I am also, ahh, not the most interested in dadmare... I prefer when he is genuinely cruel and an awful person, because I like when characters are just the worst :-][I do feel like I sand off many of the hard edges though, even still... bad habit of mine, to try and make them more palatable hehe]

Also a reason Nightmare is so interesting to me is as a tool to show more of Fresh's characterization off. Most of what I see with Fresh is either ignoring how morally grey he is, or characters helping him get "better." Nightmare though, I feel like he could really show off and feed into Fresh's worst habits.

Nightmare would do very little to make Fresh stop being so existentially terrified of death, I think he'd even feed into it or try to make it worse; its useful to him, it keeps Fresh close. Nightmare is powerful, and if Fresh is so scared all the time, it means it would want to have a strong ally to protect it.

Also the lack of regard for others/using others in self interest. Extremely self explanatory, I think they are just enjoying meals together X]

I also think Nightmare treats Fresh different to the rest of his gang; the gang is useful in what they can do For Nightmare, and only producers of negativity second. Fresh, however, would probably not be a very public ally to Nightmare, and wouldn't provide that sort of thing. His use is in his own suffering, and the suffering of the host he's inhibiting. Which means Nightmare cares less for using him in more practical ways, and more for just Keeping him.

This leads to Fresh getting more special treatment, almost akin to pampering HAHA. Nightmare needs to show that Fresh would have a better time With him than Away from him. He has to balance what he wants of the relationship with the fact that Fresh is liable to bolt if He's not providing enough to Fresh. [And I think escaping, fleeing, is one of Fresh's strong-suits.]

Also sorry gahaha, you had such lovely things to say about my nightmare interpretation, but I just went off about freshi and how he's affected by the relationship.

head canons that make you insane about the bad or star sans?

okok this can be taken two ways

Insane as in AHHH I LOVE THIS

or insane as I'M GONNA HURT YOU

So I'll do both, starting with the first one.

Stars:

I find it amazing when Dream is given less innocence, but also isn't an asshole. I know this isn't really a 'headcanon', but the amount of times Dream is either some innocent toddler or an asshole is ridiculous. Like give him morals and stuff that he might lash out at but come on.

Dream having possession of something that reminds him of Passive Nightmare, a journal or some pictures. Maybe something like Basil's photo album from Omori.

When they aren't all assholes... AHHH I LOVE IT. I know this is the bare minimum but the stars have been butchered by the fandom so badly ☹️

Ink knowing about some AU details, but not all. It's more interesting, he may forget some of it anyway, as he's very forgetful.

Swap not being yandere.

Them being friends, I don't like them having drama, or at least if they do they can ignore it to protect the multiverse.

Most of my headcanons focus on the bad sanses since that's how I maintained my interest in the fandom. I've always preferred villains in stories. There's probably more I'm just not remembering. I know theres more it's just not coming to mind

Bad Sanses:

Dadmare is a headcanon I have always LOVED. it's not my main au, so depending on how I want a story to go, I may adjust characters, but Dadmare is a guilty pleasure.

Headcanons that delve deep into the mental of them. How Horror is mentally, Dust is, Killer is, Cross, error etc.

Speaking of that, Cross being a part of the bad sanses is a must, or he must be at least aligned with them (I'll discuss what this means in another post) and Error must occasionally work alongside them, and would have a room at the castle.

BRO I could yap for ages oml.

A general idea that Horror, Killer and Dust cancel out each other flaws. Horror is amazing physically, Dust is amazing magically, Killer is a mix. They all balance out another. Like I'm not saying Horror is gonna wipe the floor with with Murder, but he would certainly stand a chance, and given a chance, would easily win. Killers a Jack of all trades, hes fantastic magically and physically, but doesn't specialise. However since he has both he can use his skills to confuse apponents.

Silly Killer is funny.

okay this is actually kind of hard to write about. I can do bad headcanons easier. So in no particular order:

Making Fell abusive towards Lust

Making the Fallen Starts exist... I've seen them properly executed less than 5 times.

Making Horror act EXTREMELY feral (I do like it, but there's a line... and people treat it like a fucking jump rope.)

Making Nightmare extremely horrible. I don't mean he has to be a dad, but I personally have a limit, I like the angst, it's just not what I'd personally have in my AU.

The Bad Sanses becoming 'good', maybe they're not as bad as people thought, but making them good I don't like.

I think my least favourite headcanon of all time would probably be like Classic being on the star sanses.

I LOVE MY BOY CLASSIC OKAY. AND I WANT HIM NEUTRAL. And when he joins the stars for some reason he veomes super emo and depressed and shit and suddenly has an alter ego like this is some Jeckyl and Hyde. I don't like him being on the star sanses AT ALL.

Okay I'm writing these so Im forgetting them... I'll update if I remember anymore.

