Cross-posting an essay I wrote for my Patreon since the post is free and open to the public.

Hello everyone! I hope you're relaxing as best you can this holiday season. I recently went to see Miyazaki's latest Ghibli movie, The Boy and the Heron, and I had some thoughts about it. If you're into art historical allusions and gently cranky opinions, please enjoy. I've attached a downloadable PDF in the Patreon post if you'd prefer to read it that way. Apologies for the formatting of the endnotes! Patreon's text posting does not allow for superscripts, which means all my notations are in awkward parentheses. Please note that this writing contains some mild spoilers for The Boy and the Heron.

Hayao Miyazaki’s 2023 feature animated film The Boy and the Heron reads as an extended meditation on grief and legacy. The Master of a grand tower seeks a descendant to carry on his maddening duty, balancing toy blocks of magical stone upon which the entire fabric of his little pocket of reality rests. The world’s foundations are frail and fleeting, and can pass away into the cold void of space should he neglect to maintain this task. The Master’s desire to pass the torch undergirds much of the film’s narrative.

(Isle of the Dead. Arnold Böcklin. 1880. Oil on Canvas. Kunstmuseum. Basel, Switzerland.)
Arnold Böcklin, a Swiss Symbolist(1) painter, was born on October 16 in 1827, the same year the Swiss Evangelical Reformed Church bought a plot of land in Florence from the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II, that had long been used for the burials of Protestants around Florence. It is colloquially known as The English Cemetery, so called because it was the resting place of many Anglophones and Protestants around Tuscany, and Böcklin frequented this cemetery—his workshop was adjacent and his infant daughter Maria was buried there. In 1880, he drew inspiration from the cemetery, a lone plot of Protestant land among a sea of Catholic graveyards, and began to paint what would be the first of six images entitled Isle of the Dead. An oil on canvas piece, it depicts a moody little island mausoleum crowned with a gently swaying grove of cypresses, a type of tree common in European cemeteries and some of which are referred to as arborvitae. A figure on a boat, presumably Charon, ferries a soul toward the island and away from the viewer.

(Photo of The English Cemetery in Florence. Samuli Lintula. 2006.)
The Isle of the Dead paintings varied slightly from version to version, with figures and names added and removed to suit the needs of the time or the commissioner. The painting was glowingly referenced and remained fairly popular throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The painting used to be inescapable in much of European popular culture. Professor Okulicz-Kozaryn, a philologist (someone with a deep interest in the ways language and cultural canons evolve)(2) observed that the painting, like many other works in its time, was itself iterative and became widely reiterated and referenced among its contemporaries. It became something like Romantic kitsch in the eyes of modern art critics, overwrought and excessively Byronic. I imagine Miyazaki might also resent a work of that level of manufactured ubiquity, as Miyazaki famously held Disney animated films in contempt (3). Miyazaki’s films are popularly aspirational to young animators and cartoonists, but gestures at imitation typically fall well short, often reducing Miyazaki’s weighty films to kitschy images of saccharine vibes and a lazy indulgence in a sort of empty magical domestic coziness. Being trapped in a realm of rote sentiment by an uncritical, unthoughtful viewership is its own Isle of Death.

(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
The Boy and the Heron follows a familiar narrative arc to many of Miyazaki’s other films: a child must journey through a magical and quietly menacing world in order to rescue their loved ones. This arc is an echo of Satsuki’s journey to find Mei in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Chihiro’s journey to rescue her parents Spirited Away (2001). To better understand Miyazaki’s fixation with this particular character journey, it can be instructive to watch Lev Atamanov’s 1957 animated film, The Snow Queen (4)(5), a beautifully realized take on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 children’s story (6)(7). Mahito’s journey continues in this tradition, as the boy travels into a painted world to rescue his new stepmother from a mysterious tower.
Throughout the film, Miyazaki visually references Isle of the Dead. Transported to a surreal world, Mahito initially awakens on a little green island with a gated mausoleum crowned with cypress trees. He is accosted by hungry pelicans before being rescued by a fisherwoman named Kiriko. After a day of catching and gutting fish, Mahito wakes up under the fisherwoman’s dining table, surrounded by kokeshi—little wooden dolls—in the shapes of the old women who run Mahito’s family’s rural household. Mahito is told they must not be touched, as the kokeshi are wards set up for his protection. There is a popular urban legend associated with the kokeshi wherein they act as stand-ins for victims of infanticide, though there seems to be very little available writing to support this legend. Still, it’s a neat little trick that Miyazaki pulls, placing a stray reference to a local legend of unverifiable provenance that persists in the popular imagination, like the effect of fairy stories passed on through oral retellings, continually remolded each new iteration.

(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
Kiriko’s job in this strange landscape is to catch fish to nourish unborn spirits, the adorable floating warawara, before they can attempt to ascend on a journey into the world of the living. Their journey is thwarted by flocks of supernatural pelicans, who swarm the warawara and devour them. This seems to nod to the association of pelicans with death in mythologies around the world, especially in relationship to children (8). Miyazaki’s pelicans contemplate the passing of their generations as each successive generation seems to regress, their capacity to fulfill their roles steadily diminishing.

