it nearly burnt down the house when it first manifested, a quirk so perfectly balanced that even his appearance reflects it. She doesn’t have a destiny laid out in front of her, ready to be followed like a gold-paved road.

She isn’t a bad child, either, she hopes. Not like Natsuo. They might both be the middle children, in a way (although she’s technically tied for eldest with Touya, she is six minutes younger than him), both the failures, both invisible, but she’s content with that. Natsuo isn’t. She tries to balance out his anger at their father, to get him to just keep his head down and do as he’s told, but the more time he spends with Touya, the more rebellious he becomes.

But, then, she supposes it makes sense, given his circumstances. After all, Fuyumi might not have the unbeatable quirk their father dreamed of, but at least she has one.

8. show me where my armour ends (bnha, dabihawks, because i refuse to let go of this ship and i hate canon)

If there’s a better end to a day of hero work than a shower hot enough to turn his skin as bright red as his wings, Hawks hasn’t found it yet. Being a hero might be hard, but it’s damn worth it for the feeling of washing away grit and blood under scalding water, if for nothing else. After the day he’s had, he’s more than earned it.

9. untitled modern au (game of thrones/asoiaf, theon and the starks centric)

For all that his children seem to believe otherwise, Ned Stark is not an idiot. He has five kids, a sixth on the way, and he has learned something about being a parent in the past eight years.

He is not fooled when Robb comes down for dinner five minutes early, smiling brightly, and says, “Hi, Daddy! Do you want me to set the table?”

Robb had stopped calling him and Cat Mummy and Daddy at the start of the school year, because no-one calls their parents that anymore, Dad, come on, I’m in Primary Four now. He only uses it now when he wants something. And he never offers to set the table.

10. houses out of cardboard boxes (voltron (i know, i know, i’m sorry), adashi)

Adam isn’t nervous, per se. Adam Wadekar doesn’t do nervous. It’s just that this is his first time at a new school since he started teaching, so he may be a little out of practise

(Also, he’s back in California for the first time in years, after vowing to never return. But, whatever. Not the point.)

11. untitled character study (pjo, will solace-centric)

As a rule, Will is nonviolent. Between a staunchly pacifist mom, a complete lack of athletic ability, and a pathological urge to please people, he doesn’t think he could hurt another person if he tried.

But when you walk into your kitchen to see a man with goat legs and two teenagers holding swords, all common sense sort of goes out the window.

hmm. i feel like all of them have a similar.... vibe, but i can’t pin down a pattern, per se. i tend to open with a fact about a character and then some kind of contradiction, a lot of the time. i think my favourites are probably blue seas to mulberry fields, your place in the family of things, the todorokis gtfo, and the will solace one. (mainly blue seas, though. i will fucking finish that fic if it Kills Me)

You could get a lot of dabihawks fans to read something with endeavor that's not going to be the issue. This-- "save someone they all care very much about but who they all know might be beyond saving?" this mindset is going to be the problem. Dabi has done many crimes he needs to face up to but viewing him as a "person beyond saving" is completely ignoring the fact that he is also a victim striking back at abusive systems.

okay, here we go:

let me preface this with one very important fact about this story idea: if i’m writing from the perspectives of endeavor, rei, and hawks, the writing is going to be extremely biased. i have my opinions that are not colored by the fact that touya/dabi is a real person with a real personal connection to me, but hawks and rei and enji do not have that luxury!

my original post was lamenting (jokingly) that endeavor content has a very small target audience, and throwing dabihawks in there makes it even smaller, but this is the real crux of it: fandom tends to dislike unreliable narration, or fails to recognize it at all, leading to hateful comments and accusations of, like, abuse apologism etc etc. -- which is fine, i’m an adult and i can handle a few vitriolic people on the internet, it’s just like... a thing i have to accept going in, you know?

