UPDATE: Girlypop Carebear Barbie obtained💗🥹‼️
I have LOTS of thoughts and opinions on modern (2015-) Barbie. I tend not to buy from the brand nowadays for a number of reasons. (Short summery, the quality/designs are just not there and it seems like a big waste of money.) However, when I looked at this doll, things just clicked and I knew I wanted her in my doll family.
I am so grateful that my mom supports me and my love of dolls and sent this diva to my school 🙏.
(2nd pic is her face next to a thrifted standard Millie, she’s my token mannequin doll lol. Also she doesn’t come with a Fanny pack. I already had that.)
RARE 2020s BARBIE W‼️
#magpieposting#I could not in good conscience recommend this doll (she's not worth the $25 retail price) but I still really like her.#I named her Kara (cause it sounds like Care A Lot).#Hopefully I can get Kara more pink Barbie sized clothing in the future#maybe second hand Fashion Fever or LITDH era fashion

For the Supersons week 2023 bonus prompt: In another life
@super-sons-week
(Click for better quality)
This is an au of mines called Species swap where Damian's an alien and Jon's a human instead. Besides my apocalypse one, this one is also one of my most faves! And for fun, I also named it Earth 59
(More under the cut)
Damian and the Batfamily, plus the Al Ghul's, are hero aliens instead of humans (though, the Al Ghul's are more like warriors here like Tamaraneans are for example) and Jon and the Superfamily are the humans in this au who save people on earth with their highly trained combat skills and helpful gadgets.
The Al Ghuls live on a far away planet called "Lazarus planet" and Damian grew up there with them (just like in his origin). All aliens there were trained to fight very skillfully. Damian too while growing up there was trained to fight very skillfully as well, since he's going to be the ruler of that planet one day when he grows up.
But then Talia had no choice but to send Damian to his Father's planet on his 10th birthday, since some vicious aliens from another planet had came to invade their home and wanted to assassinate all of their people during that day, so she had to do it to keep him safe until the war was over. She quickly leaves their planet and uses one of the mini traveling spaceships to drive Damian to Bruce's planet, which is Gotham. After landing there and finding Bruce, she leaves Damian there with him to be taken care of while she's gone.
So for the mean time while Damian has to stay on Bruce's planet, he begins to finally get to know his Father and finally learns about the rest of his unknown Batfamily members for the first time as well. And while all of that's happening, after some time, the Al Ghul's later win the war on their planet and Talia goes back to go get Damian. Though, Damian has already become attached and didn't want to just leave his Father and his other family so soon after getting to finally know them for only just such a short time, so Talia lets him stay a little longer because of that. After that, her and Bruce both later decide on an agreement about sharing equal time with him, letting him usually spend one week on Lazarus planet with the Al Ghul's and the next one on Gotham planet with the Batfamily so that it'll be fair
With the Superfamily, Jon, Clark, Lois, Kara, Kon, and Chris live on earth as humans and fight crime protecting people (just like the Batfamily as humans). They train a lot to stay strong and also own a lot of gadgets. And just like how the Batfamily would, they have things like a Superrang, Supermobile, and etc. They also all wear masks to hide their identities
Damian's never been to earth before, not even his Mother. Though, he's always heard stories from his Father, brothers, and Grandfather about earth and it's humans, since they're the ones who have actually been there before. He was always curious about what it was like over there but he never dared to visit it, especially since he was always told by his family that he wasn't ever allowed to because of certain reasons that could possibly endanger him
One day though, during a mission in space with his brothers when he was 12 years old, which involved a bunch of dangerous aliens who owned powerful electric, laser guns, he fell down to earth after being severely shocked and knocked out by a strong laser blast. He fell down in planet earth's direction, later crashing into a video game store while Jon and his family were nearby, busy dealing with a mission of their own. Jon, after hearing the crash, went to go take a look at where and what the loud sound was caused by and saw Damian just laying there knocked out in the store with the ceiling rocks on top of him, since he had destroyed the stores roof during his crash into the place
After the rest of the Superfamily found out about it, they took Damian with them to the Fortress of solitude to find out who he was (he was still knocked out), since they knew he wasn't from earth after looking at his unique outfit and long unusual sharp, large sword. As soon as Damian woke up, he tried to fight them and escape, feeling endangered since he didn't know them, but they calmed him down and then kept him inside of a clear cube that he couldn't break through at all with his super strength so that he could stop, which just got him upset again but even more than before
They let Damian out once they found out that he wasn't a threat and tried apologizing to him. Jon excitedly then tries to become his friend and tries showing him around Metropolis during that same day until they can get him back home. Damian's clueless about earth things and only knows a little bit about the things that his family has told him about it before, so Damian ends up curiously asking Jon a lot of questions about everything around earth and in Metropolis, while Jon tries to answer them all for him (he thinks that Jon is a very smart person cause he knows all the answers to his every question lol). So they both get to bond a little and know eachother better that same day (they also fight some crime together while walking around the city)
Meanwhile, the Batfamily and the Al Ghul family are both panicking very much and are trying to find Damian as fast as they can since he's still missing. So once the Batfamily and the Al Ghul's got to earth, they got into a mini fight with the Superfamily, thinking that Damian's in danger with them. But then Bruce remembers Clark being the same exact boy he had met as a kid when he himself accidentally crashed onto earth many years ago in the past and got his help to go back home, so it all gets figured out in the end and peace is quickly made between them both and all is finally understood
Both of Damian's family finally found him after that and tried to take him safely back home, but he refused and didn't want to leave since he found everything so interesting on earth, plus he was also just starting to like Jon too. After arguing back and forth, they decided that he could visit sometimes, but only with supervision from whoever is available to go along with him during those times to make sure he's okay. Damian was pleased with that decision.
So after everything and as time went on, Damian and Jon later became the duo team named Supersons and also best friends in the end too (with crushes on eachother)
Some facts:
Damian and the Al Ghul's are the ones who rule Lazarus planet since they're the royal family there
Those from Lazarus planet are called "Lazarens" and those from Gotham planet are "Gothamites", so that makes Damian a mixed alien who is considered a "Lazamite"
Most characters who are aliens in canon are now humans in this au instead
All planets like Tamaran and Krypton don't exist in space in this au and are instead just big cities on earth. Tamaran city is corrupted under Blackfire's control over it and Krypton is a city that was destroyed many years ago, so it is now abandoned and no one ever visits it
Damian is pretty reckless on earth while fighting and using his powers on humans who are criminals, since he's used to being that way when defeating enemies who are very strong like him back in space. So Jon has to sometimes remind him to be more careful about what he's doing and how he has to be more calmer when handling humans and certain other things
Just like how Damian always visits Jon on earth for patrol together or just hangout or have sleepovers at the Kent farm, Jon also visits Damian's planets sometimes too and they get to do many of those things together there as well
Damian wanted to find a way to be around Jon more though after becoming his friend, so after hearing that Jon goes to school in the early day, he immediately wanted to be registered in too (it's also because they don't have many schools in space for alien kids and he was homeschooled for years by Talia, so he wanted to know the experience too). Talia and Bruce didn't want to do it since they were afraid that he could get caught as an alien if he were to make any kind of mistakes around the civilians over there, but after being constantly asked over and over by their son and seeing how much he wanted it, they finally did it for him. The Superfamily decided to help him out by making him a holographic bracelet that makes him look human (which makes him look like how he always does in canon)
Damian doesn't have his canon pets with him in space in the beginning (only Goliath and Batcow who have some type of alien DNA in them) and has no idea what earth pets are like either because of this, but he does meet them on earth later on. After escaping their everyday cages, they all unexpectedly run out of a nearby pet shop while Jon is showing Damian around the city and they happily run towards the Boy Wonder. Damian prepares to defend himself since he isn't very trusting of them at first, thinking they are going to try and challenge him with an attack like other creatures he's fought before, but he was immediately met with the complete opposite after getting pushed down to the ground by them, getting a bunch of doggy and cat kisses to the face instead. This unexpected love from them quickly made him change his whole view on them, causing him to fall in love with their lovable, fluffy cuteness. The pet store owner tried to take them back inside, but Damian threatened him with his large sword so that he can leave them alone. It scared the poor guy away and Damian happily left with his new pets. After seeing that, Jon had to quickly go after Damian to tell him that's not how things are done on earth and that he has to actually go back and adopt them first for real instead of just leaving with them. After all of that, Damian later puts special collars on them (made by the Batfamily) that help them breathe properly in space so that he can take them home with him
When Jon gets married to Damian in the future when they're both adults, he also becomes a king on Lazarus planet too like Damian
In this au, Damian and the Batfamily destroyed Eberos (the creature from Dceased who was made by Darksied to start the apocalypse) before he could even do anything to earth
For abilities and other little things:
Damian has flight, Superstrength, Superspeed, laser vision, laser beams, and flame blasts that he can throw from his hands. And also, while it may be a learned skill for him in canon, it's actually a natural born ability of his to be able to imitate many voices in this au
Whenever he gets really mad, Damian's hair turns into flames until he calms down again
Lazarens have Lazarus blood in them, so whenever they get cuts or are severely injured, their wounds just close back up (after an hour) and they regenrate whatever part of their body they lost (which usually takes almost a month). They can also live up to 2000 years or even longer because of this. There are also multiple Lazarus pits on Lazarus planet
Damian's big sword is way too heavy to actually be held by humans, so only those with super strength like him can hold it. He can also transfer his abilities to the weapon while holding it during battle and make it light up in green fire, which helps him create bigger damage against enemies and make fast clean cuts through anything too
Not one of them, but Damian is allergic to these giant "shrimp" like creatures in space and will grow a big headache and will also be sneezing out whole fire breath sneezes as if he's a dragon if he's too close to them for too long. He can even take out almost a whole battle field with it too, that's how bad it is (inspired by my friend @paladin-of-nerd-fandom65 's headcanon where Damian is allergic to shrimp). After finding out about this allergy, Jon created an antidote for him that makes it go away faster whenever they bump into these creatures
Lazarens only fall in love once with someone and aren't able to go through it again with other people
Bruce is a Gothamite who is born with a lot of rare abilities that many other Gothamites don't have, so some of them were passed onto Damian too. They're: Super high intelligence, the super clear ability to observe things much better than a human as if they're like robots, astounding quick memory, and the ability to move any shadows with them when they need to stay hidden
Damian's system allows him to eat whatever he wants, especially weird stuff, without any kind of problems. He's still a vegetarian though and even tries to be one with earth food too (sometimes he doesn't understand what any of the meals actually are though and needs help from others to tell him if they involve meat or not)

Oh This Should Be Good | Sakusa Kiyoomi
Pairing: Sakusa X Reader (female)
Genre: fluff, comedy?
Author’s Note: @makeusfreefromthisfandom and I are doing a seasonal challenge where we give each other prompts! You can read her’s here to the prompt I gave her! and here, you can obviously read mine with the prompt she gave me:
“Ahaha this is random but imagine his daughter asking him where babies come from 😭“
Also note: I like to write Sakusa as if he’s getting help with his germaphobia like slowly over time, as challenging as it is, he’s trying to change and be better with people he loves and cares about like his partner and perhaps offspring. Even though this would be kind of out of his canon character, I like to write him like this so he’s a more flexible character to write for.
Warning: Timeskip spoilers ah ha ha, parents, kids, married characters
D/N = Daughter’s name
gif from @rivaillerose 💛
“Daddy!” Sakusa and your little girl ran towards her father, grabbing a hold of him around the waist as he stepped into the living room, finally getting a rare day off now that baby number two was on their way
“Morning, pumpkin,” he stifled a yawn as he patted her back, messing with her hair up before she let go of him in a fit of giggles, following him
“Will you play with me today?”
“What do you mean, I always play with you,” he slid down on the wooden floors, making himself comfortable as he leaned back against the couch, now at the same eye level with his precious jewel
All she could do was smile as bright as the sun, her laughter echoing throughout the living space as the sunlight poured in
She truly was such a little angel, it amazed Sakusa still to this day how far he and his growing family was coming
Naturally, his smile matched hers
He relaxed as he let the day go by, his daughter playing around him, playing with her toys, occasionally watching the cartoons
“What are you doing?” She leaned into his side as he wrapped an arm around her to make sure she didn’t fall or slip in any way as she peered at what he was doing
“I’m just-“ but before he could answer, his phone rang as he faced himself in his pwn phones reflection
He could see the visible relaxation and smile disappear as soon as he saw the contact names
“Don’t answer #1, Don’t answer #2, and don’t answer #3”
Despite their contact names, he still answered, internally praying that he wouldn’t regret this call
“Oi Hinata, you were right, I owe ya five bucks since he answered,” Atsumu’s accent sounded over the call
“Sakusa, hey hey hey!” Bokuto the bright star called through the phone
“Uncle Bo!” Your daughter jumped against her father as she held onto his wrist until Sakusa lowered the phone, letting her see her “uncles”
Though he never agreed to let them be her uncles
“Oh! Mini Sakusa!” All three of their eyes twinkled as they all beamed looking to your guys’ daughter as if she was their own
“What do you guys want?”
“So cold, Omi~” Atsumu whined. “You haven’t been at practice for so long, the scrimmages haven’t been the same.”
“But it’s also nice not to worry about blocking or trying to dig Sakusa’s nasty cut shots cause of his wrists…” Hinata smiled looking relieved
“Oh! How’s Y/N’s pregnancy? Did you guys find out the gender yet?” Bokuto chimed
“She’s doing alright and no, we wanted it to be a surprise..” Sakusa replied
“Daddy?”
“Hm?” Sakusa looked to her as she now made herself comfortable in his lap as he leaned forward, putting the phone down
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close
“Where’s mommy?”
“She’s-“
“Right here~” you waddled down the hall, your hair and clothes disheveled, unknowingly disrupting sakusa
“Mommy!” Your little girl sprung from Sakusa’s lap, making her way to you, latching her arms around your belly as best as you could
“Careful, D/N,” Sakusa worried seeing how she ran up to you, trowing your arms against her belly
“Why?” She held onto your hand as you walked toward the couch Sakusa leaned himself against before you lead her to sit down in his lap once again
“Oh, the Jackals. Hi guys,” you waved as you laid yourself down on your side on the couch, your head
“Y/N!” They all chimed, as if they all shared the same brain cell
this only confirmed Sakusa’s theory the more they said or did things simultaneously
“How’s pregnancy?” Atsumu chimed as he clearly lounged about in his own apartment
“Tiring,” you spoke just loud enough for the phones mic to catch what you said as you looped your arm around his shoulders, reaching for his hand to which he linked together
“But a lot more manageable since we know what to expect,” you yawned into your shirt, a habit you picked up from being with Sakusa
He used to cringe and shy away at your touch but now he didn’t even think twice about yours or D/N’s
“Hm, we’ll be uncles for more kids,” hinata beamed
“We didn’t even say-“
“The best uncles,” you nudged Sakusa’s shoulder playfully to which he just sighed, squeezing your hand in return
“Speaking of tired, why aren’t you sleeping in bed?” Sakusa turned his head, letting it rest on the edge of the couch as you brought your hand through his hair
“I didn’t want to sleep alone, plus it sounded so fun out here, how could I miss out on all the fun?” You reached down, booking your daughter’s nose as she stared at you
And then your belly
“Daddy?” She stood in between his legs as all the adults watched, curious at her next words
“Where do babies come from?” She stared with her wide eyes at Sakusa as you snickered, burying your head into his shoulders, eyes heavy
Atsumu choked on the water, doing a small spit tic as Hinata paused his game to laugh
Bokuto erupted into a big fit of laughter, enough to wake Akaashi beside him before he shushed him, cuddling him back to sleep but this is a different story
“Oh this should be good..” you laughed as all eyes fell upon Sakusa, the laughter dying down and being held in his teammates’ mouths as they awaited
“Uh...” Sakusa’s mind raced as he panicked
he knew this question would come up at some point
but not like this
at least not now
your eyebrow raised naturally as sakusa’s breathing picked up
“Next question...” he changed the subject, not ready to answer
“But what about babies? How did one get in mommy’s tummy?”
“Yeah, omi, how?” you joined in on the fun only to be on the receiving end of Sakusa’s famous glare that only softened for you after a second
Now sakusa really regretting answering the call
“It’s a secret, you’re not old enough to know yet,” Sakusa evaded
“Aw, but-”
“Next question, pumpkin,” He looked to her as if pretending it was just the two of them, parting her raven hair, ticking it behind her little ear
“Oh Omi, your ears are so adorably red and hot,” you teased, brushing your finger along the back of his bright red ears, purposefully pointing them out as the jackals laughed too
the day continued with good memories as were made
He never thought he would feel this way in his life but
If he told himself 4-6 years ago that he would be married, let alone go on a date with someone and actually tolerate them, he wouldn’t have believed himself
but now he was grateful that you had crossed his path
~~~~~ Thanks for reading! Masterlist for more! Please do not repost anywhere else!
red petals; kim sunwoo (1)
genre: angst, hanahaki disease, unrequited love, college au, introvert!reader
synopsis: with everyday you feel your love for him growing. so do the flowers in your lungs. and you can‘t do anything but discover a new flower each day.
warnings: angst, suicidal thoughts, disfunctional family
in which you are deeply in love with kim sunwoo, who happens to be interested in your friend.
daffodils are the first flowers you coughed up.
long, slender petals in a beautiful shade of yellow. inner ones formed into a trompet-shaped tube, the flower appears pretty to everyone. people don‘t seem to care about the symbolic meanings of each flower. instead, they are interested in the beauty of it. its color, shape, smell.
however, you dislike daffodils. the latin name for it is narcissus. the flower is named after a beautiful greek god, who was arrogant. he rejected all romantic advances and fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. however, he drowned trying to capture his reflection. therefore, the flowers on the riverbed are called after him: narcissus. apparently, the heads of daffodils can be compared to narcissus bending down to observe himself on the water.
needless to say, you make a lot of research of the flowers you cough up. finding out that daffodils can be symbolized as unrequited love, makes a lot of sense to you.
unrequited love is the reason for your hanahaki disease.
_
everything started in your second semester of college when your roommate kara decided to introduce her friend group to you, someone who appears quiet and shy.
although you’re an introverted person, you were able to open up to your new friend group. eric, mina, haknyeon and juyeon.
however not to kim sunwoo.
no matter how much you try to open up and talk to him, you fail every time.
blushing, shifting gaze, slightly trembling hands, dry mouth.
whenever the boy talks to you, you shrug, shake your head or nod an answer instead of actually speaking. sometimes you hesitantly offer an opinion or answer question to avoid awkwardness.
don’t get me wrong. it’s definitely not because you dislike kim sunwoo. quite the opposite! for some reason, you feel a little too attracted to the college student. just the sight of him makes your heart beat a little faster. now and then you have eye contact, which leads you to look away after only milliseconds, eyes looking for an object to focus on. wavy, dark hair slightly covering his beautiful round eyes makes you completely nervous. afraid that you’ll say or do something dumb or embarrassing, you usually keep silent. therefore, your bond with him isn’t as strong as the ones with the others.
on the other hand, you enjoy eric’s presence since the young boy is extremely energetic and really fun to be around with. eric made you open up by starting conversations with you when nobody else was giving their attention to you. as the others were laughing about something, the young boy noticed that you haven’t spoken a word and suddenly started talking to like you were his best friend.
little do you know, sunwoo wonders why you are comfortable around everyone besides him.
like how you are currently walking home after a long night of studying. the night sky is pitch-black, stars almost invisible. you feel the old air hit your face as you feel sunwoo’s warm hand slightly brush against yours. instantly your cold cheeks heat up due to the sudden contact of his skin with yours and you feel your hand tingle.
instead of looking up to observe his reaction, you don’t advert your gaze from the ground, too scared to look into his eyes. although you don’t even dare to take a quick glimpse, you know that he looks insanely good at that moment. his puffer jacket fading in the darkness, his other hand in his pocket, curls covering his forehead, tanned skin glowing under the moonlight. if only you had the guts to talk to him.
however, thankfully the boy himself moves his head to face you only to observe your small figure quietly walking next to him. sunwoo thinks you’re too engrossed into your own thoughts, not paying attention to your surroundings. not paying attention to the rest of the group walking in front of you, while the both of you walk in a slower path. indeed, the boy is anything but used to being alone with you. therefore, he takes this as an opportunity to talk to you.
“you good?”
his sudden deep voice brings you back to reality and you give him a short side glance before looking ahead of you again. sunwoo is surprised to actually hear your voice instead of getting a simple nod as a response.
“yeah. i’m just a little tired.”
in contrast to his, your voice sounds small and soft. attempting to meet your eyes, sunwoo nudges your side playfully with his elbow. “relax a little. you always study until you doze off.”
laughing at his statement, you finally meet his eyes and shrug before answering. “they only pick the best students for the bachelor specializations.”
when your eyes meet sunwoo’s he feels relief and comfort. the young boy is amazed by your shining eyes under the moonlight as he offers you a genuine smile, eyes still focused on yours.
“you already do well in everything, thought...”
you notice sunwoo trailing off and his eyes glancing around the park you’re passing by, before his gaze lands on you again.
“except botany.”
both of you say the same words at the same time causing you to laugh.
“i don’t know. it’s just not interesting to me?”
for some reason you seem a little less shy than usual today, which enables you to have a normal conversation with sunwoo.
“well, if you help me with microbio i could help you with botany.”
sunwoo shrugs, hands still in his jacket pockets. it is true that kim sunwoo has a deep interest for botany. everyone in your friend group knows that the young boy likes learning about several plants, whereas you find it boring and unnecessary.
however, before you can agree to his suggestion, kara turns around swiftly to face both of you. gesturing to the dorms, the girl pouts lightly. “it’s time to separate our ways.”
“see you in the library tomorrow.” sunwoo mumbles when kara pulls him into a tight hug.
rapidly you look away, eyes trying to focus on anything but your two friends next to you. eventually your gaze lands on eric, who’s already looking at you with an unreadable expression. soon enough he pats your shoulder as he chuckles. “sleep well. tomorrow’s going to be a long day.”
“you too.”
smiling, you wave at your friend before you turn your head to catch a glimpse of sunwoo glancing at you. thinking he won’t say anything anyway, your feet start moving towards kara, who’s saying goodbye to the others.
“y/n!”
sunwoo calling your name makes you stop immediately, heart pounding a little faster than normal. with curious eyes you turn around and are met with sunwoo waving at you, a small smile forming on his lips.