(Still from The Boy and the Heron, 2023. Studio Ghibli.)
As Mahito’s adventure continues, we find the landscapes changing away from Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead into more familiar Ghibli territories as we start to see spaces inspired by one of Studio Ghibli’s aesthetic mainstays, Naohisa Inoue and his explorations of the fantasy realms of Iblard. He might be most familiar to Ghibli enthusiasts as the background artists for the more fantastical elements of Whisper of the Heart (1995).

(Naohisa Inoue, for Iblard Jikan, 2007. Studio Ghibli.)
By the time we arrive at the climax of The Boy and the Heron, the fantasy island environment starts to resemble English takes on Italian gardens, the likes of which captivated illustrators and commercial artists of the early 20th century such as Maxfield Parrish. This appears to be a return to one of Böcklin’s later paintings, The Island of Life (1888), a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reaction to the overwhelming presence of Isle of the Dead in his life and career. The Island of Life depicts a little spot of land amid an ocean very like the one on which Isle of the Dead’s somber mausoleum is depicted, except this time the figures are lively and engaged with each other, the vegetation lush and colorful, replete with pink flowers and palm fronds.

(Island of Life. Arnold Böcklin. Oil on canvas. 1888. Kunstmuseum. Basel, Switzerland.)
In 2022, Russia’s State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg acquired the sixth and final Isle of the Dead painting. In the last year of his life, Arnold Böcklin would paint this image in collaboration with his son Carlo Böcklin, himself an artist and an architect. Arnold Böcklin spent three years painting the same image three times over at the site of his infant daughter’s grave, trapped on the Isle of the Dead. By the time of his death in 1901 at age 74, Böcklin would be survived by only five of his fourteen children. That the final Isle of the Dead painting would be a collaboration between father and son seemed a little ironic considering Hayao Miyazaki’s reticence in passing on his own legacy. Like the old Master in The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki finds himself with no true successors.
The Master of the Tower's beautiful islands of painted glass fade into nothing as Mahito, his only worthy descendant, departs to live his own life, fulfilling the thesis of Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 book How Do You Live?, published three years after Carlo Böcklin’s death. In evoking Yoshino and Böcklin’s works, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron suggests that, like his character the Master, Miyazaki himself must make peace with the notion that he has no heirs to his legacy, and that those whom he wished to follow in his footsteps might be best served by finding their own paths.

(Isle of the Dead. Arnold and Carlo Böcklin. Oil on canvas. 1901. The State Hermitage Museum. Saint Petersburg, Russia.)
INFORMAL ENDNOTES
1 - Symbolists are sort of tough to nail down. They were started as a literary movement to 1 distinguish themselves from the Decadents, but their manifesto was so vague that critics and academics fight about it to this day. The long and the short of it is that the Symbolists made generous use of a lot of metaphorical imagery in their work. They borrow a lot of icons from antiquity, echo the moody aesthetics from the Romantics, maintained an emphasis on figurative imagery more so than the Surrealists, and were only slightly more technically married to the trappings of traditionalist academic painters than Modernists and Impressionists. They're extremely vibes-forward.
2 - Okulicz-Kozaryn, Radosław. Predilection of Modernism for Variations. Ciulionis' Serenity among Different Developments of the Theme of Toteninsel. ACTA Academiae Artium Vilnensis 59. 2010. The article is incredibly cranky and very funny to read in parts. Contains a lot of observations I found to be helpful in placing Isle of the Dead within its context.
3 - "From my perspective, even if they are lightweight in nature, the more popular and common films still must be filled with a purity of emotion. There are few barriers to entry into these films-they will invite anyone in but the barriers to exit must be high and purifying. Films must also not be produced out of idle nervousness or boredom, or be used to recognise, emphasise, or amplify vulgarity. And in that context, I must say that I hate Disney's works. The barrier to both the entry and exit of Disney films is too low and too wide. To me, they show nothing but contempt for the audience." from Miyazaki's own writing in his collection of essays, Starting Point, published in 2014 from VIZ Media.
4 - You can watch the movie here in its original Russian with English closed captions here.
5 If you want to learn more about the making of Atamanoy's The Snow Queen, Animation Obsessive wrote a neat little article about it. It's a good overview, though I have to gently disagree with some of its conclusions about the irony of Miyazaki hating Disney and loving Snow Queen, which draws inspiration from Bambi. Feature film animation as we know it hadonly been around a few decades by 1957, and I find it specious, particularly as a comic artistand author, to see someone conflating an entire form with the character of its content, especially in the relative infancy of the form. But that's just one hot take. The rest of the essay is lovely.
6 - Miyazaki loves this movie. He blurbed it in a Japanese re-release of it in 2007.
7 - Julia Alekseyeva interprets Princess Mononoke as an iteration of Atamanov's The Snow Queen, arguing that San, the wolf princess, is Miyazaki's homage to Atamanoy's little robber girl character.

