Pride Month—LGBTQIA+ History: Paraguay

1959, Aranda, 108 and the letter of an amoral

On September 1, 1959, radio host Bernardo Aranda, who worked at Radio Comuneros, died of calcination in the room of a tenant, in the Barrio Obrero de Asunción. The police indicated that Aranda had been murdered in strange circumstances, in a "settling of accounts between homosexuals." His alleged murderers left his body on his bed and set fire to the room to erase evidence or leave some macabre message.

The repressive reaction on the part of the Stroessner dictatorship unleashed a veritable "witch hunt" against the alleged members of the homosexual community of the time. The authorities drew up a list of 108 people, all male, whom they considered homosexual, and proceeded to arrest and torture them without mercy, in the search for Aranda's murderers.

"It was never proven whether any of the 108 detainees was related to the Aranda crime. It is believed that the operation was carried out to cover up the relationship that Aranda had with a member of the stronist power circle," highlights a statement by the SomosGay organization.

The case became known as the story of "the 108 and one burned," which was told in a low voice, since there was an implicit agreement not to speak publicly on the subject. Those who made up the list of "the 108" came to be considered undesirable people for a large part of society and, by extension, those who were considered to be homosexual or gay were told: "It's a 108."

On September 12, the Paraguayan newspaper El País, akin to the dictatorship, opened its edition with the following headline: “108 People of Doubtful Moral Conduct Are Being Interrogated. Intense Police Action. They expect Results ”. Days later, the newspaper published the complete list of the detainees, whom it accused of having “amoral behavior”. Since then, 108 has stopped appearing in the room numbers of some Paraguayan hotels and houses, in cars and even in the lists of students in schools.

One of its editors loosely counted 108 suspected suspects in the murder, ”explains the Brazilian historian, Clara Cuevas. "Likewise, while it was degraded through articles without criteria, letters from readers, cartoons, etc., the social rejection of any glimpse similar to an individual cataloged as 108 was mainstreamed, ”says the anthropologist Florencia Falabella.

People (mostly men, sometimes included even bouncing on the charts), were also called amoral.

The artistic circuits frequented by Aranda (who reminded him as very fierce, eloquent and avant-garde), the "scientific" characteristics described in the media about amorality, a regional and global conjuncture that sought the internal enemy and persecuted communism, the cut to any idea remotely contrary to the regime, hatred and ignorance, were some of the factors that started a ridiculous persecution of any sign considered "dangerous". Anyone who seemed to be moving away from the dictatorial regime was tortured, their property confiscated, sent into exile, or their media closed. For 10 years, the police raided opponents and entertainment venues linked to the gay community. They were arrested in the street, tortured in police stations and the press echoed the discrimination

On 09/30/1959, the newspaper El País recorded the anonymous publication of “La carta de un amoral”, in protest against the massive and arbitrary arrests.

A fragment of the letter states: “We follow a vocation that is as old as humanity itself, and in this century of consecration of all human rights, no one can deny us the right to make of ourselves, of our physical continent, what we want to without bothering others who do not want to do the same ”.

In 2010, the Paraguayan filmmaker Renate Costa released her documentary film "108 Cuchillo de palo", in which she approached the case from the personal story of an uncle of hers, Rodolfo Costa, who had appeared dead in his home in 2000, naked and lying on the ground. Researching this story, which her family covered up, she discovered that his uncle was one of the 108.

"History must be known so that certain events are not repeated. Such is the case of the 108 and one burned, because throughout the government of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner, this modus operandi - of accusing a certain number of people of being gay - it was repeated on several occasions, "says the SomosGay organization.

The letter "La carta de un amoral" was a manifesto that opened the public fight for sexual diversity. It was in full dictatorship and 10 years before Stonewall. It's due to this letter that September 30 commemorates the right of TLGBI people in Paraguay. This letter is claimed by the TLGBI organizations of Paraguay as the first public demonstration for sexual freedom known in the country.

hey maca :)) I have sth that I’d love to hear your input on! (wall of text incoming so beware- I’m absolutely not mad if you don’t want to answer lmao). Basically it’s about how you portray women in your works and to what extent you see that portrayal mirrored in the canon books. I have noticed that a lot of writers tend to go a traditional route with for example daughters not being heirs like you also mentioned in an answer for a wtsioa ask on here. Considering the cultures Vere and Akielos are based on that’s obviously very logical and a lot of authors (including you) make it work fantastically! Yet personally I never got the vibe of Vere and Akielos being as patriarchal in canon, mostly because the Information we get is kind of confusing. On one hand damen is a walking manosphere (and. all of Akielos in general as well) without any prominent female figures in his life but on the other hand damen only ever speaks appreciatively of for example the female vaskian warriors. Both countries seem to ban women from the army yet Damen also refers to a warrior queen. The regent is a total misogynist but with the wording Laurent uses it almost seems like that is more the exception and not the general rule of veretian court life. Both countries also have ties to Vask, an exclusive matriarchy and Akielos is said to be similar to Patras which Pacat has stated is also partly a strong matriarchy due to vaskian occupations in the past. I could go on for a lot longer but I guess that damens overall positive attitude towards women and especially stereotypically spoken masculine women is what sticks out the most to me. It just seems kind of misplaced in a world that supposedly is as sexist as the original cultures from our world. Which is why I’d say both countries do have gender roles but are overall a lot more egalitarian than their respective real world og cultures. But that’s only my take and I’d love to hear more on what others think about the portrayal of women in canon and how they chose to portray it in fanfiction. HELLO!!! Thank you for asking me interesting stuff :, ) you always have the best questions and my sad little inbox is open to you any time, friend. I divided this into parts, so:

My portrayal of women: I need to work on this a lot lmao. I’m not proud of any female character I have ever written for this fandom, and I’m also not proud to say I struggle horribly when it comes to writing female OCs, especially if the story is not about a female character that is a literal projection of me. Or Bella Swan (yes, Twilight literally shaped my sad little brain and the way I write and consume fiction).

Authors writing female characters in a “traditional” way (for fantasy settings): I can’t speak for other authors but I definitely think, in my case, that using the “it’s a patriarchal society, women have no rights, women can’t be heirs, etc.” blueprint is a matter of being lazy. It’s quick, and easy, and it’s been done before so we all know how it works and a) it’s unlikely that you’ll mess it up (in the plot hole kind of way) and b) it’s obvious that most readers know how the usual system works and so you don’t have to spend paragraphs or even chapters explaining it to them. I am very lazy when it comes to world-building for fics. Why? Because when I’m writing fanfiction I don’t give two shits about the world, I just care about the characters doing Things and having Feelings. The moment you start to question these issues (a society where women can join the army, where they can be heirs, where maybe they can have multiple husbands, etc.) a billion issues arise because it’s not the “usual way” and so you’ll have to deal with “unusual problems”. See: plot holes, info-dumping, etc.

Vere and Akielos in canon: I think the books get very, very confusing at times when it comes to gender roles in that specific world. They also get very confusing about how royalty works, in my opinion. So:

Damen never mentions female influences in his life, not even nannies or wetnurses or anything. He mentions past queens and his mother, but even then… It’s always struck me as “what the actual fuck” that we get no information on Egeria. In TSP, he doesn’t even read as curious to me, especially when I think of that line that goes something like “oh, well, he’d never asked how tall she was”.

Then you have Jokaste, who is highborn and also… perhaps trained in politics? It’s unclear to me if she’s ever been directly involved in meetings or been an active member of the Council or even been allowed to study these issues. Clearly, she’s smart and capable and cunning, but like… how? Did she have private tutors? Is she a self-made woman? Like, what’s up with that? Are women allowed to engage in public politics? Are they allowed to be kyroi?