“rest well. and let’s talk more.”
suddenly your body feels like its frozen on spot, no single muscle able to move. it’s stupid how you can’t do anything but blink a few times, clearing your throat to give him a response. however, your throat feels dry and your nervousness makes it impossible for you to form actual words. instead, you nod shyly, waving at him one last time before your roommate grips your arm, pulling you towards the dorms.
kara is already sleeping peacefully while you face your reflection in the bathroom, hand clasping your throat as you feel burning pain in your whole chest and throat area. frowning you reach for a glass of water, hoping that the pain would vanish.
however, it only starts hurting more causing you to squat down on your spot. probing the pained area while wincing, you wonder what could be the cause for this horrible burning and itching.
when you eventually feel like you’re going to throw up, you quickly grab an empty bucket. completely shocked by what came out of your mouth, your glassy eyes are now widen as you lean back, hand covering your mouth. in order to keep quiet, you try to avoid loud coughing.
the empty bucket is now filled with countless yellow petals.
flowers?
head tilting to the side, you open your mouth but can’t speak. the whole situation seems entirely absurd and confusing to you. maybe it’s a dream?
but you know it isn’t a dream when you google “coughing flowers” only to find out that it is an actual disease called “hanahaki”.
and you suffer from it because of unrequited love.
_
to be continued.
for your happy prompts ask, perhaps kara is a documentary film maker who follows ceo lena around for a doc and ends up falling in love with her by learning a bunch of little things she finds out during filming? also p.s. i absolutely adore your writing even when it tugs at the heartstrings. thank you for writing what you do! it makes my day everytime i see an update or get an email
She wasn’t allowed to see Lena Luthor until she’d signed so many papers that, if stacked together, would be taller than she was. She wasn’t even allowed to touch her camera around Lena Luthor until the woman herself, CEO extraordinaire, had personally vetted Kara out.
“You know,” Kara said as casually as she could, finding herself nervously adjusting her glasses when Lena’s cold gaze fell on her, “I usually have a whole team with me when I do this.”
“And I agreed to this on the condition that only one nosy filmmaker follows me around, not a whole team.” Lena’s reply was like everything else Kara had learned about the CEO thus far: she was blunt, a little harsh, tone and eyes cold and emotionless. She gave nothing away, not in her walk, in her mannerisms, in the ridiculously healthy food she ate, in the way she spoke to her employees or board members. She was cool, detached, wickedly smart, and utterly composed. “And I must approve the final result,” she added, gesturing to the mountain of paperwork Kara signed.
(Kara sighed internally, a tiny part of her sure Lena was a robot.)
“But it’s everything, right?” Kara clarified. “A total look into your life, no holding back?”
“You may follow me around to your heart’s content,” Lena said, leaning back in her desk chair, studying Kara intently.
“May I ask, Ms. Luthor, what made you agree to this, when you’re usually so distrustful of the media?”
Lena gave Kara a smile that didn’t touch her eyes. “What made you ask to do this when you know I distrust the media?”
Lena hadn’t answered, so Kara knew she didn’t have to either, but she felt it was important to establish some kind of rapport with the woman she’d be following around for the next few weeks. “I’m of the opinion that things are rarely as simple as they seem from the outside, that’s all.”
“Well,” Lena said, looking pleasantly surprised and offering Kara a grin (a real one, one that touched her eyes and transformed her face), “perhaps that’s why I agreed to you doing this.”
x
“You’re one of Ms. Luthor’s closest friends, is that right?”
“Yes.”
“Since before your daughter was born?”
“Yup.”
“So would you say you know her quite well?”
“Sure.”
“Do you plan on answering any of my questions with more than one word?”
“Nope.”
“Okay. So, in one word I suppose, how would you describe Ms. Luthor to a stranger?”
“Flawless.”
x
The rules of her arrangement with Lena were rather simple. For the next several weeks, Lena consented to having Kara around from the moment she woke up to the moment she went to sleep. In return, Kara was not allowed in certain meetings at L-Corp, was not allowed to bring her camera with her at all when Lena went down to R&D, and if Lena asked for her to stop filming at any point, Kara was bound to immediately do so and erase any footage she may have inadvertently captured.
For the first two days of the arrangement, it was actually rather boring. Lena was awake before the crack of dawn, she didn’t acknowledge Kara’s presence as she made coffee and toast (though she did push a cup and a plate towards Kara), and then spent the next fifteen or so hours in her office, sifting through papers, answering phone calls and responding to emails, and forgetting meals. It wasn’t until the third day that Lena’s routine changed slightly.
She received a phone call at breakfast, and whoever it was caused a bright red blush to bloom on her cheeks. Kara zoomed in slightly on Lena’s face as she answered the call. “Now’s not really a good time, Sam,” she began, falling silent at whatever this Sam was saying on the other end. Lena’s eyes flitted over towards Kara, but to her surprise, she didn’t ask for Kara to shut off the camera. “That sounds terrible,” she said, sounding truly apologetic, something about her countenance changing. She seemed softer, more open, calmer than Kara had seen her yet. “And Ruby was so excited too.” Lena fell silent once more, nodding almost as if unaware of it. “I agree with her,” Lena suddenly laughed, still nodding, “it’s not fair at all. But there’s no way I’m not going to visit. Do you want me to bring anything?” Lena laughed again, and Kara wondered if her camera was capturing the change she was witnessing with her own eyes. “As if I could forget Ruby’s chocolate.” A pause. “Give her all my love.” Another pause, a tiny smile on Lena’s lips. “All right, I will. Bye.” As she hung up, she looked over at Kara, as if daring her to comment, everything about her shuttering at once.
“Who was that?” Kara asked, not really expecting an answer. To her surprise, however, Lena’s eyes flitted to the camera and she let out a soft, resigned sigh.
“That was my CFO, Sam Arias,” she answered, her tone a complete 180 from what she was using on the phone. She studied Kara for a moment and must have read something on her face, because her shoulders deflated and she motioned towards her phone. “Sam is my best friend. Her daughter, Ruby, is my goddaughter. We were supposed to go to the animal shelter today.” Lena smiled softly, almost as if unaware of it. “She’s finally convinced Sam she’s responsible enough for a pet. It’s actually—” Lena stopped suddenly, her eyes shifting to the camera once more, any warmth that had managed to leak out dissipating at once. “In any case, she’s sick. So we’ll have to reschedule.” She waved her hand towards the camera. “Can you turn that off, please?”
“Uh, yeah, of course,” Kara said quickly, making a show of turning the Camcorder off and setting it aside. “Is something wrong?”
Lena shook her head, leaning against her kitchen counter as she eyed Kara with something like curiosity. “You know, I’ve seen all of your other work,” she said after a moment, frowning at Kara like she was a puzzle she couldn’t figure out.
(Had she? Seen all of Kara’s work? A part of Kara was curious as to how, after all, most of her stuff was tucked away in a closet back in Midvale, waiting to be opened up and viewed during Christmas, when Alex would laugh at the films she’d made in high school about how the boys’ sports teams were unfairly given more attention than the girls’. The others were projects for her degree and one or two failed attempts to get a real production company to take the risk on her.
In fact, if not for Cat Grant’s decision as ‘The Queen of All Media’ to get involved in filmmaking, funding a project from a no-name creator, Kara wasn’t even sure she’d have the film she was making now.)
“Oh,” she said inarticulately, not quite sure how to word what she was really thinking. How rich did you have to be to be able to bribe anyone into giving you anything?
Lena nodded carefully, her face a perfect mask. If not for the way her eyes followed Kara’s every movement, Kara would’ve even thought that Lena was bored. “You’re very fond of certain themes. Hope. Love. Endless optimism in the best of humanity.” She said it like it was a bad thing. And it was suddenly Kara’s turn to lean forward on the opposite end of the counter, feeling her head tilt to the side questioningly.
“Is that what you got from my films?” she asked, genuinely curious.
Lena seemed wary of the question, standing up straight and crossing her arms over her chest defensively. “Isn’t that what you intended?”
“You know,” Kara said slowly, “I don’t actually believe in all that creator’s intent nonsense. I think we search for parts of ourselves when we consume art. So if that’s what you got from my films, that says more about you than it does about me.”
If anything, this seemed to offend Lena. “So you’d deny having any sort of intent with your work? What about making something with meaning?”
Kara laughed, shaking her head. “That’s not what I mean, and besides, who says art has to mean anything?”
“Of course art means something,” Lena argued, narrowing her eyes at Kara. “What’s the point of doing it if it doesn’t mean anything?”
Kara shrugged easily, giving Lena a small smile. “I disagree. I think art says something. But meaning is up to the people who consume it.” She picked up her camera and pointed it at Lena without turning it on. “Doesn’t matter what I intended to say with my films, you got meaning from it. So I’d say there was a point in making it, don’t you think?”
Lena eyed her for a moment, apparently not liking that Kara wasn’t giving her an answer, wasn’t telling her what she was trying to say with her work. But then, after several long seconds, she relented, letting out a chuckle and shaking her head. “Well, fine,” she said, her smile touching her eyes. “As long as you don’t try to say anything silly like hope, love, or endless optimism in the best of humanity with this film.”
“I’m afraid I can’t change who you are, Ms. Luthor,” Kara said softly, turning her camera on and effectively cutting off any response Lena may have had.
(And when she looks at the footage weeks later, she’ll freeze that frame, breath catching at the look on Lena’s face: the softness of her eyes, the curve of her lips, and the pleasantly confused crinkle between her brows.)
x
“Do you spend a lot of time with your godmother?”
“Oh yeah, loads! She’s great.”
“What sort of things do you do with her?”
“I mean, normal stuff? She takes me to get ice cream all the time. The other day, she rented that new horror movie that came out and watched it with me when I stayed over. My mom went nuts when she found out.”
“So you like her?”
“No, of course not. I love Lena. She’s my aunt, you know? She’s family.”
“And if you had the chance, what would you want the world to know about her?”
“That she cares, so much. And that she’s funny and super smart and helps me with homework and after my mom she’s the very best person I know.”
x
The visit to Luthor Children’s Hospital was, as far as Kara was aware, unplanned and in fact gave Jess a great deal of anxiety. For her part, Kara was mostly frustrated and annoyed, wondering if this film was worth it at all. Because Lena Luthor seemed to be asking Kara to turn off the camera more and more, especially when her day deviated at all and she was forced to leave her office.
(Walks in the park, lunches with her goddaughter, a touching moment with the child of one of her employees...all locked away somewhere in Kara’s memory, but destined to remain there instead of on film, where it should be.)
She huffed a little bit as she leaned against the wall, watching Lena walk quickly towards the group of nurses and doctors. She didn’t say anything when Jess joined her, a contemplative look on her face. “She always does this,” Jess told Kara after a long silence, rolling her eyes fondly. “She’ll cancel meetings last minute because she heard one of the kids in the hemoc ward has finished treatment or that they’re out of toys to give to the new patients.”
“Why isn’t there any press if she does this often?” Kara asked, turning to Jess but watching Lena out of the corner of her eye. She was talking to one of the doctors now, looking comically out of place with her designer clothes while surrounded by colorful artwork by kids that littered the walls of the Children’s Hospital.
Jess fixed Kara with an unimpressed look. “You’ve met her, right?” she asked rhetorically. “She goes out of her way to hide these visits. She says that she has to keep it under wraps because she wants to keep it about the kids and not her. But I think the truth is she’s just worried people would mistreat the kids and their families for allowing a ‘Luthor’ within ten feet of them.”
“Oh,” Kara said dumbly, a little stunned by the new information, and feeling guilty for her thoughts earlier. “That’s...awful.”
“I’m not telling you this for nothing, you know,” Jess continued, frowning at Kara. “She’s been avoiding lots of her usual charitable work since you’ve been around. The whole point of this was to get everyone else to see the real Lena Luthor, but she’s ruining it by being humble and noble.”
(Kara wanted to groan, roll her eyes, or better yet go over to Lena herself and shake her until she understood what Kara’s job was.
How was she supposed to make a documentary about Lena Luthor if Lena Luthor was so determined to hide herself away from the world?)
“What would you have me do?” she asked, not voicing her frustration, though it seeped into her tone anyway. “We have a deal, and she doesn’t want me to film these things.”
Jess shook her head, looking terribly unimpressed by the answer. “Don’t you have artistic integrity? Would you allow anyone else to boss you around and tell you what you could and couldn’t film?”
Kara looked over at Lena, who was now smiling at a young boy who had ambled up to her with his mother and infusion pump stand in tow. She watched as Lena actually dropped to her knees to talk to the boy, nodding vigorously at whatever he was saying. After a long moment, she turned back to Jess and shook her head. “No,” she said finally. “I guess I wouldn’t.”
And after Jess had given her another significant look before walking off, Kara raised her camera and began to film.
x
“Mr. Spheer, you’re an ex of Lena Luthor’s, right?”
“Ah, I see this documentary is quite personal. Are you sure that Lena is okay with this sort of thing going into her movie?”
“Well, it’s my movie. But she’s free to ask me to take things out.”
“Fascinating. Yes, I am Lena’s ex. I was quite brokenhearted when she broke it off to move to National City.”
“Oh, she broke it off?”
“So curious, Ms. Danvers. Perhaps you’re interested in something beyond a mere film?”
“W-what? No, that’s—please be serious, Mr. Spheer—”
“It’s Jack to you, my dear. What else do you need to know about Lena? Her favorite flowers are plumerias, her favorite food is—”
“—oh that’s really not necessary. If we could just focus on who Lena is as a person. A friend. A former girlfriend?”
“Hmm, yes. Well, just imagine your perfect woman, Ms. Danvers.”
“Oh, um, I—”
“—exactly, you see Lena. That’s an universal experience, I’m afraid. Lena is simply...too good for this world.”
“So you’d say the treatment she gets by the public is unfair?”
“It’s unfair how much people attack pineapple on pizza, Ms. Danvers. The way they speak of Lena without knowing her? That’s a pure travesty.”
x
They were about ten days into filming when Kara saw Lena relax for the first time.
She was using the word ‘relax’ rather loosely, of course. Lena didn’t do what Kara did after a long week—put on a pair of sweatpants, order loads of junk food, and watch so much Netflix that it eventually felt the need to ask her if she was still watching. In fact, Lena’s idea of relaxing was more work. Just, fun work.
She was dressed in jeans and a blue shirt, knees pulled up to her chest as she sat at her desk, mumbling under her breath as she did whatever she was doing. (She hadn’t bothered to explain to Kara, had just sighed and acquiesced to the presence of the camera in her home office.) Perched precariously at the tip of her nose were a thick black pair of glasses, her hair falling to her shoulders in gentle waves.
She looked different. Softer, somehow. Gone was all the trappings of a badass CEO, and all that was left was a clever (and beautiful) young woman, working on the things she loved in her spare time.
Kara zoomed in slightly, focusing on Lena’s face, on the furrow between her brows, her lips twisted in concentration. There was something there, something different, and Kara just wanted to—
“Is that camera heavy?” Lena asked, looking up suddenly, a curious expression on her face. She was good at that, the polite looks, gently asking for more information. Tiny eyebrow raises, nearly imperceptible softening of her eyes, lips quirked the slightest bit, all intended to disarm her quarry, making them drop their guard long enough that they give everything held close to their chest away.
“Not really,” Kara answered, grinning at Lena. This made the other woman blink in surprise, clearly not the response she was looking for, that expression on her face shifting suddenly, becoming more calculating. “I work out,” Kara went on to explain, shrugging easily, careful not to jostle the camera. “Besides, it’s not that heavy, I think about five pounds.”
“What kind of camera do you use?”
“Oh, it’s a Panasonic AG-HVX—” she cut herself off. “It’s not that interesting.” Kara adjusted her glasses and made sure Lena’s face was still in focus. Somehow, this made Lena’s tiny smile reappear. She stood up and circled her desk, and Kara was forced to back away to maintain focus.
“You love filming, don’t you?” Lena asked, and Kara blinked, not quite sure where she was going with this.
“Ms. Luthor, as I’m sure you’re aware, this film is about you.”
If she thought this would in any way cow Lena, she was wrong. Lena just grinned, looking like she’d somehow won something.
“Do you know what I don’t understand?” she said with faux casualness, crossing her arms and tapping a finger against her elbow. “Why would you, someone Cat Grant speaks so highly of, be willing to agree to this assignment? Something most people wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.”
Kara frowned, not thinking as she responded. “It wasn’t assigned, Ms. Luthor. I pitched the idea. I wanted to do this.” Lena’s words sank in a moment later. “Wait. Cat Grant spoke highly of me?”
“Why?” Lena asked, no longer smiling.
Kara blinked at the change in tone. “Why what?” she asked, genuinely confused. This was, apparently, the wrong answer, because Lena chose that moment to begin pacing in front of her desk, looking more than a little bothered.
“I don’t get it,” she said as she paced. “I tried to figure it out, looked into you, into your work. I thought maybe you were doing this to build fame, but I’ve seen your work and even without a movie about the last Luthor, I have no doubt you’ll be very popular—”
“Oh, that’s nice of you, thank y—”
“—then I thought maybe you have a vendetta against my family and just want me to look bad,” Lena continued, barreling over Kara’s words and ignoring her entirely, “but the only connection between you and my family is your cousin, Clark Kent, and he’s the journalist who broke the story on my brother, so if anything I should dislike you—”
“That’s not exactly...Clark and I aren’t—”
“—so I really need you to explain it to me. Why did you want to make this film?” She paused her brisk pacing as she asked the question, meeting Kara’s eyes with a fierce look, one Kara was infinitely glad she was capturing on film. Because this, this glint in Lena’s eyes, was why Kara wanted to do this.
“Do you remember the speech you gave when you came to National City?” Kara asked, and judging from the way Lena’s eyebrows rose in response, she was rather thrown by the question. “Because I do. I watched it maybe a few dozen times. All those horrible questions, all the absolute certainty that you were like your brother, and you kept your head up and you promised to prove them all wrong, to make up for what he did.” Kara sighed, shutting off the camera and setting it aside gently. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I was...interested. I wanted to see more.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Did I meet your expectations? Disappoint you? What?”
Kara smiled, unable to help it. “Does my opinion on you really matter?”
“Do you always answer a question with another question?” Lena shot back, eyes narrowing.
Kara’s smile just widened and she began to gather her things, preparing to leave for the night. Impressively, Lena didn’t question her further, just watched her then followed her to the door, looking rather cross. Pausing briefly to adjust her glasses and the strap of her bag, Kara turned suddenly and met Lena’s eyes. “You exceeded them. My expectations, that is,” Kara added when Lena offered only a quizzical look in response.
For a moment, Lena didn’t react, then that same look from her office—the softness of her eyes, the curve of her lips, and the pleasantly confused crinkle between her brows—overtook her expression, and she let out a laugh.
“Well, good then.”
x
“You went to boarding school with Ms. Luthor?”
“I don’t think that’s public knowledge, how do you know that?”
“Um, Ms. Arias told me about you. She mentioned your relationship with Ms. Luthor is unique.”
“Well, Sam would know, wouldn’t she?”
“Ms. Rojas, if you don’t want to speak to me, you don’t have to.”
“It’s fine. Look, Lena and I have been estranged for a while now. I...I did something to break her trust.”
“So would you say that Ms. Luthor is difficult to get along with?”
“No, I’d say that Lena values things like honesty and trust, and—you know that Austen novel? With the man who says that once you lose his good opinion, it’s gone forever?”
“Pride and Prejudice?”
“Exactly. Lena is like that.”
“Ms. Luthor is like Mr. Darcy?”
“No, she’s classic. No matter what’s going on, she’ll endure.”
“So...you were the one difficult to get along with?”
“Have you ever thought about taking your work to a whole new level, Kara? How do you feel about virtual reality?”
“Oh, um, I don’t have particular thoughts? But I’d love to know yours about Ms. Luthor. For the film.”
“She won’t believe this, or that I’m saying it coercion free, but Lena is...a visionary. More than that, she’s just a decent person. Which is more than most of us can say, don’t you think?”
x
After their conversation, Lena opened up dramatically.
(Well, dramatically was a stretch, but considering how closed off she’d been before, the difference was rather drastic.)
Kara filmed Lena’s visit to an animal shelter, capturing the way her fingers gently ran over the fur of the dog that immediately trotted over to her, placing its head in her lap. Lena had then explained that she went to shelters often, just to volunteer, as she was unable to adopt for fear of not having time to give the dog the attention it deserved.
Later that week, Lena let Kara stay later than usual, putting on some music as she got to cooking, going as far as to teach Kara the basics of the dish, laughing when Kara admitted that her skill in the kitchen was limited to making sandwiches. At one point she grabbed the camera and set it aside, dragging Kara into the kitchen, giving instructions and lessons as she swayed her hips to the music.
(It was silly, it was lighthearted, it was fun, and Kara couldn’t help it.
She forgot she was there to make a film.)
And as the days and weeks dragged on, when Lena showed off her skills at the piano—apologetically explaining she hadn’t had time to really play in months—or when she told Kara about her very ‘nerdy’ stamp collection or even when Lena seemed to ignore there was a camera between them and she began to talk about her day and her hopes for the weekend, Kara forgot that it was a job. She forgot that she was supposed to be making something, paying attention to more than Lena’s smile or the way her eyes lit up whenever she mentioned work she was particularly passionate about.
Somewhere along the way, Kara cared more about the opportunity to spend time with Lena than she did the film itself.
More worryingly, that realization didn’t even bother her.
x
“Why filmmaking?” Lena asked one morning, pushing coffee and toast towards Kara with a tiny smile. The camera was still in its bag, untouched since Kara had arrived nearly an hour earlier. “Why not journalism like your cousin?”
“My cousin and I,” Kara began awkwardly, adjusting her glasses, “well, our relationship is a little strained, I guess.” She didn’t need the slight tilt of Lena’s head to know that Lena wanted her to keep going, to explain further. She let out a soft chuckle and rubbed her forehead with the tips of her fingers. “Um, so my parents died when I was twelve. And Clark sort of...left me? I went to live with the Danvers instead, and they bought me a camera for my birthday.” Kara grinned at the very memory, still able to feel its weight in her hand, the eyepiece against her eye. “It was one of those old camcorders, do you remember? The ones with the tapes? I drove them nuts, filming literally everything. I don’t think they ever saw my face for the first few months I was with them, it was constantly behind the camera.” She didn’t explain why she wanted to document every moment with her new family, but judging from the way Lena’s eyes softened, she understood anyway. “From there it became serious. I started making films. School projects, etc. Now I’m here.”
“Why documentaries? Why not something like...oh, I don’t know, action movies?” Lena prodded, looking curious, looking interested, looking like the answer mattered.
Kara just shrugged, suddenly not able to look Lena in the eye. “I guess there’s a part of me that wanted to take after Clark.”
x
“How long have you been working for Ms. Luthor?”
“Um, this December will make seven years.”
“As her assistant, you have remarkable access to her. What’s she like?”
“Driven, ambitious, works way too hard. I don’t think she’s ever taken a holiday or even a break...but um, maybe don’t say that in the film.”