What Do I Write????
Dearest tumblr followers, mutuals, and whoever else sees this: I would really love to actually write/finish an original story for my youngest sister, but my brain has become a squirrel and will NOT focus. So, I’m going to use the power of ✨social pressure✨ to pick one and stick to it. Please vote on which one I should buckle down and complete instead of jumping around all of them.
(more information about each under the poll - please note titles are very rough)
1 A Small Song for the World
Arthurian retelling
Set in the ruins of a very-far-future, Taliesin retells the rise and fall of Arthur while trying to overcome his own grief/trauma about the whole thing
Writer has been extremely obsessed with Arthuriana - especially Le Morte D’Arthur - for years and this is just an excuse to throw in ALL the references/retell all her favourite bits WHILE ALSO playing around with “medieval-ish but not actually set in medieval times” worldbuilding
Also set in Canada because the forests are bigger and it has its own: Windsor, Cornwall, Paris, London, etc. And because the writer is from there and wants it to be
Writer once described it to their sister as: “Are you ready to cry?”
2 Fairies in the Library
Magical library where fairies (who are less beings of flesh and more pure magic) inhabit bodies made out of felt, buttons and wood - puppets, basically
New librarian gets job dealing with the library and its “Delightful Patrons”, as well as the impending doom of the Tithe (fairy sacrifice tax, aka the one thing they fear)
Look, the writer may have a Muppets obsession and thinks that the Fae would make Rad Puppets alright?
Make Fairies Super Weird Again 2025
Also an excuse for the writer to put in all the arts-and-crafts as well as play around with some cozy-horror elements. Think Welcome to Nightvale, but instead of trying to kill you the librarian just wants to earn her paycheck please
3 A Half-Tamed Heart
Servant girl made out of flowers learns to be person with free will thanks to the power of love, kindness, and a vicious beast which has cursed her home
Hey, did you know the writer is obsessed with flowers? Because in this story, we shall see how deeply the writer is obsessed with flowers
Did you know the writer is also obsessed with birds, especially owls? And embroidery?
Writer is putting Studio Ghibli vibes and Grimms’ Fairy Tales in a blender together
Writer may have read the Blodeuwedd myth too many times, and while this isn’t a retelling it's definitely a big influence on it
4 Fantasy Decameron
It's the end of the world, and the last few survivors spend their final days sharing stories. Through those stories we discover how the world came to end, and how many it could still be saved
Stories within stories within stories
Writer was obsessed with those “World Mythology” books as a child. Also, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron and Catherynne Valente’s Orphan’s Tales) rewired her brain with how one can structure stories
Writer also blames the movie The Pagemaster for this one, though the reason why is a bit spoiler-y (she may have watched it on repeat WAY TOO MANY times as a small child)
5 Seven Wild Siblings
An immortal is exiled from paradise and forced to guard the sea-cliffs where a great power has been sealed away. What should be a lonely existence is instead filled with the mortals who make those cliffs their home. As the centuries pass and the place changes - from temple to castle to school to museum - those many short lives shape what she does when the seal finally breaks
More of the writer’s obsessions (history and place, Alan Garner’s The Stone Book Quartet, Tintagel) once again smushed together to make a story
Probably the one most influenced by The Silmarillion, as the writer gets to play with immortal/mortal relationships, and echoes of the past repeating over and over, and the importance of hope.
Death is a character and he’s a trickster god (aka an absolute menace) and no, the writer will not elaborate further
(Fun fact! All five of these stories have some sort of sad bard in them. I wonder WHAT character that I write a ridiculous amount of fanfic about could possibly be responsible for that?)
Thank you again for your help. I appreciate it greatly 😊
#please help me I cannot focus#its like ten squirrels now control my brain#fanfic - sure I can work on that and finish a piece#original fic - I just keep bouncing and want to work on them all at the same time and then get nothing done#very frustrating#thank you very much#my writing