IMO, Damen complimenting the female warriors in Vask has to do with how appreciative he is of war-related stuff. Like, he thinks people with his own qualities are neat. We see this time and time again in the books—having honor, being brave, respecting one’s family, protecting those who need protecting… He compliments these things when he sees them in others, especially in Laurent. Obviously one of the big changes in Damen as a character is that he goes from being daddy’s boy to being like “well, actually… maybe war isn’t always the answer, and maybe war isn’t always honorable”. The Vaskian warriors prove themselves worthy of praise in a “manly” way, if that makes sense. (In the same way, Laurent proves himself in the Okton, not so much to Damen but to other Akielons). So, in essence, War > Any issues he may have about women doing Stuff.

Don’t judge me for this but I can’t remember the Regent talking about women. Do you have any quotes about that? I feel like Book 1 is super rich when it comes to world-building stuff and yet it’s the book I remember the least. I know he obviously has a preference for boys and not girls, but I don’t recall him having interactions with Vannes or ladies at court? I’M SORRY I’M SO STUPID but I don’t own the book so I can’t exactly word search my way out of this one, and so instead of saying stupid stuff, I’m asking anyone reading this (lol, you and my mom probably) to please tell me what canon says on this issue.

Ties to Vask: Er, yeah, I mean… They’re clearly not at war with Vask and have some sort of economic deal (there are Vaskian pets in Arles? Which makes me wonder if they, like, buy them from Vask? Or if the pets are Vaskian and turn into pets in Vere? Slaves are not like pets so I don’t know?), BUT just because they have deals with this kingdom/are on good terms with the ruler does not mean they necessarily approve? Like, maybe they’re like “yeah, it’s weird they give women so much power, but also I need that silk/leather/WHATEVER, so I’ll shut up about that”.

“Akielos is said to be similar to Patras which Pacat has stated is also partly a strong matriarchy due to Vaskian occupations in the past.” Is this in the books or is this something she said in an interview/post-releasing the trilogy? I know in the books there’s a quote that Akielos and Patras are similar because they both have slaves, but other than that I can’t quite remember anything about Patras? Like, I don’t recall Pacat giving us extensive and thorough world-building on either nation, at all. Once again, I am asking you for more explanations on this because I literally don’t remember.

4. My opinion and a Stupidity Disclaimer: As I’ve said above, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t remember and so I’m not trying to preach to anyone reading this or even saying that I hold the truth about… anything. I’m answering questions as I see fit and asking more questions when I run out of answers.

I believe world-building is not one of Captive Prince’s strong points. I will not elaborate on this because this is already long enough but there is simply, in my opinion, not enough material to reach any solid conclusions when it comes to world-building questions such as the role of women in Vere and Akielos, how compulsory homosexuality affects the development of highborn men and women in Vere, exactly what makes Akielos’ view on women different from Vere’s (if there’s any difference at all), the history of gender roles in this world and how it’s evolved up until canon, how Lamen can solve the heir issue without recurring to, once again, “the usual stuff” (concubines, bastards, marriage to women, etc.). It’s clear from what I’ve read that Pacat has come a long way as a writer and that her new trilogy has a lot more in-depth explanations to world-building questions, but this is not the case with CP, and so I’m afraid my answer to most of this is “I don’t know, and I don’t think anyone can know for sure”.

Lastly, I think I struggle a lot with understanding the role of women in this universe because I simply did not see enough women doing stuff, so I don’t know what’s permitted, what’s unacceptable, what’s illegal, what is straight-up execution worthy, etc. This is not me complaining about the lack of female characters in CP, at all, which I know is contradictory to stuff I’ve said in the past (I answered a couple asks a year ago about how I’d wished we’d gotten Vannes’ POV or Jokaste’s POV in the short stories). I’ve changed my mind, and so I think Pacat is entitled to write whatever she wants, just like I’m entitled to talk shit about KR with any living soul who will listen lmao.

To end this on a spicy note, I think sometimes we consume the wrong media and then complain because it doesn’t have what we wanted. If you’re looking for a trilogy with strong, fleshed-out female characters, Captive Prince is not for you. If you’re looking for a trilogy on female struggles and, I don’t know, defying… the male gaze… Captive Prince is not for you. There are plenty of books out there that focus exclusively on female characters, featuring sapphic relationships, and dealing with gender issues. WHICH IS NOT TO SAY WE SHOULDN’T BE HAVING THESE DISCUSSIONS. This is not about this particular question, but more about a lot of posts I’ve seen floating around… complaining about Pacat’s writing and the themes she didn’t explore.

This post is an open question that anyone can engage with, although I hope people will engage with this directly and on this platform, instead of… taking it somewhere else where I sadly can’t engage back! Some spoilery thoughts about Amphibia, bc I've already watched the finale and it's driving me crazy (before the tweet, bc I'm from a small country in a different timezone, don't @ me)

Stuff I would really like to see in the next season, mostly connected to specific characters and exploration of their personality/arcs/etc. Ok, ngl, it's mostly about Marcy. They focused on making her likable a little bit too much.

1. Marcy

I don't think she'll stay dead for long- one, it's a kid's show, two, they didn't introduce resurrection as a possibility for no reason, three, after the last reveal I think there's way more to her personality/arc for us to explore, now that we got to see her "dark side". And I'm here for it, because it makes me relate to Marcy even more now! Not because I was ever so possessive about anyone, but I used to have very similar problems with obsessing about random things, being a huge nerd and wanting to form relationships with people, but not knowing how to do that AT ALL. For a few years of middle school I thought I was literally busted, and just, unable to be loved by anyone.

Im fine now, thanks. But by the look of it, I think Marcy's issues are really deep seated. She may just be afraid to vocalize them, maybe thinking it will drive people away from her. And in a way, she hides behind this veneer of being a nice, harmless, clueless nerd and afraid that if she shows any more vices it will make people leave her. But I might be heavily projecting.

Anyway, I think this one flashback with Marcy being a danger to herself shows us, that it must be really hard to be her in the normal world. And I would like to see more of her expressing herself (have you noticed that Battle of The Bands was more about Anne and Sasha expressing themselves, and there was little to no Marcy input? I wonder if their friendship was always like that. I wonder if it's because of their dynamic with Sasha, or if maybe Sasha has no problem lying to Marcy bc deep down she doesn't see her as an equal, bc Marcy can be such a clueless nerd doormat. Seemingly. That will probably change now).

I'd like to see Marcy acknowledging her mistakes and communicating honestly with her friends! Even if it's gonna be painful! Since Anne is on Earth, I'm really curious about any eventual relationship development between Marcy and Sasha. Will Marcy be resurrected before Anne and the Plantars come back?

Also, eventually, I'd like to see some Marcy angst! How will she react to seeing Andrias again? How will her personality change after literally DYING? (will she stay adventurous, but get more cautious, you know- as in wise? is it metaphorically reflected by her having a long range weapon?)

2. Sasha

My dream scenario for Sasha is her using her greatest strength - resilience - to bring Marcy back, mostly by insisting "yes, I know she's dead, we'll try anyway. we'll bring her back". And actually succeed! Although I can see it going another way after Marcy's betrayal. I would like to see some tense, emotional, more honest conversations between these two tho. I feel they are more alike than they realize.

3. Anne

I'd like for her to have an episode on Earth, looking back at her old school and maybe revisiting old memories with new knowledge. That would be very emotional. And great. Also, her having the time to grieve BUT also be angry at Marcy, bc she deserves that, would be nice, too.

(I guess I also don't want to infantilize Marcy and imply she hasn't done sth horrible, bc she has? But the episode was constructed in a way that gave her little redeeming moments AND IMMEDIATELY PUNISHED HER so I guess it will be tough to balance).