“Artistic integrity, remember? She works hard, that’s clear. But what about personally? Her relationship with you and the other employees? What kind of boss is she?”
“She cares a lot. A few years ago, before Lex Luthor, well. You know. Before all that, LuthorCorp was facing serious losses. Mr. Luthor wanted to just get rid of entire departments, but Ms. Luthor said the research was vital, and more than that, the researchers were important. She convinced her brother to keep them on—she won’t admit it, but it was more than being persuasive. She paid for it out of her own pocket.”
“So you’d say she’s charitable?”
“No, she’s passionate. And she fights for the things she believes in. Ms. Luthor likes to say that charity implies pity, and she doesn’t do anything out of pity. She just does what’s right by people.”
“Some would disagree, they’d argue that LuthorCorp, and by extension its new iteration, L-Corp, don’t care about people, but about profits. Do you think that’s a fair assessment of the company you’ve devoted seven years to?”
“Look. I get it, people are suspicious of L-Corp because it used to be LuthorCorp. But it’s not just a name change. When Lena took over, she gutted her company. There’s not a single program left from Mr. Luthor’s time as CEO. L-Corp is all Ms. Luthor.”
“So if L-Corp is Ms. Luthor, who is Ms. Luthor?”
“She’s a woman who’s been hurt all her life, Kara Danvers, and whose only goal is to keep as many people as she can from hurting too. Sometimes I just wish she realized she doesn’t deserve to be hurt anymore either.”
“Oh.”
“Also, I don’t care about your artistic integrity, that last bit does not go in the film.”
x
One afternoon, when Kara was dangerously close to dozing off on the couch in Lena’s office—camera turned off and set aside, not really needing more footage of Lena working at her desk—Lena suddenly jumped to her feet, an excited gleam in her eyes.
“They’ve done it,” she said, the smile forming on her lips so wide that Kara found herself smiling back.
“Done what?” Kara asked, fairly sure this would lead to Lena’s refrain of ‘that’s company business and I’m afraid you’re not privy to that information’ but instead, Lena looked at her appraisingly, then rolled her eyes.
“If I allow you to bring your camera in R&D, do you swear not to film my ongoing projects?”
“You’re going to let me film in R&D?” Kara said excitedly, jumping to her feet and grabbing her camera.
“Kara, do you swear?”
“Yes, yes, of course, Ms. Luthor. I absolutely swear.”
And the next thing Kara knew, she was filming in the one place she’d been told was off-limits, capturing the lab and Lena talking to her researchers animatedly about the advancement they’d made in gene therapy, not entirely surprised when Lena shoved the scientists towards Kara and urged them to brag about their achievement—while also warning them to be as vague as possible—and then sank into the background, clearly thrilled to have her scientists as the center of attention.
And later, when Lena decided to actually take a lunch hour as a ‘reward’ for the great strides L-Corp had made, she took Kara along, bought three different appetizers, and smiled her wide smile before she said, “It’s Lena, by the way. Just Lena.”
Mouth still bulging with the three potstickers she’d practically inhaled, Kara couldn’t manage much more than a nod, but later—when she was alone—she tried saying the name aloud, and it sent a shiver down her spine.
x
“Mrs. Luthor—”
“It’s doctor, actually.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Dr. Luthor. You adopted Ms. Luthor when she was four, is that correct?”
“I’m afraid I don’t have time for this nonsense. I consented to this interview only to say one thing: Lena was always the more clever of my children, but she’s foolish and soft, and this silly film is yet another example of that.”
“You agreed to meet with me to just say...that. Okay. That’s um. Fine.”
x
As the weeks dragged on, Kara had little reason to continue filming. Her deadline with Cat Grant was fast approaching, and she had more than enough footage. All that really remained was editing, of putting the final pieces together. But she found herself filming anyway.
Every day, she’d make her way to Lena’s apartment, making flimsy excuses about how certain footage was no good, or had been corrupted, and that she needed retakes of Lena doing ordinary things (like reading the paper, cooking dinner, or talking about her day). She knew that Lena could tell her excuses were just that, but mercifully, Lena didn’t seem to want to call her out on it, merely gave soft reminders not to stay up so late every night to edit (the ‘you could just as easily stop wasting your time here and be editing during normal hours’ going unsaid).
(Jess had rolled her eyes when Kara came by L-Corp and Lena mentioned offhandedly that Kara somehow hadn’t gotten a shot of Lena entering her building in all the time she’d shadowed the CEO, and wasn’t that odd?)
But what Kara knew, what made her stretch out these moments as long as she possibly could, was that once the final product popped into existence, once she showed Lena and got her okay to send off to Cat Grant, that was it.
No more Lena.
And that terrified her.
(So she gathered more footage, fruitlessly hoping that the final product would never be ready, dragging her feet at every step.
She edited, studying Lena’s every expression, tried to pinpoint the exact moment she’d started to fall for the not-so-detached CEO extraordinaire, and wished it didn’t all have to come to an end.)
x
Two days after Kara had sent Lena the finished film, she got a curt email from the CEO herself with only three words: come see me.
Jess gave no indication about how her boss was feeling when Kara arrived, merely stared evenly at Kara and gestured with her head for her to just go on in. When Kara tried to ask her, Jess shook her head, pointed at the door to Lena’s office, and made a shooing gesture.
“It’s odd to see you without a camera,” Lena said when Kara sat down across from her, trying to keep her hands from fidgeting.
“It’s odd to be in here without a camera.” Kara took a deep breath. “Did you watch it?” she blurted, unable to keep it in. “What did you think?”
“You’re really fond of certain themes,” Lena said, then she raised her eyebrow. “You also filmed quite a bit when I had asked you not to.”
“Artistic integrity?” Kara tried, and Lena...laughed.
“I don’t know if I agree with the way you portrayed me,” she said slowly as her amusement faded. “You took a lot of liberties.”
“I was very faithful to the subject of the film, Lena.”
“What do you think you were trying to say?” Lena asked, waving off Kara’s comment.
“What meaning did you get from it?”
Lena studied her for a moment, as if she was trying to read Kara’s mind. “I’m not some selfless genius, Kara.”
“Is that what you think the film is saying?” Kara asked her, not rising to the obvious bait. “Like I said, Lena. I was very faithful to the subject of the film.” For a long moment, Lena didn’t respond, and Kara felt the worry she’d managed to push away since sending the film to Lena creep back in. “Does this mean you don’t approve of the film?”
“Hmm?” Lena said, distracted. “No, I’ve already sent it along to Cat Grant, giving my okay. Even though you broke our agreement, I can’t deny the final result was very favorable to me.”
“I wouldn’t have made something that wasn’t completely true,” Kara said, somewhat hotly, most of her irritation bleeding away with the knowledge that Cat Grant was in possession of the final product, that the rest was up to her.
Lena smiled, eyes soft, and she nodded her head almost incredulously. “No, you wouldn’t. I know that.” She cleared her throat, seeming a bit nervous. “But I was thinking. I’ve been missing our talks about your work, and I know you don’t like talking about what you’ve made, but perhaps you’d make an exception for me. Would you be willing to give me a private showing of your film? Give me all the insider secrets? I know your subject quite well, it would be a fun exercise.”
Kara’s heart slammed to a stop, the jump-started at the sight of Lena’s amused eyes, that tiny curve of her lips. “A private showing, huh?” Kara mumbled, feeling a little dazed. “I still won’t tell you what I was trying to say.”
“That’s completely fair.”
“But I suppose I could give you some insight on my thoughts.”
“Only if you wanted.”
“It may have to be more than one session,” Kara said, trying and failing to stop the spread of her smile. “There’s a lot of footage you know.”
“So it’s a date?” Lena asked, and Kara couldn’t help her eager nod.
“It’s definitely a date.”
Oh you could write one where reader and Supergirl are fighting together against some supervillain and reader gets hurt and almost dies and Kara is freaking out because she can't lose her girlfriend and just... angst (please don't kill reader though, i'm begging you)
Kara Danvers x Reader #5
Words: 1,905
Warnings: Angst, Explosion not described in detail. Just an aftermath.
Notes:
MWHAHAHA! I technically didn’t listen to your plead...so i’m sorry? (Thank you for the request and sorry for all spelling mistakes)
——
They were kids.
You weren’t bulletproof like Kara, definitely not grenade proof, you knew that...but they were kids. Kids clutching onto their mom looking terrified. Terrified that their mom would get hurt, terrified that the three of them were going to die.
You’re terrified too. Lately as your life has gotten better with Kara, beautiful, caring Kara, you’ve been getting more scared everyday, scared that something was going to happen to ruin your happiness.
The fear is almost enough to paralyze you when you see the latest National City supervillain get ready to throw the grenade, but alas...when the man throws the grenade the stupid instinct to protect overtakes you and you jump into the air to catch it like a ball, before it can get to close to the family.
You’re more invincible than them, even if you’re not nearly as invincible as Kara...it’s time to test that theory, you think bitterly.
Turns out—when the grenade goes off and a piercing scream hits the air—you’re not that much more invincible than a regular human.
Kara, you think, tears running down your face, Kara, Kara, Kara. Kara. Everything hurts but all you can think about is Kara and whether or not she’s going to be okay fighting without you. Forever, possibly. Fighting without you forever, and just thinking about your death feels like ice water being poured over you until the cold sinks in and it’s just panic.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
It takes moments before she’s by your side, moments that feel like a lifetime, she was slowed by the kryptonite she was fighting against and wasn’t able to get to you in time when the grenade went off but now she’s here, and she’s sobbing. Sobs that wrack her body, and you’re trying to sit up despite the ringing in your ear.
“Kara!” You yell, eyes wide, and you don’t want to be doing this to her, you want to pretend like you’re okay with this—you want to be strong for her—but you can’t. You can’t, because holy fuck. Fuck. “I can’t feel my legs, Kara. Baby, I can’t feel anything. I can’t...why can’t I move?”
Kara places a hand on your chest, and you can feel that, it hurts, “Alex,” she says into the comms, “it’s Y/N...she’s badly injured. I can’t bring her to the DEO, I can’t fly; the kryptonite is still in the air around us, and I can’t move her away from it either.”
You hear Kara’s panicked voice next to you, and when you focus you hear it in your own comms.
Alex’s voice crackles through immediately, and even she sounds scared, “how bad, Kara?”
“She says she can’t feel her legs, and she...she’s losing a lot of blood. She’s cold, too, and her breathing is labored,” Kara’s practically ranting now, her fingers shaking against your chest. “I’d put pressure on the wound but there’s a lot of blood and I don’t know—”
You turn your face away from Kara when her hand travels to your cheek, and you try to tune her out, because her face...it really says everything about your condition, and you don’t want to hear Kara talk about all of the ways you’re dying.
You catch the last thing Alex says and it fills you with dread that makes your bones feel even heavier, “keep her awake, Kara. There’s no telling if she’ll wake up again if she falls asleep now.”
Kara’s resulting sob rips your heart to shreds.
“I didn’t realize until I met you how much I don’t want to die,” you tell her after a moment filled with her cries. You’ve never felt so scared in your life (besides after Kara’s fight with Reign) “but I really don’t want to, Kara. I really don’t want to.”
“You won’t,” Kara says, trying to give you a reassuring smile, “you won’t because I need you to stay. What am I supposed to do without you?” She tries to laugh afterwards but it’s really just a choked sound, and you can hear the fear in her words.
The iron taste that was on your tongue felt like death, but now as you slowly start to taste it less, and as the smell of gasoline slowly slips away, you wonder if this is really a sign of death. The reapers signature.
“You’ll live.” You say, “you have to. There’s no other choice.” Your voice is filled with too much certainty for a dying woman, “It’ll be fine. You’ll get to eat the last popsicle in the fridge,” a humorless chuckle forces its way out of your throat, “I hid it. It’s under the frozen peas.”
You can tell by the look on Kara’s face what she’s thinking about. A half empty bed when she goes home alone to your shared apartment, your favorite mug sitting on the counter half full of cold coffee, your dishes still in her sink—your sink—your clothes in the washing machine, your…
“I can’t,” Kara whispers, her voice filled with the amount of sorrow only she can manage, “I can’t lose two of my worlds. I’m not strong enough.”
Kara Zor-El not being strong enough. It’s a humorous thought. You know Kara will fight, she’ll fight because it’s all she knows. She’ll find her reason. She won’t give up on the world, even if she gives up on herself for some time. It’s the one thing you need to be sure of right now.
“Yeah you are,” you mumble, trying to lift your shaky hand to cup her cheek. She grabs a hold of your hand and helps you to your destination. You try not to scream curses at the world at the sight of your blood on her pale cheek. “You, Kara Danvers, are an anomaly in the way you never let anything knock you down.”
“This is enough,” Kara promises, and it’s the last promise you’d ever want to hear from her, “you’re enough to ruin me.”
“Kara,” you whisper, hating the world so furiously in that moment for all it wants to take. “That’s the last thing I want to hear...I only ever want to build you up.”
“And you do,” Kara says, “but love really does both, doesn’t it? Sometimes it hurts as much as it heals.”
“That isn’t fair,” you whimper out, and Kara nods against your hand, closing her eyes and trying not to breathe in the smell of your blood.
Moments later Kara opens her eyes in a panic after realizing that you haven’t spoken, only to see you trying to blink your eyes awake. She squeezes your hand repeatedly, trying to get your attention. “Y/N, it’s not time.” She tells you desperately, “it’s not time.”
One of her tears fall against your cheek, causing you to pout. “Stop crying,” you slur, delirious from the blood loss, “I resent it when you cry because of me.”
Kara shakes her head, only crying harder.
You smile up at her sadly, “I'm sorry i’m dying.” And you mean it.
“Stop saying that,” Kara pleads, like it’s breaking her, “stop.”
You wish you could give Kara what she wants but your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier and you don’t think you have much time. “Just tell Alex to name a kid after me, or at least tell her to name a fish after me.”
Kara’s shaking her head and shaking your arm, trying to get you to open your eyes again, “Y/N! Hey! Stop, come on, baby, just open your eyes…”
You try, you really do, you’ve never tried so hard to listen before, and it works for a moment, just for a second you manage to open your eyes, much to Kara’s relief, and that’s when you finally notice a crowd of people and a slumped alien (the man you two were fighting) a little ways behind you and Kara. When did Kara do that to him? When did the people come?
It’s when you see Alex though, rushing out of a black van, that you feel some sort of relief. Alex will protect Kara when you’re gone. You’re sure of it.
—
“Wake up! Wake up,” Kara sobs, “Alex, Alex—please, she’s not—”
—
“She died, Kara, in the van, we managed to bring her back...but things are looking uncertain right now. For now, the best thing you can do is look after yourself”
Kara’s glowing red eyes snap up from the floor towards Alex. Her powers have been going haywire since they arrived at the DEO. “Save her,” Kara pleads, voice hoarse from crying. “Please.”
—
It’s late at night after Kara hears your heart stop (the second time) that she gets placed in kryptonite handcuffs.
Alex doesn’t want to do it but Kara isn’t in control of her powers anymore, and she almost seriously hurt someone. Multiple times.
Kara doesn’t leave your side after they get your heart going again, she can’t hear your heart with the kryptonite on so the only thing she can take comfort in is the beeping of your heart monitor.
—
You wake up two weeks after your accident.
Kara’s asleep next to you when you do.
You’re confused and thirsty so it takes you several long moments for you to remember what happened, and once you do you’re sobbing hard, crying loud enough to startle awake a sleeping Kara.
She freezes when she sees you, you’re curled up in the hospital bed and shaking with your relief and the leftover fear, and she’s watching you like she doesn’t know what to do now that you’re awake.
Shes been praying for this moment, imagining it, waiting for it day after day, minute after minute, second after second, but now that it’s actually happened she’s paralyzed with her overwhelming emotions.
“Y/N?” Kara stutters, eyes filling with her own tears of relief.
You laugh at Kara’s face, loud and completely joyful, and suddenly she’s sobbing too, grinning all the while, because you’re here—finally— you’re gonna be okay. You’re gonna be okay, and you’re laughing, and the world is finally okay again too.
“Damn, weren’t we dramatic?” You smirk, paying no mind to the tears running down your or her face.
Kara laughs, pulling you into a careful hug (she got her handcuffs taken off only a day ago). “I missed you.”
“I missed you, too,” you whisper back, tightening your hold on Kara as much as you can and simply breathing her in. Breathing life in.
“I feel like i’m dreaming,” Kara says after a while, voice trembling. You feel like you're dead...and like you're in heaven. Is this heaven?
“You aren’t,” you reassure Kara anyways.
She nods against your shoulder, shaking even harder than you were. “Are you okay?” You ask worriedly.
“you’re the one who had to go and die two times.”
“Nearly three times,” Alex says from the doorway.
You notice Kara tense and shift in front of you until she realizes it’s just Alex, and you think that’ll probably be something you two will have to talk about, but for now you roll your eyes at Alex and say, much to both Kara’s and her amusement; “the only reason you tried so hard to save me is because you didn’t want to name your kid after me, isn’t it?”
Alex’s shrug and “maybe” gets a glare from Kara and a smirk from you.
A Pirate and the Prince
I might do another part of this but for now, enjoy!
---
Kara laughed as she raced through the streets. The shouts from the guards and the townspeople only fueled her laughter.
She hasn’t meant to get caught; she never really does. But they needed supplies and she was getting a little angsty on the ship. So, without so much of a word to any of her crewmates, she snuck off the ship and went to town.
She knew she was wanted; she was one of the most famous captains to sail the ocean.
She just wasn’t expecting to see so many wanted posters around town. She had gotten the last thing on her list and was nearing the castle before a guard noticed her and called for others. She was just glad she had enough time to send a message to the others.
Oh, Alex was going to be so mad.
“Halt!” a guard shouted. She looked back and gave them a bright smile.
“Don’t think I will!” she teased. She turned a corner sharply. and ran into someone. She
staggered back, blinking as she looked at the person she ran into.
He was wearing the royal colours and Kara could only assume he was part of the royal family.
Querl stumbled back and blinked at the woman in front of him. She was dressed like a pirate and there was something familiar about her that he couldn’t place. Before he had the chance to say anything to her, a voice rang out, “she’s over here!”
“Guess that’s my cue,” she said. Without thinking, Kara grabbed Querl’s hand and started running. Querl stumbled a little until he could keep pace with her.
“Quick! She has Prince Querl!” She heard the guard tell. Kara raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything. The two of them kept running and it felt like they weren’t getting anywhere.
“Here, this way,” Querl said, pulling Kara to the right. She followed but pointed at the dead end.
“I know,” he said as he looked around. When he was satisfied that no one was watching, he pressed a brink.
Kara watched in surprise as part of the wall became a door. Querl pushed it open and pulled her inside before closing it.
“Great, now we cannot see,” Kara complained. Querl covered her mouth and shushed her. Kara only glared but did as he asked. When he knew she wasn’t going to make any noise, he dropped his hands and only then noticed how close he was to the pirate captain.
He could see the beauty of her blue eyes and noted she saw a lot and wondered what the stories told. He noticed the crinkles around her eyes as she smiled and found himself wondering what it would be like to make her happy.
The sounds of footsteps coming their way shook Querl out of his thoughts. They listened quietly as the guards stopped in front of the wall. “They were here!” someone yelled.
“But you have to admit, that Captain Danvers sure is something,” another guard said wistfully. Querl’s eyes widened when he finally had the name to the face in front of him. To say he was surprised was an understatement.
“Oh shut up,” another said, and judging by the clanking of the armor, they could only assume that the guard who praised Kara was pushed.
“They couldn’t have gotten far,” another said, bringing the conversation back on track. “Split up, we can’t lose them.” They began running again and soon it was quiet.
“Nice hiding place,” Kara said once she knew they were alone. “Now what do you suggest we do?” Querl didn’t answer and felt along the walls until he found a torch. He lit it and gestured for Kara to follow. With no other option, she did.
“Didn’t expect the crown prince to help a wanted criminal,” Kara noted after walking for a while in silence. Querl shrugged, looking at her from the corner of his eye. She was walking a little way behind him, the passageway too small for the two of them to walk side by side.
“When you’re already defining the Queen’s orders of staying within the castle walls. One can only add more to their defiance.”
Kara quirked an eyebrow, impressed. “So,” she started looking around the dark tunnel, “I didn’t know the town had secret tunnels around it.”
Querl hummed in thought. “Only a select few know of them,” he answered. “I stumbled into one by accident when I was ten, and I use them if I want to sneak out of the castle.”
“Do the guards know about them?”
“No, but I suspect that they will return to the castle and inform my mother about my situation,” he said as an afterthought. “She knows about the tunnels, and if she isn’t busy, she’ll come down here herself to find me. So, we have to hurry to your destination.”
“She’ll be worried about you, won’t she? I mean, they probably think I’ve kidnapped you or something.” Querl snorted and looked back to give her a look. “What?”
“You practically did kidnap me,” he answered, “you took my hand and ran forcing me to follow you.”
“Okay, yes that may be true,” she agreed, but pointed at him to emphasize her point, “but you could have let go at any time. Instead of doing that, you helped me escape and you still are. So that makes you a criminal.”
Querl shook his head but didn’t fight her on that, she did have a point. Kara beamed and celebrated her victory in silence.
“You’re wrong you know,” Querl said after a few moments of silence. Kara hummed and turned her attention on him in confusion, he sighed keeping his eyes forward. “About my mother. You’re wrong, she won’t be worried about me. Father might, but Mother wouldn’t. She’d be more worried about the heir to the throne more than my wellbeing.”
Kara stayed silent, unsure what to say to that. She couldn’t understand what he must be feeling.
She had parents who loved and cared about her and not the title she held. Even when she ran away and became a pirate, they still loved her. They made sure of that.
“I’m sorry,” was what she said instead. Querl shrugged and that was the end of that conversation.
They walked until they reached a crossroads causing Querl to stop and turned to her. “What?” she asked.
“Where is it that you wanted to exactly?”
“I thought you knew,” she said and shot him a grin when he gave her a pointed look. “The docks. That’s where my ship is.”
“You’re a wanted criminal and you still dock your ship where everyone can see it,” Querl questioned though it sounded more of a statement. Kara shrugged, studying each path wondering which would lead to the docks.
“What can I say? I love living on the edge,” she said and her smile grew. Querl raised an eyebrow but didn’t question it. Instead, he turned left and started walking, Kara was quick to follow.
“So,” she started and Querl quickly learned that this certain captain doesn’t like the quiet. Which was fine with Querl, he wasn’t the biggest fan of the quiet either. “What made you decide to help me?”
“What made you decide to become a pirate?” Querl asked, making another turn.
“Those are two completely different questions!” Kara exclaimed, throwing her hands up. “Your question involves a whole backstory, which I’m sure you don’t want to hear. My question shouldn’t.”