(i should note that a lot of my wording in the tags was already colored by the mindset of rei, enji, and hawks’ perspectives, and not necessarily mine)

ANYWAY, let’s get into the meat of this, i.e. the characters and themes, which is what we’re all here for:

i respectfully disagree! i don’t think dabi wants to be saved at all. i think he wants hero worshipping torn down, i think he wants everyone to see exactly how awful their “number one hero” really was, and with the context of the last few manga chapters, i think he also wants to be recognized as a force to be reckoned with. he’s almost the “you want a villain? fine, i’ll show you one” trope, except it’s “you think i can’t be a hero? fine, i’ll be the scariest villain you’ve ever goddamn seen” which is just.... delicious, narratively

the only reason i use the word “save” is, again, because of enji and rei and hawks. idk if you happen to have read my endeavor time loop fic, but i summed it up pretty neatly with a conversation between rei and enji here:

(“He’s done… some very, very terrible things. Things he’ll have to answer for. But… Enji, he’s still our son. As long as he’s alive, our son’s still out there.” // “You think we can save him,” Enji says. He’s not sure he believes it. He wants to, he desperately wants to, but he’s not sure he does. // “Maybe,” she shrugs. “Maybe not. But we’re his parents. We have no choice but to try.”)

in the context of this other story that only exists in my head so far, they know they might not be able to get through to touya. they know they might not be able to convince him to stop killing and stop all this destruction etc etc, and they know that if it comes down to having to kill him -- if, to borrow the words of the love of my life captain america a.k.a. sam wilson, he’s not the kind you save but the kind you have to stop -- then that’s their responsibility too. as his parents. as the people who sent him down this path in the first place.

and then, you know, hawks shows up. because he’s a stubborn bastard and i love him

catch me SCREAMING over this because YES! EXACTLY! this is exactly what i find so fascinating about this concept! you have endeavor who’s said “i’m not looking for forgiveness, only atonement” and that was before the touya reveal, so by now he’s more than aware of the irreversible damage he’s done. he knew he couldn’t ask for forgiveness from natsuo and he knows he can’t ask for forgiveness from touya. then you parallel that with rei, and how shouto’s chosen to forgive her, and how she (maybe, partially) has chosen to forgive enji, and THEN you have hawks, who forgave endeavor from the word “go” even though he’s shut his own parents out for all the damage they did, and then you have all three of them wanting so badly to be able to forgive dabi/touya for all the terrible things he’s done, and..... hhhhh it makes me INSANE, DUDE

(quick note: i personally believe dabi didn’t... actually care about twice. i know it’s up for interpretation, and that’s mine. on the flipside i think hawks feels very, very, very guilty over what he did, even if it was necessary, and in fact, a moment of him admitting that to rei is the only rock solid scene of this fic that i have in my head so far.)

i would argue it’s both, actually! i’ve never read dabihawks content so idk the fandom consensus, but to me, the interesting thing about this relationship is that it’s incredibly toxic from both sides. hawks wants to get through to him somehow and talk him down (we’ve seen this mindset when he tried to talk twice down), and dabi does not want to be talked down and, in fact, would see the attempt itself as another act of betrayal. which again, makes me INSANE and is another reason i’m so fascinated by these dynamics

The thing i noticed when i look at dabihawks fanart n read through your expiriences with the meta part of the fandom is that a lot of people seem to lean on dabi side of the dabihawks conflict. Like its hawks who has to make changes to earn dabi. Its hawks whos turned it a villain, its hawks who forgives or even thanks dabi for what he did. Actually i dont think ive ever seen art ro read a fic (but to be fair im extremly selective in fic reading) where dabi is the one to apologise and try to earn hawks

N i think this sorta makes sense because for a lot of dabihawks shippers, dabi is probably their favorite out of the two. That also makes sense cuz hes been around longer n has appealing design so it makes sense that people would try and fit hawks around dabis narrative instead of vice versa. They find dabi more likable n more interesting so its his side they want to explore.