eras tour city guide: Munich
(Gelsenkirchen | Hamburg)
are you're traveling to see the eras tour in Munich and are looking for things to do in the city or just need advice for good food/drinks spots? Or are you looking for some insider information about the venue? I got you! here are some ideas for you (I will continuously update this post!):
THINGS TO DO
Englischer Garten: one of the most well-known nature spots in Munich (it's not my personal fave but the list would be missing something if it wasn't on there). huge park right in the middle of Munich. in it, there's also the famous Eisbachwelle where surfers surf on the Isar! however, it's always very packed in the summer
castle Nymphenburg: very pretty castle! it also has a huge park around it that is way less touristy so you have a chance to spend some time more by yourself!
Marienplatz & Karlsplatz/Stachus: if you're looking for shopping opportunities, this is the main place to be in Munich. extremely packed on the weekends however. at Marienplatz, you will also find the city hall whose chimes ring (including figurines coming out of the tower) each day at 11am, 12pm and 5pm!
Auer Mühlbach: nice spot for a walk along the Isar that is less crowded!
museums: many museums only demand an entrance fee of 1€ on Sundays! so if you're into museums I'd take advantage of that :) popular museums in Munich are the Pinakotheken or the Deutsches Museum.
lakes: you can reach many pretty lakes very easily and very quickly by train! (for example Starnberger See where the train tracks go right by the train so driving there has studio ghibli feels imo! Eibsee & Walchensee are also very nice but do require a car)
Glockenbachviertel: this is the area for queer history and the queer scene in Munich! Freddy Mercury for example used to frequent it! It's also right next to Viktualienmarkt (a place with many different food stands) and it's not as crowded as the Marienplatz/Stachus area. it also has very cute traffic lights!
take a walk by the Isar (for example the Flaucher)
FOOD & DRINKS
Gans Woanders: lovely little restaurant very close to the Isar! they built a little wooden house right in the middle of the city and it has a very cozy vibe. they sell home-made (vegetarian) pizza and fries! (I personally think their pizza is one of the best pizzas ever) and if you go there on a weekday at lunch time, they have even cheaper prices!
Katzentempel: located in the Univiertel! if you have ever wanted to get a coffee or some nice vegan food while petting very cute cats, this is the place to be for you! but: make sure to reserve a table because it tends to be fully booked especially on weekends!
Om Nom Nom: very tasty vegan food and they also sell a bunch of vegan snacks
Pure Burrito: on the note of non-expensive stuff, if you like burritos I can very much recommend this food chain! their small burrito is honestly so filling it's a whole lunch and it's only about 5-6€ for one!
Der verrückte Eismacher: ice cream parlour that sells experimental sorts of ice cream! it's probably one of Munich's most famous ice cream parlours. but: slightly more on the expensive side - you need to buy at least two scoops of ice cream and those cost ~3€. they also give you a free small spoon of an ice cream you want to try on top.
general advice: if you're looking for cheaper meals & drinks you should head to the Univiertel (subway stations "university"/"Giselastraße"/"Münchner Freiheit") - especially the food and drinks right in the city center are veeeery expensive (even the bakeries which is just insane to me but that's just Germany's most expensive city for you). it's also right next to the Englischer Garten!
GENERAL INFORMATION & ADVICE ABOUT THE VENUE
I will make a separate post about the eras tour concert dates at the venue once they will release information specifically about those two concerts, but for Harry Styles at least we were allowed to bring a 0.5l clear water bottle with us into the stadium!
bring a jacket! yes, even if it's 30 degrees celsius outside. it is always very windy in the stadium no matter the temperature outside!
there are tons of food stands in the area of the Olympiapark but also within the stadium (besides your usual drinks stands). at the last concert I went to there they sold Bratwurst in the pit lol
if you only have a ticket to one of the shows but are still/already in town for the other show, be sure to catch the concert from Olympiaberg! you can enjoy a nice sunset and do a picknick there and might (depending on where you find a spot) see the screen! but: I've been there for concerts a few times and the hill fills up fast, and I assume it will fill up even faster for Taylor! I would advise you to get there at 6pm at the latest if you want a (good) spot!

hi cig!! thank you for the ask and you are not behind at all!! the fic will be there whenever you are ready for it 💜 and ooooh i love this question! i think it would have to be one of the studio ghibli movies with the cozy fantasy town vibes, like kiki's delivery service or howl's moving castle. i just wanna live that idyllic life and eat that delicious food 🤤

1, 8, and 15 for the ask thingie?
1- my favorite song is a hard one I love the whole soundtrack to pieces, but I have particular fond memories of hearing Greenpath, the dung defender and especially sealed vessel for the first time.
When I entered Greenpath my first playthrough, was when I think I really fell in love with the game. And the music played big part in that. It gives big studio Ghibli vibes and it feels cozy but adventurous all at once. I will never forget that moment.
Dung defender I heard first actually while watching my sister play, and it was the first boss fight I remember where the music immediately stuck out to me. It captures knighthood and honor so well. and it's one (big) aspect of that fight that makes it so much fun. That and Ogrim's cheerful, playful demeanor.
Sealed vessel though! Sealed vessel was actually the very first song I heard, and I had saved it to a playlist of mine. (To help inspire my writing.) Years before I even got into hollow knight. So my brother actually bought the game the year it came out for his birthday and he and my little sister were obsessed with it for a while, I had no interest. (Didn't really play video games at all back then.) but I always really loved the art style and the vibes of the game, and I would listen as they told me about whatever bits of lore they could figure out. Anyway at one point my brother was showing me some video that had the sealed vessel soundtrack in the background and I went to look it up and save it later because THAT. SONG.
Especially the build up near the end, I get goosebumps every time. TO. THIS. DAY.
It always deeply impressed me, but now, after playing the game, and having the context for it, it makes it hurt so much worse. I will quite literally tear up if I am listening to it without distracting myself. (And the first time I heard it in game, was also while watching my sister play. At the time I did not have all the context and this was before I became obsessed, I still was tearing up though, you have no idea how distressed I was watching that fight.)
Moving on to question,
8- My favorite enemy probably lore and character design-wise, I'd have to say the mantises. I actually struggled so much in both the mantis tribe and queens garden because of them. (I was terrible my first playthrough tbh I've gotten so much better but it was fun) but I love them so much. (I'm obsessed with mantis tribe lore actually. I don't ever talk about it here, but my sisters and I have tons of headcanons and theories anyway) The traitors were annoying but they make the queens garden area so interesting and I've gotten a ton better at dodging their attacks. and walking through the mantis village after defeating the mantis lords and gaining the respect of the tribe, it's so cool. I love bowing back to them. I love them.
Also really love like, all of the mosskin. The mosscreeps are adorable and the one moss knight standing by the lake of Unn, love that guy especially.
15- Least favorite boss? Honestly, I really don't like fighting any of the dream warrior bosses. At least not after beating them once. I play in the godhome a lot and they are some of the few bosses I just, don't ever replay. Not because they are really that hard for me, actually the bosses that have taken me the most tries to beat (watcher knights, sentinel Hornet, PV, NKG ect.) are some of my favorites in the game. They're just the most.. tedious? The most annoying? I guess. And they aren't even really bad, just in comparison to other bosses in the game you know? And the characters themselves and the character designs and whatnot I find really interesting, but the boss fights themselves, Not the most enjoyable.
Wow, those are some long replies XD thanks for the ask! I love any and all excuses to talk about this game.