HC’s abt what happened to Color Sans after Othertale was discontinued below!!!!

In OtherTale canon, Color sans absorbed the human souls to help him stop a genocidal Frisk.

Color still got killed trapped in the void after a glitched reset.

He was trying to help his Undyne, who had taken his place in the narrative, fix everything.

Then one day, everything stopped. It all froze and crumpled into nothing. Color only survived because he was in the void.

(Ink would later explain to him that what happened to his world was something that he’d only seen once or twice before, where an AU’s creator cuts it off— discontinuing it. Theres nothing you can do about it.)

Color was stuck in the void with only a goopey gaster to talk to and the human souls. But then he figures out that he can make portals!

He desired company that would understand what he’s dealing with. And so the first place he ends up in is Killer’s world.

Fun!

Because he didn’t know how to go any other places, he hung out in Undertale Something New every now and then. Just so he wouldn’t go CRAZY.

Back then, Killer’s stage-2 killer was actually insane, but while in stage-1 he and Color got along!

Killer’s Chara had been killed by him and his world’s ‘story’ had completed— he couldn’t reset it.

Color and Killer became really close after like a year of it just being them.

Then Nightmare rolled up to Killer’s world, his negative aura (accidentally) and immediately putting Killer on stage 2.

Nightmare offered Killer a job, and killer accepted! It would take YEEEAARRRSSS for him to stabilize in stage-2 enough to realize that he left Color behind.

Color was so so so worried when killer just disappeared.

Killer disappeared, just like everyone else Color loved did. He felt like he failed to save his loved ones all over again.

Eventually he was found by Core, he moved to the Omega timeline, he found out that Killer was working for Nightmare.

Color assumed Killer was forced.

Meanwhile Killer, Dust, Horror and Cross were having a jolly old hurt/comfort time! I subscribe to Dadmare headcanons, sorry canon nightmare 🤧

Anw Color, with the enthusiastic support of the human souls, swore to help Killer get free.

I don’t really like how the trope is portrayed within the fandom as it immediately goes to generic tired dad Nightmare trying to control his rowdy kids, plus the infantilization of +30 y/o men who are cardboard cutouts of their selves who unironically call Nightmare “dad” just isn’t for me

I’m all for found family and the Nightmare gang being a close knit who genuinely care for each other, I’d just love to see it portrayed in a better more meaningful light

Okay so I have religious trauma and common coping mechanism is using your hyperfixation/s to explore trauma and stuff right?

Well Killer was made by an Arab creator and since we love creating casual versions where everyone has the heritage of their creator (i.e. Cross being hispanic, Dust and Farmer being Korean, etc...)

I... Also... Gave Killer religious trauma, or just a sorta cultural tradition kinda trauma because I just can't see religion existing in their world, it can, but I don't want it to be among our sillies at least (So at least background characters can still be diverse in that way)

I'm talking about this because I found the beginning of an old comic I was doodling on some paper a long time back, so lemme relay it over text for you guys

(Also note, I don't personally think of Horror as the cook of the group but I did it because I wanted the cute domestic feel that some people have their sillies in and it was a comfort comic at the time for myself so I didn't care about being accurate to my interpretation of them because I was already giving Killer religious trauma anyway, this is essentially just a comfort concept:)

H: "Hey Killer, wanna come try this real quick-"

[Killer speeds past and pretends to not have heard him, while walking by the viewer can see he visibly got a little tense/nervous]

[Horror is concerned and looks out the entrance]

H: "'M worried about 'im, Dust. He's been avoiding the kitchen since mornin'."

[Dust looks up and shrugs it off, not that he doesn't value Horror's concerns, but doesn't value Killer's bad behavior]

H: "Do you think it's my cooking?" [He said at the end of his short rant]

[Dust gets a little annoyed that Killer's behavior is making Horror overthink this]

D: Look, your cooking's fine, Killer's just being an ass, he'll be fine.

[Dust probably comes off harsh or dismissive because he probably wouldn't be good at comforting, Horror gets the sentiment though and that's all that matters]

I never finished the comic but the idea was that Killer was fasting secretly and eventually his behavior was noticed, I didn't really have an idea for the ending but I imagine he gets confronted about it eventually (I assume with dadmare present) and maybe the beans get spilled and they support his progress 🥺

Literally only made this as a comfort doodle because I was just done fasting I think and it's nice to have this y'know, but really I'd never subject any of my sillies to religious trauma (Unless it's plot relevant or makes sense because I remember seeing a multiverse where DreamTale's village left some religious trauma on Dream that subtly affected his mental health, so it was hard when she got older and discovered herself (Yes, Dream got she/her-ed and everything), and like y'know, stuff)

The Abyss Team; Beats (especially, I made an archive blog for their AU Underbeats), and the others I only know a little about because I’ve been procrastinating reading their stuff but from what I do know so far I like them. (Mecha, Abyss, Kin, V, Ganz.)