I feel that this is completely different for me because hawks is my no 1 best boy. Like before hawks bnha was the kind of show where i would say 'oh i like the characters but none of them are mine fav' like id say shouto, shinsou or jirou were my favs mostly based on aesthetics or recognizing pieces i usually like in characters in them, but those pieces never being strong enough for me to say this is my fav bnha character like id say izaya is my favorite durarara character or ranpo is my favorite bungo stray dogs character. And then bam. Bird Time. Like when i first saw hawks i think the most i thought was 'damn thats a cool design' but as we got more of him he very quickly became the character i loved most and wanted to see more off.

Dabi on the other hand i was never really interested in. Like he was cool n all but overall i didnt really care for him until the touya theory dropped and until dabihawks. For me hes perfectly fine, i dont dislike him or anything but i like him most when hes involved with other characters i like, like Todorokis n Hawks. Like even now after a good while on Dabihawks juice id still stay hes not my fav villain. That would probably be Toga, Geten (as little as we get of him) and honestly mr compress just for being an evil magician i need more mr compress

So the fact that hawks is my fav means that unlike ppl whos fav is dabi i focus more on how can dabi earn hawks. How can dabi get better, would he ask for help, would he quit villainy, would he apologize. And most importantly would hawks accept him back.

Makes me feel like amongst dabihawks shippers theres simply two different streams that would probably get annoyed by each others content n feel like the other is spoiling their fav character.

Like i sure as fuck get annoyed when artists i follow for dabihawks start talking about how hawks should have been a villain n how hawks is actually an evil murderer while the league has a point n is poiting out that the heroes will save only those who dont fight back. No really thats a take i heard, lets just forget muscular, mustard, moonfish, gentle, the yakuza and ALL FOR FUCKING ONE who were all arrested perfectly fine without fighting back. But of course these people dont mean saved as in arrested, forced to rexamin their own behavior and work to be better people, they mean saved as in i want my favs to be coddled and patted on the back and instantly forgiven and even told they were right all along and they are the most special a good. Geeze

I fuckin went off subject so hard this is less of an ask n more of a rant now. The only good thing about seeing all those bad takes is that every time i see one my motivation to write a dabihawks story where dabi faces concequences, and they actually have to hash the whole villain hero ideologies thing out, grows stronger

...I’m sorry, I wanted to answer this sooner but wanted to get the smaller asks out of the way first T-T

But yes! That’s been my experience when it comes to Dabihawks as well. Not many people focus on Hawks side of the conflict and instead tend to make him the agressor in the relationship when they want conflict (it always tends to be Hawks who upsets Dabi for example, or Hawks will say something insensitive towards Dabi or do something that upsets Dabi). Not many people treat them as a pair, they just tend to focus on the Dabi angst more then the Hawks angst or angst experienced by the both of them (I like to call that the Dabias and many people suffer from it in the Dabihawks shipping fandom I’ve found).

I like reading stories like this too, from time to time, but I’m just tired of all the stories or comics or fan art being Hawks the bad person in the relationship with him having to apologise and make it up to Dabi. Especially when in canon it’s Dabi that has treated Hawks pretty terribly (he almost got him killed by lying to him about when he was going to release High End and he almost killed him during the raid, meanwhile Hawks hasn’t anything as horrible towards Dabi except hold him at knife point but that was more for his own protection then to threaten Dabi).

I feel like I’m just bitching because people don’t wrote fanfiction to my specifications but you’d be grumpy too if your favourite character always gets the short end of the stick in work that is supposed to be about the pair of them being a couple.

Also don’t get me started on the stories that make Hawks “see the light” and join Dabi’s side after he maimed him, some even going far as to have him thank Dabi for what he did. It just reeks of the Dabias and I absolutely hate. Let Hawks experience trauma you cowards, especially trauma that we know was caused by the hands of dear old Dabi.

I wish more work would try to reform Dabi as a person instead of having Hawks become a villain (especially because works that usually have Hawks become a villain tend to ignore the horrifying plans the League want to commit or acknowledged them but fool themselves into thinking Hawks would actually be down for all the BS). I think it’s more interesting to see a bad person try to change, it’s why I’ve enjoyed Endeavor’s character arc despite not liking him as a character. Like sure, I don’t mind bastardization arcs too but they have to be done with character I can see it happening too and Hawks isn’t that type of person.