Hi! What would you say are your top 5 studio ghibli films? Just curious your taste is always chefs kiss
oh i love ghibli! idk if mine are the preferred because i'm really just into the cozy vibes as opposed to the big plot ones but here are mine! the order of preference changes constantly-
kiki's delivery service - witch?? bread?? mail?!?! i don't even need a plot.
my neighbor totoro - friendly giant creatures you sleep on like a bed??? sisters??? trees?????????
howl's moving castle - i read the book as a kid and loved it and i love the movie too. a milliner girl??? a magic moving castle??? a very dramatic loser as a love interest??? things that don't normally talk are talking?!?!?!!
spirited away - world of spirits?? little guys??? dragons???
arietty - again, i read the borrowers as a child and was thrilled to see this. i think a ghibli adaptation of your books must be the highest honor. and little miniature worlds using big items????? incredible, no notes.

I've dreamt an entire new realm of the dead tonight
I was in some kind of a motel that was like small and cozy, and through the window I could see a building with a few apartments and some people who were going in and out, probably locators, mostly old women covered completely in clothes. There was even one with a dog that looked like it was starving, it's whe fur unnaturally white as if it was just that old, not such colour. Me and a boy I was there with asked about that and we're told it was not the right place for him and he should go, because it was for women (don't ask me why tho there were men too I think). But it was, in fact, the right place for me, the realm of the dead, and my house, since I died before which I didn't remember but was told
Also the house prices were rather unaffordable but I stole money
So the whole realm was closer to a city, with different districts and streets for different people except basically most based on whether or not you could buy an apartment there, and the place I've seen was one of the most expensive and calm
The city was also a bit like a port city, I'd say, like Scumport. Overall vibe was so cool I'd love to see it as a studio Ghibli movie because it certainly seemed like one, with ghosts swinging lazily through the streets, me being confused but cool about it, and even the sad boy being the only normal person until he was sent away
#and then my mind ruined the vibe#and later i was dreaming about magical animals#about like in “summoner”#we were using skin and furs to connect with them#and there were magical symbols#a circle with a triangle and something to it#idk it was weird but cool#pretty sure the symbol#also led to the ghibli-like realm of the dead too#dream#how... how do i tag it#whatever

𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑖⠀:⠀take them to amusing trips!

Would you come with me? Start a new adventure and see the other side of the world?

Via and Spain
I’ve been daydreaming about taking Via to Spain because it feels like the perfect escape for us. We’d start with an enchanting night at a grand opera house, soaking in the drama and music. Afterward, we’d wander through the charming streets of Barcelona, admiring the whimsical architecture of Gaudí. I’d love to take her to the Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid for some tapas and finish the day watching the sunset over the Alhambra in Granada. Spain just seems like the kind of place where memories turn golden.
Lula and Japan
Japanese vibes and Lula are match made in heaven. I’d plan the most delightful trip for her, starting with renting a cozy, vintage Japanese house tucked in the countryside, surrounded by cherry blossoms if we’re lucky. We’d explore Kyoto’s timeless shrines, stroll through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and sip matcha tea in traditional teahouses. Of course, I’d bring my camera everywhere, Lula’s aesthetic in those dreamy Japanese landscapes would be unreal. And maybe, just maybe, we’d end up visiting Studio Ghibli’s Museum for a sprinkle of magic.

Asahi and Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is one of those hidden gems people don’t talk about enough, but it’s calling my name. I’d love to take Asahi there to uncover its natural beauty. We’d hike through the lush trails of El Yunque National Forest, swim in the shimmering waters of Flamenco Beach, and even paddle through the glowing bioluminescent bays at night. I can already picture us getting lost in the colorful streets of Old San Juan, tasting the local cuisine, and dancing to salsa rhythms under the stars. It’s the kind of adventure that is impossible to forget!

i think my fav thing about ur art is how it seems to romanticize everday life! it reminds me to be grateful for the little things like watering my plants, going for walks, or just chilling at home. the vibes are always so cozy and remind me kinda of studio ghibli, and i absolutely adore the color palettes. also your line work is super impressive bc it's so detailed (but i'm not an artist so i might be sayng that wrong LOL)
That's so kind of you to say!!! 🥹💕 I've always loved studio ghiblis ability to make small moments seem so beautiful, and I wanted to try to replicate that feeling in my own work. It makes me happy to hear that other people are noticing it!! Lineart is one of my favorite things about drawing!! I used to be annoyed by it, but now I can't get enough. I get done with the lineart and get sad bc that means I have to color! LOL 😆 Coloring isn't my favorite, but it's a nessicary evil

Oh my gosh I love all your guys they are so cool!
am a sucker for urban fantasy, so that one is really fun! I love when characters are literal vampires and witches and dragons and whatnot and *still* have to face the horrors of high school. Andre and Erin are particularly fun to me. I love when changeling stories happen that aren't related to trying to switch the kids back! Let that squishy baby be raised by dragons and let that dragon baby be raised by squishy humans!
I feel you so hard on the not being able to name things lol. I have a bunch of parents/siblings/cousins/aunts of characters who all have no names and it is slowly driving me insane.
Lev, Pon, and Dandelion's world is really cool! A world that's big and a bit empty because of really frequent magical disasters is just an awesome vibe! Very melancholic, but weirdly cozy too. Kinda Studio Ghibli-esque.
I really like that Dandelion is just very casually a shapeshifter into a super powerful animal. She probably has no idea she's even that OP. Lev being really frail but really likeable is so true to life, I have met so many people with the charisma to rule the world if their constant illness wasn't stopping them. I already feel like I need to give Pon a cookie, poor baby has been through a lot and the story hasn't even started yet!
Thank you so much for yapping. Literally anytime you wanna talk about them, I'd love to hear!
Please tell me everything about your OCs!!! I see you post about them but can't find the proper intros (if they have them)
(Specifically thinking about lev, pon, dandelion, and hecate, but whoever's on your brain is great!)
AAAAHH I'm so excited you asked me this!! YAYYYYY!!! ok--this is going to be pretty long so I'm going to put it under a cut :3
I have two main settings for my characters: a kind of magical-realism type thing with magicians and dragons and whatnot, and a more classic fantasy setting that I've done a lot of really specific world building for. (don't get me wrong I have really specific worldbuilding for both of the settings ahaha) I'll put a bit of info about the world before the characters that go in it, but I'm gonna try to keep it brief! (I could go on for forever I heart worldbuilding)
-----
These guys are fairly new, so their worldbuilding isn't set in stone yet. That being said, there is a few types of magic: magicians---humans who have magic genetically and can perform it with a familiar or a powerful magical object, magical creatures (like dragons, elves (more like gnomes or goblins than your typical pointy fantasy elf tho), werewolves, vampires, etc.) who don't need to use something else to do magic, and normal humans with no magic in them---they are immune to magic that could turn them into something else. Most people don't know about magic, because the magicians don't want modern-day witch trials. The characters are set in Generic High School in Generic Town Or City. There is a Generic Fantasy Cult that wants to figure out how to change werewolves, vampires, and dragons into normal humans.
Korbin Knight-
Korbin was originally my protagonist, so he is the character that a lot of plot events would follow (if I had any lmao). He is pretty quiet and reserved, preferring to fly under the radar and just finish high school. In his free time he likes to go to the library, and he reads so many books it's actually crazy. I think he would like the fantasy-romance genre a lot, and he would read pretty much any fiction. I want to say he would love Twilight, but I haven't read any of the books and only watched two of the movies. He isn't ambitious and doesn't have a plan for what to do after he graduates besides getting a job and moving out of his relatives house as soon as possible (I was trying to make him very cliche so he has dead parents-being cliche is the reason for the wacky name as well). Korbin doesn't know he is a magician until he meets his familiar (a raven named peanut) and is befriended by Erin, but it is basically a dream come true for him: he gets to be like the people in the books he reads, and he gets to be friends with someone who's really awesome. He ends up with big bird wings sometime because of reasons that I don't know yet (characters with wings are so cool, also for the cliche factor ehehe).
Erin Hunter-
Erin is a changeling---she was swapped with a human baby by her original dragon parents so they could be able to turn into accurate humans for species survival reasons. Her parents figured this out when she was in early elementary school, and decided to keep her and not look for their original kid. Since she is a changeling, she has a more powerful type of magic and can turn into an awesome dragon. Erin has pretty much always been the popular girl in her class, because she is really nice to people and likes having a lot of friends. Her best friend had always been her older brother Rowan, but when he suddenly went missing one day four-ish years before the main story, she became a bit more reserved and stopped being able to really connect with her friends at school (none of them knew about her magic and therefore couldn't be told the whole story). She stayed very kind and friendly, but now with a really intense anger and hatred for the cult that she (rightfully) thinks had something to do with her brother's disappearance. She is a high school senior, and she plans on going to school for fashion design after she takes a gap year to try to find out what really happened to her brother.
Hecate Smith-
Hecate would describe herself as very determined and too smart to be "burdened" by her peers. She is an only child of parents who are both magicians and also both work in the medical field, and she has been encouraged to go to medical school and become some sort of doctor as well. Hecate really likes this idea, but she is also really interested in magic. She somehow got her hands on some VERY ILLEGAL guides for necromancy and blood magic when she was in middle school, and has been experimenting on dead animals her familiar (a snake who I have not named yet) brings to her in an old graveyard near her house. She has yet to try anything on a person (and is mostly doing this stuff in a graveyard for the vibe and to make sure her parents don't catch her), but she has had some results on small animals. Hecate overall has good intentions, only doing sketchy illegal magic with the intent to help people eventually, but her lack of meaningful social connection and stuff makes her really easy to manipulate. This becomes a plot point later in the story, specifically with the cult, but I don't really know much other than that, since these OCs are my newest ones! She eventually becomes really good friends with Viktor.
Viktor Hawthorne-
Viktor got turned into a vampire when he was around 10 or 11, and his parents---full believers in the cult (I should really name it...)---gave the ok to move him into the manor where the cult people do generic cult things. Their goal is to eventually un-vampire him (he wants this too---he hates feeling like a monster), but so far nothing is working. His familiar is a white cat, and while he cant do normal human magic (magic done with a familiar) anymore and is discouraged from using the more powerful magic he got from getting vamped. He LOVES his cat. Viktor is sick of being unsuccessfully experimented on, so he has been trying to get in contact with his older sister, who had moved states a few years previously, and run away to go live with her. The graveyard where Hecate hangs out is near the manor where he lives, so they kept running into each other and became friends. He often finds himself with a lot of free time (at least before he meets the other three characters) and so he got really into knitting. He made a sweater for himself, and likes making people things---he also makes little hats and jackets for his cat. He has crazy low self esteem, but is actually the kind of person everyone seems to like immediately.
these two are a lot less developed but i still like them:
Andre-
Andre is Erin's human counterpart. He was raised by dragons so that they would be able to accurately turn into humans. He is kind of shy and quiet, but loves his dragon community and would do a lot for them if they were threatened.
Rook Penny-
Rook is a little elf-creature that lives with others of her species in some caves in the same mountain as Andre and the dragons. Despite being like 3 or 4 feet tall, she is a big presence in a room, very bold and loud, and goes and does quest things with Andre. The two of them are like that "excuse me he wanted no pickles" meme!
-----
The next three are my oldest characters (I've been drawing them for at least 5 years, and thinking about them for longer). There are a lot less people in the world because of wizards: very rare people who learn how to use magic from the world/nature. When they die, the magic gets released back to where it came from, but that can only happen with really big global natural disasters (that end up killing a lot of people)(I'm calling them Big Catastrophes for this). People across the world aren't able to connect pretty much at all, but big boats are becoming more of a thing and people are starting to go other places and start maybe doing trade with other groups of people. magical creatures started appearing after wizards, but they don't have the same negative impacts as the wizards. These creatures range from "regular animal but with some magic or something" to "oh that's just a person with cool powers". If anything here doesn't make sense I WILL explain better, but this is basically it!
Dandelion-
Dandelion is VERY loyal to the people she cares about, and she tends to care easily. She was taken in by the few knights and guards of the castle when she was young to be trained in the king's effort to get more soldiers, but she quickly got out of it (she didn't like how structured it was and just physically left) and now just mostly does favors for a few of the townspeople, hunts for prey in the woods, and follows Lev around. She is a magical creature---a shapeshifter---and can be either a human or a mountain lion at any given time. This helps her get her way---you don't want to argue with a big cat with sharp teeth and claws. Dandelion used to live in the forest surrounding the small kingdom with her mother and three siblings, but they were attacked by a mysterious hunter one day and she doesn't know if any of her family made it out alive, and she also doesn't quite remember what happened as she was so young (but she knows that the arrow the hunter shot at her is the reason she has the scar/notch on her ear). the only reason she hasn't gone back to live in the forest or try to find out what happened to her family is Lev: they have been attached at the hip since she came to their community (he was the first one to find her) and they consider each other family. he and Pon (when they eventually meet) are the ones she would most readily go to the ends of the earth for.
Lev-
Lev is pretty bad at most physical activities and gets sick easily, but he has perfected the art of being really likeable. While Dandelion starts liking people easily, she doesn't seem too approachable and is a bit too intense and/or scary for a lot of people. Lev is really good at conversation (despite not talking much when he was younger due to not being able to hear well) and he is kind of "just a guy" and thus very approachable. He's scared of a lot of things (like horses) but is trying really hard to get over his fears. He is the son of the rulers of their small kingdom, but he isn't the first in line for the throne: that would be his older sister. Lev is happy about this, because he would much rather become some sort of adventurer than do government. He has been wanting to leave his home and learn what's out there for pretty much all of his life, and used to run away a lot. This actually led to him meeting Dandelion and them becoming friends. Lev and Dandelion do plan on venturing out into the forests when they are both old enough to not die, which is where I would start if I was writing this into a story! Them leaving doesn't end up going well: Lev gets trapped in some sort of magical underground realm that is the start of the next Big Catastrophe, and Dandelion doesn't know where he is or how to get him back. It all ends up ok though (but not after i make them suffer a bit hehe)
Pon-
Pon hasn't been around many people in their life so far. They were created by the most recent wizard out of his shadow for the purpose of fighting death when it comes for him and thus making him immortal and skipping the Big Catastrophe that would be caused by his magic re-entering the world. this did not work, but Pon was somehow left alive. They lived with the dead wizard's wife in their cabin, and she taught them about botany and medicinal plants (which started their love of tea), and helped them learn how to read. She eventually died as well, and Pon lived on their own until Dandelion stumbled across their house while looking for Lev and got them to help. Pon is not good at making conversation (they don't have much practice) but they love to learn and understand things and have knowledge that they weren't allowed to have when the wizard was alive. the thing that this doesn't fully apply to is themself. Pon doesn't actually know what they can do/what powers they have from being a magical shadow person, but they still feel immense guilt in not being good enough and "letting" the wizard and the lady die, and they feel like finding out they can do more things now would be undeserved. Pon has always been able to become intangible though which is cool. Pon eventually becomes a doctor after traveling to a (slightly) larger country with Lev and Dandelion and getting through the Big Catastrophe.
#mutual's ocs#not my ocs#pestering successful#when I don't *really* need to go to bed I may have more worldbuilding questions for you#I need to get better at doing what you did where it's like “I haven't really fleshed out this thing I just know it exists”#but I'm SCAWED sometimes#this is all so amazing!

