on my third rewatch and just got through ep 3 and man. the devlin house is such a strong fucking episode. like quality-wise. acting-wise. plot-wise. etc. that’s not to say the first two episodes weren’t strong, but the devlin house hits noticeably harder and hits different. like it’s the precise turning point episode where you realize oh. this show isn’t just gonna be campy with a dash of angst. we’re addressing some serious heavy ass trauma. and not just magical unreal trauma either like. just straight up abuse. and the boy who’s been unserious and silly this whole time isn’t just like that for shallow comic relief reasons. there is so much more there lurking under the surface. oh man it’s good

god what really gets me about dead boy detectives and what i think i love so much about the show and the relationships in it is that like. the romantic and sexual relationships aren't portrayed as being more unique or important than the platonic relationships. they're all just RELATIONSHIPS.

charles and crystal's attraction to each other and eventual hookup isn't this big end-all be-all relationship that shatter charles and edwin's friendship and draws charles' attention away from edwin; it's just a THING that happens. they're just two people that care about each other and happen to also be attracted to each other, and a hook-up happens, then they decide that neither of them are in the right place for it and it's nothing awful. crystal kisses charles, but it isn't some big spectacle of her declaring her love for him; it's just her saying goodbye and that she cares about him, like her hugs with niko and jenny and her handshake with edwin.

edwin realizes he loves charles romantically and tells him, and charles says he doesn't really love edwin romantically BACK, but it's okay, because they still love each other so much in so many other ways that this one tiny difference could never change them—and it doesn't!! they're still just as close, still care for each other just as much, still SHOW that care for each other just as much. their relationship didn't completely end because edwin loved charles in a way charles couldn't reciprocate, but at the same time it isn't "solved" by edwin getting over it, because there's nothing TO solve. it's just another type of love, added to everything that already exists between them. and they have LITERALLY FOREVER to figure out what it means.

the relationships between edwin & niko, crystal & niko, and crystal & edwin aren't given any less weight for being solely platonic, just as charles & crystal's relationship and edwin's feelings for charles aren't given (that much) MORE weight for being romantic. crystal and charles' conflict in the closet is about EDWIN, about how they're BOTH his friend and BOTH want to get him back; it has very little to do with the feelings between THEM, romantic or otherwise. similarly, the weight of charles' and edwin's relationship isn't diminished in the LEAST by charles not reciprocating the romantic side of his feelings (or SAYING he doesn't reciprocate, at least—we can all argue about the legitimacy of that in the notes).

i'm sure there are more examples than this, as well as probably some examples that CONTRADICT this, but like... by and large, it feels like dead boy detectives is a show where all the relationships are given equal weight regardless of platonic, sexual, romantic, or familial status, and as someone on both the asexual and aromantic spectrums who has struggled time and time again with shows casting out the importance of all other relationships in favor of prioritizing romance, that is INCREDIBLY refreshing to see.

Sometimes I laugh when I think back to that post an anti made on twitter a while back, claiming that Wang Zhuocheng was a bad actor because he conveyed too many emotions through his performance and as such mischaracterised Jiang Cheng (you know.. the character that went on a fucking rollercoaster of emotions throughout the story..)..

What they really mean is that they felt something watching his performance and refuse to accept that he's a great actor playing an equally great role and they're just mad that he played it so well that they actually sympathised with the character. 😊

and no, this is not a joke. Misha, through GISH especially, showed me not just the power of art-as-activism, but what creative modes function best in that setting, and how to organize and lead such efforts.

but I'm so happy I know how to do it. I've become a leader in my community, and a supporter of large and powerful movements.

specifically, those spaces know me as an artist. an artist with endless and diverse creative ideas, who knows no fear, takes no shit and is especially good at resistance and point-making via "funny" and lighthearted art.

So these are like the communications between them between episodes. About that episode’s events but in their perspectives and how it affects them. Great idea!

I always wondered just how long that period of estrangement was between them when Nicole got exposed for opening Waverly’s DNA test and not telling her that she had it all along. Like between the spa date with Rosita and that whole thing with Tucker and his “siblings”, how long did they go with not speaking to each other? Or rather Waverly not responding to Nicole’s attempts to talk. Very interesting how they used the calendar to show this.

I love how easily Dom and Kat slip into their characters even when they’re not professionally being filmed. It was obviously a thing they thought of to do for fans.

A very creative idea to show what happens between them behind the scenes of the show. Love it! 👍👏❤️

Also did it even come up in the show that Wyatt Earp founded Black Badge with President Roosevelt or did they just make that up for these case files? Because if so, that’s fucking genius! Because Black Badge is supposed to be “government operated���, right? So of course, the leader of law enforcement of Purgatory at that time would have something to do with BBD. And so would the President if it was really that prestigious. And they’re supposed to be slowly unravelling that Wyatt really wasn’t the hero everyone thought he was. So adding this into the plot continuity is very clever!

It’s like I said before. Sometimes the writing for the plot is so fucking spot on that it’s barely missing anything. And then other times it’s such a fucking mess that there’s plot holes all over the place. And these two are like… “We’ll fix this shit ourselves.”

Plot continuity. Narrative continuity. Massive deal.

HEY CRIMES ANONNN🫶 sooo cha woongki is an idol who I first met as a member of TOO (later re-debuted as TO1 after contract issues with their companies) but then was removed from TO1 along with other members minsu and jerome, the three of whom were the most feminine of the group and helped the group get popular by covering gg songs and generally being very queer friendly... and they were replaced with more masculine members ... definitely just a coincidence there... not at all femmephobia... but anyway woongki has always had a solo following because of his personality and how queer friendly he is (and his following increased after joining boysplanet) but he's struggled to re-debut a lot (has just entered his third survival show) and struggled to get signed to a company that actually has his best interest. But he is extremely popular for an idol who hasn't been able to debut so lots of us are waiting for it to finally happen so he can finally get some stability 🫶 and here's hybe staff calling him a slur that means femme in an official document. Like hybe need to die anyway but it's truly just so disrespectful to call an individual that as a way to sum up their character. They call him slurs for having a feminine personality but then are like hmm 🤔 he is a super popular entertainment personality we could take notes🤔 and wakeone kicking him out of the group for being femme even tho he's the most popular member and FOR A REASON. He's So entertaining he is So talented, he has been able to stay relevant and get gigs without a company, he organised his own fanmeets without a company and sold them out .. he's respected by established idols as an equal in the industry.... he's just So So capable and has just been fucked over by homophobic/femmephobic companies left right and centre.
