I hate how the critism of Veilguard has turned into "Its so woke" instead of focusing on the actual issues.
LIKE THE THREE CHOICES THING? I CAN'T BELIEVE PEOPLE JUST GOT OVER THAT SO QUICKLY?
Or the messy development with it's rewriting and devs & writers that actually knew and worked on the previous games being fired??
Hell I'd rather suffer through people debating over the artstyle for all eternity than have to hear another "The game is bad because nonbinary wouldn't exist in Thedas" or it's somehow even stupider cousin "The game is woke because none of the companions are hot" (both takes I've seen multiple times by now)
Congrats to the gamer dude bros for successfully derailing proper critism. If I was working on Veilguard and saw that the loudest critique was people complaining about pronouns, I would stop listening and I can't even blame them for it because every damn critique video ever has to have a segment dedicated to hating on "the wokeness"

honestly, maybe it's a hot take or whatever, but I think that tearing down the veil and *potentially* bringing back the immortality to the elves would not have helped them a lot
#like ok i'm not 100% sure that tearing down the veil would even make them immortal again#bc the problem is that the elves of today are so far distanced from the ones is solas's time i don't know how that would even work#or maybe i'm stupid and missing context clues but whatever#but like what service would that *actually* do to the elves?#it won't bring their erased history back#it won't suddenly break all the chains of the ensalved elves#or give better quality of life to those in the alienages#bc take fucking tevinter#yeah if suddenly all enslaved elves became mages it sure would help them#but their enslavers are ALSO mages#who had way more training and years of practice#and then the ones in the south#if they suddenly all became mages#what would stop the templars of jus rounding everyone up and committing a genocide?#what would stop the ruler of orlais of burning the alienages again#like waht gets to me is that#the current situation of elves in thedas is a political problem#that needs to be solved through that#through rebellion through changing the status quo#to pushing for political powers to protect their elven citizes#not through magical means#bc that time is gone#and the dalish and the city elves have SUCH different cultures#than the ones of the first elves#that like...what would they gain?#solas could have spent his time actively encouraging all elves in thedas to rebel#to break their chains and rise up against their masters#but instead he's choosing to risk literally everyone's lives bc of HIS regrets#like he is only thinking of the past and of himself and of the people of his time#the way he treats the dalish is a good example of that

kind of unfortunate that so many fantasy epics are also war novels because i will be honest i just do not like war novels that much... the grand clashing of forces is compelling obviously but it requires characters to talk about so much practical battle strategy and while i can get my brain to comprehend all these fantasy maps and kingdoms and borders and battalions and front lines and army movements it takes up. so much space in the book. feels like i'm fighting a war of my own trying to get through it sometimes
#this is about the witcher books rn but also about book four of the inheritance cycle#roran is hot and i like seeing him with his hammer and his dedication and love for his wife!#also i am here for dragons and it is kind of a major tonal shift watching this man try to navigate becoming a military general!#like i'll learn all the names of the witcher kings and queens and learn where their provinces are and which towns are in which kingdom#and who borders what and where and how all those political machinations work. it's important to the plot.#damn it's a lot of names though#meve is the queen of lyria and rivia is in lyria. this much i know. because she is the only queen.#completely irrelevant information most of the time.#cintra is north of nilfgaard. nilfgaard is south of fucking everything.#cintra is like? middle of the map i think? there are other southern territories that got conquered by nilfgaard before cintra fell#other southern places. um. toussaint. i know this because this location is often referenced in fanfictions about aiden thewitcher#my favorite character that does not actually appear anywhere in canon aiden thewitcher#man i'm thinking about him again... fucking miss him... geralt and ciri and having a bigass scar on their face as a reminder of hatred and revenge ❤️ i know geralt’s scar was invented just for this book, but the fact that he hides it with his headband, oh, that nenneke gave him… like ciri tries in vain to hide her scar, combing her hair in such a way… and ciri’s scar is unable to be hidden. whereas geralt probably hides his well, since we never heard of it before ;). maybe it is because they are a vicious cat, and a calm, composed wolf…
now i just want to see child ciri, examining geralt’s face and his strange eyes on their way to kaer morhen—during which he surely took his headband off. once or twice. looking up at him with her huge child’s eyes, at his weathered face… witnesses below his hairline an ugly scar from ages ago, but doesn’t ask about it… he has so many anyways…

this is like the first conversation scene of Dragon Age: Origins, and if we'd paid attention to it, we would have seen it was clear foreshadowing that the elven gods were "wrong" in a way that the Dalish don't expect. I've seen people claim the elven gods plot is some annoying new direction in the story that is made up to throw the series off track from what it's really about. so let me repeat myself
this conversation happens in the first ten minutes of Dragon Age: Origins
also I figured out how to use the Origins Toolset to look at the dialogue trees so you're all in a world of hurt

ever since tiktok recommended me a youtube video that discussed the artbook for veilguard and what could've been (potentially), i've been going actually yeah, where are the agents of fen'harel in the veilguard? why is he all alone and there's no one causing problems on his behalf when there canonically have been his agents mentioned since tresspasser?

my neutral dragon age trait is that 50% of the time i'm like "the more i critique the games, the more i love them. i can appreciate each game for what they are but my criticism and frustration over what they could be are a sign of love" and the other 50% is like "this is the writing of the dragon age series. sure. why not. this may as well happen."
#post inspired by seeing a post where someone was asking a blog like 'hey ive only played veilguard what is a mage circle'#50% biting the bars of my cage over the way lore/plot/priorities have shifted and changed over time#50% along for the ride#but on that first point: looking at the plot of veilguard (stopping solas/elgar'nan and ghilan'nain)#im not surprised the mage/templar shit wasn't a big deal#and honestly any frustration i have with that is more so aimed at dai#bc dai was what first reduced the mage/templar war to 'here are some assholes fighting in the woods'#however.#objectively WILD that someone could play ur whole ass game and not know what mage circles/templars are#and then the confusion over an elven rook's backstory is honestly just laughable to me like akjdsjkdf#theyre dalish but they also lived in a town and if they're a mage they also studied somewhere#like. honestly imo not a big issue but like. a simple dialogue choice could've solved this.#it's so funny to me bc it's ridiculous but also. bring back ambient dialogue choices.#like tldr though#i super enjoyed veilguard and i appreciated it for what it did#and while not perfect. i'm a sucker for a story about friends and bonds.#and i think as an interpersonal story it works really well#and i can at the very least respect the writers/devs making the game not as open world#even though i do miss that a lot (as well as talking to ur companions mechanics)#however. the detachment from previous lore is definitely jarring.#not that i think veilguard needed to be about (for instance) the mages and templars#and honestly im happy we got companions that felt unique#bc i was getting real tired of 'here are the elves who hate each other. here is the one who doesnt trust mages'#etc etc etc#and getting to see all these factions was really nice too (though in a perfect world we'd have a legit origin quest imo)#but even just. some kind of way to bring in prev lore#tldr 2 i have my frustrations with the narrative arc as a whole and find them fun to talk abt#but sometimes im just like. it already happened. it's already written.#i will think abt what could've been while also just having fun w/ what i got#final tldr 3 i think dragon age is just the one series that im not always itching to meta essay on LMAOOO
