anyways i also need to introduce everyone to meatball !!

meatball is a short-ish, chunky, battle-scarred french bulldog mix — probably mixed with a pitbull, according to the vet. he’s not a purebred by any means, but he’s built like a little tank, with a broad chest, stubby legs, and a face that always looks slightly grumpy (but in a lovable way). his ears are lopsided — one stands up, the other flops down like it gave up halfway through life. his fur is short, and you can tell it used to be patchy in some spots (probably from rough living before eli found him).

despite his permanently annoyed expression, meatball is a ride-or-die companion. he waddles after eli like a tiny bodyguard, hates most people, but adores eli in an almost embarrassing way. he snores like a chainsaw, eats like he’s in a constant state of emergency, and has the energy of an old man who’s been through too much but still fights pigeons for fun.

eli wasn’t looking for a dog — he barely knew how to take care of himself. but one night, while walking home from a bar (half-drunk, cigarette between his fingers, music blasting through his headphones), he saw something small and pathetic shivering under a dumpster. a tiny, scrappy-looking bulldog mix with one ear flopped wrong and the saddest eyes he’d ever seen. it was raining. of course, it was raining. because fate has a sick sense of humor.

he tried to walk away. tried. but the damn dog wobbled after him on shaky legs, slipping on the wet pavement, determined. and eli — hungover, exhausted, still fighting demons from his kane days — sighed, crouched down, and mumbled, “you’re a stubborn little bastard, huh?” the dog sneezed. and that was it. that’s how eli ended up carrying a damp, shivering mess of a dog into his apartment, swearing at himself the whole way.

as for the name? it just happened. he tossed the dog some leftover meatballs from his fridge (because what else did he have?), and the little gremlin devoured them in seconds, looking up at him like he’d just performed a miracle. eli, watching this chunky, ridiculous creature with a weirdly human stare, just blurted out: “meatball.” and the dog wagged its tail. that was the first time eli had made someone happy in a long time. so, the name stuck. meatball was home.