ALSO HENRY EDWARD THE 5TH IM DYING, the only one? Yeah. Okay and I might have borrowed some stuff from Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon but they’re from my faves. WANT TO ADD THAT I STARTED THIS AS A ONE-SHOT THING BUT THEN MY INSPIRATION LEFT SO I DECIDED TO MAKE THIS A SOME-PARTS-STORY. part1:)

‘’But mother I do not desire to marry this woman. Not that I dislike her, but I do not want to get married. I can do that on my own. I’m a soon to be king.’’ Harry pleased his mother, trying to convince her that he would be fine by his own. Though Anne was already a queen and she knew that no king could command and rule a whole country on his own, they need a queen by their side, and so did Harry. ‘’Harry this is not about you. If you marry her, we’re going to have a more powerful country as well. Think about the profits young man. Love is not for people like us, love is for fools, we are royals. And if you want this country, you’ll want to marry this woman. End of the conversation. I have made my mind and decided what’s best for you and this country.’’ Anne said, sounded a little bit cold to her son, though her heart was breaking a little bit. Even though she was a queen, she wanted him to be happy, but happiness is not in their journal.

Harry’s destination had always been the same. Once he gets married, he’s the king. Since the day he was born, he was going to be the king of England. It was just a matter of time, till he gets married. He knew that he would not marry the one he wanted or will want. He’ll marry a princess, who has the same destination as his. Practically he knows that he’s marrying a country, not the woman. It’s a benefit. The country becomes more powerful, you take over and invade in more countries. Harry didn’t want war. He wanted to have a country so he could make sure everyone is fine, he wanted to put an end in those battles. Peace is what he asked for. And as much he was committed to this country since the day he was born, so much he was committed to Y/n. They had never met each other before, but they had been engaged since they were like 5. Y/n was the princess of Spain, one of Europe’s most powerful countries (I would like to add that if you don’t like Spain or sth, you can put whichever country you want to). She was not like all the other princesses she had ever met though. She was far different from that. She was really beautiful, she was. And also that was something men liked, except for her wealth. But she. She just admired how intelligent she was. She liked reading books, mostly poems so much, sometimes she wished she could be a poet. Y/n pretty much was the opposite of Harry. He desired to be a king, while she hoped she wouldn’t be a queen. She also was pretty much different from the other women. Because everyone believed in men, she believed in herself, she believed in her will and her power. A feminist someone would say. That was because deep down she knew that a king is useless without a queen, while a queen without a king is more powerful, moral of the story. Y/n had never met Harry in her entire life, but she liked to dream about him. She wasn’t thinking how his appearance is, how tall he might be. What colour his eyes were or his hair. She liked to dream about how kind he may be or if he likes to read like her. Maybe he wasn’t a cruel king like past ones, maybe this one was unique. Even though she sometimes liked the idea of Harry, she didn’t allow herself to love him. Not because she knew that royals that fall in love are few, but because she would be taken away. Away from her family and country. She wasn’t like the other ones who hoped one day they’ll marry a king and leave, she liked the idea of herself. In what she wanted to be. She liked to dream, a lot, and for a queen, that is dangerous. Harry never questioned how Y/n would be, because clearly, he didn’t even want it to be. He just wanted a kingdom to himself, to show people that he’s capable of doing something by himself. But even though he didn’t want to get married, that didn’t stop him from flirting. In fact, there was already a girl in his life, a woman he knew he would never marry. Being honest, she was just a maid, he was a king. But he actually felt like he loved her.

‘’Your grace?’’ a woman sounded behind the closed door that was knocked 3 times. At that very moment, Harry knew, he had lost track of time thinking about the whole situation. ‘’Come in.’’ he ordered sitting in the chair next to the desk he had been standing by for 30 possible minutes. ‘’Your grace, there’s a letter for you.’’ the young woman informed him. ‘’Maggie.’’ Harry sighed with a smile in his face. Margaret, or Maggie as Harry preferred to call her, was a maid in the castle. She was Harry’s maid. She was always there for him. Literally, every time and everywhere. As the years went on they kinda became friends, and one thing brought another so, in the end, they became kind of ‘’secret’’ lovers. She wasn’t with someone like most of the maids and the staff was, but she knew Harry was. She knew that Harry would marry one day a princess and they will rule the country together, but she also hated it. Why couldn’t she marry the man she loved, because of what she was. Why did people label other people? Labels are for clothes, not humans. And as Harry had a bright smile in his face as he saw Maggie, she was everything but happy. ‘’Is it true?’’ she asked eyes almost watery. ‘’True what?’’ a little bit confused he replied because he really had no idea what she was talking about. ‘’You’re marrying her, aren’t you?’’ she sadly sighed taking a big breath ‘’it’s not even a question I guess, huh?’’ ‘’Mag.’’ he tried to explain but there was nothing to explain, she knew this would happen so what’s with her now? ‘’Do you want to marry her?’’ she looked at him, just wanting to hear one word. ‘’I have to.’’ ‘’Yet, you didn’t answer my question.’’ ‘’I guess, I still don’t.’’ ‘’Harry, why are you marrying someone you don’t want to? It’s your life you decide. There’s always a second choice. And I know she is yours.’’ ‘’So what’s my first?’’ he knew he had no choice. Either way, in the end, he marries her and England unites with Spain, that’s his destiny. Always have been. ‘’Me, Harry, me. Please, I beg you, don’t marry her.’’ she was begging, her eyes could take it, but her heart no. ‘’Margaret, let me clear this up. I have to marry her, so my country, that I care, will have more power. I have to. It’s what it is. It’s my life, not my choices. They make them for me. You’re just a simple maid nothing more. I will be king, and I need by my side a queen. Not to love her but to rule with her.’’ he said with an emotion that wasn’t angry but neither sad, maybe disappointed probably. ‘’You’re choosing her over me?’’ she was angry she was, she had spent years loving him even though she knew it would never happen, she loved him, and she hoped he loved her. ‘’Not my choice.’’ Harry’s answer was also his final one. Margaret was a nice girl, but she didn’t want to be a fool, she didn’t. ‘’As I said before your Majesty,’’ her mood had completely changed ‘’there’s a letter for you.’’ she gave him the letter, and before he could even speak she stormed out of the room, shutting the door behind her.

As soon as Margaret vanished, Anne appeared. ‘’What’s going on, son?’’ she asked a little bit anxious seeing that her son had kind of turned into pale. ‘’Ugh, a letter came. That.’’ he replied, still sitting on his chair. ‘’What does it say? Is it from Catherine in Spain? When are they sending their daughter? Everything must be perfect, for a princess like her. A queen!’’ Anne seemed to really like the idea of Harry becoming a king, marrying a queen, and England becoming more powerful. Who wouldn’t actually? ‘’I-I still haven’t read it, mother. Let me open it.’’ he did as he said, and even though he didn’t read the letter out loud, Anne already knew that he would confirm her thoughts. ‘’So?’’ she asked, really nervous. ‘’2 days and she’ll be here.’’ Harry said, almost sounded like he wanted to cry. ‘’Great! We have to make everything look great. Harry, you have to look great.’’ ‘’And I will-’’ ‘’Everything Harry! Everything. She will marry you! She holds your whole future! Our future! Your heir! So be careful, please. We need this, we need her.’’ ‘’Yes mother.’’ he said as she left. He really didn’t know what was he supposed to do. But now, he wondered a little bit about her. How does she look? How does she act? What is she like?