(In fact it’s such an interesting source of conflict that Dabi and Hawks are very resolved people. They’re not likely to change their ways for anything but I don’t really see people explore that even though it’s the perfect source for angst).

I’m so tired of villain stans who wanted Hawks to become evil (and then wanted him to validate their murder favs). I want more stories where Hawks puts his foot down and Dabi realises he wants to be a better person for him (it’s in those stories I could actually see him bonding with his family again too because right now Dabi is a man with no qualms with breaking his family apart for his revenge).

I just wished more people would let Dabi face the consequences of his actions too. Like if you’re going to make Hawks suffer for what he did (even though I roll my eyes at the thought) then Dabi who has done much worse should be suffering ten times over.

Really long ask - Part 1: Hi, sorry for this long rant, but I just wanted to vent since I saw this latest story posted on AO3 and I am restraining myself on commenting on their story so I'm just letting my anger out here about it and other issues regarding fan-depiction of Hawks. It's vaguely related to your post on how DabiHawks or Dabi+Hawks stories make it all about Dabi and always made Hawks out to be the one who starts the problems in their relationship or is the one trying to get Dabi's

Dabi's attentions when it's canon that it's the complete opposite. This latest story that came up in my feed was about Hawks "harassing" Dabi (who apparently has a backstory of r*pe) and Twice helps Dabi works out his feelings. Among the hoards of tags condemning Hawks, they decided to use "Hawks is very uncool in this fic heads up" so that's another one to add to my filters. I think I also have to block the "Dabi Needs a Hug" tags too bc he's always woobified like heck. 

I really want to read stories where Hawks interacts with Twice since they have a bond/drama with each other, but people have been adding Dabi and either making it seem like Hawks has been gaslighting Dabi in their "relationship" or with Twice. I can acknowledge stories where Hawks feels guilty for what he had to do or Twice being anger/betrayed over Hawks' actions since that is actually what happened; but I will not stand for Dabi claiming Hawks took advantage of Twice or Twice and Dabi having feelings for each other with Hawks in the way bc Dabi is a) the one who let Hawks in b) knew Twice is gullible and c) used Twice as bait. Even in the stories that are cute/causal+funny, Hawks is always the one who gets threatened with fire, harsh insults, or guilted into compliance but the seriousness of the first 2 are always brushed off and the third kinda makes me want it that Hawks doesn't have friends bc most people write him as a bad friend who only cares about his own problems (especially the ones that write Hawks like a celebrity/night club person). 

On writing Dabi, his issues always take priority over everything else, his family loves him, and the lov is always chill with him. He's usually written as the fun asshole/caretaker (bc of his big brother status or ablity to cook). Those factors aren't bad by itself, but it's extremely irritating when the writers/artists can give that level of care to Dabi, but just reduce Hawks to a meme who is a workaholic for the government/scared of punishment & not bc he really cares about the people he saves/helps. It's not like I hate the DabiHawks pairing, but the majority of the content (esp the recent ones), are frustrating to read & Hawks' character is usually written in bad out of character extremes. I am really mystified that I'm praying for canon content rather than fanmade most of the time.

Phew! After the back and forth it looks like we got to the end of that! (Or did we?! *Dun dun DUUUUN*) If not, though, feel free to keep the asks rolling. Lol Foxy and I are usually pretty happy to receive as many asks as people want to send even if it takes us a while, individually, to get to it. Now to finally address what you sent.

I find myself in a weird place when it comes to OOC fanfic because on the one hand people can write whatever they want, and I don’t really have a place to criticize them; but also when they blatantly and willingly misinterpret a character so they have grounds to bash on them it also leaves me acutely uncomfortable. I don’t think I’d call it “problematic” as much as a squick? Like, if they’re willing to blow past all the obvious proof to the contrary about their claims of a fictional character just because they hate them, then are they willing to do the same thing to a real person? Usually, those kinds of thoughts are pointlessly extreme, but we know those who unironically and/or unapologeticly call fans of the heroes “bootlickers” so... It’s like, ooc vent fics are also fine; and if you want to rewrite a character to fit the narrative scheme you’ve set up that’s cool as long as its tagged (“ooc [character]” or something) and/or just mention in the a/n that they knowingly and willingly mischaracterized them for the sake of the fic. Just. Don’t. Claim. It’s. Canon.