“What if it does?” Querl pressed, “what if both our questions involve a deep answer that neither of us knows?”
Kara opened her mouth to answer but quickly closed it unsure what to say. “Okay, I’ll give you that,” she said eventually. “How about I’ll tell you the short version of mine and you do the same?”
Querl thought about it for a moment before nodding. Kara grinned and stretched her arms up before locking her hands together behind her head.
“My parents had my future planned, I wasn’t into it so I ran away,” she answered, with a thoughtful look in her eyes. “It took years to become what I am, but I’m happy and I’d probably do it again.”
“And your parents? They’re okay that you're one of the most wanted captains of the sea?”
Kara hummed and dropped her arms. “Not at first, but they saw how happy I was and let me be.
Though they did try to get my sister to follow me to make sure I was okay. She refused. It wasn’t until I became captain of my ship that she joined me.”
Querl nodded, with another question ready to be asked. But he stopped himself, they did promise to answer with a shorter version.
“I’m assuming you heard stories about my mother,” Querl started and kept his gaze forward, even when he could feel her eyes on him. When Kara hummed in acknowledgment, Querl continued. “I can assure you that most stories are true.”
Kara’s eyes widened in surprise. “I heard she’s ruthless in battle and around the castle. That she wants to gain control of the surrounding kingdoms.”
“Mm, that is correct,” he said, and Kara could hear a hint of sadness as he continued. “She believes the only way to rule is with an iron fist. I don’t believe her way of thinking. It’s cruel and everyone deserves a chance to be heard. As you can guess, we don’t get along. I try to do everything I can to stop her and she tries everything she can to stop me.”
“Why don’t you just run away?” Kara asked. Querl shrugged and turned another corner.
“I wouldn’t know where to go where she couldn’t find me,” he answered, “and even if I did, she would stop at nothing to bring me back home.”
The rest of the walk was spent in silence, neither of them had anything to talk about. Well, there were plenty of things they could have said, but there was a silent agreement of no talking.
Eventually, they were nearing the end of their walk, given that they saw the light at the end.
“We’re almost there!” Kara shouted happily, almost hitting Querl’s arm. He smiled and they quickened their pace.
They had almost reached the entrance before they heard someone yell behind them. “There! They’re here!”
Kara turned around and saw the Queen and a handful of men at the end of the tunnel. She turned back to Querl and he could see the panic in her eyes.
Without thinking, Querl grasped her hand, and together they took off for the entrance. “Where’s your ship?” Querl asked, squinting as the sun hit their eyes. Blinking a few times, his eyes adjusted and he looked around.
Kara did as well and broke into a smile, glad that they had gotten her note on time. “There!” she shouted, pointing at the lone ship that was sailing away from the port.
“They’re sailing away?!” Querl exclaimed, starting to panic, Kara could tell. She squeezed his hand and smiled when he turned to look at her.
There’s an unspoken question of what now? And it prompts a twinkle in Kara’s eyes that both intrigued and scared Querl.
“We get creative!” she answered, before taking off towards the cliff. Hand still clasped in hers, Querl followed without a second thought.
“Get them!” the queen yelled, surprising the townspeople around the port. The guards took off running as the queen ignored everyone, and started towards Kara and Querl.
By the time the queen and the guards caught up to the two, they were standing at the edge of the cliff. Querl looked down unsure, whereas Kara was still grinning. “What now? Querl whispered, turning to look at her.
“There’s nowhere else to run,” the queen called before Kara had the chance to answer. “Turn around, you are under arrest.”
“I’m sorry,” Kara whispered. Before Querl had a chance to ask what she meant, Kara wrapped an arm around his waist and he felt a blade against his throat. He gulped but chose not to say anything. They slowly turned around and the guards drew their weapons but didn’t advance.
“Queen Fabala,” Kara greeted. Although she was smiling, it wasn’t a pleasant greeting. “I’d say it was an honour, but I’d be lying.”
Fabala hummed, her eyes were on Querl as she spoke. “What brings Kara Danvers to the Kingdom of Coly?”
“Captain,” she corrected and shrugged. “Just some shopping, nothing more.”
“Well regardless of why you are in town. You are still under arrest,” Fabala said, taking a step forward and stopped when Kara tightened her grip on her dagger. “You are, after all, a wanted criminal.”
“They don’t call me Captain Kara Danvers for nothing,” she said, taking a step back until her heel hit nothing but air. “But I’m afraid this is where I bid you goodbye.”
As quickly as she could, she whispered something to Querl and kissed him on the cheek before she jumped.
Surprised at the sudden loss of contact, Querl turned and looked down to see Kara swimming towards her ship. He heard the guards running up behind him and peered down.
“What do you have us do, Your Majesty?” the captain of the guard asked.
“Position some men around the ports and once they finish docking, have your men arrest them.”
“Your Majesty, Prince Querl,” he said, bowing before barking out orders as they left.
“Are you alright, Querl?” Fabala asked, checking him to see if he had any cuts or bruises.
“I’m fine, Mother,” he answered, though his attention was still on Kara. Still thinking about what she had whispered to him.
“Are you sure? She didn’t do anything to cause you harm?”
“No.”
“Well then,” she said, smoothing out her dress. She turned around and started walking. “Let us be off.” Querl stayed there as she continued walking. Noticing he wasn’t following she cleared her throat. “Come on Querl, let us go.”
Your life is yours Querl, do what you want to do, Kara’s words whispered into his ears.
So, he jumped.
Gonna make full use of my ‘comic rant’ tag and roast Future State: Superwoman.
Spoilers! And yelling! Of the disgruntled kind!
So a few things at the start here: 1.) I wanted to love this book. I wanted it to be great. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt, in spite of some iffy stuff in the solicit text. So this rant is not coming from a place of having decided this was going to be awful ahead of time. 2.) My tolerance for bad Supergirl comics is pretty high! Takes a lot for me to actually come out and say that a particular issue is trash. Reader: This story is trash.
It’s not ‘middle-aged white guys writing/drawing a story about sending a minor to a potentially hostile planet fully nude’ trash, mind you. It’s the compost bin, rather than the landfill. Slightly nicer trash, but it still stinks to high heaven. Allow me to expand!
PROLOGUE - SUMMARY: ...I actually can’t summarize this comic b/c it would devolve into a lot of senseless yelling. We’ll just have to tease out this terrible plot as we go along.
PART I - DEAD DOGS TELL BAD TALES: The comic opens with Kara standing at Krypto’s grave. That’s not why this comic is trash, but it bears mentioning. Because why. Why would you do this.
PART II - IN WHICH IT ONLY GETS WORSE: So, Kara has a running inner monologue, and the main thing we gather from Kara’s thoughts is that it was Krypto who taught her to be a hero. On paper, that sounds very sweet! In practice, it reads as Kara having no moral center whatsoever—whatever good qualities she might possess, she did not learn from her parents, or her foster parents, or friends, or fellow heroes. Nor do they come from within Kara herself. Nope, t’was Krypto who taught Kara not to be a jealous rage monster. That is not hyperbole--Kara’s walking around angry about her cousin all the time and she’s like, ‘It was you, Krypto, who taught me not to judge, and to let go of anger.’ Listen, I love Krypto, but this? This is, as the youth would say, a bad look.
PART III - THOSE CERTAINLY ARE...SOME THEMES: The set-up here is that Kara is on the moon, and has established a sanctuary for alien refugees. That’s a dynamite idea! I love that! Buuuuut Kara didn’t look at the plight of alien refugees and say, ‘I want to help!’ Really, she didn’t even look at herself and say, ‘I don’t want others to feel like I’ve felt.’ No, she said, ‘Earth won’t accept me as a hero, and Clark didn’t name me protector of Earth, so. I’m out!’ (Honestly, if your moral compass is so whack that you need a dog to walk you back from Hulk-Smashing...can’t say I blame Clark for not picking you, Kara!) But apparently, the people on the moon don’t really like her either. And it is literally never explained why. There’s a whole montage of Kara fixing stuff and saving lives and all the moon folk just glare at her. This makes both the moon people AND Kara look like a**holes, because they come across as ungrateful, and she comes across as a glory hound. Thanks! I hate it! So the ‘peace’ Kara’s found on the moon isn’t really peaceful at all, cause she still resents her cousin, and people still don’t like her, in spite of the fact that she’s constantly performing acts of service for them.
Also, side note, I’m just now realizing this is an entire population of alien refugees...and Kara is somehow still the odd one out. Like, Earth I get, because everyone else is a human and maybe freaked out by the super powers. But a bunch of aliens? WHY. Why did you do this. Why did this need to be set on the moon with alien refugees if you’re not going to interrogate Kara’s identity as an alien refugee herself AND all of the aliens are inexplicably humanoid in appearance and utterly ordinary in terms of power levels.
Like. This is not the CW show, where they have a budget, and a huge ensemble cast to serve. YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE. AAARRRRRGHHHH.
PART III CONT’D: There’s also this weird ‘birthright’ element introduced...like, Clark and Jon stole Kara’s ‘right’ to be earth’s defender which is...a terrible reading of Kara’s modern origin. It brings in the idea that Kara is a ‘chosen one’ and because she didn’t get to be that chosen one, all of her hero work is for nothing. Never mind the whole central conceit of what makes Clark and Kara heroic...that they have this incredible power, and choose to do good with it. Nah...it’s all about her ‘right’ to protect the people of Earth! And mean ol’ Clark took that away! THANKS. I HATE IT.
PART IV - A POOR USE OF SPACE: So, all of the Future State books kind of struggle with the issue of too much exposition, which is understandable. They have to introduce an entirely new status quo in a very limited amount of literal page space, so you *really* have to have a handle on how you allocate your time and focus.
Introducing a brand new, lore-heavy heroic character who gets all of the development and dynamic art and pulls focus away from the character you’re meant to be writing is a bad use of a two issue limited series.
Like, this is a crappy Supergirl comic but it’s a great backdoor pilot for a Lynari ongoing, I guess.
Imagine if in the Jon Superman book, they introduced a random, brand new best friend for Jon, and he got the big character arc instead of Jon. That’s something you save for an arc in an ongoing title, NOT A TWO ISSUE EVENT COMIC.
Back to said new character, there’s a lot of forced attempts to parallel Kara and Lynari, but Lynari’s backstory is so confusing, rushed, and poorly explained that it’s like: okay, they’re both...angry? And the moon jerks hate them? ...uh. Okay.
(I’m gonna bring back my ‘why is this set on the moon, even’ question so that my ‘poor use of space’ header becomes a better joke.)
PART V - I'M HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO...B/C THERE SURE AIN’T ONE HERE: I’ve already mentioned that Krypto was apparently Kara’s conscience so when Lynari’s aunt arrives to...kill them? (again, everything about Lynari’s backstory is rushed and poorly explained) Kara gets real mad and basically pulls a Gothel: ‘You want me to be the bad guy? Fine! Now I’m the bad guy.’ But thank goodness Lynari is there to tell Kara no! Don’t murder the giant aunt eel! Lynari then steals Kara’s powers and gives up the swamp jewel that’s been hidden inside their body and now their aunt is less murder-y!
WOW. Couldn’t even give the big damn hero moment to Kara in her own book, huh?
So the day is saved. It takes Kara a while to regain her powers, and it’s only then, when she’s no longer ‘above’ the moon jerks, that they’re like, ‘oh, we like her!’ There is a bit of narration about how that attitude is awful. But that narration is provided by Lynari. See, the inner monologue is no longer Kara’s thoughts, but rather it has switched to Lynari’s point of view. They’re telling us this story. And do you know why?
PART VI - WHY THIS COMIC *SUCKS*: KARA DIES. SHE’S THE FRIGGIN’ ‘SECOND GRAVE’ OF THE TITULAR ‘TWO GRAVES’
Fudge this comic to heck.
See, Kara dies on the moon, presumably of old age. She’s buried next to Krypto. And this random character who we’re suddenly supposed to care about tells us her story. Not Clark. Not the Danvers. Not Brainy. Not even one of the supporting cast members from her solo title. No one from Kara’s life is mentioned at all, save for Jon and Clark, and they’re pretty much relegated to flashbacks of Kara punching them.
PART VII - TIME TO COMPARE DEATHS, I GUESS: First and foremost can I just say that I hate that’s a sentence that I’m typing about Kara in the year of our lord, 2021. But okay: Kara’s big famous death in Crisis stopped the entire DC universe cold. Everyone paused in the middle of the destruction of the multiverse to mourn her loss and honor her (GENUINELY HEROIC) sacrifice. Clark and Barbara--two established characters with a strong connection/relationship to Kara--offered lovely eulogies.
This one: Kara gets to die of old age in obscurity after a lifetime of striving to be recognized and only achieving it by de-powering and serving a population of jerks.
Not the warm and fuzzy ending you think it is!
(Meanwhile, Clark lives for millennia and spawns an entire dynasty of Els, all of ‘em out there, protecting the cosmos. I was looking forward to House of El in the hopes of maybe seeing some Kara stuff but NOPE. Thanks to Superwoman, we’re probably not gonna see any future Kara stuff beyond this! G R E A T)
And like, the argument could be made that this ending makes Kara happy. This is the life she chooses! She wants to be alone and garden on the moon! Except, we get zero insight from Kara regarding the remainder of her life. We only have Lynari’s narration and some montage shots...nearly all of which focus on other characters. But honestly, even if we did get Kara’s side of things, I doubt it would shed much light on her feelings, bEEECAUSE...
PART VIII - SUPER BLAND: This Kara really has no personality outside of ‘detached and vaguely bitter.’ I like Sauvage, I think she’s an incredibly talented artist, but here, Kara is stiff and her expression often reads as aloof. She’s very pretty, but it comes at the expense of being expressive. (And I know Sauvage can do expressive stuff...because Lyanari gets to be expressive.) Like...I love that shojo manga vibe but this is a Kara devoid of spark and warmth.
...Like...Melissa Benoist’s portrayal of Kara is right there...
I’ve already sort of touched on this but her inner monologue doesn’t have much personality either. She’s just parroting the same, ‘I need to do as Krypto taught me!’ nonsense for both issues. Until, of course, we shift to Lynari’s narration, and lose Kara’s thread entirely.
PART IX - LET’S WRAP THIS UP: This book frustrates me to no end because it had a lot of stuff going for it. It’s got a female writer and artist--still a rarity for the Supergirl book--it’s a limited series mostly free of continuity and character baggage, and it’s not tied down to the grimdark cyberpunk stuff happening in the Gotham books. YOU COULD’VE DONE ANYTHING. And, once again, DC goes with a pitch that’s: Kara is angry, Kara resents Clark...and Kara dies.
It’s also happening...right as Kara has no dedicated ongoing title, the movie’s been shelved, the TV show is entering its sixth and final season, and all promotion has shifted to new CW and HBO shows.
*screams into the void*
MAAAAAAN I hate this book. I hate that it retroactively makes me hate the Andreyko run a little bit--a run that I took to be about a traumatized young woman forced to confront her grief, and who leans on a beloved animal companion for comfort. Here, Krypto is L I T E R A L L Y the reason Kara’s not constantly frying folks with her heat vision.
I hate that this book has made me use the word ‘literally’ so much in this rant.
I hate that this could possibly be more in continuity than Millennium.
Remember Millennium? Where Kara was in like...five pages? And she was warm, and kind, and promised to help Rose because it was the right thing to do, and oh yes, WAS PRESIDENT OF EARTH?!??! AND A CLASSY OLD LADY!?!?!?!?! WHO WAS STILL ALIVE AND KICKIN’ IN THE FAR FLUNG FUTURE!?!?!?!?!
I hate that I’m using my lunch hour to rant about how much I hate this comic.
I hate that DC editorial seems hell-bent on erasing the interesting aspects of Kara’s character to sand her down to ‘the angry one’ or ‘Batman 2.0′
PART X - LET’S END ON SOME (?) POSITIVES: Don’t read this book! Don’t do it! Don’t waste your time and money!
Instead, check out ANYTHING ELSE. If you want mom!Kara, read Tom Taylor’s ‘Last Daughters of Krypton’ in the DC Nuclear Winter special. If you want heroic oldlady!Kara, read Millennium. Honestly? Pick up anything by Bendis that has Supergirl in it. It is miles away better than this. You want angry Kara working through her grief? Andreyko, Red Lantern, even Infected. ANYTHING BUT THIS. HECK, grab Superman of Metropolis instead! That has bad Kara characterization but at least she doesn’t end up dead.
Anyways. This comic is bad. I wish it wasn’t! And this is now the SECOND TIME IN A ROW that Kara’s book ends on a terrible note before the character disappears from monthly comics for an unknown period of time.
*screams into the void again*
Lance Hunter - Should’ve Said It ft. Grant Ward
Based off Should’ve Said It by Camila Cabello
Word Count: 2,656
Show up at my door, but I don't live there anymore
Sendin' me your songs, but they don't really sound like before
I was crazy for you, all caught up and confused
Love was broken for me, now it's broken for you
Grant Ward. That was the name of the back-stabbing, hydra kiss-up dickhead that you once loved. But he betrayed you, all of you and you spent months getting over him and what he did to you. You had to learn how to love again, how to trust again and it wasn’t easy. Fortunately, you had help, Lance Hunter - a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit who you fell for very quickly.
You’d met him when he joined SHIELD after his friend was killed. You’d been drowning your sorrows about Ward when he walked past. You offered for him to join you and he couldn’t refuse – this event created a bond of friendship that grew stronger every day. A few weeks after you’d met you slept together. You didn’t exactly mean for it to happen but once it did, you were both happier – it forced you both to admit your feelings for each other and you’d been in a steady relationship ever since.
He’d been teaching you how to love again.
Isn't it something? That I get more when I'm giving you nothing? Huh
Isn't it magic? That when you stop lookin' for it, it happens?
Baby, he fell from grace, landed right in your place
Kissed me so many times that I forgot your taste
Lance had been so careful and gentle with you once you’d told him about Ward. Lance definitely wasn’t his biggest fan but he hated him even more when he found out how much he had hurt you. You’d also had trouble controlling your inhuman power – luck. You could change the luck of yourself and others at will, and you had full control except when you felt off which happened a lot after Ward’s betrayal. There’d been numerous accidents around you – people dropping things and falling over. Lance had helped you control it even when you felt off, he even called you his Lucky Lady.
You’d taken your relationship slowly and you were so happy with Lance, happy enough to forget Ward’s name – however, Coulson didn’t seem to get this particular memo.
“We're making a deal... with Ward.” He said, while you sat with Hunter and Fitz on a quinjet. As soon as the name left his lips, you felt your heartbeat quicken and fear filled your head. You instinctively reached for Lance’s hand.
“I’m sorry, what did you just say.” Lance asked, anger and disbelief rising in his words.
Coulson deactivated the black box, “As I said, desperate times, desperate measures.”
------------
A while later, Coulson was talking to Ward (accompanied by Mike Peterson) while you, Hunter and Fitz stayed at the quinjet. Hunter was trying his best to keep his cool and reassure Fitz while you sat alone, listening to Coulson and Ward’s conversation through coms.
“You doing okay, gorgeous?” Lance asked, sitting down next to you and resting his hand on yours.
You nodded your head, even though it was a lie. Coulson was bringing Ward back to the quinjet and you weren’t sure you were ready to see him. You hadn’t seen him since he broke your heart; you hadn’t visited him while he was living under the base.
Lance cleared his throat, gaining your full attention, “I know you’re lying, you’re terrified.” He said, putting his arm around you and pulling you into his chest. You rested your head down and took some deep breaths – trying to control your power and your brain all at once. “It’s okay to be scared, but I’m going to be here the whole time. I won’t leave your side.”
“Thank you.”
I wish that you could turn back the time
You hold me closer, instead of your pride
I knew it was you from the very first night
And it took you two years to make up your mind
You sat in the cockpit of the quinjet when you heard the car approaching. You knew that you were about to see him again and you didn’t know what to do with yourself. He had been the source of your trauma, your problems and you knew that Fitz felt exactly the same. He was sat next to you in the cockpit with Lance standing behind you watching the door.
You heard footsteps and moved out of your seat, coming face to face with Grant Ward. He smirked at you, “Hello, Y/N. It’s been a while. I’ve missed you.”
You couldn’t control what you did next. You took a deep breath out and launched at him, punching him square in the jaw. Lance pulled you away and wrapped you in his arms, whispering ‘I love you’ and ‘It’s okay’ in your ear over and over. Coulson directed Ward, Agent 33 and Bakshi, who they’d brought with them, to sit down as you did too. Fitz opted to sit in the cockpit with Mike, but you had the pleasure of sitting across from Ward.
You pulled your gun out of your pocket and loaded it, turning the safety off and pointing it right at Ward, “If you even blink, I will not hesitate to pull this trigger.”
“You’ve gotten stronger, more resilient. I’d like to think I had something to do with that, Y/N.” He smirked, trying to get to you.
You smirked back, “Yeah, actually, you made me realise that there are so many jackasses like you in the world, and I need to be my own superhero sometimes.” Ward was taken aback by your sudden confidence but Lance seemed very impressed.
Coulson explained the mission and soon enough you landed and the mission was a go. You helped Fitz get into Mike’s eye feed and stood by Lance to watch. Lance immediately held your hand, making sure you were as far away from Ward as possible. The meet went as it should up until Bakshi started to mention something about selling Mike and everyone turned against each other. Guns flew up and knives came out.
You held your gun up to Ward and closed your eyes; soon enough, Ward took a step forward and clumsily tripped on air, falling to the ground. You and Coulson held your guns to him while Lance held his gun to Agent 33’s head – ordering her to release Fitz or he’d shoot, which she did. Fitz disarmed Mike, who was about to shoot everyone in the room and everyone put their weapons down.
“You pull anything like that again; I'll throw your ass off this quinjet at 20,000 feet.” Coulson threatened.
You smiled, “And I’ll be the one opening the door.”
So you want me now? That's funny
'Cause you didn't give a, back then
Comin' back around, so sorry
'Cause there's no room in my bed and I'm all good now
Someone else is gettin' all of me
If you wanted me so desperately
You should've said it
The quinjet dropped down and Fitz pointed out Skye. You followed Hunter and Coulson holding your gun in one hand and stuffing a knife into your side pocket. Once you were in the building you were swarmed by guards. You stood behind Lance, closing your eyes and picturing the probability of the guards shooting each other, falling over and knocking each other out and you made it skyrocket. Once you opened your eyes, the seven guards who were attacking you were out cold.
Coulson gave an order and went to find Skye, Ward sneaking away to follow him. Unfortunately, you and Lance were too preoccupied with Ward’s actions to notice the guy behind you who shot before either of you could do anything. The bullet landed in Lance’s side and after assuring you that he was fine, he urged to you go and find Ward and stop him from doing more harm than good.