Y/n’s carriage was already on its way to England. She had never been to England before so she was a little bit excited to visit the country. It was hard for her to say goodbye to Spain, but it’s her duty as a queen to leave. If only she could live the way she wanted to, things could have been much easier. It was time she arrived at the castle. Everything looked good. Perfect, just like Anne had wanted to. Everyone was waiting for her, the stuff, the royals, everyone. Everyone except Harry. He was still inside, in his room. Only this time he was looking through his window. To admit, this made Anne sort of furious, but in the end, the outcome will be the same, so she didn’t give much attention. Everyone stared as Y/n was stepping out of her carriage. Some people helped her and her ladies, by bringing them closer to the castle. As she was walking by, you could see clearly that she was pure beauty. Her dress was a mix colour of dark orange to light brown and pastel yellow. Everyone wore those colours, and for a princess, those colours should be stunning while she wore them. You couldn’t see her shoes because her dress was so big, that covered most of the floor that surrounded her. She had a necklace full of diamonds, they were shining, she was shining. Her face though was the one that you could just stare forever and adore it. She had those big bambi eyes and that colour of her eyes that suited her perfectly. A big bright smile of her red lips was showing, and it was impressive being honest. Harry couldn’t help but look through his window, opening a little bit that curtain of his. He really admired her. He thought she was beautiful, very beautiful. But he also thought that being a king would be beautiful, surprisingly beautiful. So he went out, to greet her, as he should. As he was walking down, or maybe even running though the stairs, he bumped into Margaret. He just looked at her, and actually tried to say something but he didn’t he just left. He liked Maggie a lot, he did, but he would marry Y/n. He thought that Maggie was one of the many girls that he has fun with, spend his time, but always it comes to end, it usually ends after 2 weeks. Maggie had been with Harry though 2 years. But what’s two years with someone when you’re gonna spend a lifetime with someone else? As he stepped out of the huge door of the castle, he ran immediately to his parents, noticing that they were talking with Y/n. And when he came closer to her, he swore he had never seen a more beautiful girl like her. He felt like he just forgot everything about Maggie, but he didn’t because he was still feeling guilty. And as Harry was really frozen by just looking at her, Y/n was not. ‘’Your Highness’’ she said doing a small curtsey. He was out of words, at a loss of words and really he had no idea what to do. ‘’We-welcome to, ugh, England? Ugh, I, ugh..’’ he had no idea what he should say, and he really did not know why this was happening. ‘’Y/n.’’ she said, introducing herself. ‘’Harry. They call me Harry, it’s actually Henry Edward the 5th but you can call me Harry as well.’’ he sounded upset, yet he was everything but upset. ‘’Great.’’ she said, giving him one of her big smiles and continuing her talk with Anne, going inside the castle.

‘’What was that?’’ a man sounded and Harry turned around to look at him. ‘’What was what?’’ he replied looking at his father, king of England. ‘’You were mesmerized, she had you mesmerized. Got to admit it.’’ Henry smirked to Harry. ‘’What? No. Absolutely no. I just had to come and meet her. She will be my future wife won’t she, and she holds our future. You- you said it.’’ he tried to say clearly, but who was he trying to fool? ‘’Ugh, then, sure I believe you.’’ he said leaving back to the castle, to continue one of the many duties he has.

After a while, Harry was alone in his room per usual, writing. He likes to write a lot. He writes songs and poems, mostly. ‘’Do you want my opinion on her?’’ Maggie appeared from nowhere, but she appeared and she asked. Harry nodded. ‘’She doesn’t look like a queen.’’ she pouted her lips and confessed ‘’ more like a whore to me.’’ ‘’Hey!’’ Harry sightly yelled at her. ‘’You’ve known me for two years, Harry, I don’t get it. You can be king by yourself, why do you need to marry her?’’ her words sounded kind of bittersweet. ‘’I can do it by my own. England, though, can’t.’’ he added ‘’And a king always needs a queen, a real one Maggie. And as much as I care about you, I have to concede that in the end, you could not handle it. You can’t come through being a queen if it’s even achievable.’’ And he left.

Being honest, Harry had fun with Maggie. But that was it, just fun. He didn’t consider marrying her or having a life with her. Not because she was a maid, no. Simply because he knew she was incapable of being a good wife. At the end of the day, a girl like Margaret is just a simple girl, a maid who’s going to get married to a simple boy, but a girl like Y/n is a simple girl as well, who’s going to be queen and marry a simple boy, like Harry who’s going to be king.

Hi, jess! Since we’re talking about reality tv, I’d really like to know your opinion on sth that’s been the hot topic in my country these last couple of months. What do you think about people with mental disorders participating in reality shows? I’m currently watching a (now popular - because of the pandemic) reality show called “a fazenda” (the farm). It’s a bit like big brother, but with somewhat famous people (a couple of big celebrities + lots of b-c listers) having to deal with farm duties, like taking care of cows, chickens, etc. It’s wonderful, kinda trashy and I love it! The network that streams the show is very shady (it supported bolsonaro) and it clearly doesn’t know or care about how to approach delicate subjects. Here’s the thing: one of the participants has borderline - the show hasn’t disclosed this info, the audience found out by googling her after she had her first major fight on the show (she has a highlight on her ig in which she talks about being borderline). The discussion we’re having: is the network exploiting her by using her mental disorder as entertainment? Should they release an official statement about it to avoid public misconceptions about her? The participants who aren’t her friends have said incredibly prejudiced things about her, suggesting she likes being “crazy”, “retarded” and “not normal” because this supposedly “helps her get extra tv time” - this is infuriating because she’s clearly in pain when they provoke her. These horribly ignorant people even found out how to triger her and are actively using this to try to make her physically attack them, which would lead to her being expelled. From what the audience can gather from short clips now and there, she’s taking her meds as usual and is being assisted by a psychologist (at least!). Personally I don’t think there’s a problem with having a person with a mental disorder on a reality show, because she has the right to participate and shouldn’t be discriminated because of it - but as long as the show doesn’t exploit her and approach the subject responsibly. The silver lining is that I’m seeing LOTS of people supporting her on social media and completely disagreeing with the other participants’ behavior - her public approval is much bigger than theirs; the admin who’s taking care of her social media during this period has been posting about the subject and invited a psychologist to talk about it and answer a q&a sent by followers. Anyway sorry for the huge text! I really value your opinion and would love to know your insights

Hey :) Well thank you for asking for my opinion, that’s always sweet! We had The Farm here ages ago, I never watched it but I remember it making tabloid headlines because one of the celebrity contestants “stimulated” a pig. 

Well firstly I don’t think a mental illness should disqualify anyone right off the bat. Different conditions will have different challenges, different people with the same diagnosis will present differently, and different reality shows will bring out different challenges - like it would be different to be on something like Bake Off which is generally supportive and you can go home and be with your family in between challenges versus Love Island which is a show here largely based on attractive people getting off with each other so there’s a lot of tabloid attention, a lot of pressure to look a certain way and they’re all cooped up with no contact with the outside world for weeks and often plied with alcohol. There’s also a difference between having a diagnosis and actually still displaying symptoms at a clinical level. Lots of people with BPD like me show less symptoms as they get older until they’re sub clinical but they may still be branded with the diagnosis by others or feel they want to keep it themselves. And even someone like me who very much still deals with their condition on an active basis, I still have legal competence to make my own decisions and it’s infantilising to suggest a diagnosis of a mental illness automatically disqualifies you. So as much as possible it needs to be an individualised process to decide and the reality show needs to be honest about what it will entail. I don’t know about over there but we have psychiatric evaluations for our reality shows. I don’t know how good these are but if they are robust and informed by people with the specific conditions then I think these can be a good way of deciding if someone can actually handle the specific challenges of that show. One evaluation is not going to work for everyone, it needs to be someone with specific expertise in that condition. 

