i sometimes get the impression that a lot of people forget that while our flag means death is a comedy, it does know how to handle trauma well within the narrative. we are shown it over and over with the flashbacks for ed and stede and jim. at no point do they play the real trauma of the situation for laughs, its treated with the weight it deserves, while still being part of a comedy show

leaving the ofmd fandom

i’ll be completely honest. i just. cannot deal anymore. the constant negativity in this fandom has grown truly rancid because some people (you know who your are) just refuse to leave it. i’m not going to let this bullshit ruin my enjoyment of the best show i’ve seen in years.

i’ll be blocking the ofmd tag completely for…ehh idk a couple of months? and just generally cutting off most engagement with the community as a whole. i’ll still post art about it whenever i make some, but otherwise expect mainly tf2 and tma posts from now on.

I know people are upset about Izzy being killed (I am too) but the truth is I don’t think it was bad writing or even them diminishing Izzy’s character, I actually think everything about the last episode has to do with production and I think Izzy lovers will feel a little better about it if they see it like that (it helped for me).

Basically, if you look at it like this, I think 2 important things came into play. Budget and how the showrunners assumed this would play out. Which is to say that they probably assume HBO will either renew them for season 3 and cut their budget again or they’re going to be cancelled.

Both are very likely, so assuming they had this in mind, removing Con, who I’d guess is the 3rd highest paycheck after Taika and Rhys was probably their best budgeting move, especially if they’re thinking of having an all out war in the final season that they probably want to be a visual spectacle, so each season feels like it’s getting consistently larger in scope.

On the other hand, if they do get cancelled (which they probably will because the HBO CEO is a weird little conservative goon), they left the ending in a way that could be considered an ENDING while still being prepped for a 3rd season. So in the time they had left (which was 2 episodes less than their first season) they gave Izzy an entire completed character arc.

I 100% understand the sadness and anger, especially after all the shit he went through during the beginning of the season, I felt gut punched when I learned he died and was bitter as hell through my whole first viewing of the season even though I’d had more than a month to process it. But after having thought it through, I genuinely don’t think it’s simply them treating Izzy as just an extension of Ed’s character growth and I sure as shit don’t think it’s because they wanted to conform to Izzy haters.

I think if they had all of the resources and episodes they wanted, had a guaranteed season 3, I think we would have gotten the character growth we got with better pacing and he probably would have at minimum made it to season 3 (I also think he would have had a love interest, but that’s just what I wanted for him tbh).

I think they did the best they could with what they had, allocated a lot of budget and screen time towards his character despite having less of those 2 things than the first season, and at least let Izzy have a completed story and arc, even if the ending was deeply disappointing.

Summary:

The gun felt cool in his hand, heavy, full of promises. It could free him. One pull, one second and he would finally be gone, the suffering would be gone.

He went back to the armchair and reclined in it. He could feel the tears coming back at the corner of his eyes.

"A rotten leg's got to come off, eh?"

He fired.

Izzy takes a different path after he fails to kill himself. Slowly but surely, he will learn to trust, love, and make friends while rebuilding his life.

I get so frustrated by the fact that transmasc fic focuses so heavily on the same transition milestones (or on sex that doesn't feel meaningfully different from cis genderswap fic) and I just like. Do not know how to talk about it without sounding like a grumpy old man.

There are just SO MANY weird and specific parts of everyone's trans experience. I get so tired of the endless arguments about "happens to be trans" vs "about being trans" representation. It's not binary like that!! Pausing the narrative to mention that a character wears a binder, adding blorbo names to a textbook coming out, and fucking sloppy style are not the only options!!

I'm not mad that those fics exist, I want every scared trans teen who hasn't come out yet to have that safe haven on ao3, but also. Like.

Where are my trans fics about awkward packer slip-ups? About re-meeting someone who only knew you pre-transition? About travel difficulties and paperwork hell? About healthcare fuckups and deciding to come out to soften the "no" when you get invited to a pool party and picking your hobbies to avoid gendered spaces and the first time your voice cracks at the knitting circle? About gifts of clothes and learning to shave?

I want stories where the characters have specific trans struggles and joys that are unique to the circumstances of the rest of their lives. I want stories that are in medias trans, focusing on the middle bits and not just the big milestones of starting t/getting surgery/coming out. I want stories where trans people get help, even from people who aren't doing it perfectly, even from people they're not fucking or related to. Hell, I want more stories that actually engage with bottom dysphoria. I want comings-out that work the way real ones do, over multiple conversations to hash out the specifics of what "I'm trans" actually means for how you, specifically, want to be treated.

I want trans headcanons that feel the same way it does to BE trans: trans, and many other things that have nothing to do with being trans, simultaneously and inextricably. Trans stories that couldn't be told about any other character because they're grounded in the minutia of that specific character's life.

#This isn't actually really about ofmd for the record #I do feel extremely disconnected from a lot of trans izzy fic but there's no shortage of really unique #Trans fic in that fandom for like half the cast #Including iz!#Just realizing I've been spoiled I guess #I know that if I want better marvel fic I need to write it myself but u g h #I do not think I successfully avoided yelling at clouds here but I HOPE you can see my point among the salt #You'll notice that I never say I want LESS of anything I'm complaining about and that's on purpose #More weirder trans fic #More niche trans fic #This is my platform #I AM taking recs at this time #Maybe later I'll comb through my ao3 bookmarks to put together my own reclist if folks are interested #Or maybe I could finish literally any of my half-written trans stede fics

my most bitter proposal for a season 2 fix it is that the crew refuses to let ed back on the boat (as they should) so stede throws a tantrum and ultimatums that if ed stays so will he but the crew just take him up on that.

they make their inn in the wreckage of anne + marys house and the crew goes off and continues to have fun hijinks with izzy as the ship parent
