#I love theater

guys how are we coping this has been such a crazy week for debuts and swings and understudy changes. i literally feel like ive been buzzing with excitement all week and i havent even seen the show im just so excited for every actor on that stage getting to debut new tracks and everyone else getting to experience new shows every night

like. god this is so exciting to witness!!!! all the actors always talk about how fun the shows are when new people are in new tracks and so i know theyve been having so much fun this past week. experiencing new people's takes and choices and supporting them through every change and challenge of learning and performing new tracks

Being a non-theater kid and being friends with a theater kid must be crazy, because imagine having to walk on eggshells with words just so you don't accidently trigger them into breaking into song like

Like imagine saying "I hate this" and then someone screams at you "IT IS ALL A WASTE— OH YOU'RE GONNA BLAME ME YOU HAVE PAINTINGS OF DICKS! DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT TASTE!"

Or accidently saying the word beautiful and having to sit through eight minutes of pure teenage angst

Or handing them a ten dollar bill and they start rapping about some founding father guy?

Or every time you go to a 7/11 they manage to sing a different song related to it everytime

So, for all the non-theater kids who are friends with theater kids:

Whatever you say, don't mention Japan, or New Jersey, or Henry VIII, or popularity, or windows, or Post-war France, or Nancy Regan, or slushies, or the Greek gods...

Or do mention that. We are more than happy to sing.

We all know Otto doesn't understand literature, so what if that extends to theater as well? Sure he still appreciates a good book or good production but he struggles to get those deeper meanings and know what is really said. He admits so to Rosie and even says it's harder then quantum physics to him. Which is why now I picture him with a partner that loves acting and all things theater

Helping them run lines late into the night, telling them if they are giving to much or too little

He has to help his s/o learn blocking or choreographing with his actuators getting way more into then he is

Then comes the night of the performance!!!

He doesn't know half of what's going on but damn it! You're in it, you're killing it (possibly literally depending on your role), and he's going to be the first one you see when it comes to opening the backstage door!

Heaven forbid someone has poor manners to, he'll get them out of the seats and into the lobby without having to even get up from his seat/miss a scene

Oh and going to watch a performance together!? Again doesn't really know what's happening but oh your so happy so he's so happy

Will probably watch you watching it more then he'll watch it himself

He eventually gets super into musicals and plays himself to though even if without your help

We can't have that video of Alfred singing rich man and the puppeteers helping create the beat and NOT have Otto be a theater nerd I mean COME ON!

Another reason I think he'll love fiddler on the roof most of all

Oh if it's anything to do with Shakespeare have fun translating for him, he'll be a lil shocked when he realizes just how much of that text is dirty jokes to

The look on his face is priceless

Either way, when you two have the day off or ate feeling extra goofy you end up singing theater melodies or reciting scenes you two especially love doesn't matter if you can't sing or forget some words because it's him and you and the actuators

i love these kind of productions. My favorite metamorphosis prod had the top half of the stage set sideways so it was looking in and then gregor was played by just a dude so there was an extra surreal layer of him doing wild acrobatics to maintain 'normal' walking on the split stage while everyone reacted like he was a bug

cant talk rn obsessed over the design concept of this 2017 production of pinocchio as a stage play where pinocchio is the only character played by a human actor and the rest of the cast are portrayed as puppets ,,,

the public reaction to i saw the tv glow is like a perfect case study into how cis people take up queer spaces and unknowingly mock and enjoy trans suffering. sitting in the theater, i had a pit in my stomach the entire time. so many times, i would tear up and then someone else in the theater would laugh. and i wouldn’t cry because how would they look at me when the lights came back on? because they don’t see it. they don’t see the pain. they think it’s funny. i left the theater completely silent, not saying a word to my boyfriend and he didn’t say a word to me until partway into the drive home. the people around us immediately got to picking it apart, explaining what it all meant to each other, dumbing it down, making theories. cis people see the the movie, just like transness, as something to debate. a conversation. something to dissect because it makes them uncomfortable if they don’t understand it in their easily digestible way.