If someone with a mental illness is accepted on the show then something that’s missed out a lot in the UK and probably elsewhere is the care during and after the show. Firstly they should have a specialist on hand who can identify when the contestant is having a more difficult time and if it’s necessary to have private, off camera check ins with them about their mental health. And for BPD and other severe conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar these people can’t just be psychologists. Being a psychologist doesn’t mean you have the knowledge to deal with the specific condition. There have been some suicides of reality show contestants over the last few years here and a lot of blame has been pointed at the producers and studios for not supporting people when they leave the show and are suddenly famous. There should be a clear care plan that is specific to their needs and the producers and studios need to commit to ensuring that the level of care provided is fit for purpose. Sending an email with the name of a psychologist with general expertise is not enough. Some people may require regular sessions with people with specific qualifications and they need to be willing to commit to that for the safety of their participants.

I also think when it comes to the point around disclosure, nothing should ever be confirmed without the person’s explicit consent and them being able to approve any wording about it. Even if they’ve talked about it openly prior to going on the show, it would be exploitative to me to release a statement about a contestant’s specific health issues without first checking with them. If they do feel that the way things are being portrayed could negatively impact her long term health then I think they have a duty to raise it with her even if the show is ongoing and decide if she would be happy for it to be shared. If it is, I think the tv channel or whoever is releasing the statement should accompany it with links to support services and helplines and should invest time in promoting resources which explain BPD - or the condition the person has - and humanises people so that the bigoted views being spouted on the show are not able to go unchallenged. I’m really glad to hear the person managing her social media is using the opportunity to share info and that people are responding well to it. If the show does ever acknowledge it then I think they would have a responsibility to participate in those efforts, it shouldn’t be down to her team alone.

I've never made a drama rec list before! :o I don’t know how good I will be at explaining why they’re my favorite ( .__.;; ), but I’ll try putting one together!! ♥♥ (Basically anything recent you’ve seen on the dash is bc I’m following cast of The Untamed around (for cdramas) XD and also going back to watch dramas I wanted to but never got around to (for kdramas))

I’ve only watched a few cdramas when I was little (My Fair Princess, mainly, but there were some others I can’t remember the names of), but as I grew older I fell into the jdramas (Gokusen & Trick --> basically Namaka Yukie) hole, and then into the world of kpop/kdramas. Every now and then I would bounce back in, like with Fahrenheit and the X-Family/K.O. Series but I always went back around to kdrama and kpop, bc I always thought that cdramas were SO LONG. :p AND THEN THE UNTAMED CAME ALONG. And then I realized actually how EASY it was to watch cdramas. Hop onto YT and you’re pretty much set. You don’t have to wait around for months for them to finish bc they upload so many episodes a week!!! (Except it kinda sucks if you’re waiting for subs, bc.. cdramas... don’t... often... get... subbed?? Are there too many? [Good thing I don’t really need them. (･θ･)]) Right now, I’m pretty new to the world of cdrama and only really follow The Untamed cast and some others (Zhang Mingen, Luo Zheng (my Idol Producer son)) around, so this is gonna be short. XD

Ok, this is three different dramas, but they’re set in the same universe (kina? L&D is a little weird.), so I can lump them together, right? XD Three Lives, Three Worlds will infuriate you, but in a good (?) way. By nature of the format of this series, you may find the set-up is the same each time (immortal falls in love-immortal descends to the human realm for mortal trials-immortal reascends, badass as all hell (not necessarily in that order)), but each story is still new and captivating and heartbreaking. There’s always going to be THAT ONE CHARACTER (`•̀益•́´) but if I don’t hate them, they didn’t do their job right, right? I liked Pillow Book the best, but maybe that’s because it’s the one I started with? Pretty sure all are available on yt, but the subs may be spotty. I think PB is the only one with complete subs (thanks, Tencent). Eternal Love (TMOPB) is on Netflix (at least on mine) and I think VIKI also has both Eternal Love (TMOPB) and Love and Destiny. 

The Love by Hypnotic

THIS!!! I found this drama really cute. It’s a mix of serious and moments of humor. The prince has some memory... problems (TRAUMA), and it just so happens he is in an arranged marriage to a princess, who can use hypnosis to help him regain his memories. They don’t exactly see eye-to-eye at first, but they never do, do they? (¬‿¬) [It’s on YT] Also!! The OST is good!

Lee Jongsuk. Kim Woobin. That’s it. Ok, ok. They aren’t the WHOLE focus of the show, there are other kids in the class who need help as well, but the bromance of this drama continues to haunt me to this day. There are the common themes you see in any school drama..(bullying, cheating, STRESS, inability to handle the stress (tw: suicidal intention)) those were some darker times, but in the end it’s all about friendship.

151. Sonic the Hedgehog #85

The Big Payback

So Eggman is quite peeved that Sonic stopped his plans to destroy Station Square via ancient water monster. However, he has a plan to get back at Sonic - and as with many of his previous plans, it involves a robotic duplicate of his archnemesis…

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters are in Station Square, which is in the midst of trying to clean up the mess left by the attack, being thanked and awarded by the mayor for saving their city. Suddenly, the ceremony is interrupted by the appearance of Silver Sonic II, which is significantly smaller in size than its original counterpart.

Sonic leads his robotic nemesis on a wild goose chase across the city to draw fire away from the innocents at the ceremony. Big snags Silver Sonic II's leg with his fishing rod, and Tails tries to attack it while it's stuck, but he gets knocked aside into Big as the mecha breaks free and continues its pursuit of its quarry. Sonic and it finally crash through a window into the ground level of a building that's been structurally compromised by the flood, something Silver Sonic II uses to its advantage.

The building falls on top of them both, and Eggman, watching from his base, cackles, knowing that Silver Sonic II is sturdy enough to survive such an impact. The Freedom Fighters desperately dig into the rubble only to find a hole in the ground beneath it, indicating that Sonic dug his way to safety through the ground. As he pops back out and continues to fight the robot, Nicole, Sally and Nate try to discern its potential weaknesses.

Damn, if Eggman somehow found an infinite power supply, why did he waste it on one measly little robot? You'd think he'd insert that into an Ultimate Annihilator Mk. II or something and get to work erasing existence. Sonic is shaken free from Silver Sonic II midair, and when Tails catches him, Silver Sonic II straight up jettisons his own foot into Tails' head as payback. Sonic becomes enraged at seeing his friend knocked out by the long-range kick, and this gives him enough strength to deal the final blow against his foe.

What indeed? Eggman certainly doesn't seem too fazed by Silver Sonic II's loss, as he installed a homing beacon in it for this very possibility, and intends to simply wait until the Freedom Fighters leave the city unattended and then waltz in to fix up his robot and get to conquerin'. However, the Freedom Fighters certainly don't seem too worried, leaving the city after saying goodbye to Big, who's heading back to the Mysterious Cat Country with Froggy in tow, and they hop in their aircraft only for it to immediately begin to careen out of control.

Sally orders Sonic and Tails to do some reconnaissance for signs of life nearby (why, I have no idea - they crashed like not even a mile from Station Square from the looks of it), and shoots Amy down when she tries to ask to go along. Nate, inspecting the damage, finds it to be the result of sabotage, and while he worries about who may have done it (the idea that it may have been, you know, Eggman, or the robot they were just fighting, doesn't seem to cross his mind), Eggman himself waltzes straight into the city like he didn't just try to murder everyone in it. Somehow he doesn't get immediately arrested on the street, and instead he finds his robot as planned - only Silver Sonic II is already repaired, and has been reprogrammed by Nate to serve as Station Square's loyal protector from now on! That's actually some damn good thinking on his part. Amusingly, Eggman races out with his former creation on his heels while shouting that "Payback is such a glitch!" which is maybe the closest this comic has come to actually swearing so far.