you can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. put your favorite playlist on shuffle and list the first ten songs then tag ten people — no skipping!
tagged by @leefi !! thank u for tagging me :D
my favorite playlist is my self-curated "calming" playlist so many of these will be soothing instrumentals from video games or movies or songs with quiet vibes!
fall (the smell of the mushroom) by concernedape - from the stardew valley soundtrack, a classic ! fall is my fave season in that game
umi no mieru machi by weekly piano, maho fukami - piano cover of a song from the kiki's delivery service soundtrack :3 very nice! can't find the same artist on youtube but basically sounds like the one i'm linking
sorry bro - SALES - this song actually has vocals but it's just quiet enough to qualify for my calming playlist :3! the beats in this song are great
dearly beloved by harpsona - pleasant cover for the kingdom hearts song of the same name! this song is so romantic sounding
the ocean waves by shigeru nagata - another song from a ghibli movie, ocean waves! i didn't like the movie at all, but the soundtrack is good
ame furu yoru no mukō by lamp - live love lamp 🫶 one of my current fave artists
cave by streaming music studios - piano cover of one of my fave songs from the botw soundtrack ! so pretty i loved finding shrines in caves bc of this song! again i can't find the original artist so this is the original song from the game :]
perdido de amor by luiz bonfa - very lovely acoustic song ! feels warm and cozy like sitting by a fireplace
shrine by franco albertiini - good song from botw!! the end of it is NAWT calming bc they include guardian themes but i like it so it stays..
mae's house by alec holowka - song from one of my fave games ever, night in the woods!!! really does capture the feeling of being at home
tagging: anybody who wants to do it !! but also @mothblooms @vault22 @amanaci @lateafternoonsunlight @priorys @vqmpira @canaria @girlhusbands @cishetboy @marsdemo