You caught up to them and were able to get the two guards they were fighting to knock each other out, before you grabbed your gun and whacked Ward in the face, causing a deep red cut to appear on his left cheek. “Hey!” He yelled, “I am trying to help you!”
“Yeah, like you did when you almost killed FitzSimmons, or when you hung me out to dry with Hydra! You are a lying jackass, who I never should’ve trusted!” You shouted, feeling better after getting your anger out.
“Skye!” Coulson called, pulling you out of your argument. Unfortunately, before you could run to hug her, two guys came out of nowhere and they teleported away.
“I had her, damn it, I had her.” Coulson muttered to himself, while you stood next to him.
Suddenly you heard a noise and turned around to be faced with the barrel of a gun but Ward shot the guy before he could hurt you. “If you’re looking for thanks, you’re not getting it.”
Lance and Agent 33 appeared and you immediately ran to him, “I shouldn’t have left you, I’m sorry.” You whispered, resting your hands on his cheeks.
“I was the one who insisted, and I’m fine.” He croaked, his wound was bleeding profusely and causing him to look more tired.
“You just need to stay awake, okay, babe? Stay awake.” You mumbled.
You're only lonely, now you ain't the one that hold me
Only lonely now, now
You sat next to Lance, pressing a cloth to his wound; he hissed every now and then at the contact but you would always fire back with a small quip to shut him up. Little did you know that Ward was watching you from the cockpit. He told himself that he loved Kara but that wasn’t true, he loved you. He missed you and he knew that he’d do anything to make you his – even killing Hunter.
“I don’t know how you can even be in the same room with him, much less work with him after what he did,” Lance said to you, as you dressed his wound.
You chuckled, “Well, I’ve already hit him twice; I plan on increasing that number.” You joked, finishing the dressing before looking up at him, “Plus, I’ve got you. You make everything easier.”
“Good, I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you too,” You whispered back before leaning in to kiss him.
Ward watched as you kissed Hunter like he was your everything, which he was. Ward began to feel extremely jealous; he was who you should be kissing. Him not Hunter. You should be with him. He convinced Kara to leave the cockpit and she went and sat by the computer screen.
“Y/N, can you come here a minute?” Ward called, interrupting your conversation with your boyfriend.
You sighed, “What do you need, asswipe?”
Ward chuckled at your blatant hatred and dropped his head slightly, “Can’t I just want to chat, clear some things up?”
Lance looked at you, “You don’t have to.”
“It’s okay,” You replied, “Fine.” You said, standing up and going to sit in the cockpit. You sighed deeply when you took in the view from the window, you’d never get used to it, the beauty of the sky. “What did you want to talk about?”
“You like the view? Because it’s too bad I never got to teach you how to fly like I said I would.” He said, so casually it was as if he forgot the last six months.
You kept your straight face, looking over at the controls and flicking one of the buttons, taking the stick from him and flying seamlessly, “May taught me. I guess I never needed you.”
“You’ve gotten more control over your powers; they’ve gotten stronger since I last saw you. You can control when you use them on other people now, back then you couldn’t even affect other people’s luck.” He explained, looking at you as you flew the jet.
“No thanks to you. Although, what you said earlier, that I’m stronger because of you – you aren’t wrong. All the trauma and pain, pushed me to work harder, get better so that one day I could wipe that stupid smirk off your face.” You threatened.
He chuckled, “And how could you do that? All you do is control luck.”
“Luck is a game of probabilities.” You started, turning to face him, looking him right in the eye, “And I hold all the cards.” You said through gritted teeth before you turned your attention back to the view.
“We could’ve been great together, Y/N. You just had to leave and start dating that guy.” He said disgust in his voice when he mentioned Hunter.
“That guy, is more of a man than you’ll ever be and I love him more than I ever loved you, so you can forget us ever being an us again. I’m way too good for you.” You spat, before moving back into a seat by Lance.
So you want me now? That's funny
'Cause you didn't give a, back then
Comin' back around, so sorry (hey)
'Cause there's no room in my bed and I'm all good now
Someone else is gettin' all of me
If you wanted me so desperately
You should've said it; you should've said it, love
The team had gotten back to the base, with Ward and Agent 33 and Lance had gone to medical to get checked out by Simmons who very quickly gave him the all clear with orders to rest. You had brought him back to your room and cuddled on the couch while watching some tv.
“I’m sorry Coulson brought Ward on the mission, if I knew he was going to do that I never would’ve suggested that you come.” Lance apologised, rubbing your arm with his thumb.
You smiled, “It’s okay, I’m sorry that you got shot because I was too distracted by my demons to focus on you and the mission.” You apologised back.
“It’s all good, but if you want to repay me for getting shot, could you get me a beer or two – to take the pain away?” He asked, sweetly. You smiled, nodding and told him you’d be back soon.
You headed towards the kitchens before coming face to face with Ward, you tried to turn around before he noticed you but he did. “Y/N, how’s your little boyfriend?” He asked, menacingly.
“Better, just grabbing him a beer and then I’ll be heading back, if you’ll excuse me.” You said, moving to get around him but he blocked your exit, “Come on, Ward.”
“I’m about to go on a very important mission and I think I need a little love to get me psyched up.” He manipulated.
You chuckled, “Not happening. Move.”
“Come on, princess.” He said, using a nickname you’d rather forget. “You know you miss me, just tell me those three little words.”
“Go fuck yourself.” You spat, moving to leave but he grabbed your arm. “Get off of me.”
“You don’t understand, baby…”
You cut off his words by kneeing him in the balls and punching him in the face, “No, you don’t understand, I hate you, with every cell in my body because you are a lying jackass who I wish I never met. I am in love with Lance Hunter, one of the best men I know and I would never do anything to sabotage that relationship – not like you did. And I know that it hurts you that someone else makes me happy, someone else gets to love me, and I’m happy that you feel that pain. So, leave me the hell alone because if I ever see your face again, I will make you beg for death.” You threatened before walking back to your boyfriend.
That was the last time you ever saw Grant Ward’s face.
Normally, Karamatsu was good at keeping his cool in situations that made him really nervous or scared. He would stay calm and collected, ready to take whatever it was on with everything he had and seize his moment to prove to himself that he was indeed the cool, brave, and overall flawless man he wanted to be.
This was not one of those times.
Karamatsu’s heart raced in his chest and his stomach was twisted in knots as he walked down the hallway towards his new therapist’s office. Although his body language stated the exact opposite, he was incredibly nervous. His relaxed posture and his puffed out chest hid that very well.
Why was he so scared? Everything that Chibita told him about therapy sounded like a dream come true. A place where you could talk to a trained professional about how you're feeling without fear of judgement along with them giving advice on how to improve your state of mind? That sure sounded like a great idea to Karamatsu. So why was he anxious? He had no reason to be.
Well...he did have one reason.
Karamatsu couldn't begin to describe the feeling that he had when he was given the name of his psychiatrist. It was like that sinking feeling that you get in your stomach when you realize something horrible, but worse. Not only was a family member going to be seeing him at his most vulnerable, but it was the family member that hated him the most. He was dreading their first session from the moment he found this out to when he was nearing Ichimatsu’s office door.
Before he knew it, Karamatsu was standing in front of the only thing separating him from more humiliation and self hatred, once again caused by one of his many brothers. He raised his fist up to knock on the door, but stopped.
Is this really something I should go through? No, maybe not. He thought. Maybe I should just go home and crawl back into bed. But I can’t just leave without an explanation! What am I going to do?
While Kara pondered whether or not he should knock, Ichimatsu made the decision for him by opening up the door as if he knew his brother was standing on the other side. He didn't seem at all phased by his brother being his client. He just looked at his clipboard and said a simple “Welcome. Come in.”
Karamatsu nodded and confidently made his way into the office, trying to put on his typical “cool guy” exterior. His brother’s workspace was extremely messy, with papers haphazardly stacked on his desk and books in a bookshelf that looked like they were just thrown in with little thought put into where they should go. Ichimatsu didn't seem to mind the mess though, and he looked like he knew where everything was. He sat down at his desk and silently stared at Karamatsu. He stared back, unsure of what to do.
Finally, Ichimatsu gestured to the couch across from his desk. “Have a seat.”
Karamatsu nodded again and sat down in the soft cushions, letting the awkward silence hang in the air and waiting for Ichimatsu to make the first move.
Ichimatsu looked over his notes again and shifted his gaze back to Kara. “So what brings you here?”
With that, the older man froze. He didn't want Ichi to know that him and his brothers were the cause of his lack of self esteem and self worth. He doubted that they'd even feel guilty if they knew. Plus, none of them knew him outside of his persona. He tried so hard to make that persona who he was, and admitting that he hated himself would just undo everything he's built up. He had to think of something to say quick!
Karamatsu put on his usual confident smirk and closed his eyes. “Heh...you see brother, a friend of mine suggested that I come here, and although I don't see why, I didn't want to disappoint them when they thought they were doing a good deed!”
“Karamatsu, you don't need to act like that while you're here. You can be honest with me. I won't judge you for anything that you say and I won't tell any of our brothers about what we talk about. Everything that happens in this room stays in this room. You don't even have to see me as your brother. Right now, I'm your therapist.”
Karamatsu, genuinely dumbfounded, blinked a couple of times at Ichimatsu. That was the first time in a long time that Ichimatsu showed any semblance of kindness to him, and although he wasn't about to complain, it just felt weird.
Ichimatsu spoke again. “I know that this is a bit awkward, but you can trust me with anything. I have a lot of clients who are going through the same thing that you are, you don't need to feel like you're alone on this. I'm a professional, I know how to help if you tell me what's bothering you.”
Karamatsu so badly wanted to trust his brother and tell him how he truly felt, but along with keeping up his image, his concern was about how Ichimatsu would feel if he knew the truth. If he knew that him and the others were the main cause of his lack of self worth, he'd..well, he'd…
Actually, Karamatsu didn't know how his brother would react if he knew. He hasn't seen him since the brothers went their separate ways to start their own lives and careers. What happened to Ichimatsu that made his attitude towards him do a complete turnaround? Was he just trying to be professional? If they ran into each other somewhere in public, would he go back to abusing him?
Ichimatsu spoke once again and interrupted Karamatsu’s train of thought. If he was scared of being vulnerable around him, then he was going to fight fire with fire.
“If it makes you feel any better, I also had to get therapy before I went to college. I was so scared of moving out and getting a job, mostly because of the stress of having to be around so many people at once. After living with Todomatsu for a little bit while he was trying to get his acting career off the ground, I decided that I wanted to do something productive, but I didn't know what. Plus, I doubted myself too much to do so. After I struggled with this conundrum for a while, I finally told Mom and Dad about this and about how I felt, and they did what was probably the best thing they've ever done for me: they got me a therapist.
Sure, it took me a while for me to open up with her since I didn't think that I needed it at first, but once I did, I noticed that I felt a lot better after our sessions. I was happier, more comfortable. She taught me so many things about my self worth and she helped me through so many issues that I struggled with for a long time. Even after I decided to go to college and major in psychology, she was there with me through every step of the way. I probably would've dropped out from stress had it not been for her. I'm really happy with my life now, and I wouldn't be here had it not been for Mom and Dad’s decision to sign me up for counseling. It's nothing to be ashamed of.”
The more Ichimatsu revealed about what he's been up to, the more Karamatsu’s expression softened. When they were still NEETs, Ichimatsu wouldn't be caught dead being this open about his feelings, and here he was, talking about his past struggles to the brother he used to hate the most without a hint of hesitation. He really has changed. Without noticing, Karamatsu's eyes began to water and his throat tightened. After watching Ichimatsu grow up into a cynical, cold loner and seeing that he's become someone like this, Karamatsu knew for sure that he could confide in him.
Noticing Kara’s tears, Ichimatsu leaned over his desk and handed him a box of tissues. “Here.”
After Karamatsu took the tissues and blinked away his tears, he slowly started to spill everything that he's felt over the years of living with his brothers. The loneliness, rejection, self hatred, desperation, trust issues, and to top it all off, the need to hide all of that out of fear of nobody caring. While it did hurt Ichimatsu to know that him and the rest of Karamatsu’s brothers were the main cause of these awful feelings, also knowing that his older brother trusted him enough to tell him all of this even after their less than great past made him feel really good. It brought him a sense of hope that Karamatsu’s relationships and sense of importance would improve greatly with some work and a bit of medication if needed. It was one of the many reasons that he loved being a therapist.
Karamatsu wrapped up his story and smiled at Ichimatsu. It was nothing like the confident grin that he usually wore. It was more soft and relieved, happy that he could finally talk about whatever he needed to in a secure safe space. It was almost cathartic.
With a glance at the cat themed clock on the wall, Ichimatsu turned back to his brother. “It's almost time to wrap up our session. Is there anything else you'd like to add before you leave?”
“Yes. I'd like to say that I could never be more proud of you, by brother. You've made so much progress in your career and mental image, so much so that you'd tell your story to someone that you hated. You've grown so much, fulfilled your dreams, and you've settled into a comfortable, happy life. I may still be trying to find my calling, but seeing you every week will help me in the long run so much, I know it. Thank you in advance for helping me, and thank you for finally being here for me.”
All Ichimatsu did in response was smile at his brother with his usual lidded gaze. “Thanks Karamatsu. It means a lot to hear that. I'll be seeing you again next week.”
The older brother made his way out of the doorway of the office after a goodbye, refreshed and smiling.
There were many more layers to Ichimatsu than he thought, and now that he knew that, he'd be less nervous about sharing the truth in their next session. Sure, he'd still be a bit reluctant since he wasn't used to actually addressing his issues, but at least he would know that he could be honest with him right off the bat next time.
It may not have seemed like it at first, but Ichimatsu couldn't have been better for his therapist.
dunno if youre still into sc but could you do more underworld au? I know it only had one chapter but we need more vampire lena!
this is the other more recent ask i got so here u go more vamp!lena since y’all like it Music: [Apart] AO3 link
[He waits for her to sympathize, But she won't sympathize at all, She waits all night to feel his kiss, But always wakes alone]
“Nightshift is all yours, Danvers. Have fun.” Leslie patted her shoulder as they passed in the hospital’s hallway.
Kara muttered thanks, before moving towards the doorway.
The room was considerably dark, enough to make Kara pause. She hated, the idea that Alex was right on some level.
“You’re just cursed to become as paranoid as I am, and Kara? I’m paranoid for a reason.”
Maybe she was too- well no. She was. Without a doubt. After the events of the day before? A train shoot-out? The sounds, the sights, the smells. She didn’t feel ridiculous for the way her breath held, and her eyes glanced around the locker room.
She was on the clock, a nurse during the night shift, but it felt odd- awful. To think about taking a step inside a place as dark as the eyes on the women that-
Her thoughts shifted to the woman, the one that had saved her, for a moment. She was oddly striking, and Kara felt as though she’d seen her before. In the way, you’d see someone in an odd dream, or maybe passing? Kara didn’t think she could forget her.
Suddenly, the sound of a door slamming caused her to jump backward, away from the cold darkness of the room. She held her breath, her eyes scanning hopelessly for whoever was there. For something, because sometimes not knowing was worse. Or, rather, more anxiety-inducing.
Just as sudden as the sound, Kara froze in fear as two very bright blue eyes suddenly opened. She could just barely make out the shape of the person, but the eyes- were stunning. Like an icy bright blue of a frozen lake that hurt to look at. She couldn’t look away, instead, as the figure moved around the room, Kara followed them.
“Lena.” The figure offered. It was feminine, with a slight Irish accent.
Kara blinked, offering a confused, “What?”
The figure didn’t reply immediately. Instead, there was a soft sigh, and the figure moved closer. Part of Kara’s brain told her to run, leave. Do something. To not be a sitting duck, like she was currently. Instead, she was frozen, still holding her breath.
Even as the figure approached the doorway, never stepping into the light, Kara couldn’t move.
Then, a single set of lights flickered on. Kara blinked as the woman that had saved her, the one she found her eyes drawn to, standing in front of her. Hand holding the doorway next to her, near the closest set of switches for the lights.
The woman looked from Kara to the lights and flicked the rest on. She blinked for a moment as if the lights hurt for a moment. As her eyes adjusted, she turned back to Kara, her bright eyes now a normal green. It was enough to make Kara blink. Had she imagined that?
“My name,” the woman let out a soft sigh again, “is Lena. You offered me yours, is it now impolite to offer the same back?”
Kara swallowing as Lena crossed her arms. An amused twinkle in her eyes.
Kara’s eyes dipped. She noticed- the leather, all of it, was gone. Lena’s corset, had been traded in for a baggy soft dark grey sweater, dark jeans, and- no shoes? There didn’t seem to be any gloves or weapons on her eyes. It still felt- like an odd choice to wear at a hospital.
“I’m Kara.” Was all she could imagine.
Lena rose an eyebrow, tilted her head, and shifted her weight so she was leaning against the doorway.
“I know.”
Kara took in a breath, letting it out slowly. She thought about begging for answers, to know what Lena was- but she didn’t really want those. Did she?
She was aware that she’d been targeted. The train- she wasn’t a genius, not like some of her friends, but she was smart. She’d been grabbed when she could have been shot. This- Lena had been there. The very real terrifying thought, that yes, this was all connected was there. She didn’t have the nerve to ask about how deep it all was.
So- she asked the only thing she truly wanted to know.
“Are you alright?” Lena blinked at her in shock, “I- I- I mean- uh- sorry. It was...a lot, and you could have gotten hurt? Do you need help is that why you’re here?”
Lena’s mouth parted slightly, and Kara saw a peak of fangs. Something she truly didn’t want to think about, but they were there. Reminding her, this is not normal, that none of this was normal- and that Lena could-
“Why do you care?” Lena finally asked, accusatory, “I could have been someone who tried to hurt you too.”
“You’re good at reading people, Kara. You just trust them too much.” Alex had told her before. “Anyone, including myself, could hurt you.”
Kara took a step forward, and out of reaction, Lena took one back. Her eyes shooting to Kara’s feet as she did, but Kara only stepped forward enough to break into the room and shut the door. Kara had only ever been really good at three things, in her life, to such an extreme they had faults.
Reading people. Trusting them. And telling the truth.
“I don’t think you wanted to, or want to, now.”
Lena huffed a laugh, “What?”
“You would have if you wanted to by now. We’re alone, and you could leave before anyone knew-”
And in the blink of an eye, Lena was in front of her, eyes glowing blue as she snarled- fangs showing, fistfuls of her jacket. Oddly, her eyes lacked conviction or true anger, so Kara relaxed just as quickly as she tensed.
Lena relaxed after a moment of searching her eyes for something. Probably fear, and Kara was afraid. She was terrified, but, not because of Lena. For whatever stupid reason, she wasn’t afraid of the woman in front of her. Lena’s fists relaxed until she was holding Kara’s jacket by her index and thumb, gently.
“You don’t see me as a monster, do you?” She asked softly.
Kara swallowed, and she didn’t.
She didn’t know why. Everything pointed to Lena not being right, not being human, being something more- but that didn’t mean monster did it?
“No.” She answered.
Lena’s lips parted again, and she leaned back, stepping away from Kara without a sound. As if she could make no sound. Her head dipped towards the floor, and her arms crossed as she paced back and forth quietly.
Like she couldn’t decide what she wanted to do. Like she was in conflict.
Kara wanted to help, but she didn’t know how to. She didn’t know Lena. Lena didn’t know her.
“You weren’t hurt, were you?” Lena finally asked, looking up at her.
Kara blinked, at the suddenness of the question. Maybe she cares? She shook her head slowly, and Lena’s brows dipped in disbelief.
“I’m okay! I promise!” Kara took a step forward, hands out in front of her to reassure Lena. “Just- just a little shaken still!”
Lena took a half step forward, before thinking about it. Instead, she let out a soft breath and nodded to herself. She unfolded her arms and let them fall beside her awkwardly.
“Good.”
“Why do you care?” Kara asked before she could stop herself, Lena looked at her confused, “You- asked why I did. Why do you care?”
Lena looked away for a long moment.
Kara let her stand there in silence. She did want to know.
“I don’t know,” Lena told her truthfully. “Something about you is-”
“Gravitating?” Kara finished for her. “I get that.”
Lena stared at her, impassively, and Kara worried for a moment that she’d crossed a boundary. That she’d guessed wrong.
It was weird. This entire thing was weird.
“I have to go.”
Kara blinked, “wait-”
And then Lena was gone.
Kara was left blinking into the suddenly empty room, and it was like there was no trace left of Lena there. Not even a trace of wind left, like- like she hadn’t even existed.
Kara considered, for a moment, that maybe she had made Lena up. A figment of her imagination, except- there was a single small piece of paper on one of the benches. She bent down to pick it up.
There was a number.
Kara felt the corner of her mouth tick upwards.
Maybe she does care.
--
Jack shifted, beside her in the car. His hands clutching the steering wheel as they maneuvered back towards the highway. She loathed the idea they’d have to make their way back to the manor. To Morgan Edge.
“Lena.” Jack spoke, and Lena could hear the concern in his voice, “You can’t do this again.”
I know, she thought to herself, watching as the hospital became smaller in the rearview mirror. I know I shouldn’t.
“We have been friends a very long time.”
She’d thought of all the ways to justify herself to Edge, to Lillian. To- to everyone who questioned her, and yet- she didn’t have a single lie to tell herself and Jack. To justify her interest.
The easiest was simply, “the Lycans want her, and we can’t have that.” But even that didn’t feel like the truth, despite how close it may have been originally to the truth.
Leaving her interaction with Kara, there were no answers to the questions she wanted to ask. She hadn’t asked a single one. Instead, there was only something simmering in her veins she didn’t entirely understand, and a fascination she knew was dangerous.
“You- I can’t do this again.”
“I know.” She told him, still staring in the rearview mirror.
She understood.
If anyone was to fall, to blame, it shouldn’t be him. It shouldn’t even be Kara. It should be herself.
It should always be her.
The hospital disappeared out of sight. Lena felt herself tense. She’d been relaxed since leaving Kara. She only hoped Kara’s interest was strong enough to call or text the number she’d left.
Part of her wasn’t entirely sure if she actually hoped that. Maybe Kara was smart enough to stay as far away as possible?
I hope she’s not foolish enough to give into this.
Give in to what?
Lena wasn’t sure.
To My Dearest Kara
Summary:
When she arrived, she was the only person who was currently there, or so she thinks. She was walking towards her cubicle when she saw a piece of paper that was neatly folded. Kara felt that it was important so she picked it up and caught a glimpse of her name inside the paper. Much to her curiosity and reporter instincts kicking in, she opened the letter and that's when where she read and re-read the letter, feeling her heart beating fast and warmth was spreading to her chest.