Writer: Karl Bollers Pencils/Colors: Diamond Rose Studios

The art in this issue is really bizarre, for some reason - it's credited in its entirety to "Diamond Rose Studios," without elaborating on who actually worked on what, and the art style, particularly the shading, is pretty noticeably different from the style of other artists for the comic. If anything, it comes across much more like amateur work you might find on DeviantArt rather than official art for a licensed video game comic. But hey, it's not bad art, so no real problem here. Oh, and Rotor's finally back! It's been so long since we've seen him… *checks back* twenty-four issues, in fact! We unfortunately find him now in a nasty predicament - his bathysphere is taking on water fast, and he's not having any success radioing for help. He thinks back on how his last few months have been - shortly after he left to find his family, he indeed found them safe and sound with the help of the Arctic Freedom Fighters.

This issue seems to take place just shortly after Eggman's return, because Rotor recounts how just recently his family all fell under the mind control spell again, once more trying to kill him and forcing him to run for his life in his bathysphere, which was then damaged, leaving him stranded in his current predicament. Honestly, I have to point out right now that the timeline of these early eras is aaaall over the place. Issues are constantly throwing out random amounts of time, claiming that X amount of months have passed between this event and that event, only to claim a different amount of time between similar events over here and there. I mean, I got the initial impression that Robotnik had only died a maximum of maybe five months before Eggman's arrival, and yet here Rotor is claiming it had been nearly a year? Then on top of that he apparently spent months hanging out with his family in the North Sea, easily making it over a year since Robotnik's death - and yet the timeline of StH#72 and beyond clearly indicates that mere days passed in between his leaving and Eggman's return, yet here he is, claiming to have spent months with his family unmarred by any negative circumstances. Even if you argue that maybe the mind control was a delayed effect and only started back up right around now during the Chaos fiasco, the early issues of this era seem to indicate that not more than a few weeks have passed between Eggman's arrival and the Sonic Adventure adaption - this is his first evil world domination plot since his return, after all. What I'm saying is that the amounts of time that various issues claim have passed between most of these key events just don't line up with each other at all, so you really have to take any character's claim of months or years between events with a gigantic grain of salt. I don't know why they didn't put more effort into maintaining a consistent "schedule" if you will of events, if only for consistency's sake, but then again this bothers me probably more than most, just because I have a strong need for narrative consistency in my own stories. It's just another one of those odd plot holes that we kind of have to ignore to get anywhere.

Rotor, having finished with his chronologically-impossible recounting of previous events, realizes that the water leaking into his bathysphere is coming entirely too close to a mass of live wires, and makes the decision to abandon ship, preferring to risk a long swim back to the surface.

Well, at least these friendly fellas have got his back. Hopefully we'll see more of him back with the main Freedom Fighter chapter soon, because having him head off to find his family honestly felt like an excuse to just get rid of him as a character for a while, and I resent that, because Rotor is a big chubby bro and we deserve to see more of him being a badass sweetheart.

Rape c/w. The story is set around 16th/17th century, a homosexual man is captured and tortured for his "sins" by a group of religious fanatics (sth like the Spanish inquisition or the Sparrows from GoT). Would torturing a man by raping him anally with a glowing-hot metal bar could be in any way lethal? I suppose the damage the victim would suffer would definitely be permanent but could it kill a man?

Yeahthat would kill someone and in a pretty obvious way.

There’sbeen a rumour for hundreds of years that a member of the Britishroyal family was killed this way. And the historian’s rejection ofit pretty much boils down to the fact that it’s so obvious anyoneviewing the body would have noticed.

Essentiallyglowing hot metal is very very hot indeed and having an anus ispretty essential to being able to continue digesting things.

Nowwhen metal this hot makes brief skin contact you get a very seriousburn and a permanent scar; imagine a brand. But if your charactersare doing something like this then the contact isn’t brief, you’remeasuring that contact time in minutes not fractions of a second.

Andwhen that happens the flesh tends to stick to the hot metal object.This means when the object is removed the flesh is ripped away.

Whenthis happened in things like trial by ordeal you’d get a massiveinfection risk and huge scars. If victims survived it could result inthings like not being able to use a hand any more.

Butif you try to do that to the intestines- well it’s rather messier.The torturers would essentially be ripping out the character’sanus. He would no longer be able to defecate. He would get aninfection, because he’d have a massive bloody wound in a part ofthe body rife with bacteria. And he would die.

There’sa lot of blood, a lot of shit and a lot of bits of burnt flesh.There’s an obvious mess and an obvious smell.

WhenI talk about burning tortures I advise people to avoid the analregion because burns there can easily become lethal.

Nowthe easiest thing to do if you want the character to plausiblysurvive is to take away the branding aspect of this torture.

Ifyou want burns to be part of this scene target them elsewhere. Burnsaround the mouth, nose and genital reason can also be lethal becausepeople need to be able to breathe and pee. Burns around the joints,hands or feet can result in permanent disability. Large enough burnscan restrict mobility or just straight up cause death. I tend torecommend authors write burns being no larger than the character’spalm and spaced out over their skin.

Ithink the closest thing you could do to this scene while keeping thecharacter alive is have the torturers heat the poker and thenblindfold the character. They could burn multiple parts of his bodyand then rape him with the poker once it is cool. The character couldeasily still believe that the poker would be hot and that he is goingto die.

Moregenerally-

Youdidn’t give me a country, just a time period. From the examplesyou’ve given it’s clear this is based on somewhere in Europe.

NowI can’t speak for much beyond Britain during the time period youmentioned but you do realise that England and Scotland were ruled bya gay man for much of this period? (‘Rex fuit Elizabeth, nunc estregina Iacobus- Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen.’Additionally James built a secret passage connecting his bedroom tothat of his male favourite’s and multiple sources from the timeassume they were having sex.).

Therewere extremely homophobic laws on the books but they do not appear tohave been in regular use. When people were put on trial forhomosexuality they weren’t generally sentenced to this sort ofdebilitating physical punishment or execution.

Thekinds of torture you’re describing would be highly unusual inBritain in this time period and had gone out of favour in much ofEurope during this time as well. This seems more in keeping with the‘typical’ atrocities from 200-300 years before.

Nowyou might not have a particular place in mind for your story and thesetting may only be loosely based on European history. There’snothing wrong with that.

Therewere also- areas of Europe that handed down harsher penalties forhomosexuality. Though it should be noted that ‘sodomy’ charges atthe time generally included more than consensual, adult,homosexual relationships. At thetime sodomy could also refer to bestiality, child abuse andhomosexual rape. Without going over court records it’s difficult tobreak down the proportions of these different acts within a general‘sodomy’ charge.

TheSpanish Inquisition associated homosexuality with ‘heresy’, or atleast non-Catholic religion. And that’s important because it meansthat the torture of gay and bisexual people by the Inquisitionprobably wasn’t primarily aimed at getting them to renounce theirsexuality. Like the targetting of racial and ethnic minorities it wasprobably aimed at ‘discovering’ religious heresy.

WhatI’m getting at here is that if you’re aiming for a story that’smore or less historically accurate then I think you should make somechanges.

Ifyou’re not then I still think it would be worth thinking about thesetting and the motivationsof the torturers.

Itis definitelyrealistic to have torturers attacking a character’s sexuality andrape with objects seems to be more common when the victim is a cisman. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the victim is being tortured‘for’ being queer.