And speaking of canon, as much as I’m sure Horikoshi knew Hawks and Dabi were going to end up shipped I think it’s obvious that he never was going to canonically write them ending up together, yet here comes the “canon must validate my headcanon” crowd calling him a bad writer because the author had some bigger narrative goal in mind than having two pretty anime boys kissing.

And the worst part to me is, I feel there’s a distinct slice of the DabiHawks crowd missing out on some of the possibilities of this ship by intentionally mischaracterizing them. Like, the aesthetic equal/opposite draw of the ship is phenomenal as it is and I don’t even ship them, but I can see a wide range of possible fics based solely on the principle that they are canonically incompatible!

At the end of the day, Dabi is a dime-a-dozen edgelord - that pain in the butt OC that so many newbie D&D players make that they think is so deep and dark and mature, but is about as cookie-cutter as they come. It’s not that this kind of character is unsalvageable or a hopeless Gary Stu character, just that they don’t often come across as compelling in and of themselves or that they need more than just selfish hatred to carry them through a series. Two kinds of edgelords that can be done well are the “Out of the Ashes” edgelord and “I’ll Pull You Into Hell With Me” edgelord. The first kind recognizes there’s more to life than their sad backstory and getting even and thus choose to aspire to more noble causes - think Joel from The Last of Us. The second recognizes they’re actively doing wrong and come to embrace it - being more concerned with getting what they want than taking the moral high ground - think Frank Castle, aka the Punisher - and even these darker, “unsaveable” kinds of edgelord antiheroes can have redeeming qualities such as meeting and helping a young hopeful and telling them, “I know I’m on the road to hell, so if you want to save yourself you’d better not follow me.”

Dabi actually has what he needs to become the second type right now (assuming he’s Touya) and could even evolve into the first not unlike Kratos from God of War, but that potential can’t be fully recognized until you admit that he’s fundamentally self-centered and a bad person as-is. He may have the tragic backstory complete with justifiable hate at his genuinely abusive father, but rather than using that as fuel to see that never happen to anyone else like it did him - he just wants to get even. He burns people alive, knowing well he’s participating in the same destruction that his father committed to make him what he is now. He doesn’t recognize any of the merits of hero society and is only concerned with burning it to ash. He could use what happened to his family to incite compassion in his heart and take others under his wing, but instead he uses people as a mean to his own ends. He isn’t even proper grimdark - he’s just your run of the mill egotistical megalomaniac with a punk aesthetic.

And that’s still a good character in the grand scheme of things, maybe just not alone! Moreso, it’s a good villain and EVEN BETTER when you put him next to Hawks who is at his core:

Fundamentally Hopepunk!

Hopepunk is about being good and kind as an act of rebellion against a cruel and unfair world no matter how bleak it gets or how badly you’re beaten down. Despite his own cruel past, Hawks still has a heart to help others for no other reason than to help them, he constantly changes the odds to save as many people as he can when he’d be given a pass for letting the cards fall where they will, and not only is his aim to “help others” but to make sure that there’ll never be need for heroes again. He’s an active rebel against the system fighting with kindness and goodness, fervently looking and listening for the next opportunity to do good.

In agreement with you, Hawks and Twice are interesting to explore because while Twice is an optimist looking to make the world a better place, he’s still a step or two removed from Hawks’ worldview because Twice refuses to let go of the “family” he found for himself while Hawks is willing to sacrifice himself for others. That dynamic is so interesting, and it’s what made them so initially compatible and subsequently heartbreaking in canon.