For the 5+ headcanons, Id love to see a Julie centric Studio Ghibli AU if you dont mind 😊
I mean a Kiki's Delivery Service Jatp AU is kind of a perfect vibe, right?
-Julie gets her mom's old broom and nearly doesn't leave, even though she promised Rose she would before she passed. To be honest the idea of leaving for a year is very tempting, even if she has no idea what she's going to do with herself. Her magic is mostly tied to her music and she just... can't.
-It gets worse when on her first night flying away she runs into Carrie who is just coming back from her year away and the conversation does not go well.
-She manages to find a nice little room above a bakery. The lady who runs it reminds her of her Tía. She starts making deliveries, simply because flying is one of the few magics she can still manage.
-Her cat stops talking to her, flying seems to take more and more out of her.
-On the way home one day, she's flying along the shore when her broom starts to sputter. She manages to land, but it's not particularly graceful, and maybe she ends up with a face full of salt water. When she looks up, two boys are running towards her, asking her if she's okay.
-They take her back to their instruments, where a forth is waiting. He takes one look at her and sets off to where they've parked the van and comes back with a bunch of towels. He also insists on her borrowing his hoodie, because she's shivering. The ocean was still very cold.
-She tries to demure but they insist. They say they'll play one more song, and then they'll pack up and drive her home, since her... mode of transportation is faulty.
-Reggie is just obsessed with the broom and tries to make it go. She tries to explain that the magic comes from the witch and not the broom but he's so cute and funny running around with it that she doesn't have the heart.
-The band plays their song and Julie... well, Julie feels her magic spark up inside of her in a way it hasn't in almost a year.
-They drive her home, and her cat is suddenly talking again, and by the time she realises she's still wearing Alex' hoodie, they've already left.
-Maybe she finds her mom's song at the bottom of her bag, folded in one of her cozy 'I'm sad' sweaters.
-Thankfully, the nice lady has an old piano in her attic, and when Julie plays, everything comes to life.
-She spends all her hard-earned money on a keyboard from the thrift store, tries not to think about how if this doesn't work, she'll be eating cat food next week because that's all she has left in the cupboards.
-She finds the boys at the pier again soon. It's hard to fly there with a keyboard strapped to her back, but she's so brimming with magic and excitement that she manages. She gives Alex back his hoodie and asks if she can play with them, just one song.
-Ray finds the first video of Julie and The Phantoms performing live before her letter even reaches him. He's so happy and proud.
#julie and the phantoms#AUs are awesome#not!fic#I wrote a thing#do they come back possibly in a flying van while making music together because it's the magic and not the object that flies#perhaps. she just wanted to see the look on Carrie's face#also you know Reggie and Willie tried to make her make a roomba fly like a skateboard