OR
Kara found an unfinished letter that was dedicated to her. The question that was bugging her was, from whom?
Chapter 1: The Letter
To my dearest Kara,
I have so much to say actually, but I guess I'll just keep this short and go straight to the point. I just want to say thank you for being such a good friend and for everything you've done for me. You are the most extraordinary person that I've ever met and meeting you is probably the best thing that's ever happened to me. And I just want to let you know that I'm hopelessly in love with you. I don't expect my feelings to be reciprocated so don't pressure yourself. I just merely want to get this out of my chest before it overwhelms me. You're the only one wh
Kara flipped the letter to the front and back. "Wha- This... This isn't finished!" She continued flipping it in every angle, hoping that there's a continuation somewhere only to find nothing of the sort. "Oh, come on. Really?"
That morning, Kara decided to be early at CatCo. "Wouldn't hurt to be an early bird once in a while." She muttered to herself. As soon as she was done fixing herself, she headed straight to the company.
When she arrived, she was the only person who was currently there, or so she thinks. She was walking towards her cubicle when she saw a piece of paper that was neatly folded. Kara felt that it was important so she picked it up and caught a glimpse of her name inside the paper. Much to her curiosity and reporter instincts kicking in, she opened the letter and that's when where she read and re-read the letter, feeling her heart beating fast and warmth was spreading to her chest.
Fishing her phone out of her pocket, she speed dialed the first person in her mind and was answered after a couple of rings.
"This better be good, Kara. I'm in the middle of something here." The person on the other line grumbled.
"Hey, Alex... You don't happen to have a forensic team, right?" Kara asked.
There was a moment of silence before Alex spoke. "Why? Did something happen? Are you hurt?"
"What? No! No, I'm perfectly fine." Kara reassured her sister.
"You're aware what the forensic team is for... right?" Alex doesn't sound convinced at Kara's reassurance.
"Maybe?" Kara slowly said.
Alex sighed. "Really, Kara? Anyway, what is it? Why did you call?"
"I got a letter." Kara answered.
"Huh... Good for you."
"A love letter, actually."
"O...kay?"
"The problem is, it isn't finished... yet. I just sort of found it on the floor just this morning here at CatCo."
"You're at work early?" Disbelief was evident in Alex's voice. "Who are you and what have you done to my sister?"
Kara frowned. "Ha ha. Very funny, Alex."
"So, let me get this straight." Kara heard Alex snort and muttered 'straight'. "You got an unfinished love letter..." She trailed off.
Kara nodded and kicked herself internally as she realized that her sister can't see her. "Yeah."
"And you want me to help you find out who wrote that?" Alex continued.
"Pretty much, yeah."
"Can't you just ask your colleagues?" Alex asked. "Especially the ones whom you're close to, like Winn or James or Snapper-"
Kara grimaced. "Alex!"
"... or Lena."
"Wait- what? Lena?" Kara was laughing nervously and she could feel the heat rising up her face. "Pfftt. Noooo. No way."
"I believe I mentioned four names."
"I mean, James and Winn could be possible. Snapper? Oh, hell to the no, that's for sure. But, Lena? Isn't that quite impossible?"
Don't ask me." Alex said, clearly amused. "You're the one who's spending time with her and you're the closest to her."
"Oh, no- Uhm... She... she doesn't see me like that, Alex." Kara tried to hide her disappointment. "Not that I see her like that, as well. I mean, I do like her but not like like her. We're just-"
"Friends. Sure." Alex interjected, cutting her sister's rambling. "Anyway, just ask them. Asking won't hurt, you know."
Kara rolled her eyes and huffed in exasperation. "Yeah, right. You think they'll admit it just like that? Like, hey Kara. Yes, I wrote taht letter. I'm in love with you."
"Fair point." Alex uttered. "Did you just roll your eyes at me?"
"Umm... No?" Kara lied, silently chastising herself for being so bad at it. She is such a bad liar.
"Are you telling me or asking me?" Alex asked. "'Cause I swear, I felt you rolling your eyes at me."
"You- What- You're creepy."
"I try."
Groaning, Kara leaned her head on her desk. "Alex, what am I gonna do?"
"How important is that letter?" Alex asked again.
"Very important." Kara answered without hesitation. "I don't know. It just made me feel... special? Not to mention loved... in a romantic way, I mean."
"I see." Alex was silent for a moment again that Kara had to look at her phone just to be sure that she's still on the line. "One more question.
"Fire away."
"Is the letter handwritten?"
This made Kara look at the letter again. "Uhh... Yes?"
"Then you probably know what to do." Alex said with a hint of satisfaction in her voice.
**
After a week long of hunting for the letter's author, Kara still found nothing. She's been checking everywhere and everyone. Even Winn. Well, everyone except James... and Lena.
Speaking of, she grabbed her phone and texted Lena.
Kara: Hey, Lee? Wanna grab lunch?
Drumming her fingers on her desk, she waited patiently for Lena's reply even though she wasn't sure if Lena was going to reply or not. It was already a week since she started hunting and it has also been a week that she hasn't seen Lena.
Kara was staring at her phone and after a few more minutes without any reply from Lena, she fired another quick text.
Kara: I miss you already, Lee. Call me or text me or anything when you're free. x
A few more agonizing minutes, her phone pinged and saw the name that she has been pining for from the past half an hour.
Lena: Sorry, love. Can't do lunch. I'm quite busy at the moment. Rain check?
Kara couldn't help the disappointment that she was feeling but she also can't help feeling giddy from Lena's endearment. It's normal to feel like this towards her best friend... right?
'Right. Who am I kidding?' She thought to herself.
Her phone pinged again and Kara swore her heart jumped as she read the message just like how her heart jumped when she was reading the letter.
Lena: I miss you, too. x
"Call me crazy, but I'm really starting to wish that Lena was the one that wrote this goddamn letter." She uttered to nobody and sighed. 'I'm falling for her, aren't I?'
**
A couple more days of snooping around (and having Snapper yap at her regarding to an article about God knows what), Kara found herself standing outside James' office.
“It's now or never." She murmured as she closed her eyes and raised her hand to knock on the door only to find her knuckle in contact with a forehead... Lena's forehead.
Kara's eyes widened in horror. "Oh, shoot! Lena, I'm so, so, sorry!"
"It's fine, Kara." Lena said while rubbing her forehead, thinking that apparently, opening the door abruptly isn't a good idea.
As much as Kara wanted to think about how much she missed her best friend's voice and presence, there is still something that currently matters the most. "Did it hurt? Of course, it hurt. Stupid me. I'm really sorry." Kara started rambling. "Oh my goodness. I should've been more careful."
Lena shook her head. "Kara."
"Should I grab some ice? We have ice here. Or maybe give you a massage? At the forehead, of course. Is there a forehead massage?"
"Kara."
"Maybe there's a forehead massage. Yeah. That's right. There has to be. There are lots of massages! Should I kiss it? Kisses makes anything feel better, right? Maybe I-" She stopped in the middle of her rambling as soon as she realized what she had just said.
Lena was almost as shocked as her. "What?"
"W-wha- what?"
Both women stood still, staring at each other, both shocked to even formulate words and not noticing James leaning on his desk, watching them both with amusement.
"Kara, I-"
"Lena, I-"
They both said at the same time and was followed by an awkward silence. Not wanting for the awkwardness to linger, Lena cleared her throat. "You can go first."
Shaking her head, Kara protested. "No, you can go first."
"Kara, please."
"But, Lena..." Kara whined.
James cleared his throat, causing both women to look at him. It was obvious that they had forgotten that he was still in the room. It was his office, after all, but he paid no mind to it. "As entertaining as this is, I believe you wanted something from me, Kara?"
Much to her disdain, not that she doesn't like James, Kara nodded. "Right... I did."
"I should go. I still have a lot to do at L-Corp. James. Kara." Lena uttered and was about to leave when Kara held her wrist. Kara made sure that it wasn't tight, but made sure that it was firm.
"Dinner. Tonight."
"Kara, you know I can't."
"You're always turning me down lately." Kara looked like a kicked puppy, looking at Lena with her big blue eyes and with a pout that no one can resist. Not even Alex. "I really do miss you, Lee..."
Lena's brows furrowed and Kara saw that she was contemplating whether to decline or upset. Hopefully, the latter.
"Look, it's not that I turn you down on purpose. I'm sorry for that." Lena started. "Its just that I really can't go out as of now."
Kara sensed that there was a but so she waited for Lena to continue and she did. "But, it would be nice if you bring Chinese later in my office, if that's okay with you. Maybe I could use a quick break."
Kara slowly grinned. "More than okay and totally fine with me. See you at 7?"
"7 it is, then." Lena kissed Kara's cheek. "See you later." With that said, Lena left her and James and went on her way.
Kara nodded even after Lena left and was absentmindedly stroking her cheek where Lena's lips landed just a few seconds, or maybe it was already minutes, ago.
"Hey. Earth to Kara."
Like snapping out of trance, Kara's attention was focused on James. "Sorry, what were you saying?"
James chuckled. "I asked if you were okay. You seem to be okay, apart from you looking like a tomato."
She was about to deny it, but she knew better not to. "That obvious?"
James smiled and nodded. "And as clear as a crystal. By the way, you came here. Why?"
"Right. Umm... You're the one who's writing on your planner, right?" Kara asked right away.
Yeah, I do." He answered.
"Can I-" Kara hesitated for awhile before steeling her resolve. "Can I see it?"
"Sure." James grabbed something just like a book, which Kara presumed that it was his planner, and offered it to Kara.
Mumbling a small thanks, she turned her attention on the planner and opened it. She froze as she looked- no, stared- at the neat penmanship that was scribbled on the planner which was identical to the penmanship of the letter's author. "Th-this..." Kara gulped.
"That's what?" James asked. concern lacing on his voice.
There has to be a mistake. "No..." She whispered under her breath. "This can't be."
James placed a hand on her shoulder. "Are you really okay, Kara?"
Her eyes shifted its focus, from the planner to James. "You wrote the letter?"
"You mean the unfinished letter."
"So, you did..." Kara was trying really hard to show a cheerful persona. "You did write the letter."
"That, I did." James confirmed.
"Oh... That's..." Kara swallowed the lump on her throat. "That's great!"
"You don't sound like you're genuinely happy."
"No! I am. I really am."
"Were you expecting someone else?"
"Well... I really don't know who or what to expect." Kara admitted. "It's not like I knew or had any idea who wrote it."
"But there is someone on your mind, isn't there?" James pried. "Or you're secretly hoping for a certain someone, aren't you?"
"What? Nooo..." Kara lied- denied, waving her hand dismissively. "Pshh. Who would that someone be anyway?"
"You're a bad liar, Kara." James called her out.
Kara knew that. She's not really the type of person who can lie to others face to face especially in front of her friends. "Okay, fine. I was hoping someone else. No offense."
"None taken. Mind if I ask who?"
Sighing, Kara looked down and played with the hem of her sweatshirt. "You might probably have an idea who."
James nodded. "I do, but I just want to be sure."
"It's..." Kara gulped. "I was hoping that it was Lena."
James was silent for a moment before he sighed. Kara took it as a disappointment from him. He wrote the letter and poured out his emotions for her but here she is. Sort of complaining that she was hoping for someone else and not him. She felt so ungrateful. "Look, James. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound ungrateful. I am touched, really. It's just that I-"
"You know what... Let's just cut the shit here, Kara." James cut her off.
Kara was now staring at James with wide eyes, unable to formulate words. She was shocked at hearing James cuss.
"Don't get me wrong. I'm not mad at you or anything." James reassured her. "Let me just say to hell with Lena killing me for this, but I don't want the two of you pining for each other with neither of you two making the first step."
Now, Kara was really confused. "What are you trying to say?"
"That planner..." James pointed at the planner that Kara was currently holding. "... isn't really mine."
"What do you mean not yours?"
"Kara, would you actually believe that that's my penmanship?" James asked incredulously.
"Yes?"
James shook his head. "It's too feminine to be mine."
"Feminine?" She tilted her head making James think of her like she was a golden retriever puppy. "I think it's just neat."
"Yes, it is neat but it also has a feminine touch." He pointed out.
"But, there are lots of guys who have these kind of penmanship. Some guys even have nicer penmanship than women." Kara justified. "That's why I'm calling it neat and not feminine."
James somewhat groaned in frustration towards the blonde. "My point is, that planner isn't mine and I didn't write the letter."
Kara realized what James is trying to tell her. "So, what you're saying is, a woman wrote the letter?"
"Been trying to tell you that for a few minutes now."
"Why?" Kara asked.
"Why what?" James asked back.
"Why lie in the first place?" Kara asked again. This time, she was frowning.
"Because Lena asked me to." He answered.
"Lena? As in, Lena Luthor?"
"Are there other Lena that you know?"
"Lena del Rey?"
"Kara, I'm pretty sure that it's Lana. Not Lena."
Kara huffed. "Now isn't the time to be sarcastic with me, Olsen."
James shrugged. "You started it."
"We're going way off topic now." Kara grumbled. "Anyway, what does Lena have to do with this?"
"The day you found the letter," James started to explain. "Lena found out that you had it and rushed in here, panicking-"
"Wait! Lena was here that day?" Kara interjected.
"Yes, she was, now let me finish." Kara pursed her lips and nodded, letting James continue. "She told me that the letter you currently have wasn't ready, yet."
"Clearly." Kara mumbled.
"What did I say about letting me finish?"
"Right." Kara smiled sheepishly. "Sorry. Won't happen again. Continue."
He looked at Kara skeptically before continuing. "She doesn't want you to know. Said she wasn't ready, yet, and she was afraid that if you found out that she was the one who wrote the letter, it will affect your relationship with her. Probably she was taking it in a bad way. Which is quite ridiculous if you ask me."
Kara was about to ask why but decided to just bite her tongue and let James continue. "Anyway, she came here and asked for my help. She knew that you will be snooping around and won't stop until you found who wrote the letter. She left her planner here and told me to give this to you saying that it's mine whenever you decided to show up here and ask me about it. She said that eventually you'll come here and she was right."
Kara was deep in thoughts. She was asking herself why would Lena think like that? It's not like she would just leave her because of a heartwarming letter. Okay, heartwarming to her and she's aware that Lena was oblivious to what she was feeling towards the said letter... or ever towards Lena, herself.
"Lena's in love with me..." Kara uttered quietly but enough for James to hear.
"I thought that was already obvious?" James walked back to his chair and sat down. "What with her opening up more to you than she did to others, both of you exchanging sweet words and being extra touchy and all to each other."
Kara's brow furrowed. "That's what friends do, right?"
James chuckled. "You're friends with Maggie but you don't exchange 'I love you's as often as you do with Lena and no, Alex doesn't count. It's understandable 'cause she's your sister. Lena only lets you get all touchy and clingy with her and you're only like that towards Lena. Heck, even us are friends but we don't do any of those." Offering a smile, he continued. "Admit it. You've already fallen for her before you have even realized it."
Realization dawned upon her making her gasp. "Holy cow. You're right. Oh my God. I thought I was just falling for her but now that I think about it... All that jealousy I felt when she told me about her ex, the urge to protect her from anything and everything, or the way my stomach was like having butterflies when she's laughing or smiling. It all makes sense now."
Still smiling, James looked at her and said, "Go get your girl."
Kara grinned. "You bet I will."
She dashed out of James' office feeling giddy and excited, but stopped at the doorway to turn around. "Oh, and James?"
"Yes, Kara?"
"Thank you." She beamed at him before completely stepping out of his office, feeling confident that everything will be going well.
Make Wise Choices Part 3
Doctor Sharpe
You can feel yourself being held by strong arms and your face being placed in an odd angle. Someone is touching your mouth and your cheeks. You can feel liquid filling your mouth, no not liquid blood and tugging inside your cheeks. A few moments later you begin to hear voices, several voices in fact. You can recognize your sister’s voices and Lena’s but there is one you most definitely do not know who it belongs to. Its quite soothing though and because you don’t feel pain, you take that as a major win for now. Then you seem to notice the tugging and hands on your face continue to prod and touch inside your mouth and now you are intrigued to know what’s is going on.
You try to open your eyes but there’s a bright light directly assaulting your eyes, you first instinct is to hiss and close your eyes again but you find impossible to move your jaw to perform such action and in response the person manhandling your mouth tenses their hold to make sure you don’t move your jaw and the pressure grows stronger this time. The hands touching your jaw are strong and cool soft. You don’t feel scare and you wonder who the person might be.
By now everyone in your proximity notice you began to regain consciousness and now the voices are directed at you.
Alex: “Hold still little one, Doctor Sharpe is here, and she needs to look at your incisions and assess the damage. Please don’t be scare its just us and Doctor Sharpe” says in a very calm and reassuring voice.
Doctor Sharpe? You mentally ask yourself; you don’t know anyone named Sharpe and you know your dentist name is Richards.
Kara: “Shhh little one, we got you. Doctor Sharpe is a friend of Lena and she was super nice to come here and check on you. She is a dentist by the way, so don’t think we would just let anyone just prod and touch your mouth. Lena called her once you passed out, we were worry for you and I mean is not like I don’t appreciate your being here Dr. Sharpe but…”
Lena: “Kara, Love please calm down. Take a deep breath, you are rambling, and you are going to make y/n nervous” -Lena puts a reassuring hand on Kara’s shoulder and that makes the blonde stop and relax.
Kara: “sorry…”
You open your eyes once again, this time you are prepared for the assault of bright light and squint your eyes and can barely distinguish 3 figures standing in front of you, one of them holding your face.
Alex rolls her eyes at her sister “Kara tends to ramble a lot when she is anxious, but honestly thank you for coming so quickly to check on our sister. We really appreciate it” – Alex says with a small but grateful smile aimed to the doctor.
Dr Sharpe: “don’t be, it’s fine” the mysterious person says chuckling a little at Kara’s fluster rambling. The doctor removes her hands from your face and all of the sudden the blinding light is gone - “Honestly it’s okay, don’t worry, I’m used to worried parents and relatives doting over my patients. Its perfectly normal to worry about your love ones, especially when they are as cute as your sister right here”
Y/N: “Wow that voice. Pretty voice. I like it …Hooot” In your drugged out state of mind you think you’re having an inner monologue but you actually voiced those words out loud and you are thankful for the mouth piece you have stuffed next to your cheek and that the words come up a bit sluggish. Still you know everyone understood because you can hear different kinds of snickering coming from the women in the room.
Y/N: “nghhh…”
Dr. Sharpe: chuckles- “Well thank you honey, that is very sweet of you to say. But please try not to speak or move your jaw just yet”
That voice again, you really like that voice and you are finally able to see her face and the owner of that voice. You are mesmerized by the eyes looking straight at you, like she is looking into your very soul. The most astonishing blue eyes you have ever seen in your life. And that face, blonde soft waves and kind face. And in that moment, you are so grateful for the fever and swollen cheeks, otherwise you would be bright red with embarrassment and wouldn’t be able to hide it.
Lena: “Actually Cassandra is not a dentist, she is actually an amazing Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a good friend of mine” Lena says smiling at the doctor and both your sisters look quite impressed and a bit embarrassed for calling her a dentist without knowing exactly what her expertise or field was.
Dr. Sharpe: blushing a little – “You are very kind Lena. But don’t worry, dentistry specialties are not commonly known. But let’s get back to the most pressing matter at hand” – the woman switches back to her professional persona and imposing presence. “Y/N I need to ask you a few questions, I’m going to hold your hand and please press my hand once for YES and twice for NO, we are going to let the muscles in your mouth rest for a bit. Are you comfortable doing this? – you press her hand once to let her know you are okay with it.
Alex- laughs a little and there’s a smirk on her face – “Oh wow, that’s a great and polite way tell someone to shut it, good one doc. I wish I had used that one sooner on this one” -Alex points at you while Kara and Lena give Alex a disapproval look while you look at the doctor with teary eyes.
Kara: “Alex! don’t mock y/n. she feels bad enough and you are not helping”
Lena: “don’t be mean Alex”
You know its all good and there’s not bite behind the words. You just feel bad because you just remembered why you end up in your current predicament. By being stubborn and a brat. You feel bad for worrying your sisters and Lena and all you want to do is to apologize. But you can’t, because you were told not to speak which makes you tear up in frustration at not being able to communicate properly.
But Alex being the wonderful sister she is, she knows without you being able to say anything she just looks at your eyes and just knows what’s wrong.
Alex: “Kara come on, you know I’m just joking. I could never be mean to her. she is not crying because of that tough.” – Alex comes to sit next to you and holds your other hand – “ y/n don’t cry, I know okay? I know you are sorry, and I know you are just frustrated for not being able to speak at the moment. Please sweetie no, please don’t cry. Just listen to the doctor and we will speak later okay? – you nod at her and she tenderly brushes a few stray tears from your face. She stands to let the doctor continue with her examination.
Meanwhile Doctor Sharpe is looking at the interaction between the women and she smiles at the warm and caring dynamic among you all. She is quite intrigue about how soft Lena is with them and more importantly she was becoming quite smitten by you, you had that power over people. You didn’t have to do much, you y/n Danvers had something that automatically draws people in and your eyes are so expressive and innocent that the good doctor can’t fight the urge to look at them and feel something she wasn’t expecting nor she had felt in a very very long time. She is taken out of her reverie when she hears Alex mentioning the examination she was supposed to be doing right about now.
Dr. Sharpe: “Riiight, yes sorry. Ok so here we go. From what I was told by Lena and your sisters the pain your experienced was bad enough to knock you out. y/n while you were unconscious, I injected you with a very strong pain medication. You should not be able to have much sensation inside your mouth, but let me ask and without traying to move or prod with your tongue, do you feel any sort of pain in your mouth?
You take a moment to take inventory of your current condition and you cannot feel any sort of pain in your mouth nor anything similar to the pain you felt by stumping your foot during your temper tantrum thrown at your big sister. You press her hand twice, saying NO, you don’t feel pain.
Dr. Sharpe: “Good, that’s good. You will experience lack of sensation for a couple of hours. Like I said it’s a strong pain reliever with a numbing agent, I gave you the best drugs available” – she winks at you. “But once that wears off you will feel very uncomfortable for at least the next 48 hours. Basically, strenuous activity can cause pressure to build up and complicate things like heavy bleeding and rupture of your stiches and of course can be extremely painful. Which unfortunately was your case. Because you haven’t developed the blood clot inside the tooth cavity, you are not suffering from what Is called dry socket, and that is not fun let me tell. It’s quite painful.”
Your eyes were comically wide in both surprise and fear.
Dr. Sharpe: “ Ok let me explain that better. Nothing to be scare about. Think about it like a lake. Yes, like a lake or a pond. After a tooth extraction, blood fills the site where the tooth was. Blood is what allows the body to heal. Just like a lake needs to be filled with water, a tooth extraction needs blood to heal. What happens during a dry socket is that the blood washes away and the site dries out too soon. When the blood clot is lost, the site lacks the blood cells and nutrients needed for healing. A dry socket is like a lake in a drought. The lake has dried up.”
You like her voice and how soothing it is. Even tough what she is saying sounds painful and scary. Your sisters and Lena are paying rapt attention to what the blonde doctor is saying.
Dr. Sharpe: “Ok so in your case you were lucky it was just the stitches, but painful, nonetheless. Dry sockets are a very common complication and can cause the healing time to extend. You did cause damage to the tissue surrounding the incision and I was not able to use stitches to close the gap without risking nerve damage. I use aviente, that is a microfibrillar collagen to help you absorb the blood to reduce the bleeding and accelerate the clot formation. I know this is a lot of information and maybe you can feel a little out of sorts due to the pain medication, but I like to explain everything to my patients.”
You could listen to her voice for hours and being explain anything she wanted to you because you liked her voice very much. You were also sporting a goofy smile towards the blue-eyed doctor while your sisters and Lena took into everything the doctor was saying.
The doctor gave you a warm smile and explained more about your condition to your sisters and Lena, making them feel much calmer now that you were okay and being tended by a very competent specialist. After the incident with your childish tantrum you learnt that Alex was about to leave to get your meds when Lena remembered her friend being back in town and she was an expert in all things dental according to Kara’s explanation. She called Cassandra Sharpe right away and her friend was able to drop everything to help her and be there for you because she knew Lena Luthor would never just call and ask for a favor in such urgent way and that only meant that you were someone very important and dear to Lena. You may be high as a kite right now and drooling like a fool, for obvious reasons, now but you certainly weren’t blind to appreciate how beautiful Cassandra Sharpe truly was. You were taken out of your daydreaming once again by the voice you could become addicted very soon.
Dr. Sharpe: “You need to be very careful Y/N, the next 8 to 12 days you need to follow the indications to a T. No hard or crunchy food, no smoking, no alcohol, no caffeine and avoid excessively greasy foods those can irritate and create infections in the tooth cavity. I noticed the drinking bottles Lena got you, those are great, please don’t let her use any kind of straws or bottles that requires suction those are a very hard no, they can easily dislodge the blood clot and that is what we are trying to prevent from happening at all cost. From what I can tell your pain tolerance is almost nonexistent and that would only create a horrible painful experience for you. Taking into consideration what I read and heard from Alex about your medical history, you can have complications due to the poor capacity for your blood to clot. The aid I use is designed to help create the clot but that takes time and you will have literally two open blood oozing wounds inside your mouth. I’m leaving a list and indications of everything you need to know, I’m getting you guys my direct line so if you have any questions or concerns you can call me right away or Lena can get ahold of me. But in the case, she is busy you can easily reach out to me. Y/N You can’t do any kind of exercise, heavy lifting, no strenuous activities even too much walking can be harmful. Try to relax and chill on the couch or your bed for the next 48 hours”
You knew your helicopter sisters and super protective Lena wouldn’t let you lift a finger in the near future. You sighed and nodded to the whole speech. You honestly felt like crap for putting your loved ones in this position, just for being stubborn and you were is no rush to be in that kind of pain again, you were going to avoid it at all cost. Besides you liked to see the bright side of things and meeting the gorgeous blonde doctor was something bright alright. Something about her was drawing you like a mot to a flame.
Alex, Kara and Lena were taking on everything Dr. Sharpe was saying like their lives depended on the words being spoken by the blonde woman.
Alex: “We will make sure she follows all your indications, and if I have any questions, I will call you right away. Thank you so much for all your help Doctor Sharpe, I cannot express how thankful we all are you were able to make a house call at such hour and leave all the important activities you probably had to put on hold”
Dr. Sharpe: “nonsenses, what are friend for right? I mean I love Lena like a sister, and she is one of my closest friends. I’ve heard a lot of stories about the wonderful Danvers sisters and I wish we could have met under better circumstances. But work and life kept me from National City and my favorite Luthor over here” She looks to where Lena standing close to Kara and gives her a very honest and tender smile. “I recently moved to National City looking for a less hectic and strenuous life, I love my job and being able to help and learn more about my field of expertise. But you know, there’s a time in your life where you need to stop and think of what you really want and need. I’m not in my 20s anymore and I needed a change. The need to settle down and have more time for me. I also missed Lee so very much, she’s been my family for a very long time, and it’s been years since we could be together in the same city for more than 2 days at the time. I just missed this amazing woman so much I just knew that if I wanted a fresh start and a place to call home it had to be wherever this amazing soul named Lena Luthor would be”
Lena started to tear up at the heartfelt words coming from the doctor, and you could sense Dr. Sharpe was a force to be reckon with and she was definitely someone very special and that she loved Lena fiercely. Wish only increased your need to know more about the blonde woman.
Lena: “Cassie why are you always trying to make me cry you beautiful idiot amazing woman. I have a reputation to uphold you know?” Lena teased and came to where the blonde woman was sitting at the coffee table in front of you and Kara. She gave the blonde a hug and whispered something in her ear that you couldn’t catch. But you saw Dr. Sharpe tear up a bit and nod against Lena’s shoulder. Suddenly you wanted to move Lena away and hold the blonde blue- eyed woman yourself. Ooookay possessive much? Damn those pain meds are really doing a number on you, what the hell? You mentally asked yourself while trying to sit up a bit since you been in a weird angle for a long time on top of Kara. You could swear you heard the words ´I love you too´ being whispered back from the blonde to Lena. You frowned.
This made the women turn in your direction, Kara helped you to sit with your back to her front while Alex kept looking at the exchange between Lena and the doctor and then at you with a smirk on her face.
Dr. Sharpe: “Okay well I guess that was a lot coming from someone you just met” she gives a nervous laugh while discretely removing a tear from her eye and continue with your examination. “And after that mushy festival, I would like to ask you y/n to really take it easy. Drink a lot of fluids and try to eat the food I listed in the sheet I gave your sisters. I will email you a more detailed list so you can have it at hand. I know it sucks no being able to eat many things but trust me y/s, I made sure to list a very good and delicious options, I swear to God and all the deities in heaven that I don’t eat rabbit food like Lena. I actually love food and I always try to make things easy for my patients. I mean they are already in pain and miserable so why make them suffer even more? I don’t like to see any of my patients in pain, that’s one of my main goals, that and to help them have a fast recovery period so they can go back to their normal lives in no time”
Kara: “wow you are a very impressive and dedicated doctor. Thank Rao Lena only has eyes for me, and we trust each other very much otherwise I would feel very intimated by you Doctor Sharpe.” Kara joked and laughs when Lena tries to slap Kara’s arm while still sporting a beaming smile at her girlfriend antics and having all her favorite ladies in the same room.
Dr. Sharpe: “Rao? As in the mythological Indian king?” – asked the blonde quite intrigued.
Everyone froze at that and Kara just giggled and said- “it’s just an expression from where I’m from but anyhoooow…what’s the verdict doctor?” – trying to change the course of the talk back to y/n.
Dr. Sharpe: “Oh, I see. That’s cool. Well Miss Y/N here needs complete and total rest for at least the next 48 hours. I would like to check on your incisions tomorrow just to make sure there’s no sign of nerve damage nor infection. And to try to gauge your pain tolerance while being out of the hard stuff and make sure you get the best option in time and avoid you experiencing any unnecessary pain. The first couple of days are the tricky ones. Reason why if you all are comfortable with, I would like to be your primary dental specialist, I’m not trying to impose or say that your current doctor is inadequate. The surgery was done perfectly. However, my concern comes from the post op care indications and the pain meds you were prescribed. Due to your medical history, the level of pain you experience today was very extreme, you doctor should have been aware of certain details to avoid searing pain based on your records. I’m sure he or she is a very competent doctor, however there are cases where the patient needs a more specialized professional, not to brag, but I am one of those professionals”. – she jokes while pointing a finger to herself.
Dr. Sharpe: “Besides any friends of Lena are friends of mine and I would hate for such a lovely girl like y/n to suffer unnecessary pain if avoidable” - her smile is kind and sincere.
You smile at the goofy doctor while being in awe of the amazing woman she is.
Lena: “Honestly Cassie you are so very humble I’m amazed you head still within the same space of your body and not floating around the streets ” – she says sarcastically with no bite behind her words, just friendly banter among close friends. “In all seriousness thank you so much for everything, I wanted to referred y/n to you as her first option, but you were so busy with the move and seminars that I never thought of asking. And her current doctor is an amazing professional as well, just not as immerse as you are in the studies of nerve damage caused by maxillofacial surgery. Nor the involvement in recent studies of sensory intervention to the face, and the you are pretty much involved in all the branches in mandibular nerve injuries”
Alex: “Absolutely, you seem to know more about what y/n needs right now and we would love for you to continue as her primary periodontist. And we have complete faith in what Lena says, to impress Lena Luthor is not an easy thing to accomplish and she speaks very highly of you. And like you said, a friend of Lena is a friend of ours as well”
Dr. Sharpe: “Perfect, that’s settles it then” – the blonde woman gives a brilliant smile to the women in front of her.
The Danvers sisters were beyond impress, if you could actually move your jaw, it would probably be hanging low near the floor at the amount of words coming out of Lena because, you were smart but that sounds like doctor Sharpe was some sort eminence in dental care. Can this woman be any more perfect?
Lena seems to be super proud of her friend and the way she talks about her work, you know Lena is beyond intelligent and crazy smart, but her friend is looking like a masterpiece created by the Gods themselves. Yes, the drugs she gave you are doing a number on you indeed.
The blonde doctor turns bright red at the words Lena just said and you think is the most wonderful thing to witness. You are in so much trouble.
You began to feel like all energy was leaving your body, you wanted to keep listening to Dr. Sharpe speak but you felt a heaviness take over your body and you still had something odd inside your mouth and all you wanted at the moment was to sleep. You tried to find a better spot within your sister arms and you brought a fist to your eye a clear sign that you were sleepy and about to get fussy.
Kara: “Someone is getting fussy over here. Dr. Sharpe are you all done, or you need her awake for a bit longer?” -Kara asked while traying to cradle you in a way you felt more comfortable.
Dr. Sharpe: “Oh my, I’m so sorry we kept talking and time got away from us. Yes, just hold her head like before and I will remove the mouth peace and apply the antiseptic and anesthetic gel really quick”
Doctor Sharpe was very quick to clean her hands and put on a new pair of latex gloves and very gently you felt your mouth being held again by those soft hands, and nimble fingers remove something spongy feeling that was placed inside your mouth. Then you saw when she grabbed something from a bag you haven’t noticed before and continue to properly finish wherever she was doing at the moment, finally you felt a sort of cold liquid and that was it.
Dr. Sharpe: “Ok all done. Sorry I got distracted for a moment. But you are all set y/n. You can now try to talk if you want but avoid making too much facial movements or prod the gaps with your tongue. I know is tempting, because you may feel a funny sensation around the tissue or just of out curiosity, please don’t do it. Rinse the extraction site with warm salt water 2 times a day for 1 week beginning tomorrow afternoon. Don’t let her take any of the medications on an empty stomach. If for any reason you experience discomfort or any problems, do not hesitate to call Okay?”
Y/N: “Thank you” – you replied very quietly and with a timid voice. Your sisters and Lena found that odd as you are always a ball of sunshine and not really shy. But then you had to do it, because of course you would…
Y/N: “So that means no corn dogs, right?”- you sheepishly asked.
Dr. Sharpe laughs a little – “No, sorry honey. You can’t eat those right now”
Kara and Lena just hide their smirks at the cheeky comment and Alex being the more mature of you all just gives you a look and you know you need to stop right now.
Alex: “Very well, you heard that y/n? no corn dogs and stick to what Dr. Sharpe is saying. You don’t want to be in pain and you will have tasty food options. So, shush you menace”
You sigh in relief that your sister is not really mad, and you honestly don’t want to prolong the time you need for recovery by doing something stupid, again.
Kara: “Okaay on that note, I’m taking this one to her room and tuck her in. Dr. Sharpe you should totally come to our games night, there’s wine, beer, food lots and lots of food and obviously games. We’re not sure when the next one will be though, until y/n right here feels better that’s for sure. But again, thank so much for all you’ve done tonight”
Alex: “Yes, I’ll be there in a moment, I will stay with her tonight. She tends to move in her sleep, like A LOT and I don’t want her hitting her face or putting to much pressure on her cheeks by lying on her side or stomach. If she is being held, she stays still”
Y/N: “No I don’t, Alex don’t say that” – you’re mortified by what your sister just said in front of the hot doctor and you want to hide your embarrassment.
Kara just snorts and Lena shakes her head. However, the blonde doctor seems to be pretty amused by that statement and looks at you with something you can’t quite decipher, she doesn’t look disgusted or mad. Her eyes seem to shine even brighter at that, and a smile so warm directed at you that you feel butterflies in your stomach. You are in so much trouble.
Dr. Sharpe: “You are just the cutest y/n. I think I’m going to have a blast getting to know you all now that I’m in National City. Now Alex, I think that’s a wise choice. An ice pack should be applied to the face as soon as possible, hold it for 20 minutes and then removed it for 20 more. Do it for a few hours, it will help minimize swelling”
Alex: “Of course, we have several ice packs ready. Thank you again for everything and it sure is a pleasure to meet you Doctor Sharpe I hope you can come to our game night; they are pretty fun and stress relivers. You can text us what time is best for y/n check up tomorrow or if you think it’s better for us to take her to your office…”
Dr. Sharpe: “Please, call me Cassandra Dr. Sharpe is way to formal and I would love to join you, just let me know what I need to bring and the time and date. About tomorrow, just call me whenever y/n is awake, and I can come to check on her pain level and make sure the clots are forming. It’s better for her to stay home so I think it’s easier for me to just stop by.”
Lena was looking at the exchange with curiosity, she seems to notice how her doctor friend was being towards y/n, she knew her well and her eyes never sparkle like that. At least not just at anyone and she hasn’t seen that look in a very long time. It was a good luck on her, however Lena was very protective of y/n, so she was going to have a nice long chat with her doctor friend very soon.
y/n was fading fast, so Kara just said a quick goodbye to the blonde doctor and walk out of the room with y/n in her arms while saying something about lunch or food. You weren’t quite sure.
Y/N: “Byeeeee doctor pretty eyes” – you said with a goofy smile and obviously losing all sense of shame and inhibition the sleepier you got. You gave a cute wave and you let yourself being carried away to your room.
The blonde doctor just gave you a big smile and waved back at you.
Dr. Sharpe: “See you tomorrow cutie, sleep tight”
Yes, things were about to get very interesting soon.
Next Part 4: dry sockets...
Note: I don't know how or when it happened. The story took a twist without me actually knowing. somehow while thinking about this 3rd part i just kept seeing these scenes playing on my mind and my fingers just kept typing. I just realized how much i written and i was shocked to see it was at least twice the amount of words from the two previous parts. Let me know what you think, I never imagined this story to become so long. But bear with me, this is the first time I have written anything like this and i guess i still need to control my thoughts. Still i kept the same idea of baby Danvers being her silly cute and adorable self while being taken care and dot over her sisters and Lena. I just added something extra that I hope you'd enjoy. Please let me know what you think. I made this fluffier to compensate from the angst on Part 2, However don't think the pain is over (I laugh evilly and I slowly walk away)
------------------------------------------------------------------
I was back alone in that cell with nothing to do and the only thing I could do right now was to stay sit in that bed, having my eyes looking at the security camera and then looking around, observing the whole emptiness of my cell : an bed, an simple sink, an toilet out of the camera sight and that was it, nothing else. Not even an window was there, this place was surely going to make full crazy, been surrounded by 4 concrete walls and doing nothing while someone is watching me through an camera, I was locked down and I wasn't able to do an thing.
On me, I lost everything that could have help me to know what time is it, knowing only that one day has passed since we were captured. They took away my watch and without any window to take an look outside, it was sure that I will lost the sense of time, not even able to know which hour is it. This place is going to freak me out, I need to stay strong, Bell needs to be acting more even if it's going to be long. I need to stay more strong than before, they maybe want me to suffer but I will try to resist if I can.
As I was lamenting myself about my state, lying down in my bed, the door was making some noises, meaning that someone was opening it to enter my cell, getting my attention and when the door opened, I could see Freya herself, holding an plate in her hands, entering the cell. She was looking strangely good to me...too good to be true.
"What do you want ?" I asked her directly, moving on my bed to sit on the edge of it as she was walking to get in front of me.
"It's time to eat, Bell." She replied in an low voice, handing over the plate and discovering some sweets on it.
"Which time is it ?" I demanded too as I wanted to know about it even if it was maybe minimal for me.
"Almost the evening, come on, eat." She answered, putting the plate on the ground before taking an particular sweets on it to give it to me. "Those were your favorites, Kara-Koum." She explained as I was looking at the sweet.
"Why are you like this ?" I questioned her in an curious tone. "Why I am an important person to you ?" I added, pulling aside her hand.
"Bell..." She breathed in an painful desesperation, looking down but not even removing the sweet from her hand. "I hate to call you like that but I have no choices."
"But, that's my name, remember ?" I made her recall of that, remembering the calls I had with her. "You didn't forget that, didn't you ?" I continued, deciding to get back on lying down on the bed, looking at the ceilling, hands on my chest.
"We are trying to help you." Freya said, getting herself sit on the edge of my bed, next to my legs. "Please, let us help you."
"By locking me down ? By avoiding me to see my friend ? By maybe torturing me ?" I told her in an clear and dark voice, refuting the help she want to propose. "You all have an strange behavior in your group !" I rolled my eyes, even releasing an little silent laugh from my mouth.
"Listen..." She put her hand on my legs and for an first, I wasn't going to rebuke her at all, preferring to stay focused on watching the ceilling. "It's maybe unorthodox but helping you means that we can't allow you to roaming the place like that." She explained.
"I'm an prisoner, nothing important." I whispered, putting my eyes on her face.
"You're important to my eyes, Y-...Bell." She claimed, almost saying my name and her voice, she was sounding to mean it.
"That's why you kissed me on that plane ?" I asked her and her reaction was to look at the camera in shame.
"I knew that they were something wrong at the moment I saw you, that you weren't you." She revealed, thinking about the pain she had the moments after she saw me after these years.
"You almost killed me, you know that ?" I raised my voice, slowly redressing myself to have an better look on her. "My throat took days to recover but that's because we're enemies that you hit me." I added.
"You weren't yourself." She repeated to me, moving her hands to touch my face. "Yiri..." She silently said, feeling her fingers along my skin but instead of staying without moving, I looked away and got my back on the bed again, now facing the wall.
"Go, I want to be alone." I ordered her.
"You didn't even eat." She protested, hearing her taking the plate in her hands.
"I'm not hungry." I don't know why but I lied to her, sensing something wrong in those sweets. "Go now." I repeated again.
"We're helping you, be sure of it." She proclaimed as I heard her put the plate back on the ground. "I'm leaving them in case." She told me before she got up from my bed and then, walking away from it before I could hear the door getting closed, meaning that I was alone....again....
I quickly peaked my head to see if she was really gone, discovering the sweets plate next to my bed and looking back at the camera for an second before I faced the wall again, hiding my face from the camera as tears start to fall from my eyes, feeling the pain to play 'Bell' in here but....I've been playing it since the moment I stepped inside that base. Those tears were reals, it wasn't Bell at all, it was me....I need to stay strong....
As I closed my eyes to have some sleep in here, taking care to not hurt my wounded left arm on the bed, I was thinking of an lot of things before suddenly, I got myself transported....back on that hill....at Solovetsky....wearing my actual outfit. Is this some kind of an dream or an nightmare I'm living right now. I looked around me to discover behind me....myself & Adler himself, holding each other at gunpoint.
It seems that I was like an spectator, seeing that I wasn't even spotted by him & myself...what is happening ?....Then, two gunshots were done : one by me and one by Adler but at the moment the two bullets went to fly in their respectives directions, the world was suddenly like stopped by itself, watching the two detonations of our guns. No more sound, it was like the world stopped at the moment the bullets start to fly.
Then, as I was watching where my bullet that I shot was trying to go, me...myself moved from her position, acknowledging that I was here, no longer an spectator and putting an scare in me.
"You want to know where we hit him right ?" Myself....Bell said to me, getting her own M1911 back in her holstler.
"Uhm...." I was an bit shocked almost falling on my behind on the ground at watching myself....talking to me. "Is...I'm going crazy for sure." I affirmed, looking at my hands.
"We're all going crazy one day." Bell stated as she moved to face the sea and me, stunned and mostly shocked. "I don't know how to feel about that place, what about you ?" She asked me like if she was unaware of everything.
"You just saw it, Adler was going to kill me....us." I corrected myself, wondering if I really had to, she is me and I am her.
"I know but what do you think of here, without thinking of him ?" She repeated again, clarifying her words as I was trying to get myself back to normal.
"I don't know." I replied honestly, slowly moving to get next to Bell. "This place is...calm...peaceful...I don't know." I added, deciding to sit on the edge of the cliff.
"He thought that it would make an good place for us to go away." She suggested, sitting next to me too, watching how I was 3 years ago, an non-existant scar. "He never thought at any second that we wanted to live." She continued, taking an deep breath.
"He took us our chances to have maybe an normal life." I exclaimed, finding it now normal to talk with myself from 3 years ago...Bell.
"Yes." She changed my words, causing me to look at her with curious eyes. "He did succeeded however, he just killed one person here." She breathed away. "Me." She whispered in an low voice. "Bell died that day, not you."
"But I'm talking to you, you're alive...in my head." I wanted to recomfort Bell but she wasn't grinning or pulling out an smile on her face.
"You're playing myself, that's different." She told me, sounding sad & strange and her words did hit me hard. "You thought at first that you were still Bell until your memories of your real life came back." She expressed, not removing her eyes from me. "Everyone around you proclaimed that you weren't Bell anymore."
"I know." I snorted, feeling an tear on my left eye.
"You kept yourself saying that Bell was no more you but there's still something that make you remember that Bell is still in you." She proclaimed, moving her finger to point at my chest.
"I still got his memories in me." I sniffed, thinking about 'my time in Vietnam'. "Am I becoming like him ?" I demanded to Bell who shook her head.
"No, you will never be like him, we're not monsters." She answered clearly, sensing the truth in her voice. "Dying an hero...or living enough to become the villain...."
"Must be what Adler was thinking about us at this moment." I suggested and Bell nodded to me, an little grin on her face.
"Yeah and look where you are now." She told me, looking at my clothes. "Do you think that...Stitch or Perseus will try anything like we suffered ?" She asked me and she was sounding worried & scared.