And it’s such a disappointment to see this unwaveringly earnest character reduced to “shitty fratboy” so often. For a lot of people newer to his character I can understand the confusion, but there really isn’t an excuse if you’ve been reading the series, and the possibilities for fics with this canon personality are just so much more interesting to explore, especially with Dabi as his sort-of opposite.

For DabiHawks to work well, you have to recognize that something has to give in either of them. Some of the juiciest, most angsty content is when you have two characters grow close together over commonalities only to be reminded that despite everything else they share, that One Thing will always keep them from truly being able to see eye-to-eye. Either Dabi has to grow past his hatred and relearn compassion and empathy, or Hawks has to lose grip of that hopeful vision he has and fall into despair. Both options are good to explore, but both require the acknowledgement that Dabi’s view of the world is fundamentally bleak and selfish, especially compared to Hawks’. For a supposed revolutionary out to change the world for the better whose a diamond in the rough with a heart of gold, that’s not exactly on-brand; and at the end of the day the issue is that some are unwilling to admit that what they wanted Dabi to be is likely not going to happen and they love that fake version Dabi more than they love what Hawks actually stands for which is why Hawks always gets the shaft in the end.

I still personally hold a bit of a grudge against the DaiHawks ship as a whole purely because, as you said, Dabi always seems to take priority over Hawks instead of letting the two build a dynamic together. Hawks is always the one who has to give, and the torture porn some have made him go through to “make the ship work” is downright disturbing to me. Even at its height DabiHawks content completely flooded the Hawks character tags on Tumblr with some of the same problems that have persisted to this day such as emphasizing their aesthetic as opposed to their dynamic and rampant mischaracterization.

Dabi and Keigo always had a rivalry when it came to you. Although they compromised to share you, that didn’t mean they didn’t fight over you. Especially when it came to you favoring one over the other, so after Dabi found you in a compromising situation with Keigo, he demanded some alone time with you too.

Keigo leans against the bedroom door, being locked out. Of course this was part of the agreement when they each had your alone time with you, the other was forced to sit on the other side of the door.

“Don’t cover your face” Dabi commands, hearing you whine when Dabi curls his fingers against your inner walls. “If you do that again, I’ll have to tie your hands” He teases, chuckling lowly when you immediately pull your hands away from your face. You now clutch onto the satin sheets.

“Dabi- ‘M gonna cum” you whine, pushing your lips together so you don’t let put to many loud moans. Dabi slows his movements. “You’re gonna cum, hm?” He asks, watching you weakly nod and your chest heave. Just as your climax comes, he pulls his fingers out of you leaving you wanting.

“Fuck... you feel so good. Such a good girl for me” Dabi grunts, pulling you away from his shoulder to see your face. You look so beautiful with your mouth hung open as moans spill out from you.

“Who’s bigger, sweets, me or him?” Dabi smirks, snapping his hips into yours. Keigo feels a sneer work its way onto his face. You only whine and shake your head. “What? Can’t say?” He groans, watching you shake your head. You can’t say! No matter what you answer with, one will be upset and try to prove you wrong.

“C-Can’t say” you whine, tears leaking out of your eyes at how fast he thrusts into you. “Slow down! ‘M gonna cum!” You moan, throwing your head back in pleasure but also so you didn’t have to look at him in the eyes. “Fuck- You’re gonna cum already?” Dabi grumbles, leaning on your shoulder to leave marks. Hi, you are the person that introduced me to JinKei and your meta are always super interesting (if painful^_^') and recently I relisted to "two birds" by Regina Spektor and a few months ago I was like "oh, this could be such a good song for DabiHawks!" (and Keigo isn't the one that flies away) now I'm like "WOW, this is such a canon!Jinkei song!" and I suffer. Like if I was faster at drawing I would do an animatic. Sorry for rabling, I just wanted to share this idea with a Jinkei shiper ^^'

Oh my gosh~ I’m glad I converted some people to this ship!

Now, I really love two birds by Regina. I’m a huge Regina fan (my original blog title was a Spektor quote), even have a signed copy of her EP somewhere from over a decade back. Two birds really works for a lot of ships, and I definitely see it working for Jinkei, especially these lines:
