Cross-posting an essay I wrote for my Patreon since the post is free and open to the public.
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! I hope you're relaxing as best you can this holiday season. I recently went to see Miyazaki's latest Ghibli movie, The Boy and the Heron, and I had some thoughts about it. If you're into art historical allusions and gently cranky opinions, please enjoy. I've attached a downloadable PDF in the Patreon post if you'd prefer to read it that way. Apologies for the formatting of the endnotes! Patreon's text posting does not allow for superscripts, which means all my notations are in awkward parentheses. Please note that this writing contains some mild spoilers for The Boy and the Heron.
Tumblr media
Hayao Miyazaki’s 2023 feature animated film The Boy and the Heron reads as an extended meditation on grief and legacy. The Master of a grand tower seeks a descendant to carry on his maddening duty, balancing toy blocks of magical stone upon which the entire fabric of his little pocket of reality rests. The world’s foundations are frail and fleeting, and can pass away into the cold void of space should he neglect to maintain this task. The Master’s desire to pass the torch undergirds much of the film’s narrative.

(Isle of the Dead. Arnold Böcklin. 1880. Oil on Canvas. Kunstmuseum. Basel, Switzerland.)
Arnold Böcklin, a Swiss Symbolist(1) painter, was born on October 16 in 1827, the same year the Swiss Evangelical Reformed Church bought a plot of land in Florence from the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II, that had long been used for the burials of Protestants around Florence. It is colloquially known as The English Cemetery, so called because it was the resting place of many Anglophones and Protestants around Tuscany, and Böcklin frequented this cemetery—his workshop was adjacent and his infant daughter Maria was buried there. In 1880, he drew inspiration from the cemetery, a lone plot of Protestant land among a sea of Catholic graveyards, and began to paint what would be the first of six images entitled Isle of the Dead. An oil on canvas piece, it depicts a moody little island mausoleum crowned with a gently swaying grove of cypresses, a type of tree common in European cemeteries and some of which are referred to as arborvitae. A figure on a boat, presumably Charon, ferries a soul toward the island and away from the viewer.
Tumblr media
(Photo of The English Cemetery in Florence. Samuli Lintula. 2006.)
The Isle of the Dead paintings varied slightly from version to version, with figures and names added and removed to suit the needs of the time or the commissioner. The painting was glowingly referenced and remained fairly popular throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The painting used to be inescapable in much of European popular culture. Professor Okulicz-Kozaryn, a philologist (someone with a deep interest in the ways language and cultural canons evolve)(2) observed that the painting, like many other works in its time, was itself iterative and became widely reiterated and referenced among its contemporaries. It became something like Romantic kitsch in the eyes of modern art critics, overwrought and excessively Byronic. I imagine Miyazaki might also resent a work of that level of manufactured ubiquity, as Miyazaki famously held Disney animated films in contempt (3). Miyazaki’s films are popularly aspirational to young animators and cartoonists, but gestures at imitation typically fall well short, often reducing Miyazaki’s weighty films to kitschy images of saccharine vibes and a lazy indulgence in a sort of empty magical domestic coziness. Being trapped in a realm of rote sentiment by an uncritical, unthoughtful viewership is its own Isle of Death.
Tumblr media
(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
The Boy and the Heron follows a familiar narrative arc to many of Miyazaki’s other films: a child must journey through a magical and quietly menacing world in order to rescue their loved ones. This arc is an echo of Satsuki’s journey to find Mei in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Chihiro’s journey to rescue her parents Spirited Away (2001). To better understand Miyazaki’s fixation with this particular character journey, it can be instructive to watch Lev Atamanov’s 1957 animated film, The Snow Queen (4)(5), a beautifully realized take on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 children’s story (6)(7). Mahito’s journey continues in this tradition, as the boy travels into a painted world to rescue his new stepmother from a mysterious tower.
Throughout the film, Miyazaki visually references Isle of the Dead. Transported to a surreal world, Mahito initially awakens on a little green island with a gated mausoleum crowned with cypress trees. He is accosted by hungry pelicans before being rescued by a fisherwoman named Kiriko. After a day of catching and gutting fish, Mahito wakes up under the fisherwoman’s dining table, surrounded by kokeshi—little wooden dolls—in the shapes of the old women who run Mahito’s family’s rural household. Mahito is told they must not be touched, as the kokeshi are wards set up for his protection. There is a popular urban legend associated with the kokeshi wherein they act as stand-ins for victims of infanticide, though there seems to be very little available writing to support this legend. Still, it’s a neat little trick that Miyazaki pulls, placing a stray reference to a local legend of unverifiable provenance that persists in the popular imagination, like the effect of fairy stories passed on through oral retellings, continually remolded each new iteration.
Tumblr media
(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
Kiriko’s job in this strange landscape is to catch fish to nourish unborn spirits, the adorable floating warawara, before they can attempt to ascend on a journey into the world of the living. Their journey is thwarted by flocks of supernatural pelicans, who swarm the warawara and devour them. This seems to nod to the association of pelicans with death in mythologies around the world, especially in relationship to children (8). Miyazaki’s pelicans contemplate the passing of their generations as each successive generation seems to regress, their capacity to fulfill their roles steadily diminishing.
Tumblr media
(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
As Mahito’s adventure continues, we find the landscapes changing away from Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead into more familiar Ghibli territories as we start to see spaces inspired by one of Studio Ghibli’s aesthetic mainstays, Naohisa Inoue and his explorations of the fantasy realms of Iblard. He might be most familiar to Ghibli enthusiasts as the background artists for the more fantastical elements of Whisper of the Heart (1995).
Tumblr media
(Naohisa Inoue, for Iblard Jikan, 2007. Studio Ghibli.)
By the time we arrive at the climax of The Boy and the Heron, the fantasy island environment starts to resemble English takes on Italian gardens, the likes of which captivated illustrators and commercial artists of the early 20th century such as Maxfield Parrish. This appears to be a return to one of Böcklin’s later paintings, The Island of Life (1888), a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reaction to the overwhelming presence of Isle of the Dead in his life and career. The Island of Life depicts a little spot of land amid an ocean very like the one on which Isle of the Dead’s somber mausoleum is depicted, except this time the figures are lively and engaged with each other, the vegetation lush and colorful, replete with pink flowers and palm fronds.
Tumblr media
(Island of Life. Arnold Böcklin. Oil on canvas. 1888. Kunstmuseum. Basel, Switzerland.)
In 2022, Russia’s State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg acquired the sixth and final Isle of the Dead painting. In the last year of his life, Arnold Böcklin would paint this image in collaboration with his son Carlo Böcklin, himself an artist and an architect. Arnold Böcklin spent three years painting the same image three times over at the site of his infant daughter’s grave, trapped on the Isle of the Dead. By the time of his death in 1901 at age 74, Böcklin would be survived by only five of his fourteen children. That the final Isle of the Dead painting would be a collaboration between father and son seemed a little ironic considering Hayao Miyazaki’s reticence in passing on his own legacy. Like the old Master in The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki finds himself with no true successors.
The Master of the Tower's beautiful islands of painted glass fade into nothing as Mahito, his only worthy descendant, departs to live his own life, fulfilling the thesis of Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 book How Do You Live?, published three years after Carlo Böcklin’s death. In evoking Yoshino and Böcklin’s works, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron suggests that, like his character the Master, Miyazaki himself must make peace with the notion that he has no heirs to his legacy, and that those whom he wished to follow in his footsteps might be best served by finding their own paths.

INFORMAL ENDNOTES
1 - Symbolists are sort of tough to nail down. They were started as a literary movement to 1 distinguish themselves from the Decadents, but their manifesto was so vague that critics and academics fight about it to this day. The long and the short of it is that the Symbolists made generous use of a lot of metaphorical imagery in their work. They borrow a lot of icons from antiquity, echo the moody aesthetics from the Romantics, maintained an emphasis on figurative imagery more so than the Surrealists, and were only slightly more technically married to the trappings of traditionalist academic painters than Modernists and Impressionists. They're extremely vibes-forward.
2 - Okulicz-Kozaryn, Radosław. Predilection of Modernism for Variations. Ciulionis' Serenity among Different Developments of the Theme of Toteninsel. ACTA Academiae Artium Vilnensis 59. 2010. The article is incredibly cranky and very funny to read in parts. Contains a lot of observations I found to be helpful in placing Isle of the Dead within its context.
3 - "From my perspective, even if they are lightweight in nature, the more popular and common films still must be filled with a purity of emotion. There are few barriers to entry into these films-they will invite anyone in but the barriers to exit must be high and purifying. Films must also not be produced out of idle nervousness or boredom, or be used to recognise, emphasise, or amplify vulgarity. And in that context, I must say that I hate Disney's works. The barrier to both the entry and exit of Disney films is too low and too wide. To me, they show nothing but contempt for the audience." from Miyazaki's own writing in his collection of essays, Starting Point, published in 2014 from VIZ Media.
4 - You can watch the movie here in its original Russian with English closed captions here.
5 If you want to learn more about the making of Atamanoy's The Snow Queen, Animation Obsessive wrote a neat little article about it. It's a good overview, though I have to gently disagree with some of its conclusions about the irony of Miyazaki hating Disney and loving Snow Queen, which draws inspiration from Bambi. Feature film animation as we know it hadonly been around a few decades by 1957, and I find it specious, particularly as a comic artistand author, to see someone conflating an entire form with the character of its content, especially in the relative infancy of the form. But that's just one hot take. The rest of the essay is lovely.
6 - Miyazaki loves this movie. He blurbed it in a Japanese re-release of it in 2007.
7 - Julia Alekseyeva interprets Princess Mononoke as an iteration of Atamanov's The Snow Queen, arguing that San, the wolf princess, is Miyazaki's homage to Atamanoy's little robber girl character.

eras tour city guide: Munich
(Gelsenkirchen | Hamburg)
are you're traveling to see the eras tour in Munich and are looking for things to do in the city or just need advice for good food/drinks spots? Or are you looking for some insider information about the venue? I got you! here are some ideas for you (I will continuously update this post!):
THINGS TO DO
Englischer Garten: one of the most well-known nature spots in Munich (it's not my personal fave but the list would be missing something if it wasn't on there). huge park right in the middle of Munich. in it, there's also the famous Eisbachwelle where surfers surf on the Isar! however, it's always very packed in the summer
castle Nymphenburg: very pretty castle! it also has a huge park around it that is way less touristy so you have a chance to spend some time more by yourself!
Marienplatz & Karlsplatz/Stachus: if you're looking for shopping opportunities, this is the main place to be in Munich. extremely packed on the weekends however. at Marienplatz, you will also find the city hall whose chimes ring (including figurines coming out of the tower) each day at 11am, 12pm and 5pm!
Auer Mühlbach: nice spot for a walk along the Isar that is less crowded!
museums: many museums only demand an entrance fee of 1€ on Sundays! so if you're into museums I'd take advantage of that :) popular museums in Munich are the Pinakotheken or the Deutsches Museum.
lakes: you can reach many pretty lakes very easily and very quickly by train! (for example Starnberger See where the train tracks go right by the train so driving there has studio ghibli feels imo! Eibsee & Walchensee are also very nice but do require a car)
Glockenbachviertel: this is the area for queer history and the queer scene in Munich! Freddy Mercury for example used to frequent it! It's also right next to Viktualienmarkt (a place with many different food stands) and it's not as crowded as the Marienplatz/Stachus area. it also has very cute traffic lights!
take a walk by the Isar (for example the Flaucher)
FOOD & DRINKS
Gans Woanders: lovely little restaurant very close to the Isar! they built a little wooden house right in the middle of the city and it has a very cozy vibe. they sell home-made (vegetarian) pizza and fries! (I personally think their pizza is one of the best pizzas ever) and if you go there on a weekday at lunch time, they have even cheaper prices!
Katzentempel: located in the Univiertel! if you have ever wanted to get a coffee or some nice vegan food while petting very cute cats, this is the place to be for you! but: make sure to reserve a table because it tends to be fully booked especially on weekends!
Om Nom Nom: very tasty vegan food and they also sell a bunch of vegan snacks
Pure Burrito: on the note of non-expensive stuff, if you like burritos I can very much recommend this food chain! their small burrito is honestly so filling it's a whole lunch and it's only about 5-6€ for one!
Der verrückte Eismacher: ice cream parlour that sells experimental sorts of ice cream! it's probably one of Munich's most famous ice cream parlours. but: slightly more on the expensive side - you need to buy at least two scoops of ice cream and those cost ~3€. they also give you a free small spoon of an ice cream you want to try on top.
general advice: if you're looking for cheaper meals & drinks you should head to the Univiertel (subway stations "university"/"Giselastraße"/"Münchner Freiheit") - especially the food and drinks right in the city center are veeeery expensive (even the bakeries which is just insane to me but that's just Germany's most expensive city for you). it's also right next to the Englischer Garten!
GENERAL INFORMATION & ADVICE ABOUT THE VENUE
I will make a separate post about the eras tour concert dates at the venue once they will release information specifically about those two concerts, but for Harry Styles at least we were allowed to bring a 0.5l clear water bottle with us into the stadium!
bring a jacket! yes, even if it's 30 degrees celsius outside. it is always very windy in the stadium no matter the temperature outside!
there are tons of food stands in the area of the Olympiapark but also within the stadium (besides your usual drinks stands). at the last concert I went to there they sold Bratwurst in the pit lol
if you only have a ticket to one of the shows but are still/already in town for the other show, be sure to catch the concert from Olympiaberg! you can enjoy a nice sunset and do a picknick there and might (depending on where you find a spot) see the screen! but: I've been there for concerts a few times and the hill fills up fast, and I assume it will fill up even faster for Taylor! I would advise you to get there at 6pm at the latest if you want a (good) spot!

Hi! What would you say are your top 5 studio ghibli films? Just curious your taste is always chefs kiss

kiki's delivery service - witch?? bread?? mail?!?! i don't even need a plot.
my neighbor totoro - friendly giant creatures you sleep on like a bed??? sisters??? trees?????????
howl's moving castle - i read the book as a kid and loved it and i love the movie too. a milliner girl??? a magic moving castle??? a very dramatic loser as a love interest??? things that don't normally talk are talking?!?!?!!

1, 8, and 15 for the ask thingie?
1- my favorite song is a hard one I love the whole soundtrack to pieces, but I have particular fond memories of hearing Greenpath, the dung defender and especially sealed vessel for the first time.
When I entered Greenpath my first playthrough, was when I think I really fell in love with the game. And the music played big part in that. It gives big studio Ghibli vibes and it feels cozy but adventurous all at once. I will never forget that moment.
Dung defender I heard first actually while watching my sister play, and it was the first boss fight I remember where the music immediately stuck out to me. It captures knighthood and honor so well. and it's one (big) aspect of that fight that makes it so much fun. That and Ogrim's cheerful, playful demeanor.
Sealed vessel though! Sealed vessel was actually the very first song I heard, and I had saved it to a playlist of mine. (To help inspire my writing.) Years before I even got into hollow knight. So my brother actually bought the game the year it came out for his birthday and he and my little sister were obsessed with it for a while, I had no interest. (Didn't really play video games at all back then.) but I always really loved the art style and the vibes of the game, and I would listen as they told me about whatever bits of lore they could figure out. Anyway at one point my brother was showing me some video that had the sealed vessel soundtrack in the background and I went to look it up and save it later because THAT. SONG.
Especially the build up near the end, I get goosebumps every time. TO. THIS. DAY.
It always deeply impressed me, but now, after playing the game, and having the context for it, it makes it hurt so much worse. I will quite literally tear up if I am listening to it without distracting myself. (And the first time I heard it in game, was also while watching my sister play. At the time I did not have all the context and this was before I became obsessed, I still was tearing up though, you have no idea how distressed I was watching that fight.)
Moving on to question,
8- My favorite enemy probably lore and character design-wise, I'd have to say the mantises. I actually struggled so much in both the mantis tribe and queens garden because of them. (I was terrible my first playthrough tbh I've gotten so much better but it was fun) but I love them so much. (I'm obsessed with mantis tribe lore actually. I don't ever talk about it here, but my sisters and I have tons of headcanons and theories anyway) The traitors were annoying but they make the queens garden area so interesting and I've gotten a ton better at dodging their attacks. and walking through the mantis village after defeating the mantis lords and gaining the respect of the tribe, it's so cool. I love bowing back to them. I love them.
Also really love like, all of the mosskin. The mosscreeps are adorable and the one moss knight standing by the lake of Unn, love that guy especially.
15- Least favorite boss? Honestly, I really don't like fighting any of the dream warrior bosses. At least not after beating them once. I play in the godhome a lot and they are some of the few bosses I just, don't ever replay. Not because they are really that hard for me, actually the bosses that have taken me the most tries to beat (watcher knights, sentinel Hornet, PV, NKG ect.) are some of my favorites in the game. They're just the most.. tedious? The most annoying? I guess. And they aren't even really bad, just in comparison to other bosses in the game you know? And the characters themselves and the character designs and whatnot I find really interesting, but the boss fights themselves, Not the most enjoyable.
Wow, those are some long replies XD thanks for the ask! I love any and all excuses to talk about this game.

For the 5+ headcanons, Id love to see a Julie centric Studio Ghibli AU if you dont mind 😊
I mean a Kiki's Delivery Service Jatp AU is kind of a perfect vibe, right?
-Julie gets her mom's old broom and nearly doesn't leave, even though she promised Rose she would before she passed. To be honest the idea of leaving for a year is very tempting, even if she has no idea what she's going to do with herself. Her magic is mostly tied to her music and she just... can't.
-It gets worse when on her first night flying away she runs into Carrie who is just coming back from her year away and the conversation does not go well.
-She manages to find a nice little room above a bakery. The lady who runs it reminds her of her Tía. She starts making deliveries, simply because flying is one of the few magics she can still manage.
-Her cat stops talking to her, flying seems to take more and more out of her.
-On the way home one day, she's flying along the shore when her broom starts to sputter. She manages to land, but it's not particularly graceful, and maybe she ends up with a face full of salt water. When she looks up, two boys are running towards her, asking her if she's okay.
-They take her back to their instruments, where a forth is waiting. He takes one look at her and sets off to where they've parked the van and comes back with a bunch of towels. He also insists on her borrowing his hoodie, because she's shivering. The ocean was still very cold.
-She tries to demure but they insist. They say they'll play one more song, and then they'll pack up and drive her home, since her... mode of transportation is faulty.
-Reggie is just obsessed with the broom and tries to make it go. She tries to explain that the magic comes from the witch and not the broom but he's so cute and funny running around with it that she doesn't have the heart.
-The band plays their song and Julie... well, Julie feels her magic spark up inside of her in a way it hasn't in almost a year.
-They drive her home, and her cat is suddenly talking again, and by the time she realises she's still wearing Alex' hoodie, they've already left.
-Maybe she finds her mom's song at the bottom of her bag, folded in one of her cozy 'I'm sad' sweaters.
-Thankfully, the nice lady has an old piano in her attic, and when Julie plays, everything comes to life.
-She spends all her hard-earned money on a keyboard from the thrift store, tries not to think about how if this doesn't work, she'll be eating cat food next week because that's all she has left in the cupboards.
-She finds the boys at the pier again soon. It's hard to fly there with a keyboard strapped to her back, but she's so brimming with magic and excitement that she manages. She gives Alex back his hoodie and asks if she can play with them, just one song.
-Ray finds the first video of Julie and The Phantoms performing live before her letter even reaches him. He's so happy and proud.

i think my fav thing about ur art is how it seems to romanticize everday life! it reminds me to be grateful for the little things like watering my plants, going for walks, or just chilling at home. the vibes are always so cozy and remind me kinda of studio ghibli, and i absolutely adore the color palettes. also your line work is super impressive bc it's so detailed (but i'm not an artist so i might be sayng that wrong LOL)
That's so kind of you to say!!! 🥹💕 I've always loved studio ghiblis ability to make small moments seem so beautiful, and I wanted to try to replicate that feeling in my own work. It makes me happy to hear that other people are noticing it!! Lineart is one of my favorite things about drawing!! I used to be annoyed by it, but now I can't get enough. I get done with the lineart and get sad bc that means I have to color! LOL 😆 Coloring isn't my favorite, but it's a nessicary evil

Our favourite non-violent games of E3 Week 2021
Back in 2019, we ran a post listing every non-violent game shown during E3. Given this year’s array of E3 and E3-adjacent events produced 115 upcoming non-violent games (as you may have read somewhere), that just wasn’t practical. Instead, Rebekah and I have each picked out five our our faves. Enjoy!
- James
REBEKAH’S TOP 5
Tumblr media
Pekoe
There is perhaps nothing cozier than tea and cats. Pekoe puts the player in the shoes of the newest resident and teahouse owner in a town of sentient cats. The cats want your tea, and you can learn to make it for them, learning about different tea varieties and tea making styles as you go while building relationships with the town’s inhabitants. You can upgrade and customize your teahouse, visit other teahouses for inspiration, and learn about different rituals, customs, and preparation styles for tea. Pekoe is developed by (appropriately) Kitten Cup Studio, and is planned for release in 2022.