Sexualityis a target torturers take aim at whenever they can. In the same waythat they target disability and gender identity to humiliate and hurttheir victims. But there’s nothing unrealistic about having yourcharacter arrested and tortured on a different charge.Religious groups are and were primarily interested in religiousindiscretion. And in Europe generally during this period that meanscharges like heresy or treason were more likely to result in torturethen a charge of sodomy alone.

Asa final note- just because you’re basing a story on a time periodthat was incredibly homophobic doesn’t mean you’re obliged tokeep homophobic elements in the story. There is nothing wrong withchoosing to keep those elements either if you want to. But you’renot obligated to.

That’s totally okay, honey! I get it since I was busy as hell myself. I hoped to write a ficlet but all I managed yesterday was collapse into bed at 1am. I have yet to clean up the mess gift wrapping left behind... 

And since we are in different timezones, it’s honestly no problem. You’re in US? 

Tater tots seem a bit weird. I thought they were a bit like fast food? But I may be wrong. They always were this weird thing I didn’t understand in the movies xD I mean, they come from bags. We have sth a bit similar, like potato pancakes but we usually just make them ourselves. (usually meaning every week in my house xD)

So, get ready for a wild ride because as you probably already figured, I tend to ramble.

Okay, Christmas meals in Poland. We are very traditional here. Most festive celebration is Christmas Eve dinner eaten in the evening, which traditionally should have 12 different dishes. 

The most traditional ones that have to appear are:

1. Barszcz - beetroot soup, clear and a beautiful transparent red (opposed to every day version with cream we eat all year round), eaten with “Uszka” (direct translation - “little ears”) which is a type of “pierogi” folded into half, a traditional polish dumpling, either with mushrooms or mushrooms and pickled cabbage filling. Sometimes also comes with white beans instead of or besides dumplings.

2. Fish soup or mushroom soup with croutons.

3. Carp. Fish is important and carp is literally only sold around Christmas. Some people even buy them live and keep in the tub until preparing dinner comes... No, thank you. Fillet for me.

4. Fried pickled cabbage with peas or lentils. Can also feature mushrooms. (A lot of people put mushrooms into a lot of things, my grandma and brother are allergic so not in our house)

5. Traditional dried fruit brew. 

The other ones vary from region to region. For example a lot of people, usually a bit further north, make poppy seeds dumplings or sweet wheat dessert pudding, but it’s not something popular in the mountains where I’m from. 

But also, the usual 12 dishes is done like.... Soup, one. Dumplings in the soup, two. XD We count very... liberally to achieve the 12 xD 

But I think honestly, most of our Christmas meals may come as weird to other countries because they are deeply traditional polish/slavic cuisine. 

That, and we have a tradition of breaking Christmas wafers when wishing each other and later sometimes eating them with honey (if there is any wafers left).

This looks like a description of my ESTP boss and friends. Same social and planning stuff but very different topics of interest. Isn't Ne random data, connecting the dots and creating patterns? Apart from watching historical documentaries, the other stuff like carrot flute, playing in a band, cooking, fixing a gutter, etc seems more like physical, body, Se stuff. Why would be the point of doing that except when we definitely need to learn it, like for fixing sth?

Hey! 

Yeah so honestly, the Ne can be about body... anything really. Typically, I find the skills we pick up are simply for acquiring a new skill when it interests us-- and the interests may come from like, seeing someone else do it in real life or on TV. So it’s not often about being more healthy, and instead about learning the trade just enough before moving on to a new interest. So the difference is that the Ne is taking in the external cues to understand them, and the Se is taking in the external cues to react to them. 

For example, I don’t really like cooking for myself. I know I should because health and eating and all that is important, but most of the time I can eat a row of oreos and call it a meal. However, I got super into The Great British Bakeoff and then I taught myself how to bake and now I’m great at it. I only get the urge to bake again after watching a baking show or seeing a cool pic on a blog, but I’m actually a really good baker. It’s not about making myself baked goods for nourishment (which, debatable); but instead, it’s about the fact that baking is an art that I want to (kinda) master. Same with cooking, I got into this documentary called Ugly Delicious and I learned how to cook some really cool stuff-- but again, it’s not about health or taking care of myself, it’s about the act of cooking and understanding it. 

On the surface Ne can be mistaken with Se, but Se is more about the ability to immediately react and physical impulses. When things happen, those with an active Se can interpret, absorb, and respond to external cues and context. Whether or not it’s just making food for oneself upon hunger or capitalizing on a romantic moment or quickly deciding to travel to another country, ESTPs (if you ask me) are a little bit better at acting when they want something-- even if they don’t understand why they wanted it until later. 

ENTPs are much more cautious and have to think things through before following even the biggest events(aka overthinking). Once, I got my fingers crushed in a garage because we were putting it down by hand and my fingers were in the cracks, and I was quiet because I thought that if I yelled or overreacted, the people pulling the garage down would freak out, making it worse--- I was like 10 at the time, and genuinely, my natural response here was to think and not react. 

So the Ne can pertain to learning things that may promote health, but it’s not about health... if that makes sense. One thing about my cooking ventures is that I will skip meals to prepare the most extra desserts... I will be on my feet all day making sure my black forest gateau is perfectly frosted. It’s not about fulfilling my hunger as much as it’s about the understanding of the action.

This is actually why ENTPs often think they’re ESTPs and vice versa though!

when i was in high school i never ever typed any notes. handwriting is super good cause it helps u remember better what ur writing, and it’s easier to adapt to what u need ur notes to look like. but then i started university and i had to summarize everything that happened in my country from 1860 to 2000 and i was like no, fuck it, i ain’t writing all that bc a) i wouldn’t have time and b) my hand would probably fall off. so typing it saved my life and i learned some stuff and i have a few tips so u can make the most out of ur typed notes!

is it convenient to type?

things u need to think abt:

the context where u’ll be doing it, e.g. in class sometimes it’s actually faster to handwrite if the class is disorganized so u can draw arrows, connect stuff on different parts of the page, make margin notes, etc, but sometimes the teacher speaks really fast and u don’t have time to jot everything down so it’s better to type. if u have time to write down most of the important things i recommend to handwrite. if ur in ur house or library both methods work the same; if ur in a coffee shop or sth probably best to type cause it takes up less space

how much time until u have to study them, if you’re making summaries/guides. if u got lazy and left it to the last moment (happens to the best of us), u’ll be better off typing. ifffff u have the time and ur willing to maybe it’s best to handwrite them bc it helps w memorizing

the subject and what’s gonna be important for the exam, so u know how it’s better to study. when i make summaries and study guides i always mix my class notes and book or other material i have. before u start writing them, go over both and try to think what u want ur notes to look like, if it’s gonna be important for them to be visual, have lots of arrows (in that case, better to handwrite, but it can be done in a laptop, although it may end up taking u more time in the end), or if they’re gonna be lots of bullet points and outlines, charts, diagrams (it’s easier to type these)

this is just a pro of typing over handwriting: u’ll be able to go back and modify/add/delete stuff. so if ur gonna be making study guides super in advance and in class the teacher goes back to topics u already included, u can add more info all the time without ur notes looking like a clutter of post it notes and covered in margin notes

tips and tricks

use shortcuts and make ur own shortcuts to replace regular symbols with symbols u don’t have in ur keyboard per se. u may need a little poking around whichever app ur using, or u can add them to the keyboard “replace” feature. for example, for mine i made -> turn into ⇾, >> into ↳, ^^^ into ↓ (u can tell i use lots of arrows). don’t be afraid to experiment and look through the symbols in ur laptop to see what u’ll find useful!