Cross. I don’t think I’ve seen all the canon Xtale stuff yet, but I’ve watched Underverse, the Xtale animation movie thing, and read a few of the comics. He’s silly and i really love the humans (frisk and Chara) especially. Already apart of the chromatic crew but might as well mention him.

Ink. Goober. I love their lore and their personality.

The Apple Twins..I’m chill with Dream and Passive Nightmare, but im not really sure how I feel about the corrupted Nightmare.

I don’t really care for Dadmare or Fanonmare, I find them overdone and boring, and yall already know how I feel about most fandom portrayals of killer and nightmare’s relationship and the killermare ship.

Zero complexity or nuance at all, or those people who think one sided killermare or “mutually toxic” killermare is somehow complex in any way.

I guess you can say I like signanothername’s version of Nightmare (and his relationship with killer and Dream and ccino and even color) a bit more than the canon.

I guess it’d be easier to say which Sanses im familiar with but am not yet strongly attached to or invested in and which Sanses I hate rather than ones I like. Only Sans I’ve come close to hating is Nightmare for various reasons.

Most others Sanses im ���okay” on. People like Fresh (read his doc should do it again), Ccino (also read his doc), Geno (haven’t finished reading Aftertale yet), Reaper (finished Reapertale just need to give a re-read and refresh my memory sometimes), Error (haven’t fully read his canon), Paper Crane (haven’t finished), Horror and Dust (read the Horrortale comics and went through a bit of the doc for Dust/the official acc. Need to do it again.)

I really can't stand Dadmare, Bad Sans Poly, Nightkiller, Blue joins the bad guys, and any Nightmare&MTT+Cross combination as romance or family no matter how AU the AU is. If a Gang fic has a good Nightmare I'm fine. If it has a flawed boss Nightmare who cares about his underlings but doesn't treat them like his children I'm fine. If the MTT and Cross see each other as family I'm fine. Nightmare as their dad or in a romantic relationship with anyone in the gang is a huge no for me. I think the reasons why I really hate Dadmare and Gang romance is that My first exposure to Nightmare and Killer was through the something new comic where Nightmare stabs Killer through the chest and manipulates Killer's soul as he begs Color to help him. My second exposure to them was the something new comic where Killer escapes Nightmare with Color. So many comments FELT BAD FOR NIGHTMARE and tried to DEFEND HIS ABUSE OF KILLER instead of showing any joy that Killer got away from his abuser. Some also said Killer shouldn't have left Nightmare like Killer owed it to Nightmare to stay. WHAT. That turned me away from Dadmare, Nightkiller, and any romance or family dynamic with Nightmare and anyone in the Gang. They make me very uncomfortable so they are blocked where I can block them. I'd love to have an way to block keywords on sites like youtube and ao3 like I can on tumblr. People don't always tag things and I don't want more Dadmare or Nightkiller in my recommended because I watch other Gang comic dubs. 😭

WARNING! DREAMTALE RAMBLE INCOMING!!

I personally am both a Canon Nightmare and Dadmare enjoyer. Both have different concepts and outlooks that are just so interesting for me. And I think it’s important to note to people who get upset at how others see him is the fact that Joku was an inconsistent writer for both Dream’s and Nightmare’s characters. (But I can go deeper into that in a different post)

Whether post-apple-incident Nightmare is the same person as before, corrupted, possessed by that one dead human, an eldritch creature born from negativity, or some split personality type shit. It doesn’t matter to me! I collect them all like Pokémon!!

What I really wish is for people to learn some canon facts that I find super interesting! Because I personally love doing deep dives into Dreamtale and am done holding myself back from info dumping like a maniac!! For example, this is an actual line from the comic that I think about way too much:

“But where did the tiny guardian go?

Inside of the mind of that thing there was an encounter. Nightmare was crying while the viscous person was hugging him, it was himself, telling him that he would protect him from everything.” (Source 1)

Like, Dadmare real??? He freaking HUGS him it’s so sweet!! In the context of canon it could also show how great a manipulator Corrupted can be right from the very start, having Night let down his guard and give in in order to take full control in the moment! Both are very interesting ideas to explore!!

Another example (yes another I know) is this other interesting fact I’ve found.

“Memories of the bullying often harm him: whenever he sees a lone person being beaten up by others, he will be reminded of what the original went through, this making him mindlessly kill the assailants.” (Source 2)

The fact that this is canon proves that a part of him is affected and triggered by his past. This is even shown to affect him so much that he not only breaks his no killing rule, but he also saves someone else (albeit quite violently). Take this information how you will.