Tumblr media
Bear and Breakfast
Build and run a bed and breakfast in a tranquil wood...but also, you’re a bear! Startout with a rundown old inn, and build it up into splendor again while attracting and awing tourists who come to stay. Bear and Breakfast is a laidback management sim about growing a cozy woodland business, but with the added bonus of a forest mystery that unravels as your bustling breakfast nook grows. Developed by Gummy Cat, and planned for release later this year.
Tumblr media
Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery
Behind the Frame follows an artist living alone, preparing a masterpiece for a gallery submission. It’s a puzzle game focused on both her day to day activities, her interactions with a fellow painter and neighbor (and his cat!), and painting itself. You’ll use a painting and sketch mechanic to solve puzzles that explore memory and emotion, all of which takes place in a hand-animated world that looks like it was pulled straight out of a Ghibli movie. Developed by Akupara Games.
Tumblr media
Bird Problems
There are a lot of unique ideas for non-violent games and mechanics out there, but one I had personally never seen before was modeling a game after a sitcom. Bird Problems follows a young bird named Tweeter Gregory who’s clumsy and awkward, but just wants to make friends and enjoy a nice boba tea. We haven’t seen much of this game from Lithic Entertainment just yet, but its trailer at the Wholesome Direct stood out due to its resemblance to the goofy sitcoms of the 90s. But with birds!
Tumblr media
A Little to the Left
Many of the non-violent games shown over the recent E3 weeks were narrative-focused, but sometimes all you want is a pleasant little puzzle game. A Little to the Left is less complicated, and in that way seems straightforward and soothing: it’s about reorganizing, tidying up, and setting things right. You’ll spend it arranging objects into patterns that look pleasant, with occasional “help” from a mischievous interrupting cat. Developed by Max Inferno, it’s planned for launch this October.
JAMES’ TOP 5
Tumblr media
Forza Horizon 5
If you know what Forza Horizon is, you’re likely already looking forward to this one and/or have pre-ordered it/subscribed to Xbox Game Pass. For those who don’t, here’s a quick crash course (pun absolutely not intended): Developed by UK studio Playground Games, Horizon is the open-world spin-off series from Microsoft’s acclaimed Forza Motorsport franchise. While Motorsport focuses on simulation racing, Horizon offers a slightly more arcade-like experience, letting players loose behind the wheels of some of the world’s most powerful cars. You explore the landscape (Mexico, this time) to find more race locations or other ways to raise your Influence. Doing so unlocks the Top Gear-esque showstopper challenge. New to the mix are Expeditions, which take you on guided tours of the most beautiful places of the map, and Horizon Arcade, which lets you create your own tracks, stunts and races. Forza Horizon 5 is due for release on November 9th.
Tumblr media
Sable
This indie sci-fi exploration game has been in the works for several years, but it’s finally approaching release. Set on a desert planet, you play a young woman from a nomadic tribe sent on a ritualistic quest to explore the world - on a hoverbike. Akin to Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder, or more accurately the giant USB dongle Rey drove in The Force Awakens, your task is to discover more about the world as you learn more about yourself. Investigating the wreckage of old ships will help you find the components you need to upgrade your bike, and as you meet other tribes, you can complete side quests to help them and forge new friendships. Developed by Shedworks, Sable will be available from September 23rd.
Tumblr media
Phantom Abyss
This game has a bit of an Indiana Jones meets Mirror's Edge kind of vibe. Players race through ancient temples, leaping chasms and dodging booby traps, in the hopes of being the first to reach the relic at the centre. You don't technically compete with other players in real time; instead, you race their ghosts, following their leads and learning from their mistakes. Each temple is randomly generated, but as soon as someone claims the relic, they are declared champion of that particular temple and the course is removed forever, cementing their victory. And yes, you have an Indy-style whip to swing across gaps. It’s developed by Team WIBY and launched in Early Access last week.
Tumblr media
Lake
Most video game stories present the player with world-ending stakes, sending them on an urgent quest where the clock is always ticking. Lake is a much more personal and relaxed affair. Set in 1986, you take on the role of Meredith Weiss, a forty-something career woman taking a break ahead of her software company’s big launch. She heads back to the fictional lakeside town of Providence Oaks, Oregon, her childhood home, to rediscover old friends and see what (if anything) has changed. She also takes on her father’s role as a mail carrier, delivering letters and parcels each day while he is on holiday. During the two weeks, she can forge friendships, find love, or even choose to give up her career and make a new home for herself - the choice is up to you. Lake is developed by Gamious and is due for release by the end of the year.