"I wouldn't want that." I responded, looking down at the sea. "They are maybe going to hurt Park and I don't want that." I claimed loudly.
"We both don't want that, Yirina." She admitted, calling me by our real name. "Jess Blackwell & Yirina Grigoriev are the same person but they both loved Park." She affirmed, smiling as an tear fell from her left eye like me.
"That's not the only common point between me & you." I grinned. "Bell was acting like Yirina...careful, generous and protecting the innocents." I slowly nodded, the tear still present in our both left eyes.
"You're right but Bell doesn't really exist anymore to be honest." She expressed, sadly. "You make me live even if it's painful for you." She said before she got up to slowly return to her original position. "We're maybe going to talk later but now, you have to go back into the real world." She added as she took out her M1911 back in her hand.
"You know that you don't have to do this." I told her, closing my eyes only to think about what will happen.....
"I know but it's the only way to make you live."
I couldn't move myself to avoid that to happen but I closed my eyes when the gunshots occured and them...they did actually wake me up back on that bed, still on the same position, facing the concrete, my eyes still looking dry after having silently cried all night and having lived that troubling moment back on that cliff. Talking to Bell...to myself...I don't know how to really feel about it, it's troubling....
"Still playing the sleeping beauty ?" An voice broke me out of my thoughts, realizing that someone was watching me and when I turned around, I could see Sonya Kuzmin themself, standing up at an few meters from the bed.
"Have you been watching me ?" I asked them, my voice sounding like I didn't drink or eat something like 2 days now.
"No." They simply said, moving their right hand behind their back. "Seems that you didn't drink, listening to your voice, take it !" They told me as they gently throw at me an little bottle of water and even if I was suspicious, I couldn't resist to drink almost all of it. "Damn, you're thirsty as hell."
"I didn't drink for days, Sonya." I exclaimed, putting the bottle aside and passing my hands through my face to clean any traces of water next to my mouth.
"Freya said that you didn't eat last night." They expressed, sounding like worried in them. "You should eat, you know." They suggested, gesturing to the plate that was still there, next to the bed.
"Why are you worried about me ?" I asked them in an curious tone. "That doesn't seems your style, you're mostly rude to be honest."
"Is that an compliment ?" They demanded, crossing their arms to me and I couldn't help myself to smile as they took back my words from last day.
"Maybe..." I raised my shoulders as I finally decided myself to take an sweet in my hands to eat it...only one. "Why are you here by the way ?"
"I was tasked, along with Knight to bring you to the 'first test'." They answered, making me curious.
"The first test ?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow.
"They want you to have an talk with someone." They explained, uncrossing their arms and slowly walking towards me. "Can't tell you but you will know soon."
"And I guess that I don't have any choices ?" They nodded to me, biting their lips.
"Hey, Sonya, I don't have all time to be an fucking guard, move on !" I could hear Knight's voice outside the cell and in fact, he was standing next to the door.
"You heard the man ? Let's move on." They ordered, taking some handcuffs from their pockets as they approach me with it. "Show me your hands." They demanded and I showed my hands to them before they started to handcuff me. "Come on, let's not keep Knight and the other waiting." They breathed before they make me walk with them outside the cell.
It was looking to be my first time out of that cell as I was escorted by Sonya and the irish Knight away to the mysterious place they were bringing me to. I was nonetheless scared to be honest and each time we were passing next to an door, I was wondering where Park could be, fearing about her state and how is she. I just hope that she's okay in this shitty situation...I just want that for her, to be well & okay.
After an little walk inside that long building, also thinking about trying to see through an window to see the light of the day, we were arrived near an door that was kept by Freya & Stitch themselves, awaiting for us. They were looking about that test they are going to make me do, seeing by their faces.
"So, this is my first test !" I muttered, looking at Stitch with eyes that could say that it was stupid as Sonya was unhandcuffing me.
"We're going to see how advanced it is to make an evaluation." Freya explained and I narrowed my eyes, understanding that 'it' was meaning my brainwashing.
"You're going to have an talk with Adler !" Stitch directly said to me, making my eyes go wide....I was really going to talk with Adler himself, he was just behind that door and for real....
"And...what I will talk about with him ? Our capture ?" I asked them.
"Well, we will see how it goes." Stitch told me before he put his hand on the door handle. "Have an good talk, Bell." He scoffed as he opened the door, forcing me to get inside and discovering that it was an interrogation room with an window like an mirror at our side and in the middle of the room....Adler, sitting on an chair next to an table...almost wearing an part of the outfit he use back in that mall.
"Bell, what an pleasure !" He started with an grin on an part of his lips, his jaw almost fully bearded.
"You look like shit, Russ'." I joked about seeing him like that as I slowly moved towards the empty chair in front of him....was he acting in front of them or it was just him been him ?
"See that you didn't lost your sense of humor." He exclaimed, looking at me with great eyes with me sitting on the chair. "I heard that you were captured, an mission that did go wrong, right ?" He questioned me.
"No, we got sold out by Hudson." I replied, feeling the angriness in my voice.
"Hudson sold you out....why ?" He was sounding an bit shocked to hear that.
"Don't know, must be one of the numerous CIA bullshits that I had to face in my life." I said, putting my arms on the table and taking a quick look at myself on the mirror. "What happened to you ?"
"Oh, they're trying to make me suffer like I did to the one-eyed guy." He responded, not even sounding ashamed of it, even breaking an little laught of it. "They're trying but it doesn't work." He affirmed clearly.
"Still thinking about our missions in Vietnam ?" I demanded as he was looking thinkful on his face.
"Yeah, wasn't the easiest days to live." He grinned, stretching his arm around.
"We've been in Vietnam together, we've fought together, we bled together, remember ?" I told him back, having remembered his words to me long ago and he nodded.
"You did remember that well !" He snorted with an smile as in the inside, I wasn't getting happier to have an talk with him, even moving my right arm under the table to clench my fist. "Remember the time you did come out to me after that mission in Khe Sanh ?" I nodded to them, fainting to remember an event that is fake. "You literally told me that you slept with an french nurse an day before." He was really making up an story here and I had to get along it.
"Yeah, it was...I could remember it well." I whispered, slowly nodding.
"But at that time, we got importants things...we had an job to do !" He....he said it again for real this time and my reaction was to close my eyes for seconds, knowing the pain of hearing it, my ears hurting me as echoes of that phrase was heard by me. "You know that." He added as I reopened my eyes.
"Yeah, I fucking know that." I muttered in silence as I got up from my chair. "It wasn't my way, Adler." I started, realizing that...it wasn't Bell talking, that was my real thoughts coming out of my mouth. "You made me participate in that war that wasn't mine."
"It was always for the greater good, kid." He claimed, still hearing him back on that cliff. "If you didn't came in Vietnam, you wouldn't have an big career in the MI6....I made you, Bell." He affirmed.
"You know that you weren't obliged to do that, there were other ways to make me but not that war." I expressed my pain, obliged to still talk about Vietnam, acting like Bell would do. "Did you actually cared for me ? You almost left me to die back there." I pointed in an random direction that wasn't in the window way.
"Bell, it was always for the greater good." He repeated again with an smile, urged to be punched. "And like I told you...it was never personal !" He added, closing my eyes for 4 seconds, realizing that it was too late to back down. "Bell, we have....." He was going to say before I decide to literally jumped over the table, fully decided to punch him.
I wasn't going to contain myself any longer with him in front of him. I threw myself in him, causing him to fall with his chair on the ground before I start to threw punches at his face, wanting him to suffer like I did years ago, like I'm doing right now. Each punch, I was getting more angrier than before. He make me suffer, it was my turn now. He was trying to defend himself with his arms but it was useless as each punch I was making was always in an different places....
"Quick, grab her !" I heard someone shout loudly as the door of the room opened with me still punching Adler until two persons got my hands on me, taking me back from Adler.
"Let me go ! Let me kill that son of an bitch !" I ordered in an rage as Freya & Sonya were in fact the ones to hold me back as Knight was moving to hold Adler back.
"I want to kill that british cunt, let me go, fucking Irish !" Adler was also angry at me as Stitch put himself between the two of us.
"Get her back to her cell and make sure she's okay !" Stitch ordered Freya & Sonya before he start to look at Adler and that Freya & Sonya was dragging me out of the room.
"Calm down." Freya suggested as in me, I was starting to replace my rage by silent cries, starting to cry for real as the two were putting me back into my cell and on my bed.
"Let me kill him..." I demanded but this time, I was mostly crying, almost pleading as I looked around, away from Freya & Sonya sight, the two were like worried about me....
"Freya, what happened ?" Sonya asked to her.
"I don't know but...." She started as she wasn't sure of what she saw in that room, having seen me in an big rage and now, crying inside and outside.....
"Adler did really broke her apart like she was nothing, he will pay for that one day !"
Fun promt: Kara thinking she is ill and asking Alex to check her over because she gets red anf has sweaty hands when Lena is around
It starts like this: a racing heart, trembling fingers, and an irresistible urge to lock eyes, no matter how awkward or unwarranted such a thing may be.
Clark looks at her in confusion the first time he notices it—shockingly enough, fairly early in her affliction. She’s spent far more time with Lena as Kara than as Supergirl, and she’s still not quite sure how to act around the woman who’d somehow become her best friend when she’s in the suit. She thinks that’s half the problem, that uncertainty around Lena, and that’s where the symptoms originate.
It’s new, it’s strange, and this whole situation is making Kara feel some kind of way. Lena is mumbling something about her mother, Lillian Luthor is rolling her eyes and making a snarky comment back, and Kara is trying to regulate her breathing, control her heart beat, and avoid Clark’s eyes all at once.
(It’s not possible.
Mostly because she finds herself increasingly focused on Lena’s movements, on the words coming out of her mouth, on the way her eyes flick between the crest on Kara’s chest and Lillian Luthor’s sneer.
It’s not possible, and Clark does her a kindness by not mentioning it—not that day, and not anytime later, remaining entirely silent on the issue.)
It escalates like this: her previous symptoms are accompanied by harder to hide physical reactions. Her hands are sweaty, her cheeks are red, and when Lena gives her those looks (those looks, the ones that should be illegal, the ones that set Kara’s blood on fire), she feels rather faint.
But there’s so much between them—between Kara and Lena, between Supergirl and the CEO of L-Corp, between the Kryptonian and the Luthor—that it’s hard to take a moment to figure out what the symptoms mean (hard to even notice that she feels them almost exclusively when she’s in Lena’s presence, and sometimes when she catches glimpses of Lena on television or in the paper).
(Nia notices the symptoms by accident. Or perhaps she merely dreams about it, Kara isn’t sure. But Nia doesn’t seem to think of it as anything serious, winking at Kara knowingly whenever Lena is around.
Somehow this worries Kara more.)
It comes to a head like this: they mend their relationship and go back to their easy friendship, except everything is different. Lena’s touch feels like an electric shock, her hugs leave Kara sagging into her, and just a whiff of Lena’s perfume leaves Kara breathless. (Through it all, she still has the racing heart, the trembling fingers, the irresistible urge to lock eyes. She still has to wipe her sweaty hands on her pants, turn her head when she knows it’s become far too red, and giggles nervously to hide the fact she’s feeling faint.)
Are you all right, Kara?” Lena asks one day, clearly having noticed all the symptoms long ago, but choosing an unremarkable night at Kara’s apartment to finally bring them up. Kara swallows hard, wishing she could look away from Lena’s green, green eyes.
(She wonders, idly, if perhaps that’s what’s causing her symptoms—Lena’s green eyes.
She wonders, but only for a brief moment. Kryptonite, after all, didn’t leave her feeling like she can take on any challenge the way Lena’s eyes do.)
“I think I’m coming down with something,” Kara manages to say, biting her lip. She’s never felt this way before. Could it be an alien bug? Some sort of Kryptonian cold? Perhaps that’s why Clark had remained silent when he first noticed it.
“Really?” Lena asks, reaching out and placing her hand on Kara’s forehead, the simple action being the catalyst for several reactions: Kara’s breath hitched, her skin felt feverish, and she had the sudden, outrageous urge to step closer to Lena. “You feel fine to me,” she continues, her breath hot on Kara’s face, making her eyes flutter close without her consent. The urge to be closer becomes almost impossible to resist, and Kara forces herself to pull away from Lena’s touch.
“Definitely sick,” she informs Lena as she opens her eyes and tries to ignore her racing heart and clammy hands. “I’ll see Alex about it tomorrow.”
x
Alex looks at her with a single raised eyebrow—a cross between a disappointed mother and a very amused older sister. They’re at the DEO, in the med bay, the sun lamp’s glaring light above her making Kara wince a little. But Alex had insisted they leave it on the second Kara had mentioned she felt a little under the weather.
Now, though, Alex looks like she regrets this whole conversation. (And maybe also wishes she was recording it.)
“Run that by me again,” she says, ducking her head and putting her hands on her hips.
“I said I think I’m sick.”
“Oh, I got that part. I want you to run the symptoms by me again. Slowly this time.” When Kara doesn’t immediately speak, Alex looks up with an expectant look, motioning with one of her hands for Kara to get on with it.
Kara runs through the symptoms once more, this time a little more slowly. She ends with what had Alex rolling her eyes in the first place, by mentioning she only feels the symptoms when she’s around Lena.
“Great, thanks. Now. How did you feel when you had a crush on James?” Alex asks, giving Kara a significant look.
“Crush? I don’t see how that’s relevant to—oh,” Kara mumbles, blinking rapidly.
“Yeah, oh,” Alex says, clearly trying not to laugh as she leans forward and places her hands on Kara’s shoulders. “How long have you had a crush on Lena?” When Kara can do nothing but take in a deep breath, Alex struggles not to laugh again. “That long, huh?”
“I didn’t notice,” Kara protests.
“Obviously.”
“Nia knew,” Kara realizes aloud. Alex snorts.
“Probably.”
“Oh gosh, Clark knew too!”
Alex can’t help it anymore; she breaks down into laughter, actual tears forming in her eyes.
x
Once Kara knows what she’s feeling, it’s a little bit easier to control the symptoms when she’s around Lena. Mostly, it’s because she can stop panicking as she desperately wonders why her heart is racing, and can instead just stare and think about how pretty Lena looks in the sunlight.
“You seem better. Did Alex figure out what was wrong?” Lena asks suddenly, sitting down on one of the park’s many benches. They’d taken to walking during their lunches together, figuring that they (namely Lena) couldn’t afford to have Big Belly Burger milkshakes and not try to get her 10,000 steps in.
“Oh,” Kara stutters, sitting down next to Lena, fidgeting with her glasses. “Yes, she did.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Was it some rare alien virus? Can you catch human colds? What was wrong?” Lena sounds more curious about the science of it all than anything, but Kara’s long since learned not to let that get to her. She knows Lena cares, but she also knows that Lena’s a lot like her father, a scientist and researcher at heart.
“No, sorry. I wasn’t actually sick, apparently.”
“Oh?” Lena asks, her curiosity morphing. A smile plays at her lips, and that look (the one that sets Kara’s blood aflame) makes a stellar comeback. But rather than look away like she usually does, Kara leans into it, basking in the look, in the attention, in the feelings Lena’s able to elicit. “So what was wrong?”
“I have a crush.”
“A crush?” Lena repeats, sounding incredulous.
“Why, do you not do crushes?”
“No, because I’m approaching thirty,” Lena says, though she shifts on the bench so that she’s pressed against Kara’s side. “I don’t crush, I pine.”
“Pine? That’s somehow better?”
“Pining is more sophisticated, Kara,” Lena informs her, giving that look again. “So who are you crushing on?”
“You’re the sophisticated one, who are you pining for?”
For a moment, it doesn’t look like Lena will answer. But then Kara hears Lena’s heart do a strange stutter for a change, and Lena’s green eyes are focused on Kara’s face, and Kara is helpless to look away.
“You may know her, actually,” Lena says slowly, the edge of her hand pressing against Kara’s. “She’s blonde. Blue eyes. Her cousin is a reporter or something.”
“Oh,” Kara manages, realizing she’d hoped but hadn’t quite actually prepped herself should it happen. She feels faint again, feels the sweaty palms and the need to sag into Lena’s side. “She sounds nice,” Kara says lamely.
“Very nice,” Lena returns, looking amused. Kara is so helpless to look away. “I kept waiting for her to say something, for years it feels like, but she never did, so I assumed it was one sided. I didn’t realize she just hadn’t recognized what she felt.” Lena’s more than a little nervous, Kara can tell, and she takes Lena’s, well, perfect hand in her own sweaty one.
“Definitely not one sided,” she rushes out. “Just not used to having romantic feelings for someone.”
“So?” Lena prods after a moment, their eyes still locked.
“So what?”
“Who are you crushing on?”
Kara reaches out with her free hand and brushes a stray hair out of Lena’s face. “I should hope that it’s obvious that it’s you.”
Kara x reader married life? Lots and lots of fluff? 🥺
Kara Danvers x Reader #4
Words: 1,163
Warnings: Cuteness
Notes:
You ask and you shall receive! I hope this is fluffy enough for you (sorry for any spelling mistakes). Also, eat your vitamins people. People don’t usually realize when they’re low on a vitamin and it can cause some serious issues! Getting enough Vitamin D is especially important now that winter is coming. So do it. Maybe check in with your doctor to get a blood test and make sure you’re okay on your vitamins too..okay i’m done.
——
Kara Zor-El isn’t one to be tested. She’s the most stubborn person you’ve ever met, and back when you first met her it used to be something that drew you in. Now though, it seems to be bringing you a lot of problems.
A lot of them.
“Lift up your tongue, Y/N, or I swear to Rao,” Kara threatens you, looking down at you from where you're seated on her bed. Your bed.
She keeps bothering you about taking your vitamins, like you’re some type of child (yes, you may have just been revealed to have vitamin d deficiency, but still). “Doctors are stupid, Kara. They don’t know what they’re talking about,” you grumble.
You’re stubborn too, Kara has come to find out, but she’s always been up for a challenge.
“If you don’t swallow that supplement right now you won’t get any kisses for a month.”
The only reason why you believe her is because she’s in her Supergirl suit, using her Supergirl voice, and sounding all threatening. “You wouldn’t,” you say anyways, resulting in one of her ‘Supergirl looks.’
“Do you really want to test whether or not I care about your kisses more than your wellbeing? I doubt the answer will surprise you.” Kara says, looking smug when she sees the defeat on your face. “Swallow and lift your tongue.”
You do, with no small amount of reluctance, and wait till Kara double checks with her X-ray vision (she could have done that to begin with).
“Happy?” You grumble, burying yourself back into your blankets.
“Very,” Kara assures, grinning and pressing a kiss to the top of your head, the only part visible with the blankets.
“Well, you know what they say. Happy wife; happy life.”
—
“Kara!” You yell into the empty apartment knowing that Kara is always listening to you.
When she told you that the first time it was a bit unsettling, but then she reassured that she’s only ever listening to your heart, and only pays attention when she hears her name.
“Yes?” Kara asks after zooming in. It’s a new record.
“What were you doing?” You ask,
Kara blinks at you, somehow feeling like she’s become your assistant ever since the two of you have gotten married. “Is that why you called me?”
You pause, trying to recall why you wanted here other than the fact that you were missing her. You remember. “I need you to get me some water,” you admit, only feeling slightly guilty, “it’s too far away.”
Kara watches you for a moment, then asks, suspiciously, “are you pregnant?”
If you had the water you asked for you’d be spitting it out. As it is though, you just choke on nothing. Kara moves closer to pat your back. “No, Kara,” you finally breathe out. “Thankfully that’s the one thing your superhuman body isn’t able to do to me.”
Kara lets out a relieved breath, as if for a moment she genuinely did believe you were pregnant. You think you should be offended.
You can’t bring yourself to be when Kara finally gets you your water and then says, “I was at the fortress talking to my mom.”
Your features soften almost immediately, like it always does when Kara talks about her mom, or krypton at all. You pull her into a hug and she lets you. “Did I interrupt?”
“No,” Kara assures, “I was just about to come home to you.”
You nod against her head. “Do you want to go to the zoo tomorrow?” You ask after a pause.
Kara gasps, pulling away to look at your face. “Are you asking me out on a date?”
You shrug, “who would’ve guessed? I like spending time with my wife.” You smirk. “I know. I’m the best wife ever, you don’t have to say it.”
Kara laughs, and her laugh has no right to still make you as free and happy as it does. Kara has no right. “You are,” Kara tells you when she’s done, kissing you with enough force to steal your breath away and then leaving for your bedroom right after. “Let’s go to sleep, baby,” she suggests smugly.
You're whipped for your alien, what about it?
“You still haven’t accepted my date request!”
“I’ll accept it if you promise to take your vitamins everyday.”
——
You concede to Kara’s condition bitterly—because somehow you know you’ll be taking them every day anyways, whether you like it or not—and now you’re at a wildlife sanctuary (you both figured i’d be both a more fun option and a better place to support.)
Kara ends up asking someone if she can touch the lions and gets a very firm no from both you and the worker.
Kara pouts at you, “why? I’m indestructible.”
She’s not, not really, but she definitely can’t get harmed by a lion. It’s not her you’re worried about though. “The lion deserves it’s teeth,” you tell her, patting her arm comfortingly.
Later, you ask the same worker if you can pet the tigers. You try to do it away from Kara but she hears, of course she does.
When you sulk back over to her after your rejection she throws an arm around your shoulder and squeezes you to her side. “You deserve your limbs connected to your body,” Kara laughs.
You try to hide your smile but fail miserably. You know she wouldn’t even let it come to that, so really she’s just being petty.
They let you both touch a baby bear some time later and Kara looks absolutely in love. It’s almost enough for you to threaten committing arson if they don’t give the bear to your wife, but you figure the other animals don’t deserve to suffer. Oh, and neither do the people.
—-
When you leave the sanctuary it’s evening time and you’re exhausted, but Kara’s rambling about how much fun she had so you force yourself to stay awake on the drive to listen to her.
She’s beautiful when she’s excited, and beautiful when she’s happy, so it’s hard to not want to be awake anyways.
Unfortunately your wants don’t align to your bodies needs and you end up falling asleep halfway home, much to Kara’s amusement.
She carries you up the stairs to your shared apartment, helps you change into new clothes while you’re groggy and sleepy, and then, when you’re on the verge of sleep again, she whispers; “I love you. Thank you for being the partner I've always longed for, and the wife I'm still not sure I deserve.”
You grumble and shake your head, mumbling quietly, “You, Kara Danvers, deserve the multiverse, that much is obvious.”
Kara will always be amazed with how much love you give, even while half asleep.
“Wow. You’re very sappy,” she teases.
You push her face away with a frown, “let me sleep. I’ll get back to you in the morning.”
“Okay. I love you,” Kara repeats.
“I love you, too, Wife.”