lots of abbreviations, and this applies to handwritten notes also. i have this bad habit, though, of cutting short long words and then not remembering the conjugation and getting confused when i revise them, so be careful with that (for example, in sociology i used “intern.” for “internalization”, “internalize”, “internalizing” and then regretted it)

if u want ur notes to have colour but don’t wanna waste colour ink from ur printer, u can use highlighters or leave blank spaces to write titles and subtitles with a coloured pen when u print them. but don’t actually leave it blank; write the word in white so u’ll remember what u were supposed to write later. take into account that of course ur handwriting won’t be the same size as the font. this applies if u want cute calligraphy titles, banners, drawings, etc. u can decorate ur notes as much as u want when u print them!

make good use of fonts but don’t overdo it, have a main font for the body and maybe a different one for titles/subtitles if u want

have a system where u use bold, italics and underlined for different things (terms, examples, important definitions, dates, whatever)

be creative in the use of space! use shapes, charts, the diagram function of ur app, anything ur comfortable using and that’s gonna be useful (don’t put in diagrams just bc they look cool if the info in it isn’t really important). but, again, don’t overdo it cause it may end up taking u more time than it’s really worth it

this is gonna sound super millenial, but sometimes emojis r useful in notes (i know i know) to make them more visual. like u can replace a word with its emoji (hand, person, tree, idk), use it on the side to symbolize what ur talking about (i used a bomb next to a part where i was writing sth about WWII), etc. don’t judge me for this please

use an app to block websites and other apps that distract you because that’s the downside of writing on ur laptop: ur laptop is right there. i’ll list some apps on the next part

software + apps

google drive: i’m in love with this. v useful if ur gonna be writing from different devices without downloading anything. also it’s cool that u can download and easily use lots of font. buuuut it doesn’t have many functions. make sure to enable offline mode because otherwise anytime ur wifi acts up it won’t let u edit

evernote: again lets u sync ur notes in many devices but u need to download the app in all of them. personally i prefer google drive but that’s bc i never rlly tried to get used to this one, many people seem to rlly love it

ur laptop’s default text editor: usually microsoft word for windows, pages for mac. i used pages for my history and sociology notes because i knew i was gonna do everything in my own laptop and found it super useful. it’s rlly easy to make charts, shapes, diagrams, and it’s super simple in a good way. i vouch for microsoft word as well, it has a lot more functions but at the same time it can get more complicated.

first of all it's so nice to see that you're back & i hope you're feeling better? :) i really get that your friend wanted to leave, hamburg is just the worst and dresden is really such a beautiful city i understand your love for it well :) do you have any plans about going back to dresden? & berlin too since you said you want to? (pt3) for example i personally love hearing about good parts of the east bc it's always shown like hell on earth when it wasn't all bad really? and i don't think i ever noticed anything about our landscape but that might just be bc i didn't pay attention 😅 is there sth specific that stuck out to you? and off the top of my head the first difference that comes to my mind is how there is still a pay gap between east and west which is mindblowing to me, and then the general behaviour?

(pt4) like my english teacher was from baden-württemberg and he had really big problems adjusting to our general tone? like apparently people in the west are more open and easier to approach which i found really fascinating. and i mean we are pretty divided by language though that's not exactly a west/east conflict i mean sachsen and berlin have such different dialects too. oh & i meant west germany until 90 - that just feels like the history of a different country to me.

(pt5) & i definitely associate myself more w berlin than with germany which also feels so weird? oh that's so niice!! i love these pics :) i was so afraid you'd say that 😅 it's always been pfannkuchen to me, berliner just sounds fucking wrong (i do get your points about it i just can't accept it bc it feels so so wrong) i don't have a strong opinion about nutella tbh except for it's clearly not der nutella. you're so right about that. like it literally makes me cringe to hear 'der nutella'.

(pt6) that's so valid articles cause a lot of distress since they just don't make sense sometimes. and if you're infiltrating duden already please remove kaktusse as a plural of kaktus i would really appreciate it bc the fact that they put that in literally makes me want to claw my skin off. hope you can find it for free! and you should definitely rewatch hsm! i did that at the beginning of lockdown and it was amazing

thank you!! i am feeling a little better gradually getting there taking a big ol social media break really helped! also yes i’m DESPERATE to move back to dresden the issue is i dont know wtf i’d be able to do there? because of the way the education system is set up in germany like i studied (man had to change that to past tense cant believe i’m DONE) history and german here and in germany that would be part of lehramt but here its like? i can just do what i like? (w further qualifications) i can go and become a lawyer, i can work in government, i can literally do anything and in germany its so restricted that i dont know whether i could actually go over unless i’d already established myself in a career path? so i don’t know :( i really really want to move back but i’ll have to find a career that lets me do that first! and if i do move back (which i pray i can) i think i’ll probably live in dresden first because i miss it so much but i’ve always wanted to live in berlin since i was a teenager and fell in love w it the first time i visited so i would love to live there at some point too but dresden is my priority i’m just so besotted sjdfnjsdf also i live in london! best place on the planet not that i’m biased or antyhing 

omg honestly i MISS kika might just fuck around and watch sending mit der maus tomorrow for fun i wonder if christoph is still there he was my childhood icon sjkdnfksjdf also me too!! i find it so interesting on like a day to day level? like obviously there was the overarching political regime but i’m more interested in how that affected the everyday lives of citizens of both states? my masters thesis is (hopefully) gonna be about how hiv/aids was constructed in the public sphere through language in the east and west i.e. how the government, intellectuals, media, church etc used language to create an idea of hiv/aids and people with hiv/aids its kind of building on my bachelorarbeit but its super interesting to me! 

omg literally same i find it so reductive when people are like ossi bad haha like? yeah lets not act like hohenschönhausen was a cushy hotel but there was much more stability in some areas e.g. housing/jobs? honestly i think the attitudes towards foreigners and the right wing sympathy was the main thing that stood out to me but that was probably just dresden/saxony LMAO 

that’s so interesting? i didn’t know that! honestly all of you lot scare me because the stereotype about how direct the germans are is like...so true especially as a brit i cannot lie to you my FIRST day at work i was in a meeting and they were discussing ideas about how to teach a particular lesson and one teacher put forward an idea and another teacher straight up went ‘no that’s a bad idea that won’t work. we should think about something else’ i was literally like ?!?!??!?! thinking a fight was about to break out cos in the uk if someone offers an idea and someone thinks its bad theyll be like ‘thats an interesting idea! maybe we can incorporate some elements of that’ which means its shit dont mention it again and i went home and i told my mum (shes my german parent) and she said when she first came to the uk her boss came out to his secretary and said would you mind doing this? and she went home to my dad and was like WOW my boss is so polite he said ‘would you mind’ and my dad was like babes...that means ‘do this or else’ LMAO like we just have such different communication styles? also it was the first place that i’ve ever been met with confusion when someone bumps into me or steps on my foot and i apologise like in the uk thats just a given but people would bump into me and i’d be like schuldigung and they’d be like why are you sorry i bumped into you not the other way round? 

that’s interesting! would you call yourself a berliner before calling yourself a german or vice versa? i assume it would depend on who you’re talking to as well like to a foreigner maybe more likely to just say german? although everyone knows where berlin is

omg NO pfannkuchen is a prper pancake but i will accept it because you are from berlin so you have authority i genuinely never heard pfannkuchen mean anything other than what dresdeners call eierkuchen until i was in dresden THAT was a nasty surprise because i dont actually like berliner so i just had to politely eat this berliner when i was expecting crepes :’( 

oh god please the first thing i’md oing when i infiltrate duden is getting rid of cases and genders if english can make do without then so can german we do not need any of that nonsense i dont care whether its dative or accusative TERRIBLE whoever invented the german language should be fired also i’m FASCINATED that thats what you dont like what would you like the plural to be kakti? kakten? kaktüsse? i’m very intersted in this