Tumblr media
Schim
This 3D puzzle platformer has a simple but wonderfully creative premise: jumping between shadows. You control a schim: the soul of a living creature or object. This particular schim has become separated from the human being it was attached to, and it’s up to you to reunite them. You can hop between shadows as if they were pools of water, and if a shadow is moving (for example, the shadow of someone walking about or a bird flying) that pool will move and take you with it. Working out the best route between shadows is the only way to navigate each level, set across various urban and rural spaces. Timing is the key, because as soon as you leap out of a shadow and land in the light, it’s game over. As you can see, all of this is presented in a beautifully distinct style. Schim is being developed by Ewould van der Werf, although a release window has yet to be decided.

@isolationaroundus tagged me to post a list including 10 of my comfort artists (‘’basically anyone who you can listen to any time of the day or week and not get tired.’’) It took me way too long to do, life has been hectic Thank you very much for tagging me 💕 it was really fun!
1. Bring Me The Horizon. There's a reason why my only tattoo is BMTH related and that's because I love them and all of their work. Specifically Sempiternal and That's The Spirit came out in a very shitty times in my life and they were great comfort.
2. Hozier. The romance. The beautifully passed horniness. The inclusivity. The decomposing in a field with the love of your life... Need I say more?
3. Florence + the Machine. Similar vibes to Hozier. Truly feeds my need to just run away to the forest, never to be seen again.
4. Stevie Nicks / Fleetwood Mac. Apart from the obvious witch feel that they have, they remind me of visits on my older cousins when I was little. I can't even remember how many I've sat on their beds while they were getting ready to go out, singing along with them, somehow always ending up dolled up too along the way, while playing these songs so they just spark a warm cozy feeling.
5. Erutan. If you know me then you know that I'm a slut for a good story song and Erutan has so so many of those, I could get lost listening to them for hours.
6. Karliene. Similar to Erutan. I really am a slut for story songs! Also Karliene has beautiful covers on movies' soundtracks which is pretty neat in her style.
7. Chopin. I like classical music in general but I think Chopin is the one I prefer the most. Nocturnes just feel like... a rainy night. And I love that.
8. Joe Hisaishi. I think this one is pretty obvious. The Studio Ghibli movie soundtracks are very very beautiful and evoke the same comfort as the movies.
9. Peter Gurdy. First of all I'm just... impressed by this man's talent. He's an Australian, multi-instrumental composer and his pieces are spectacular. Second of all, they just fit so well to my daydreams and many of the concepts that I'm trying to get on my playlists so I really really love his work.
10. 위로받는 밤 Ambience and Garnet Sound. I couldn't choose between the two. They're both ASMR/Ambience artists on YouTube and they have amazing audios, some of which are inspired by anime/shows/movies and even feature pieces from the soundtracks in some of them. Whether it's to study, read or fall asleep to, they're lovely. My favorite one has to be 위로받는 밤 Ambience's Bungou Stray Dogs Bar Lupin Ambience audio.
I'm tagging @bibbidi-bobbidi-boo-ya, @interstellar-bunny, @vincent-van-hoes, @tangerinewoo, @xiusaffogato, @psychotikos, @amarannta of course only if you guys want to

1 and 12 for the whole crew!
1.) Where do they live?
I tend to base them all out of New York City in my brain space, because it’s easier for hypothetical modern AU interactions for them all to live in one space, but I’m not dead set on it. Makes them adaptable to bug other people’s OCs if I ever do modern AU writing lmao
12.) What’s their favorite movie, the one they have to show all of their friends/partners?
Zelda honestly makes me think horror fiend - wide eyed wrapped in cozy blankets as suspenseful soundtracks build up and up and up, though she enjoys the mindfucks more. If she had to pick a favorite movie, it’d be Suspiria (1977, not the 2018 re-release), because it is absolutely a trip and a half no matter how many times she watches it.
(also that is a personal recommendation FUCK I love Suspiria)
Miriyam says animated feel-goods and I cannot explain why. I think of all the Studio Ghibli, which I think she’d really love, she’d vibe hard with Howl’s Moving Castle or My Neighbor Totoro. She watches a bit of everything but if she wants something to watch with a partner or a friend, it’s probably going to be one of those she suggests.