I’ll end my rant here, and if you made it to the end I applaud you. This is sorta a continuation of my previous post here. There is still plenty I would love to talk about (the canon endings, Lore, etc) and I can make this into a little series if anyone would want! I'm gonna be anonymous when I say this because I have seen this done by many people... I strongly dislike the "Error and Nightmare gang are the good guys and trying to make the universe stable while The star sanses are the idiots who will not see reason" .. Like... I .. really? I'm not sure if the reason why I don't like it is because I have seen it so many times or what but it annoys me dearly. The members of the star sanses are reasonable and they are just often made as one sided ignorant people- I mean okay Lets go on the different pov, on the bad sanse side: You see them risk their lives every day getting themselves hurt over and over again all to defend different worlds for the sake of bringing what they believe to be peace and you label them as the fools who just want all the glory- really??? people who get hurt over and over again just do it for that stupid reasons??? I mean come on! Seeing as generally it is shown that the bad sanses want peace as well why not be trying to reach an agreement??? you fight over and over again and you couldn't even be bothered to try and reach their heads to finally listen to what you are saying like what "in a way" dream has done with nightmare countless times but they cant do the same? Just have them fight knowing that the other side are in the wrong and you choose to do nothing but break them?? Like is this your pride or something?? Why are they labelled as good guys yet they allow the other side to fight to their deaths with a good motive in mind but they only lack the full picture?? How am i suppose to "root for you" if this is what you do????? We get inside information of how peaceful they are and how they care for each other deeply, but if you care so much for each other why would you allow the other side to keep fighting your loved ones when they are missing the big picture, you know the big picture yet you say... my two cents on this (that isn't something i said. a million times before already) is that it's usually because people refuse to see the star sanses in the same light they do the bad sanses the people who actively dislike the star sanses and what they do usually do so because they can't relate to them, from what i've noticed

the bad sanses are easier to root for because of the fact that they are made of struggle and the dirty, gritty parts of morality and life so to say it's easier to think of good things in the middle of so much bad, because it's in our nature as people to look for hope or root for the good, no matter how little it is having the ability to look for goodness and love in so much evil is a form of love in of itself everybody struggles and life sucks and sometimes the world is evil and sometimes we do bad things, but that's the thing, the fact that we as people find something good in the middle of it all (like finding familial love bloom in the bad sanses, as an example) is very inspiring. at least to me!!! that's how i see it!!!! that's how i like to think people see it as well because that's how i see and enjoy them together so i can totally see why people find more relatability and love for the bad sanses. i really do get it and i agree!! like a lot!!!!! i love them too

but that exact reason is also why it really sucks that people just don't see the star sanses in the same light?

i wanna reemphasize my point in relatability: it's difficult for most people to relate to the star sanses because inherently they are the heroes, the protagonists, the main characters, because nobody are any of those things i feel like people often put them on a pedestal because of their central tropes and characteristics. they have it all already, they don't need more praise, right?

i think the biggest problem people have with the star sanses, like your whole ramble very clearly shows, is that they don't humanize them i feel like a lot of people assume that just because they are good and choose to be good and are praised for being good, they are unreachable people don't think they struggle. that it sucks being that.

it's often why i like writing the star sanses with so much struggle and so much mental illness lol, because being good is fucking HARD and they're as imperfect as everybody else. dream is anxious, ink is brash, blue is a workaholic, stuff like that

there's a lot to say but it's just....the bad sanses and the star sanses are two sides of the same coin. the bad sanses is finding good in the middle of, basically, evil and misdeed the star sanses is finding struggle in the middle of trying to do good

people often portray both of them black and white morals and it's why it gets frustrating and flat and badly written.

idk, just like how i find inspiration in the bad sanses of finding hope and love in the middle of darkness, i really admire the implications of the star sanses when you actually decide to humanize them. because if you make the star sanses struggle throughout their praise, glory, and righteousness, it's...really admirable that they still choose to do good.

Hi I have been watching your dadmare au really interestingly!! I found your artwork at googling and it was just awesome...

I was curious what if....dream gets sick, like high fever or cold? Kids get sick easily than adults, and they should take not strong medicine as their body is still growing...I am curious dadmare's reaction!

If Dream were to get sick, Dadmare would be really worried and fussy. He would spend all his time taking care of him and being by his side. Soup, blankets, wiping his nose, wet cloths on his forehead and wiping him down. Since they live in an area where medicine isn't easily accessible and healers are rare, he would have to take care of him on his own. For children around this time (since medical knowledge is safeguarded to certain professions or it's rare) it's possible for a sick child to die.

However, since Dream is a well-beloved child by the Village, they will probably send someone to check up on him. The only issue that Dream and Nightmare do not have monster souls, so healing doesn't really work on them. An apple would help, but he has a strong aversion to using or touching them. The Village may even threaten to take Dream since he got sick, and he needs care.