Astoria, like me, absolutely fucking loves The Shape of Water. It’s absolutely their favorite and if it’s ever suggested to them they’ll automatically say yes, hands down. They won’t force it on a partner, but they’ll be very happy if you’re willing to sit and cuddle with them even if you’re not paying attention. Also a sucker for romances in general so really any of them are a safe bet.
Matilda adores the Princess Diaries. It was a movie that became a staple of spending time with her sisters growing up, and it sparks a sense of nostalgia for her every time it kicks on. However, she loves costume design, and if you even suggest something looks interesting based on the visuals, she is diving for the remote and asking where you can find it so she can sigh dreamily over all the pretty looks.
Tamryn is screaming Legally Blonde. Loves it to death, can quote large portions of it, but don’t suggest Legally Blonde 2 because you’ll be met with a dramatic sigh and a “it’s not the same”. He is also a sucker for any ‘chick flick’ and will throw popcorn at the screen for shitty boyfriends, but gets such hard second hand embarrassment from movies he will literally leave the room until a scene ends to try and avoid feeling it.

hi! i’d like to request a haikyuu matchup :) i’m a straight girl who’s 5’3 i’m mixed (blasian) i have shoulder length dark brown curly hair and brown eyes. my hogwarts house is racenclaw but i have a lot of hufflepuff qualities, my mbti is ENFP, my enneagram type is type 2, my zodiac is capricorn, and i’m a bit of an old soul I LOVE boba and studio ghibli movies. my interests are photography, reading, writing, and playing video games. I also love talking about dreams and horoscopes and their meanings. my fav song rn is “21” by gracie i’m a closeted weeb I’m kinda shy when you first meet me but once you get to know me i’m pretty outgoing and crazy but overall i’d say that i’m more of an ambivert.  I’ve been told I can get a bit stubborn but that’s only because it’s when i do something i’m not used to or it’s something i’m against. but i like to keep an open mind going into new things. I’m pretty artsy and i like expressing myself through different mediums. I don’t play a sport but I love to run and workout. I absolutely love flowers I like to surround myself with people who have good vibes and bring out the best in me as well as themselves. My idea date is something sweet and meaningful like a picnic in the park and taking a walk and  watching the stars afterwards. I’m kinda a hopeless romantic if that helps any hehe thank you!!@milkteeboba
Ah almost forgot about this one! Thank you for requesting!!❤️💜❤️
On your nightly run, you liked to get lost in the music, look at round and surround yourself with nauture, it always makes you feel happier. Greenery and the sun setting down, darker hues beginning to take over, the lights above you starting to turn on, the cozy neighborhood always made you feel at ease, and that's why you adored you nightly routine. Of course being the daydreamer you are, you're too busy thinking. Homework, test, projects, but that's not the only things on your mind. The cute neighbor who moved in a couple of weeks ago taking over your life completely. It seems like you've been only able to draw him, to hear his voice only, everything reminding you of him even though you didn't know a single thing about him, barely his name but you doubt he knows yours, which made you a bit sad. And of course you had to get too lost in your own mind, tripping on a rock that was in your way. Closing your eyes, embracing the pain, it never came. Instead you felt yourself being lifted up, and put back on your two feet, eyes meeting honey brown ones.... The ones you've been fawning over lately. The eyes of Terushima Yuuji.
Compatible:
-He's a fun guy always ready for adventure.
-He's the kind of person to get along with any type of person. So when you first meet him, he'll understand that he needs to give you time to open up to him and feel relaxed with him.
-You're crazy? So is he honestly. He's always in for fun, not care about what people think of him, he'll do whatever he wants and he'll teach you how to do that too.
-He'll work out with you whenever. He likes to workout it puts him in a good mood and if you enjoy it, that's great.
-He's always happy, it's so so rare to see this guy in a bad mood and he'll always make you feel that way no matter what's going on.
Difficulties:
-If you think you're pretty stubborn, wait until you meet him.
-He's so attached to his beliefs and his opinions and he won't give up on them, even when he knows that he's wrong.
-He doesn't like to be told what to do, so if you ever ask him to calm down, to relax, people are staring he'll ignore you, tell you off because he doesn't care. You always feel embarrassed when he does that.
-He takes nothing seriously, not even your relationship. And what if he's flirting with some other girl? It's just for fun you know that.
-He's not the most romantic person either. So don't expect too much from him. And if he does something romantic you know you won't be able to enjoy it, there's always a meaning behind it.
Others:
-Oikawa
-Kuroo
-Nishinoya
-Akaashi
